William Sun Is Ward Melville’s 2020 Valedictorian

East Setuket’s William Sun ended the school year on a high note.

Sun is Ward Melville High School’s valedictorian with a 105.01 weighted average.

The valedictorian is planning on attending Brown University in Rhode Island to major in computer science.

Sun attended Nassakeag Elementary School and then W.S. Mount Elementary for the district’s intellectually gifted classes. Before Ward Mellville, he studied at P.J. Gelinas Middle School. While he has lived in the Three Village area all his life, his father, Yan Sun, a doctor, and his mother, Hong Tan, a nurse, are originally from China and moved here in the 1990s and now run a doctor’s office.

Sun said attending Three Village through the years he has been surrounded by brilliant peers.

“There are so many smart people in this community,” he said.

During his high school career, he has been a member of the Ward Melville High School Varsity Science Olympiad Team and was also the president of the school’s math team and computer science club. He qualified for the International Science and Engineering Fair and

won a silver medal at the Long Island math research competition. The valedictorian played piano and violin in the school’s ensembles and was named an All-State pianist, qualified as an All-State alternative for violin and toured in Spain and eastern Europe in eighth- and 10thgrade, respectively, through the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. In 2020, he was named a National Merit Scholarship winner.

Among his activities and achievements, being the director, creator and manager of Piano for Patients has been one of his favorites.

He and other student-musicians would play piano in the Stony Brook University Hospital lobby and over time other musicians became involved performing with other instruments.

He’s hoping before he attends college and hands over his responsibilities to a younger student that the group can do one more performance in the summer, since they haven’t been able to perform during the pandemic. Recently, he and his piano teacher Daniel Fogel have organized an online concert as an alternative way to do community service through playing piano.

In addition to Piano for Patients, he volunteered at the hospital helping out with whatever needed to be done to lighten the load for workers, whether it was moving things around, making beds or cleaning floors.

He said choosing computer science came about since he’s been involved in programming since sixth- and seventh-grade, and he also took courses at Stony Brook University where

he was involved in programming as well as researching different ways to find data.

“In the future, computer science is going to have a large impact and so I want to be a part of that,” he said, adding he thinks about working at places such as Google in the future.

He said among the teachers in the Three Village school district who had an influence on him was former Gelinas teacher Gary Vorwald, who was both his earth science teacher and the head of Science Olympiad in the school.

The valedictorian remembers how the teacher would stay late at school to help students.

“It was the first time that I saw passion for science, he really made me want to join the Science Olympiad,” he said.

As the school was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, Sun said he kept himself busy with computer science projects and learning Mandarin.

As he leaves Ward Melville behind, he said he’s impressed with the younger students.

“This is really a tumultuous time but we’ve seen some amazing things, especially from the grades that are coming up,” he said. “People are really pushing for what they believe in. What I would say is fight for what you believe in, because with what’s going on now, people are really fighting for justice and such amazing things.”

Matthew Fiorella Named High School’s Salutatorian

Ward Melville’s salutatorian capped off the school year with a 104.85 weighted grade point average.

With the school year behind him, Matthew Fiorella is ready to head to the University of California, Los Angeles and major in engineering. He said when it came to choosing colleges it was down to the California school and the University of Michigan. He decided he would have better intern and job opportunities through UCLA. Plus, he said he liked California after visiting there a couple of times.

Originally living in Arizona and Ohio when he was younger, Fiorella moved to the Three Village Central School District for second grade. He started at Setauket Elementary School and then entered the Intellectually Gifted Program at Mount Elementary School in fourth grade. He continued his studies at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School.

During his high school career, Fiorella has kept busy both in and outside of school.

He was the president of the Junior Model UN, a member of the National and Spanish

honor societies and was named a National Merit Finalist. The salutatorian was also a member of the school’s band. He played first alto saxophone and was president of the wind ensemble. He also completed an internship at the biotechnology startup Vascular Simulations Inc. As far as sports, he worked as a coach for the Three Village Youth Basketball organization and took part in the Sports Arena Basketball team.

He said balancing extracurriculars with schoolwork can be challenging.

“It’s trying not to waste time and not to procrastinate, which is difficult because it’s something that I think is natural to a lot of people,” he said. “I think being involved in a lot of things and moving around a lot helps me stay disciplined.”

Fiorella has been inspired by his father, Dr. David Fiorella, who works at Stony Brook University Hospital, and his mother, Andrea Fiorella, a former physical therapist. Besides his parents, Fiorella said his cousin David Lawrence has been an influence in his life.

Lawrence is an electrical engineer, which Fiorella found interesting because there are creative elements to that field, and he had the

opportunity to tour his cousin’s workplace when he was younger.

“It was always very interesting to me, and it was really cool to see the more imaginative side of engineering, and it’s kind of what got me interested in it,” he said.

However, with a recent curiosity in history and politics during high school, he said he may even consider studying law in graduate school one day.

“I like engineering, but I don’t feel like I have had the chance to really validate that interest because most of the courses you take in school don’t reflect engineering until you get into college,” he said.

With senior year behind him, and a possible in-person graduation in July, the salutatorian said he and others never imagined the possibility that they might not have a prom or graduation.

“It’s hard because you really don’t know what you’re missing because you haven’t experienced it or something else like it,” he said. “I feel like it’s a very singular experience.”

For those students he leaves behind at Ward Melville High School, he said his advice would be not to stress so much about

the day-to-day things and focus more on enjoying everything.

“This year has really shown there’s so much you really can’t plan for,” he said.

“Even just in the way college decisions come out, you really realize that things aren’t the way you expected them to be. You just kind of have to accept it.”

