Three Village Dads raise $15K for Setauket VFW post

When it comes to raising money, members of one Facebook parent group have been busy this year.

Just a few months after donating $12,000 to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, the fathers who make up the Three Village Dads Facebook group presented a check Sept. 16 for $15,000 to Veterans of Foreign War Post 3054 in East Setauket. The group raised the funds during an Aug. 23 golf outing at Rock Hill Golf and Country Club in Manorville where 95 people participated. Among the golfers were six post members who were invited to join the online group and play some golf as well.

Group administrator David Tracy, of Stony Brook, said the VFW post came in a close second to the children’s hospital earlier this year when administrators asked members what nonprofit they should raise money for. Tracy said the fathers were able to collect $15,000 for the post by charging for golf and offering raffles including a 50/50. They also approached businesses to ask if they would like to sponsor golf tee signs and meals on the day of the event.

“Because we had such a great turnout and

a good reputation from back in May with the children’s hospital, we essentially had the same returning businesses and then a few extras,” Tracy said.

Post Commander Jay Veronko said the $15,000 came at a good time. The post recently installed a fire alarm system which cost $14,000.

The members have been busy renovating the building, and after Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) reached out to local unions, sheet metal workers reworked the kitchen’s vent system as a project for their trainees. In addition to the kitchen renovations, the back steps were recently redone. Masonry union members, who have donated their time and tiles, will work on the bathrooms. The post members also are hoping to replace their windows, which aren’t energy efficient.

Veronko said by renovating the post, the hope is that it can be used as a community meeting center. Three Village Dads has planned to gather there once a month, and the Titanium Twirlers — a group of baton twirlers — just held their initial meeting at the post.

“It’s part of the mission of trying to get back out in the community,” Veronko said.

Tracy said the post is the perfect place to meet.

In addition to discussing future fundraising projects, he said the group hopes to talk about local issues and how they can add their voices to concerns in the community. Stony Brook residents voice their concerns on town issues

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Residents, community groups and elected officials gathered at William Sidney Mount Elementary School auditorium Sept. 16 to discuss pertinent issues in the Town of Brookhaven at an event hosted by the Stony Brook Concerned Homeowners Ltd and Friends of Stony Brook Road.

Topics discussed at the meeting were the progress on Stony Brook Road, the latest on the Gyrodyne Property and student rentals.

The latest on Stony Brook Road

Lee Krauer, president of the Friends of Stony Brook Road, said the group is frustrated with Town of Brookhaven highway superintendent, Dan Losquadro (R), and the work being done on the road.

“We have requested so many meetings with him [Losquadro] to discuss the issues that we need to discuss,” she said. “He came to the meeting last year and told everyone there that we would have sand and concrete on the medians. Does anybody see it?”

Krauer said according to Losquadro the reason behind not having the concrete medians is because the Highway Department doesn’t

have enough money in the budget for them.

She also expressed frustration with Stony Brook University.

“The university involvement is nil, they don’t care about Stony Brook Road,” Krauer said.

Currently, Stony Brook Road is undergoing a $1.9 million makeover that will see repairs and work done on sidewalks, drainage systems, turning lanes and traffic signals among others. Work is scheduled to be completed by the middle of October.

The Gyrodyne property situation

The fate of the Gyrodyne property has been a concern for many residents, since the developers announced plans in 2017 to subdivide the 62 acres of land in St. James, also known as Flowerfields, to construct a 150-room hotel with a restaurant and day spa, two medical office buildings and a 220-unit assisted living complex with its own sewage treatment facility.

Many in the area have raised concerns about the amount of traffic that would empty out onto Route 25A and Stony Brook Road if an additional exit was made accessible on the east side.

Cindy Smith, of the Greater Stony Brook Action Coalition, spoke on the status of the Gyrodyne development.

“There will be tremendous traffic on 25A and development has the potential to dump traffic on Stony Brook Road,” she said.

Smith said despite the parcel being on Town of Smithtown property the traffic burden will be felt by Brookhaven residents.

Smithtown “would reap the tax property revenue while Brookhaven foots the bill, and we have to deal with the quality of issues like traffic, noise, dust and safety issues,” she said.

Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said he opposes additional development on that parcel.

