The walk begins on Limroc Lane in East Setauket (west of the East Setauket post office) and ends in Port Jefferson Station one block south of the Open Door Exchange, located at 200 Wilson St. The trail is 3.5 miles long (7 miles both ways). 9/11 commemorated in Setauket with pomp and flair

11 terrorist attacks, Setauket Fire District held a commemoration ceremony at Setauket Fire Department’s Nicolls Road firehouse.

Firefighters from Setauket and Stony Brook fire departments, as well as several local politicians, placed wreaths. Candles were lit by those assembled in memory of the victims, including the first responders who gave their lives in the attempt to save others.

A community effort was launched after 9/11 to create a memorial site, with many local groups and individuals participating.

The memorial was formally dedicated Sept. 11, 2004. It consisted of pieces of steel from the twin towers, an American flag sculpture made from salvaged steel, a waterfall and fountains In the years since, the site has been expanded and improved; lighting was added in 2008.

In 2011, on the 10th anniversary, a new section including a large granite monument was opened. Engraved on its base are the names of all the victims of the at-

tack, and on two tall pillars representing the towers, the names of all the first responders lost that day, listed by agency, are engraved.

A walkway of brick pavers engraved with personal messages was added, purchased by donations from individuals and groups. Pavers are again being offered, said Setauket Fire District Manager David Sterne.

This year’s additions were two saplings propagated from the Survivor Tree, according to Sterne.

from the World Trade Center took some damage when the towers went down, but remained alive.

It was nurtured back to health, Sterne said, and is evidence of the resiliency of the country. “We were lucky — we got two of them,” he added. “We planted them and they’re thriving.”

This new area of the park, which also includes a stone bench, is dedicated to Commissioner James Hubbard, who worked helping to clear the rubble. “He was a victim, just like anybody else,” Sterne said.

Shopping and fun in the sun, Gallery North was the place to be For more than half a century the Gallery North Outdoor Art Show & Music Festival has been drawing crowds to North Country Road in Setauket. Last weekend was no exception, with a steady stream of visitors on both days.

John Deng received the top honor in the Photography category and also the award for Best in Show.

Local artists Robin Clonts, Flo Kemp, Dawn Mohrmann and Mary Jane Van Zeijts won ribbons as awards or honorable

mention in their respective categories.

Local craftsperson Dana Neger took the top award in the Jewelry Design category.

The more than 100 exhibitors this year included a broader variety of techniques and arts and crafts and painters, according to Gallery North Executive Director Judith Levy.

All in all, Levy said she was pleased with how the weekend went, despite a few glitches. “When we arrived before 6 a.m. on Saturday, strong winds and rain had upturned some of the booths. There was

water everywhere,” she said. “But thanks to Keith Sanford (of Three Village Lawn & Garden) all was put right again.”

In addition to the art, there were live musical performances as well, with chairs available to relax while listening.

A 9/11 tribute and flag raising on Sunday at 1 p.m. was a joint venture with the Three Village Historical Society located across the street. President John Yantz offered remarks, Roberta Fabbiano sang “God Bless America,” local politicians spoke, and

as the crowd sang the national anthem, the flag rose into a clear blue sky on the historical society flagpole. “It was really very moving. I’m glad we did it,” Levy said.

Lots of children visited the gallery’s community art center to create monoprints, and adults decorated wall tiles for the gallery’s ongoing Make Your Mark fundraiser.

Police Blotter Incidents and arrests, Sept. 6-12 Cover up

A 52-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station exposed himself to a passerby while in the parking lot of Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket at about 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9, according to police. He was arrested in Port Jefferson Station and charged with exposure.

Dr. Who?

During a traffic stop Sept. 9 near the corner of Main Street and Perry Street in Port Jefferson at about 8:30 p.m., police discovered a 19-year-old man driving a 2015 Mercedes possessed a prescription drug without a valid prescription, police said. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Bait and switch

On East Broadway in Port Jefferson at about 7 p.m. Sept. 8, a 52-year-old woman from Baiting Hollow who was driving a 2012 Hyundai collided with a 2005 BMW and fled the scene, according to police.

