Bomb scare at East Setauket shopping center

By DoNNA NewmAN A package that was left near a donation box in East Setauket caused a stir last week.

Suffolk County police were called to the Three Village Shopping Center on Route 25A in Setauket at 7:50 a.m., July 21, to evaluate a suspicious package left outside a donation box in the parking lot, according to police.

Sgt. Walter Langden said the item found in the lot appeared to consist of a wooden clock with wires connected to what might have been sticks of dynamite.

Langden said it looked real, and SCPD emergency services were called in to evaluate the device.

The sergeant reported that a passerby had seen it and went into Starbucks, where a 911 call was made. Starbucks was evacuated

and yellow police tape was used to close off the entire parking area.

Police said they were working to identify the person who initiated the call.

Lt. Kevin Burke said the item looked like a legitimate threat. It was taken into an emergency services van, where police officer and bomb technician Toby Monaco Xrayed the device and determined it was not a hazard. Burke said it

was most likely a decorative item discarded at the donation bin.

Multiple departments responded to the call, including the Setauket Fire Department.

“We were here for backup support for the police department,” assistant fire chief, Paul Rodier, said at the scene. “It was more precautionary, for safety.”

Jewish Summer Festival at West Meadow Beach draws a crowd By donna newman More than 500 people stopped

by West Meadow Beach last Wednesday evening for the threehour Jewish Summer Festival.

Entertainment included an acrobatic performance by Cirquetacular Entertainment, the music of Israeli singer Sandy Shmuely, face-painting and a moon bounce for the children.

That and a kosher barbecue dinner with all the fixings were part of the lure, but the bigger enticement was the camaraderie and friendship the festival offers.

The festival is a creation of Chabad at Stony Brook, and is co-directed by Rabbi Motti and Chaya Grossbaum.

“Seven years ago,” said Rabbi Grossbaum, “I was looking for a way to bring the community together for a public celebration of Jewish life, pride and future here in Suffolk County.” Now in its seventh year, it has become a midsummer classic event that many people look forward to.

The festival has grown every year, he said, gathering new partiers and sponsors as well.

Shapiro discovered the festival last year and brought her family again this year. Her three children played in the sand, sampled the food and swayed to the sounds of Shmuely’s guitar.

Steve Zalta of Holbrook attended with nine members of his family, including his two young grand-

daughters who, he said, danced away to the Hebrew music.

The 63-year-old sales rep of Syrian descent moved to Long Island from Brooklyn 30 years ago. He said at first, he used to go back to Brooklyn for Jewish content and connections; now, he has found outlets where he lives.

“We’re all one family,” he said in general. Of the summer event, in particular, “It’s a way for the children to see their heritage.”

Rabbi Grossbaum thanked the crowd for attending, and acknowledged the sponsors for helping make the night a success and bringing the community together. In fact, that’s what drew Elyse Buchman of Setauket to the festival for the second time.

“It’s very community-based,” she said. “No matter what temple you’re affiliated with—or none at all—you get together as a community and share in a good

time. There are not a lot of places where you can do that.”

Buchman and her husband Marty are owners of the Stony Brookside Bed & Bike Inn, which opened in June and focuses on bike tours. She pronounced the North Shore “full of history and beauty that often falls under the radar.”

The icing on the festival cake was, as Shapiro noted, a very beautiful sunset, “one of the best on Long Island.”

Help is on the way, as President Barack Obama (D) signed a multibillion dollar bill into law this week that takes aim at the growing drug abuse problem facing many North Shore residents and families.

The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 is an $8.3 billion plan to fight drug addiction in the United States, with a significant amount of funding for prevention and treatment.

Obama said in a statement last Friday though, that he feels the bill could have gone further with funding for prevention.

“This legislation includes some modest steps to address the opioid epidemic,” he said. “Given the scope of this crisis, some action is better than none.” However, Obama was critical of the amount of money allotted for treatment options.

