The free event will be filled with fun exploration, food, hands-on activities and performances highlighting the very best the university has to offer. All activities will be centered around the university’s main Academic Mall for easy access.

Proposed library budget shows slight increase

By Rita J. Egan rita@tbrnewspapers.com Three Village residents voting on the proposed Emma S. Clark Memorial Library 2018 budget will be voting “yes” or “no” on a slight increase over last year’s budget.

The proposed $5,235,398 budget for the library is $36,037 more than 2017 and would increase the tax levy by 0.69 percent.

President of the library board of trustees Linda Josephs credits Director Ted Gutmann and the library staff with keeping costs down for the Sept. 27 vote.

“We are able to consistently fulfill this responsibility due to the tireless efforts of our dedicated, professional director and

staff,” Josephs said in an email. “Our very small budget increases over the past several years without any decrease in services is a result of their performance.”

Gutmann said the relatively low increase is due to a few factors, including the library no longer seeing an increase in their bills from the New York State & Local Retirement System as they did for several years. Approximately two-thirds of the staff is hourly or part time, which reduces benefits costs. He said participating in the Partnership of Automated Libraries in Suffolk, a shared catalog/ circulation system for Suffolk County libraries, has led to a savings of more than $20,000 a year. The library installed a new, energy-efficient boiler and HVAC units, which reduce utility costs, according to the director, and in the future lighting will be converted to LED, another cost saver.

Gutmann said contributions have also helped to offset operating budget costs. Donations in the last few years have included money left in 2014 by deceased Three Village social studies teacher and author Philip Groia to build the Global Studies collection, and late patron Helen Stein Shack’s family establishing an endowment used to fund an annual book award for teenagers.

The library recently received aid from state Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport), which has allowed the library to create a new technology center, also install a new carbonmonoxide detection and alarm system.

Gutmann said in addition to the library offering paper books and e-books, it provides classes, one-on-one technology training and programs, and volunteer opportunities. There are also senior bus and social programs for older residents.

The director said he believes it’s important for residents to vote and have a say in library decisions.

“The library is one of the few places left for the community to come together,” Gutmann said. “We are a place where our

patrons can enhance their lives through books, programs, museum passes and online services. We are a unique educational and cultural resource that serves all ages in the Three Village community.”

The library budget vote will be held Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Periodicals Room in the historic section of the building. The library is located at 120 Main St. in Setauket. For detailed budget information, visit www. emmaclark.org.

“I loved being with all the kids,” she said. “They’re incredible in their resilience and they’re so excited to learn; they’re excited to be with people who want to be with them. I would love for them to experience the joy of making music, and just have something they can be proud of in saying I did this, I learned this, I can practice this.”

Guitarist Steve Salerno, who performs at The Jazz Loft often, was touched by Manuel’s accounts of his trips to Haiti and is looking forward to traveling with him to the country this year.

“It just sounded like an amazing opportunity to maybe share in what he’s experienced,” Salerno said. “I hope that this will be kind of a wondrous experience for them to hear different types of music performed collectively.”

Manuel believes the musicians will gain a lot from the trip.

“I’ve always felt, personally, and I know everyone going on the trip feels this way — we have all these different languages and all these differences that separate us, but in the end, we have more in common than we realize,” Manuel said.

“That’s part of why I think trips like this, outreaches like this, travel in general, whether you’re doing a specific mission or not, is so important for people. The more you travel, the more you spend time with human beings, the more you realize we’re more like each other than we’re not and music is a universal language.”

A fundraising concert is planned at the venue at 275 Christian Ave. in Stony Brook Oct. 5 to offset the cost of the trip, and used instruments can be dropped off at the location. The Jazz Loft is open Thursday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. and various evenings for performances. For more information call 631-751-1895.

Long Island’s coastal waters, bays still suffering

By Kyle Barr There’s still something in the water — and it’s not a good kind of something.

Scientists from the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences released an annual report highlighting the concern over the prolonged existence of toxic algae blooms, and a deficiency of oxygen in Long Island waters caused by high levels of nitrogen.

Stony Brook professor Christopher Gobler and several members of the advocacy collective Long Island Clean Water Partnership, a conglomerate of several Long Island environmental groups, revealed the findings of a study done from May to August.

“In order to make Long Island sustainable and livable, clean water needs to be established,” said Adrienne Esposito, the executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment. “The challenge has been very great over the last decade … though the problem, unfortunately, is getting a bit

worse. Algae blooms and the degradation of water quality across Long Island are serious threats to Long Island’s health.”

On the North Shore, there are several severe cases of hypoxia, or a depletion of dissolved oxygen in water, which is necessary for sea life to survive. Cases were found in Stony Brook Harbor, Northport Bay, Oyster Bay and Hempstead Bay. Measured on a milligram per liter of water scale, any case of hypoxia below 2 milligrams per liter can be harmful to fish, and almost anything else living on the bottom of the bays.

