Suffolk County’s 9th annual Jewish Summer Festival will take place Wednesday, July 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. at West Meadow Beach in Setauket.

Sponsored by Chabad at Stony Brook, the festival will feature live entertainment, a beachside kosher barbecue and fun for the whole family. two-story post-and-beam colonial building, remains original save for plumbing and electrical improvements,” Reuter said. “It features immense structural timbers, floor boards — 24 inches and more in width, wrought iron hardware, primitive window glazing and simple but robust interior architectural details. A massive central chimney serves multiple fireplaces on both floors. The main kitchen fireplace incorporates a rare beehive oven with arched brick opening.”

According to the TVCT press release, the house, which dates back to 1695 to 1705, occupies one of the earliest farmstead plots in the area. It was laid out along both sides of a freshwater creek that was dammed to create the Setauket millpond.

It is historically significant because it was the de-facto Brookhaven Town Hall during much of the 1700s due to successive Smith family members serving as town clerk. Timothy Smith occupied the house during the Revolutionary War, and it and the surrounding farm property remained in the Smith family until the death of Julia Sophia Smith in 1948. Forrest Bonshire, lived there from the 1960s to 2013, and the home was purchased by de Zafra from Bonshire’s estate to prevent it from being subdivided, and de Zafra was carefully restoring it before his death in October.

A local group has preserved a piece of history for future generations.

The Three Village Community Trust acquired the historic Timothy Smith House at 55 Main St., Setauket, July 12, according to a press release from the trust.

“Because of its long history, its connection to town government in Brookhaven, and its remarkable degree of preservation over its 300-year life span, the Smith House is a valuable acquisition,” the release read.

“The Three Village Community Trust is indebted to Robert de Zafra for acquiring it at the death of the previous owner, protecting it from being subdivided, and in so doing preserving the historic character of Setauket and this area’s contribution to the nation.”

In March, de Zafra’s widow, Julia, offered the house to the trust for a nominal price and will donate funds to help with continued restoration. According to the press release, de Zafra was a founding trustee of the Three Village Community Trust, and the Timothy Smith House, also known as the House on the Hill, has been recognized as a Brookhaven landmark and dates back to the early period of Setauket’s settlement starting in 1655.

Cynthia Barnes, president of the TVCT, said the trust will continue the restorations that de Zafra started and will be raising funds through contributions to the Robert de Zafra Restoration Fund and seeking grants. The house will be renamed the Timothy Smith-Robert de Zafra House. While the home will remain a private residence, Barnes said there are discussions about ways to make it available to the public periodically.

Robert Reuter, a TVCT trustee, said the house is “a treasure that figures prominently in our town’s earliest history” and he feels it offers an opportunity to interpret the best of design and craftsmanship in 18th-century colonial Setauket.

Legislature votes down funding for SCPD K-9 Unit facility

BY AMANDA PERELLI Republicans and Democrats in Suffolk County are having trouble getting on the same page.

Amid a greater fight over the issuance and ultimately failed vote on bond-seeking resolutions lumped together into an all or nothing proposal from the Democratic side in recent weeks, funding for several county initiatives is in a state of limbo, including plans to upgrade Suffolk County Police Department’s K-9 Unit facility in Yaphank. The bond was voted down as a stand-alone proposal at the July 17 Legislature meeting.

“This is unfortunately again, where we run into politics,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) said at a July 10 press conference at the facility.

“The funding for the new K-9 state-ofthe-art facility here is being blocked again by members of the minority caucus.”

The roof leaks in the current structure, the floor has holes in it, and the air conditioner and heating do not work properly, according to Bellone.

“I just wanted to note for the record once again that while I support the construction of this building I do still believe that we should be able to do the planning for this building in-house with [Department of Public Works] staff,” said Minority Leader and Legislator Tom Cilmi (R-Bay Shore) prior to the vote at the July 17 Legislature meeting. “A number of us, both on the Republican side and Democratic side toured the facilities. It’s clear that they need to be replaced, but we just believe that the planning for this can be done in-house.

Operating funds rather than spending $150,000 of borrowed money to outside contractors to do this work.”

During the press conference, Bellone and other county Democrats called for funding for a renovated, full-indoor kennel for training and to house these dogs when their handlers are away.

“The population of this county has grown over the years and as a result the size of our K-9 unit has grown over the years,” said Legislator and Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco (D-Patchogue). “We are housing far more dogs here now than we ever had, and we have to have appropriate facilities for these animals to be kept so that they can be in the top shape and top health, so they can do their job, which is important.”

The SCPD K-9 Unit currently has 22 dogs. Nearly 12 years ago, a more than 20-year-old Sachem school district trailer was transported to Yaphank as a short-term SCPD K-9 Unit housing facility, and it is still in use today, according to a press release from Bellone’s office.

“When it came time to vote for the resolution and fund this new facility, they voted against it,” Bellone said, referring to the Legislature’s Republican members. “So here it is, unbundled, a single, stand-alone bond. Earlier this year, we put that forward and they voted no.”