“We are doing all we can to see if the county would be willing to purchase some of that land,” he said. “This could have a tremendous impact on the community, I am opposed to opening up the roads between Gyrodyne and the university.”

Romaine said it would have dire consequences on Stony Brook Road.

“I am prepared to seek legal action as town supervisor to prevent roads from being opened,” he said.

Student boarding houses/rentals

Off-campus student boarding houses have been an issue for Three Village

residents, though in recent years with help from the town and SBU the amount of these houses that pop up in the community has been curbed.

Bruce Sander, of Stony Brook Concerned Citizens, said the organization is glad at seeing this success but reiterated more can be done.

He said some of the blame still falls on the university for not adequately providing enough student housing on campus, especially for first-year students.

Sander also mentioned that international students and others don’t want to pay for the school’s meal plan, which is considered too expensive, and have found a way around living on campus.

The university needs to increase housing on campus, he said.

An idea previously brought by Romaine would have SBU require all non-commuter students who are freshmen to be mandated to live on campus.

Three Village board, students discuss ‘it’s about time’

Activism is strong in Three Village.

At the Sept. 18 Three Village school board meeting, parents, students and alumni came out in support of an issue that has concerned many members of the community: school start times.

Earlier in the month, the board heard from parents in favor of later start times for the district’s three secondary schools. Last week, the board heard from Ward Melville graduates and students, themselves.

“Sleep deprivation does not have to be a part of Ward Melville culture,” said Sophia Zhukovsky, a sophomore at Stony Brook University and a Ward Melville graduate.

“Ward Melville has a great deal of highachieving, dedicated and bright students, but it also has a great deal of exhausted students,” she said. “It’s very strenuous to strive for academic and personal success on half the medically recommended sleep time for people my age.”

Student and parent speakers echoed Zhukovsky’s sentiments. They described mornings as a “time of family anxiety and stress” and shared personal stories about the impact of sleep deprivation on family time and emotional health.

“Even 30 minutes would do a lot for students at the school in terms of both mental health and for fostering community,” wrote Kirti Nath, 2017 Ward Melville valedictorian. Nath — Sophia couldn’t attend the meeting, but her letter was read to the board by high school student Natalia Newton.

“Ward Melville is undeniably one of the best public high schools that I know of, and I am incredibly grateful to have gotten my start there,” said Nath, a University of Pennsylvania sophomore. “I write this because I think that the Ward Melville experience can be even better.”

Annemarie Waugh, a local artist, P.J. Gelinas parent and founder of Sidewalks For Safety, said allowing students more time to sleep would “level the playing field” both athletically and academically. She added yet another concern.

“The system now encourages inexperienced teenage drivers to be driving in the dark at the same time other students are waiting on busy roads with no sidewalks in the dark,”

she said. “This arrangement doubles the risk of tragedy.”

In addition to drawing even more supporters than the previous board meeting, the It’s About Time: Three Village Parents For A Later School Start Time movement gathered more than 1,400 signatures in a little more than a week.

But breaking through the chorus of support for a later secondary start time was Vincent Sperandeo, a parent of Ward Melville graduates. “Changing us would also mean that other districts would have to change as well,” he said.

He pointed out that Ward Melville was within the range of start times for surrounding school districts and changing Three Village’s junior high and high school start times would have to be done “in coordination with other districts.”

While Ward Melville starts at 7:05 am, nearby districts range in start time from the 7:02 a.m. warning bell at Miller Place High School to 7:10 a.m. at Comsewogue High School, 7:20 a.m. in Smithtown and 7:30 a.m. in Commack, Port Jefferson and Mount Sinai.

“The real world out there is not starting at 9 o’clock,” Sperandeo said. “The real world out there is starting when your job is telling you to start.”

Although districts in the immediate area have start times well before 8 a.m., schools across the nation have been taking a serious look at delaying start times.

Ever since the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended in Zhukovsky 2014 that secondary schools start no earlier than 8:30 a.m., attention to the issue has grown. The State of California has even gone so far as to propose a bill pushing back start times for all of its secondary schools.

According to research, biological changes in the adolescent circadian rhythms make it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11 p.m.

Waking up to catch an early bus interrupts the later part of their sleep cycle, preventing them from getting the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep their developing bodies and brains need.