There were also periodic outbreaks of blue-green algae in Lake Ronkonkoma and Stony Brook University’s Roth Pond. This algae releases a poison harmful to humans and animals, but Gobler said students at the university shouldn’t worry, because he and other scientists at Stony Brook are constantly monitoring the water, especially George Hoffman, a trustee of the Setauket before the annual Roth Regatta.

There have been several efforts to help curb water degradation on Long Island. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed legislation in April that put $2.5 billion toward clean water protection, improving water infrastructure and building new sewer systems in Smithtown and Kings Park, and adding a rebate program for those upgrading outdated septic systems.

Despite doing more, the repairs will take some time.

“This is going to be a long, long marathon,” said Kevin McDonald, the conservation project director at The Nature Conservancy said.

There is also worry that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers — announcing the dumping of dredged materials into Long Island Sound — could compound the problem.

“We have more political funding and will try to implement solutions,” Esposito said. “The problems are getting worse, but the solutions are becoming clearer.”

At about 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18, a 16-year-old male from Medford driving a 2017 Dodge on Route 25A in Miller Place intentionally struck a 2015 Ford, which was an unmarked police car, and fled the scene of the accident, according to police. Marked Suffolk County Police cars then followed him, and he ignored the lights and sirens instructing him to pull over, police said. When he eventually stopped on West Canal Road in Mount Sinai and police apprehended him, they discovered he possessed a clear baggy containing marijuana; a quantity of heroin exceeding 1/8 of an ounce; a white, plastic magnetic strip card encoded with a Visa debit or credit card account number belonging to someone else; and a plastic credit card embossing machine used to falsify credit cards, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal possession of a narcotic drug, second-degree possession of a forged instrument, unlawful possession of marijuana, third-degree fleeing of an officer in a vehicle, reckless driving and third-degree criminal mischief.

A bite out of crime

At the OK Petroleum gas station on Middle Country Road in Centereach Sept. 16, a 24-year-old man from Mastic stole two alcoholic beverages, according to police. When police tried to arrest him, he kicked and bit the officer, attempted to grab the officer’s Taser and refused to comply with verbal commands from the officer, police said. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny and second-degree obstruction of government administration.

Cashing out

A 31-year-old woman from Wyandanch deposited several forged checks into a Bethpage Federal Credit Union Bank account Sept.

18 and withdrew the money from the bank despite knowingly not having enough funds to cover the withdrawal, according to police.

She was arrested in Selden and charged with third-degree grand larceny.

Ice cold

At Ralph’s Italian Ices on Route 25A in Miller Place, a 22-year-old man entered Sept. 15 at about 10:30 p.m., displayed what appeared to be a handgun and attempted to remove cash from the register, according to police.

He was arrested Sept. 18 in Selden and charged with first-degree robbery.

Search and seized

While executing a search warrant at a home on Ruland Road in Selden Sept. 15, police discovered a quantity of cocaine belonging to a 32-year-old man who lived in the home, according to police. The search warrant was granted in connection with several heroin sales by the man between July 31 and Sept.

8, which took place within 1,000 feet of Newfield High School, police said. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and three counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

Loud court

At 8 p.m. Sept. 17, someone stole a wallet containing cash and credit cards from an unlocked 2017 Toyota parked outside of a home on Quiet Court in Miller Place, according to police.

Car break-in

A wallet was stolen from a 1993 Toyota parked outside of a home on Maryanne Avenue in Port Jefferson Station at about 10 p.m.

Sept. 17, according to police.

Plates pinched

At about midnight Sept. 17, a license plate was stolen off of a 2009 Honda while it was parked on Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai, according to police.

Sneaker culture’s hidden Setauket mecca For those who think malls or sporting goods stores are the only place on Long Island to find brand name sneakers, a hidden gem consignment store, the likes of which is near-impossible to find outside of Manhattan, exists nestled in a small shopping center on Main Street in East Setauket, waiting to be combed by the trained eye of the limited-release shopper.

Everyday from noon until 8 p.m., Sean Cassidy tends to sneaker fanatics, also known as sneakerheads who shop at his store looking for their own personal “holy grail pair.”

“They wanna hold it, they wanna see it, they wanna make sure it’s real, they wanna make sure the box is authenticated, they want to make sure everything is OG, which means everything is original,” Cassidy said during an interview at Krudmart, a local haven for a booming demographic in search of high-end, hard to find kicks. Cassidy, 40, is the owner of Krudmart, a streetwear store located at 244 Main St. across from the historic Brewster House.

Cassidy bought into the franchise in 2012 from the original Krudmart owners, which was then an online clothing retailer started in 2002. Now the sole owner of the franchise, Cassidy has turned Krudmart into a hot spot for exclusive footwear.

Krudmart didn’t start out selling limited sneakers. It focused on clothes until kids started bringing sneakers in hoping to leave them on the shelves to be sold. Cassidy said he soon realized sneakers were attracting more customers.

