university Patients dance the night away at hospital prom

By Rita J. Egan Rita@tBRnEwspapERs.com Attending a prom is an important milestone for most teenagers, but for children who are dealing with an illness, they may not always get the chance to experience the rite of passage.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital ensured their teenaged inpatients as well as outpatients had the opportunity to enjoy the same special moments their peers do when they held their second annual Children’s Hospital Prom June 10. Many of the teenagers were unable to attend this year’s school prom or a previous year’s, or due to life-limiting illnesses may never have the opportunity.

Maureen Cole, associate director of nursing at the hospital, said 50 patients between ages 12 and 21 along with their guests attended this year’s prom.

For the event, a youth advisory council was created so the patients could be involved in the planning. She said they chose a Hawaiian luau themed prom that featured tiki torches, grass huts, colorful flowers, Polynesian-influenced cuisine and warm breezes on the hospital’s Level 5 patio. The council also met with chefs and picked the food to be served.

The evening began at 4 p.m. with complimentary hair styling, makeup and nail services all provided inside the hospital by the New York Institute of Beauty. Cole said all the children looked incredible, and there was a waiting area, suggested by the council, for those who chose not to get their hair and nails done to play video games and wait for their guests who were getting pampered.

With physicians, nurses and employees from Child Life Services who volunteered their time in attendance, the teenagers enjoyed a night filled with red carpet snapshots, dancing and games such as limbo.

Michael Reed, a 16-year-old outpatient of the hospital who just completed 10th grade at MacArthur High School in Levittown, was part of the youth council. He said it felt great to see the results of the work of the half dozen members.

“It was, the way that I looked at it, not a masterpiece, but it was what me and a few other people invented, what we helped out with, what we created,” he said.

Reed, who attended last year’s prom, felt getting the opinions of the teens by forming a council was a great idea.

“It looked like everyone had a really fun time,” he said.

Cole said the children miss many special

events at school, and despite programs available through Child Life Services, the hospital experience is not a fun one for them.

“It’s our way of giving back,” she said.

“And, having a big prom party for them, so they feel that a hospital is not just a bad place to come to because you come here usually when you are sick.”

Village hall trustees race heats up in Poquott

EgAn RItA@tBRnEwSPAPERS.com While this year’s Poquott Village election for two trustees may not be as contentious as years past, plenty of important community issues remain at the forefront for residents. Plans to build a community dock and communication between the board and villagers are at the top of the list.

During the June 20 election, residents will choose from five candidates to fill two available seats, including two incumbents — Harold Berry and Jeff Koppelson — and three newcomers — Angela Parlatore, Debbie Stevens and John Richardson.

The newcomers

Richardson, a New York City firefighter, and Stevens, owner of Smoothe Laser Center and Medi Spa in East Setauket, both said there is a lack of communication between the current village trustees and residents.

The two are running under the Peace Party ticket and have signs around the village that read “Your Village, Your Decisions.”

“I think there has been a lack of transparency, and there has been a lack of public input,” Richardson said in a phone interview.

Stevens said when she attends village hall meetings, residents are given the opportunity to state their question or comment, but discussions rarely follow.

“In all the 26 years I’ve lived here, I have never felt such an air of such divisiveness,” Stevens said in a phone interview. “And I just want the opportunity to be the voice of the residents, and to bring back peace, and be on a board of trustees who will really listen to the residents’ concerns.”

Richardson, who has lived in Poquott for 16 years, said the village has felt polarized in recent years. He said residents haven’t been included in votes for plans that significantly affect their lives and homes. He said while meetings may be published in the paper, the trustees do not use their email system to notify residents as often as they should.

To get approval to build a community dock, according to Richardson, residents were asked to fill out and return mailed surveys, rather than participate in a vote.

He said those that did not have a resident’s name on it were thrown out.

When it comes to the construction of a

community dock, both feel there needs to be more input from residents.

“It doesn’t matter what I think, it matters what the Poquott residents think,” Stevens said.

Richardson said his background would be an asset to the village, and he wants to work with the mayor as “a conduit for the village and the residents.”

Stevens said her experiences as a business owner and her work with charities, which includes fundraising for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, are assets because she has the listening and communication skills to bring everyone together.

“I would really love to restore the communication between the Poquott residents and the board of trustees and the mayor,” she said.

Parlatore, a full-time patient care specialist and a resident of Poquott for 18 years, said she is the most neutral of all the candidates, as she is not aligned with anyone. However, like Richardson and Stevens she said communication is suffering in the village. She said when it comes to the dock no one is sure what the majority of the residents want. She said the survey prevented many from expressing their true opinions because it wasn’t anonymous, like a vote

would have been.

