By TALIA AMoroSANo Two major medical institutions have agreed to team up, and the partnership could lead to big scientific breakthroughs.

In order to create more academic research opportunities and streamline and expand clinical care initiatives, Stony Brook Medicine and Mount Sinai Health Sys-

tem have entered into a comprehensive affiliation agreement. The change will promote interinstitution collaboration encompassing all five of Stony Brook’s Health Science schools, Stony Brook University Hospital, all 25 academic departments of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Health System facilities and Medical School, and

the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, inclusive of seven hospitals and an expanding ambulatory network.

Facilitators of the partnership believe that the expansion of clinical trials and research opportunities for both institutions will prompt research and studies that could lead to major discoveries, especially in the treatment and

understanding of disease.

Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, senior vice president for Health Sciences at Stony Brook University, noted that the alliance will make use of the strengths of each individual institution.

“What we both get out of the affiliation is enhanced possibilities for science and education,”

Natural gas brings a neighborhood together

BY DONNA NEWMAN Sometimes all that’s necessary for progress to occur is for one or two people to say, “Wouldn’t it be great?”

Lee and Joe Munch of Poquott decided two-and-a-half years ago that it would be nice to be able to heat their home with natural gas.

The problem was, there was no gas main on their street.

The Munches decided to survey their neighbors to see if anyone else shared the thought that it would be a good idea, because according to the National Grid website, the benefits of natural gas are that it’s an easy, convenient and cost-effective way to heat a home.

The website also lists the following “pros”: when electric power goes out, it can power a generator that can automatically take your home off the grid and provide electricity until power is restored; gas is delivered to your home via an underground main, making it as effortless to obtain as water.

The couple put together a flyer and left it in mailboxes along the road, and many neighbors indicated an interest in finding out more.

The wheels began to turn.

The Munches found that they needed to guarantee a certain number of houses would connect to the gas if a main were installed, which was frustrating, according to wife Lee Munch. The people the Munches needed to speak to at National Grid kept changing, and each time it was as if they were starting all over again.

An initial meeting was held with those interested on their block in the Munches kitchen, and as time passed the project became a real “neighborhood thing,” the wife said.

Eventually, the neighbors were able to achieve a kind of “economy of scale” by grouping together. Individual households had made inquiries in the past, but they were quoted “crazy prices” for hooking up, Munch said. Eventually, 20 out of 25 homeowners surveyed opted in, and then National Grid began seriously evaluating the job.

Engineers did a street survey to assess the feasibility of installing the main. Poquott Village Clerk Joe Newfield said National Grid filed permits with the village, and each individual homeowner came in for a building permit to convert to gas.

tween October and December of last year. In late spring, the project finally got off the ground.

The installation included approximately 2,300 feet of gas main, according to Wendy Ladd, a spokesperson for National Grid, and 19 homes, mostly along Van Brunt Manor Road and Tinker Lane, have been or will be connected once equipment has been selected.

National Grid provides the gas line to the house, and the homeowner is responsible for having a plumber install new heating equipment. Two of the homeowners decided to connect to the gas line for non-heating purposes.

The installation went smoothly, Munch said, adding that the street is not in a high traffic area and, as work progressed, traffic was generally well managed by the crew.

In the 30 months between inception of the idea and completion of the main, one neighbor invested in solar panels and another moved away. The Munches are currently without a stove, as their electric range died; they are looking to replace it with a model that runs on natural gas. Last week, a neighbor reported that their oil had run out. Also, many of the homes had

“I’m so happy,” Munch said.

John Tsunis takes Gold Coast Bank public in eight years

By Wenhao Ma In little more than eight years, John Tsunis’ Gold Coast Bank has gone from one location in Islandia to a publiclytraded company with six branches on Long Island, and another opening in downtown Brooklyn.

Now he’s contemplating the bank’s first branch in Manhattan, because many of the customers and stockholders on Long Island are also residents of New York City.

“I don’t want to build a wall between us and New York City,” Tsunis said.