CARA funding includes $160 million for the expansion of medication-assisted treatment options, including grants that will be awarded to state, local and tribal governments to provide opioid abuse services.

These grants will help fund programs that could expand treatment alternatives to incarcerations — with consent of attorneys and participants — for individuals who meet the program’s criteria.

Funding will also help develop, implement and expand prevention programs and training for first responders to administer opioid overdose reversal drugs, like Narcan. It will also fund investigations of unlawful opioid distribution activities.

Obama said he is committed to ensuring that support continues for individuals and families who are struggling with drug addiction.

“I have heard from too many families across the country whose lives have been shattered by this epidemic … I’m going to continue fighting to secure the funding families desperately need,” he said. “In recent days, the law enforcement community, advocates, physicians and elected officials from both sides of the aisle have also joined in this call.”

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), who is a co-sponsor of the bill, has been vocal about asking the Senate and the president to pass the bill, after it went through the House of Representatives with a bipartisan vote of 407 to 5 in mid-July. It was passed by the Senate with a bipartisan vote of 92 to 2 the following week.

“Our communities and families on Long Island have been severely impacted by the rise of prescription drug abuse and the growing epidemic of heroin, and I will continue working with local elected officials, law enforcement, health professionals, community groups, parents, concerned residents and those in recovery to discuss and develop a more localized solution to address this crisis by increasing treatment and recovery services, education, and stopping the influx of illegal substances,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Steve Chassman, executive director of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, said the law is “arguably the most comprehensive bill” out there concerning the combat against drug abuse.

“It is heavy in education, prevention and treatment,” he said. “We are not just going to incarcerate our way out of this. [CARA] deals with this crisis as the crisis is.”

Chassman has attended multiple drug forums, prevention talks and community meetings on this growing problem, and said the new law is “the culmination of so many families that had to lose loved ones over the last several years.”

Second annual Culper Spy Day brings history to life

By Talia amorosano On Saturday July 23, the second annual Culper Spy Day was held, an event dedicated to celebrating the Three Village community’s unique history as the site of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring.

The day is created through a collaboration of many organizations, including Tri-Spy Tours, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, the Three Village Historical Society and Stony Brook University special collections.

The Culper Spy Ring was a secret group that provided General Washington with the information needed to defeat the British during the American Revolution.

Landmarks related to the Spy Ring and its members are plentiful throughout the area.

Historic landmarks include Brewster House, considered the oldest house in the Town of Brookhaven; Setauket Presbyterian Church, behind which loyalists were housed in tents during the Revolutionary War; and Patriot’s Rock, the location where artillery officer Caleb Brewster set up his cannons to fire upon an area around the church in which the

British had established a fort.

Attendees at the event witnessed battle preparedness demonstrations led by uniformed soldiers on the Village Green, received guided tours of historic buildings, interacted with interpreters dressed in historical garb, and heard colonial music on the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library lawn.

Local historian Bev Tyler was dressed as Abraham Woodhull and was posted adjacent to the carriage shed on the grounds of Caroline Church. He told visitors about the school house that used to stand where the carriage shed is located today.

“I found people incredibly interested,” he said. “I met people from Florida, Georgia, California and other places, who made special arrangements to be here on this special day. Everyone was enthusiastic about the day and all the things they got to see.”

From history lessons to interactive demonstrations to realistic props and informational pamphlets, Culper Spy Day truly was an event for the whole family and attracted visitors of all ages.

Black Lives Matter banner temporarily removed

By Donna newman The Black Lives Matter banner that was affixed on July 3 beneath the sign identifying the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Nicolls Road was removed July 24.

Eileen and Sol Hummel, owners of the Imagination Pre-School, which has rented space in the fellowship for 20 years, discouraged its placement when they were first told it would go up.

Eileen Hummel said she responded to the notification with an email that simply read, “It’s going to hurt our business.” She said she made several subsequent requests to have the banner removed, including forwarding emails received from parents expressing dismay.

