looking for someone who is lost that a caretaker calls the second he or she realizes, even before he or she searches for the person. “Thankfully most of our searches end before we even get there,” he said. “Which is great. I tell all the clients, ‘Please, don’t hesitate to call us because we’re working, we’re on the road, we’re there. If you think your person is missing, just call us. We can start by sending someone to your area. Five minutes later we’re just pulling in and you found them, no big deal, we’ll just go back to work.’ I don’t want people to think they’re burdening us.” Weinfeld said there are approximately 108 clients enrolled in the program, with roughly 50 percent being seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The other 50 percent are children and adults with autism. He said there has been a 100 percent success rate out of the 3,000 reported searches in North America. Those interested in the program can fill out a form with the Sheriff’s Department, and after a home visit and approval, can purchase the kit for approximately $300. Weinfeld said health insurance may cover the expense in some cases and others may be eligible to receive it for free. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, a voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research, one in three seniors die with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, and it’s the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. The association states 5.7 million Americans are currently living with the disease, and it’s projected that number will rise to about 14 million by 2050. “The use of electronic tracking devices may be an appropriate part of a comprehensive safety plan which offers peace of mind for individuals with the disease and their caregivers,” said Douglas Davidson, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association, Long Island Chapter.”It should never be used as a replacement for needed supervision, and families should prepare for safety issues throughout the course of the disease.” For more information on Project Lifesaver, visit www.suffolkcountysheriffsoffice.com/project-lifesaver. When someone goes missing, it can be a terrifying experience for the person as well as family, friends and neighbors, especially when the individual has an impairment. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department is reminding the public of its Project Lifesaver initiative after John Wile, a Stony Brook man with Alzheimer’s, was found dead Aug. 8 on the Research and Development Park property, also in Stony Brook, after leaving his home to jog two days earlier. The 10-year-old rapid-response program aids clients who may wander due to cognitive impairments or other afflictions, such as Alzheimer’s, dementia and autism. Deputy Sheriff Sgt. Brian Weinfeld said those enrolled in the sheriff’s program wear a wristband with a transmitter that can be used on the wrist, ankle or as a necklace. The radio frequency transmitter and wristband come with a case, tester and battery. The battery and wristband have to be changed or charged every 30 to 60 days depending on the type. He said caretakers are informed to call a special line with the Sheriff’s Department and 911 as soon as it’s discovered that someone with the transmitter is missing. The calls are received at the sheriff’s communication bureau and a text message is sent out to all Project Lifesaver responders, which is approximately 15 people within the department who are spread out from Montauk to Amityville. While all may not be working when an emergency occurs, Weinfeld said sometimes a responder will join the search on his or her day off. Once the responders get a message that someone is missing they turn on their equipment and will receive a signal every one second transmitted from the person’s location device, Weinfeld said. The range of the signal depends on the terrain, and a responder’s antennae can pick up a signal approximately 3 miles on land and 5 in the air. The signal can be picked up by the antenna on a car or from a handheld antenna when searching on the ground. Using radio frequencies has its benefits. “It’s not susceptible to satellites going down, cloudy weather or being in a basement,” he said. “That signal is going to be strong no matter what. Whereas with a GPS-type of device, you’re going to be relying on satellites and a clear path to the sky and that type of stuff.” Weinfeld said responders start from where the person went missing and have an estimated range of how far the person could have wandered, which can be about 4 miles an hour. When a man in Brentwood went missing recently, a responder was near the Sagtikos State Parkway and the man was found within three minutes, according to the deputy sheriff sergeant. Obituaries John Wile

John Wile, of Stony Brook, died after a 14-year battle with Alzheimer’s. John, never wanting to give in to the disease, went for a run the morning of Aug. 6, became disoriented, and wandered into the woods behind Gyrodyne. He was found Aug. 8 after being missing for more than 50 hours. He died as he lived — unafraid of challenge, active to the end. John was born in Los Angeles in 1943. His father, Harry Ham, a Hollywood agent, died before he was born. His mother, Helen Buchanan, married Everett Wile when John was 4 years old. He met his wife, Karin, of 51 years when they both attended California State University in Northridge. They moved east to Rhode Island, where John received his doctorate in economics at Brown University. He taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before transferring to Stony Brook University in 1973. After teaching, he went into consulting and worked in Manhattan and White Plains. He started his own consulting firm in Stony Brook in 1998. Then John became a founding member of the Three Village Community Trust. John took up running in middle age on a bet with a friend and ran in several marathons including the New York City Marathon in 2001. His love of swimming began in high school and he participated in a masters group for years. John’s greatest love was his motorcycle, and after his diagnosis he planned and undertook a solo cross-country trip to Los Angeles. John is survived by his wife Karin, daughter Erin Wile, son-in-law Marc Thomas, grandchildren