All the sneakers lining the walls at Krudmart are limited release, meaning when released at retail prices they are usually sold out within hours. Those who missed out must find other avenues to get their hands on an exclusive pair.

“The limited sneakers are what is our bread and butter,” Cassidy said. Limited release sneakers are what have the resell value, according to the owner, and the sizable fan base to match. Most of the more popular styles are from Adidas’ Yeezy line and Nike’s Jordans.

Rapper Kanye West releases about three to four styles annually on his Yeezy line, and Air Jordan releases about 20-30 sneakers per year.

Both tend to release a limited number of pairs,

which drives demand.

“If a shoe we know is gonna mass produce we don’t even bother with it,” Cassidy said.

One of Cassidy’s employees started as a customer who would just hang around the store. Matt Mantone, 30, was brought into Krudmart by a mutual friend and soon started up a friendship with Cassidy, which lead him to being invited to join the team.

Mantone said a big part of staying ahead of the market is tracking social media ahead of releases to gauge demand.

“You go on social media and you see people posting up stuff that’s coming up,” he said.

“You can kinda get a feel just by reading comments and how people are responding to it whether it’s gonna do well or not.”

The releases that generate a buzz ahead of time are the ones Krudmart hones in on, knowing shoppers left out in the cold from retailers will soon be headed their way. The key to dealing with exclusive sneakers, according to Cassidy, is staying informed and being on top of new information.

“We know a month before the shoe comes out whether it’s gonna be something we should go after,” Cassidy said. The prices can change weekly on secondary markets, so navigating the blogs, websites and social media feedback is extremely important, according to the team.

Cassidy said he has seen resale values fluctuate immensely on a given release, even going from $350 to $1,000 in just two years in the case of most styles of Yeezys.

Cassidy said he finds people he can trust to make sure he’s getting the real deal on sneakers, not imitations. The shop has a tight-knit group of loyal, honest consignors whom he trusts.

He said he would rather buy the shoes from sellers than have them consigned because there’s no guarantee they will sell at consignment prices set by a private seller. The shoe could sit on the shelves for months if the ask is out of whack.

“The typical thing you’ll see with the consignors someone will come in with a shoe that we’ll sell for like $250-$300 in the store, and they’ll say something like, ‘Oh, I saw a pair on eBay for $500,’” Mantone said. “My first question is, ‘Well, is it someone listing it on eBay or did it sell on eBay for $500?’”

According to Cassidy, the biggest problem with shopping online is counterfeit sneakers. “There were so many fakes of that shoe because they’re worth money,” he said, pointing to the shelf. “Anything that’s worth money they’re gonna duplicate.”

This leads him to be very careful when making purchases on the internet.

“In general, you don’t know what you’re gonna get online,” he said. “There’s a lot of fakes. There’s a lot of shoes that are worn.

We don’t buy online because of that reason.

People are always inquiring for us to buy stuff from out of state, and the only way I do that it is if they ship it to me, so we can legit check it.”

Counterfeit sneakers can be a huge issue for shoppers who don’t know much about limited-edition sneakers, especially unassuming parents browsing the internet for the best deals for their kids.

“They just think they found a steal,” Cassidy said. “Then they get the shoe, they give it to their kid. Their kid posts it on social media, Instagram: ‘Look at me!’ Then there’s a million

For those that have been tricked, Krudmart employees offer to take a look at the sneaker, note what’s off, and put in writing for the buyer that the purchase was a fake, which can then be sent to credit card companies to dispute the charge and hopefully obtain a refund.

Some fakes are so convincing they’ve slipped by the Krudmart team.

“I’ve had them where they sold and people came back and I had to return the money,” Cassidy said. “I’ve never not returned the money, I’ve taken losses.”

He estimated he’s dealt with less then 10 counterfeit pairs over the past three years.

“It’s a tough game, they’ve gotten that good,” he said. “The only benefit is we learned, ‘Wow, we have to lift this up, look at the stitching here,’ it gets down to that kind of details.

Buy it online, that’s the risk.”

The demographic for sneakerheads ranges anywhere from elementary school kids to

those who actually watched Michael Jordan play in the NBA in the ’90s. Some passed the bug down to their children and even grandchildren. Cassidy said he thinks the sneakerobsessed demographic is ageless, nodding to the baby-sized Yeezys as proof of how much the culture has grown.

The resale prices of certain styles would likely drop the jaw of someone outside of the culture, which Cassidy acknowledged.

Cassidy pointed to a limited-release sneaker that has a resale value exceeding $250.

“Parents think $250 is a lot for a shoe, which it is, in layman’s terms,” he said. “But, for that shoe in particular, if someone had them for $250 I would not even hesitate to buy 100 of them if they were real.”

Like the growing culture of sneakers, Cassidy said he has plans for growth for Krudmart. He wants to eventually open another location while making his e-commerce store stronger.

Stony Brook church members race to raise funds Members of a local congregation will be pounding the pavement Oct. 1 to raise funds for their historic church, one that was designed by renowned architect Stanford White in 1889.