“The safety of the children is the most important thing for us,” Hummel said. She said police officers whose children attend the school were upset about the banner, and others were concerned about safety at the school because the message has created a heated debate nationwide in recent months.

The timing of its placement, shortly before the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, and the subsequent shootings of

police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, intensified the controversy surrounding the banner.

“We hoped to have a discussion with the community about the need for reform in police practices,” said Peggy Cohee, a member of the fellowship’s Racial Concerns Committee. “We feel it’s a social justice issue, not an antipolice issue.”

Concerned about the possibility of legal action against the fellowship, Cohee said its board of trustees decided to remove the banner temporarily, pending a discussion among the entire congregation.

“I don’t think this is finished yet,” Hummel said. “The fellowship informed us they are having a community meeting.” She was told the preschool parents would be invited to attend.

“I’m not against the church,” Hummel said, “I’m against the banner.” She thought they should move it inside the fellowship hall.

Hummel’s response to the banner was “all lives matter,” according to Cohee. “While we agree [with Hummel], our concern is that we can truly say that only when it applies to everyone.”

Police Blotter Incidents and arrests, through July 23 Packing heat

A 43-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station pointed a gun at two men at his home on Huron Street at about 3 p.m. on July 23, police said. He was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree menacing with a weapon.

Lock up your bikes

On July 23 at about 11 p.m., a bicycle was stolen off of the porch of a home on Old Coach Road in East Setauket, police said.

Throw and flow

At about 3 a.m. on July 23, a 24-year-old man from South Setauket threw a bottle toward the front of a restaurant on Arden

Place in Port Jefferson, and then urinated on the building, police said. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Bikes ride off

Two bicycles were stolen from outside of an apartment building on Piedmont Drive in Port Jefferson Station at about 11 p.m. on July 23, according to police.

The glass door at the Port Jefferson Post Office on East Main Street was damaged at about 5 p.m. on July 22, police said.

One of two bank robbers caught

by Alex petroski Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit have made an arrest in connection with one of the two robberies at TD Bank on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station which occurred in a fourday span between June 30 and July 3.

Michael Dublar, 33, who is homeless, was arrested July 20 and charged with thirddegree robbery in connection with the July 3 incident. At about 11:15 a.m., police said Dublar entered the bank and handed a teller a note demanding cash. The teller complied and Dublar fled on foot, according to police. Dublar was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, and had an outstanding Islip Town warrant, police said. He was held overnight at the 6th Pre-

cinct and arraigned the next day at 1st District Court in Central Islip, police also said.

The pattern was very similar to the incident that occurred four days earlier.

The first suspect, who police are still hoping to identify, entered the bank at about 2:15 p.m. on June 30. He is described as a white male in his 30s, is about 6 feet tall with a thin build, brown hair and a goatee, according to police. At the time of the incident he was wearing a long-sleeve flannel shirt, blue jeans, dark colored shoes, a baseball hat and sunglasses. Police said the teller complied with the demand and the man fled southbound through the parking lot toward Broadway, east of Old Town Road.

The bank is located a few hundred feet from Christ Church United Methodist of Port Jefferson Station.

B’haven Town collecting school supplies The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Back to School Supply Drive began on Monday, July 25 and runs through Friday, August 26. Collection centers are located in the lobby of Town Hall at One Independence Hill in Farmingville and the Highway Department Facility located at 1140 Old Town Road in Coram.

The Youth Bureau is requesting donations of pens, calculators, backpacks, notebooks, lunch boxes, folders, glue, binders and more.

The supplies will be distributed to needy families who might otherwise not be able to provide them to their children before school begins.

Last year, the Youth Bureau was able to collect enough supplies to help more than 1,500 children prepare for school.

Additional collection bins may be found at Astoria Bank branches throughout the month of August, where donations will be given to children in Brookhaven and throughout Long Island.