Raia and Zephyr Thomas, and sister Nan Wile. A celebration of his life will be held in late September. The family would like to thank all the wonderful friends, neighbors, caring strangers, the police and fire departments who gave up their time to look for John.

Jean M. Bubnis

Jean M. Bubnis, 89, of East Setauket, died April 11. She was born July 1, 1928, in Port Jefferson Station, the daughter of Edythe and Henry House. Jean was a retired head cook for the Three Village school district. She enjoyed Bingo, needlepoint, crossword puzzles, cards and going to the casino. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Elaine; sister, Marjorie, along with other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph and son Joseph. Services were held at St. James R.C. Church, April 17. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of East Setauket. Contributions made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital in her memory would be appreciated.

Donald A. Roth

Donald A. Roth of Venice, Florida, formerly of East Setauket, died June 14. He was born Feb. 7, 1940, to Arthur and Genevieve Roth in Rockville Centre. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Patricia (Trish). He was the loving father to

Virginia (Judd) Petrone, Arthur T. Roth II (Julie) and Jonathan Roth; stepfather to Nicole Thomas and Robert (Julie) Hamilton; beloved grandfather — “Poppy” — to Kristin (Mike) Haendler, Alex and Megan Hayes, Katie and Thomas Roth, Victoria, Christiana, Patricia and Mackenzie Thomas, and Emma and Lilly Hamilton; dear brother of Carol (Jay) Madigan; and uncle to J. P. and Mary Madigan. He was a graduate of La Salle Military Academy and C. W. Post. He had a career in banking for 60 years. Don gave his time to many organizations over the years. He was chairman of the Smithtown Hunt for a number of years. He was director of the Suffolk County Girl Scouts, director of Nissequogue Golf Club and member of the Elks in Venice, to name a few. He was a wonderful and loving friend and will be missed by many. Services were held at St. James R.C. Church June 22. Interment followed at the Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.

Frank F. Belsito

Frank F. Belsito, 85, a longtime community resident, died July 3. He was born Feb. 21, 1933, in Brooklyn, the son of Margaret and Vincenzo Belsito. Frank Belsito was the beloved companion of Doris Brennan; brother of Louise Pastorelli; uncle to Zina and Sharif Fayache, Victor and Janice Pastorelli; and stepfather and stepgrandfather to Michelle, Kenneth, Patrick, Kevin, Sean, Kyle, Meghan and Kelsey Brennan. He was the commander of American Legion Pearl Harbor Post 1941; a past New York State commander of Catholic War Veterans; chairman

and founder of the annual Calverton National Cemetery Memorial Day flag placement program; chairman of Purple Heart Monument at Calverton for those lost or injured at Pearl Harbor; chairman of the Korean War Monument placed at Suffolk County Memorial Park in Hauppauge; and an overall tireless volunteer for his fellow veterans. Belsito was afforded full military honors at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of East Setauket. Maureen Collette Grzymala, 86, a longtime community resident, died July 10. She was born Feb. 2, 1932, in New York City to Alice and Thomas Flanagan. Maureen was a retired quality control inspector for Texas Instruments. She was a great mother who enjoyed cooking, crocheting and old westerns. She was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed spending time with her family. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Susan (Anthony) and Allison (Jeff); her son Christopher (Joanne); nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, along with many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward and son Edward. Services were held at Bryant Funeral Home, July 17. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Democrats should embrace Tax cuts, regulation rollbacks new leadership for the future fueling resurgent economy BY PERRY GERSHON It’s time for transformation within the Democratic Party. Our party represents a big tent. We welcome Blue Dog conservatives and liberal progressives equally. The focus on issues that worked for Democrat Conor Lamb in Pennsylvania is not the same as what worked for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York City. Most of all, I’m focusing on getting Democrats in better touch with issues that matter to Long Islanders. It’s a fact that the wings of the Democratic Party coexist successfully and have for decades. We are a party committed to affordable health care for all Americans, without penalty for pre-existing conditions. We want to see reductions in prescription drug prices. We are committed to fighting income inequality, to protecting Social Security and Medicare. We want fair and comprehensive immigration reform with secure and enforceable borders. We want to see America strong and vibrant, with stable relationships with our allies. We are By Perry fully committed to growing the American middle class. We believe good-paying jobs and strong unions are the keys to a robust American economy. Equal pay for equal work must be cemented into law. But as Republicans have taken over elected governance in Washington — the presidency, the Senate and the House of Representatives — it is time for us Democrats to transition to new leadership as we prepare to retake partial control in 2018. Let’s not permit the other side to run against Democrats of the past; we are running for a better tomorrow. When we take back the House this November, there must be new party leadership at the helm. It is time for the next generation