The Republican minority caucus wants the planning done in-house rather than borrowing to pay for the project, which, according to Bellone, would delay the project up to four years.

“We made it clear to police officials that we agree with building a new facility — that’s not the problem here, but what the county executive

is asking us for is to borrow $150,000 to pay an outside contractor to design a kennel,” Cilmi said last week. “We spend $250 million in public works every year, and we believe that somebody from public works, working with our police department, should be able to engineer that building. They’re in a donated shack basically right now, we don’t need a Taj Mahal here.”

Animal rights activist Sue Hansen attended the conference representing the local animal welfare and rescue organization Responsible Solutions for Valued Pets. She said the organization has been working with Suffolk County Legislator Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood), who is chairwoman of the county’s Public Safety Committee, on laws dealing with animals. Hansen said the organization is in favor of bonding to pay for the upgrades to the facility.

Residents on one cul-de-sac in Setauket and its surrounding streets aren’t putting out their welcome mats for potential future neighbors.

Smithtown-based Developmental Disabilities Institute is currently under contract to buy a house on Cynthia Court. DDI plans to use it as a residential home for six young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. On July 16, the nonprofit invited residents from Cynthia Court and Sherry Drive to an informational meeting at The Setauket Neighborhood House to allow them to familiarize themselves with the organization. Driving on drugs

Near the intersection or Routes 112 and 347 in Port Jefferson Station July 12 at about 12:30 p.m., a 29-year-old woman from Patchogue was allegedly seated in the driver’s seat of a running 2017 Hyundai with the car in drive and her foot on the brake, according to police. Police discovered she was operating the vehicle under the influence of a drug. She was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

Burglary streak

At Iglesia Fuente de Jacob Church on Bicycle Path in Port Jefferson Station between July 1 and July 3, a 58-year-old undomiciled man allegedly entered and left with property belonging to the church in his possession, according to police. He was arrested July 9 in Port Jefferson Station.

It was discovered he allegedly committed a similar offense at the same location between June 24-26, according to police.

He was also charged for allegedly taking property from a medical office on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station, and for allegedly taking property from The Meadow Club on Route 112 July 6, according to police. He was charged with four counts of third-degree burglary in total.

At Bahía Bar & Discotec on Main Street in Port Jefferson July 15 at about 4 a.m., two groups of people were involved in a dispute inside the establishment, which then made its way onto the street, according to police. During the incident two people were allegedly stabbed — one was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, while the other was treated for more serious injuries, that police also categorized as “nonlife threatening.” No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Kayak stolen

A kayak was stolen from a home on Main Street in Setauket July 14 at about 10 p.m., according to police.

A bottle of liquor was stolen from MarKay’s Wines & Spirits on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station July 14 at about 2 p.m., according to police.

Car damaged

At the Brookhaven Town marina parking lot on Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai July 14 at about 10 p.m., a dispute took place between two people, with one causing physical damage to the other’s car by punching and kicking it, according to police.

A 38-year-old man from Shirley allegedly screamed profane language while on North Country Road in Port Jefferson July 13 at about midnight, according to police.

While being questioned and issued a summons for disorderly conduct, the man allegedly verbally threatened a police officer, and while being placed under arrest, tried to prevent himself from being put in handcuffs, police said. He was charged with second-degree aggravated harassment and resisting arrest, in addition to the disorderly conduct summons.

Jeans were stolen from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket July 13 at about 2:30 p.m. About four hours later, several shirts were stolen from the same store, police said.

At about 3 a.m. June 1, a 19-year-old man from Farmingville allegedly punched someone in the face multiple times while on East Main Street in Port Jefferson, according to police. He was arrested July 10 and charged with assault. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

Cash and credit cards were stolen from within a 2017 Nissan parked on Oakland Avenue in Miller Place July 12 at about 10 p.m., according to police.

A 54-year-old man from Port Jefferson allegedly stole Craftsman pliers from Ace Hardware on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station July 15 at about noon, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny. Upon his arrest, he was also charged with a second count of petit larceny for allegedly stealing a barbecue grill from the same store July 8 at about 3:30 p.m., police said.

On April 24 at about 1 a.m., a 30-year-old woman from West Islip allegedly fired a shot from a handgun in the direction of a vehicle while another person was nearby, according to police. The woman allegedly also hit with a cellphone the same person, who required medical attention, police said. She was arrested July 10 in Selden and charged with assault and reckless endangerment.

A 62-year-old woman from Miller Place allegedly possessed prescription medication without a valid prescription in a public place while on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station July 14 at about 11 p.m., according to police. She was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Transportation accessibility evaluated in PJ Using public transportation in downtown Port Jefferson is no easy task, especially for those with vision, hearing or mobility impairments.

On April 17, Stony Brook University occupational therapy students evaluated the accessibility of the Suffolk County bus line, Long Island Rail Road and The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company ferry in downtown Port Jeff, for their capstone project. Richard Brenza, Paulina Chrostowski, Shirley Lin, Puja Rai, Eric Wong and Wendy York were the students conducting the evaluation. Their goal was to see how difficult it would be for people with various impairments to navigate from the ferry to the train station a mile-and-a-half south on Main Street. They worked with five Suffolk Independent Living Organization volunteers — a nonprofit organization dedicated to aiding the disabled live independently — with visual, hearing and or mobility impairments, and presented their report at Village Hall in a private meeting May 22, which included representatives from Suffolk County Transit. Trustee Bruce D’Abramo attended the meeting on behalf of the village.

