New international students have arrived at Stony Brook University. For most it will be their first time in the United States. They have no family or friends here and are in a completely foreign and unfamiliar environment.

The Host Family Program, a community organization, provides a newly arrived international student with the friendship of a local American family. Volunteers run the program with the cooperation of the university.

It is not a home-stay program; students live on or near campus. Host families invite students to share an occasional meal, enjoy some local sightseeing or share a favorite

activity. Both students and host families can enjoy the enriching experience of a cultural exchange and gain a new perspective about the world. A host family may be a retired couple, a family group or a single person.

The only prerequisite is wanting to make an international student feel comfortable in a strange and new setting.

Sunny skies greet Three Village students on first day of school By rita j. egan rita@tbrnewspapers.com Under sunny skies, children filed off buses at Setauket Elementary School Sept.

5 ready to start a new school year. Many children could be seen smiling as they greeted friends and teachers they hadn’t seen all summer, and a few younger students were teary-eyed as they took in their new surroundings.

The air of excitement extended throughout the Three Village Central School District as students anticipated embarking on new adventures.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all my friends who I didn’t see over the summer, and meeting my new teacher,” said Jordyn Zezelic, a fifth-grader at Nassakeag Elementary School.

Allie Konsevitch, a seventh-grader at R.C. Murphy Junior High School, said she was happy about starting her first year at the intermediate school and changing classes.

Sophia Kornreich, an eighth-grader at Murphy who tested out of Spanish I, said she was looking forward to the challenge of Spanish II. “I love Murphy because something about the building is very warm, and it feels like one really big family,” Sophia said.

Her sister Athena, who goes to Nassakeag, said she was excited about starting sixth grade, meeting her new teacher Ms. Safranek and taking part in upcoming activities.

“I’m very eager for the Halloween dance, car wash, buddies [program] and graduation,” Athena said. “I am thrilled to move on to sixth grade.”

A week before the beginning of the school year, the district conducted orientation programs for incoming seventhand 10th-grade students of Ward Melville High School and R.C. Murphy and P.J. Gelinas junior high schools. Students were able to ask questions of administration members and upperclassmen were in attendance to help new students locate their

lockers and classrooms.

Rachael Catalano, a sophomore at Ward Melville, said she is excited about “making

many new friends and seeing the multiple opportunities that the high school has to offer to get involved in.”

Preparing for hurricane season This year, forecasters predict an abovenormal hurricane season in the Atlantic. Hurricanes and tropical storms can cause serious damage to coastal and inland areas, including storm surge, heavy rainfall, coastal and inland flooding, high winds and tornadoes.

To help Long Islanders prepare for these types of storms, U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (RShirley) hosted a seminar with representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, American Red Cross and Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services Aug. 28 at Brookhaven Town Hall to provide information to help residents prepare for, stay safe during and recover from hurricane storm systems. Residents also learned more about how these organizations measure, track and forecast hurricane activity.

“As we are witnessing in Texas with Hurricane Harvey, it is vitally important to be as prepared as possible in the case of a hurricane or tropical storm,” Zeldin said.

“New Yorkers unfortunately know this all too well. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit New York hard and devastated our coastal communities and businesses on Long Island, leaving mass destruction in its wake. The common message among all of the presentations was: Be prepared. The key is to be informed, make a plan, build an emergency kit and get involved.”

Three Village Community Trust requests volunteers The Three Village Community Trust will have a booth at the Gallery North Outdoor Art Show Sept. 9 and 10 and needs volunteers to help at the booth.

Volunteers are asked to invite passing attendees to stop and see the photo display of the trust’s projects, hand out information on its work, point out the painting (pictured right) donated for the raffle at its Annual Celebration and sell raffle tickets.

The trust asks for helpers for two-hour shifts, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 or Sunday Sept. 10. If interested, email normaedf@optonline.net.

the Setauket Fire District’s 9/11 Memorial Park includes a monument with all the victims’ names.

9/11 victims to be remembered locally The Setauket Fire District will hold its annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony Monday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The event will take place at the district’s 9/11 Memorial Park, adjacent to the firehouse located at 394 Nicolls Road in Stony Brook.

All are welcome to join the members of the Setauket and Stony Brook fire districts, local legislators and Boy Scout troops at the event.