Researchers at Seattle’s University of Washington and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, found that students at two Seattle high schools that changed to later start times got more sleep during the week, had fewer tardies and absences in their first period classes and had

improved academic performance.

Despite the abundance of information favoring later start times, most U.S. high schools start before 8:30 a.m., and some schools that considered change decided against it because of logistics.

That’s why Barbara Rosati, founder of It’s About Time, has suggested that Three Village officials attend the Adolescent Health and School Start Times Workshop, in Pennsylvania, which would cover the “science, strategies, logistics and tips” for making a shift.

The Nov. 13 workshop is already full. However, the website indicated that the organizer — the national group, Start School Later — was — Vincent considering a second session.

Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich, who described the research on later start times as “cogent, valid and reliable,” said last week that the district would begin phase 1 of its investigation into the shift. This would mean “data gathering” so that there could be “meaningful conversation,” she said.

This process, the superintendent said, would include surveys of parents, staff and students, as well as conversations with districts that have made the time change and those that considered it, but decided against it. Pedisich estimated that if the board moved forward with a committee, it would take shape in January.

“The last thing in the world we want to do is give the impression that we’re not listening,” said board president William Connors during a telephone interview. “Fourteen hundred signatures is compelling and shows we have to listen and do our due diligence.”

But there are also a lot of factors to consider, he added, Sperandeo such as the “domino” effect on other grades and the fact that a shift could cost the district “literally millions of dollars” in additional transportation costs.

“I don’t like the idea of kids getting up at 5 in the morning, but we have to look at the alternatives and establish our priorities,” Connors said.

Port Jefferson bar cited for selling alcohol to minors A Port Jefferson bar has come under heavy scrutiny over allegedly providing alcohol to children underage.

Suffolk County Police said they have investigated Portside Bar & Grill, located at 252 East Main St., in response to community complaints. Working with the New York State Liquor Authority, the investigation led to the arrest of Christopher Chernis, 34, of Holbrook on Saturday, Sept. 21. He was charged with

unlawfully dealing with a child in the first degree and was issued a field appearance ticket.

Police said they do not release information on the nature of community complaints made to SCPD. The owners of the bar were also cited for numerous Alcohol and Beverage Control law violations by the State Liquor Authority, according to police.

Miller Place man killed in vehicle collision Suffolk County Police said they are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a Miller Place man in Middle Island the morning of Saturday, Sept. 21.

Police said Keisha Dalton, of Middle Island, was driving a 2011 Buick Regal northbound on Miller Place-Yaphank Road when her vehicle struck a pedestrian who was walking in the road at around 5:50 a.m.

The victim, Timothy Petrulo, 35, of Miller Place, was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson where he was pronounced dead. Dalton, 45, was not injured.

The Buick was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the 6th Squad at 631-854-8652.

Patriots fall at home against Floyd

BY BILL LANDON DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Looking to parlay their season opening win, Ward Melville was overwhelmed by visiting William Floyd when the Colonials crushed the Patriots, 45-6, Sept. 20.

Senior running back Michael Fiore provided the only spark for the Patriots when he covered 76 yards on a kickoff return for a touchdown late in the opening quarter.

After their season opening 35-14 blasting

of Brentwood, the Patriots look to get back to their winning ways when they hit the road against the Bay Shore Marauder’s Sept. 28.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) stopped by the Town of Brookhaven Fire Police Association monthly meeting Sept.

16, which was held in Setauket. The TBFPA consists of approximately 35 departments

in the town as well as several others on the borders. Bellone appeared near the end of the formal meeting to thank the members for their actions as first responders in everyday situations.

Aug. 19 at the Charles B. Wang Center were representatives from the area’s civic associations, chambers of commerce, public libraries, fire departments and education and historical organizations. The breakfast was hosted by Judith Greiman, chief deputy to the president and senior vice president for government and community relations.

School News P.J. Gelinas Junior High School

Setauket Jefferson’s Ferry, a not-for-profit life plan community in South Setauket, has elected Vivian Viloria-Fisher of Setauket to chair its board of directors. She previously was vice chairwoman of the board. George Rice, who has served as the board chair since 1997, has stepped down from the post but will continue as a trustee of the board.

