4, New York officeholders from many levels of government presented a united front. Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) warned President Barack Obama (D) and the Environmental Protection Agency that the plan to create a new disposal site poses a “major” threat to the ecologically vital habitat and blocks progress to end open-water dumping in Long Island’s waters.

The dredging of Connecticut harbors and rivers, meant to deepen waterways to allow ships clear passage, produces sludge that is being open-dumped in the Long Island Sound, according to Assemblyman Englebright’s (DSetauket) office.

Local environmentalists are also concerned with the practice being used long-term.

“We are grateful for the strong support of Governor Cuomo and our local state legislators in opposing this ill-conceived plan and putting the federal government on notice that Long Island Sound is off limits for the dumping of dredge spoils,” George Hoffman of the Setauket Harbor Task Force, a North Shore group that works for

Three Village Meals on Wheels delivers food and friendship

By Wenhao Ma Every Tuesday, 63-year-old retired teacher Diane Melidosian drives to St. Charles Hospital at 11 a.m. The Stony Brook native pulls up to the back entrance, where she loads six trays containing hot food and six bags of cold meals into her trunk.

The staff at the Port Jefferson hospital prepares these meals, which Melidosian delivers to her Three Village Meals on Wheels clients in Port Jefferson, most of whom are in their 80s and 90s.

As she places the meals on their tables, she chats with clients to see how they’re doing. Volunteers for the nonprofit make deliveries Monday through Friday.

Three Village Meals on Wheels was created 34 years ago by Mary Ada Niatas and Anna Mae Jenkins, who prepared and delivered hot meals to handicapped and elderly parishioners of the Stony Brook Community Church. The two felt a need to create a meal delivery program because none existed in the area at that time.

The area was not eligible under existing guidelines for public funds, said Melidosian, who serves as secretary on the organization’s board, but with the help of community leaders and Hun-

On Aug. 22, 1983, Three Village Meals on Wheels made its first delivery of 26 meals, via four routes, to 13 clients in the Three Village area. Today, the organization delivers 144 meals, via nine routes, to as many as 72 clients in northern Brookhaven Town, and is growing.

Ninety percent of Meals on Wheels’ clients are more than 70 years old and 10 percent are over 90. Most of them live alone

and are unable to shop or prepare their own food.

The cost for each client’s daily meals is $6.50 — $45.50 for an entire week. If the organization’s Client Services Committee determines that it’s needed, the fee may be reduced or waived.

Prior to accepting a new client, the organization sends a volunteer nurse to collect information and evaluate his or her needs. Special diets recommended by the client’s physician are implemented, and meals are planned and overseen by dieticians at the organization’s

three meal preparation sites: St. Charles Hospital and John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson and Sunrise Senior Living in East Setauket.

Melidosian first got involved with the organization about 15 years ago, filling in when a volunteer was not available. After she retired from her position as a reading specialist for the Smithtown schools, Melidosian became a weekly volunteer and has been making meal deliveries once a week for the past nine years.

“Being a substitute is nice, but

real relationships form when you have the same route week after week, as I now have,” Melidosian said. That’s what she likes most about her volunteer work.

“Delivering the meals is important, but for some clients, a visit from a volunteer is the only outside contact they may have each day,” Melidosian said. “We also assess if there are any specific concerns and pass this information to the office. When necessary, the family is contacted.”

One relatively new client is 83 years old, she said. He was always able to shop for himself, but when he was released from the hospital six months ago, on oxygen therapy, he could no longer hop in his car and go and get food.

“He, like all my clients, is grateful for this service,” Melidosian said. Another client, Mary Jane Lewis, will be turning 99 in September. “[The meals] are very, very good,” she said, adding that the vegetables are fresh and the meat is tender.

One client, who requested anonymity, thinks the organization is a lifesaver. “My daughter said they’re doing God’s work.”

In 2005, the EPA struck an accord with the governors of New York and Connecticut to reduce or limit the disposal of dredged material in the Sound by “examining alternative placement practices,” according to Englebright.

On April 27, 2016, the EPA proposed the Ocean Disposal; Designation of a Dredged Material Disposal Site in the Eastern Region of Long Island Sound, a third dumping location that would continue openwater dumping of dredge waste in eastern Long Island Sound for as long as 30 years.

The original two sites were slated to close

by Dec. 23, 2016, and according to the EPA that remains the plan.

Englebright previously said the EPA’s initial plan was for the dumping sites to be closed permanently, though the federal organization denied any commitment to do so in a statement.