“Port Jefferson village is right next to our campus, it’s basically a college town,” Lin said.

“Being that it is a place where a lot of us hang out, it was appropriate for us to see how accessible it is for individuals, or our classmates, who may have vision, hearing — any mobility impairments.”

The students received help in executing the evaluation from Pamela Linden, clinical associate professor, and Karen DeChello, clinical assistant professor — both of the occupational therapy program at SBU — and Amy Menditto, SILO’s NY Connects director.

“Our service learning projects are benefiting organizations and communities, rather than clinical practice,” Linden said.

Justin Ainsworth, outreach advocate at SILO, participated in the project alongside the other volunteers. Ainsworth has a power wheelchair and said he has no prior experience trying to ride the bus and was surprised he could.

“The [village] is fairly accessible, but there are always things that’ll make it easier,” Ainsworth said.

problem and asked themselves, “How would the visually impaired members cross the street alone?”

“I am a blind person who goes all over and for me to actually cross the street I have to put my hand up, put my foot out on the street and say ‘stop’ — and pray that they would stop so I could get to the other side,” said Marilyn Tucci, outreach and advocacy coordinator at SILO and one of the visually impaired volunteers.

The three-way intersection crossing from south to north on East Broadway adjacent to Main Street lacks a traffic stop light and audible walk signal, but the hurdles didn’t stop there.

The S61 Suffolk County Transit bus, which travels from the ferry dock to the Patchogue railroad station and back, stopped down the street from its posted location, creating an added obstacle for the group of 11, according to York.

“For us able bodies that are young, we can go to that bus that stops at a different place around the corner down the street,” York said. “People with mobility impairments or vision impairments or hearing impairments, it’s not as easy for them to run down the corner to where the bus was.”

The group arrived at the Port Jeff LIRR station, but struggled to board the train with ease as they had hoped, York said. They needed to track down the conductor and set up a ramp, which is the only way a person in a wheelchair can access the train.

“The gap that is in between the train car and the platform on the LIRR was, like, 8 inches and according to [Americans with Disabilities Act] standards it should be no

more than 3,” York said. “I was with someone who was visually impaired so I helped her cross that gap, but she had told me previously — when she was alone — that there was a gap like that and her foot actually fell in between the car and she was stuck for a minute, which is obviously scary if the train were to move and no one knew. Luckily it didn’t.”

The students recommended small changes in consistency in their final report, like adding visual and audible traffic announcements on which individuals can rely.

“I think the most eye-opening part about it was seeing how many flaws there are in the system that still need to be worked out,” Brenza said. “It’s a lot better than it used to be, but there’s still a long way to go.”

The students got the chance to present their findings and interact with people from different transportation organizations at the meeting at Village Hall. Members of Suffolk County Transit told them the best way for something broken to get fixed is to call the company line directly and report it, according to Wong.

“They wanted to understand why the problem occurred and wanted to fix it, so it wouldn’t happen at another time,” Wong said. “We learned that it is not entirely Port Jeff’s responsibly to make all of the changes.”

The six students graduated June 22, earning master’s degrees in occupational therapy. The volunteers said they were grateful for the students efforts and both groups said they hoped the findings would make a lasting impact on the community.

D’Abramo said at a public meeting June 4 he told the students and SILO representatives he was eager to hear their findings, and reassured them the village would be an advocate in helping to deal with the transportation agencies involved.

“I tried to give them an idea of how many different agencies we were dealing with here — the MTA, the ferry, New York State Department of Transportation and Suffolk County busing,” he said.

Former Setauket resident to appear in festival film One movie at the Stony Brook Film Festival this year will have some local flavor.

Not only were scenes from the film “Dean Darling” shot on Long Island, it features former Setauket resident Allison Frasca. The 26-year-old actor and 2010 graduate of St. Anthony’s High School plays Jaclyn in the movie, which was filmed at various locations throughout the Town of Smithtown including the train station, Short Beach and the Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts.

Additional scenes from the coming-of-age drama were filmed at Brooklyn’s Coney Island.

Written and directed by Calogero Carucci, the film, in addition to Frasca, features Douglas Towers, from Smithtown, Joel Widman, Theodore Bouloukos and D.C. Anderson.

“Working locally was really amazing,” Frasca said. “It felt really cool to film in places that I grew up around. Calogero Carucci is a fantastic talent with such a strong passion and vision. He knew exactly what he wanted with such detail and the result was a truly gorgeous film.”

According to Frasca, the film follows 20-year-old Dean Darling, who shortly after both his parents die in a car accident searches for truth through eccentric family members, old friends, erratically formed relationships and filmmaking.