The park was described as a “solemn park made by mortals to remember angels” during a speech given by Department Chief William Rohr last year. It features two trees planted in 2016 that were seeded from the 9/11 survivor tree located at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center. The park also includes a stone monument inscribed with the names of those lost on 9/11 and a patriotic water display.

Among those who will be remembered are Thomas Dennis of Setauket, who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald; New York City firefighters Frank Bonomo and John Tipping both from Port Jefferson; Patrick Lyons of Setauket; and New York City firefighter Captain Thomas Moody of Stony Brook.

Events will also be held in Port Jefferson at the Village Center and fire department.

Port Jefferson Fire Department The Port Jefferson Fire Department will host its annual 9/11 memorial ceremony on Monday, Sept. 11, at 9:30 a.m.

At the Maple Place firehouse, firefighters and residents will gather to pay their respects to those who died in the terrorist attacks in 2001, including first responders from the Town of Brookhaven who perished while answering the call of duty at the World Trade Center.

The candlelight remembrance is at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Harborfront Park at the Port Jefferson Village Center located at 101A East Broadway. The Sons of Italy Lodge 3436 was renamed the Vigiano Brothers Lodge to honor Port Jefferson residents.

John Vigiano Jr. was a firefighter and Joseph Vigiano was a police detective. On Sept. 11, 2001, both Vigiano brothers responded to the call to the World Trade Center, and both were killed while saving others. John Vigiano Sr. is a retired New York City firefighter whose two sons followed him into service. The attacks of 9/11 inflicted a tremendous loss on his family. The Sons of Italy honored the two heroes and their family by naming the lodge after them in Port Jefferson.

Incidents and arrests Aug. 29 - Sept. 5 Bag of tricks

A 21-year-old man from East Setauket possessed a backpack containing MDMA, marijuana and a dagger while near the intersection of Route 112 and Cherub Lane in Port Jefferson Station at about 2:30 p.m. Aug. 30, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventhdegree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and fourthdegree criminal possession of a weapon.

Sunshine State fugitive

On Sept. 3, a 28-year-old man from Coram, who was a fugitive from justice from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in Florida related to his dealings with stolen property, was arrested at a business on Main Street in Port Jefferson, according to police.

Crime spree

A 27-year-old man from Port Jefferson stole Redbull energy drink cans from Target on Pond Path in Setauket at about 8:30 p.m. June 16, according to police. He was arrested in Selden Sept. 4, and police discovered he also stole assorted tank tops from Victoria’s Secret in the Smith Haven Mall at about 12:30 p.m. May 17, and later fled the scene from the mall in a 2006 Mazda after colliding with a 2003 Subaru, police said. He was arrested Sept.

4 in Selden and charged with two counts of petit larceny and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

No wonder he ran

At about 5 p.m. Sept. 2, a 31-year-old woman from East Patchogue possessed heroin and a hypodermic needle in her handbag while at the Port Jefferson Long Island Rail Road station, according to police. She also had an active warrant for her arrest issued by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, police said. When police tried to handcuff her, she struggled and twisted, resisting officers’ demands, police said. She was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.

At about noon Sept. 2, a 19-year-old man from Shirley was involved in a car crash while driving a 2016 Jeep on Route 25 near the intersection of Middle Island Road in Shoreham, which resulted in an injury to the other driver, and fled the scene without exchanging information according to police. Police attempted to pull him over later, and he did not stop, police said.

He ultimately was apprehended on foot on Randall Road in Shoreham. Police discovered he had fentanyl, cocaine and marijuana in his possession, all packaged with the intent to sell, police said. He was arrested and charged with third- and seventhdegree criminal possession of a controlled substance, leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A 35-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station was driving a 1999 Chevrolet on Route 25 near the intersection of Dawn Drive in Centereach at about 11 a.m. Aug. 30 when she was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to police. Police discovered she was driving with a license that was presently suspended and had been suspended on at least three prior occasions. She was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Bumper cars

At a shopping center on Portion Road in Farmingville, a 31-year-old man from Ronkonkoma driving a 2010 Honda collided with a parked 2010 Hyundai at about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 20, causing property damage, and fled the scene, according to police. He was arrested Sept. 4 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Someone filled their gas tank at USA Gasoline on Patchogue Road in Port Jefferson Station at about 8 p.m. Sept. 3 and left without paying, according to police.

