New sidewalks, electrical signal installed at Gelinas JHS Additions address safety for students who walk By donna newman This fall, the street abutting the Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School will be safer for students who walk to school. The Brookhaven Town Highway Department is nearly finished installing sidewalks on Mud Road.

“I am grateful to have finally brought this project to fruition, as residents have been requesting additional sidewalks in the area for the last decade,” Brookhaven Superintendent of Highways Daniel P. Losquadro said.

“In 2014, a year after I took office, school district administrators requested a traffic study, while noting 118 students walked to and from Gelinas Jr. High School. Clearly, this pedestrian safety project was warranted.

“The entire project, which will include the paving of Mud Road, will cost $300,000 and help to ensure the safety of students and pedestrians,” Losquadro said.

The cost includes the sidewalks, retaining walls, a drainage system, a crosswalk and electrical signal work.

A decorative pole with flashing LED lights, activated by pushing a button, will enable pedestrians to halt traffic to cross the street.

Sidewalks were added in front of the school building and to the south. On the west side of Mud Road, sidewalks extend from the school to Brandywine Drive.

Previously, sidewalks had been installed in the fall of 2008 — heading north from the school and west along Christian Avenue to the spot where it meets Friends Road — to accommodate a blind child living in the neighborhood who walked that route to school.

The groundwork for the current project predated the formation of a grass-roots advocacy group called Sidewalks for Safety, founded by Annemarie Waugh in July 2015.

“It’s really wonderful that the town is putting in the sidewalk outside Gelinas!”

Waugh wrote in an email. “I hope the sidewalk will go all the way around the treacherous corner on Mud Road, so children walking to and from Gelinas will be safe.

I really hope the town will put in many more sidewalks, especially around all the schools and on the busy main roads, so we can have a healthy walkable community.”

“Annemarie has been very active in trying to get folks on board with helping improve walkability,” said Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket). “I think she is certainly working hard on raising awareness. I talked to her about what I did on Nicolls [Road]. I think most people don’t understand that they drive on roadways

that have different levels of government responsible for them.”

Waugh and her group have ramped up their awareness-raising efforts.

“More recently we have been engaged in educating local politicians, school officials and Three Village residents with a newsletter,” she said. “We attended Earth Day at Stony Brook University … and joined with Scout Troop 1911 to collect signatures at the shopping center on 25A.”

Gen. Washington’s intelligence was vital to his victory

By Beverly C. Tyler In 1778 America became a nation capable of going toe to toe with the greatest military power in the world.

The Continental Army emerged from the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge as a stronger and more confident fighting force, thanks in part to the drilling by Prussian Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben.

General Washington, who had suffered criticism and second-guessing by a number of his generals as well as by Congress, set about to taking a new look at both the battlefield and the political arena.

With two treaties negotiated in February 1778 between the French and the Americans, the war of independence suddenly changed from a battle between Great Britain and her colony into a wider world war. Washington realized that he would have the eventual support of both the French Army and Navy, and he would now have to use his army to harass the British, rather than confront them on the battlefield head-on.

The Continental Congress also moved another step forward with the endorsement of the Articles of Confederation, signed by seven colonies in July 1778 and by the remaining six colonies during the

following months. Also in July, the French fleet arrived, too late to attack the British fleet, as they abandoned Philadelphia and returned to New York.

Over the next three years the French fleet alternately attacked the British Navy and sailed to the Caribbean to protect their island resources. It was another two years before the promised French Army arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, to assist the Continental Army; and one more year before the French Navy defeated the British Navy and took control of Chesapeake Bay, trapping Lord Cornwallis and the British southern army at Yorktown.

In 1778, Washington also realized that he needed a more effective intelligence network to discover and analyze the plans and actions of the British Army and Navy, not just for his own use but also to assist the French Navy.

In early August of 1778, Washington received a letter from Caleb Brewster detailing the intelligence information he received from his many contacts on Long Island and his attacks on British and Loyalist ships on Long Island Sound (The Devil’s Belt) with his whaleboats and crews.