All Souls Episcopal Church’s 90 members are inviting runners and walkers of all ages and denominations to join them as they participate in the 9th annual Soles for All Souls 5K Race/2K Walk. Dan Kerr, race and church membership chairperson, said it’s the second year he is heading up the event.

His wife Susan Kerr and friend Mary Ellen Doris started the race after the late priest in charge, Mother Ann Plummer, asked mem-

bers, “Why don’t you do something to get the community more active.”

Susan Kerr, the church’s head of fundraising, said Doris suggested the race, but she herself was skeptical at first if the church committee could pull it off. However, Doris had experience with running and was confident that it would be a success, and the first year they attracted approximately 100 runners.

The two organized the race together every year until Doris moved to South Carolina.

Kerr continued to chair the race until her job as a physical therapy assistant required her to work more hours. That’s when she passed the baton to her husband, and he stepped in to head up the race.

Relieved of her organizational duties, Kerr said last year at 62 years old she competed in her first race and came in first in her division in Soles for All Souls. She said as a former power walker, who began her quest to run by taking it one mailbox at a time, she believes anyone can take up running.

“Enjoy the process and compete only against yourself,” she said.

Kerr said her husband has been doing a great job organizing the race these last two years. She said he is fastidious in his organization and has taken the event to the next level and brought in more sponsors.

“He really knows how to get out there and get sponsors, advertising on the back of

shirts,” she said.

Dan Kerr said approximately 120 serious and casual runners and walkers participated in last year’s race. He said his wife and Doris carefully planned the route before the first race in 2009 wanting to make sure it was exactly five kilometers and both challenging and scenic.

“The people who run it tend to be people who are serious runners,” he said. “They run in a lot of races, and they always tell us our race, although it’s small, is one of the best planned and has one of the most beautiful routes, especially when they come to the end when they come down Sand Street on the last leg and they get to run along the harbor.”

The church’s senior warden Steven Velazquez has run in the race for five years along with his daughter Veronique, while his wife Suzanne helps at the event. He said the fundraiser brings the members of the church together as they promote and work on it, and Dan has been doing a phenomenal job.

“It connects our small church together, it binds us together,” Velazquez said.

He said many children run in the race, and now that they’re getting older, keeping up with them is becoming more challenging. While he used to run on a regular basis and participate in Northport’s Great Cow Harbor 10K Race, he broke his leg a few years ago and hasn’t been able to run as much in recent years.

“I’m not the greatest runner but I’m happy to complete it,” he said.

The race begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 1 rain or shine. To register, go to www.active.com and search for Soles for All Souls. Fee is $25 for adults and $10 for children under 18 before Sept. 24 and $30 for adults and $15 for children afterward and on the day of the race.

According to “School district welcomes new drug and alcohol counselor” in the July 20 edition of The Village Times Herald, the district has hired a substance abuse counselor.

Heather Reilly, certified social worker, will be tasked with rotating through the secondary schools one day each week (including the Three Village Academy alternative high school program), providing substance abuse counseling, educating faculty about warning signs and drug lingo, and creating educational curriculum for sixth-graders in collaboration with elementary health teachers. She will also be available to work directly with families.

While this is a laudable first step, it’s not nearly enough. Change will not happen without a concerted community effort. Parents need to accept the fact that this is a real problem affecting Three Villagers across the cultural and economic spectrum. Yes, it could even be your child.

Folks must come to grips with the fact that chemical dependency is a potentially fatal illness and that 90 percent of sufferers go untreated. They need to acknowledge that kids who are addicted to alcohol and/or opioid drugs are not “bad” kids. They are youngsters whose brains are not fully developed, who made bad choices that led to a tragic outcome. It’s time for all of us to learn all we can about prevention and to come together to end this plague.

The Three Village school district welcomed a new drug and alcohol counselor recently.

There’s a lot you can do. For starters, attend the monthly meetings at the Bates House in Setauket. Dates and times are listed on Facebook on the Three Village Drug & Alcohol Awareness Parent Group page — along with other helpful information. Learn when and how to begin to talk to your child about the dangers of alcohol and drugs and your family’s rules concerning underage drinking and substance abuse. A good place to begin is at New York State’s online site www.talk2prevent.ny.gov.

The next meeting at the Bates House, located at 1 Bates Road in Setauket, will be held Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.

Legislature votes to approve heroin, opiate panel

Another push for a Suffolk County drug advisory panel has been made, and approved.

At the general Legislature meeting Sept.

6, the members passed Introductory Resolution 1664 to create a panel that will provide ongoing guidance and input to the county in combating the opioid issue. The panel will take an interdisciplinary approach by focusing on preventative education, enhancement of law enforcement efforts, and aiding in treatment and rehabilitation.

“A coordinated, continuous and interdisciplinary approach is needed to fully address the epidemic and implement sustainable change,” Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) said.