Parlatore said she feels fortunate to live in Poquott and would like for it to continue to be a wonderful village to live in.

“I feel that I’m good at communicating with people and trying to find common ground between a group of people who are trying to aim in one direction,” she said.

The incumbents

Berry, a 33-year resident of Poquott, and Koppelson, a 45-year resident, are running under the Continuity ticket, and said they should be reelected because they get things done in the village.

Seeking his second term, Koppelson said he hopes the two can continue their progress with the other trustees as well as Mayor Dee Parrish. Berry, the village’s deputy mayor who is currently completing his second term as trustee, said the two plan to work on the community dock, continue improving village roads and cleaning up Poquott beaches among other projects.

Koppelson said the trustees have been making a number of improvements around the village while staying within the budget.

According to the former psychiatric treatment program director, Poquott has had a budget surplus for the third year in a row.

When it comes to village roads, there

have been many improvements as well as plans to resurface more roads in the near future, something Berry said was neglected before Parrish was mayor.

“For 12 years before Dee got in, roads and repairs were basically non-existent, they just weren’t done,” Berry said. “So the roads deteriorated greatly.”

Both candidates said they would be in favor of a community dock, which is still in the planning stages. The project would cost $150,000. Koppelson said while he understands some residents may not want their taxes to increase, he said the trustees can find other ways to pay for it. He said due to the surplus, village taxes will not increase significantly.

“The bottom line is we’ll be able to pay back the principle over the five years just out of the surplus we’re running and saving money by doing a lot of the work ourselves,” Koppelson said.

He also said community members organized an event and donated $16,000 towards paying for the dock, which will pay for the interest cost of the bond for the first two years.

Berry said the dock will allow boaters and fisherman to easily pull up to it to load and unload their boats, unlike now when they must use a dinghy or kayak to get to their boat.

“The boaters and the fisherman are getting older,” Berry said. “It’s just a matter of ease of getting to your boat and safety.”

Koppelson said there are additional benefits to constructing a dock.

“It will be well used but also it will definitely increase real estate prices,” Koppelson said. “I really do think people will benefit from it in the long run.”

The two pushed back on the challengers’ claims village hall doesn’t properly communicate issues and upcoming votes to residents. In addition to sending out emails, Koppelson said the meetings are open and any hearings on a proposed law are published in The Village Times Herald for two consecutive weeks. Videos of the meetings are also posted on the village’s website the following day and minutes are voted on at the next meeting.

The Village of Poquott elections will be held at Poquott’s Village Hall, 45 Birchwood Avenue, June 20 from noon to 9 p.m.

A 29-year-old man from Coram brought 20 truck batteries that turned out to be stolen to Gershow Recycling Corporation and scrapped them for cash June 12, according to police. He was arrested in Port Jefferson Station and charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property. On June 6, a 25-year-old man from East Setauket possessed heroin while on Kennedy Road in Port Jefferson Station, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

On Route 25A in Miller Place June 10, a 32-year-old man from Wading River driving a 2017 Dodge pickup truck was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to police.

During the stop, police discovered the man was driving without a valid driver’s license, possessed heroin and attempted to dispose of the evidence by eating it, police said.

He was arrested and charged with firstdegree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence.

While driving on Bicycle Path in Selden June 12, a 54-year-old woman driving a 2008 Hyundai collided with a 2008 Toyota and fled the scene, according to police. She was located by police less than an hour later on North Evergreen Drive near the intersection of Route 25 in Selden, where they discovered she was driving while intoxicated, police said. She was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

On June 11, a 32-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station driving a 2001 Mercedes on Route 83 in Mount Sinai was pulled over for a traffic stop, where it was discovered he was driving without a valid driver’s license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seconddegree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

When the chamber needed a manager, they called Woods.

Andy Polan, chamber president alongside Woods for the last four years said Woods’ “historical knowledge of the community is pretty amazing from the university to the local history.”

Polan is looking to fill the vacancy with someone who is outgoing, social mediasavvy and “interested in developing the chamber to grow to our next level.”

Woods and his wife, Desiree, are taking some time off to go upstate to his hometown of Dunkirk on Lake Erie with their daughter and granddaughter for a family reunion.

Woods will keep in contact with the chamber and continue to support the new director for the upcoming 18th annual chamber beach barbecue, a networking event in July.

For now, Lefkowitz will miss Woods’ “smile and grin at the other side of the table.”

FEMA-funded storm hardening also continues along the distribution network, with stronger poles, more

wind-resistant wires and automatic switching equipment. Since funding was secured in 2014, this work has improved more than 80 circuits covering more than 270 circuit miles from the Rockaways to Shelter Island.