Washington replied with specific instruction on the details to be gathered including, “whether they are preparing for

the reception of troops and know what number of men are upon Long Island.” Because of Brewster, the vital water link between British territory on Long Island and the Continental Army in Connecticut was established. Washington now had in place one of the most important pieces of what was soon to become the Culper Spy Ring.

Washington recognized in Benjamin Tallmadge an officer who then enthusiastically put together the remaining personnel in the Culper Spy Ring. This was, however, only one important step in developing a spy network that kept the American and French forces informed.

Washington and his new intelligence chief Benjamin Tallmadge effectively employed many spies, both military and civilian, in all the theaters of war. As a young dragoon (cavalry) officer he was directly involved with the capture and turning of enemy spies.

The effectiveness of his spy networks was illustrated by the account of the head of British intelligence at the end of the war, Major George Beckwith, who reported, “Washington did not really outfight the British, he simply out-spied us.”

A 46-year-old man from Port Jefferson stole assorted power tools and a GPS device that he later pawned for cash from Class Act Auto Collision Inc. in Selden at about 2 p.m. on July 28, police said. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

On July 27 at about 6:30 a.m., a 24-yearold man from Coram was found in possession of mail from several homes in Port Jefferson Station, according to police. He also possessed marijuana. He was arrested and charged with 10 counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of marijuana.

License to damage property

At a home on Mount Vernon Avenue in Medford on July 29 at about 2 a.m., a 54-year-old man from Medford damaged the front and rear license plate covers on a 2007 Jeep, police said. He was arrested in Port Jefferson and charged with criminal mischief.

Port Jeff pot possession

On July 28 at about 10:30 p.m., a 19-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station possessed a marijuana cigarette while seated in a vehicle on Middle Country Road in Centereach, police said.

He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

Office supplies assault

At a shopping center on Middle Country Road in Coram on July 31 at about 5:30 p.m., a 38-year-old man from Medford threw a stapler at another man, causing a laceration and swelling, police said.

The victim was given stitches at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and the suspect was arrested and charged with assault.

Heroin arrest

A 27-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station and a 39-year-old man from Rocky Point possessed a bottle containing envelopes of heroin on Randall Road in Shoreham at about 1 p.m. on July 27, police said. The pair was arrested and each charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Pokémon went

While playing Pokémon GO on a cell phone on July 27 at about 10:30 p.m. on Arden Place in Port Jefferson, a complainant bumped into a man and dropped his phone, police said. An argument ensued between the two and approximately three other men. One of the men picked up the complainants phone and fled.

Tire slashed

A rear tire on a 2013 Jeep was slashed at about 4 p.m. on July 26 while parked outside of a home on Meadow Pond Circle in Miller Place, according to police.

Any yachts missing?

A kayak was stolen from the Stony Brook Yacht Club at about 3 p.m. on June 8, according to police.

Game on

A PlayStation 4 video game console and a controller were stolen after an unknown person entered a home on Ridgeview Place in Mount Sinai at about 4:30 p.m. on July 26 through a bathroom window, according to police.

Narcotics tip line fundraiser “It is unprecedented — the opioid crisis affects everybody,” Suffolk County Police Chief Stuart Cameron said over the sound of “Walking in Memphis” playing in the background. “We absolutely have to do something about it.”

The Emporium in Patchogue was filled with almost 600 people Thursday night, there to listen to Billy Joel and Led Zeppelin cover bands, who were there to raise money for SCPD’s Crime Stoppers’ fourmonth-old narcotics tip phone line, 631852-NARC, which has already received nearly 900 tips — so much that the SCPD added detectives to investigate leads.

The original Suffolk County Crime Stoppers tip line generated a lot of helpful leads, Cameron said, but residents did not realize they could use the number to call in narcotics-related ones.

Now, narcotic search warrants are up 100 percent this year, he said, and the amount of reward money given to those who called in tips leading to an arrest was higher than it had been in the past 20 years.

The benefit concert raised $55,000 in one night, all of which funds rewards. Donations are the sole way rewards are funded.

Samuel “Sandy” Pearlman — who may or may not have inspired the classic “Saturday Night Live” skit about the song “Don’t

Fear the Reaper” — had a fever for living the creative life. The former Setauket resident, Stony Brook University alumnus, and celebrated record producer-lyricist-executive died last week in California at 72. His friends remember a man whose imagination raced ahead while urging everyone else to keep up.