The window of a home on Pagnotta Drive in Terryville was damaged at about midnight Sept. 4, according to police.

Mailing it in

A mailbox at a home on Pak Court in Setauket was damaged at about 6 p.m. Sept.

4, according to police.

Clean getaway

A Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner was stolen from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in Setauket at about 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3, according to police.

Ambulance hit on Nicolls Road

At about 3:30 p.m. Sept. 5, a Ford Mustang collided with an ambulance on the southbound side of Nicolls Road at South Drive in Stony Brook, resulting in serious injuries for the driver of the Ford, according to Suffolk County Police Department Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers.

The driver of the Ford was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. The incident is currently under investigation and appears to be non-criminal, Meyers said.

About 1,700 miles away several efforts to raise money and accumulate food and supplies for those affected sprung up across the North Shore this past week into the weekend. Setauket

A few days after Hurricane Harvey left devastation behind in its wake in southeastern Texas, a Setauket business owner sat in his office surrounded by boxes and bags of much-needed staples.

Eric Cohen, president of True View Window Cleaning and Power Washing, said he was watching news coverage of the hurricane with his 12-year-old daughter Jamie when she turned to him and said, “That’s not going to happen to us Daddy, right?”

The Port Jeff resident said he started explaining to her there was no need to worry because volunteers would bring the flood victims food and help rebuild their houses. It was then he said he realized he needed to do something.

“I figured she’d grasp it better if I did something than explain it,” Cohen said.

The business owner decided he would collect food, toiletries and clothing, load up a truck and transport them to one of the drop-off centers in Texas. He said this is the first time he has organized a drive like this, but as soon as he made the decision to do so, he posted on social media and called clients. In the days that followed, dozens of people stopped by with donations, and a few of Cohen’s clients have helped store items in their offices.

The organization, which was founded by former Port Jeff resident Jane Parker, features about 40 kids from the local area ranging from 5 to 14 years old who typically meet once a month to fulfill their mission of collecting goods to donate to a homeless shelter in Manhattan. This month their meet up will be the clothing drive.

“It’s a great group of kids who we’re really just teaching how important volunteering is and just trying to inspire them to be altruistic and help other people,” Parker said in a phone interview. She added the group has plans to drive a U-Haul truck to Texas in the coming weeks to deliver the bounty from the clothing drive.

Vincent Paul Conroy Jr., died quietly in his sleep Aug. 22 in a cabin on the St. Marks River in Woodville, Florida. Having been there several years, he had developed a love for the quiet, beautiful area and grew to think of its wildlife as good company, taking delight in observing the manatees, snakes, alligators, deer and bald eagles.

Above all he loved his family which include his sons Cecil Vincent, Evan Edward and Collin Ross, like his father, a member of the U.S. Marines from 2002 to 2006; Collin’s wife Caitlin and their son and Vincent’s first grandchild, Theodore Ronald; Vicky Howard, his former wife and his sons’ mother; her extended family; and his siblings Helen Conroy Del Guercio and her husband Nicholas; Harry Ray Conroy; Frances Conroy and her husband Jan Munroe. He was the son of Vincent Paul Conroy Sr., U.S. Naval Academy ’23, and Ossie Ray Conroy.

He will be remembered for his intellect, enthusiasm, tenaciousness, his big smile, his ability to talk forever and his wonderful bushy eyebrows. Vincent graduated from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, Class of 1967. After his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1971, he served his country first as an officer in the USMC until 1983 and then in his career in the defense industry until his retirement.

A memorial service to celebrate and honor the life of Vincent Paul Conroy Jr. will be held Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. at Grayson United Methodist Church, 555 Grayson Parkway, Grayson, Georgia. Visitation will be from noon to 1:00 p.m. and a luncheon will follow the service at the church. Donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or Children’s Defense Fund in his memory.

Thomas P. Keane

Thomas P. Keane, 72, formerly of Port Jefferson Village and recently of Lillian, Alabama, died Aug. 18.

Thomas was born Feb. 7, 1945, in Port Jeff.