When completed, the FEMA reliability work will cover 1,025 circuit miles across the service territory.

By Beverly Tyler Growing up in Setauket, first in my grandmother’s house and post office and then in the family home that dates to about 1740, I was aware that my ancestors had lived there for four generations. However, I was not conscious of the details of those families, nor did I realize that the material collection of those four generations was still in the house, packed, in most cases, carefully away in trunks, chests, barrels, boxes, tins and other assorted containers.

My mom died in August of last year, and my family members and I began the process of preparing for an estate sale of the contents of the house. We didn’t have to concern ourServing the Community Since 2000

selves with the house itself as Mom made a wonderful deal with the Three Village Community Trust, which will eventually take ownership of the house and three acres.

As we began opening trunks, boxes and closets, we discovered clothing, china, glassware, photographs and many other objects dating from the 19th century and even a few items dating to the 18th century. One of the discoveries was music composed and written by my great-grandfather, George Washington Hale Griffin, who worked at various times with both Christy’s and Hooley’s Minstrels in New York City and Chicago. I even discovered at least one piece of church music he wrote.

administration when the postmaster position was given to party loyalists, and Corinne ran the general store. In the 1930s they closed the store and donated the building to the local American Legion post. The legion moved the building up Main Street where it sits today near the Setauket Methodist Church.

I treasure the knowledge that my ancestors left so many records of their existence.

However, many of the individual photographs and photo albums, especially those dating to the 19th century, are of people I do not recognize and are, for the most part, unidentified.

Only their clothing, hair styles and poses give hints to their time period and possibly their identity. Everyone I meet who has come face to face with family material from the past says the same thing, “I wish I had asked more questions when I had the opportunity.”

There are many avenues to explore to discover more about the people we love and the ancestors we know so little about. Take the time to learn more about your heritage and the history of the community where you live and label your photographs. The Three Village Historical Society and the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library are both good places to start, with helpful people who have the time, the talent and the desire to help you discover the links to your family and community history.

Swift Jones, who voyaged to China and Japan from 1858 to 1861, in a 150-foot bark built in East Setauket Harbor by her Uncle William Bacon, whose father left England in 1796 to come to Long Island to work in the Blue Point Iron Works. His journal entries were among family papers I researched, even traveling to his hometown in Derbyshire, England, to discover where he came from and why he left.

Many of these archival papers and artifacts, dating to the last three centuries, have been given to various Long Island museums and historical societies, while others are to be included in the estate sale.

What I didn’t realize was that the first two generations to live in the house were direct ancestors of my wife Barbara and that the original part of the house had just three bedrooms, which was home to families that each had five children.

When the house and farm were sold to my ancestors in the first decade of the 19th century, it became home to two generations of nine children, still in a home with three bedrooms. It was not until 1879 that an addition was added with two additional bedrooms upstairs, well after my grandfather and six of his eight siblings had married and moved on.

I knew from an early age that my greatgrandfather, Charles B. Tyler, and my two unmarried great aunts, Annie and Corinne, had remained in the house their entire lives.

My family ran a general store for about 100 years in front of our house on the corner of Main Street and Old Field Road. After Charles died in 1899, Annie ran the post office, except for two terms of the President Cleveland

“This gives kids an opportunity to know that they are not alone in the world, that other kids are there struggling just like they are, trying to keep up with school and doing all the things that are hard to do when you are managing a chronic illness and are a teenager,” Alpers said.

The director attended the prom and said it was delightful.

“A lot of kids were anxious and eager to get to the party,” she said. “They had their hair and nails done, and they felt really special. A lot of the boys were wearing flowered shirts with their suits.”

Alpers said there was a sick child in the hospital who they thought may not be able to attend, but she put on her dress and had her hair and nails done. Later in the day, she received the go-ahead from doctors to attend.

“It was so lovely to see her come down [from the ward],” Alpers said. “She wanted to be there so badly.”

Cole said she hopes the hospital will continue to be able to organize the prom every year.

“I really think it’s important for them to feel special because they really are special to us, all the kids,” she said.

obituaries E. Barbara Delfyett

Mrs. E. Barbara Delfyett of Setauket died May 29, after a battle with cancer.

Barbara, the only child of Valentine and Mary Boesch, graduated from the Academy of the Holy Rosary, earned a Bachelor’s degree at Montclair State University, and a Master’s degree at Teacher’s College, Columbia University.

Barbara moved to Setauket in 1974 with her late husband, Dr. William Delfyett, Jr., to teach at Stony Brook University.

After the birth of her son William, she returned to work in Stony Brook University’s human resources department, where she worked for 20 years. She briefly retired and returned to work in Stony Brook University Hospital administration until retiring in 2015. Barbara was an active vestry member at Caroline Church, as well as a board member of Gallery North.