“He was a philosopher-king,” said Norm Prusslin, an SBU professor who first met him on campus in 1969, when Pearlman was managing a local band he called Soft White Underbelly. In this bunch of guys he met at his father’s pharmacy in Smithtown, Pearlman found musicianship that could turn his stories and poems into records. He loved to write about astrology, architecture, mythical figures and all manner of futuristic things, Prusslin recalled in an interview Sunday.

Hahn honors gymnast Cydney Crasa At a Suffolk County Legislature general meeting, Legislator Kara Hahn (DSetauket) said she was “excited” to honor Cyndy Crasa with a proclamation detailing her gymnastic achievement.

Crasa won the designation “All Around Champion” at the 2016 National Senior Gymnastics Invitational. Crasa, a recent Ward Melville High School graduate, competed with gymnasts from 13 states and achieved top scores in the floor exercise (9.8) and the balance beam (9.65). “Congratulations, Cydney,” said Hahn, wishing her the best of luck when she begins classes at George Washington University in the fall.

BOC bassist Joe Bouchard said it’s possible. “Sandy had that look, yeah,” he said with a chuckle, in a phone interview Monday — the leather jacket and the dark glasses worn indoors. More important was Pearlman’s success at pushing artists to go just a bit further. “He usually said he wanted more energy, during recording,” Bouchard said. “He was always very happy in the studio, excited to get the band to do their best.” Pearlman worked with other artists, producing the Clash’s breakthrough 1978 release “Give ‘Em Enough Rope.” He produced the Dictators — a punk band many consider to be a sonic link between the Stooges and the MC5 and bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols — and he managed Black Sabbath.

Pearlman owned and lived on and off in a house on Main Street in Setauket, a few doors down from the Emma Clark Library.

Prusslin said he had been hired to teach philosophy at SBU, plans that were curtailed by the cerebral hemorrhage Pearlman suffered in December of last year.

Longtime friends Robert Duncan and his wife Roni Hoffman saw Pearlman often. When asked how his friend might like to be remembered, Duncan said in a phone interview Monday that Pearlman was especially proud of “Imaginos.” The project started as a poem and turned into a song circle album. Although BOC played on it, “Sandy always referred to it as his ‘solo record,’” Duncan recalled. “I think he would say that was his crowning achievement, when that record came out.”

Pearlman was always “the smartest guy in the room,” Joe Bouchard said. “He knew that if you just do a pop song, it’ll be gone in a year. If you do a song with a little more depth to it, it’ll have some staying power.”

Sharon Dang is Jr. Volunteer of 2016 Stony Brook University Hospital has recognized Sharon Dang’s contributions to pediatric patients by naming her Junior Volunteer of the Year at the hospital’s annual Volunteer Luncheon held in July.

A Hauppauge resident, Dang began volunteering in 2013 and has since donated more than 300 hours to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. She engages pediatric patients in craft activities at bedside or in the playroom.

Child life specialists are impressed with Dang’s ability to put patients at ease with her delightful personality and excellent communication skills.

“Sharon exhibits great leadership and has a strong work ethic,” said child life specialist Michael Attard, “She is a professional and extremely mature young woman.”

oBITUARY Wanda Rose Drossel Wanda Rose Drossel, 85, passed away on June 27 at Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Hendersonville, N.C. She suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Wanda was born on Aug. 31, 1930, in Manville, N.J., daughter of the late John Majkrzak and Louise Garlevich. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Majkrzak and John Marshall, and a sister, Mary Majkrzak Wisniewski.

Wanda moved to Long Island in 1943.

She graduated from Setauket High School.

She married William F. Drossel in 1952 and they raised two daughters, living in Setauket for 35 years. In 1987, she retired from SUNY Stony Brook, where she was a senior purchasing agent, and they moved to Jacksonville, Vt. Ten years later, they moved to Hendersonville, where she lived the rest of her life. Wanda enjoyed the outdoors and traveling. She visited nearly all 50 states, including Hawaii and Alaska.