INTERFACE is a partnership between good corporate neighbors and the Town of Brookhaven, united in a common effort to provide help to Brookhaven’s less fortunate residents. PeoPle Mickey Martin and Lucy named senior volunteers of the year Stony Brook University Hospital has named Mickey (Michael) Martin and his pet therapy dog Lucy as the Senior Volunteers of the Year in recognition of their dedicated volunteer service to the hospital.

Martin was honored at the hospital’s annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, held July 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Stony Brook.

Ronkonkoma resident Mickey Martin and his Labrador retriever Lucy began their service in 2008 and have since donated nearly 500 volunteer hours.

Martin is a part of the hospital’s pet

therapy team, and Lucy is certified by Therapy Dogs International.

Martin has spent the majority of his time visiting with patients in the Children’s Hospital and participates in special events such as Bring our Children to Work Day. He is always willing to come into the hospital on his days off from volunteering if a patient has been identified as needing an extra special boost.

Martin and Lucy’s wonderful service to the hospital has recently been featured on News 12 Long Island and FIOS1 News.

For one hockey player, the ideal situation chose him.

East Setauket native Erik Burgdoerfer has finally earned his chance to play in the National Hockey League, but what makes his situation unique is that the Buffalo Sabres — the first team to ask him to sign an NHL contract — happen to play in his extended family’s hometown.

“I would go to Sabres games as a kid — I have a big, extended family, and they’re out of their minds,” his mother Jane Burgdoerfer said. “We’re all huge Sabres fans. This is the biggest thing that could ever hit Buffalo.”

The newly signed defenseman will have a built-in fan base when he first hits the ice in Buffalo.

“We were sitting at the table talking about how it would be great if he was at opening night against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 13, and we were counting and talking to people who would go. We would need upwards of 65 tickets,” Erik Burgdoerfer’s uncle Larry Catalano said, laughing. “And this was just literally within the first hour of us talking about it.”

The news came July 21, when the Sabres announced they signed Burgdoerfer to a one-year, two-way deal. This means that the 27-year-old can be sent between the NHL and the American Hockey League without having to clear waivers, which gives the team flexibility.

“I’m very happy to be joining the organization there and it’s an added bonus that my family is around there,” the player said. “I’m in a new setting now, but I just want to continue trending up, and hopefully with a little more hard work, I can reach my goal of playing in the NHL. But until I get those games, I’m not done yet.”

After graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he started as the

There, he had one of his most successful seasons when he put up a careerbest 11 goals and 22 points in 67 games and, as a captain, led the team on a 16-game run through the Kelly Cup playoffs, which is the longest playoff run in team history.

His head coach with the Condors, Troy Mann, left for the Hershey Bears, the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, and took the player along with him.

“He’s a real hard-working character kid, and I thought he had some good tools in terms of being able to climb the ladder,” Mann said.

“When I got the head coaching job at Hershey,

I felt that if we were going to sign depth players for us, I preferred players I either coached against or knew personally, and I was pretty adamant about getting Burgy under contract.”

According to Mann, his defenseman was excellent in training camp, though he was sent down to South Carolina to play for Washington’s East Coast Hockey League affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays. Mann said as soon as Burgdoerfer was recalled to Hershey, the rest was history.

“He became a vital part of our team and we’re very sad that we’re losing him for this upcoming season,” he said of the 6-foot, 2-inch 210-pound defenseman who recorded 20 points off six goals and 14 assists, and 59 penalty minutes in 74 games. Burgdoerfer also added four assists and 18 penalty minutes in

21 playoff games for the Bears, who reached the Calder Cup finals for the 20th time. The team lost, but has won 11 championships.

“I put an emphasis on how much that experience has meant to me,” Burgdoerfer said of playing with the Bears. “My development in my career that’s led to this point — a lot of that has happened in the past two years.

A couple of playoff runs and a great coaching staff have made for a great place for me to grow as a player and a person.”