of Democrats in leadership to stand up for all of us. The election is not about Democratic leaders of the past. It is time for us to move forward. Nationally, the 2018 elections are about a vision for a new future, and when the Democrats win we must offer a new face of party leadership. The election for a Democratic speaker of the House will come only after the Democrats have achieved victory in a sufficient number of individual House races in November. I entered the race for Congress because I believe in the American values shared by my fellow Long Islanders. In New York’s 1st Congressional District, we must reduce health care costs and create fairer taxation, while making sure Lee Zeldin cannot allow the import of concealed weapons into New York that would be illegal in our state. Zeldin voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, a calamitous act that would have driven up health care costs for our most needy. That’s what voters care about. I am running for a future with better-paying jobs, a stronger Gershon infrastructure that makes Long Island more competitive for employers, and a 21st-century economy where our young people want to remain in Suffolk County because there are good opportunities for them. Zeldin opposes a woman’s right to make choices about her own body, while I understand the need to protect Roe v. Wade and to fight for equal pay for equal work. The next Democratic House speaker will represent all of these values, and the time to select that new leader will come in January. Our economy is strong and growing stronger with an economic environment spurring considerable job growth and desperately needed opportunities for American workers. Millions of new jobs have now been created since the last presidential election. The resurgence of our nation’s economy has brought those who had previously given up on finding work off the benches and back into the workforce with Latino unemployment falling to a record low of 4.6 percent and labor-force participation at an all-time high for women, African-Americans and individuals without a college degree. Fewer Americans are relying on government programs and more are securing financial independence, finding the good-paying, high-quality jobs they need to support themselves and secure a brighter future for their family. With the reduction of unemployment and underemployment, the Department of Agriculture has reported that the number of SNAP nutrition assistance participants has deBy Lee creased by two million people since 2016, a testament to more Americans achieving financial independence. Through the reduction of corporate taxes and the elimination of harmful, job-killing red tape and regulations, confidence and investment are soaring to new heights with companies that were previously fleeing the United States returning with good-paying manufacturing jobs that have boosted GDP to higher than expected numbers. As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, I have worked to strike down executive branch regulations that unnecessarily harm consumers, small banks and the economy through the utilization of the Congressional Review Act,

which allows Congress to vote down federal agency regulations that are causing damage both intentionally and unintentionally. Coupled with the executive branch’s executive orders, we are witnessing record low unemployment rates and businesses investing in their employees and our nation’s economy, bringing consumer confidence to hover near an 18-year high. In fact, our economy is doing so well that right now there are more available jobs than people available to fill the positions. Now, more than ever, we need workers who have the skills to succeed in a 21st-century economy. It is critical we ensure access to career and technical education so all Americans who wish to work can thrive in a high-skill marketplace. During my time in Congress, I secured passage of important legislation like the STEM Education Act, which provides federal funding towards STEM programs in our schools, and I remain committed to forwarding programs that better prepare students for the 21st-century workplace. No matter how much progress is ever made, there will Zeldin always be important work still to do. One great area for further improvement is with America’s role in the global economy where opportunities to sell American goods are limitless and trade imbalances must be better addressed. Renegotiating NAFTA, pursuing advantageous bilateral trade deals and effectively pushing back on highly problematic Chinese policies are all critical with this effort. Increasing GDP, boosting trade surpluses and exporting American goods all while creating good-paying American jobs help to strengthen our economy and security. Driving on drugs

A 20-year-old man from Bellport was driving a 2004 Acura on and near Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station Aug. 9 at about 11 p.m., allegedly in the wrong direction on a one-way road, according to police. During a traffic stop it was determined he was allegedly driving under the influence of a drug, police said. He also allegedly had marijuana in his possession, police said. He was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Bar fight

On Aug. 13 at about 7:30 p.m., a 41-year-old man from Selden allegedly kicked another man in the face several times while outside of a bar on Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai, requiring medical attention for the victim, according to police. The suspect was arrested and charged with third-degree assault.