He was the son of the late Thomas J. Keane and Mary T. Keane.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1966 on the USS Cadmus. He was a longstanding member of the IBEW Local 1049 and retired from Asplundh Construction as an electrical lineman.

He is survived by his children Patricia and John Reilly of Middlesex, New Jersey; Shawn Keane, Rosemary and Craig Laucella, and Josephine Pohl all of Sound Beach.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Caitlin and Conor Reilly; Kayleigh Keane; Ashley, Jake, Brooklyn Pohl; Jack, Grace and Hope Laucella; and his three siblings Peggy Smith, Agnes Guggiano and Mickey Keane.

A service was held Aug. 22 at Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Port Jefferson. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Shirley A. Leonard

Shirley A. Leonard, of Port Jefferson died Aug. 1 at the age of 90. She was the beloved wife of William T. Leonard for 43 years.

She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps in 1950 and received training at the Women’s Army Corps Training Center in Fort Lee, Virginia. For a while she trained new recruits before going to teletype school in Fort Gordon, Georgia. She later became a photographer, taking company pictures of soldiers after receiving training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. She gained experience in taking photographs by air despite her fear of flying. Stationed in Tokyo in 1953, she worked in the personnel office. After her service ended, she used the G.I. Bill to go to school. She was a teacher in the Middle Country school district for 27 years, a member of the Wood Carvers Club and active with Port Jefferson Methodist Church.

She will be missed by many.

Services were held at the Bryant Funeral Home Aug. 3. Interment followed in Pawtuxet Memorial Park in Rhode Island.

Gary S. Shumway, 66, of Port Jefferson Station died peacefully Aug. 5 with his loving wife and daughters by his side after a nearly four-year courageous battle with brain cancer.

Gary is the epitome of what every man should aspire to be. He was a devoted husband of almost 45 years to Geralyn; amazing father to Jennifer (Konstantinos) and Alison (Jeffrey); and cherished grandfather to Nicholas, Emma, Ava and Alivia. Gary was born to Harold S. Shumway and the late Janet L. Shumway Nov. 9, 1950. He is also survived by his siblings Gail (Bruce), Cindy (George), Wayne (Teresa), Joan and the late Alan. With an abundance of family and friends, Gary gave and received more love in his lifetime than most people could ever hope for. He was a man dedicated to both his family and his career, which he also loved immensely.

After graduating from Sewanhaka High School, Gary began his 26-year career with New York Telephone. Upon retirement, he embarked on his 24-year career as director of planning at William Collins, AIA Architect.

Town Local physicist, doctors working to help Haitian girl

By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tbrnewspapers.com Through the efforts of a retired physicist, an orthopedic surgeon from Stony Brook University and a dedicated Haitian who has since moved to Long Island, a 16-year-old from Haiti is on a path with more open doors than ever.

Berlinda was born with two clubbed feet, though she is motivated to better herself, with the dream of one day walking on her own two feet. Steve Kramer, a retired Brookhaven National Lab accelerator physicist, met the student in Haiti through Life & Hope Haiti, a nonprofit founded by Haitian-American Lucia Anglade, who built the Eben Ezer School in her hometown of Milot, Haiti.

“She had only been at the school for a few months and she was already learning basic arithmetic,” Kramer said of seeing Berlinda back in March, after meeting her during her introduction to the school in December. “I gave her two columns of work and she handed it back to me with a big smile and said, ‘more.’”

Berlinda has spirit, according to many who have met her, and Kramer was so moved by the story that he reached out to Dr. Wesley Carrion at Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s orthopedics department about performing surgery to fix the girl’s feet. He agreed to do it free of charge.

When he contacted Carrion, Kramer said his secretary Joan mentioned he was deployed in Afghanistan and she didn’t know when he would return. Within a day or two she called to tell him she’d heard from the doctor, who said he’d return by April. In May, the two met.

“I sent him copies of Berlinda’s X-rays and [a] video [of her crawling] and he said he felt he could treat her and rotate the feet, and he would donate his time and get the equipment donated,” Kramer said. “That was a big relief.

I felt it might become a reality.”

Carrion had informed Kramer that he would need to get the hospital to donate some of the costs, so Kramer reached out to the Department of Medicine’s Dr. L. Reuven Pasternak, who serves as vice president for health systems and chief executive officer of Stony Brook University Hospital.