Should the federal agency continue its plan to allow dumping of dredge spoils in eastern Long Island Sound, New York State will pursue legal action against the EPA, Cuomo said.

“Dredging is needed to ensure safe navigation in the sound,” EPA spokesman John Martin said in an email. “The EPA has not made a final decision, but we believe the proposal strikes an appropriate balance between the need for dredging to maintain safe and efficient navigation, and our desired outcome to restore and protect Long Island Sound.”

Englebright doesn’t see this latest proposal as a step in the right direction.

“The draft DMMP appears to be the same open-water dredge-dumping plan we

have seen before,” he said.

In his comments at the press conference, Englebright said, “Federal, state and local governments have spent billions of taxpayer dollars to clean up Long Island Sound, and significant progress has been made … continued dredge dumping will make the task of cleaning up the Sound so much more difficult.” He referred to the Sound as a nationally significant estuary that has seen the return of dolphins and humpback whales during the past year, thanks to clean-up efforts.

Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) agreed that the state has made significant investments to repair decades of damage and that “real progress is being made, which makes the EPA’s recent proposal to expand the number of dredged material sites in the Sound even more difficult to comprehend … I fully support using whatever resources the state has at its disposal to fight the EPA’s plan and protect the long-term health of the Sound, so that it will continue to be an environmental and economic asset for future generations of Long Islanders.”

Governor Cuomo commented on the bipartisan nature of the press conference, saying, “I’m so proud to be with so many colleagues, unified on this issue.”

Indeed, the gathering included Flanagan, County Executive Steve Bellone (D), Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), and a host of lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. “This particular issue,” said Cuomo, “is probably one of the top priorities in the state and probably THE top priority for Long Island, if you ask me.” He noted the absurdity of the federal government dumping pollutants into a body of water that New Yorkers are dedicated to protecting.

Cultivating an ‘ugly’ tomato Ralph Mannone, 88, grew a three-pound tomato in his garden on Strongs Neck.

The tomato is a variety called Belmont, also known as the “ugly” tomato because of its unpredictable and bulbous shapes. The variety has few seeds and great taste.

Mannone always saves some seeds from one year’s crop to plant the next year.

He uses compost to nourish the plants and bamboo stakes to suppport them. He says his neighbors are all too willing to get rid of the bamboo.

To support the branches of the tomato plants, he ties them to the stakes with leaves from a yucca plant. The leaves last the whole season and eventually decay into the soil.

Medical screenings for men

More than 200 participants learned more about the importance of health screenings.

Stony Brook medical staff offered the following free screenings: cholesterol, blood pressure, carotid artery, prostate blood test (PSA), and varicose veins.

“Several of the screenings resulted in patients requiring follow-up care, which emphasizes the importance and the impact of health awareness,” said Angela A. Kokkosis, MD, co-medical director of the vascular lab at Stony Brook Medicine.

Proceeds from the event support men’s programs and services at SBU Cancer Center.

At the Port Jefferson Long Island Railroad station on Aug. 3 at about 8 a.m., a 25-year-old man from East Patchogue shoved a woman he didn’t know to the ground, yelled at her and fled, police said.

He also allegedly resisted arrest when police pursued him. He was charged with third-degree assault and two counts of resisting arrest.

Gap in judgment

A 25-year-old man from Coram was in the rear parking lot of Gap clothing store on Main Street and Arden Place in Port Jefferson at about 2 a.m. on Aug. 5 when he began acting in an aggressive and threatening manner towards a group of people, according to police. When he was arrested he also spit at two police officers. He was charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of second-degree harassment.

Heroin on Canal

On Aug. 6 at about 11 a.m., a 52-year-old man from Middle Island possessed heroin

on Canal Road in Mount Sinai, police said. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Late night or early morning?

A cell phone was stolen from someone sleeping on a bench at the Port Jefferson Long Island Railroad station at about 5 a.m. on Aug. 7, police said.

Wallet wanders off

A wallet was stolen from an unlocked 2016 Ford parked at The Bates House, an event hall on the property of Frank Melville Memorial Park in Setauket, at about 11 p.m. on Aug. 6, police said.

Fishy situation

On July 4 at about 9 a.m., a memory card was stolen from a fishing GPS inside the cabin of a boat at Ralph’s Fishing Station on Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai, according to police.

The Kiwanis Club of Three VillageBrookhaven Township is proud to announce the result of its recent board election. Local Three Village resident and business owner Scott Sanders has been named presidentelect of the club for 2016-17.

