State to fund Setauket Harbor improvements

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com Advocates for the health of the Setauket Harbor were given an essential resource to aid in efforts to improve water quality in the North Shore port this week.

State Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) announced he secured a $1 million grant from New York State for Brookhaven Town at a press conference Sept. 20 to be used to improve water quality in the harbor.

The announcement came on the heels of a recent water quality study of Setauket Harbor done by Cornell Cooperative Extension and commissioned by Brookhaven, which turned up troubling results. Setauket Harbor is part of the larger Port Jefferson Harbor complex.

“The recent water quality report commissioned by Brookhaven pointed out that Setauket Harbor has significant water quality issues caused mainly by road runoff from rain water flooding into the harbor after storms,” Laurie Vetere, chairwoman for Setauket Harbor Task Force, a volunteer group, said during the press conference.

The grant will fund three projects relating to the harbor.

Half of the $1 million will go toward improvements to the dock. Forty percent will be used on storm water infrastructure improvements and the remaining $100,000 will be used to remove silt that has accumulated in the harbor and its water sources.

Nitrogen pollution and coliform bacteria have plagued Setauket Harbor in recent years.

“I don’t think we were surprised — the harbor has been struggling for years,” George Hoffman of the Setauket Harbor Task Force said in an email. “It has been closed to shell fishing for more than a decade and the main creek leading to the harbor is filled with sediment and not stopping contaminants in storm water from flowing into the harbor … it’s clear that the harbor has some serious challenges.”

Restrictions were placed on shell fishing in other Long Island waterways by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in 2015 because of water quality concerns.

Flanagan said the grant should be a step in the right direction to improve the harbor’s waters.

“Long Islanders are blessed with access to magnificent waterways like Setauket Harbor,” he said during the press conference. “That’s why it is important that all

levels of government work together to preserve and protect these fragile ecosystems.

This state funding will help support critical improvement projects to restore and revitalize this beautiful natural resource and it is my pleasure to partner with [Brookhaven Town Supervisor] Ed Romaine, the Town of Brookhaven and Setauket Harbor Task Force to help bring this project to reality.”

Flanagan, who is up for reelection in November, said in an interview following the press conference that environmental issues are an “A-1 priority” to his constituents.

“They deeply care about the environment,” he said. “I have a lot of coastal property in the district I’m fortunate enough to represent … it’s all important stuff.”

Romaine (R) has been an advocate for legislation to improve Long Island’s water quality for decades. In June, the town approved a law proposed by Romaine that prohibits structures being built within 500 feet of any Long Island waters from having cesspools or septic systems.

“I thank Sen. Flanagan for his strong advocacy on behalf of the Town to help us get started on improving the water quality in Setauket Harbor and the watershed that surrounds it,” Romaine said.

“By acting now, I believe we can prevent further contamination, reverse the damage that has already been done and begin to restore this beautiful natural resource back to a healthy and environmentally sound waterway.”

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization will honor New York State Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City) at a reception Sept.

29 to launch “Young at Heart,” a unique program to serve Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and their caregivers.

This program is a collaborative effort between The WMHO, Stony Brook Medicine, the Long Island State Veterans Home and The Jazz Loft. It is set to begin this fall.

Included will be the benefits of art therapy, live music and movement. A facilitator who specializes in geriatrics will lead the sessions and a certified nurse will be present.

Hannon is regarded nationally as an expert in the health care industry. He spearheaded both the reauthorization of the Health Care Reform Act and the development of New York’s Assisted Living program.

He also helped the state enact several health programs including the Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage program, early intervention efforts, and insurance coverage for autism, prostate and breast cancer screenings.

The reception will be held at The WMHO Educational & Cultural Center at 6:30 p.m.

Three Village 50th anniversary year features safety, green initiatives

By AndreA PAldy As Three Village Central School District celebrates its golden jubilee this year, it is expanding academic offerings, upgrading safety and security protocols, and implementing green initiatives.

In her welcome letter to district families, Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich highlighted the addition of a new computer science class at the two junior high schools, new business electives at the high school and the expansion of American Sign Language classes and writing centers at the three secondary schools. Math academic intervention services have also been expanded at the elementary level, she wrote.

In an effort to be more green and health conscious, the district has replaced water fountains in all of its buildings with filtered water bottle-filling stations. This has come after voluntary lead testing over the summer found 25 water outlets throughout the district had lead levels above Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.

Earlier this month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed a bill requiring public schools to test for lead in

drinking water by Oct. 31.

The Three Village test results were in line with what other Long Island districts were finding, Jeffrey Carlson, superintendent for business services, said. All affected faucets were turned off and all water fountains at all schools were replaced with the water bottle-filling stations. It is a “better way to go,” Carlson said.