Currently living in Manhattan and working in theater and film, Frasca has appeared in other movies including “Harvey’s Last Night on the Avenue,” “Neurotica,” “Toss It!” and “L.I.P.S.” More information about the actor can be found at www.afrasca.com.

HISTORY CLOSE AT HAND

Remembering the early days of Setauket’s post office My great-aunt Annie, Anna Louise Tyler (1863–1943) lived her entire life in the house I grew up in on the corner of Main Street and Old Field Road in Setauket. For more than 80 years, from about 1850 to 1931, the Tyler Brothers General Store stood on the same corner in front of the house close to the road. For all those years the Tylers also served as postmasters, and the post office was located in the general store.

Anna Tyler was appointed Setauket’s 11th postmaster Nov. 12, 1897, and she served the community until 1915. At the time of her appointment, she was 34 years old. She was the niece of Capt. Israel Bennett Tyler (1830–1895) who served as postmaster 19 years from 1870 to 1885 and again from 1889 to 1893.

In 1895, after the death of Israel Tyler, Capt. Charles Tyler, my great-grandfather, carried on the store until two years before his death, when he became ill and passed away June 12, 1899. From 1897 on, the post office and store were run by Annie and Corinne Frances Tyler, spinster daughters of Capt. Charles Tyler.

The mail was brought to Stony Brook and Setauket by the Long Island Rail Road.

For most of that time, mail was delivered twice a day. It was carried to the store and

post office and handed to Annie Tyler for many years by Adolph Pfeiffer who began mail service with a horse and wagon. In the winter months, he used a horse and sleigh. According to an article in the Three Village Herald in 1965, “Occasionally when the roads were almost impassable, the mail was taken by Mr. Pfeiffer on horseback, or even on foot — pulling the bags on a sled.

Later with the advent of the automobile, he became agent for the Franklin automobile, and these as well as other makes of cars were used for transporting the mail.”

The entrance to the post office in the West Setauket store was through a side door on the left (north) side of the building. The northern third of the store was the post office and the remainder, from the front door over, was the general store. Annie Tyler was postmaster and her sister Corinne (1858–1941) ran the general store.

The general store was the center of the small community, which included about 100 families and numbered less than 800 people. The school on the Village Green, the churches and the new library around the Green and the grist mill on the lower pond were also a part of the community’s hub.

The general store and post office building was a center for communication and gossip as well as a place to tell stories and swap information about the latest farm equipment, the weather and, of course, politics.

Telephone lines were first installed from a central office in Northport in 1896. In the last few months of 1899, central offices were established in Port Jefferson and Smithtown.

According to historian Kate Strong, the first telephone subscribers in Setauket were her father Selah B. Strong, her uncle Thomas S. Strong, Annie Tyler’s store and the Setauket railroad depot.

Lucy Keyes, who was born in 1900, remembered in a 1989 interview that when she was 6 or 7 and going to school on the Village Green, she would walk home, stopping first at the post office.

Miss Annie used to make money orders and everything … We went there to pay land taxes.

“Miss Corinne took care of the store.

They kept it open even during lunch — Miss Corinne and Miss Annie switched. It was open until after mail at night. There were two mails — a morning and an evening mail. We used to trade with Sears and Roebuck and Montgomery Ward. It came in the mail.”

Keyes recalled that Corinne’s brother Henry Tyler helped her at the store.

“Momma and Poppa brought all their groceries there,” Keyes said. “We bought canned goods, salt pork, potatoes, bread and even bananas in later years. We were a big family, and we was always down there.

Sometimes Poppa paid once a week. They kept track of it and I could get anything.

They never asked no questions.”

Lucy Keyes was one of 12 children of Jacob and Hannah Hart born between about 1880 and 1910. An 1889 “day book” for the “Tyler Bro” store lists “Jacob Hartt” 34 times

in a two-month period. One entry included “1 box blueing, 1 jelly roll, 4 barrels, 3 butter tubs, 1 box, 1 bag flour, 5 candles, 1 loaf bread, 1 bot. vinegar, 1 lb lard,” all for $2.42.

Keyes remembered a candy case in the store that contained a number of selections.

“You would get four or five round things for a penny,” she said. “Jawbreakers, three or four for a penny; and stick candy was a penny a stick.”

By 1915, the automobile was beginning to change the buying habits of local residents who found a wider range of goods and services in specialty stores. The telephone was bringing gossip and information directly into the home, and Parcel Post was bringing catalog shopping into the home. The post office in Setauket was also becoming an independent operation and would soon outgrow the general store where it had coexisted for so many years.

Former Nassakeag Elementary School teacher, Elaine Tierney Elaine Tierney, 87, died peacefully, surrounded by her daughters and music, June 20, at Maplewood Senior Living in Brewster, Massachusetts.

Born in Elmhurst, New York, in 1931, Elaine was raised in Flushing by her parents, Marion O’Connor of New York City and Joseph Lavin of Ireland. She had two older brothers, Richard and Gerald, who loved to tease their baby sister but also instilled in her a love of baseball. Her extended family included an array of wonderful aunts and cousins, whose influence on Elaine lasted her lifetime. Growing up in a boisterous Irish family provided stories and memories she was able to share for years.