Viloria-Fisher, a former three-term Suffolk County legislator of the fifth electoral district who was also deputy presiding officer, joined the Jefferson’s Ferry board of directors in 2012 after she left public service. She was named vice chairwoman in February 2014 and was recognized as Trustee of the Year by LeadingAge New York in 2017.

“The Jefferson’s Ferry community is exceedingly fortunate to have Vivian as the chair of our board,” said Robert Caulfield, president and chief executive officer of Jefferson’s Ferry.

“Her keen understanding of the challenges we face, from regulatory issues to the decisions that enable us to provide the highest quality of life to our residents, makes her a valuable member of our board and our community. The entire board of directors, as well as our residents, management and staff, respects Vivian tremendously as an active, engaged member of the Jefferson’s Ferry community.”

Throughout her government service and as a trustee, Viloria-Fisher has been a tireless advocate for senior services in general. Her ability to identify and connect with the right government officials has done much to forward the Jefferson’s Ferry agenda. While in the

Stony Brook University Interim President Michael Alan Bernstein invited a group of local community leaders to campus recently for a meet and greet. The informal event provided an opportunity for him to chat with each guest and learn more about the relationship between the campus and the community.

Legislature, Viloria-Fisher’s advocacy for seniors included transportation, health and nutrition. She secured funds and grants for individuals, home heating assurance programs and senior centers. As a Jefferson’s Ferry trustee, she travels to Washington, D.C., annually to address Capitol Hill on issues important to Jefferson’s Ferry. She attends LeadingAge’s New York and national conferences to keep the board well informed on pertinent issues.

When students enter the classroom of P.J. Gelinas Junior High School art teacher Michael Sacco, they are quickly captivated by a sense of creativity, imagination and artistic inspiration — factors that contributed to Sacco being featured in SchoolArts Magazine for the 12th time in his career.

The article, penned by Sacco, details one of the lessons he uses in the ninth-grade media arts class at Gelinas. The featured project focuses on a style of photography created by a street artist in Germany that incorporates triptychs in photos. In addition to the overview of the lesson,

the article also features the work of several of Sacco’s former students. These include Melaina Gargano (current sophomore), Scarlett Jackett (current junior), Ryan Nagle (current junior) and Emma Robinson (current junior). All were in ninth grade when the artwork was created and currently attend Ward Melville High School.

The article on Sacco was included in the publication’s September issue and will be reprinted as part of a special SchoolArts collection text highlighting STEAM lessons, which is expected to be unveiled in March during the NAEA Convention in Minneapolis.

SBU opens campus up to neighbors

On Sept. 21, visitors were welcomed to explore the Stony Brook University campus.

The third annual event dubbed CommUniversity Day provided local residents the opportunity to meet SBU students, faculty, staff and leadership.

The day included family fun activities such as building a foam rocket, testing balance and heart health and food tastings.

Members of the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams demonstrated their skills, and attendees tried tai chi on the lawn and enjoyed a rubber duck race at the end of the day. Dancers and the The Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band were also on hand to entertain.

TBR readers enjoy some book talk and food

TBR News Media hosted its 2nd annual Cooks, Books & Corks event at the venue, with 100 ticket holders in attendance to chat with 17 authors and to sample entrées, desserts and beverages from 18 establishments. Cellist Alison Rowe was on hand to provide the background music.

The event was organized to raise funds for a paid intern for TBR’s six newspapers next summer. The intern will be selected from students attending Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism. Ticket holders had the opportunity to stroll through the Bates House to sample food and chat with authors, as well as buy books. A few of the attending writers even took to the stage to describe their works to the audience.

During the event, publisher Leah Dunaief thanked the crowd for attending, and she said after last year’s Cooks, Books & Corks she received many compliments, including that it was a highly dignified event, and she hoped those in attendance found this one just as grand and exciting.

Journalism and executive director of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, attended the event.

“What an important time to be involved in journalism,” she said, addressing the attendees.

Lindenfeld said the opportunity to work with SBU journalism students was amazing, and she said they tell “important stories grounded in truth.”

As the author of “Feasting Our Eyes: Food Films and Cultural Identity in the United States,” the interim dean said she couldn’t turn down the opportunity to attend Cooks, Books & Corks. She said those involved were building community, a word she said ties into communication.