“He said they would cover her hospital costs,” Kramer said after his meeting with Pasternak in July. “This was a bigger relief since beside rotating the club feet we need to check out the status of the hole her spinal column might still have from the spina bifida she was diagnosed as having. Everyone told me the hole doesn’t close up on its own, but she is doing so well that it may have, but it needs to be checked and closed if it is still open.”

To help bring Berlinda to the United States, Kramer set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for her flight cost and other postoperation expenses.

“The fundraising has been going slower than I had hoped, even though everyone I contact is verbally supportive,” he said. “As a physicist my human appeal needs a lot of improvement to really move people to give. But then I look at the video [of her crawling and doing math] and see the determination she has and feel she will deal with it as she has the tragic events she has already endured and I know she will persevere and will learn to walk.”

Following the surgery, Berlinda will be an outpatient for four months, getting her feet rotated to stretch the tendons as part of the healing process. Her legs will be in cages called external frames that will be attached by pins drilled into her leg bones. Because these create open wounds, it’s best for her to stay in the hospital instead of returning to Haiti, to keep the wounds sterile. While recovering, she will continue to go through schooling, which will be one-on-one instead of in a larger classroom back in Haiti.

Without the construction of the Eben Ezer School, Berlinda’s struggles might never have come to light for Kramer. What began as a 10-child school back in 2001 has grown to a population over 400, according to Anglade.

“I took the $7,000 I received from my tax return and decided I wanted to build a school in my home country — that had been my motivation,” said Anglade, who now lives in West Babylon. “I’m so blessed. I thank God for that, say thank you all the time. It’s a big school now, and we’re still helping.”

Anglade first visited Berlinda at her house, and heard from the 16-year-old how her brothers and sisters attended school, and she wished she could join them. Because the school is far from her house, she couldn’t walk there.

“I went to her house and she was quiet, said she can’t go to school,” Anglade said. “I told her I was going to help her, and I took her to the school. I pay someone to stay with her at the school. Her dream is to walk, to learn, to be someone. She wants to be happy.”

Kramer and Stony Brook University Hospital are making her dream a reality.

“Thank God for Steve — he has a good heart and I can’t do it by myself,” Anglade said. “With all my heart, I am so happy. Steve has put in a lot of effort to helping Berlinda make her dream come true.”

Kramer first visited the Eben Ezer School through Wading River’s North Shore United Methodist Church in 2015. He joined a group visiting Haiti in February and has since visited three more times by himself and with Anglade. They are working toward improving the facilities at the school through solar power and updating the water system.

Kramer also provided economic opportunities for students and natives of the town.

He cultivated a group of farmers that grow ancient Egyptian wheat, kumat, which is exported to the U.S. Now, he’s trying to help provide a future for Berlinda.

“She’s very positive, she’s a sponge for learning,” he said. “I just want to help this Haitian girl who has had a tragic life story so far, but has kept her joy of life and has determination to improve herself.”

Amy Miller, of Maine, who has helped Anglade since 2007, said she finds what Kramer is doing admirable.

“I met Berlinda and I really respect his desire to help her move forward,” she said. “You meet someone and they kind of capture your heart, and I think you have to follow your heart. That’s what he’s doing.”

Both said they are also moved by Anglade’s motivation.

“I am tremendously inspired by Lucia,” Miller said. “She’s a force. Lucia is a person that astounds most people that meet her — her energy and her commitment. She loves the kids and it’s wonderful to watch. The community once said she should be their mayor after she

brought water not just for the school but also for the community. She’s quite something.”

Anglade said she’s just doing what she thinks is right, in giving back to her hometown.

“My four kids here go to school, they’re in college, they eat every day, but in Haiti, we don’t have enough to feed over 400 kids, so sometimes when we’re down there for a week or two, we can only feed them for one week,” Anglade said. “I can’t go every week, but if I could go every week, every month, I’d go, just to help them. For me to be able to go down there to help those students, my community, I’m so happy to do it. I really feel good about it.”

Like most Americans, we watched the events in Charlottesville with sadness and dismay. We were deeply disturbed by the violence and death perpetrated by the hatemongers who showed up on the University of Virginia campus with malevolent intent. It was concerning to learn that one of the rally organizers was Chris Cantwell, a self-described white nationalist and former resident of the Three Village area.