They toured Europe, the Caribbean and Costa Rica. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Hendersonville.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, William; brother Edwin Marshall; daughters Janet Bedson (Randy) of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Korraine Drossel (Kaymen) of Kohler, Wis.; and two grandchildren.

Stony Brook hoops player is larger than life Jameel Warney signs partially guaranteed deal with Mavericks

By Desirée Keegan Jameel Warney’s coaches used to say the player held a basketball like a bowling ball, cupping it with his hand and wrist when driving to the basket. He holds the ball a little differently now. He’s gripping it like an NBA pro.

After competing for the Dallas Mavericks’ 2016 Summer League team from July 2 through July 8, Warney, a 6-foot, 8-inch, 260-pound forward, agreed to a partially guaranteed deal with the team, which amounts to a training camp invite.

“I always have the utmost confidence in myself and know that if I play hard, I can do whatever I think I’m capable of doing,” Warney said. “When I play well and with a chip on my shoulder, I won’t be denied. It was great to know that I can play with this level of competition.”

During five Summer League appearances, he averaged 6.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals and one block per game. Dallas never ran offensive plays designed to get him open, yet Warney still shot 60 percent from the field.

“A lot of hard work went into this and it’s great to get some recognition, but I still have a lot of work to do,” he said. “I was happy that [Dallas] offered to bring me along to training camp, because it’s just another step toward ultimately making my dream come true.”

Although his form may not have been there from the start, the now former Stony Brook University star’s previous head coach, Steve Pikiell, said he’s proud of the player Warney has become. He noted the vast improvement he saw in Warney’s game over the 22-yearold’s four-year tenure with the Seawolves.

“Everyone says great hands, great this, great that, but he’s just a great kid,” Pikiell said.

“How he handled himself on and off the court was just awesome. He’s one of the best I’ve worked with in all of my 23 years of coaching.”

Warney began his basketball career as many young players across the country now do; in the Amateur Athletic Union.

“They didn’t think he was going to make it,” his mother Denise Warney said of her son’s coaches. “They said he was very lazy, and he was struggling with the drills and it seemed like something he wasn’t interested in. That all changed in two or three months.”

Warney learned from the experience and established a newfound passion for the sport. Within months, multiple AAU teams were interested in the abnormally tall middle school standout.

From there, Warney joined the varsity basketball team at Roselle Catholic High School in New Jersey. He graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,968 points, and averaged 17 points, 13.5 rebounds, four assists and 3.5 blocks per game as a senior.

“For Jameel, whether he’s well, sick or tired, he plays really well,” his mother said.

“He just loves the sport.”

At Stony Brook, he enjoyed much of the same success.

Warney graduated with more victories than any player in school history, and is the school’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and games played. The Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention also broke Stony Brook records for points in a season and in a single game when he scored 43 against the University of Vermont March 12.

Among all the records, Warney was also named American East Player and Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Seawolves to the American East Championship title and the first NCAA postseason berth in school history. He recorded 23 points and 15 rebounds in the first round of the tournament against the University of Kentucky on March 17, though the team fell 85-57.

“I saw something in him early on and I was able to help him bring that talent and ability out of him,” Pikiell said. “Mix that in with his hard work, and that’s how he’s gotten to the point he’s at. I know he can play at the NBA level. He has a skill set that everyone could use. He has a great motor, he’s a terrific rebounder, he has great hands, he’s a great passer, he has a tremendous physical ability and he’s an unselfish player. He has a great mind for the game of basketball, and those are attributes that bode well for him to be able to

Innkeepers have brought European bicycle culture to Long Island.

Marty and Elyse Buchman, who have been bicycling the world together for a decade, opened the Stony Brookside Bed & Bike Inn on June 1, located at 48 Main St., Stony Brook.

The couple set out to create a bed and breakfast that would cater to cyclists; providing not only sleeping space and a morning meal, but bike tour itineraries and even bikes, if needed, as well. Two months in, business has been much better than they expected.

“We’ve had people just looking for a place to stay — and that’s fine,” the husband said, indicating that not only cyclists have made up their clientele. A wedding party used Brookside for lodging recently.

The Buchmans have enjoyed bicycling in Europe because traveling by bicycle is considered normal there. It’s not just recreation; it’s a legitimate form of transportation, even for vacationers.