Jewelry stolen

Jewelry and a whale’s tooth were stolen from a home on Flax Pond Woods Road in Old Field Aug. 11 at about noon, according to police. The unknown suspect broke a sliding glass door to gain entry into the home, police said.

Unlicensed operation

Brandishing a switchblade

In a parking lot in the rear of businesses on Main Street in Port Jefferson Aug. 11 at about 10 p.m., while seated in the driver’s seat of a 2008 Nissan allegedly held a switchblade in public view while yelling obscenities and making threatening remarks to unidentified people during a dispute, according to police. He was arrested and charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and disorderly conduct.

Mailbox malfeasance

Between 8:30 p.m. Aug. 10 and 10 p.m. Aug. 11, mailboxes at several homes — two on Baron Court in Stony Brook, several on Skylark Lane in Stony Brook and one on Cinderella Lane in Setauket — were damaged, according to police.

Pocketbook snatched

At Rite Aid in Jefferson Plaza Shopping Center on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station, someone stole a pocketbook at about 4:30 p.m. Aug. 11, according to police.

Bike stolen

A locked up bicycle was stolen from the Stony Brook Long Island Rail Road station on North Country Road at about 9 a.m. Aug. 11, according to police.

A 39-year-old man from Mount Sinai was driving a 2004 Mazda on Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station near the intersection of Railroad Avenue at about 7 p.m. Aug. 10 and was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to police. He was allegedly driving knowing his license had been suspended or revoked on at least 10 different occasions, police said. He was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

At about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 12, a 29-year-old man from Plymouth, Massachusetts, allegedly possessed a loaded firearm in his vehicle outside of a business on Main Street in Port Jefferson, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Two hydrangea trees were stolen from Four Corners Produce on Boyle Road in Terryville Aug. 11 at about 11:30 a.m., according to police.

Cash grab

Cash was taken from a wallet within a home on Old Town Road in Terryville Aug. 10 at about 11 p.m., according to police. At a home on Route 112 in Terryville, the front door was kicked in and jewelry was stolen from within at about 11 a.m. Aug. 11, according to police.

A local Girl Scout’s project has been a golden opportunity to help make one beach a little bit cleaner and safer. Lauren Reitano, a Girl Scout with Troop 2547 in Centereach, installed two monofilament recycling receptacles at West Meadow Beach Aug. 7 for her Gold Award project. The award is the highest a Girl Scout can achieve, and the project challenges high school students to identify and solve a community problem. Reitano, 16, said she knew her undertaking would involve West Meadow Beach. She said she visits the Town of Brookhaven beach frequently and notices people leaving fishing lines behind. She decided to install the durable plastic

receptacles made of polyvinyl chloride pipes at the town beach to provide a place for fishers to properly discard their fishing lines. “A beach cleanup is great, but that’s not going to last,” the soon-to-be senior at Centereach High School said. Reitano said the receptacles, which are located at the beginning of the nature path when entering from the parking lot, look like candy canes, and fishers can place lines in the top part of it. Every other week she will go to the beach to empty them, and in the future she can pass the project down to a younger Scout. The Girl Scout said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) stopped by the beach while she was installing them and chatted with her about the project. “Installing the monofilament receptacles is doing a great service to the environment and protecting the wildlife in and around the water,” Romaine said in a statement. “Fishing line is one of the most frequent and hazardous forms of marine debris, and I thank Lauren for helping to prevent more plastics from getting into our waterways.” To begin her project, Reitano sat with Brookhaven environmental educator Nicole Pocchiare who walked her through all the steps of the project, which involved working with the town to get approval for placement of the containers. Reitano said while the process with the town took a few months, the actual construction and installing of the receptacles was about a half-hour each. On Aug. 7, she spent approximately two hours at the beach with her mother and Pocchiare finding the ideal spots and measuring for proper placement. As they were completing the installation,

Reitano said a bicyclist thanked them and told her he witnessed people handling discarded lines and hooks getting cut by the hooks. “It’s dangerous for people and animals as well because when it gets in the water, it can strangle them,” Reitano said. Her mother, Robyn, who is a co-leader with Troop 2547, said she was proud of her daughter, who is usually quiet, being persistent enough to get the job done by going through the proper channels with the town for approval and waiting for a response.