She was arrested Sept. 9 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

The gift that keeps on giving

At Speedway gas station on Route 25A in Miller Place at about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 4, a 21-year-old man from Yaphank stole a gift card, according to police. He was arrested Sept. 8 in Selden and charged with petit larceny.

What a tool

On Aug. 23 at about noon, a 41-year-old man from Patchogue stole a tool kit from Lowe’s Home Improvement on Sunrise Highway in Bayshore, according to police.

He was arrested Sept. 7 in Selden and charged with petit larceny.

No prescription, no drugs

A 25-year-old man from Selden possessed the drug hydrocodone without a prescription while on Middle Country Road in

Setauket at about 3 p.m. Sept. 6, police said. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

How did that get in there?

At about 3:30 a.m. Sept. 6, while at the Suffolk County Police Department 6th Precinct in Selden, a 27-year-old man from Coram had marijuana and a firearm in his 2014 Ford, police said. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Bar fight

A man was punched in the face by another man at Portside Bar & Grill on Main Street in Port Jefferson at about 4 a.m. on Sept. 11, according to police. The victim was treated for injuries at St. Charles Hospital and elected not to press charges, police said.

Driving a hard bargain

A hard drive and a router were stolen from Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket at about 1 p.m. Sept. 11, according to police.

Dent and run

At a home on 18th Street in East Setauket at about 3 p.m. Sept. 8, a parked 2015 Chevrolet was dented, according to police.

Holy theft

The front grill of a 2015 Subaru was stolen while the car was parked outside of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Port Jefferson Station at about 5 p.m. Sept. 10, police said.

Tires roll off

At Port Jefferson Chrysler Jeep Dodge on Nesconset Highway, 20 spare tires that were stored by the dealership inside a 2007 Dodge were stolen at about noon Aug. 20, according to police.

Farming on Long Island has changed significantly over the past 350 years. The early settlers in Brookhaven used horses and oxen, raised cows, pigs and sheep and grew a wide variety of crops including wheat, Indian corn, barley, rye, flax, grasses, apple and pear trees. As wheat and Indian corn were the largest and most important crops, the local gristmill became the vital connection between the farm field and table.

For farmers, the miller and the blacksmith were the vital craftsmen. Brookhaven’s colonial blacksmiths worked in iron to produce farm tools and hardware. They made horseshoes and shod horses, oxen and occasionally cows.

In 1681, John Thompson, Brookhaven’s blacksmith, made all the iron and steel work for a new Setauket gristmill run

by John Wade.

By the end of the 18th century, increased agricultural productivity was becoming vital to Long Island farmers. By enriching the soil with seaweed, shells and manure, Suffolk County farmers increased the yield of each acre of wheat and other grains by two to three times. However, the dominance of wheat in Long Island agriculture was soon to change.

At the start of the 19th century, New York City had a number of tidal gristmills along the East River to grind grain. Grain and flour came from Long Island and as far away as Ohio. Grain from the west, transported by wagon, was more expensive than Long Island grain. This, however, was also soon to change.

With the end of the War of 1812, trade with Europe and Great Britain resumed. Europeans remained willing to pay high prices for American cotton and wheat. Great Britain passed the “Corn Law of 1815,” placing a tax on the import of grains. This was to keep the price of grains up and preserve the profits of the “landed gentry” (the British noblemen who owned most of the land).

In 1812 the United States exported 1.3 million barrels of flour to Britain. In 1816 that fell to about half (620,000 barrels). Long Island farmers still earned their living by raising grain and herding livestock, as they had since the 17th century. Now they began to have a wider market through New York City.

The Erie Canal forever changed Long Island’s relationship with New York City. Begun in 1817, the Erie Canal was fully completed in 1825 from Buffalo to Albany — a distance of 363 miles — establishing a water commerce route between the Hudson River and the Great Lakes.