Their inspiration for a new kind of American bed and breakfast came during a 2010 bike tour of Italy. They booked a room in a “bike hotel” in Riccione on the Adriatic Sea. “Each day a guide came and took you for a different ride,” Marty said.

“The idea was that you came back to the same place; and didn’t have to worry about navigating [your way] around.”

The following week they had a similar experience at Lake Garda in the mountains of northern Italy, this time staying at a “sports hotel.”

By vacation’s end, they had all the inspiration needed to start their own business.

When they first saw the colonial revival building at 48 Main Street, next to the Stony Brook Grist Mill and across the street from the duck pond, they decided it was perfect.

Built in 1941 by renowned architect Richard Haviland Smythe in a beautiful natural setting, it had the added advantage of being within walking distance of restaurants and shops, a museum and historical

landmarks, a pond and nature preserve. It took perseverance, patience and negotiation skills, but they were able to purchase the house in 2014.

“This is an up and coming area for people to visit,” Marty said. “We’re always struck by how beautiful it is when we go on bike rides. People think they have to go out to the Hamptons or Sag Harbor. This is an undiscovered area. Just in the past year, [the opening of] the Jazz Loft and the Reboli Center, it seems like a lot of stuff is happening.”

The couple has done various kinds of marketing. The most effective, they said, was the simplest. A friend who runs a bike tour company put their business cards in every bike store in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

“It’s called a Bed and Bike Inn because it is a Bed & Breakfast, but oriented towards cyclists,” Marty said. “We have mechanical stuff. We have pumps. We have everything you might need for your bike. We have bikes, we have helmets; but most importantly, if you come to me and you say, ‘I want to do 20 miles and I want to see historic things,’ I’ve created a route book to provide just that. People can look through our ride book and decide what fits them.”

Elyse pointed out that each ride page gives you distance and elevation data in addition to the general route.

“Once a route is chosen, we print out turn-by-turn directions and we also provide a Garmin GPS which mounts on their bike and beeps when they have to make a turn,” Marty said. “I have lots of suggested routes — everything from 12 to 100 miles.”

Marty is a high school history teacher and said he would love to lead a local history bike tour. So far, though, no one has asked for that. Elyse noted that most guests have preferred self-guided rides, because then it becomes an adventure. “People tend to like to do that,” she said.

The house has three bedrooms, each with a private bath, and is open to guests seasonally. It will close Nov. 1 and reopen to guests on April 1 next year. For more information, call 631-675-0393.

The newest resident to call the Holtsville Ecology Site and Animal Preserve home is Melina, a chocolate skunk.

She will reside among the 100 nonreleasable or injured animals available for viewing, free of charge, at the Animal Preserve.

This one-year-old skunk was purchased as a pet outside of New York State, where she was spayed and de-scented. Since it is illegal to keep a skunk as a pet in New York, Melina’s owners realized they could no longer care for her and surrendered her.

Blue-green algae infestation is being addressed

High profile drug busts are increasing in frequency in Suffolk County, but the problem might require more creative solutions.

Complex problems call for creative solutions It is no secret that Suffolk County, New York State and the United States as a whole have a rapidly growing opioid, and especially, heroin problem on their hands. Suffolk County is frequently sited as one of the places in New York most susceptible to drug busts and overdoses. It is a complex problem that sometimes feels like plugging holes in a sinking ship with bubble gum to lawmakers and uniformed police officers charged with lessening the impact of drugs on the community.

To the Suffolk County Police Department’s credit, they haven’t shied away from trying some outside the box methods to combat heroin and opioid addiction. In April, Suffolk County Crime Stoppers launched an anonymous narcotics tip phone line to help enlist the community in rooting out drug users and sellers in their vicinity.

The tip line helped lead to the arrest, in June, of two brothers living in Mount Sinai who had a treasure trove of weaponry, bomb-making instructions, cash and drugs in their home. In July, 24 people were arrested in connection with a drug ring in Hauppauge that yielded four kilograms of heroin and fentanyl.

The success of the hotline, which has received more than 900 calls since its inception, proves that the onus is on all of us to do our part in alleviating our community’s drug problem.