Tsunis, 65, has multiple business interests. He is not only the chairman and chief executive officer of Gold Coast Bank, but is also on the board of directors of the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association, and the founder and CEO of Islandiabased Long Island Hotels. He opened the first Holiday Inn Express franchise on Long Island in Stony Brook in 1991, which was the first in the United States.

According to Gold Coast Bank’s 2016 second quarter report, its net income reached $573,000, a 178 percent increase compared to the same quarter last year. Its assets, deposits and loans have all increased compared to 2015.

The bank also reported year-to-date net income of $991,000.

Gold Coast Bank went public in June, issuing about $9.5 million in shares.

“We are encouraged by our original investors who continue to support our community bank, as well as new investors who have come aboard,” Tsunis said in a statement.

After his first bank, Long Island Commercial Bank, was taken over by New York Community Bancorp in 2005, many clients felt the new, larger bank no longer offered a personal touch. So Tsunis created Gold Coast Bank.

“We used the same model [as we did for Long Island Commercial Bank], almost like a private bank, where we could meet with our neighbors and help them,” Tsunis said. “The bank has a tremendous opportunity to help the development of the growth and the success of the neighbors in our community.”

He said Gold Coast Bank reinvests clients’ deposits right into the community where they are located.

“You deposit money here and we don’t send it to Europe, China or South America like a multinational bank,” he said.

Tsunis remembers when he and his bank helped a Stony Brook restaurant that had trouble funding an expansion.

“That’s not a big enough fish for them,” he said, explaining why the big banks wouldn’t lend money to the restaurant. “For small banks like ours that are in our community, every fish is a big fish.”

Andrew Polan, president of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce, said that Tsunis, who is a very active board member in the chamber, likes to get the community involved, recalling that two years ago Tsunis spent $1,000 on tickets to a barbecue at West Meadow Beach, and gave them out free to guests at the Holiday Inn Express.

“Currently, he wants to get all parts of our community, including the faculty, staff and maybe students of our great Stony Brook and Three Village community together to do a huge New Year’s celebration — maybe centered at the new sports arena on campus,” Polan said.

Cris Damianos, vice chairman of the bank, said that Tsunis is a charitable person and a big donor to charitable organizations, adding that he understands doing business is not a one-way street.

To help the community, Damianos said that the bank lends money not only to businesses, but to religious institutions as well.

Tsunis said he believes that his and the bank’s efforts to help the community will pay off.

“I think if we germinate those seeds, those young students, the residents of the New York metropolitan area and international students as well, will help this economy, this county, this state and country to be a better place to live,” he said.

A 23-year-old woman from Medford and a 30-year-old man from Setauket were loitering in the parking lot of a shopping center on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station at about 1:30 p.m. Aug. 14, police said. The woman had a crack glass pipe in her hand, and the man possessed marijuana, according to officers. Both were arrested and charged with loitering for the purpose of using a controlled substance.

The man was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

At John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson Aug. 14, a 30-year-old man punched a police officer in the face, refused to put his hands behind his back and kicked his legs and feet while being

arrested, police said. He was charged with second-degree harassment and resisting arrest.

Rails to Trails from PJ to Wading River

Officials hopeful for 2018 completion

By Desirée KeegAn It has been more than 30 years in the making, but by 2018, cyclists in the Town of Brookhaven may finally have a new 10mile route to ride from Port Jefferson to Wading River.

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to preserve land strictly for recreation and transportation, proposed to use old North Shore railroad track locations and pave the way, literally, for a bike path.

Marty Buchman, who lives in Stony Brook and opened the new Stony Brookside Bed & Bike Inn, has been a member of Rails to Trails for 20 years and has been cycling for over 40.

“It means everything for us cyclists,” Buchman said of the project. “There is no joy like riding on a bicycle trail.

The trail will bring economic development, health [benefits], jobs — I can’t understand why it took so long to get this started, but I’m absolutely overjoyed. I can’t wait. I’ll be here the first day.”

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai), U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (R-NY), Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro (R) all helped give the proposal life, advocating for the project over the years in an effort to secure funding.