The ever-evolving nature of the opiate problems within the county will be addressed by a panel that will include members of the county Legislature — Anker, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville), Chair of the Public Safety Committee Kate Browning (D-Shirley), Chair of the Education and Human Services Committee Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood) and Chair of the Health Committee William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport). The panel will also include representatives from the police department, sheriff’s department and department of health, as well as local rehabilitation providers, advocacy groups, hospitals and the county superintendents’ association.

“The opioid epidemic has Suffolk communities in its grip, and it is time to create a long-term, countywide response to the crisis,” Gregory said. “This panel brings together more than a dozen of the most qualified and connected individuals and organizations in a position to make a difference.”

Police Commissioner Tim Sini (D), who is on the panel, said it is a positive piece of legislation.

“We are seeing this overdose epidemic develop from pills to heroin to the leading

cause in Suffolk County, now Fentanyl,” Sini said. “Suffolk has not been spared. There have been recommendations made for previous panels at the state and county level — some have been adopted, and this allows us a forum to make additional recommendations and visit previous ones to be implemented and fine-tuned.”

He has some of his own ideas he will bring to the table.

“We need to invest in prevention and ways to keep people sober,” he said. “We opened the first recovery center — THRIVE — but we need more, and maybe even recovery high schools, to provide an environment that fosters support, especially when there’s the errors insurance companies [make] treating addiction.”

He said he likes that there is a wide array of those in support of, and providing input on the panel.

“You need all the stakeholders at the table,” he said. “This isn’t just a public safety issue, it’s first and foremost a public health issue.”

An intervention program has already been put in place by the police department recently, to help put people in touch with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence.

“When a police officer or detective comes into contact with intelligence for someone who needs substance abuse treatment, we will directly contact LICADD to get that person treatment,” he said. “We’re not just arresting drug dealers, but also connecting people to much-needed treatment.”

It is anticipated that the advisory panel will meet for the first time at the beginning of October. Following the first meeting, the group will meet quarterly and will provide regular reports to the appropriate county committees, and all meetings will be open to the public. To aid in the efforts, the panel will conduct a minimum of two formal public hearings annually to acquire necessary information and data to assist it in developing further recommendations.

An experimental film created by Jamie Nagel, a junior at Ward Melville High School in the Three Village Central School District, has been selected for this year’s All American High School Film Festival, which will be held in New York City Oct. 7.

Nagel’s film, “Youth,” was based upon a poem she wrote and will be screened in

Times Square as part of the festival.

Following the screening, Nagel will attend an awards ceremony and reception at the historic Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.

Student filmmakers in the school district have been selected for this high honor for the past several years. Nagel created her film under the guidance of teacher Stephanie DiLorenzo, who is pictured above with Nagel (left).

obituarieS Leonard Carl Nelson

Leonard Carl Nelson, 96, of Stony Brook died Aug. 23.

Born in Avery, Iowa Aug. 26, 1920, he was one of four sons of John and Nellie Nelson.

Leonard received a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Nor t hwester n University.

After working at General Motors, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then as associate professor of engineering at North Carolina State University. He was recruited as dean of engineering at West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery, West Virginia, and subsequently served as president for 25 years. The Leonard C. Nelson College of Engineering and Sciences at West Virginia University Institute of Technology is named in his honor.

While in the Navy, Leonard married Barbara Parcher, and the couple had four children. After his wife’s death, he married Rita Wicks-Poulos and became a stepfather to Nicholas, Rick and Lise Poulos.

He was predeceased by brothers Kenneth, Donald and Dwight; his first wife and

stepson Rick.

Saddened by his loss but enriched by Leonard’s love are Rita Wicks-Nelson; sons Randall (Johnett) and David (Pat); daughters Laurie Adams (Mark) and Sherri McLean (Mike); stepson Nicholas Poulos (Nancy); stepdaughter Lise Poulos; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and numerous other family and friends. Interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Port Jefferson.

Joan M. Mazurczak, 77, of Stony Brook, died July 20. She was born Nov. 3, 1939, in Brooklyn.

She was the daughter of John and Mary Sefchik. Joan was a retired clerical worker for New York Telephone Company.

She enjoyed knitting, reading, painting birdhouses and cooking Polish meals.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Rudy, other family members and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Patriots power past Longwood to remain undefeated

The Ward Melville girls volleyball team pulled away from Longwood 25-11, 25-20, 25-14 for its fifth sweep and sixth straight win of the season Sept. 19 to remain undefeated.

Head coach Charlie Fernandes said he hasn’t been afraid his team was going to lose, but thought in earlier games this season the Patriots eased up on its opponents. As of late, he said he’s enjoying seeing his Patriots (6-0 overall, 4-0 League I) play with fire to the end of matches.

“We want to play everybody as hard as we can and I thought in an earlier match this year we were performing well, but we let up a little,” he said. “Today we played all out the whole time and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Ward Melville jumped out to an early 8-4 lead and scored four straight points before a Longwood hit slammed into the middle of the Patriots defense. The Lions hit out of bounds on the next serve and then an out-of-bounds

hit handed Ward Melville two of its next three points before Longwood called timeout. The team still couldn’t regroup from there, and the Patriots cruised to the end of the set.