The department hosted a benefit concert at The Emporium in Patchogue July 28 to raise money for rewards given to those who provide tips to the hotline that result in arrests, and it’s imperative that we continue to support this resource as it has already proven its worth. That’s not to say that without the reward money, you shouldn’t say something if you see something. Community members hold most of the power in their hands to help our officers in cleaning up our streets.

Until we as a community recognize that this is a problem for everyone, even if the overdosing teen down the street isn’t a family member, the bubble gum approach will not stop the ship from sinking.

We appreciate so much your interest in the Setauket Mill Pond. This fall, once our draft environmental impact statement is complete, we will begin the community dialogue for our plan to save the two ponds.

Our pond committee first assessed and called the community’s attention to this problem in 2007. Among our leadership is Chuck Hamilton, former regional enforcement official for the New York State DEC. Marian Wypyski, of Lockwood, Kessler & Bartlett of Syosset, an engineer skilled in pond and water projects, has been with us from the beginning, initially as a volunteer and now our paid project designer.

Many members of the community have contributed both money and the engineering and scientific expertise that our community has in abundance.

We have done root cause analysis, testing and analysis of the water and bottom material and have modeled a number of solutions. We have successfully lobbied for stormwater

runoff controls installed by the Town of Brookhaven Highway Department.

The root cause of the pond’s problem is largely mechanical. The ponds have filled in from their designed depth of 8 to 10 feet to as little as 12 to 18 inches.

Dredging is needed to restore the depth and combat the growth of invasive plants rooted in the shallow water.

We have struggled with the sheer volume of material to be removed and the high impact options for disposing and dewatering that material.

Last August’s devastating

microburst storm that destroyed our historic sycamore trees has created the opportunity to contain the dredged material on site.

The recent blue-green algae infestation is a symptom of the underlying problem of water that is too shallow, too warm and whose flow is impeded. In the next few months, we are looking forward to presenting to the community our draft environmental impact statement and plan for saving our ponds.

Let’s turn this stump into a Long Island icon Across from the Stony Brook railroad station, there’s a 40-foot-tall dead tree trunk.

Some consider it an eyesore and a hazard. Certainly the property owner looks at it as an expensive nuisance.

This may be a unique opportunity. Stony Brook has no central monument save Hercules, hidden down in the village. With a little imagination, the eyesore could be converted to a community totem making that 25A location a destination.

If rights to the tree could be acquired by donation, a community competition could be conducted to identify an appropriate subject for

the carving. The possibilities are many: Benjamin Tallmadge, George Washington,

a Stony Brook University student in cap and gown, university mascot Wolfie, Ward Melville, Joseph Reboli, or an abstract. Once the subject has been selected by community consensus, a competition to find a sculptor could be conducted.

We could join the Big Duck in Flanders, Winnie the Witch in St. James, the Smithtown Bull and Massapequa’s Big Chief Lewis with an iconic Long Island symbol. No matter what, it could be a lot of community fun with no contribution to global warming.

he media coverage of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump misses the point. While the race for president is about each person, the process, the scandals, the outrage and the stories that have a life of their own are not about the people — they are about the “brand.”

The question isn’t whether this reveals something new about Trump, the person. It doesn’t.

Surely anyone who has watched Trump over the last year or so realizes that his personal style, and the brand under which he is running for the highest office in the land, emanate from a scripted character.

He doesn’t let anyone question him or his brand without counterattacking. He has become a talking head in touch with his irascible side.

That may be what attracts people to him. There is no political correctness, a term he utters with such disdain that he says it as if he is standing at a podium filled with soiled diapers. The Trump brand

and playbook mandate that a best defense is a good offense.

If he’s offensive in the process, who cares? He doesn’t — and on the whole it appears many of his supporters don’t, either. He may have been right that he could shoot somebody in Times Square and not lose votes because outrageous words and actions are a part of his brand.

While I don’t agree with the slash-and-burn approach to the personal and political battles he fights, I recognize he’s probably not fighting for the little guy, the medium-sized guy or the big guy so much as he’s fighting for his brand. In a country where products and marketing are so inextricably intertwined, he is the best advocate for Brand Trump. Does being Trump prohibit him from saying “I’m sorry” or “I’m wrong”?