Scott is passionate about his community, where he has lived for over 50 years, and has been a realtor, insurance broker and small business owner for more than 35 years. Scott serves on the boards of the Three Village Civic Association and the Setauket Neighborhood House. He is a member of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce and has recently joined the Walk for Beauty committee.

Elected to second terms are: Phil Buonomo, vice president; Allison Kane secretary; and Christine Intrabartola, treasurer.

This Kiwanis Club was chartered in 1987 by a small group of volunteers who had one thing in common: a desire to improve the lives of children throughout the community and the world.

Janice Mollet logs 16K volunteer hours Janice Mollet was among the honorees at the annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon last month. Mollet, who was named Volunteer of the Year in 2000, was recognized by Stony Brook University Hospital for reaching 16,000 service hours.

Mollet is a retired employee of the Health Sciences Library who has been a volunteer at Stony Brook since March of 1992. Her current assignment is in the Volunteer Office.

Stony Brook University Hospital volunteers provide help each year, caring for patients and spending time with patients’ family members.

Each year, more than 600 volunteers assist staff with the day-to-day work that contributes to a quality health care experience for patients and families.

Caroline Reale is 100 years old Caroline Reale, a resident of Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community, recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Born in Brooklyn Aug. 3, 1916, as a child she enjoyed the outdoors — and visiting Rocky Point with her family, where they had a bungalow. They would visit family and friends on the weekends.

Caroline went to business school after high school, and after graduating, she was employed at F&M Candy during the Great Depression. After several years, she was promoted to superintendent and, as such, she was responsible for the plant running smoothly. She worked there for 29 years.

Throughout her life, Caroline has had many hobbies, including swimming, tennis, ice-skating and horseback riding. An avid traveler, she visited Mexico, Italy, South America and the Bahamas. Caroline retired early and moved to Jefferson’s Ferry 14 years ago. She continues to participate in several programs offered at Jefferson’s Ferry.

On July 31, Legislator Kara Hahn (DSetauket) recognized Christopher Noakes for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Noakes worked with the legislator to install split-rail fencing, established a new route for residents to use who may not be able to complete the full 1.5-mile trail, new signage for parking and a bench at Forsythe Meadow County Park.

Hahn officially cut the ribbon to open the walking trail just about one year ago.

The county and Three Village Boy Scouts

led by Jeffrey Weissman, Scoutmaster of Troop 377, made several improvements to the property, including a gated entranceway for the trail, fence posts and directional signs where the trail diverges to help guide visitors, and the addition of hiking sticks placed in holders at the trail’s entrance and exit.

Signs provide information about ticks, poison ivy and the bamboo forest, through which the trail runs.

Former SB department chief Vincent Franco gets a firematic send-off

By SuSan RiSoli Vincent Franco was always all in. The former Stony Brook Fire Department captain, passed away recently at age 57, the result of complications from diabetes.

He went the distance to help others — and now his friends have memories just as steadfast as he was.

First assistant chief Scott Roberts said Franco was a Stony Brook resident who joined the department in 1997. Badge Number 136 of the hook and ladder company took the job seriously, Roberts said.

“Vinnie would definitely tell you the way it was,” he recalled. “He was an outspoken individual who was not shy.”

Trained as a safety officer, Franco was a driving force in planning for fires before they occurred, and he made sure the safest procedures were observed at the scene.

Even when ill health prevented him from going to fires, Franco would listen to the alarm on the radio. “He would give me a call and say, ‘Hey, this could have been done’ or ‘You guys did a good job,’” Roberts said.

Jim Riley knew Franco first as a home improvement contractor whose stamp was on many renovation projects throughout the Three Village area. They became good friends.

Part of getting the job done right, for Franco, was supporting his team. “He

Franco was thorough and went the extra mile. Sourcing materials or tracking down hard-to-get items for a home improvement job, “he’d be relentless in contacting suppliers,” Riley said.

Franco was a meticulous, skilled drafts-

man, and he drew plans his crew could follow with confidence. “The person you want to talk to when you’re running a project or working with plans is the draftsman that drew them, not the architect,” Riley said, and Franco was that kind of draftsman.

But for all his emphasis on laying a solid foundation for others to build on and fol-

lowing procedures to get things done right, “Vinnie was his own man.”

Busy as he was, Franco still looked for ways he could help people. He mentored younger firefighters, teaching them how to drive the hook and ladder trucks.

When department members in his company were out of work, he gave them jobs.

“He helped people fix their houses, and he never took a dime for it,” Roberts said.