“Game one was very efficient and we started filtering the other kids in,’” Fernandes said.

“I thought everyone did a great job.”

Ward Melville junior middle blocker Morgan Persky, who had four blocks, said her team wanted to bring the same high level of play and energy onto the court against Longwood that it did Sept. 15 at Smithtown West.

After winning the first set against Longwood by 14 points, she said she thought her team again took its foot off the gas.

“We came into the second set a little bit more relaxed, and we made some unforced errors,” she said.

The teams stayed neck and neck throughout most of the set. Ward Melville held advantages early and jumped ahead by five points at 116, but Longwood closed the gap over the next few minutes to tie the set at 12-12 and again at 16-16. Fernandes called timeout to get his players on the same page, and despite jumping ahead again, Longwood tied the game at 20-20 before the Patriots closed the set scoring the final five points. “After the timeout at 16-16 in the second set we realized that we needed to step it up,” Persky said. “I felt that we played much better after that and took control of the court from that point forward. This year, we have been very strong offensively from both the net and the service line.”

The team had holes to fill in the lineup after most of the starters were lost to graduation before this year, but senior setter Courtney Heaney said her team has adjusted well.

“A lot of us have been playing together for a long time,” she said. “We all play club together, and I think we have really good energy on the court, and togetherness, which helps to fill in those gaps left from last year.”

Fernandes said the return of two now senior outside hitters in Ashley Fuchs and Ryen Cinski has also put the team in the position it’s in.

“No one knows about them because they both sat out last year with ACL injuries,” he said. “On the court and off the court we have a tight-knit group and that always matters. I think something good is happening here.”

Heaney also gave a glowing review of her two teammates returning from injuries.

“They’re better than ever,” she said of the two outside hitters. “They’ve been doing really well — [they provide] big energy out there.

Our biggest players are our outsides. We’re doing really great things this year and I’m really excited about it. We’re on a really great path.”

Persky said the team is working on maintaining its aggressiveness no matter who is on the other side of the court or what the scoreboard says, and Fernandes said he expects that killer instinct to come in time.

“We’re going to work on our defense,” he said, laughing. “It’s mid-September, so the coaches and I joke that there’s certain things we haven’t even worked on with the team yet in practice, and we’re already this good. For the first time in a long time we have a bench that I go to without blinking. We’re a good, strong volleyball team. Heck, this is a tremendous volleyball team, and I think we’re going to be in it at the end.”

Love thy neighbor North Shore residents have been given the opportunity to welcome people with unique challenges or auxiliary needs to their neighborhoods. Unfortunately, many have not greeted their potential neighbors with open arms.

Complaints in three neighborhoods have popped up despite past successes of nonprofits that strive to create a better life for those with disabilities. While many cite traffic and safety issues, arguments seem to lead back to the same thing — fear that property values will go down.

When Smithtown-based Developmental Disabilities Institute purchased a home on Henearly Drive in Miller Place to house six low-functioning autistic adults more than 21 years old, as well as three full-time staff members, many street neighbors objected. Among the issues cited were homeowners’ concerns that staff members entering and exiting the property would cause an increase in traffic and safety hazards in the area.

The opposition is in spite of the fact that the nonprofit DDI successfully runs more than 30 homes throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties, many of which are located in residential areas. The organization also works with the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities in Albany to gauge the number of group homes in an area to ensure that it is not oversaturated.

One resident said she was hesitant about strangers driving up and down her block multiple times and hanging out and smoking, and expressed that concern over her property value.

On Sept. 5 a similar scenario played out in Smithtown as Long Hill Road residents petitioned the town regarding a future adult home for six developmentally disabled women. The residence was purchased by Catholic Guardian Services, a religious nonprofit that provides a wide array of services and support for the needy in New York.

Like the Henearly Drive residents, Long Hill neighbors chose to argue the potential increase in traffic would create safety hazards. One homeowner Screenshot from Facebook claimed, “The nature and Comments in a closed group in response to the character of the surrounding area would be our Sept. 7 story on the Miller Place house. substantially altered due to these predicted problems.”

In Port Jefferson last month, a lengthy debate broke out on an unofficial villagers Facebook group after a member posted a photo with an angry blurb about the eyesore that is homeless people sleeping at the Port Jefferson Long Island Rail Road station when they cannot be admitted to Pax Christi Hospitality Center.

While we understand the concern over a decrease in property value in each of these three cases, these groups benefit neighborhoods and its residents. There is a track record of success and of upkeep, and we were happy to see others cry out in support of these homes. According to a thread on the Mount Sinai-Miller Place Community Facebook page, the support for the DDI home in Miller Place is overwhelming. It’s nice to see neighbors supporting neighbors, and to see those same people wanting to show that a small group of individuals and their opinions may not always speak for the thoughts and feelings of an entire hamlet or village.