He will likely begin the season with the Rochester Americans, Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, unless he makes the NHL squad out of training camp, but his continued dedication to the sport has also helped him reach a new level.

“He continued to follow his dream like nobody I’ve ever seen before,” his mother said. “I don’t know anybody that’s worked harder for their goal. His focus and determination has been unwavering.”

She also said she believes her son is a goalkeeper’s dream on the blue line.

“He’s not a flashy player,” she said. “He’s the guy that gets the job done and that every goalie loves because he’s very protective.”

Mann is looking forward to seeing how his now former player progresses. He said he knows that Burgdoerfer was at the point in his career where he really wanted an opportunity to play in the NHL, and is glad to see he found that with the Sabres.

“He’s very well-rounded,” the coach said.

“I think that one of the things you need to be able to do playing today’s game is skate, and I think he skates very well for a big man. He has that physical component to him, very strong, his stick positioning and stick work is much improved over the three years I’ve coached him, and he’s just a warrior-type player where his will to win is better than a lot of players.

I’m real happy for him. I wish him well and really hope he sees some games in the NHL this year.”

SBFF opening night awards

On opening night, Scottish actor Brian Cox, an Olivier and Emmy award-winning star of “The Carer,” received the Stony Brook Film Festival Career Achievement Award for his work in films, television and theater. In “The Carer,” Cox, perhaps best known for the Jason Bourne films, soars in his role as an aging lion of the theater who has isolated himself and bullied his caregivers.

Cox is an accomplished Shakespearean actor, who spent seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Britain’s National Theatre, where he gained recognition for his portrayal of King Lear. He won an Olivier award for his role in “Titus Andronicus” with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He has appeared in dozens of films and is best known for roles in “The Bourne Identity,” “The Bourne Supremacy,” “X-Men 2,” “Red” and “Braveheart.” Among his many roles on television, he won an Emmy for his portrayal of Göring in “Nuremberg.”

Cox is a patron of the Scottish Youth Theatre, “for and by” young people. Among many

accolades, in 2002 he was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

The director of “The Carer,” János Edelényi, was presented with the coveted opening night trophy. The film was selected from more than 2,000 entries to open the 21st Annual Stony Brook Film Festival, presented

by Island Federal Credit Union. The Thursday evening screening on July 21 had 800 film festival patrons in attendance.

Multiple parties, but one nation Although America’s two major political party conventions will be wrapped up by the end of this week, for many in this country, it seems as if there are four party conventions coming to a close.

If there is one thing Democrats and Republicans share at the moment, it’s the fact that many people feel like outsiders in their own party.

Since the start of the primaries, many traditional conservatives have had trouble accepting presidential candidate Donald Trump (R) as one of their own. On the first day of the convention, some state delegates staged a walkout to protest against Trump. Not only do voters and delegates feel this way — noticeably missing from the event were former Presidents George Bush senior and junior, as well as former presidential candidates John McCain and Mitt Romney. Romney has even gone so far as to hold press conferences to make clear his disdain for Trump and the direction he is leading the party.

Democrats have their own unity issues. After WikiLeaks exposed thousands of Democratic National Committee emails last week, the party seems more divided than ever. #BernieorBust voters within the party have said they will never vote for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (D), staying true to their support for former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (D) — despite his efforts to unite his supporters behind Clinton.

The divides in both parties are clear, but what should be more clear than anything else is that four months from now, this country will have to unite behind a newly elected president.

2016 has already shown us the major obstacles and issues facing America, both at home and abroad.

Our electoral system is not perfect; this election season has shown us that. But it is our system, for better or worse.

We’ll need to accept who won, who lost, and most importantly, unify around the winner. The reality is, regardless of who wins, a large contingent of voters will be saddled with a commander in chief they disdain.

It is rare to find a candidate who is everything Americans in one party want, let alone both. Speaking to the #NeverTrump and #BernieorBust voters specifically, there comes a point when you need to decide which candidate represents you the most. Excluding yourself from the process gets you, and the nation, nowhere.