“It makes me feel good as a life lesson because she was able to really see it through,” the mother said. Lauren Reitano said Girl Scouts should choose something they are interested in when looking to earn a Gold Award because the project can take some time. “If you really don’t have an interest in what you’re doing, then it’s going to drag on,” she said. “If you have an interest in the topic — like I have an interest in the beach and the environment — it’s going to be super fun.”

Sun, food and fun were on the agenda at West Meadow Beach. The Three Village Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual family barbecue at the town beach Aug. 8. Bagel Express was on hand to serve the food, and the store’s owner Dave Prestia donated all the hamburgers and hot dogs. Attendees had a chance to win a variety

of raffle prizes, and the Stony Brook Rotary Club provided a golf simulator. Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) and Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) joined residents at the barbecue which has been an annual tradition of the chamber for nearly 20 years. Lemonade stand provides refreshing summer fun

What was once a simple lemonade stand in front of a Stony Brook house, has turned into a sweet community-driven event raising thousands each year. The 6th annual Three Village Kids Lemonade Stand was back at R.C. Murphy Junior High School for the second year on Aug. 8. The event was founded by siblings Maddie and Joseph Mastriano with help from dozens of student volunteers from the Three Village school district. Fifty-cent cups of lemonade were poured by young student volunteers and kids played games with athletes from Stony Brook University teams. Sales from the lemonade stand benefit Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. At the event, $24,609 was raised and donations were still coming in after Aug. 8. As of Aug. 15, the organizers reached their goal of $30,000. also balancing their studies and time training. “They have the confidence to go against these bigger players, and they find success,” he said. “Ryan is more of a warrior getting to ground balls and sets up the plays, always thinking and analyzing before he acts, and Dylan finishes those plays — he’s more free-flowing and just goes for it. They’re able to accomplish the goals they set for themselves.” Dylan is a top scorer. The attack finished second on the team and 14th in the county in points with 53 goals and 21 assists behind Patriots superstar Matt Grillo, who ranked sixth in Suffolk. “He pushed me to always play my best and his contribution to the team was very important,” Ryan said of his brother. “He has

a very quick release with his shot and has a great lacrosse IQ.” Negus said he’s hoping Dylan, his soon-to-be captain, can steer the ship in the right direction after 21 Patriots were lost to graduation. “Dylan has been outstanding throughout his career, he’s really stepped up on the offensive side — he makes people around him better, and that’s the sign of a good leader,” Negus said. “And Dylan has never played like he’s been the younger sibling. He steps out on the ﬁeld and constantly plays bigger than he is.” Negus said he’s excited to have at least one brother for one more year. “They’re two brothers that we’ve loved having a part of this program,” the coach said. “They’ve set their mark on it.”

Trading in their hockey sticks for lacrosse ones changed the lives of Ward Melville’s Pallonetti brothers. Recent graduate Ryan and soon-to-be senior Dylan were fundamental pieces to a Patriots team that pulled out back-to-back state championship titles the last two seasons. The success was sweeter for Ryan, a Franklin & Marshall College-bound two-way midfielder, after having his stellar sophomore season cut short and missing all junior year rehabbing from a hair fracture in his hip and a torn meniscus. In his last game in the green and gold, he scored three goals and added an assist in Ward Melville’s dominating 15-2 win over West Genesee in the state finals. “He works extremely hard — it was his time,” head coach Jay Negus said. “We saw he had that kind of stuff in him all along. Had he not been injured I think we would’ve seen all that that much sooner. But I also don’t think Ryan has reached his full potential. I think he’s ready for the next step, and I think he’s going to flourish in college.” The injuries also changed Pallonetti’s life forever. “I was beyond excited to finally be a part of such a great program,” he said of making the varsity team as a sophomore. “Getting injured and having it all be so short-lived sucked, but it motivated me to come back better than I was. The journey it took to get to that point — where