He is survived by his father, Nick, and his sister, Teresa. “Like many Italian families, he was very close with all his cousins,” said Roberts. “They were an extended family that did much together.”

Franco served the department in many ways — as lieutenant, safety officer, president and twice as captain. He even pitched for the softball team.

Vinnie was laid to rest with firematic honors, Roberts said, a service that included a final roll call.

Each department member responded when his or her name was called, but when Franco’s name was called, a bell was rung three times, and it was announced that he had answered his last alarm.

The fire whistles, that sounded at his burial were a fitting tribute to his loyalty to friends and the fire department.

For Franco, firefighting was “a calling,” Roberts said. “It’s just one of those things that’s in your heart.”

James V. Santomassimo Jim passed away on July 25, 2016 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the age of 81. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Martha and entire family at the time of his unexpected death.

Born in New York City on March 19, 1935, he graduated from St. Agnes High School at the age of 16 and attended Hofstra University before joining the army. His professional life began as a dance instructor for Arthur Murray, before a very successful career as an architect, project manager, design manager and ultimately, a consultant for several high-profile construction projects in New York City, including the former Time Warner Building and original NikeTown Store. Jim was an accomplished athlete, winning a myriad of awards and championships in baseball, semi-pro football, basketball, racquetball, golf and tennis.

Jim flourished in competition and continued to play golf and tennis up until the day prior to his untimely passing. A longtime resident of Stony Brook, he was the founder and first president of Three Village Little League baseball in 1971. Jim was a member of both the Stony Brook Swim and Racquet Club and St. George’s Golf and Country Club, where he achieved one of his 5 hole in ones. Jim stayed active in his Pompano Beach, Florida community serving on numerous boards and posts. Passionate about travel; Jim and his wife completed 137 cruises together and visited every continent in the world. His greatest passion of all was his family. Jim rarely missed a ball game, dance recital, graduation or event of his 3 children and 5 grandchildren. His commitment to help others was shown through his numerous anonymous charitable contributions. He is survived by his wife and lifelong dance partner, Martha, his daughter Gia Brennan, her husband Greg Brennan and their 3 children Gregory, Tyler and Marissa; his eldest son, Vincent Santomassimo; and son Rod Santomassimo, his wife Launa and their 2 children, Giana and Nicolas. Services were held at the St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Pompano Beach where Jim was an usher for 30 years.

Poquott residents have issues that need addressing

Proud to be a New Yorker, where ‘bipartisan’ has meaning Last Thursday was a glorious day weather-wise on Long Island. Under a clear blue sky, amid the sparkle of sunshine, a passel of politicians gathered at Sunken Meadow State Park in Smithtown for a press conference. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), the leader of the bipartisan group, wanted to show the federal government and the Environmental Protection Agency that New Yorkers will not sit by and watch as dredged materials dumped into yet another site — this time, at the eastern end of the Long Island Sound, threaten the estuary’s health and vitality.

Among the lawmakers participating in the impressive show of unity were Congressional representatives; members of the New York State Senate, including the majority leader; members of the New York State Assembly; Suffolk County legislators, including the county executive; and the supervisor of Smithtown. They are Democrats and Republicans, Conservatives and Liberals — but they were all clearly on the same page last Thursday. And as the governor noted, this does not happen often nowadays.

In his remarks, Cuomo praised Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) for a successful legislative session, noting that working together the parties were able to accomplish a lot for their constituents. And isn’t that the way government should work?

Cuomo also organized a letter-signing event for a missive addressed to the White House and the EPA, which was co-signed by 31 elected state officials protesting any further dump site in Long Island Sound.

We’re New Yorkers, as the governor said, and we’re people who love Long Island. Every person present last Thursday was concerned about the welfare of Long Island and its people, its marine life, its economy, its waters.

The setting was beautiful. The mood — collegial. The men and women — in harmony.

Thank you, Governor Cuomo, and everyone else involved, for making us proud to be residents of the great Empire State of New York. Bipartisanship enables good governing.

The Village of Poquott is experiencing a communication failure and I have therefore turned to local media to alert residents about issues that need to be addressed.

The current board of trustees avoids interacting with the community. In the past, board meetings were held twice a month at 7 p.m.

One meeting a work session with public comments at the end; the second a general meeting with comments permitted after each report and at the end.

The current board has chosen to schedule only one meeting a month, on whatever day seems to suit their availability. No public comments are permitted at work sessions, and comments are permitted only at the beginning of each general meeting. It’s hard to comment on issues you have not yet heard about or last discussed

a month before. With consistent public participation made so difficult, it is less likely that residents will attend any board meetings on a regular basis.