Trump or Clinton will move into the White House in March 2017, and it would be best to vote for someone who represents some of your views, as opposed to none of them, or simply not voting at all.

As the election season continues on, it’s important to remember we all need to unite again as one country once the final ballots are cast and the polls are closed.

to the editor: Once again, The Village Times-Herald gives a half-page to Jim Soviero’s rambling Tea Party musings.

Mr. Soviero certainly shares Donald Trump’s penchant for “innocent hyperbole” when he says that a federal district court judge and an appeals court in New York State ruled that “setting even a limit of seven bullets violated the Second Amendment.”

In fact, both judge and court upheld the SAFE Act and its ban on both semi-automatic assault weapons and

magazines containing more than ten bullets, but said that leaving three spaces empty was unreasonable.

Who “couldn’t be bothered to learn” the facts?

On his only other substantive point, he first sets up an incredible equation between the Nazis, who controlled the largest and strongest economy in Europe and a population second only to the USSR — and the ragtag ISIS which,

while certainly as bloodthirsty as the Nazis, controls a shrinking portion of Syria and Iraq with 10,000-20,000 jihadis; no thinking historian makes that equation.

Further, apparently, if like President Obama you don’t want to carpet-bomb a largely innocent, conquered population, you must be as abject an appeaser as the supporters of the 1938 Munich Agreement with the Nazis (including, I should add, the America First Committee).

A major problem with minor party cross endorsement to the editor: Several weeks ago I wrote about some of the problems with New York election law, which allows cross endorsements across party lines. We are about to see a very public demonstration of one of the major problems with minor party cross endorsement.

It was reported today (July 18) that Dave Calone intends to leave the Independence Party line on the November ballot by accepting a nomination for judge somewhere in New York.

This will give the leadership of the Independence Party the ability to give the Independence Party line of the ballot to either Anna Throne-Holst or Lee Zeldin.

It was reported that leaders of both the Republican and Democratic parties were

optimistic about receiving this Independence Party line on the ballot.

Since in the past several Congressional elections several thousand votes were cast on the Independence party line, the choice being made by the person (or persons) who have the legal ability to determine which candidate will be on the Independence Party line is equivalent to the votes of thousands of we ordinary voters.

This is extremely troubling and antidemocratic.

The temptation for the offering/accepting of a quid pro quo for this ballot line must be immense.

The doctor considers the curious case and decides he’s “too tents.”

While you may have heard the homophone joke, you may also know that the New York Yankees are in a similar position: dealing with two tenses.

They are stuck between trying to do what they can to win now and making trades

or should we allow ourselves the opportunity to rebuild and move toward a better future by adding some education, by moving to a new house, getting a new job, or starting or ending a relationship?

We generally live in the present, because that’s what is wanted by our ids — the impulse-driven parts of our psyches. We’re hungry, we want food. We’re tired, we want sleep.

We’re sick of hearing politicians who starred in reality shows turning the process into a reality show, we change the channel.

These Yankees, with their highpriced talent, glitz and glamor, and the endless celebration of their own history, have mastered the art of staring in the mirror and liking what they see. The team could easily change its name to “The Narcissi.”

Anyway, can, should, will the Yankees pull the trigger on a host of deals that may replenish a farm system, sacrificing the all-important present for a future that may not produce a better team than the

mediocrity they’ve demonstrated?

I don’t have a crystal ball and I don’t rely on the position of the stars, the moon or the tides to make decisions for my favorite team or for my life. Early this week the flamethrowing rent-a-closer on a oneyear deal with the Yankees, Aroldis Chapman, was traded to the Chicago Cubs for a four-player package headed by stud shortstop prospect, Gleyber Torres.

How much further they can, or should, go in swapping assets, repositioning the team or realigning their strategy is a favorite game of the endless sports pontificators in the New York area, who always seem to know so much better than everyone else until a player or a team proves them wrong.