The installation of two water stations at Ward Melville High School a few years ago saved more than 50,000 plastic bottles in less than a year, principal Alan Baum said. The district recently distributed reusable 50th anniversary water bottles to all Three Village staff and students.

Carlson said the total cost for the water bottles, water stations, testing and remediation was about $150,000. He said the district got $115,000 in New York State Bullet Aid through Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) and chose to use those funds for the water bottles and water bottle-filling stations. The district can also expect some, if not all, of its remediation efforts to be eligible for additional building aid from the state, Carlson said. He added that the state

will reimburse the eligible costs at a rate of 66 percent, which means that if the entire project qualifies for reimbursement, the district could get back around $100,000 of what it spent.

At the first school board meeting since school started, Three Village’s security and safety coordinator Jack Blaum gave an update on security. He outlined procedures in the district’s Proactive Response Actions for faculty and staff in an emergency. All personnel have been trained in the response protocols, which are available to them through a mobile app called CrisisManager, he said.

Blaum added that additional safety measures now include directing all Ward Melville visitors to enter through a vestibule at the main office entrance. Security areas at the junior high schools have been reconfigured to give security officers an optimal “tactical advantage.”

The district has added Wi-Fi cameras to Ward Melville’s athletic field and plans to purchase about 50 more for the high school, 30 more for each junior high school and about 25 additional ones for each elementary school,

Blaum encouraged what he calls “two-way communication” between his team and the community. “It is the only way to find out how we’re doing and what we can do better,” he said.

SBU professor receives grant for an innovative study on autism spectrum disorder

BY REBECCA ANZEL A young scientist at Stony Brook University has received a $2.3 million grant to fund research he hopes will eventually lead to new therapies for the treatment of autism spectrum disorder.

Matthew Lerner, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of clinical psychology at Stony Brook University, and director of the Stony Brook Social Competence and Treatment Lab, the focus of which is learning to understand how children and teens with ASD form friendships.

“We use the word lab loosely, only because we collect data there,” he said. “It’s a fun space with games and activities for kids.”

His work thus far has ranged from lab-based studies — evaluating and developing tools to measure what is happening during social interactions and how the brain processes those interactions — to real-world applications. Lerner’s previous studies ask how, when and if kids make friends, and what helps them do so.

Efforts to link these two levels of analysis have never been done simultaneously — until now. Lerner won a highly competitive National Institute of Mental Health award to fund his innovative approach to studying social behaviors of children with ASD. “It’s kind of remarkable that it really hasn’t been done in quite this way before,” he said. “We presume that these things — labbased measures of how kids think about social interactions and real

world interactions themselves — are linked, because otherwise, why would we look at them? But how they’re linked, and importantly, how we can understand how those links differ across individuals, hasn’t really been done thoroughly before.”

Priscilla Arena, the leader of a support group for parents of children with ASD, said Lerner is excited about the potential the grant gives his research.

“Matthew Lerner is sort of a pioneer in his thought process, and that’s what makes him special to me,” she said. “He sees potential in the future.”

The Suffolk Aspergers/Autism Support and Information co-founder wanted to protect the parents, who have “already been beaten and kicked” by others looking for monetary donations and permission to study their children. But when she met Lerner, she said she knew almost im-

mediately that he was different.

“He’s sincere, honorable, impassioned, smart and cerebral,” Arena said. “I don’t think my first impression of him has ever changed, and I think that’s why, from the get-go, I’ve had respect for him.”

The award, called Biobehavioral Research Awards for Innovative New Scientists, was created in 2009 as a way to provide younger scientists with financial support for research. It is for early-stage investigators who are on a tenure track and have no prior research project grants.

“BRAINS” is earmarked for “the most promising early investigators” and is “one of the most competitive [awards]” NIH offers, according to Lisa Gilotty, Ph.D., program officer of Lerner’s grant.

Gilotty is also the chief of NIMH’s research program on autism spectrum disorder.

Lerner is examining how well various biological and social factors, both independently and jointly, can predict how teenagers aged 11 to 17, with and without ASD, socially interact outside of a laboratory. In the five-year project, he and his team are also studying how those factors correlate, and which best explain the resulting social behaviors.

They are hoping to use information gleaned by observing the teenagers inside and outside the lab to make precise predictions about how they make friendships.

Depending on the results, the team might be able to develop generalized patterns that can be applied to a large number of peo-

ple on the spectrum and be used to create more targeted therapies.

“This is an extremely important study that will shed light on the wide variability observed in social function in ASD,” said James McPartland, director of the Yale Developmental Disabilities Clinic. “Presently, little is understood about the biological reasons for these individual differences.

Dr. Lerner’s study will help us understand these differences from both behavioral and brain-based perspectives.”