Bernstein to Remain at SBU for 2020-21 Academic Year

As the 2019-2020 school year comes to a close, Stony Brook University’s recent interim president is returning to familiar territory.

Michael Bernstein will remain at SBU, even though his last day as interim president was June 30. On July 1 he returned to his former position as provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. Last August, Bernstein took on the role of interim president after the departure of former president, Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. Bernstein said he decided to stay after a request from new university president, Maurie McInnis, who was appointed in March, and added that a search for his replacement may take up to a year. He plans to move to California in the future.

“I’m in a position, I think, to help Maurie as she transitions in as the new president,” he said. “Obviously, we’re very much challenged with planning through this COVID emergency and figuring out how we’re going to manage the fall semester, not to mention the whole academic year.”

While the pandemic got in the way of working on some SBU goals such as strategic revisioning, strengthening a few of the business practices and revitalization of the computer system, he’s confident that McInnis, with whom he has been in constant contact since her appointment, will be prepared to take on the challenges once the 2020 fall semester can begin.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, which required colleges and universities to switch to online learning and hold events virtually since March, Bernstein said he enjoyed his time as interim president overall.

“I was surrounded by a superb senior leadership team,” he said. “We were getting a lot done in terms of managing university affairs.”

Bernstein said he realized the importance of taking precautions early on once the number of COVID-19 cases started rising in the U.S. “My sense was that we were in the midst of an emerging crisis that was going to accelerate pretty quickly and pretty dramatically,” he said.

“We made a decision to shut down and start canceling major campus events pretty quickly.”

He said that the campus nearly closed earlier than it did but the school had to wait

for directions from the State University of New York administration to coordinate with the broader school network. Bernstein said the last major event at the campus was the 2020 gala

held at the Staller Center March 7.

“I had said at that point that we will have no more major campus events, and we were a little early when we made that decision,” he said.

While he received some pushback, he’s glad he made the decision.

“I think within a couple of weeks people were circling back to me saying, ‘That was the right decision, thank you for making it as quickly as you did.’ I think it became clear to people that we had to shut everything down.”

He added that shortly after the university cut back on public events, students were asked to head home, and spring break was extended to two weeks so the university could prepare for online learning.

He said at the last in-person university council meeting, it was realized they were all in the midst of a critical moment in their careers and that everyone would be defined by what decisions were made. While he said it was a challenging time, he remained positive.

“There’s the old saying, ‘Calm seas and blue skies do not make good sea captains,’” he said. “You’re not in a leadership position to work when things are calm. When things are calm and fine, you don’t need leaders.”

Time Is All You Need

first month of quarantine. I forced myself to look for ways to connect with her. I tried baking, dancing, running. I enjoyed all activities, but I hated that we had to plan the different ways to go through with them. Shouldn’t these memories come naturally? In order to connect with her, shouldn’t I make plans that coincided with her interests? It definitely took some time to understand that memorable moments come with time and aren’t listed on a piece of paper.

Two months later, it was a brisk Sunday afternoon. I had yet another assignment to complete: A duet project. “Choose someone to play with, whether it be a parent or sibling,” it read. My sister, being a graduating senior and all, hasn’t seriously played her violin in about two years. So the idea of using her as a duet partner was a heavily debated topic. But nonetheless, she brushed it off and actually played with me. To say the least, it was extremely difficult to convince her, but I’m glad that I did. From that moment forward, my admiration for her pure talent skyrocketed. The sounds resonating off our instruments flowed beautifully together as both of our worlds collided. Unspoken words were revealed and small smiles were shared. An understanding was formed. And the bond that we seemingly lost was pieced back together. I think this moment was the world’s one last plea, one last reassurance that everything was going to be fine. Honestly, this state of panic is anything but pretty, but I think that’s what makes it so groundbreaking.

The main takeaway from this jumble of words: Take advantage of what you already have. Based on my own experience, this is the best time to reflect on past mistakes, decisions, or in my case, relationships. I managed to reconnect with my sister through something as simple, yet as complex as music. I never realized that time and hope was all it took to restore something beautiful.

This isn’t forever. This isn’t forever. This isn’t forever. I must remind myself of this hopeful, yet painful saying. When my life isn’t in order, I go into a slight frenzy. It’s an emotional whiplash to go from wishing to be left alone to being held prisoner in my house.

Although I haven’t done anything considered important, I have been able to reconnect with the life that I almost completely forgot. My relationship with my sister. Our friendship.

All sibling relationships have some sort of weaknesses: Miscommunication, time complications, differing opinions, or even different perspectives of our world. But from a young age, my sister and I both noticed how similar our spirits were. We both appreciated the beauty of our music, picking up instruments that define who we are to this day. The path that she will soon take completely resembles my dreams for the future. On paper, our relationship is well-developed. But I guess the stresses of school and these several timeintensive activities have seemingly drowned us. It’s been difficult to accept the fact that we have both evolved, taking on different responsibilities and wants. In simpler terms, we drifted. It’s weird. I’m so used to shutting everything and everyone out to save myself from distractions. Now we scramble for odd ideas to get us through the days: Taking long, pointless walks around the neighborhood. Screening the nine seasons of “The Office.” Playing Monopoly and fighting over who stole money.

All of which distract us from the distractions.

But I still found myself questioning these relationships. Questioning how much I really know my sister. This was a definite concern the

Three Village Board of Education plans for September

BY ANDREA PALDY DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM This spring, voting on the school budget and school board faced the notable challenge of taking place during a pandemic, but other than record levels of voter participation, the final results were anything but unprecedented.

With the absentee ballots counted, Three Village residents voted overwhelmingly in favor — 6,096 for and 3,135 against — to approve the $218.84 million budget for the 2020-21 school year.