According to Zeldin, converting the rails into a bike trail had been discussed in 2001 when North Shore advocate Mike Cosel spoke to then-legislator Martin Healy about the idea, which has long been stalled since then. Though the project’s roots date back much further than that. The previous allocated funding for the project sat for over five years, and was in danger of being repurposed, so local officials worked over the past 19 months across party lines to restore the funding so the project could move forward.

“Living on Long Island we are blessed with so many natural treasures, including our renowned parks and beaches, many of which are connected through our scenic biking and hiking trails,” Zeldin said. “Long Island’s trails are an important part of our local community and economy, connecting our residents and visitors to our beaches, parks, local farms, festivals, wineries, restaurants and other destinations.”

The $9.51 million project, according to the congressman, will be 80 percent federally funded, with Brookhaven Town covering the remaining 20 percent.

“We’re going to make this something that people can enjoy,” Romaine said. “This will be a great addition to what we have to offer for recreation in the Town of Brookhaven.”

For experienced cyclists, skateboarders, walkers or even first-time riders, safety was a main concern in approving the trails.

“Unfortunately Suffolk has the dubious honor of having the highest fatality rates of cyclists on the road,” said Robert DeVito, president of the Suffolk Bicycle Riders Association and director of the Nassau-Suffolk Bicycle Coalition.

“We constantly go out riding, whether in a group or alone, always concerned [about safety]. With people today utilizing their phones more and more in their car, it’s really become an issue. We need safer areas to ride.”

The project will also provide an economic boost, as shops could set up along the trail. Anker said the goal is to create ecotourism where along the trail, community members and visitors can stop at the various hamlets, whether it be just to buy a bottle of water, to sit and eat dinner or even visit the Tesla Science Center.

According to Ashley Hunt-Martorano, director of marketing and events for Citizens’ Climate Lobby, a non-profit organization focused on national policies to address climate change, it will also help create a safer place for cyclists to travel during ozone days, when county or state officials determine it’s not safe for bike riders to be out.

Although there’s still more time to wait and see if the plan will come to fruition, for now, many locals are excited to hear there may be a plan in place.

Pages graduate summer program Twenty-three students are headed back to school this fall with a unique conversation starter after participating in the 2016 Suffolk County Legislature Page Program.

Now in its second year, this summer’s page program drew students from a variety of schools and majors, culminating in a graduation ceremony Aug. 5. Over the course of 11 weeks this summer, pages got a behindthe-scenes look at the inner workings of local government by working in legislative offices, visiting various county departments and participating in the legislative process.

“These pages were a bright, enthusiastic bunch who brought a lot of character to the Legislature this summer,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville). “Each of the pages brought something special to the table, and, just as it is in real politics, they had different ideas and interests but worked together

to find common ground and ultimately, success. Suffolk County is lucky to have such innovative young leaders. We wish them well in their future endeavors.”

“I’m very proud of all the hard work the pages have done this year,” said Minority Leader and 14th District Legislator Kevin McCaffrey (R-Lindenhurst). “They are a very smart, hard-working and determined group of young leaders who are going to make great strides wherever they go in this world.”

Among the graduates was Setauket resident, Thomas Harrison, a student at Stony Brook University.

In addition, the program included two senior pages who returned to the Legislature for a second year to serve as organizers for this summer’s pages. George Basile of Setauket, a student at Temple University, was one of the “seniors.”

oBITUARY Louise G. Gibson

Louise G. Gibson, 94, a resident of Stony Brook since 1964, passed away peacefully Aug. 6. Born June 28, 1922, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late George W. Gayle and Katherine Young Gayle.

She was married for 58 years to Wilfred A. Gibson, who passed away in 2004.

Louise was a graduate of Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. She worked as a secretary and later taught business subjects for many years at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket.

Her greatest joy was her family. She especially cherished visits with her children and grandchildren. She was also blessed with caring friends and wonderful neighbors.

An avid gardener, Louise had a lifelong love of native plants. She was interested in

genealogy and became adept at using her computer to find information and keep in touch with far-flung acquaintances.