The effect of the canal on Long Island and New York City population and commerce was dramatic. By 1826, 42 barges a day carried 1,000 passengers, 221,000 barrels of flour, 435,000 gallons of whiskey and 562,000 bushels of wheat.

Shipping costs from Lake Erie to Manhattan plummeted from $100 a ton to less than $9.00.

By 1830, due largely to the Erie Canal, New York, which had always been behind Philadelphia and Boston in exports, was exporting four times as much as Philadelphia. By 1850, New York’s exports had grown another 160 percent.

On Long Island, wheat, barley, corn and rye proved unable to compete with cereal grains from the West. By 1836, with a population that more than doubled to over 275,000 since 1820 and shipping that tripled over the same period, Long Island farmers, seeing their market disappear, switched to raising potatoes, cabbage, peas, beans, asparagus and tomatoes for booming Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The Emma Cup was established last year as a friendly competition among the five elementary schools in Three Village Central School District. The school with the most kids completing Summer Reading gets its school’s name engraved on the trophy, which is then housed at the winning school until the next summer.

This year the cup was presented at announcement celebration. For the second year Minnesauke Elementary School was the winner. The Emma Cup will again be engraved and the trophy will return to Minnesauke.

In total for all of Three Village 16,267 books were read!

A team of five Ward Melville High School 10th-graders captured first place during a five-day EDNY Justice Institute program at the federal courthouse in Central Islip this summer.

WMHS team takes first place A team of five Ward Melville High School 10th-graders — Kian Abbott, Gabrielle Barry, Thomas DiPietro, Samuel Kim and Kevin Xu — took an up-close look at the justice system and captured top honors this summer during a five-day Eastern District of New York Justice Institute program at the federal courthouse in Central Islip.

During the summer program, the students learned all aspects of law enforcement and legal advocacy by working with experienced lawyers and meeting with U.S. Marshalls and FBI investigators.

The week ended in a challenging mock trial competition during which teams were assigned to represent the defense or prosecution in two cases. The top two teams

competed head-to-head in the final round.

Three Village’s team was awarded first place at the end of the championship round.

“This was a great experience and I learned a lot from my teammates,” said DiPietro. “I really enjoyed competing in the mock trial and talking to the professionals in attendance. By learning more about the career through this experience, I now know that I really want to be a lawyer.”

More than 80 students represented 23 Long Island high schools in the program, spearheaded by U.S. District Judge Joseph Bianco and sponsored by the Eastern District of New York, Touro College and the Federal Bar Association.

oBITUARIeS Elizabeth Galia

Elizabeth “Bette” Galia, 94, of Stony Brook, passed away peacefully at home Aug. 6.

Bette was born Sept. 23, 1921, in Passaic, New Jersey, to Winfield and Frieda Scott.

A jazz lover, at age 15 she transposed music for Benny Goodman.

After graduating from Sewanhaka High School, she worked as a model and fashion illustrator in Manhattan. Bette continued her studies at the American School of Design.

In 1940, Bette married William Connah, and worked at home as an illustrator in the family business for 20 years while raising her family. Widowed in 1961, she worked for Grumman Aircraft as a mem-

ber of the Apollo 11 team. In 1965 she married Joseph Galia. Sharing his great enthusiasm for flying, Bette attained her private pilot’s license at the age of 60.

Bette put love into everything she did and she leaves a legacy of love and grace to all that knew her.

Her husbands William Connah and Joseph Galia and daughter Patricia Detwyler (Robert) predeceased her. She leaves behind daughters Elizabeth McErlean (Richard), Robin Jackson (John) and Suzanne Connah Beffa-Negrini (Duane); sons William Connah and Joseph Galia Jr.; grandchildren Patricia Pore, Robert Detwyler Jr., Richard Mc Erlean Jr., Erin Montgomery, Scott Jackson, Meg Franco, Todd Jackson and Heather Connah;12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A memorial service will be held Sept.