Dozens of the 260 teenagers — 160 with ASD and 100 without — participating in this study are Three Village students. Lerner and his team have also connected with special educators in the area to see how participants are doing outside the lab in a classroom.

He and his team spend a lot of time in the community, at family events and meetings with parents and educators to introduce themselves, share information about their work and to learn what challenges children are experiencing.

Because Lerner wants the work he does to matter to parents and community members, he calls them “stakeholders” in his research.

“The most impressive thing about him is how communityminded he is,” President and Executive Director of Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association (AHA) Patricia Schissel said. “It is important that he’s not stuck in a lab. He’s excited to get out into the research community.”

Arena said quite a few study participants are from SASI as well — her son included. Besides hosting support groups, the program, which was co-founded by Arena with Stephanie Mendelson, provides resources and runs events and programs for special needs families.

Arena and her son were asked to complete a 500-question sur-

vey as part of the screening process, and have committed to 20 weeks of social groups.

What appealed to her about this study is Lerner’s concentration on trying to develop more effective treatments and therapies for ASD as opposed to looking for a cure.

“I always say, unless you’re going to do a lobotomy, [saying there is a cure] is baloney,” she said. “You can calm certain conditions of it down through behavior modification and therapy, but you cannot cure it. There’s no way to reverse how the brain has been formed. My son will have it forever.”

Schissel said Lerner’s study has the potential to change treatment options for those with autism as genome sequencing did for cancer.

Oncologists previously “threw the kitchen sink” at cancer and attacked tumors broadly. Once genome sequencing was developed, doctors could instead more easily treat tumors directly. Such an approach to ASD therapies would be more effective and “waste less time and enormous amounts of money,” she said.

Michael Greenberg, a social worker for outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry at Stony Brook Medicine, agreed that more specific treatments and therapies are more efficient and effective.

“It creates an opportunity to have the odds be the best the first time,” he said. “No one can predict what he’s going to find, but he’s trying to come up with something that can be replicated and benefit people more widely.”

The results from Lerner’s study might also be applicable to children without ASD. He said it is unclear whether the social patterns he and his team might uncover are unique to kids with autism. There is a potential for any treatments that stem from his findings to benefit any kid who struggles socially.

Autism awareness group gives smiles

The activities at Suffolk Aspergers/Autism Support and Information’s first annual Family Fun Day — zip lines, face painting, sand art and a water slide, in addition to the trampoline park — were the perfect outlet for J.J.’s vast supply of energy.

“People look at us differently,” she said. “For me, it’s important for J.J. not to have that painful experience.”

SASI, a not-for-profit support group that provides special needs families with helpful resources, provides that sense of community Melonie wants for J.J. They found there was a lack of resources on

“Parents found themselves lost, confused, hopeless, alienated, isolated and alone,” Arena said. “SASI created an environment where they could come together and share their stories and experiences.”

To its members, SASI provides information about available resources, advocacy, financial and emotional support. On the last Friday of every month, the group hosts speakers at John T. Polls give Clinton the edge in 2016, but the race is not over

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and, in presidential election years, the traditional beginning of the general election campaign. At this juncture Nate Silver’s popular website, FiveThirtyEight, has all but anointed Democrat Hillary Clinton as the inevitable winner over Republican Donald Trump in November. The 538 forecast based on an aggregation of polls gives Clinton a 70 percent chance, give or take a point, to defeat Trump. It is a victory not only in the popular vote but also in the Electoral College. The polling averages produced by RealClearPolitics and The Huffington Post agree. They all have shown a Clinton lead for months, punctured only briefly when Trump clinched the GOP nomination in primaries or won it at the Republican National Convention.

Polls are shining a bright light on Clinton’s prospects while casting a dark shadow on Trump’s. So it seems. How serious should we take these poll-driven forecasts?

By now we have lived with scientific polls in American presidential elections for 80 years. It started in 1936, when George Gallup conducted the first poll of a representative sample of American voters. For the record, he got it right that year. Few readers may be old enough to remember. Hillary Clinton’s lead in the polls at this point in the election cycle hardly guarantees victory. was running in 1936 against ... quick, who was the Republican opponent? OK, it was Alf Landon of Kansas. FDR led him in every poll conducted by Gallup and won in one of the biggest landslides — a great start. Gallup would not always be so lucky. In 1948,

his polling consistently showed Republican Tom Dewey defeating Democrat Harry Truman, the incumbent president, who wound up with the victory on Election Day. Back to Labor Day. At this point during the 2008 election cycle, Republican John