Those who hated him before have more ammunition in their battle with him. But what does he care? If they weren’t loyal to the brand and they weren’t his customers, he hasn’t

lost anything.

What will cause voters loyal to Brand Trump — or, put another way, those who are angry, fearful or resentful of the Clinton brand — to change their minds? How far can he go before some of those who identify with him decide he shouldn’t become president?

Does this pitched battle with the Khans — parents of a slain and decorated war hero — do for the Trump brand what the attack on the U.S. Army did for Sen. Joseph McCarthy? His pursuit of communists damaged and destroyed lives and careers in the early 1950s until Joseph Welch, the chief counsel for the Army, asked McCarthy in 1954 if he had “no sense of decency.”

For Brand Trump, decency doesn’t seem to have been a priority up until now. The question, however, is whether those buying the product will care enough about what he says or thinks to force a change in the brand before they, themselves, choose the other brand.

Bullied at a splendid Tanglewood concert

ullies come in all shapes and sizes.

And ages. I was reminded of that fact this past weekend, when a good friend and I went on our annual Tanglewood trip. Situated in the lush green Berkshire Hills in western Massachusetts, Tanglewood is a beautiful estate donated to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and since 1937 the BSO summers there and offers outdoor concerts to the public. There are many museums, theater, dance and of course good restaurants throughout the neighborhood, making for a fun-filled runaway weekend destination.

Between you and me

Thanks to the Port Jefferson ferry, Tanglewood is an easy two-and-a-halfhour drive from Bridgeport to one of the many motels that accommodate the thousands of visitors. We unloaded our suitcases on Friday night just in time to drive to our seats in the Shed to hear a Mozart piano concerto, followed

by Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. Content, we navigated the exiting traffic, which is admirably directed by the local police, returned to our motel room and slept.

After a leisurely breakfast, we made the scenic drive to Williamstown and enjoyed a couple of hours in the Clark museum. Their current exhibit, Splendor, Myth, and Vision: Nudes from the Prado, includes works by Titian, Rubens, Tintoretto, Brueghel the Elder, Poussin and many of the other greats of the 16th- and 17th-centuries.

These paintings would only have been seen at the time in what were called, “salas reservadas.” These were special, hidden rooms for select audiences, because to display nude bodies was considered sinful and contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church, also to the Spanish Inquisition. hand, the monarchs were charged with upholding the decreed doctrines and moral values, and on the other, they were the primary collectors of these treasured works of art — especially Philip II and his grandson Philip IV. We left the museum hurriedly to scoot down the road for the Williamstown Theater Festival premiere of “Romance Novels for Dummies” by Boo Killebrew. This delightful play, about two sisters, their relationship and their experiences dating in the big city, was worth the rush to get there.

Well acted and staged in a beautiful theater, the play ended just in time for another rush down Route 7 to our seats at Tanglewood.

And this is when the bullying began.

We were seated near the front, and I began chatting with the man to my right. He told us he was from Maryland and even tried to help me open a container. But his arm completely covered the narrow armrest between us. I laughingly asked him if he had siblings and therefore had learned to share. I suggested we each take half the armrest for our elbows and demonstrated.

He had an empty seat next to him,

which I assumed he had paid for since there were no other empty seats anywhere around us. He responded that I should have bought two seats. Then, when the music began, a violin concerto by Sibelius featuring spectacular soloist Augustin Hadelich, he actually pushed my arm off the armrest and jabbed me in the ribs with his elbow.

It’s hard to know what to do in such a situation. People around us were entranced by the magnificent music and I wanted to be, too. But I alternated between being absorbed and being discomforted by the man splayed out beside me. I strained to lose myself in the music, and when it ended I considered explaining my plight to the nearest usher. I didn’t want to cause a scene in one of my “happy places,” yet I clearly couldn’t handle the problem.

How frustrating. Almost unwillingly, I approached a volunteer usher, who couldn’t help me directly, but he did bring me to a person in authority. That gentleman promptly changed our seats to what turned out to be an even better location, from which we thoroughly enjoyed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.

Beauty washes away ugly every time.