24 at 10 a.m. at St. James R.C. Church in Setauket. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory to www.hospicare.org would be appreciated.

Harry Beaton

Harry Beaton, 83, of South Setauket, died peacefully on Sept. 2, following a long illness.

He was the son of the late Venita and Hector Beaton and the brother of Joan Zipp.

Harry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Beaton, and their six children: Brenda (and Tom), Diana, Alicia (and Tom), Brian, Thomas (and Alisha) and Charles (and Janine).

Loving grandfather of Leah (and Derek), Lindsey, Chris, Ann, Sarah, Robert, Liz, Matt, Sean, Nick, Mary Elisse, Juliana, Lorenzo and Sofia; and great-grandfather of Peyton, Alivia and Owen.

He attended St. Francis Preparatory

School and was the first in his family to attend college. He earned a bachelor’s of science degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and a master’s of science degree from New York University. As an engineer, he worked for IT&T, General Dynamics, Singer, AIL and retired from Grumman in 1993.

He pitched AA baseball for the Elmhurst Eagles and was an avid ballroom dancer, golfer and tennis player. He was deeply committed to family and will always be remembered for his unique combination of intellect, compassion and hard work. His children and grandchildren will remember his unwavering commitment, character and generosity.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket. Services were held at St. James R.C. Church and interment followed at Pinelawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Farmingdale.

A big thank you from the lady with the cane On the evening of Aug. 25 I parked at the Stop&Shop in Setauket on 25A and realized I left my purse at the Neighborhood House. I hurried back there to retrieve my forgotten item.

(Hope their fundraiser for a lad who needed a service dog was a huge success.)

Went back to Stop&Shop.

Getting out of the car, I evidently dropped my keys (lariat). Now some of the lariat was locked inside my car and some outside (under the door). Needless to

say, unavailable for me to obtain. I proceeded to call triple A from my cellphone, but it died. I asked a man passing by if he had a cellphone. He was graciously sympathetic and kind enough to help make the initial call to aid me. (I was sorry to detain him from meeting the ferry.) I know triple A is sometimes very busy, but … 56 or 57 minutes later the truck finally arrived — but by now the drizzle had become a rain. An empathetic woman was kindly able to charge my phone

with her AT&T portable battery charger. (I was even able to receive a call about a friend losing her hat earlier at the beach.)

I still cannot believe how many people offered to help the lady with the cane. Thank you, one and all, for caring and inquiring, but especially the man whom I detained and the woman who cared enough to charge my phone (and her husband, who waited for her, in the rain.)

How united are we?

On the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks on Sept. 11, we reminisce about how on that day, and for so many days that followed, we felt united as a country. A persistent theme when discussing the events is that the aftermath of the attacks brought us closer together as a nation. Our editorial staff would argue that 15 years removed means we still reside in the aftermath, and the legacy of 9/11 is still being written.

If we continue to splinter along party and racial lines, ties that bound us together in a time of horrible tragedy will simply be forgotten.

There was evidence that immediately following the events, we grew closer as a nation. Stories proliferated about long lines of blood donors, American flags flew everywhere — on front porches and cars — people took the time to help one another and civility ruled the day. And as we observed memorial events throughout the past weekend, communities still came together in harmony and with pride.

The initial feelings of solidarity as a reaction to the horrific events were real. However, we would hope that 15 years later, this feeling of unity would continue to apply to more issues.

After visiting classrooms and speaking with teachers, some of whom are now educating children who were born after that day in 2001 or are too young to remember it, the theme of unity struck a chord with them as well.

Our editorial staff wonders how America right now must look to those same students. They can turn on the news and witness divisiveness in an unfathomably ugly election season or see an NFL player being both heavily criticized and highly praised for kneeling during the national anthem. Do we still seem united?