McCain was ahead of Democrat Barack Obama 49 percent to 44 percent in the Gallup poll. Many probably don’t remember it. McCain’s lead was famously trumpeted as a “game change,” triggered by his choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The strong showing of the GOP ticket in the polls raised the hopes of the McCain camp for a victory in the November, while unnerving the Obama camp. Then the economy took a sudden nosedive as Lehman Brothers collapsed and Wall Street crashed. As the candidate of the White House party, on whose watch this calamity occurred, McCain saw his fortunes tank in the polls. It also did not help that Palin, his vice-presidential candidate, came across as clueless and tongue-tied on television in interviews with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric. So, real-life events unfavorable to the White House party and missteps in the election campaign combined to reverse a lead in the polls that one side, McCain in this case, enjoyed at the beginning of the general election campaign. Lesson: Beware of pollsters bearing election forecasts eight weeks before Election Day. Helmut Norpoth is a political science professor at Stony Brook University and has designed models to forecast elections in the U.S. and abroad.

History enthusiast and Ward Melville High School 10th-grader Sahil Sangwan has been named one of three national Lincoln Forum Student Scholarship award winners.

As an honoree, Sahil has been invited to attend the annual meeting of the Lincoln Forum to be held in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, this November.

He was selected for this honor based on his comprehensive application, which included a three-page letter outlining his interests in President Abraham Lincoln and reflection on why he wanted to attend the forum. According to its website, the scholarship program “recognizes outstanding elementary and high school students who have demonstrated academic and extracurricular excellence as well as an interest in the life and career of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.”

Rice-Buckley: A dream come true This summer, with community support, Celeste Rice-Buckley, MPT, owner of Tri Fit Physical Therapy & Wellness in East Setauket, was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of attending the Olympics as a physical therapist.

In 1982 Rice-Buckley’s father signed his daughters up for the Olympic sports medicine conference in Lake Placid, when she was just in high school. Rice-Buckley recalls, “I remember the people I met at the conference: a skiing long jumper, orthopedic surgeons, start-up companies for braces with names everyone knows now.

Alongside those people, I watched slide shows that explained how to change the body mechanics of athletes to improve speed and efficiency. I was amazed and I said … I’m going! I’m going to the Olympics when I’m a PT. I made that statement again when I was in college in 1984, while watching the Olympics on television.”

Now the dream has come true. “At the opening ceremonies I had goose bumps.

I was among the best athletes from 200 countries. Some countries brought four athletes, others brought 50. All I could think of was how proud they all should be.”

Though she couldn’t understand a word of Portuguese, she didn’t need to. Brazil had outdone itself with the show and the athletes were all smiles.

Each athlete planted a seed in a box of soil to be transplanted into the forest. It was so touching, she said.

She said she spent most of her time at the aquatics center medical post, doing whatever she could to help out. She got to see other sports, and to talk to spectators, and families of athletes. “It was priceless,” she said.

In an interview with Chloe Beardsley, of NBC Sports, Rice-Buckley described her time working in Rio as the ”opportunity of a lifetime.” Awestruck at the skill and poise of the athletes, she said she felt honored to have been able to do her part.

Rice-Buckley has been working in physical therapy locally for more than 30 years.

Speaking about her experience, she stated how much she loves working in the Three Village area because of the diversity of patients. She looks forward to sharing her Olympics experiences and inspiring athletes of all ages to “go for the gold.”

OBITUARY Arthur Seneck

Arthur Seneck, 68, of Stony Brook, died Sept.

3, and the world lost one of the great ones. Arthur was taken from us way too early. He was married to his high school sweetheart Camille for 51 years.

He raised two daughters, Darla and Cheryl. He was a great provider and gave all of himself to his family.

He was a man everyone looked up to. He doted on his grandchildren, Ryan, Connor and Hannah.

He was a great father-in-law to Bill.

He was “Uncle Artie” to everyone. And there will never be anyone as funny, clever, witty, interesting, or generous as Arthur.

A funeral service was held at Branch Funeral Home. Cremation was private. Interment of ashes with a graveside service followed at St. Charles Cemetery.

Suffolk County extends help to first-time homebuyers Down Payment Assistance Program to help 35 families Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) recently announced the extension of the Suffolk County Down Payment Assistance Program, which assists first-time homebuyers with funds for a down payment to help make the “American Dream” of homeownership a reality.

Assistance will provide up to $10,000 in grant funding to eligible first-time homebuyers — helping an additional 35 Suffolk County families. Since the program’s inception, Suffolk County has helped more than 1,700 families with down payments on their first homes.

Applications are now being accepted through Nov. 30. Residents may download the application through the Community Development tab on the County’s website, www.suffolkcountyny.gov.

Applications will be accepted by mail only and may also be requested by telephone from the Community Development Office: 631-853–5705.