Her other interests included antiques, environmental conservation and natural health. She belonged to the Stony Brook Community Church (United Methodist).

Survivors include three daughters, Susan (Michael) Mikos of Shorewood, Wisconsin; Pamela (Edward) Kriss of Big Canoe, Georgia; and Robin Gibson of State College, Pennsylvania; a son, Brian (Lisa) of Swansboro, North Carolina; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff of Jefferson’s Ferry for their compassionate care.

Three Village Central School District student David McAleese, who is attending Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, was recently awarded a $125 Barry Tech Career and Technical Education Achievement Award for exceptional performance in his chosen filed of study, active participation in school activities and community service and service to his peers as a positive role model.

The award was presented at the 2016 Barry Tech Scholarship Luncheon, held at the Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center.

McAleese also received a $150 SkillsUSA Scholarship for taking first place in Entre-

preneurship at the 2015 SkillsUSA National Competition. It was his work in computer game design and programming skills that earned him this award.

“These students have gone above and beyond their academics to demonstrate a genuine passion and commitment to their fields,” said Barry Tech Principal Laurie Harris when speaking about students in the program. “Part of the Nassau BOCES mission is to enable students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. “It’s a great feeling,” Alex Eletto said of being able to overcome his disability to excel in the sport he cares so much about.

Eletto is now preparing for his next venture, as he begins an internship at a nursing home in Medford, working behind the scenes.

“He loves running races,” his mother said. “He’s definitely an athlete, and he’s very into staying in shape and eating correctly. He just has such a great passion for the sport.”

He emphasized the new potential for patients to easily seek services from either hospital. In fact, joint research programs ranging from fields of biomedical engineering and computer science to medicinal chemistry science, neurology, psychiatry, therapeutics and more are currently in the works.

In terms of education, university students will now be afforded the unique opportunity to take classes offered on either or both cam-

puses, and participate in a variety of summer programs geared toward students of all ages. The two schools plan to facilitate joint graduate and medical educational programs in a wider range of subjects than ever before, and have agreed to invest a collaborative $500,000 for the development of academically challenging pilot programs to be supervised by a joint committee.

“The joint pilots in research have immense promise to advance health at the most exciting time in the biomedical sciences, including advanced computational, bioinformatic and engineering approaches,” said Lina Obeid, M.D., dean for research and vice dean for scientific affairs at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “Stony Brook Medicine and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai are two powerhouses of research that when partnered will definitely yield more than just the sum of their parts.”

Other leaders of each institution have already expressed similar enthusiasm about the affiliation, which was effective immediately upon signing, and many have verbalized hopes that groundbreaking research will take place as a result of this strategic partnership.

Dr. Kenneth L. Davis, president and chief executive officer of the Mount Sinai Health System, said, “Together [Mount Sinai and Stony Brook] will use our outstanding resources to create changes in medicine.”

“Each institution has so much to of-

fer,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. “This is an opportunity that will prove to be beneficial to all— now and in the future—as we explore and grow this incredible collaboration.”

Looking toward the future, Kaushansky said that Stony Brook has more affiliation agreements in the works, contingent upon state approval.

“We are working very hard with our friends in the state of New York to get approval for affiliation with Southampton Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport,” he said.

Also pending is a potential partnership with John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. “In April, Mather Hospital asked a number of health care systems — us included — whether they were interested in affiliating with Mather Hospital, and we said yes,” Kaushansky said. “We made a proposal to the Mather hospital board … and they were supposed to decide [with whom they wish to affiliate] back in June.”

They are still waiting.

About a year ago, Kaushansky said he wondered aloud how it is that the institution could make a bigger impact on clinical medicine, education and research. He now expresses confidence that Stony Brook’s affiliation with a large, city medical center, Mount Sinai, and future mutuallybeneficial partnerships with Long Island hospitals and medical centers is the most surefire way to achieve such an impact.