From my perspective, the Yankees aren’t a contending team. They are, as the old saying goes, exactly what their record indicates. Early this week, they were a .500 team, which means they win as many games as they lose. In the incredibly competitive American League East, where

talented teams like the Red Sox overcome their own pitching flaws with sensational hitting, a win-one, lose-one Yankees team isn’t inspiring confidence.

Of course, the fun of life — and all these games — are the many unpredictable parts. Would anyone have expected the Mets to become a World Series team last year? There are no guarantees, which is what makes any present sacrifice a leap of faith.

We, the fans and the team, might not get something better by making a change.

From my armchair, however, I would plant a “for sale” sign in front of this team with a declining A-Rod, a shadow-of-himself Mark Teixeira and a smoke-and-mirrors starting pitching staff. No one is going to buy Teixeira or A-Rod, but the scales seem to be leaning toward an investment in the future. Now, if the never-give-up Yankees can change course on a faltering season, maybe we can consider moves that might help us win in the future.

Exploding cigar bombs and more in historic terrorist attacks

ne hundred years ago this week, The New York Times has reported, the worst terrorist attack on the United States until 9/11 occurred in New York Harbor. Manhattan and Jersey City, damaged the skirt and torch of the Statue of Liberty, shattered the stained glass windows in St. Patrick’s Cathedral and windows in Times Square, shook and possibly damaged the Brooklyn Bridge, threw people out of their beds and was heard as far away as Philadelphia and Maryland.

On that fateful night, some 2 million pounds of small arms and artillery ammunition were on the island, along with 100,000 pounds of TNT on Johnson Barge No. 17. Initially small fires broke out along the mile-long pier, and while some of the guards fled, fearing explosions, others attempted to fight the fires and called the Jersey City Fire Department for help. The first and largest explosion, at 2:08 a.m, produced a rain of bullets and fragments, followed by mists of ash that made fighting the fires impossible; and the smaller fires burned for hours, causing explosions throughout the night.

While hundreds were hurt, surprisingly only a few people were killed, including a policeman in Jersey City, the railroad chief of police, the barge captain and an infant thrown from

Two guards were quickly arrested for having triggered the disaster by lighting smudge pots on the pier to keep away the ever-present mosquitoes until it was realized that the pots were too far from the fires to have been the cause. Further investigation, which continued for years, identified the culprits as German agents who were trying to stop the shipments.

Until early 1915, the neutral United States was able to supply any nation with arms, but after the blockade of Germany by the British Royal Navy, only the Allied forces could purchase arms. Imperial Germany sent secret agents to the U.S. to obstruct production and delivery, and some of them caused havoc and civilian panic in the ensuing years. An effective weapon was the “cigar bomb” that was silently attached to the hulls of departing American munitions ships and only exploded after the vessels were well out to sea. Many ships, with their cargo and crew, were lost that way.

President Woodrow Wilson was desperately trying to cling to neutrality before the coming, tightly contested election against Charles Evans Hughes,

chief justice of the Supreme Court and former New York governor. Wilson, as the president who had kept the nation out of war, initially refused to recognize the explosions as the work of the Germans. But after the election indisputable evidence forced his hand, and by early 1917 he prepared the country for war against Germany.

After the war, the railroad sought payment for damages under the U.S.German Peace Treaty (1921) signed in Berlin and, at last in 1953, an agreement was reached for $50 million to be paid to the railroad. Dozens of railroad cars, six piers and 13 warehouses had simply disappeared into a huge crater filled with water and debris after the first explosion. For practical purposes the island, with its causeway to the mainland, had disappeared.

Final payment was not made until 1979. In today’s currency, damages are estimated at $500 million.

Landfill projects through the years time have enabled what little was left to be incorporated into Liberty State Park. A single plaque there tells the tale of the largest terrorist attack until our time.