We’d like to preach a reminder that a little bit of compassion toward fellow citizens can go a long way in creating a healthier environment for all.

A thank you to Ward Melville High School My 15-year-old daughter was not yet born on the tragic and historic day of Sept. 11, 2001, and it’s sometimes a challenge to convey to someone her age what a horrific chapter it was in our nation’s history. We all hear every so often the phrase “Never forget” when it comes to 9/11.

Every year on 9/11, Ward Melville High School proudly displays several American flags along the roadside to show that the Three Village Central

School District has indeed not forgotten. I just wanted to take a moment to express how much I appreciate, as a parent of a 15-year-old with no 9/11 memories of her own, the high school and all its administration taking the time and effort every year to make this wonderful gesture to demonstrate to the younger generation the true meaning of “Never forget.”

Flags honor 9/11 victims.

Cantwell is not indicative of Stony Brook It appears to be an undeniable fact that one Christopher Cantwell, a Stony Brook native who lived here for the first 32 years of his undistinguished life, was an organizer of a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. As a result of his activities at that event, he was arrested and charged with felony assault, has been denied bond, and is presumably locked in a cell.

Here in Stony Brook, any person, of any color, can walk the streets at any hour of the day or night, without fear for his or her safety or his or her life. Furthermore, any person, of any color, can apply for any job in Stony Brook, or purchase any property, or attend any school or house of worship, without fear of rejection due to racial bias.

Why then do our clergy and elected politicians find it necessary to lecture us — in the Sept.

Every person, whether he is tall, short, smart, dumb, good, bad or indifferent, has to be born somewhere, and the fact that Christopher Cantwell chose Stony Brook is a happenstance for which we cannot be blamed.

In past history, particularly in the years prior to 1965, racial bigotry and segregation were prevalent in many parts of the United States, led by political leaders including Presidents Andrew Johnson and Woodrow Wilson, Govs. Ben Tillman and George Wallace, and Sens. J. William Fulbright, Russell Long, and, of course, the recently departed Robert Byrd, who achieved the level of Exalted Cyclops in the Ku Klux Klan. Can there be a common denominator among these fine fellows?

Following the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, segregation and discrimination in this country were made illegal and their occurrences were

drastically reduced, although not eliminated entirely. In the years since, Americans of goodwill have worked tirelessly to comply with these laws, and the results have been exemplary, in my opinion, and particularly so in Stony Brook.

I lived with my family in Stony Brook for 38 years, for part of that time next door to a black man, and we could not have had a better neighbor. He was always friendly, mowed his lawn, paid his taxes, and went out of his way to do more than his share of plowing the snow on the road we shared. When we finally sold our house, the buyers were a black couple, and the house looks better today than it did when we sold it.

If anyone knows of a significant pattern of racial bias in Stony Brook, I would like to hear about it. When that circumstance happens to eventuate, please provide us with a lecture on how to correct it.

Kudos to the Emma Clark library The Emma S. Clark Memorial Library has impressed me since the first day I entered it in Aug. 1962, a few days after I had moved into the area from New York City. What a grand moment that was. And, after more than a half-century of dwelling in this fine community, I feel almost the same degree of excitement whenever I enter that stimulating building.

Our famed library is, in my opinion, one of Long Island’s finest.

Not only does the building contain

a grand circulation supply of books, DVDs and CDs, but it also has many fine reference books, magazines, newspapers and a fine children’s section. Plus, an area where one can buy used books and other items at a delightfully low price.

Furthermore, the library sponsors helpful meetings and lectures and offers additional services. And, most important of all, it is staffed by very polite, knowledgeable, pleasant and helpful workers of all ages. A grand team.

Hats off to all of those connected with the library, especially to its fine director, its excellent board, its outstanding employees, and, above all, to my fellow local residents who have so generously supported it for decades.

Shortly, the annual opportunity for Three Village residents to vote for the next library budget will be upon us. I fervently hope that the budget will pass.

I

f we stepped outside tomorrow to a 52 degree day, we’d race back inside and put on a coat.

If we opened the door in January to the same temperature, we might race back into the house to shed that same coat.

It’s all about expectations.

Our daughter figured that out several years ago. Gone are the days when she tells us she thinks she did well on a test.

She doesn’t want us to ask, “What happened?” or

Instead, she often tamps down our expectations, indicating that we’d better brace for the equivalent of the academic cold. If she does better than expected, she won’t have to contend

with questions. If she met the lowered expectations, she can say that, even if she didn’t do well, she can take consolation in knowing how she performed.

Yes, relationships are all about managing those expectations.

Let’s take a quick look at President Trump. He’s a shoot-from-the-tweet president. He frequently misspells words, gets facts wrong here and there, and attacks his opponents, his allies and anyone in between according to his mood.

Has he done the same thing as our daughter? Is he resetting our expectations? Is he pleased to redefine the notion of a modern-day president?