Bellone stressed that qualified Suffolk County residents must purchase a home within the consortium area. They will have 90 days from the date of issuance of the Purchase Certificate to submit a fully ex-

ecuted Contract of Sale to the Community Development Office — or 300 days to submit a fully executed contract of sale if the first-time homebuyer is purchasing a new construction home.

The consortium includes all of Suffolk County, excluding the Towns of Babylon and Islip.

The Energizer bunny has got nothing on Ingrid Herland. She celebrated her 106th birthday Sept. 18 with a whole weekend of partying. She shared birthday cake with her friends at Sunrise of East Setauket on Saturday and planned to spend Sunday with family at her daughter’s home.

Herland is an inspirational example of the power of positive thinking. A poetry lover, she recites verse from memory, some that she has written herself and some favorite poems — with a little Shakespeare thrown in for good measure.

Plastic bag fee looks to limit waste from LI shoppers Suffolk County legislator says he hopes fee will eventually go to environmental groups

It’s official: bagging your groceries will cost you.

The Suffolk County Legislature approved a 5-cent fee per plastic grocery bag this month, which will be collected and kept by stores.

The main goal of the legislation is to reduce bag waste by incentivizing shoppers to avoid the fee and bring their own bags.

“I feel relieved,” Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) said in a phone interview. “But I am also concerned.”

Spencer said he is “sensitive” to struggling families with the current cost of living, and doesn’t want them to feel like this is a new fee or tax being imposed on them.

“This is nothing new, people are paying for these bags already,” he said.

According to the legislator, grocery stores already work the price of the plastic bags they give away into the price of products they sell.

A report conducted by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments about plastic bags stated consumers pay $37.50 per year in hidden bag costs passed on by retailers.

But some residents are not on board with the future fee.

Suffolk County Legislator Sara Anker (D-Mount Sinai) said she heard many responses from senior citizens in her district that they don’t like the new bill.

“I had an overwhelming response from residents not supporting the fee,” she said in a phone interview. “To [the senior community] it’s just another expense. The 5 cents goes right back to the retailer, and it should really go to a designated environmental fund.”

The idea of the fee going to an environmental cause was first implemented in Washington D.C., the first place in the United States to impose a 5-cent fee on plastic bags, with the Anacostia River Cleanup and Protection Act. According to the legislation, only 1 out of the 5-cent fee is collected by the store, and the rest is deposited in the Anacostia River Cleanup and Protection Fund.

In a 2013 study of the D.C. law, researchers found that both residents and businesses reported a significant reduction in disposable bag use and a majority of residents and businesses supported the bag fee. In addition, both residents and businesses said they saw fewer plastic bags littering the area.

Spencer said creating legislation similar to that in D.C. was discussed, with part of the fee going toward an environmental cause, however it ended up being out of his control.

“I would love to do that, but we don’t have the taxing authority,” Spencer said.

“I would love to see that money go towards conservation,” he said. “But it is important to move forward now and not wait for the state to act. On a county level, we’ve taken the lead.”

Spencer said he hopes eventually the state will create legislation that will supersede his own, but for now he must continue to do his job.

Citizens Campaign for the Environment Executive Director Adrienne Esposito applauded Spencer’s legislation.

“Plastic bags are a mistake of the past,” she said in a statement. “Reusable bags are the solution for the future. This legislation will reduce plastic bag use by 60 percent or more and that will make our communities and our bays cleaner and greener, and save us money. Kudos to Suffolk County Legislator Doc Spencer for his leadership and persistence in protecting our environment.”

The CCE said there is more plastic in the oceans than plankton, with 46,000 pieces of plastic in every square mile. Many marine animals are choked and strangled by bags, or die consuming them. The CCE said plastic pollution negatively impacts 267 species of marine life.

John Durso, president of Local 228, a retail labor union and Long Island Federation of Labor, said the bill will introduce positive change to Suffolk County.

“The Suffolk County plastic bag law is truly an innovative bill that takes great steps to cut back on environmental waste, while also addressing the needs of local workers and businesses,” he said in a statement. “We were glad to work with the Suffolk County Legislature to collaborate on a landmark legislation that will protect our environment for future generations of Suffolk County’s working families.”

The fee will go into effect Jan. 1, 2018.

Lee battled up top all afternoon and had several close looks, but Brentwood’s defense double and triple-teamed him to keep him away from the box for most of the game.

“We need to keep the same mentality through the whole game,” Lee said. “And not get let down if we let up a goal.”

The Patriots have made the playoffs nearly every year over the last 20 years, according to Stecker, who hopes to put the team on a new trajectory to get them the postseason experience it so desperately needs.

“We do think [the Patriots are] going to be a much better team in October,” Stecker said. “Due to the fact that we really only have one or two seniors starting — there is a maturity aspect there — but again,

everyone steps on the field, everyone has a heart, so they should be giving 100 percent, there’s no excuses.”