Elaine graduated from Bayside High School in 1949 and Queens College in 1953.

After college she worked for the Department of Welfare on the Lower East Side of

Manhattan, assisting displaced women and their children. Baseball changed her life forever when she met Joe Tierney, another baseball fanatic. They found they had other shared interests — love of dogs, movies, Coney Island — and they married in 1955.

Once her three daughters were born, Elaine went back to school to get her teaching degree. In 1967, the family moved from Deer Park to Setauket, where Elaine became a first-grade teacher at Nassakeag Elementary School. At Nassakeag, she was able to make a difference in children’s lives for nearly 20 years.

After retiring in 1986, Elaine and Joe moved to Cape Cod. The home they built in Brewster became a hub of family events and many Thanksgiving celebrations. They also loved to travel and went on many adventures across the United States, the

Elaine Tierney Caribbean and Europe. Elaine volunteered at Cape Cod Hospital for many years and at Wellfleet Elementary School. She loved taking dance class, singing with the group Common Voices, lunching with her group of Red Hat ladies and enjoying her nightly Manhattan cocktail.

Although Alzheimer’s disease took its hold, her love of music, singing, dancing — and Manhattans — never diminished.

She is survived by her three daughters and their families: Loraine and Mike McNaboe of Farmington, Connecticut; Jill and Doug Heneghan of Vestal, New York; and Barbara Tierney of Orleans, Massachusetts. She had five grandchildren, Peter, Keith and Jennifer McNaboe and Dan and Mike Heneghan. A great-granddaughter is due in October.

Services will take place Friday, July 20.

Visitation is from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, Massachusetts, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Joan of Arc Church, 61 Canal Road, Orleans, at 11 a.m., and burial of ashes at Orleans Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Elaine’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Festival honors local Native American history

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM July 14 and 15 the Setalcott Nation hosted its annual Native American Corn Festival Pow-Wow at Setauket Elementary School. For two days, the grounds were filled with drumming, storytelling,

dancing, food and craft vendors. The event featured drumming by Wolf’s Moon Medicine Drum and an Aztec fire dancing performance by the Salinas Family from Mexico City.

The Setalcott Nation sold 30 acres of land to colonists in 1655, in what would become the Town of Brookhaven.

Library welcomes late artist’s landscapes A local artist’s work will live on in the community, even after his death.

Michael Kutzing, who lived in Port Jefferson for 45 years and died in 2015, enjoyed painting nearby landscapes and still lifes, especially scenes in the Setauket area. On July 16, Denise Kutzing and her family donated three prints of her late husband’s paintings to the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library.

The three pieces are titled “The Melville Barn,” “Setauket Grist Mill” and “The West Meadow Gamecock House.” The barn and grist mill can be found at Frank Melville Memorial Park in Setauket while the Gamecock is among the remaining cottages at West Meadow Beach.

Kutzing said her husband, who was a project manager for a land development company, collected maritime art for many years and took up painting, primarily with oil, after his retirement in 2006. He was a self-taught artist who, for more than a year, owned MRK Gallery in Port Jefferson. He was a member of a number of art organizations including the Art League of Long Island and Smithtown Township Arts Council.

When Kutzing saw her husband’s prints at the library, she said she was pleased with how they looked. The Setauket Frame Shop completed the paintings with earthtone colored matting and wood frames.

The paintings “bring about the essence of the community, and my husband would have been so honored,” Kutzing said.

She said family friend Everett Waters came up with the idea to donate the prints to the library. Ted Gutmann, library director, said when Kutzing and Waters came to him with the idea he wasn’t familiar with the artist’s work, but after looking at the portfolio he was impressed, especially since many were local, recognizable scenes. He brought the idea to the library board of trustees, and everyone worked together to choose which prints to display.

“It’s a good location,” Gutmann said.

“They look like they belong there, and I think they’re going to attract a lot of attention.”

“The level of detail, the colors, the perfection was amazing,” he said.

Waters said Kutzing loved the area, and while he painted other subjects, a lot of the locations were right near the library.

“I thought there should be some way to

note the fact that someone had enjoyed the place and seen it in such a way,” Waters said. “Because if you see that someone sees through certain eyes, then maybe you see it more. ‘I should pause. I should go see that barn. When I go to the beach I should see the Gamecock Cottage.’”

The artwork is now displayed outside the Vincent R. O’Leary Community Room on the library’s lower level. Emma S. Clark Memorial Library is located at 120 Main St., Setauket.

Suffolk lawmakers need to get their priorities in order Whew, that was close. We feared that a good ole game of Suffolk County partisan tug-of-war almost left us high and dry again.

Suffolk County legislators voted down 14 bond-seeking bills for various projects that have impact on the day-to-day life of residents June 5 and 19 on a party-line basis. The reasoning given was the 14 items were lumped together in three resolutions, which Republicans argued didn’t allow them to individually vote against projects that they didn’t agree with or may regret funding later.