hoisting up the championship plaque felt even better than scoring the goals — is irreplaceable. I made sure to stay disciplined with what I had to do to recover properly, and I didn’t let anything get in the way of that.” At 4 years old he was playing hockey in the driveway with his brother. The pair also played baseball, basketball and football, and said they weren’t into hockey after first trying it. But they quickly grew fond of the game’s fast pace and worked well with one another. “It’s a competitive game that takes a lot of practice and hard work,” Dylan Pallonetti said. “Ryan and I definitely have a feel for each other on the field. That chemistry developed in the driveway and on the front lawn.” That competitive side started for the dynamic duo with Ryan growing up as a New York Rangers hockey fan, his younger brother rooting for the Islanders. That spirited side led them to test one another, especially during home games. “Both are very fast and athletic, have great hands,” Negus said. “That’s very important in lacrosse, and I think that also can be credited to their time playing hockey.” Ryan Pallonetti will continue to compete out on the ice, hoping to contribute to Franklin & Marshall’s club team. Dylan will be taking to the Ward Melville Patriots Ice Hockey Club team once more before heading to the University of Massachusetts in fall 2019. The Pallonetti’s father Kevin said he and his wife Michele have been in awe of what their sons have been able to do out on the turf while

Attacks on the free press must stop

In the July 12 edition of The Village Times Herald, two articles in particular gave me pause: Susan Perretti’s Your Turn column and Myra Gordon’s letter, “Proud to be on Zeldin enemies list.” My immediate reaction in both cases was there must be more to this — people don’t routinely get threatened with arrest willy-nilly. I also wondered if there was an attempt by the newspaper to corroborate any of the details. Susan Perretti “never got to say the words” because she was on an ill-advised mission to undermine the opposition and

Below is an editorial written by Judy Patrick, the New York Press Association’s vice president for editorial development. We’ve been complacent. We thought everybody knew how important a free press was to our world and that all this talk about us being the enemy of the people would be dismissed for the silliness that it is. But the reckless attacks have continued, instigated and encouraged by our president. When the leader of the free world works to erode the public’s trust in the media, the potential for damage is enormous, both here and abroad. We once set an example of free and open government for the world to follow. Now those who seek to suppress the free flow of information are doing so with impunity. The time has come for us to stand up to the bullying. The role journalism plays in our free society is too crucial to allow this degradation to continue. We aren’t the enemy of the people. We are the people. We aren’t fake news. We are your news and we struggle night and day to get the facts right. On bitter cold January nights, we’re the people’s eyes and ears at town, village and school board meetings. We tell the stories of our communities, from the fun of a county fair to the despair a family faces when a loved one is killed. We are always by your side. We shop the same stores, attend the same churches and hike the same trails. We struggle with day care and worry about paying for retirement. In our work as journalists, our first loyalty is to you. Our work is guided by a set of principles that demand objectivity, independence, open-mindedness and the pursuit of the truth. We make mistakes, we know. There’s nothing we hate more than errors but we acknowledge them, correct them and learn from them. Our work is a labor of love because we love our country and believe we are playing a vital role in our democracy. Self-governance demands that our citizens need to be well-informed and that’s what we’re here to do. We go beyond the government-issued press release or briefing and ask tough questions. We hold people in power accountable for their actions. Some think we’re rude to question and challenge. We know it’s our obligation. People have been criticizing the press for generations. We are not perfect. But we’re striving every day to be a better version of ourselves than we were the day before. That’s why we welcome criticism. But unwarranted attacks that undermine your trust in us cannot stand. The problem has become so serious that newspapers across the nation are speaking out against these attacks in one voice this week on their editorial pages. As women’s rights pioneer and investigative journalist Ida B. Wells wrote in 1892: “The people must know before they can act, and there is no educator to compare with the press.” Letters … We welcome your letters. There must be more to this subvert the obvious purpose of the event; a kickoff is not a town hall meeting. And frankly, it seems rude to attend such an event with the intent to disrupt. Thanks to the information in Jim Soviero’s letter in the July 26 edition of The Village Times Herald, “Lists, contradictions, credibility,” readers learned some of the backstory. Interviewed by the Smithtown News, Ms. Gordon spoke of the plan — devised with three others — to disrupt the Zeldin kickoff celebration. In light of the documentation of a planned disruption, Stefanie Werner might

want to tone down “Zeldin goons” and “the latest stunt at Smithtown Elks Lodge” [“Zeldin only cares about allies,” The Village Times Herald, Aug. 2]. I would apply the word “stunt” to the failed disruption plot hatched by Ms. Perretti, Ms. Gordon et al. In “George Washington’s Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation,” rule #50 reads: “Be not hasty to believe flying reports to the disparagement of any.” Isabel Cosentino East Setauket