Residents also chose to return incumbents Inger Germano (4,727 votes), Irene Gische (4,506) and Dr. Jeffrey Kerman (4,479) to the school board, over challengers Shaorui Li (3,722), David McKinnon (3,799) and Vinny Menten (2,810).

During a phone interview this week, Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich expressed gratitude to the community for its support and confidence in the budget. But not everyone was satisfied with the election process.

Three Village parent David Tracy expressed his dissatisfaction in a letter that was read during the board’s June 24 meeting.

He was “extremely disappointed,” Tracy said, with the teachers union’s ability to “enforce their will on a board of education election.”

The Three Village Teachers Association and New York State Union of Teachers endorsed Germano, Gische and Kerman and paid for the candidates’ campaign signs.

“Having independent candidates is absolutely paramount in ensuring the best interest of all parties involved, mainly the students and the taxpayers,” he said.

Tracy compared the unions’ public and financial support of candidates to “Congress or other political bodies voting for their own raises.” In his letter, he also spoke of what he said is a trend of budget increases despite declining enrollment and voiced his concerns about nepotism, favoritism and conflicts of interest.

While Barbara Rosati, president of the Three Village Parents Alliance, congratulated the newly reelected board members, she too questioned the election process, asking how independent, community-backed candidates could compete against the efforts of the TVTA and NYSUT. Rosati is married to McKinnon, one of this year’s independent candidates. She said that with the union president having “regular access” to administrators and board members “in private settings,” that such access can sometimes mean that the board as a whole is bypassed in some decisions — something she believed happened with the launch of this spring’s remote learning.

deserve to have a strong union, but I am concerned about our district’s governance in the current situation,” Rosati added.

Board members and administrators did not respond to Rosati’s request for “comments, insight and solutions” during the meeting.

However, board president Bill Connors did address the issue in a phone interview.

“We represent the community on the board of education, and we work with the teachers union because we have an awful lot in common,” he said. “We are working in the interest of the children, and I see them as a real partner.”

Though Connors sees the goals of the board and the union as aligned, he said there have been times when the two have not agreed. In 1997, for instance, the district narrowly avoided a strike over a provision in the teachers’ contract requiring them to contribute to their health insurance. The issue was resolved in time for the new school year.

Connors, who announced at the June 24 meeting that he is stepping down as board president, also clarified a statement Rosati made about the union president being on the district payroll. Her salary, Connors said, is reimbursed by the TVTA. Pedisich declined to comment on the parent letters, but said she appreciates the community feedback.

Remote Learning and School Reopening Task Force

During the board’s June 29 meeting, the discussion centered on remote instruction and the reopening of schools in September.

Rosati was critical of the district’s handling of remote learning during the pandemic,

calling it “chaotic.” She made comparisons to what she saw as more successful implementations of synchronous instruction in the nearby Half Hollow Hills District and the free summer bridge program offered by Smithtown to students in grades kindergarten through eighth. She also posed questions about how the district will move forward with instruction and reopening in the fall.

“We recognize that there were aspects of our program that did not go as smoothly as we had wanted, or may not have been as effective,” Pedisich said of the implementation of distance learning in March, during the meeting.

She added that the district has more insight now.

“We are looking at what worked well and what did not work well,” she said.

The district is preparing a survey that will go out to parents and staff in the coming days, Pedisich said. Though officials have received many comments from parents, she said they are difficult to quantify. A survey “can grab information we need and synthesize it quickly,” she added.

The superintendent also said that the district is waiting for guidance from the state, but that its school reopening task force is considering three models — one in which everyone returns, a hybrid model of some inperson classes and some remote, or an entirely remote model.

The district is also preparing for the possibility that the year could begin in-person but revert to entirely remote instruction as it did in March. For this reason, she said, the district will provide kindergarten through sixth grade students with Chromebooks that they will be able to use at home.

The reopening task force is made up of subcommittees for transportation, instruction, scheduling, childcare, athletics, mental health, health needs, facility needs and professional development and technology. Task force members include staff, administrators, parents and board members. Pedisich said parents were selected by the PTA council, while staff and administrators were chosen by their union leadership.

The instructional subcommittee, which has been further divided into elementary and secondary subgroups, is looking at guidelines for minimum standards of instruction and synchronous learning across the district.

Pedisich said that the elementary level and secondary levels will probably look different.

She foresees more structure for the more independent secondary students and more flexibility for younger children who might need assistance from parents.

She said that teachers are continuing to train over the summer to use Google Meets and Hangouts — conferencing software similar to Zoom — that are part of the Google platform the district already uses.

“We as educators feel that it’s so critical for us to be back in September,” Pedisich said, adding that teachers who will be working with new groups of students need to be able to assess their students’ learning styles and needs.

“That’s why we’re looking at following all of the recommendations from the CDC and the DOH, so that we can come back at least for a period of time so that we can get to know our students,” she said.

In other news, the board approved the contracts for the superintendent and the assistant superintendents.

History Close at Hand

Journal Is the First Step in Learning About Former Residents

BY BEVERLY C. TYLER DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM A small leather-bound journal, kept by a Setauket farmer reveals details in the life of an African American laborer. Silas Brewster worked for Walter Smith, an Old Field farmer and merchant, who kept a daily record of Silas’ work.

According to census records, Silas lived next to Smith, in a house on Smith’s property. Before the discovery of the journal and its purchase at auction by the Three Village Historical Society we knew very little about a man named Silas Brewster — but which Silas Brewster?