Ward Melville deflated following a Brentwood score that unbalanced a 0-0 stalemate, and with the 2-0 loss on the boys’ soccer team’s home turf Sept. 19, the Patriots slipped under .500, falling to 2-3 in League I. “I think that we let down a little bit once we were scored on, and that’s something we’re looking to change,” Ward Melville head coach Jon Stecker said.

“Having a young team — we want them to grow in those areas. I don’t think they were out of the game, and I think we could’ve come back at 1-0, but at 2-0 I think we gave up a bit.”

He also doesn’t believe his team capitalized on its opportunities.

“You don’t get a lot of opportunities in soccer — it’s one of the sports unlike basketball or football,” Stecker said. “[Brentwood] had it a couple of times and they were able to finish, which is pretty indicative of how they play. We definitely need to take advantage more of those opportunities if we’re going to win games.”

Ward Melville sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Rosenthal made three big stops to preserve the clean sheet in the first half, but his team’s offense struggled to get a shot on goal.

“It was a rough game,” he said. “We played pretty well, but there was a 10-minute lapse and they put two in on us and that was it.”

He admitted he was nervous coming into the game but helped hold it down on the defensive side of the ball to maintain the 0-0 score heading into the second half.

“Brentwood is a good team, very competitive — but you have to keep your head

straight and stay motivated,” he said.

“It’s wet, so you really have to control the through balls, but I think we needed more through balls on the ground to be able to run into them, and more combination play.”

Rosenthal made a leaping save when he tipped the ball away with less than 25 minutes left to play, but five minutes later, as he came out of the box to make a save, the ball was passed up top to a forward who shot the ball into an empty net.

“I saw the ball go through and I was a little slow to react to it, so I tried to make up the space, but he was able to play it through and he was onside,” Rosenthal said. “So he got lucky there.”

At the 14:54 mark, Brentwood beat out Ward Melville’s defense up top, as the boys backed up, and the opposition beat out Rosenthal with a shot to the left corner for a 2-0 edge.

“It hurts a lot,” said junior forward and outside midfielder Harry Radke, who played outside back for much of the game.

“It takes a lot out of you after you’ve put in all that work, but we just have to rebound after that, and we didn’t do that today. We slacked at some points and that hurt us.”

Like Rosenthal, Radke said the team needs to improve its combinations while switching the ball more and communicating as a unit to help the team grow this season.

Senior forward Jared Lee said he agreed that his team collapsed once the first goal went in, but added that the time spent in the Patriots’ zone didn’t help.

“We spent too much energy playing defense,” he said, “and we didn’t have enough energy to get back up the field.”

Being one of the lone senior starters, Lee has his plate full leading his team on the field during gameplay, and standing as an example to show his teammates where the rest of them should strive to be.

“He is the best player that I’ve ever had in the last 20 years that I’ve been here,”

Letters to the editor

Grateful grandparents thank the community We thank the Village TIMES HERALD for the lovely tribute to our dear granddaughter Rebecca Lynne Weissbard (‘A Gold Medal equestrian’s legacy,” Sept. 15).

The story captured her love of horses and of life, her bubbly personality and her drive to do things the proper way in order to be the best. She was a unique and special young woman, not

just to us — but to everyone who’d ever met her.

We thank the paper as well for spreading the word about the Ride for Becca foundation that the family is establishing to keep her memory and her passion alive.

Finally, we wish to express our deepest appreciation for the outpouring of kindness and support, in so many different

ways, to the members of our family in the aftermath of this horrific event. We’re grateful to the thousands who attended her funeral, participated in a candlelight vigil and came together to ride in her honor. Bless you all for caring so much about this beautiful girl.

Do we really want these kinds of changes?

A new law will encourage Suffolk County residents to bring reusable bags to the grocery store with them.

The state should lend a hand to limit bags This month, Suffolk County took a step to help reduce plastic bag pollution.

The Suffolk County Legislature approved a bill that, starting in January 2018, will charge 5 cents per plastic bag used by a consumer at a grocery store. The idea of the law is to encourage residents to bring reusable bags to the grocery store with them to help reduce plastic bag waste that threatens marine life and the environment on the North Shore and across Long Island.

Like any bill, there were supporters and detractors.

Supporters praised the positive impact this bill would have on the environment and protestors argued that this is just another fee that is going right back to the grocery stores.

Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D- Centerport) introduced the legislation and agreed with voices that said the money should go somewhere else, like toward environmental organizations. However, he said it’s not that easy. The state must act and create a bill that supersedes his, since Suffolk County does not have the authority to impose a tax that would divide the fee.

So we as an editorial staff urge the New York State Legislature to take action and do what we see as a no brainer.