“I love the idea that the word communication comes from the word community,” she said. “It’s about a sense of belonging, being together and making meaning together.

And I can see that happening in this room here.”

Lindenfeld thanked the attendees for supporting the fundraiser for an intern to have the opportunity to get experience in the field.

“We just want to get them out in the world, telling good stories that make a difference and then help us really be open to change,” she said.

Paying attention to The mystery of Donald Trump’s loyal base local elections Long Island residents bear a tremendous tax burden. So, when the editorial staff at TBR News Media report low voter turnouts for local elections, we are constantly puzzled. Why are people not voting?

A recent example is the Sept. 10 special election in the Setauket Fire District where commissioners were looking for the go-ahead to buy four new pumper trucks. While the vote wasn’t one that would immediately result in higher taxes like a bond vote, the district was still looking for the community’s approval to spend approximately $2.5 million. The vote was a meager 8565 for the new trucks. With over 11,000 voting age residents in the fire district, where was everybody that Tuesday?

In comparison, on Sept. 18, Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in Setauket saw 416 residents approve its budget and 61 voting “no.” While not a huge turnout, more people showed up to cast their votes.

Looking at board of education votes in North Shore communities, the turnouts seem only marginally higher.

Considering school budgets can be a big hit to taxes, why do so many people miss out on casting their votes?

In 2019, for example, the Miller Place School District proposed a $74 million budget, an $1.2 million increase from the previous year. Only 783 residents turned out to vote. The hamlet may be small compared to other districts in our area, but according to the 2010 census, more than 12,000 people live there. Again, where was everyone?

When it comes to elections, whether for a fire or school district or library, entities are required by law to post legal notices in their local newspapers, which they do. And while they are not legally obligated to, many send out letters and include information in their newsletters and on their websites, and spread the word through social media. Plus, many school districts and libraries hold events to go over budgets with the community, though the meetings tend to be not well-attended by residents.

The current system and practices seem inadequate.

It may be time for elected officials to look into the possibility of combining all such votes on one day, either in November or on primary day. If that’s not possible, due to fire district boundaries being different to those of school districts, then maybe legislators can set up funds to help fire districts, schools and libraries cover costs to better advertise elections. With the most recent Setauket Fire District vote, no letters were sent out, due to cost.

Under the current arrangement, entities have more incentive not to promote elections, since low voter turnout often means a proposal is more likely to be approved by the few people in the know.

Perhaps it’s time to institute a requirement: A certain percentage of residents must vote before a referendum can become official.

But the onus must also fall on the electorate as well as the government entities organizing an election.

So, in the meantime: Vote! It’s the only way to be sure your voice is heard.

The 2016 election of Donald Trump resulted, in large part, from working class, non-college-educated white voters deserting a Democratic Party (and the establishment GOP) perceived as economically and culturally out of touch and embracing Trump’s populist, anti-establishment, nationalist rhetoric and promises. Resenting cultural and racial displacement, illegal immigration and economic regression, these “forgotten Americans” saw, in Donald Trump, the savior who would “make America great again.”

The dangerously polarized body politic is ill served by the mutual demonization of our current political discourse. Thus, I shall neither impugn nor denigrate the beliefs or values of those who, in good faith, embraced the vision of candidate Trump.

What is inexplicable, however, is the inability of these very supporters to recognize the failure of President Trump’s vision and campaign promises? Building an 1,800-mile

wall paid for by Mexico produces 40 miles of wall paid for by the American taxpayer.

Promising to balance the budget within eight years morphs into a projected $9.1 trillion deficit in that period. Repeal and replace Obamacare fails with 7 million Americans losing their health insurance under Trump.

A pledge to cut taxes of the middle class fills the coffers of the rich (with the top 1 percent receiving 83 percent of the benefits) while, by 2027, the bottom 60 percent of Americans will pay more.

“Drain the swamp” translates into Trump’s national security adviser, campaign manager and private attorney in prison; our regulatory agencies staffed by the former executives and lobbyists drawn from the industries they are now regulating; hush money paid to a porn star; financially profiting from the presidency; and seeking Russian and Ukrainian assistance in two campaigns. Pledges to project American strength abroad is reduced to alienating

allies, coddling despots and failing to contain North Korea, Iran, Russia and the Taliban while waging a trade war with China that threatens recession. And finally despite promising to “always tell you the truth,” more than 12,000 lies have been reported in his 950 days in office.