If, and when, he seems levelheaded, deliberate and considerate, is he climbing over a bar he reset for himself, giving us a chance to applaud the manner in which he interacted with a public prepared for a stream of anger and disdain?

Relationships, as Harry from the movie “When Harry Met Sally” knew all too well, are also about setting expectations. When Harry (played

by Billy Crystal) is sharing one of his many philosophies of life with Sally (Meg Ryan), he suggests that he never takes a girlfriend to the airport early in a relationship because he doesn’t want her to ask why, later in the relationship, he doesn’t take her to the airport anymore.

Some people’s jobs, like stock market analysts, meteorologists and oddsmakers, involve setting expectations.

Built into their forecasts, meteorologists often leave the back door open, in case they’re wrong. As in, “It probably won’t rain, but there’s a 15 percent chance of precipitation today.”

While that forecast is innocuous enough, it leaves a small measure of flexibility in case the weather people missed a heavy band of rain clouds from their Doppler models, which happened recently, leaving my wife disappointed and dripping wet at her office after trudging through an unexpected shower.

Of course, a meteorologist who predicted rain every day in anywhere but Ketchikan, Alaska, where the locals

say it rains 400 days a year, wouldn’t last long, as people would bristle at carrying unnecessary umbrellas through the brilliant sunshine Many years ago, my wife and I went to see a movie. When we got to the theater, the film was sold out.

Instead of turning around, we bought tickets to a film on which we hadn’t read any reviews and knew nothing. We wound up watching “Shakespeare in Love.” We thoroughly enjoyed it, in part because we had no expectations.

Perhaps the most difficult expectations to meet, or exceed, are our own.

Raising the bar for anything — the taste of the food we cook, our performance during a presentation or our ability to stay calm in a crisis — involves risk. Then again, once we clear our new expectations often enough, we know what we can expect of ourselves and can move on to bigger challenges. The rewards, even if we never tell anyone how much more we accomplished than we expected, seem well worth the risk.

A toast to the beauty of upper New York state

his past week, we went “shufflin’ off to Buffalo.” Bet you don’t know where that expression came from. I certainly didn’t know that “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” is a song from Act II of the 1933 movie, “42nd Street,” and that it was a railroad saying even earlier. All I had to say was that I was going to Buffalo, and the response was immediate: “Shufflin’ off?” I was asked.

The second reaction was also the same. “Better bring your long underwear,” I was urged. “And a shovel. Is it

underwear. I did bring a pair of shorts, but I did not wear them because I didn’t see anyone wearing shorts in the city. When I am traveling, I’m a big believer in the “When in Rome” adage.

Actually the city looked quite pleasant to me, larger than I had imagined, clean and with a fair share of tall buildings. The population of more than 250,000 residents makes it the second largest city in the state. I understand that Buffalo, like a number of rust-belt cities, has undergone quite a face-lift.

Admittedly I did not see much of it since I was there for the fall meeting of the New York Press Association, and that meant I was locked into the hotel site where the workshops were held. But we did have a chance to look around a bit when we went out to the Anchor Bar, where Buffalo chicken wings were allegedly invented. It’s a pleasant and good-sized sports bar, and most people at the tables were, sure enough, having chicken wings with blue-cheese dip and cut-up celery sticks on the side, although one lady was eating a good-looking dish of shrimp scampi. She must have been a native.

In the way of cultural attractions, the city has an art museum, a science museum, a theater district, multiple art galleries, and the historic Martin House that was recommended for viewing.

Buffalo was once the scene of considerable wealth from the auto industry, where Pierce-Arrow automobiles were manufactured, also the railroads and the Erie Canal. As a result there are a number of urban mansions. It also has a river walk on Lake Erie that houses several eateries. Food, in fact, is big.

And people we met, in restaurants, the hotel and on the streets were friendly and unhurried — such a change of pace for a native New Yorker like me or even someone born and bred on Long Island. It always helps when the weather is beautiful, which it was for our entire stay.

The Buffalo Transportation PierceArrow Museum was enough to make lovers of antique automobiles cry for joy. The museum, which is large and planning to get larger, also has antique bikes and motorcycles, all in seemingly shiny new condition. And it even houses a filling station designed by

It was an eight-hour drive from Bridgeport, where the ferry docked, to Buffalo, and that does not count the stops. The roads are excellent, the roadside trees just beginning to suggest autumnal colors, and we spent one night on the way up in Canandaigua, about an hour and a half from Buffalo.

In the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes region, the area is deservedly famous for its Riesling wines, which I confess to having tasted. The village, its name derived from the Seneca tribe, was the scene of the Susan B. Anthony trial in which she was accused of voting illegally in 1873, since women were not then allowed to vote. She was found guilty and fined $100 with costs, which she did not pay.

Colleagues were surprised that we drove to Buffalo rather than just flying there, but I remembered from a previous trip many years ago, when I was a high school student, that the Mohawk Valley and upper New York state are truly lovely destinations. This trip confirmed that memory.