As public servants elected to represent northern Brookhaven, we find it crucial to reinforce the values that bind together the neighborhoods we represent. We are proud to be a community that

Helping Houston while Three Village clergy unite against bigotry uniting the nation Across Long Island there’s been a rallying cry from Suffolk County government officials, fire departments, local businesses and residents for donations to support the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and surrounding areas. These outpourings of charitable efforts have helped re-point our society in the right direction after recent events, but it shouldn’t take a national disaster to do so. Two poignant anniversaries on the horizon remind of us of our shared values as Americans, which shouldn’t only arise in times of crisis.

It is not within our ability to control the actions of the Charlottesville protesters or national policies on immigration, but we have the personal power to decide how to respond.

In the wake of the election of President Donald Trump (R) last November, Long Island communities dealt with an increased wave of hate crimes and bullying, which included a hate note found on a Rocky Point student’s desk, and swastikas spray-painted on walls at Northport High School.

This summer, Charlottesville protesters’ messages rippled outward, creating divisions in our local communities between those of different skin colors, religions and sexual preferences. The day after, unity rallies were held in Huntington, Port Jefferson and Three Village areas in response.

Long Islanders have proven time and time again we are stronger united than divided. Next week, on the 16th anniversary of the attacks, we’ll remember how in the months following Sept. 11, 2001, our communities pulled together to give love and support to those families who lost loved ones, and we displayed American flags as patriotic signs of our joint front against terrorism. After Hurricane Sandy, which struck five years ago this fall, we saw residents gather food and make monetary donations to help those whose homes were damaged rebuild their lives.

The momentum of these powerful events can and should be carried forward, especially in the wake of Hurricane Irma now hitting Florida.

These seemingly small but positive actions build a loving and supportive community that we not only can be proud of, but also want to live in.

We encourage you to take a moment to pay it forward with an act of kindness. Reach out and contact one of the groups collecting donations for Hurricane Harvey victims to find out how you can help, attend a 9/11 memorial ceremony to remember those who gave their lives, thank a veteran for their service to our country or help a neighbor with a difficult chore.

If you know someone whose actions have made a positive difference, we’re all ears — and we thank those who are helping to make a difference and save lives.

We are clergy and faith community leaders from several different faith traditions who reside or work in the Three Village area.

We feel compelled to state, very clearly, the following: 1. We stand together — as members of this community, as colleagues and as friends who love and respect one another — to condemn white nationalism and white supremacy in all overt and hidden forms. We do so recognizing that hate groups and ideologies exist not only in other parts of the country but also here on Long Island.

2. Bigotry and hatred in all their forms are a moral and spiritual outrage in each of our traditions. Those who couch their intolerance in religious terms pervert our scriptures and our teachings; in particular, white supremacy peddles a false, secularized version of Christianity. All faiths teach us freedom, responsibility and common humanity — not oppression or hate.

3. People of faith have a responsibility to speak out with conviction, courage and clarity against prejudice and structural racism, and we lament the times we have failed to do so.

4. Those of us who come from predominantly white and Christian congregations have a particular responsibility to counter the voices that prioritize whiteness and Christianity, especially to the exclusion of other peoples and creeds; to lift up and make room in the public

square for voices from other traditions and experiences; and to hold meaningful, honest and even self-critical conversations within our congregations about racial and religious discrimination. This most explicitly includes unconscious bias as well as any deliberate exclusion or systemic barriers that continue to exist.

5. Persistent residential, educational and social segregation on Long Island — a legacy of intentional systemic discrimination dating back hundreds of years — too often creates barriers to real relationships across race, ethnicity and religion. We must commit ourselves urgently to dismantling those barriers and building relationships that bridge our differences. We also must commit ourselves to dismantling the segregation itself.

6. As Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Children’s Defense Fund, said: “We must teach our children the truth about our history,” about “the importance of speaking and standing up nonviolently,” and about “how to respect the sacred lives of every human being.”

7. Our Abrahamic values teach us that the best among us is the most pious and the most just, irrespective of race. We choose to love one another and our neighbors, not only because it’s the clear moral choice over division and hate, not only because it’s the pragmatic choice for bringing our country and our communities together, but also because love is

the central priority and mandate of our faith traditions.