The July 19 work session lasted almost two hours because there was so much to cover — and that was with no public comment allowed!

To add insult to injury, the next board meeting was scheduled (without explanation) for August 31, seven long weeks later. How are the monthly bills going to be paid if they have not been approved?

Other examples of the mayor’s disdain for Village residents: 1) Mayor Parrish submitted a request for $5,000 in legal fees to cover expenses incurred during her recent mayoral campaign as a private citizen. The use of Village funds, equipment,

emails or supplies during campaigns is forbidden by NYS law.

2) Mayor Parrish expressed the opinion that only homeowners should have the right to vote and participate in business decisions for the Village, yet appointed the same tenant to be on both the planning board and ZBA. 3) The board voted on two resolutions re: conditions/nuisances at two addresses: 395 Main Street and 12 Walnut. They had no information supporting the building inspector’s report, but nevertheless, voted to accept it. The two Zombie houses on Bayview Ct. were not addressed.

Terrorism — utopia vs. reality update My letter “Our survival: utopia vs. reality” covered three main points.

1) We are facing a barbarous enemy whose declared war focuses on slaughtering innocents any way they can.

2) They use a variety of deadly devices, the most devastating of which have proven to be bombs and fuel-laden passenger jets, unleashed in essentially “gun-free” zones.

3) Readers were asked to chose between a utopianor reality-based approach to this growing existential threat.

The list of multicontinent attacks so clearly laid out several weeks ago has tragically grown. There have been bombings in Iraq and Afghanistan, killing scores and wounding hundreds. Assaults took place in Germany, while during mass, an 85 year old

French Catholic priest had his throat cut by jihadists.

Mr. Wishnia, in his comments on my letter, was sadly, only able to discern two points, both of which failed to substantially address any of the major themes cited above. The ironic thing about Arnold’s “critique” was that he basically, and we can be sure, unwittingly, confirmed with his own words what I wrote.

First, he was kind enough to reference one of the two court decisions, which did indeed rule NYS could not put a limit of 7 bullets on a magazine.

Next Mr. Wishnia affirmed my connection between the type of horror perpetrated by Islamic extremists and Nazis when he described them, “certainly as blood thirsty as the Nazis.”

Regarding the jihad-

ists’ reach, he trots out the Obama/Kerry company line that their footprint and numbers are shrinking in Syria and Iraq, ignoring the fact that these killers, and others like them, have spread to continents Third Reich aggressions never reached.

Virtually mimicking the clueless dismissiveness displayed by Barack Obama’s assignment of ISIS as the J.V. Team, Mr. Wishnia defines them as “rag tag.” Maybe in his utopian safe place, but it’s terrifically unlikely that many thousands of innocents suffering the reality of atrocities and slaughter would use “rag tag” to describe these terrorists.

Recently, I attended a wedding where not only the groom cried as he read his vows, but the father of

the bride also shed tears when he gave a speech during the reception. The groom was barely a few words into his vows when his voice cracked.

The audience waited, willing him to go on and all of them, except my son who was at his first wedding and was studying his image in the mirrored ceiling, appreciated the struggle to speak.

The man on the threshold of becoming a husband stopped several times, as he made fun of the tears and the mess he’d become, giving the audience a chance to laugh with him.

I have experienced larger moments, both positive and negative, when I felt such a strong flood of emotions that filled my eyes with tears and made it difficult to speak.

Clearly, however, it’s not a regular occurrence because my son asked me when, or if, I cried. Part of that, I suppose, comes from my reflexive need to turn off the tears in public.

I grew up at a time when boys

and men had to experience something extraordinary — either positively or negatively — to shed public tears. We had examples like the actor Alan Alda, who shed gutwrenching tears in the final episode of “M*A*S*H.” I recall being unable to say more than a few words to my mother when I called her from a pay phone to tell her that she had a granddaughter. Facing the corner of a phone booth, I shed tears of joy, especially when I said my daughter’s name for the first time. My mother must have heard my unsteady voice and asked, in the silence that followed, if I’d like her to come visit us in the hospital. Wiping away tears and nodding, I grunted something like “uh-huh.”

Men cry and, for the same physiological and psychological reasons as women, we benefit from that release, giving us an outlet for the literal flood of emotions.

At that recent wedding, the father of the bride knew when I spoke to

him at the cocktail hour that he’d struggle to get through his speech.