While we feel a sense of togetherness on the anniversary of that day, as we recall the tremendous loss of innocents, or remember those who risked their lives to save others and think of those out there fighting to protect this country, there is still an overwhelming sense that we are growing further and further apart.

Have you ever been on a site looking at shoes and the next thing you know, an advertisement for those same shoes come up on a different site?

The reason this happens is because your Internet Service Provider (ISP) uses browsing history and “cookies” to see what you’re looking at or how long you stay on a certain web page. With this information they can create personalized advertisements, which can seem intrusive and maybe even a little creepy.

So, where exactly does this start to get too personal and what laws and rights do you have that protect you? The answer should concern you.

“There are no FCC rules that bar those companies from selling that information to advertisers,” warned the New York Times in a March 11, 2016, editorial. “A lot of Internet traffic is encrypted and phone and cable companies cannot decipher the data. But

even when data is encrypted, companies can still tell what websites people are visiting. And many websites still do not use encryption.”

TimeWarner, AT&T and other ISPs could be using your information to sell to other companies and, right now, there are no laws stopping it.

Americans need to take a stand and fight for our right to have internet privacy. New rules and regulations are needed to protect us from big companies selling our personal information.

The good news is FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has proposed that internet users should be able to have a say in what ISPs collect and use.

ISPs, of course, aren’t supportive of internet privacy protections because that would mean they can’t obtain information to personally market to you or sell your information.

However, such privacy protections already exist for telephone

services, the New York Times notes. Why should there be less protection online?

The FCC is currently seeking public comments on its proposed regulations, which it will vote on later this year. I believe these changes are in internet users’ best interest. I hope others join me in spreading the word and providing feedback to the FCC. By taking a stand and committing to making the internet a safer, more private place, you are helping protect yourself. By getting educated and learning about your privacy and deciding to not be taken advantage of online, you can help beat the big companies at their own game. Understand your rights online, learn about your privacy on certain sites, and support the new rules and regulations that take place.

In defense of the Clinton Foundation I’ve been listening for weeks to attacks on the evil Clinton Foundation. I want to share my experience with the organization. Sixteen years ago I became involved in opening a home for AIDS-affected children in Meru, Kenya, a town then being ravaged by the AIDS pandemic.

We were able to open the home in 2005 to the first 18 children, three of whom were HIV positive. Since then, the number of children we support has risen to 78. In 2007 I heard a report

on the radio that the Clinton Foundation was spearheading an AIDS initiative in East Africa that would supply life-saving drugs to those afflicted with the disease.

I called the Clinton Foundation offices in Harlem and asked for the name and number of their contact person in Nairobi. I shared this information with my colleague Joseph Kirima, the director of our home in Kenya.

He immediately drove to Nairobi and met with the Foundation representative. We soon began to

receive the AIDS medication free of charge. Our three HIV-positive children, now teenagers, are still with us, and the threat of AIDS has diminished, in part because of the efforts of the AIDS Initiative. I think we need to look at the Clinton Foundation in the larger context of what it has accomplished, instead of viewing it as a campaign issue.

opinion Cheeky distant relatives not keeping their distance

E

xtended family has that wonderful yet terrible ring to it. When we gather with family we may not have seen in years, we get the chance to reminisce, to share details about our lives, and to face the horror of seeing someone who insists on reminding us of something we said or did that we’ve spent years working to forget.

Recently, we gathered with a large group of family and got to watch our children, who are now in middle and high schools,

is one of the more innocuous statements about my son.

“He has your dimples,” another offered, which would be flattering except that I don’t have dimples. That lady insisted, however, that the laugh lines on the sides of my face were like dimples, to which my son and I blinked our long eyelashes, which he did get from me, and moved on.

“The last time I saw you,” one friend started, “you must have been no more than this high,” she suggested, holding her hand around mid-knee level. “Do you remember?”

No, how could he remember? When you’re that small, you barely remember your own name.

Back when I was a kid, older relatives used to approach my cheeks as if they were fruit they had to squeeze to make themselves prune juice.