For nearly a month, both Democrats led by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) and Republicans headed by Minority Leader and Legislator Tom Cilmi (R-Bay Shore) publicly bickered back and forth on how to approach county bonds. Each group held press conferences and made inflammatory statements as time kept ticking in the race against the clock to get federally matching funds for both the Wading River-to-Mount Sinai Rails to Trails project and repaving of Commack Road, among others.

It’s said all’s well that ends well, right? Luckily for North Shore residents, both the Rails to Trails and Commack Road bills received the bipartisan support — a supermajority 12 out of 18 votes — necessary to move forward at the July 17 legislative meeting. Most of the 14 bills were voted on individually this time around, the majority of which were approved.

Unfortunately, a few projects failed or were not voted on. Cries for funding repairs and upgrades to Suffolk County Police Department’s K-9 Unit facility in Yaphank failed despite the roof leaking, the floor having holes and the air conditioner and heating not working properly, according to Bellone. Republicans argued the planning should be done in-house rather than borrowing to pay for the project.

We couldn’t help but notice that a bill to fund $4.68 million for upgrades for the Suffolk County Police Department and county Medical Examiner’s office also failed. Another bill, one that would have given the Republican Suffolk County Board of Elections Commissioner Nick LaLota another term, as his time in office ends Dec. 31, also failed. The outcome of these votes seems to indicate that political partisanship is still afoot, alive and well, as all Long Islanders are aware that politics, too, affects our law enforcement offices.

A word of warning to our Suffolk County elected officials: While President Donald Trump (R) and our U.S. Congress play on sharp political divides to gain power and momentum, that’s not an acceptable way to act here. We beg, don’t take your political cues from Washington, D.C. We — your residents, constituents and voters — expect you to rise above party politics and do what’s best for Suffolk. You must reach out across the aisle, discuss charged issues calmly and reach a compromise that best benefits all. It’s in the job description.

Clergy stand in unison on Muslim ban In early 2017, several of us wrote a letter to the editor of this publication expressing our deep concern as faith leaders about the executive order barring people from certain Muslim-majority nations from entering the United States. In that letter, we wrote in part: “For centuries people have come to the United States seeking a life of freedom, opportunity and peace. Each of our faith traditions shares a conviction in the full humanity of every person.

We believe that to be human is to be created in the image of the divine we call by many names: among them God, Allah, Spirit.

When we fail to see the divine in one another, we diminish our own humanity. The scriptural imperative to ‘love your neighbor’ knows no religious or national boundaries, and our common interest in security is only undermined when we allow fear to dismantle the very principles of our democracy.”

Though the ban has gone

through several iterations in attempts to survive legal scrutiny, it remains clear that the primary intent of every version of the order has been to limit access to the United States for those who are Muslim. We are so saddened by the Supreme Court’s recent decision upholding the ban, the impact that it will have on our Muslim neighbors and their loved ones, and the damage it does to the founding American ideal of religious freedom and tolerance.

We worry about the health of a democracy that permits this kind of discrimination. And we remain committed to building a beloved community here in the Three Village area, and in our nation, that celebrates and welcomes religious diversity.

President has no sense of patriotism When President Trump departed for Europe last week, it was the unanimous consensus of all 17 American intelligence agencies, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the House and Senate Intelligence committees and the U.S. Department of Justice — supported by an indictment of 12 Russian intelligence officers — that Russia had blatantly interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Moreover, there was no doubt that Russia had annexed Crimea, occupied eastern Ukraine, shot down a Malaysian airliner, assassinated opponents in England and Moscow, and backed the Assad regime in the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Syrian civilians.

In Europe, rather than building support among America’s European allies, Trump viciously attacked U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, listed America’s primary foe as the European Union, and undercut the ability of NATO to contain Russian aggression.

Having spawned discord in

Brussels and London, Trump arrived in Helsinki, Finland, with an opportunity to confront the Russian tyrant. Instead, in what Sen. John McCain called “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory,” Trump credited Russian President Vladimir Putin’s denial of waging cyber warfare over his own intelligence agencies assessment, stating he “cannot see any reason to believe Russia interfered in the election.” Moreover, Trump conceded he did not directly criticize or challenge Putin over any other Russian transgression.

But Trump did more than absolve Putin — who acknowledged he wanted Trump to be elected president — blaming American “foolishness and stupidity” for tensions in the U.S.–Russia relationship. Trump’s sickening attempt at moral equivalence (“I hold both countries responsible”) between Russia and the United States was condemned by, among others, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney

(“claiming a moral equivalence … undermines our national integrity and impairs our global credibility”), former Speaker Newt Gingrich (“most serious mistake” of Trump presidency), the Wall Street Journal (“national embarrassment”) and Sen. Jeff Flake (“I never thought I would see the day when our American president would stand on the stage with the Russian president and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression”).