My interest in the journal first came from my research into the lives of the shipyard workers along Shore Road in East Setauket. In the 1860 census, Silas Brewster is listed as a boatman, but where exactly he lived, what he did and the details of his life were missing. Discovering a journal that gave information about his life would help me tell the story of one Setauket African American seaman. Unfortunately, this was not the right Silas Brewster. In fact, I cannot even establish a relationship between Silas Brewster, boatman, and Silas Brewster, laborer.

Research into seven decennial censuses, gravestones and burial records, historic newspapers, maps, genealogical and archival records have helped identify which Silas Brewster was which; there were three in the Setauket area. Silas Brewster, boatman, lived in the Dyer’s Neck shipbuilding area of East Setauket. He was born between 1823 and 1825 and about 1850 he married Laura, last name unknown, who was born in 1828 or 1829.

Between 1856 and 1858, Silas and Laura had a

son Cyrus who, in 1870, age 12, was working and living in the Miller Place household of Erastus Brown. Cyrus disappears from known records by 1880. This Silas Brewster, listed as a seaman in 1870 and a laborer in 1880 at the age of 51, died on 22 December 1897 and is buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Setauket.

Silas Brewster, the African American laborer of the leather-bound journal, who worked for Walter Smith, was born between 1806 and 1810. By the time of the journal, which covered the period from January 1865 to October 1869, Silas had a wife Phebe whose maiden name was probably Tobias. The couple had one child and possibly two. Silas Junior, born about 1842, and Aner, born between 1857 and 1859. The family lived in a cottage on Smith’s land, along the shore of Conscience Bay as a structure on the 1896 Hyde & Company map labeled “W. Smith Est.” was probably, according to Smith’s descendants, the same cottage that exists there today. By 1860 Silas Jr. was living and working in the household of Charles Conklin and the census lists seven people living in Silas Brewster’s home. Silas, 45, his wife Phebe, 45, another Phebe, 24, Charles, 31, Aner, 5, Frances, 3, and William T., 3/12. In 1865, the first year of the journal, the New York State Census lists only Silas, 59, Phebe, 50, and Aner, 8.

Aside from the error in Silas’ age, was Aner their child or the child of Charles Brewster?

Were the other two also children of Charles and the other Phebe? Was Charles Silas’ brother?

Since Charles and his family don’t appear in any other local census records from 1850 through 1900 why is Aner listed with Silas and Phebe in 1865 and also mentioned in the journal a number of times?

The journal, labeled “Help’s Book” details Silas’ work and pay, listed as credit, on the left side and what he owes to Smith, his debit, on the right side of each page. Every day is accounted for including Sundays when Silas is most often listed as “home all day” or “no work.” Silas’ day included a wide variety of farming activities including plowing, mowing, splitting wood, planting as well as seasonal activities such as killing, salting and cutting up hogs. It appears that Silas also did considerable work carting items to and from the farm and transporting Smith’s family, friends and neighbors to and from the Stony Brook railroad station, out to the Old Field lighthouse, to weddings and funerals, as well as on sleigh rides. Silas was paid (credited) with 25, 50 or 75 cents a day, most days. On the debit side, entries show that Silas bought all kinds of items from Smith’s general store and paid house rent of $25 every May 15th. Debit entries also including Aner’s school bill, clothing and shoes, a Christmas shawl for Phebe and a bill from Dr. Bates.

The journal notes on June 23, 1869, that

Aner was sent to Riverhead, the county seat, for “stealing Brows watch.” On July 12, Smith gave Silas $7 cash to go to Riverhead. We don’t know the outcome for Silas and Aner but court records in Riverhead may tell us more of the story. We do know that Aner is not listed in the 1870 Federal census and that she died May 5, 1873, according to Setauket Presbyterian Church records as unmarried, but mother of two.

Some of the most interesting journal entries are for deaths in the community, both white and African American. In most cases, the entries include the last name for white folk but only the first name for black folk making it more difficult to identify many of the African Americans listed. The entry for Monday, 25 October 1869, for example, says simply, “old Sam died.” On 18 September 1868, “S.A. [Shepard Alonzo] Mount died” and 19 November 1868, only two months later, “W.S. [William Sidney] Mount died. There is no entry for a funeral for Shepard Mount but there are many for transporting Smith family members to funerals. It appears that Silas was trusted with transporting Smith family and friends despite a number of entries where Silas is noted as “got drunk” or “tight.”

There is a great deal more research that can be done to bring more of the story of the Help’s Book to light. We need to learn more about Silas Brewster and his family, more about Walter Smith and his family, about his general store and his business running a stagecoach carrying passengers from the Setauket Railroad Station to Old Field. Acquiring this wonderful journal

was just the first step. So far there is very little here that tells us about their lives; these men and women are still shadows, still one —dimensional beings who should have more interesting stories to tell.

Obituaries Anna Liscia

Longtime Stony Brook resident, Anna Liscia (née Sanfilippo), died June 8 on her 91st birthday.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Anna moved to Stony Brook in December 1961 with her late husband, Nicholas V. Liscia and lived in the same residence on Black Duck Drive until her death.

She was an active member of the St. James R.C. Church in Setauket, in the early years as a Catholic Daughter of the Americas and a member of the Altar Rosary Society, and most recently working tirelessly in the parish Ministry of Consolation.

For several years in the 1960s, she worked in the kitchen at the Maryhaven group home in Port Jefferson, where she became close with many of the residents.

Before her retirement in 1991, she worked for 20 years as a caring member of the staff at St. James Nursing Home.

She loved cooking and spending time with her family at West Meadow Creek. She also loved to dance and was a lively presence any place there was music. Offbeat and vivacious, she was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.