Between thumb and index finger, they’d grip tightly while spitting into my face something about how cute I’d become. I’d focus on not letting the

tears spill down my sore cheeks as these distant relatives couldn’t keep their distance.

Other people’s kids grow up incredibly quickly because we don’t have to take care of them when they get sick at night, drive them to sports or music practices, or push them to do their homework. We don’t have to battle with them when they decide that everything anyone who is more than 20 years old says is absolute nonsense and that they don’t want to live by anyone else’s rules.

We can look at other people’s children as if they are a part of some longitudinal study or as if we are flipping through the pages of a picture book that spans several years.

When I see some of these children who drift in and out of my life every few years, I’m tempted to tell them stories that wouldn’t interest them, about how incredibly shy they were 10 years earlier, or how their laugh used to be like a bubble machine, filling the

room with happy suds. For the giggling girl who became the taciturn teenager, those stories are as welcome as persistent questions about the boys in her grade or events that occurred during the day in school.

I can’t stop myself from commenting on how much taller the kids are getting, in large part because many of these teenagers, who I used to get on one knee to see eye to eye, are now towering over me. I even made one of them smile when I asked if he wouldn’t mind bending down to hug me.

At this recent gathering, I asked my son to go around the table and name as many of the relatives as he could. The relatives were aghast at my putting him on the spot but, thoroughly enjoying the day, he recognized the request was a playful prank.

No matter what I say to other people’s kids, I make sure I don’t pinch anyone’s cheeks. Even all these years later, I can still see those feral fingers and thumbs coming at me like talons.

It can be fun to speculate.

famous quote, what are some of those other forks in the road?

The first such choice that comes to mind for me is the decision my husband and I made to return to the East Coast. He was ending his stint in the Air Force in Texas, and he had gotten a job offer from the medical center at The University of Oklahoma. We went to look, my husband and I and our then two children. The people were gracious, welcoming and encouraging. The medical school had a position open in the ophthalmology department, and he was thought to be the right fit after his considerable experience taking care of airmen and their families. The school made him what sounded to us, after the military, like a terrific offer. He toured the hospital, we were shown nice areas of Oklahoma City in which we might live, we were taken to dinner at a country club and we met several other young families who were happily settled there. At the end of a lovely weekend, we turned to each other and said “no.”

We were sure that we wanted to settle in San Diego, California. We

had been out to the West Coast during my husband’s vacation weeks, and we loved the area — La Jolla in particular. The city was set in the hills, curved around the harbor, offered a fine academic and cultural existence and had the best climate in the United States. My husband hated the cold weather and thought he had found Shangri-la. I wasn’t so sure about the occasional earthquake tremors that rattled the dishes in the cabinet where we stayed, but I lusted for the ocean after two years in northern Texas. A decision was made: We would move there as soon as he was discharged. He even found a possible associate in a growing practice and we checked out a couple of places to live.

OK, you might ask, how did we wind up on the North Shore of Long Island?

The answer: family. Our children were my parents’ only grandchildren, my parents were our children’s only grandparents, and in those days — the late 1960s — flying between coasts was a big deal involving many hours and changes of planes. And, anyway,

my father hated to fly. Additionally my parents were tied to their business in New York City with no plans to retire.

On the other side, my husband’s three siblings and their families, along with aunts and cousins, were all in the New York area.

We reluctantly yielded to the pull of family and, in a manner of speaking, we left our hearts in San Diego and came east. We then had to decide where in the vicinity of New York we would stay. The choice was between two medical centers that were on the drawing board: Valhalla, in Westchester, and Stony Brook. So how did we wind up here? That is a story for another column.

Would we be different had we settled in La Jolla? Would our children be different? Ironically one of my sons felt the siren song of that beautiful coastal city of San Diego and almost moved there. But the proximity to family, among other considerations, prevailed. Had we taken the other road, we would be the same people with the same values, I trust, but the details of our lives? We will never know.