Parking for vets Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore (R-Ronkonkoma) got a pleasant surprise while running an errand. As he approached Suffolk Federal Credit Union on Horseblock Road in Medford, he noticed a sign designating the parking space for veterans only. Muratore introduced a bill earlier this year, adopted as Local Law 21, “to provide designated parking for veterans at county facilities.”

“Suffolk has the largest population of veterans in New York,” Muratore said, “I’d like to thank the credit union, a private company that took initiative on their own.”

HISTORY CLOSE AT HAND

History is being made at Rio 2016 Olympic sailing races

By Beverly C. Tyler Beverly Tyler, historian, is taking a break this week, so that Beverly Tyler, avid sailor, can have his say. Tyler has sailing in his DNA and can trace it back more than four generations.

Serving in the U.S. Navy as a quartermaster, he was on active duty from 1957 to 1960 on the aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt. He’s been a member of the Old Field Point Power Squadron for 55 years, and served as squadron commander in 1972. He’s been sailing and building small boats since he was a child. This week he puts local history aside to focus on Olympic history as it’s being made.

OK, all you sailors and sailing enthusiasts, as well as Olympic competition enthusiasts, don’t overlook the Olympic sailing events. Unfortunately, sailing, along with archery and other interesting sports, are completely ignored when it comes to television coverage. Fortunately, websites like www.Sail-World.com and www.sailing.org give plenty of coverage and lots of links to videos, photographs and other sailing sites.

As we come to the last weekend of Olympic coverage, sailing competition is scheduled to be over today. The medal races for sailing were scheduled to end Aug. 14. However, there have been weather delays.

The classes of sailboats for the Olympics are: 470, 49er, 49erFX, Finn, RS:X, La-

ser, Laser Radial and Nacra 17. There are 380 sailors from 66 nations who race in 274 boats across ten Olympic Events, and seven racing areas in Rio de Janeiro. On the World Sailing website, you will find many interesting details about each class of boat as well as biographies about each of the Olympic sailors.

If you think that sailing is not exciting, well you haven’t seen sailing races — or sailed for fun lately. In an interview on the World Sailing website, Joao Rodrigues, an Olympic sailor from Portugal who is competing in his seventh Olympics, commented that the windsurfers (RS-X class) “go about 17 knots upwind and almost 30 knots downwind.” The Olympic class Nacra 17 catamarans can go much faster. When you combine brisk breezes with choppy conditions, it makes for some interesting and challenging racing.

American men and women are competing in all eight classes. As I write this, World Sailing is reporting that Americans Annie Haeger and Briana Provancha, sailing in 470s, were in second place with four races to go.

New trail will benefit, unite and celebrate North Shore Every project has its perks, and in the case of one large North Shore endeavor, the possibilities are endless.

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), along with other local officials, recently announced a 2018 completion year for the Port Jefferson Station to Wading River Rails to Trails project — that has been more than 30 years in the making. With the plan, which involves paving a bike path where old railways existed to be used for cyclists, potential is everywhere.

While the project will provide a safe space for biking enthusiasts, skateboarders, roller-bladers and even those just looking to take a scenic stroll, there is also a huge chance for economic growth, with the path connecting so many Town of Brookhaven hamlets. Bikers, hikers and anyone in-between could stop at kiosks along the path to grab a bottle of water or an ice cream cone, or groups may stop in any hamlet along their travels to grab dinner or go shopping. The trail could also be a way to connect locals, and tourists too, to local beaches, museums and other landmarks.

It’s also just a great opportunity to explore the wonders of the North Shore. The plan helps preserve even more open space while stringing together breathtaking views that tend to get lost in all of the development on Long Island.

Further, the trails should serve as inspiration for cars to be left at home occasionally, which can only have a positive impact on the environment around us.

This project is attractive on multiple levels and across multiple layers of government. We applaud officials for being able to work together and across party lines to achieve a common goal with so many benefits.

John McCain, Naval Academy graduate and naval aviator, was, at 31 years old, shot down over Hanoi in 1967, captured and brutally tortured for six years by the North Vietnamese. Refusing early release, he endured unbearable physical and psychological pain until all American POWs were released. He was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star and Prisoner of War Medal.