Former CIA director, John Brennan, after condemning Trump’s performance as “nothing short of treasonous,” asked “Republican patriots: Where are you?” Indeed, will Trump supporters who have ignored and excused his endless litany of lies, policy missteps and moral outrages, finally, in the face of Trump’s betrayal of America and siding with a Russian tyrant over his own country, ask the president, “Have you no sense of patriotism, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of patriotism?”

hey aren’t unicorns, tooth fairies or fantastic creatures from the C.S. Lewis “Narnia” series. And yet, for a Long Islander who spent considerable time standing knee deep in the waters around West Meadow Beach, listening to the aggressive screech of territorial red-winged blackbirds, the sight of a green ruby-throated hummingbird moving forward and backward in North Carolina brought its own kind of magic.

welcome from the nonhuman quarters of Southeastern life.

Behind a Chili’s and Qdoba — yes, they are side by side in a strip mall here — we discovered a spectacular lake with a small walking path over the water near the shore. Looking down, we saw numerous fish hovering below and, to our delight, a collection of turtles, who all clearly have an appetite for the leftovers from the nearby restaurant.

We have also seen, and felt, considerably more bugs and mosquitoes, while we’ve heard cicadas, which, unlike the 17-year kind on Long Island, emerge here every year.

So, what about the two-legged creatures?

After the initial shock from the level of consideration other drivers displayed, it’s become clear that: (a) The Northeast hasn’t cornered the market on aggressive and anxious drivers. (b) You can take the New Yorker out of New York, but you can’t take New York out of the New Yorker.

Until I get North Carolina license plates, I have been driving the speed limit on smaller, local roads. Other cars have tailgated me so closely that I can practically read their lips as they talk on the phone or sing songs.

I watched a woman in a Mustang convertible, with rap music shouting profanities, weave in and out of traffic as her long hair waved in the breeze behind her. From a distance, the music and expletives were one and the same.

We have also seen an extensive collection of tattoos. A young FedEx driver climbed out of her truck and rang the bell to deliver a package.

Her arms were so covered in colors and designs that it was difficult to discern a theme or pattern.

I walked into a supermarket behind a young couple pushing a baby stroller. The father had tattoos along the back of his muscular calves, while body ink adorned the well-defined shoulders and arms of his wife. I wondered if and when their young child might get her first tattoo.

When they find out we’re from the Northeast, people in North Carolina frequently become self-deprecating about their inability to handle cold weather. They laugh that flurries, or even a forecast for snow, shuts down the entire city of Charlotte. They assure us that no matter how much we shoveled elsewhere, we won’t have to lift and dump snow by the side of the road.

They ask how we’re handling the heat, which is often in the mid-90s, and the humidity, which is fairly high as well. While the three H’s — hazy, hot and humid — are my least favorite combination, I have certainly experienced many warm summers on Long Island, where shade or a trip into the ocean or a pool provide small comfort in the face of oppressive warmth.

With birds and insects of all sizes flying around, and drivers weaving in and out of traffic, North Carolina has displayed an abundance of high-energy activity.

any residents know about the Culper spies that operated along the North Shore of Long Island and gave invaluable intelligence about British troop movements and plans to Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War. But perhaps not so many know that two of Washington’s letters to his chief spymaster Major Benjamin Tallmadge, of Setauket, are on display locally and are available for viewing by the public. They are part of the Special Collections & University Archives of Stony Brook University Libraries, and how we got them is itself a

estate of Malcolm Forbes, the publishing magnate, and were put up for auction

by Christie’s at two separate times.

Forbes was proud of the fact that he had collected artifacts from each American president. Where those letters were for some 200 years before he got them is a deep mystery, but they are here now, thanks to the alacrity of local historyminded leaders, like state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), members of the historical society and philanthropist Henry Laufer.

On May 24, 2006, Frank Turano, then president of the historical society, Nyitray and Englebright took the train to New York City for the auction. Armed with a modest amount of money, given how much historical memorabilia sold for, they hoped to purchase the first letter and return it to the place where history happened.

Nyitray was the paddle wielder, indicating a willing purchaser at the auctioneer’s bidding, and the three nervously awaited the sale of Lot 31, the first coveted letter. As parts of the estate sold ahead of the desired letter for much more than the resources of the triumvirate, they became increasingly nervous. Paddles were waving

and telephones ringing with high bids all around them. Finally the letter, in Washington’s elegant hand, written from West Point on Sept. 24, 1779, and arriving in Setauket Sept. 26, was offered and miraculously the phones fell silent and the paddles went down.

Only Nyitray’s was visible and, unchallenged, she won the bid.

The winning price was $80,000.

Add in the commission for the auction house and other incidentals, and the final cost for the precious letter was almost $100,000. They had enough money.

The three were ecstatic. They were going to bring that letter back to Setauket where “The Father of our Country” had originally sent it.

Within the month, after paperwork was completed, they were able to carry their treasure back to SBU in a brown shopping bag.

Once safely ensconced, the letter had to be cleaned and preserved by experts, and framed and mounted for suitable viewing. That proved to be an arduous and lengthy series of tasks.

The group returned to Christie’s for the second letter written Sept. 16, 1780, on Feb. 12, 2009, which coincidentally

is the same day as Lincoln’s birthdate.

The quality of paper on which the letters were written was good rag paper, but the ink was made from oak gall, which was high in tannic acid, and was corrosive. The ink had to be treated to preserve the letters.