A plastic bag fee that gives the majority of the funds collected to an environmental group helps the Earth twice. People are encouraged to eschew plastic bags, while money is also raised to help the environment — from the people who choose not to do so.

Mr. Parmegiani’s recent letter ‘With Trump, a strong possibility for change’ (Letters, Sept. 8) neither refutes a single criticism of Donald Trump nor discusses a single substantive Trump policy proposal.

Moreover, in endorsing Trump’s promise to “make America great again,” the writer presumably agrees with his candidate’s assessment of the nation: “When the world looks at how bad the United States is … I don’t think we have a right to lecture.”

How remarkable — the standard bearer of the party that embraces American exceptionalism (and spent eight years charging President Obama with bad-mouthing the country) is now claiming that the United States lacks the moral authority to lead and is “a hellhole.”

Trump, after proclaiming that the “American Dream is dead,” has devoted a disproportionate share of his campaign to trashing every aspect of America: calling the United States military and

our generals and admirals “a disaster … reduced to rubble”; praising despotic Vladimir Putin as a better leader than President Obama; claiming American workers are overpaid even as he outsources jobs, seeks exemptions to hire foreign workers and calls for a reduction in the minimum wage; falsely generalizing, before all-white audiences, that black neighborhoods are “war zones” and experiencing “nothing but failure”; proclaiming, on Russian government-owned television, that the American media was “unbelievably dishonest”; and questioning the integrity of our republic by forecasting that the November elections will “be rigged.”

However, the more frightening aspect of Trump’s demagoguery is his utter disdain for and willingness to violate the Constitution: waterboarding and torturing suspected terrorists and killing their innocent families; threatening retaliation, if he becomes president, to his

critics; restricting freedom of the press, loosening libel laws, banning newspapers from covering his campaign and closing down parts of the internet; registering Americans and barring entry into the United States on the basis of religion; eliminating all restrictions on the government’s power of eminent domain; and challenging the independence of judges based on their ethnicity.

When confronted with his myriad unconstitutional proposals, Trump states: “You know, the Constitution, there’s nothing like it. But it doesn’t necessarily give us the right to commit suicide as a country, OK?” Mr. Parmegiani did get one thing correct: A Trump presidency would change America. But, thankfully America is already a great country capable of identifying and rejecting dangerous and divisive demagogues and the dangerous change they advocate.

No one would fund ISIS terrorists ... Right?

I was surprised to read that Professor Arnold Wishnia (Letters, Sept. 8), who should know better, believes that ISIS is not a serious threat to the United States, and should be dealt with by the police and FBI in a manner similar to their handling of bank robbers, tax cheats and other pesky miscreants.

Possibly the good professor has been listening to President Obama who thinks of ISIS as little more than a minor nuisance and has described them as “the JV team.”

Demonstrating that he is not a hard-core pacifist, Professor Wishnia graciously acknowledges that Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan were indeed “existential threats,” for which total mobilization on our part was indeed required, although he did not mention whether or not he approved of President Truman’s

decision to end the war with the use of atomic weapons.

But he does reassure us that ISIS, with a mere 20,000 to 30,000 Islamist terrorist fanatics at its disposal, is nothing to worry about. After all, we can see how the FBI handled the Dillinger gang and Whitey Bulger.

I am writing this on the day that marks the 15th anniversary of the attack on the United States by al-Qaida, an earlier Islamic terrorist group, which cost them a total of 19 of their finest idealistic young martyrs.

To assert that ISIS is not capable of a comparable outrage, because they do not possess the planes, ships, bombs and torpedoes that the Germans and Japanese had in the 1930s, and not more than 20,000 to 30,000 “soldiers,” is ludicrous.

and Nagasaki in 1945, each bomb weighed several tons, and our largest bombers, B-29s, had to be modified to carry these large payloads.

Today, thanks to modern technology, atomic bombs, like television sets, have become smaller, lighter and more efficient and may be easily transported to a convenient site for detonation.

The only real problem for an enterprising young terrorist is to get one, but, like many other problems, this can be solved with money.

Fortunately, that would probably require hundreds of millions of dollars. And, thankfully, no group of JV terrorists could ever get that kind of money. After all, no one in his right mind would give hundreds of millions of dollars to a bunch of terrorists. Right?

onday, we will finally get to see, on the same stage, the presidential candidates who hate each other, find each other unqualified, and who long ago seem to have taken the gloves off in their smackdown.