Army Capt. Humayun Saqib Muazzam Khan, born in the United Arab Emirates, immigrated to the United States at age 2. He enlisted in the United States Army and, while serving in Iraq, was killed in the line of duty in 2004 (one of 14 American Muslim soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice), after a vehicle containing an improvised explosive device, which he tried to signal to stop as he ordered soldiers to hit the ground, drove into the gate of his compound in Baghdad. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump avoided military service (he was “not a big fan of Vietnam”) by securing four college deferments and, despite being a baseball, tennis and squash star, received a medical deferment for bone spurs, which he characterized as minor and temporary. In a 1997 interview with Howard Stern, Trump equated his ability to avoid contracting sexually transmitted diseases while “sleeping around” to be his own “personal Vietnam,” stating “I feel like a great and very brave soldier.” He was awarded no

medals for his “bravery” navigating the nightclubs and bedrooms of Manhattan.

In recent days, upon receiving Lt. Col. Louis Dorfman’s Purple Heart, Trump once again demonstrated his lack of respect and appreciation of the term sacrifice by stating “I always wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much easier” than earning one himself.

Trump has had a great deal to say about these two American heroes.

Of McCain, Trump opined: “He is not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured,” during a family leadership summit in Iowa. Earlier, Trump characterized McCain as a “dummy” due to his class rank upon graduating from the Naval Academy.

More recently, the Gold Star parents of Capt. Khan criticized Trump for continually besmirching the character of, and calling for a total ban of, Muslims entering the United States. The parents noted that if Trump’s policies had been in effect, their son would never have been in America (and would never have saved the lives of his fellow soldiers).

During the Democratic National Convention Khan’s father, Khizr Kahn, said to Trump, “You have sacrificed nothing and no one,” and questioned whether Trump had “even read the United States Constitution.” While no one questions Trump’s right to defend his past and policies, he overstepped all bounds of decency by attacking these parents, who gave their son in defense of

their country.

As to the grieving mother overcome with emotion, Trump ignorantly suggested that because she was a Muslim woman, she was forbidden from speaking.

He then stated that the father had “no right” to criticize him (demonstrating Trump has, indeed, not read the Constitution, especially the First Amendment’s freedom of speech provision).

Most egregiously, Trump likened his building of a real estate empire and amassing a massive fortune to a parent’s loss of a child in the service of the nation, saying he too had sacrificed. “I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures,” he said.

“I’ve had tremendous success. I think I’ve done a lot.”

Two men of honor made unimaginable sacrifices for their nation, and Trump made vile and hurtful remarks, which were strongly condemned by the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization: “Election year or not, the VFW will not tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her freedom of speech,” said Brian Duffy, of Louisville, Ky., who was elected July 27 to lead the nation’s oldest and largest major war veterans organization. In demanding an apology, 11 Gold Star families penned a letter about what should be clear to Trump: “Ours is a sacrifice you will never know.

Ours is a sacrifice we would never want you to know.”

e have spent the better part of the last two weeks glued to the television watching extraordinary people perform incredible acts under unimaginable pressure. Maybe we should come up with an Olympic Games for the ordinary person.

To enter these games, contestants will have to go through a speed round of sports clichés, to see who can come up with the most trite phrases for any circumstance.

We can add a contest for wouldbe reporters. Ordinary people can sit down with athletes and see who can ask either the most inane questions or share superlatives.

“You just won your 18th Olympic gold medal. What’s next? Oh, right, your 19th?”

“That was sensational, spectacular and unbelievable. I’m just wondering what it must be like to be you.”

How about a remote-control Olympics? Let’s see who can change from channel to channel — without switching to movie stations — the longest without hitting a commercial. I pride myself on my ability to watch three shows without seeing too many advertisements, but every so often I flip from one station that’s cut to a commercial to another that’s still in commercial.

That’s a remote control error.

How about if we put teenagers in a room and push their endurance? We can have their parents talking to them while they are sending texts, updating their Instagram accounts and using Snapchat. In fact, not only will their

parents be talking to them, but they also will have to answer questions about their days. The first one-word answer — “good” for example — disqualifies the contestant.