Nothing sadistic about Sessions policy Since the election of President Donald Trump, it has somehow become accepted practice, possibly even de rigueur for critics of the president to use the most outrageous rhetorical language possible in their characterizations of him and his policies. This seems to be particularly true with regard to liberal college professors, who almost certainly are equipped to express their opinions in a more accurate and civilized manner. The most recent offensive example comes in the latest letter from Arnold Wishnia, “Conservatives understood too well” in the Aug. 2 The Village Times Herald, who refers to “Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ new sadistic zero-tolerance policy on aliens attempting to enter the United States.” Surely Wishnia knows the meaning of the word “sadistic,” and also is aware of numerous historical horrors in which the treatment of innocent individuals or

groups by other groups can accurately be described as sadistic in nature. The most obvious examples of these nightmares include persecutions perpetrated by the Third Reich throughout Europe, and the Empire of Japan in Asia, beginning with the Nanking Massacre in China. And, just as clearly, absolutely not a single element of any policy implemented by Jeff Sessions, or, by extension, President Trump, can possibly be interpreted as being “sadistic” in any way. If the children of illegal aliens are subjected to any sort of mistreatment or abuse, it occurs during the process of smuggling them illegally into this country, and is perpetrated by their own countrymen, and not by any agency of the United States government. In many cases, these unfortunate children are used as pawns by their parents or other adults, as a form of subterfuge to legalize their own status. For any person, or family, who wishes to en-

ter the United States legally, either as an immigrant or as a refugee, the procedures are well established, and are entirely decent and humane. Wishnia claims that we seek “to justify incarceration and seizure of children,” as though we were conducting raids across the border in the fashion of Pancho Villa, and kidnapping them. As always, we welcome new immigrants to our country, and we recognize and applaud the many contributions of those who have helped to make our country great — and, in fact, exceptional. My personal favorites include Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Carnegie, Nikola Tesla and Albert Einstein. We do not, however, need to be lectured by those who make no distinction between legal immigrants and illegal aliens, and particularly not by liberal college professors, who should know better. A satirical page from a beleaguered attorney general’s diary

ith great power comes great criticism. The following is a hypothetical diary entry from beleaguered Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who faces routine presidential ire: I don’t know how much longer I can take this. It’s not fair. Yes, I know my boss is angry, defensive and frustrated, but D. None he’s always pickof the above ing on me, calling BY DANIEL DUNAIEF me names. I think he wants to get rid of me. The other day, he called me “scared stiff” and “missing in action.”

Gosh, that doesn’t sound nice, now, does it? What’s worse? He didn’t say it to my face: He wrote it on Twitter, where the whole world can see his feelings. I’ve been turning the other cheek all this time, but I’m running out of cheeks. What can I do? Maybe I’ll develop a new hobby. I’ll practice that “lock her up” chant that tickles me so. I won’t do it in public. When I’m alone in my soundproof shower, I can say it quietly. I can get a small doll and look down on it, terrifying it the way my boss tries to intimidate me. I was conﬁrmed as attorney general by a 52-47 vote in the Senate. Now, I know it’s not quite as stunning and exciting as that electoral college win by the guy who keeps insulting me, but it’s still pretty cool and it was a close vote. You don’t hear me telling everyone about the 52 votes I got, the way my boss repeats, all these months later, that he got 304 electoral college votes.