Here are just a few of the questions I’d ask the man and woman who would like to be our president: • People don’t like either of you, including politicians in Washington. Secretary Clinton, how will you bring together Democrats and Republicans,

• Mrs. Clinton, there’s a frequent line from courtroom dramas like Law & Order that goes something like this: “You said X when the detectives spoke to you and now you’re saying Y. Which is it? Were you lying then or are you lying now?” People don’t trust you. You don’t seem completely forthcoming, even about your pneumonia, until we see pictures of you stumbling into your SUV. How do we know when you’re sharing the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

• Mr. Trump, are you going to release your tax returns? The longer you go without sharing them, the more people wonder if you’re hiding something. You believe your opponent selectively discloses details about her-

self all the time, but you’re not sharing something most, if not all, candidates have shared. What gives?

• Mr. Trump, you have suggested on a few occasions that advocates of the second amendment might have something to say about Hillary Clinton’s position on gun control. You claim that people misinterpret what you say because you didn’t mean what you said when you wrote it. Your rhetoric, were you to be president, would mean something far different from what it does when you’re tweeting. If you were president, would you tamp down the bluster that people might misinterpret?

Do you feel you can and should be able to shoot from the hip, as it were, whenever it suits your interests?

• Neither of you seems ready to say the kinds of things we would hope to teach our children, such as “I’m sorry,” or “I was wrong.” Can each of you name a situation or circumstance in public life when you made a mistake and you recognize that you could and should have done better?

istory came alive on the distaff side last Monday night, as Liz Kahn Kaplan talked about the nine first ladies born in New York State. Kaplan, a longtime resident of this area and prominent member of the Three Village Historical Society, as well as an author and docent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, combined her appreciation for history and art with delicious details from the lives of the nine

So who are those women?

Some of them we can tick off readily: Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy, Barbara Bush and Nancy Reagan. Others are shrouded in more distant history. They are the wives of Presidents Monroe, Van Buren, Tyler, Cleveland

Here is an example of one of Kaplan’s anecdotes about these women.

Elizabeth Monroe, born of an aristocratic Loyalist family in 1768, who disregarded the disapproval of her father to go ahead and marry the patriot James Monroe, is generally credited with saving the life of Madame de Lafayette. The wife of the French hero of the American Revolution was incarcerated as a result of her aristocratic heritage during the Reign of Terror and about to be guillotined, as had been her grandmother, mother and sister before her. At the time, Monroe was the ambassador to France, but was unable to officially intercede. Elizabeth Monroe, not bound by diplomatic constraints, acted on her own and publicly went to visit Mme. Lafayette in prison, promising to return each day.

Not wanting an appearance of conflict with America, the French authorities released Mme. Lafayette the next day.

When Monroe became president, did the American public appreciate his wife? They did not, as Kaplan reported. She was far too elegant and aristocratic for American tastes.

Gardiner was Tyler’s second wife, and she attracted a lot of attention by being the first to marry a sitting president and for being 30 years younger than him. Tyler’s eldest daughter was five years older than her stepmother.

And so the stories unfolded, Kaplan keeping her audience totally engaged for well over an hour. Martin Van Buren, the first president to be born after American independence, and the only president to speak English as a second language, married his childhood sweetheart, Hannah Hoes. She spoke Dutch at home with her husband and was his first cousin once removed. Millard Fillmore married Abigail Powers, a schoolteacher. Both were upstate New Yorkers.

Grover Cleveland, who served two terms, but not consecutively, married Frances Folsom, a woman 22 years younger. A bachelor when he entered office, he married the daughter of a close friend. He had looked after her as executor of his friend, Oscar Folsom’s,

other, what policy do each of you guarantee wouldn’t change one iota and for which you would be inflexible or unwilling to compromise if either of you became president? Candidates often make promises they can’t keep when they’re elected. Is there anything you will pursue in its current form from your platforms?

• You both must recognize that your own rhetoric has alienated voters and raised concerns among various groups about your ability to lead and act on their behalf. Mrs. Clinton, how would you reconcile with Trump’s “deplorables,” as you put it, and Mr. Trump, how would you represent MuslimAmericans, Americans of Mexican heritage or any of the other people you’ve alienated if you became president?

• This campaign seems steeped in negativity. What is the most positive message each of you can share? How would that positive message make people feel better about the election and, down the road, the prospects for themselves and for this country? Be as specific as possible.

The other first ladies are well known to us. Eleanor Roosevelt is credited as the most influential and active first lady in our history. The longest-serving first lady, as wife of four-term president Franklin Roosevelt, she went on to a public life of her own. Jackie Kennedy became an American idol and is known for her cultural efforts and redecorating the White House. Barbara Bush, with her forthright style, her constant loyalty and support of her family, and refusal to dye her hair when her husband became president, was always a more popular figure than he. And Nancy Reagan, Ronald Reagan’s second wife, was a diminutive and elegant first lady whose life was dedicated to protecting her husband after the assassination attempt that wounded him and his press secretary.

They are fascinating women and we can claim them as our own.