Teenagers might want to turn that contest around, requiring instead that they only answer in one syllable. The problem with that, though, is that the game might not end until they hit their 20s.

We could also bring in couples who have been together for more than 40 years. We can ask a question and see how long it takes before they finish each other’s sentences. Or, perhaps, we can ask them to tell a story about something that happened early in their relationship and see how long it takes before they argue about the details.

“No, I wasn’t wearing the blue dress.

I was wearing the green dress and we weren’t in Philadelphia, we were in Boston; and we weren’t at a park, we were at a movie theater.”

We can invite a group of people who have made an art form out of noticing absolutely everything wrong with others around them. A person can stroll by

We could also set up a movie competition, where people quote the most lines from sports movies.

Borrowing from one of my favorite films, “Bull Durham”: “You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out of the dugout. You know what that makes you? Larry!”

“Lollygaggers!”

This 19th-century word has various meanings, including fooling around, wasting time, dawdling or dallying.

Yes, there’s exceptional speed and there are talented people pushing themselves to extreme levels to defy gravity, each other and the clock.

And then there are the rest of us and maybe, just maybe, there’s the Lollygagger Olympics.

ach night, throughout this long stretch of intense heat and high humidity, we have been praying to the air-conditioning gods to stay strong and continue to keep us comfortable.

Last Friday night I must have forgotten, in my euphoria at the start of the weekend, to say my prayers because Saturday afternoon there was a waterfall coming through the ceiling in one of our offices.

I was at home, sitting in my favorite living room chair, reading the sections of the Sunday Times that we somehow get delivered on Saturday morning.

The dog lay beside me, snoring slightly, enjoying the peaceful companionship of a weekend afternoon. I could hear the birds chirping outside, even over the whoosh of the air conditioning. It was a bucolic high-summer scene — until the phone rang.

Then we went into a frenzy that has lasted until today, as the repairmen try to pinpoint the problem. One thing I can tell you. It sure is tough to be creative in the 90-degree-plus heat. But the staff has soldiered on, despite the sultry air. Yes, we have fans and, yes, we have air conditioning in the rest of the building, some of which in theory should waft into the stricken room.

But it has been uncomfortable, and the staff has persevered. If your newspaper feels a little damp, I trust you’ll under-

How did we manage before air conditioning? There are still people who do not have air conditioning today by choice. Apartments and stores weren’t air conditioned when I was in the first decade of my life — only movie theaters were, and that’s where we hung out for two features and a news short on Saturday afternoons. When we wanted to cool down on Sundays, we rode the subway out to Rockaway Beach in Brooklyn — the end of the line — then walked the blocks to the sand and the surf, marveling at the seaside breeze. We stayed there — my parents, my brother, my sister and I — until quite late before returning to our stuffy apartment, squeezing as much time as we could from our comfortable location. Sometimes it even got quite cool along the water’s edge at night.

We never complained.

During the week, we took refuge in Central Park, sitting on a bench or a blanket that we might have carried through the streets. We would pass neighbors hanging over their ground-floor windowsills and young-

sters lounging on the steps of their stoops. Once we reached the park, my dad would find a thicket of trees and spread the blanket for us. Stretched out, we deeply inhaled the sweet summer evening breezes that might come along. After my brother, who was almost 14 years older, purchased his car, he would take us for rides after work with the side windows rolled down and the wing windows directing the flow of air onto our faces. Once we cleared the downtown streets and reached the parkway, he could get up enough speed to make us rejoice in the stream of air.

Even when I was in my 20s and married, we didn’t have air conditioning in our car, although it was available as an expensive option. It wasn’t until we lived on the Texas air base and bought a station wagon from a local dealer for our growing family that we got air conditioning. It turned out that was standard in every car in the South.

How perfectly wonderful, but we did take a bit of ribbing from our friends and family about being spendthrifts when we drove back north. That was in the late 1960s, in a world long gone.