Anna is survived by her children Annette Nagy, of Fort Myers, Florida; Theresa Weinert, of Coxsackie; Nicholas M. Liscia, of Cortlandt Manor; Julia Jacobus of Papillion, Nebraska; Philip Liscia, of Ridge, New York, and Fort Myers, Florida; and Laura Lestrade of Stony Brook; 17 adoring grandchildren and 26 greatgrandchildren. Anna is also survived by her twin sister, Frances Botta, formerly of Fort Salonga.

Lynn Campbell King Morris

Lynn Campbell King Morris died of heart failure June 20.

She was the daughter of the late Archer Stuart Campbell and Evelyn Wester Williams, stepdaughter of the late Hayward A. Williams and sister of the late A. Stuart Campbell.

Lynn is survived and loved by her husband Gregory Morris; her son Paul King and his wife Desirae; their children Jasper, Felix and Malachai; and her daughter Jennifer King and partner Gary Johnson.

Born in Chicago, Lynn grew up in Florida and Connecticut, and graduated from Pembroke College (B.A.), Harvard University (M.A.T.) and Stony Brook University (M.A., Ph.D.).

Lynn taught in Hicksville (intermediate and high school) and at Stony Brook University (rhetoric and science fiction), where she served as the foreign student adviser and dean for foreign students before retiring.

Lynn gave her time and energy generously to work with students and scholars from 90 countries. Her wide travels helped her understand her students, empathize with them and advocate for them. When conventional systems could not meet their needs, Lynn improvised solutions or invited students to share her home.

Lynn completed her doctoral research while serving as foreign student adviser, then expanded her dissertation to publish “Chaucer Source and Analogue Criticism,” a computerized index of 200 years of Chaucerian scholarship. She read voraciously, in several languages. A Master Gardener, Lynn also enjoyed cats, travel, bridge, Scrabble, crochet and Viking culture. She loved attending the Kalamazoo Symphony and appreciated fine art.

Lynn served others as an officer in the Stony Brook Graduate Student Organization, Three Village Garden Club, Petal Pushers Garden Club (Kalamazoo), Kalamazoo Garden Council and

Kalamazoo Area Newcomers Club. Lynn liked to study a wide range of subjects and share the information in a presentation or printed booklet.

Her speeches and essays are noteworthy for their humor and often find a way to include a reference to koi, Beowolf or Asimov when you might least expect it. Her wisdom, smile, wit and love will be missed.

Muriel Weyl

Having lived a full life in Stony Brook for more than 50 years, Muriel Weyl died June 28 at age 94.

Muriel enjoyed an unmatched appreciation for life and derived tremendous joy from connecting with others.

She is perhaps best known as a storyteller, with a wide-ranging collection of friends. She joined the Herstory Writers Workshop, which in 2009 published her book, “Love Song at the End of the Day,” about life with her husband.

Born in Boston, she married Peter Weyl, her partner for the next 69 years. With Peter and her three children, she moved to Stony Brook 53 years ago. She also brought her parents to Stony Brook and cared for her mother for many years. Once again, her caring role came into its own when Peter developed Alzheimer’s, and she looked after him until his death in 2016. The couple sought adventure and travel together throughout their entire marriage, with Peter providing the muscle and Muriel guiding the itinerary.

Muriel was a coordinator of student affairs at Stony Brook University, a mid-life career counselor and a medical administrator. She

was a founder of the Mid-Suffolk chapter of the National Organization for Women and chaired the Greater Port Jefferson/Northern Brookhaven Arts Council for six years. She was honored with a Ray of Light award for her contribution to the women’s movement and role as a community leader.

Muriel regularly attended the university’s classical music concerts and loved and collected art and sculpture. She is survived by her three children Ruth, Stephen and Lisa, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family is planning a private burial and a virtual celebration of life in a few weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the International Rescue Committee (https://help. rescue.org/donate/make-tribute-donation).

Judith M. Pascucci Dowling, 79, of Vero Beach, Florida, and formerly of Setauket, died with her loving husband by her side April 3 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Judy was born in New York City Sept.

19, 1940, the daughter of Peter and Florence (Seimers) Opromolla and married to James E. Dowling Jr. July 2, 1989. Judy was a successful commercial real estate developer for many years on Long Island and the five boroughs, representing 7-11, McDonald’s, Yum Brands and Breslin Realty throughout her career. Judy loved spending time with her family and sharing her love of the arts and classic movies with her children and grandchildren.

Judy is survived by her devoted husband, Jim; his four children and 11 grandchildren; her son Richard (Carla) Pascucci; and grandchildren Dominic, Joseph, Carina and Michael Pascucci; her brother; cherished cousins; and many dear friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m.

Friday, July 10, at St. Mary’s Church in Clinton.

Editorial Letters to the Editor The Kids Are (Not) All Right BOE Change Is Not Going to Happen By Itself It was the winter of 2007 to 2008 when the financial crisis hit. Years of excessive risky loans by banks (and others) and a downturn in the subprime lending market resulted in several years of economic hurt. Many lost their jobs and homes. Some say we truly have never recovered.

For the young people graduating high school or college just over a decade ago, it was walking blind toward a cliff’s edge.

They went through school with certain expectations, but the jobs once promised to be there upon graduation were gone. In the following years, young people took what was available, much of the time it was low-paying service industry jobs without a real hope of promotion. A new kind of employment, something people started to call the “gig economy,” was born. People worked freelance without a chance for receiving health insurance through an employer or have any kind of job security.

Now we face a new impending time of economic peril, and there are many thousands of young people graduating this year from high school or college on Long Island.

We as parents and residents need to ask ourselves, “What will we do for them to make sure they can make it out there in a time of wild unpredictability and economic inhospitability?”