When the time came, he thanked everyone for coming and described the connection he felt with his daughter.

He could barely finish a sentence before his lips turned down and the tears fell beneath his glasses.

He and his new son-in-law clearly started off this marital connection with something in common: tears at the wedding.

I was sure when his first daughter was born that he felt the same way at the beginning of her life, as he contemplated the excitement and terror at the responsibility that came from becoming a father.

As he considered the start of her married life he seemed, like Steve Martin in “Father of the Bride,” to have an awareness of these new steps which, some day, may include her coming to terms with a little life wrapped in her arms.

His voice broke at the end of his speech when he said his daughter would “always be my girl.”

They are fun to be with, we like the person we are when we are with them, they share activities with us, they offer an ear when we need to talk over important matters, they cheer us up when we are down, they lend a hand when we need help, they broaden our horizons with their intelligence, knowledge and experience — and, most

But what if our friend doesn’t like us as much as we like him or her?

According to an article in The New York Times and other media, recent research on the subject of

friends would suggest that only about half of our friendships are mutual. Whoa! That means someone you think is a close friend might not feel the same way about you. Now that is a thought to make you feel instantly abandoned. But the Times further states that “the authenticity of one’s relationships has an enormous impact on one’s health and well-being.”

Who are our friends? Where do they come from? How many real friends can we have? How do we judge whether they are true friends?

And are we a true friend in return?

Certainly a true friend is more than someone on Facebook. Alexander Nehamas, a professor of philosophy at Princeton, told The Times that friendship is more like beauty or art, which kindles something deep within us and is “appreciated for its own sake.” It’s a lovely thought.

Ronald Sharp, a professor of English at Vassar College, edited a book, “The Norton Book of Friendship,” with his friend, Eudora Welty in 1991. Sharp is quoted in The Times as saying, “The notion of

doing nothing but spending time in each other’s company has, in a way, become a lost art,” to be replaced by volleys of texts and tweets.

To have a friendship with someone has several requirements. First is time. It takes time to understand the other person and to trust that person enough to let him or her understand you. So trust is another requirement. Lucky are those who have friends from elementary school or college, for those have withstood the test of time. Additionally those friends are witnesses to our lives as we are to theirs. That is a relationship to be treasured and not replaced, and it may be resumed even after years have gone by with no contact. Honesty is another. You have to be able to respond honestly to a friend, even if it is not what he or she wants to hear, and to receive the same in return.

But there is more. A close friend is one with whom you interact almost daily because you would otherwise miss the contact. That person is one whose sentences you could reliably finish because, to some

extent, you live within each other’s heads. That person is someone who, you absolutely know from prior evidence, has your back. And that is a person who knows and accepts your shortcomings even as you accept theirs because you protect each other’s vulnerabilities. I have only experienced that kind of friendship with one or two people because there isn’t enough time really to get to know that many people, however interesting they may seem.

Then there are perhaps four or six others with whom I maintain ongoing friendships. These are good friends whom I enjoy common ground with, and feel concern and affection for. These friends provide a support system and a social circle to which we all contribute. Others are more casual friends, dependent on circumstances, and they may move in and out of my world at any given time.

Friends and friendships are tested by crises. I have had my share, as have my friends, and we have been there for each other. We will be there again because we are best friends.

playing multiple sports in school, and how the golf outing helps with that.

“My kids are in the district and one plays football,” said resident John Treder. “This is good for the school. I think the better teams the high school can put out, like with more money to buy equipment and extra coaches, the greater things will be for the kids. It will bring [them] more spirit, you’ll get more people at the games. It gives them the tools to win.”

A representative from Endzone Sports, a Seaford-based football equipment store and proud sponsor of the event, was especially supportive of the team.

“We’re for Melville football,” said Anthony Polo, a representative with the organization.

“They have a good coach, nice people involved, and we’re excited for the kids. We’ll do anything for the kids. We want to give back to the school and make sure they’re wellequipped, well-supported in the program and encourage their extracurricular activities. It gives them something to look forward to.”

Beyond the football field, there’s a consistent overall feeling of unity among Three Village because of the team’s growing success.

Charlie Fernandez, coach of the girls’ varsity volleyball team at Ward Melville, wouldn’t have missed the outing for anything, extending his support for Boltrek and the team.

“The best thing that happens at Ward Melville is when we have a good football team,” said Fernandez. “It makes everything better for everybody. It just fires the school up, gets everybody excited. You start seeing all the green and gold around and as the coach of another team, it’s good for us, too.”