One would hope that at some point, Trump supporters would become overwhelmed by his failures and broken promises and reject him. That they do not may be explained by recognizing that Trump’s actual promises and policies were never the key to their support. Rather, they loyally follow him not because of who he is or what he does but because of what they think he believes — and how that empowers them and makes their voice relevant once more. They incorrectly believe that conceding Trump’s failures would delegitimize their core values and beliefs.

Pay attention to 347 and Nicolls Road

In regard to Rita J. Egan’s article in the Sept. 12 The Village Times Herald on the Stony Brook Road makeover, I would like to state that this project has been a long time coming. I originally brought up the problems to former county Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher. Then to past Town of Brookhaven Councilman Steve FioreRosenfeld. Then to Councilwoman Valerie Cartright.

The plaudits given to Sen. John Flanagan and Assemblyman Steve Englebright are fine, but where is the help to get the Route 347/Nicolls Road intersection fixed?

It is possibly the worst and most overcrowded intersection on Long Island, and the one that should have been done first on the Hauppauge to Port Jefferson makeover. That project started at the west end and has come to an apparent dead end. So the Route 347/Nicolls Road intersection just sits.

Kara Hahn represents [the 5th District of] Suffolk County and could get involved as Nicolls Road is under county jurisdiction.

The guide rail on Nicolls Road is a disgrace.

Two or three years ago she told me personally that the money was in that year’s budget. Look at the guide rail as you drive

by. Do you think it looks very protective?

Please stop heaping praise on your local and state politicians when their help for the bigger projects is not forthcoming. Stop the excuses and work on the major issues.

I was also told a few years ago not to worry about a traffic light being put up at the Stony Brook University Research and Development Park entrance/exit. You now have that signal, which is on a grade by the way, which is not going to be much fun when you may have to start or stop during inclement weather on an up or downgrade.

My experience with India pale ale After reading Bob Lipinski’s “The resurgence of India pale ale” in the Sept.

19 TBR News Media’s Arts & Lifestyles section, I felt compelled to comment.

First off, I loved the article yet feel I must add my own experience to it.

In the fall of 1974, I returned from San Diego while finishing Coast Guard training for anti-submarine warfare. While out West, I was least of all impressed with Coors, Olympia and some of the other local brews and gravitated toward the ales

(which were few and far between).

Well, one afternoon, I was in Stony Brook Beverage looking for my usual, Ballantine XXX ale, when the clerk recommended I try a recent addition to their stock called Ballantine India Pale Ale. It was 99 cents for a six pack. He said that if I enjoyed the XXX, I would certainly enjoy this.

Well, after the first swallow, I was hooked. I drank this IPA as it was the only one available and there was no

competition at the time.

Then as suddenly as it appeared, it vanished, and I was in mourning for over 20 years. The rest is history but I must say that I remember Ballantine as the pioneer of IPAs. Now I am paralyzed by choice.

I now frequent the Country Corner in Setauket which has always at least five craft IPAs on tap and changes brands almost daily (as well as their lines regularly).

Practicing what we preach, one bottle at a time

vidence of my own failure sits in plain sight on my desk. I believe in recycling, in saving the planet, in doing what’s right for me, my children and for future generations.

I readily agree that using onetime plastic pollutes the world and kills marine creatures.

And yet, here, sitting on my desk, are two plastic water bottles from onetime-use plastics.

Why can’t I walk the walk if I talk the talk? It’s not enough to believe in something or to nod in agreement as

I read articles about conserving ecosystems, protecting biodiversity and reducing our — no, my — carbon footprint. I could and should do something about it. For example, I should use, clean and reuse the same cup, cutting back on waste.

I speak with people regularly about conservation when I write the Power of Three column for TBR News Media. Often, I ask in the context of their findings about climate change, the atmosphere or biodiversity, what kind of car they drive or how they live their lives. Interviewees sometimes chuckle anxiously, share their concerns about flying to research meetings, and sigh that they should do more. Well, maybe the better way to describe it is they should live differently.

We all think good thoughts, but those thoughts alone don’t change the world. The environment isn’t self-cleaning, the planet has limited space and finite resources, and we should look closely in the mirror at our own decisions and actions.