Research indicates that people who graduate in a time of economic tension can remain in worse straits than their peers for over a decade. A 2019 study in the Journal of Labor Economics showed the pay and employment rate for people who graduated during the Great Recession have remained relatively low, even after several years. Millennials, the youngest of whom are 24 while the oldest are nearing 40, hold just 3 percent of America’s wealth compared to 21 percent that the baby boomer generation held at around the same age, according to a 2019 U.S. Federal Reserve report.

This is a pivotal time for young people entering the job market, as not only is this when they can start to accrue wealth and build up savings, but it’s a means to start grinding away at what can be tens of thousands of dollars in student loans.

Without early starts to their careers, young people will end up running in place, making enough to live but not enough to build their credit or finances (though on Long Island it’s rare they will be able to afford the rent to even the smallest apartment).

It’s time as a nation we seriously have to consider governmental action to save the future for our graduates. Yes, that includes student loan forgiveness programs, as there is potentially no worse idea than saddling a young person — who likely never even signed a check before — with thousands upon thousands in debt to either private firms or the U.S. government.

Even more people will be looking to college as a way to build their job prospects, so it’s time we look at additional subsidies for college. We should also start thinking of handing out incentives to companies willing to hire people fresh out of school.

An unregulated financial sector helped cause the 2008 economic collapse. Now with the pandemic, more research has shown if the government, both state and federal, had responded to the crisis with lockdowns sooner, we could have saved more lives and potentially restarted our economy faster and smoother.

What’s done is done, but the fact is young people had no part in causing this economic downturn. Let’s have us as parents and neighbors think about how we can still help young people get ahead in life, for the sake of their entire generation.

To my fellow residents, We can no longer complain about the shortcomings and outright failures of our school district (ahem, remote “learning”) if we do not educate ourselves and participate in the system.

I have attended every board of education meeting this school year (including the virtual meetings.) They are eerily predictable. The BOE meets privately in “executive session” before every meeting. These behind-closeddoors meetings are supposed to be an exceptional occasion, reserved only for the most sensitive issues ... exactly and specifically nine issues, clearly delineated on the district’s website. In the public portion of the meeting, the board president robotically moves through the voting, “All in favor, opposed, abstention, motion passes,” as the board members raise their hands with blank stares,

approving some mysterious decision that affects our children’s futures (and most likely your taxes). There is no meaningful explanation to the public sitting in front of them, the same people who voted them into office in the first place.

If you choose to speak at the BOE meeting, you are given exactly three minutes; go over the time limit and you will be promptly cut off, mid-sentence, no matter how critical the issue. Wait another month for the next meeting to finish your thought if you want to, even if no one else is waiting to speak. The BOE president does not respond with anything but a simple “thank you.” No acknowledgment of your point, no discussion. Are the board members prohibited from engaging with the public for whom they are supposed to be representing?

Then what exactly is the purpose of the public portion of the meeting?

There is a code of ethics for our

BOE members, but no school board ethics commission or ethics advisory council. The code is meaningless without oversight and enforcement.

An ethics commission could monitor BOE financial management, nepotism, conflicts of interest (i.e., teachers union assistance in board election campaigns) and board member conduct. In order to ensure transparency, we need to demand an ethics advisory panel for our district.

Change is not going to happen by itself.

So stop complaining to me while we stand in line at Stop & Shop. Help me do something about it. Attend the monthly BOE meetings.

We are all busy, but what else will you be doing for that same 60-90 minutes one Wednesday a month? Whatever it is, it’s probably not as important.

School Board Election Step Toward Establishing Ideal

Self-governing school districts were first codified in the 1820s. These original school boards were intended as a vehicle for parents to provide oversight and control of schooling for their children. Teacher labor unions first formed in the 1910s.

Since that time, teachers unions have taken close to total control of a significant fraction of school boards across the nation.

Most parents view this outcome as clearly at odds with the original intent of the school board system, even while respecting the right of public employees to unionize.

In the recently completed school board election the Three Village Teachers Association retained control of our school board for another year, extending an almost unbroken decades-long run of control. Despite this loss, the independent candidates also had some success. Two candidates each won more than 3,700 votes, primarily from parents. There are

now two groups of residents who are willing to vote in significant numbers in school board elections. This is an important step forward toward reestablishing normal democratic function to our board elections.

For a majority of parents, doing a good job parenting their children is the single highest priority in their lives. The education system is an important part of that process, but it is only one part. Parents have a much greater stake in their children’s success than employees of the school system, no matter how professionally dedicated those employees may be. In an ideal world, the priority of the parents’ interest in the success of the school system would be reflected in an appropriate sharing of power between the teachers union and independent, parentbacked representatives on the board.

We are not there yet, but this election was an important step toward establishing this ideal and we will build on this progress

in the future. I would personally like to thank everyone who voted for Shaorui Li and myself. I would also like to thank the ever-expanding number of people who contributed to our campaigns. It was an honor to share our commitment to education with so many wonderful people. Thanks also go to the Three Village Chamber of Commerce, Three Village Civic Association, Three Village PTA Council, The Village Times Herald, Three Village Dads, Three Village Connection, Three Village Parents, and Malinda Seeley, all of whom gave us and our supporters an opportunity to present a case for change. Believing in the Power of American Innovation

A

merica was reluctant to enter both World Wars and yet we won them both, at a tremendous cost to previous generations.

Today, as we continue to battle through the coronavirus, I’d like to think we will persevere. We don’t need political spin.

We have plenty of that from both sides.

We need a sense of optimism, of shared purpose and of a keen belief that we will prevail through hard work D. None and a readiness to of the above innovate and adapt.

We see so many

in Florida and Texas, among others.

Even as we do everything we can to protect our health and the safety of our friends and family, we need to believe in ourselves and in our ability to work together. Defeating the virus takes more than ignoring it or claiming victory for political expediency.