The initial viewing for the first letter was in October 2006, and the letters have done some traveling since, having been seen in Southampton and by people in Florida, California and Minnesota. They are accessible to all.

The 1779 letter deals with advice on how “Culper Junr.” — who was Robert Townsend — could go about his business as a freelance writer and merchant and also function as a spy.

Washington gives specific instructions on how Townsend should write secret information among the leaves of a pamphlet or even between the lines of a newsy letter to a friend with special invisible ink. We know that ink was fabricated by Founding Father John Jay’s elder brother, James, who was a physician, and was referred to by the spies as “medicine.”

The letter is signed, “I am Sir Your most obedient and humble servt. Go. Washington.” What a thrill.

Ward Melville ice hockey reflects on state championship season

Mark Devlin was at his son Ryan’s high school graduation ceremony last month and couldn’t believe his ears. As Ward Melville High School’s valedictorian took to the podium, he referenced three state championship teams from the past school year — the field hockey, boys lacrosse and ice hockey teams.

“I almost fell out of my chair,” the former five-year president and general manager of the Ward Melville Ice Hockey Club said, laughing. “They’ve never recognized our hockey club at the high school, and there was a huge roar up in the stands, so it was really cool. Our town is known for lacrosse and now the word is getting out about the hockey team.”

Although Devlin, who was also the varsity head coach last year, has since stepped down as president of the club, the soon-to-be varsity assistant coach said it has come a long way from when he took over five years ago, creating a board and turning the 30-year-old organization into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

The varsity team was 1-19 when his son first entered the youth league, and last year, the Patriots became the first team in the Suffolk County High School Ice Hockey League to go undefeated. They also took home the club’s first state championship, which qualified the team for its first national showing.

“This year we told a very different story,” recent graduate and co-captain Zachary Boritz said. “We found out after our last game that we were the first team to go undefeated and I was in shock, I couldn’t believe it. And to make it to states and then to nationals was a dream come true.”

Ward Melville took the ice in Minnesota right before the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School team from Florida, the district rocked by a tragic mass shooting in February. The Patriots wore stickers on their helmets that said, “MSD Strong,” the parents of the teams greeted one another, and the Stoneman Douglas kids applauded the Patriots as they took center stage.

“It was a horrible tragedy and we hoped to show our support from the guys on Long Island,” Boritz said. “Being on that stage was something else. Out of all of the tournaments and showcases I’ve been to

Part of the program’s secret is four years ago Devlin created 10- to 12-year-old and 13- to 15-year-old developmental teams.

The club also takes in players from the greater Port Jefferson area and Mount Sinai, hoping to expand in the future to create more teams.

“Those teams have taken off,” Devlin said. “Now, I think they’re looking at creating a 7- to 10-year-old team, so from a community aspect we’re getting kids involved in hockey at the lowest levels now.”

Current vice president Greg Kryjak said watching the varsity Patriots excel the way they did was jaw-dropping, especially with a 126-21 goal differential.

“Most of the time when you watch hockey there are three forwards and two defensemen, and you can clearly see that on the ice, the difference with this team is there were five players out there regardless of what position they played that could score or defend,” he said. “It really differentiated

them from the rest of the teams.”

This set the stage for a dynamic playoff atmosphere, where Devlin said people had to be turned away as the rink filled with high school classmates and parents. The team bested St. John the Baptist 5-2 and blanked reigning league champion Smithtown-Hauppauge 5-0 in a decisive game three for the Patriots’ first league title. Ward Melville went 4-1 in the state tournament to secure a place in the final game, which the team won 3-0.

“We’re huge with offense — scored a lot of goals this year,” Boritz said. “It wasn’t just the first line — every single line all the way to the fourth line, everyone was contributing, which was great to see because a few years prior it wasn’t really like that.”

Co-captain Brendan Callow was also recognized by Devlin as being a big playmaker out on the ice, especially when some of the other major contributors were out with injuries.

“He won games almost single handily, and he’s the most humble, high-character kid you’d ever meet,” the coach said. “If I had to pick one kid, he’s the guy who when

we needed a big goal or we needed something going on, he did it. He was also an extension of the coaching staff. Because he’s such a great player and a great guy, the rest of the team looked up to him.”

Blanking Smithtown 5-0 was significant for the team, after Ward Melville lost in devastating fashion to the Bulls in the state finals two years ago with 2.1 seconds left in a decisive game three.

“That was one of the most heart wrenching losses we’ve ever had,” said Devlin, who was an assistant at the time. “They’ve been our nemesis. It was thrilling to beat them.”

He said he was also feeling so many different emotions at the time of the win because his son was one of 13 seniors on the squad, and because he’d been coaching 10 of the upperclassmen since they were 5 years old.

“They’re second and third sons to me — I’ve watched them grow up,” Devlin said.

“Their work ethic, their accountability, their love for each other, no one wanted to let the guy next to them down. To watch these seniors go out on top like that, it was a fairy-tale ending. I couldn’t have written a better script.”