I read about 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who came to the United Nations and delivered an impassioned speech, challenging leaders to do more and to protect the world for her generation. The teen’s words spoke volumes, as she demanded accountability and passed judgment, from the younger generation on up, for the failings of all of us who haven’t heeded the warnings.

Despite her young age, she has walked the walk. She traveled by boat to the United Nations in New York aboard a zero-emission yacht because she refuses to use a mode of transportation — flying — that emits carbon dioxide. She also went to Davos, Switzerland, for 32 hours aboard a train, again limiting her contribution to fossil fuel emissions. Each of those options might not be practical for many people, but they show her commitment and passion.

We live with a predicament: We see and acknowledge what we believe are our principles, and then we take actions that at times conflict with those beliefs.

That extends beyond the world of climate change and conservation. We often have a chance to see the disconnect between what we say and what we do when our children — or someone else’s children — point them out to us. We don’t want our children texting while they’re driving and yet they sit next to us or in the backseat and see us connecting through our phones with work colleagues or with people waiting to meet us for dinner.

It is also why any kind of poll isn’t completely accurate. We might say one thing, but do the opposite for a host of reasons, including not wanting to tell a cheerful stranger on the other end of the phone what we intend to do.

We recognize the importance of supporting ideas. The challenge, however, comes when we have the chance to choose between the easier option — a plastic bottle of cold water — or the one that supports our beliefs.

When we see our failures of principle, the question is: What are we going to do about it?

‘Over 50 and basically dead’ is an example of bigotry

And just like other bigotries beget those who are fighting to correct such attitudes, there is an effort underway to counteract ageism. One arena being targeted in that regard is the advertising world, as at the Advertising Week conference which is being held in New York this week.

Now, remember, older people hold the bulk of the wealth in this and every other country and make up a growing segment of the global population.

According to The New York Times, in an article by Tiffany Hsu Sept. 23, more than a third of the American Between population is over you and me 50, yet that segment is portrayed “in

of media images, according to research from AARP, the powerful advocacy organization” for older Americans.

We all know that marketing and advertising are powerful influencers in our lives. Martha Boudreau, AARP chief communications and marketing officer, is quoted as saying that “many advertising agencies had never dealt with marketing campaigns targeting older consumers.

Recent ads have described being 50 years old as being ‘basically dead’ and characterized older people as selfish and out of touch.”

In fact, it is the older generation that is helping their younger family members to attend college and get a start in their careers to an unprecedented degree because the older generation is richer today than at any other time in history.

So why would that attitude persist? Here’s a likely explanation. There is rampant ageism in the offices of advertising agencies. Again, according to The Times, at advertising, public relations and related companies in the United States, “more than 81 percent of employees are younger than 55. And just for an interesting comparison, in Britain, the average age of advertising employees

is “not quite 34.” In trade publications for the advertising agencies, employees have described the industry as a “Peter Pan,” Few last long enough for a retirement party and there have been lawsuits charging age discrimination.

Yes, someday those same employees will be 50 years and older, and their perspectives will change, but we are dealing with the here and now.

Here are some more details from a report involving 1,116 images reviewed by AARP. More than 53 million people older than 50 are employed in the United States, but only 13 percent of the images showed older people working. Those photographed were pictured mainly at home, with a partner or a medical professional.

The numbers get worse. Not even 5 percent of the images showed older folks handling technology, although the Pew Research Center found that 69 percent of people in the age group of 55-73, according to The Times, owned a smartphone. But more than a third of the images showed younger people with technology.

AARP’s Boudreau commented for The Times, “Marketers reflect the culture and the conversation in our country. Stereotypes about

the 55-plus demographic were really limiting people’s sense of what they could do with this half of their lives.” The group collected 1,400 images for conference attendees showing older people running businesses, playing basketball and hanging out with younger generations.

“McCann, which runs a network of advertising agencies, suggested in a report last year that marketing campaigns consider perspectives of aging as ‘a journey of limitless opportunities and personal growth’ rather than ‘as a time of anxiety and uncertainty,’ according to The Times.

There has been some progress in changing perceptions. A decade ago the best-selling image from Getty, the stock media supplier of images, was of an older couple in sweaters embracing on a beach.