Whoever wins this presidential election in this incredibly challenging year will have enormous work to do.

Even a vaccine that is tested and produced in mass quantities by the early part of next year, which seems spectacularly optimistic but is still possible, doesn’t automatically put us back on the path to the world of 2019.

After all, the flu vaccine doesn’t eradicate the illness. It comes back with a vengeance some years. Some people who receive the shot still get sick, oftentimes with less severe symptoms.

We need to recognize that the world has changed. We’ve had time to process it and to adjust, even if we’re sick of the new rules. We need to use all the space we have to turn what

seems like a nuisance and an inconvenience into a modern triumph.

The country can and should rethink everything from ways to attend sporting events to the specific needs of the home office. Maybe sports stadiums should remove seats, put picnic tables in front of patrons and make the game-time experience for fans look different because, for the foreseeable future, it will be.

Yes, I know, that will cost an incredible amount of money, but it would also give patrons a chance to enjoy their own space, instead of hoping for a time machine that brings us back to an era when we gave strangers a high five when our team scored.

Maybe waiters and waitresses can provide virtual personalized service, connecting through online services that deliver, via conveyor belt beneath those tables, contactless food to guests.

We need to renovate our homes to enjoy the new reality. Maybe we need virtual artwork we can add to our walls, that helps expand our small rooms and that changes at the flick of a

switch. Maybe we also can figure out ways to create virtual assembly lines, where workers provide their part of a mechanized process from a distance, in a basement, workspace, or outside in their enclosed yards. It may not be as efficient, because someone might have to transport those parts, but those driving opportunities also create jobs for people who become a part of a new, virtual factory.

We may want to go back to the way things were, but we need to recognize the realities, and the opportunities, that come from moving forward. Moving on will require us to develop new ideas, create new jobs, and believe in ourselves. We have survived and thrived through challenges before, by pulling together, by innovating, and by tapping into the combination of ingenuity and hard work.

People are prepared to put in the effort to earn their own version of the American Dream.

We need innovations, new businesses, and inspirations that reignite the economy, while protecting our health.

Yes, that is the first stanza of our national anthem, the star-spangled banner. It has been my experience, at ballgames and other public

gatherings (remember those?) where the anthem has played, that many Americans do not know all the words. In fact, not a lot of the words. In truth, not any of the words beyond the first two sentences. Confess: that’s you or your spouse or your children.

Now there is always a story behind every creation. In honor of our nation’s upcoming birthday, I thought I would tell you some of the controversial story and remind you of the words of at least the first and last of the four stanzas written by Francis Scott Key. So who was Francis Scott Key and how did he come to write these words?

Key was a good-looking, rich American lawyer, author and amateur poet who was from Frederick, Maryland. Born August 1, 1779, three years after the start of the Revolutionary War, he lived to be 63, dying at the beginning of 1843.

He was married to Mary (“Polly”) Tayloe Lloyd and they had eleven children. Incidentally, F. Scott Fitzgerald was a distant relative.

We remember that we learned of Key viewing the attack by the British on Fort McHenry from a ship outside Baltimore during the brief War of 1812, and how he

could not tell, through the dark night, if the fort had fallen to the enemy. But at dawn, when he saw the flag still flying, he was inspired to write the poem in 1814 that was to become our national song.

His friends called him “Frank,” which often blended with Key to come out “Frankie.” He had a high profile, having been part of Andrew Jackson’s Kitchen Cabinet, the unofficial advisers who were so influential. He defended a young Sam Houston in court on the latter’s trial over beating up an Ohio congressman. He was U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, and he prosecuted the would-be assassin of President Jackson, who by the way was a Southern slaveholder.

Key, as a youth, had almost become an Episcopal priest, helped found two seminaries and wrote about poetry’s influence on religion.

He also had a complicated and contradictory relationship with slavery. He personally owned six slaves, though he allegedly opposed the practice and eventually set them all free. Yet he did not do so for the many slaves his wife inherited and who worked the farm that provided much of the family’s income. He represented

slaves for free in court who were trying to win their freedom, yet he was bitterly opposed to the abolitionist movement, and as U.S. district attorney, challenged its efforts. He strongly supported the colonization of former slaves in Africa, helping to found the colony of Liberia.

It is no surprise, then, that in the recent rush to tear down statues, his was toppled on Friday, June 19, in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Today we have come to recognize that the imperfect Key is inseparably linked with slavery and pride in our nation.

O thus be it ever when free men shall stand Between their lov’d homes and the war’s desolation!

County Q&A With Deputy Police Commissioner on Recent Protests/Reforms

The deputy commissioner supported the Constitutionally protected right to protest. Mention-Lewis was an assistant district attorney in Nassau County and has served as the first African American Deputy Police Commissioner in Suffolk County. In a wide-ranging interview, which is edited for space, Mention-Lewis offered her candid assessment of the civil unrest and the questions about police triggered by the killing of Minneapolis resident George Floyd at the end of May. TBR: What is your role in these protests?

Mention-Lewis: I’m the Deputy Police Commissioner. The way I look at it, the time we’re in is the time I was born for. My whole career has brought me to be who I am in this moment in time.

TBR: Can you offer some examples?

Mention-Lewis: All the things I’ve been doing my career are coming together. I’ve been talking about race my entire career. I’ve been talking about disparate treatment in criminal justice. [I have supported] more resources for previously incarcerated people and people of color my entire career. If we want to drive down crime, you have less reentry to do if you do more intervention.

We’re focused on the back end, when we could do much more on the front end.

TBR: What are some of the solutions on the front end?