I’m working hard, even though I recused myself from that Russia investigation. I’m just not sure how much more of these harsh insults I can take. I could resign. I could ride away from this situation into something much more fun and less stressful, like zip lining over an alligator pit. I’m just kidding, of course. There are no alligator pit zip lines but there are some people I’d like to see trying that. “Lock her up, lock her up!” Wait, I got distracted. I’m serving my country, but it just doesn’t seem rewarding. So, today, I did an internet search, “What to do if your boss is out to get you,” and I found an article in TopResume, a professional résumé service. It said I should evaluate the situation and see if I’m doing enough. Well, yeah, I am, so check on me, right? Or, maybe, check plus. Then, it said I should understand my boss’s issues and communication style, and it linked to another article that suggested ways to neutralize

a Machiavellian boss. It said I should present my ideas in a way that allows him to take credit. So far, I’m not sure I’ve done that. Then it says I should give him credit but, again, I don’t know what he wants credit for? My boss also seems like a seagull at times, diving in, depositing steaming piles of advice and then taking off, leaving the rest of us to clean up his mess. Now, I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but this sounds a bit like my boss. I’m also supposed to create a written record so I can go to human resources. I’m not sure what HR ofﬁce I could approach these days. I’ll say one thing for Twitter: It sure does allow me to keep track of all the things he’s said about me. Oh, and it also suggested I see the situation as a learning opportunity, helping me be a better boss. I guess if I were ever in his shoes, I wouldn’t need to criticize people publicly. A reader responds with a tale of mercy from California Dear Leah, My wife and I enjoy your weekly opinion pieces, and we especially enjoyed your column about a police encounter (“Techniques for avoiding trafﬁc tickets,” Aug. 9). It rekindled the memory of our encounter, 55 years ago, with the California Highway Patrol.

BY CHUCK DARLING n January 1963, while employed by the Gyrodyne helicopter company in St. James, I was “volunteered“ by the owner, Peter Papadakos, to lead a team of engineers and electronic technicians to assist the U.S. Navy ﬂeet in Coronado, California, installing our drone helicopters on Navy ships. This assignment was to last six months, so Nancy and I packed up the four kids, (ages 5, 4, 3 and 1), and the dog, locked up the house and ﬂew to San Diego. After we had settled in for a month, Nancy’s folks decided that they could use some time away from the brutal winter weather in

Illinois, so they drove to San Diego to warm up and to see their grandbabies. Whilst there they volunteered to stay with the rug rats for a long weekend, so we could have a respite from parenting. This was a godsend for Nance, for, other than the occasional movie, she hadn’t had a break from the kids for more than five years. She immediately contacted some friends that we knew from the University of Illinois who had settled in Southern California, and set up a long weekend in Las Vegas. Nancy’s folks had driven their 1958, fin-tailed Cadillac from Illinois, and since it had air conditioning, they thought it would be more comfortable for us to drive in it through the desert to Vegas than in the used Volkswagen Beetle which I had bought in San Diego. We gratefully accepted their offer. On a Friday morning in February, we kissed the kids goodbye, and headed east for Las Vegas. Driving the Caddy was like flying a plane — it was quiet, comfortable and fast. It was very

easy to let the speed creep up, as the road was flat and very few cars were evident, especially when compared with traffic on Long Island. As I noticed the speedometer at 80, I also noticed in the rear-view mirror, a California Highway Patrol car approaching with his bubble light flashing. Oh, no! I pulled over and the smartly dressed officer approached and said, “You were going a little fast there.” I told him that we were headed for Vegas for a long weekend, the first time for the two of us to be away from kids together, and we were giddy to get to the palaces of pleasure in Vegas. He asked to see my driver’s license, and I handed over my New York license. He said, “Why a New York license?” I told him I was on a temporary work assignment in San Diego, and hadn’t bothered to change it for a California permit. He said, “But you are driving a car with Illinois plates.” I said it was my father-inlaw’s car. He was visiting us from Illinois and the old folks were sitting with the kids back in Chula Vista while we were in Vegas. He asked to see the

car’s registration, and I told him that I had forgotten to get it from Nancy’s dad before we left. He had this incredulous, bewildered look on his face and just stared at me for the longest time — it seemed like an hour. Finally, he said, “I’m going to have to let you go with a warning.” I almost wet my pants with joy. But, since the CHP wasn’t known for its benevolence, I asked him, “Why?” He said, “Because a judge would lock you up forever if I wrote you up. You’re driving 80 miles an hour on a California highway; you have a New York driver’s license; you’re driving a car with Illinois plates on it — and you don’t possess the car’s registration. You would never get out of jail. Somehow, someway, I believe everything you’ve told me, but I’m not sure a judge would. Just get out of here, just leave.” As I watched him walking back to his patrol car, he was quietly shaking his head as though he had seen everything now.