H

ow difficult must it be to become someone else? Somehow, Abby Mueller, an actress who probably isn’t a household name, transforms into the legendary singer Carole King in the Broadway musical “Beautiful.”

It’s a risky proposition. Many of us already know songs like “So Far Away” and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” which means we know what the song should sound like, even if we can’t sing it in tune.

And yet, Mueller, who is clearly the star of a show about anBy Daniel Dunaief other star, pulls it off incredibly well, giving us the energy, the soul, the innocence and the ambition of a remarkable talent.

tening to the show is a transformative experience. Music has that remarkable power, bringing us back to a car when we might have often heard “Up on the Roof” or sending us back in our minds to a dance party where we threw ourselves across the floor of a friend’s house as we invented our own steps to “The Loco-Motion,” where “everybody’s doing a brand new dance, now.”

Even though the dance isn’t so brand new anymore, it feels revived when we watch the high energy action on stage.

My wife and I snuck away before the end of the summer to see the musical, which left us humming and singing the songs through the next day.

The musical itself, like many other Broadway stories, is a collection of dialogue, a loose story and a compilation of rollicking music. The story line follows the musical career of King and her writing partner and husband Gerry Goffin, whom she married when she was 17 and pregnant. The audience feels as if it’s witnessing the birth of

these songs, as Goffin pairs his familiar lyrics to the music King wrote.

The first half of the show, which is considerably longer than the second, is like a collection of musical candy tossed to a hungry audience.

I snuck glances around the room at some of the other people fortunate enough to take a musical joyride and I saw that, like me, several of the guests, who were mostly in their late 40s and older, had smiles plastered on their faces.

The second act doesn’t contain as many songs and delves into the more challenging and sadder parts of King’s life, where she endures the hardship of her husband’s infidelities and the creative tension that sometimes won the battle over his creative talent.

King, as we know, lands on her feet, becoming the legendary composer, singer and songwriter who was inducted with Goffin into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 for their songwriting.

The energy on stage throughout the

show, with performances by a talented team reviving the style and moves of the Shirelles and the Drifters, rival the thrill of watching the cast of “Mamma Mia!” who belted out the familiar Abba songs.

The difference here, however, is that the script is not a plot written to tie together songs, but evolves as the backstory behind the early days of music that long ago circled the United States and the world.

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” definitely lives up to the awards it has won, including the 2015 Grammy for best musical theater album and its two Tony Awards in 2014, which include a well-deserved honor for Mueller.

The only speed bump during this otherwise wonderful ride is the dramatic downshifting in the second act, where the drama, while no doubt true to life, slows the musical momentum.

Still, the conclusion and the experience are rewarding, allowing us to reconnect with the legendary singer’s past, and our own.

subjects spouses most often argue over: managing money, spending family time together or an in-law intruding on their lives. According to an article in The New York Times Science section, “Relationship Problems? Try Getting More Sleep” by Tara Parker-Pope, Sept.

4, the study revealed that some couples argue calmly, even constructively, while others were “hostile and negative.”

The difference? The hostile couples were likely not getting enough sleep, usually less than at least seven hours.

So before you give up on a relationship, consider the sleep factor. With enough sleep, you will still have disagreements, but the tone of the conflicts will probably be more patient.

The Ohio State study goes further.

It purports to measure how marital discord together with sleep deprivation can negatively affect a person’s health.

The way the university measured for this possible toxic effect was by taking blood samples from both members of the couple before and after an argument. The samples measured the level of inflammation in the body because inflammatory proteins have been linked with heart disease, cancer and

other health problems. The results showed that “marital discord is more toxic to your body when you haven’t gotten enough sleep.”

Interestingly, when one member of the couple got adequate sleep, it mitigated the negative tone of the conflict, even if the other member was sleep deprived. So that suggests “a half-a-loaf is better than none” conclusion.

The article goes on to reveal that some 25 percent of couples sleep in separate beds, presumably in order to get more undisturbed rest. “And when one relationship partner doesn’t sleep well, his or her partner is more likely to report poor health and well-being.”