Mention-Lewis: Police spend a lot of time in minority communities. They are learning to spend time in the community versus as an outsider. They are learning about the youth centers, resource centers. They are talking to those guys on the corner. When I first got here, I hung out on the corner more than I did anything else. I know that was weird. What is the Deputy Police Commissioner doing on the corner?

That’s where you get your connections and your influence, getting to know people.

TBR: What sorts of resources do people need?

Mention-Lewis: Part of our job is to make information accessible, to make resources accessible. That’s why I work with [County Executive Steve] Bellone and [Babylon Town Supervisor Rich] Schaffer to make sure the resource center has what is needed in a resource center. If I have to travel two to 2.5 hours on a bus, I’m not getting that resume done. Go online? What if I don’t have Internet. What if I only have a laptop or a cell phone? The resource center needs to have computers. Some communities need a Department of Labor in the neighborhood.

TBR: Have the police been effective in

making community connections?

Mention-Lewis: We’ve done a really good job of getting into our communities. It’s why we didn’t have incidents [during the over 100 protests]. We had people on bikes talking with people before the marches started.

TBR: Are the protests creating change?

Mention-Lewis: Humans navigating life in white skin have the privilege of not thinking about race, until now. However, because they have not thought about it, they often may not know how to think about it. I’m a practical person. I want resources in the community and also help the Police Department Command understand the framing in the moment.

TBR: Are African American residents skeptical of government resources?

Mention-Lewis: One of the largest things that the government and policing need to understand: because of the history of America, Black people, even if sometimes you bring the resources, [think] it’s a suspect resource. There’s the Tuskegee experiment [in which Black men with syphilis didn’t receive treatment, even when penicillin became the standard of care in 1947. The study continued until the press reported it, in 1972].

TBR: What’s the impact of the Tuskegee Experiment?

Mention-Lewis: There’s always this undercurrent of mistrust, and rightfully so.

The Tuskegee experiment went into the early 1970s. We’re talking about recent impacts on Black communities. White communities are not aware all the time. When that body was found in Huntington, people think about lynching. The police may not know, but there are six across the country that Black people are paying attention to. If you don’t know the cultural context, it’s difficult to be having the conversation.

TBR: How do you create the cultural context?

Mention-Lewis: If there are suicides or murders, it [doesn’t matter] in the sense of cultural context. People are concerned, even if the police say they are all suicides. Even if the police say they are all suicides, people of color say, ‘we know they don’t always tell us the truth, especially when we die.’

TBR: What can help develop that cultural context?

Mention-Lewis: We talk to leadership. We talk to families. We have a press conference with all of us and not just the police. When we start thinking about cultural context, how do we communicate taking into account that cultural context? It’s the same with recruitment. We have a low number of African Americans in the police department. We have to talk about the 1,000 pound invisible elephant in the room.

TBR: What’s your focus in the Police Department?

Mention-Lewis: Criminal justice and driving down violence in communities.

TBR: How do you think Suffolk County has done in the police department?

Mention-Lewis: We are ahead of the game.

We’ve been working with the Department of Justice for many years. The DOJ is saying we have one of the best implicit bias training programs.

They asked us to teach the Ferguson [Missouri Police Department, where a white police officer killed Michael Brown in 2014]. We have been doing community relations in a different way for years. We know how to work with leadership, whether that’s minority, Muslim, Black, Jewish.

We know to go to leadership in churches and synagogues to get and receive information to be culturally competent.

TBR: What are you doing to improve the process?

Mention-Lewis: We are doing traffic stop data to look at whether the stops are fair and just. We are doing a community survey to ask how we are doing. How do you know unless you ask?

TBR: Why isn’t the SCPD using body cameras?

Mention-Lewis: The biggest reason is the cost. It’s millions of dollars for the cameras plus the storage. It’s a great idea. We should have them, eventually. They are going to be across the United States.

TBR: What do you think of the justice system?

Mention-Lewis: We are moving in the right direction as a county. The courts should follow suit because we know with sentencing, statistically, nationally, there are issues. All this is, is an opportunity for every aspect of society to look in the mirror and say, ‘what can I do and what knowledge do I need to do my best effort?’

TBR: How do you think the police has responded to protests?

Mention-Lewis: We don’t say we are a community response unit. We are not looking to respond when something happens. That’s not our relationship with the community. We do community relations. We want to have a relationship year-round. When something

happens, that’s not the first time you’re talking to us. Whatever community we’re in, we’re looking to be a part of the solution, working with the community to problem solve. We have people on bike patrol getting to know the protesters at every march.

TBR: Do you think people believe the police are protecting and serving them?

Mention-Lewis: There’s two cultures in policing: the warrior and the guardian. The warrior is what many departments have become.

The guardian is what is being promoted as what we should be. Those are just words. How do our actions correspond with that? Black communities in particular have had more of a warrior treatment.

How do we partner with the community to listen and deal with problems differently in those communities, effectively but differently?

TBR: Do the police serve the variety of communities effectively?

Mention-Lewis: You should be able to sit down with us and express what you feel we should have done differently. We should be willing to listen. It doesn’t mean you’re always going to walk away satisfied. We will try to figure out how to do it better.

TBR: How is the police department doing in recruiting people from all communities?

Mention-Lewis: We worked hard with the community to recruit people of color. In the last recruitment class, 34 percent of the applicants identify as people of color. That hasn’t happened in the history of the department. Right now, there are 2 percent [African Americans] in the department. We’re not perfect, but we are doing the damn thing.

TBR: What are some of the easiest things to change?

Mention-Lewis: All departments should have implicit bias training. Across the country, I didn’t know this, we banned chokeholds 30 years ago and there’s still people doing it today. We need national standards for policing so that when people across the country have other rules, they don’t affect our reputation. We’re not perfect.