In conclusion: “The lesson, say the study authors, is that before concluding a relationship is in trouble, couples who regularly experience conflict should take stock not only of the relationship and how they are managing conflict, but also of their sleep habits.” The study was published in the May edition of the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, hardly most people’s bedtime reading but offering an article to better understand the universal need in a marriage for adequate sleep.

In addition to all the authoritative information above, I can offer another nugget in the advice for marrieds department. Mine is anecdotal, not academic. Disagreements don’t go well if one or both members of a couple are hungry. Hunger starts out as insidious rather than full blown, and so it is often hard to identify the mood change when in the midst of a difficult discussion or even in an idyllic setting. But hunger can forcibly affect one’s outlook and certainly one’s patience.

I found this to be particularly true with my husband. (I’m not making a gender specific allegation here, just sayin’.) We could be having a perfectly lovely time at the zoo or some other outing, and for no apparent reason, he would begin to get cranky. The level of his crankiness would rise as we continued to stroll. Fortunately I eventually figured it out and began to carry protein bars in my pocket. At the right moment, I would pull two out and offer him one. Within merely a couple of minutes, all was again right with the world.

Patriots edge Rocky Point with nonleague shoot-out win

By Bill landon Shenendehowa has given the Ward Melville field hockey team a run for its money the last two seasons — outscoring the Patriots by one goal in the state semifinals last season and in double overtime in the state finals the year before. But this season, the Rocky Point field hockey team was first to press its luck with Ward Melville, forcing a shoot-out that the Patriots pulled away perfect from, 3-0, for the first win of the season, 3-2.

Melville head coach Shannon Sioss said of its nonleague opponent. “In fact, we like to schedule our nonleagues to be competitive games — it helps us see where our weaknesses are and what we need to work on.”

Rocky Point was first to find the back of the cage when senior midfielder Madison Sanchez dished the ball to senior forward Emily Molinaro.

The Patriots had to shake off the cobwebs when they found themselves battling a scrappy, in-your-face Eagles squad that caused several turnovers. Ward Melville senior forward Kerri Thornton was first to break the ice. She evened the score for the Patriots with four minutes left until the halftime break, and rocked the back of the box on another solo with nine minutes left in the game for Ward Melville’s first lead.

“We have a really experienced senior class and they’ve been down this road the last couple of years, so they’re on a mission right now,” Sioss said. “I thought that Shannon Coughlan held the middle of our field today and Kerri Thornton is always up for a good challenge, so it’s fun to watch her play.”

Thornton said her team took the game very seriously, knowing Rocky Point’s pedigree.

“I knew that Rocky Point was going to be good because they always battle with Miller Place in the county final,” the senior said. “So I wasn’t coming into this game thinking ‘Oh, we’re going to win [this game easily].’”

Ward Melville drew a costly yellow card that led to Rocky Point defender Elizabeth Weiner scoring on a penalty shot to tie the game with four minutes remaining.

“We were right in this game and we deserved to be in this game,” said Rocky Point head coach Katie Bittner. “In the beginning we dominated, we scored first, and I think Ward Melville woke up a little bit, but we also got a little tired.”

Despite being a player down in the final minute of regulation, the Eagles held their own until the clock expired. Ward Melville, still a man up, tried to take home the win in sudden death overtime, but the Eagles returned to full strength two minutes in without Ward Melville getting a shot off. Rocky Point went down a player yet again in the final four minutes, but neither team could score.

“I don’t think that they played bad or that we got lucky — I honestly think that we were the better team,” Bittner said. “We made some mental mistakes that put us a man down, but when the field is this big, it’s huge that we held our own with our five field players to their six.”

Then came the best-of-five shootout, where Thornton and seniors Lexi Reinhardt and Kate Mulham helped Ward Melville to the 3-0 win, while goalkeeper Meghan Lorenzen guarded the Patriots’ cage to keep Rocky Point off the board.

Ward Melville will host Riverhead Sept. 6 at 4:15 p.m. Rocky Point opens its league season at home Sept. 7, hosting Sayville at 4 p.m.

Despite the loss, Bittner has realistic goals for her team this year.

“I’m not looking for an undefeated season by any means, I’m looking to get us to where [Ward Melville] got last year, which is a state championship,” she said. “And with this group, I know they can do it. This was truly a learning experience.”