Barbara’s life was marked by her deep and enduring relationships with neighbors, friends, parishioners and coworkers. Throughout her life she endeavored to create family wherever she went, and she succeeded.

She is survived by her daughter, Amy B. Delfyett, Esq.; her son Dr. William T. Delfyett and his wife Dr. Erica Kar Delfyett; and grandsons Samraj W. Delfyett, Jaidan S. Delfyett, and Taj D. Delfyett.

She is deeply loved and will live on in our hearts and words.

A memorial service will be held at the Caroline Church of Setauket, Saturday, June 17 at 11 a.m.

Kathryn A. Kleaka

Kathryn A. Kleaka, 46, of Port Jefferson died June 10. She was born April 28, 1971 to Diana (Mattucci) Casey and the late Francis X. Casey of Eastchester. She is the beloved wife of 19 years to Kevin Kleaka and loving mother to Patrick and Jonathan.

She is survived by her siblings Edward, Frank, Mary, Patricia and Eileen. She was adored by her nieces and nephews, Brian, Sean, Casey, Colin, Mara Fenton, Danielle Casey, Kate and Julia Powers, Cole and Annelise Kleaka, Sophie and Oliver Bagshaw; and her cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Kathy received her Bachelor’s degree in speech therapy and a Master’s in special education. Her most important job was being the most loving mother of her two boys. Kathy stayed home for 10 years before returning to her career, which is the reason they are such wonderful respectful young adults. Kathy’s other life passion

was in fitness, where she was an inspiration to so many.

Family and friends may visit Thursday, June 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home, 411 Old Town Road, Setauket. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday June 16 at 11 a.m. at Infant Jesus Church.

F r a n c i n e Schoenfeld, a 45year resident of Setauket, died June 4 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Francine is survived by her children Jay (Margaret) of South Setauket, Steven (Dani Chehak) of San Jose CA, and Lori Rebori (James) of Port Jefferson Station.

She was the devoted grandmother of Madeline and Max Schoenfeld and David and Alexis Rebori. Francine was predeceased by her parents Belle and Nat Krive, siblings Alice Krive and Irwin Krive, and her be-

Francine and David created a beautiful life together, raised a warm and loving family, filling their lives with community, family and the good works of their hands and hearts. Francine’s hobbies included painting, knitting, crocheting, marquetry, attending concerts in Stony Brook and Port Jefferson, and spending time at West Meadow Beach with her friends.

A service was held at Temple Isaiah in Stony Brook June 5 and was followed by the burial at Beth Moses Cemetery in West Babylon.

Marianne Ganshow

Marianne Ganshow, 89, formerly of Setauket, died in Cottonwood, Arizona on June 4. She was buried with her beloved husband, John F. Ganshow who passed in 2006.

It was on Long Island where John and Marianne created a life together. Marianne was an avid gardener, photographer, artist and mother of five — Jennifer Grace Watt, John Christopher, Beth Kaminski, Matthew Alden and Theodore James.

In addition to her children, she leaves behind seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, her sister Virginia Rosen and her brother John McConnell.

Remembering cello teacher Olga Zilboorg

By Thomas IrvIne Olga Zilboorg, who taught generations of cello students in the Three Village area and Port Jefferson for more than 50 years, died surrounded by friends and music, April 22. She was 83 years old.

Zilboorg grew up in Mexico City, where she began cello lessons at the age of nine. Her values as a musician and a person, never separate, were formed by her remarkable teachers there, many of them émigrés from persecution and war in Europe. It was her mission for the rest of her life to live what she learned from them and pass it on to younger generations.

She moved to the United States to study, first at the University of Kansas and then at the Manhattan School of Music. After graduation she joined the St. Louis Symphony. She was one of the first women to play full time in a major U.S. symphony orchestra. While in St. Louis she was a member of the St. Louis Piano Trio, with whom she toured in the off-season to every corner of the U.S., including remote small towns from the Texas panhandle to backwoods Vermont.

She left St. Louis to pursue a solo ca-

reer. After well-received debuts in London, Amsterdam and Vienna, she returned to New York. She worked as a freelancer, spending a memorable year in the pit orchestra of the hit musical “Hello Dolly!” In 1965 she married Thomas Irvine Jr., who taught engineering at Stony Brook University. She was to make her home here for 52 years, first in Stony Brook and then Port Jefferson.

She soon began a private cello studio. For more than 50 years she taught hundreds of local children.

She was involved in musical life at SBU from the beginning. During the years, says Peter Winkler, professor emeritus of music, “Olga has become a central figure in our musical community, both the community around the Stony Brook music department and the larger community of musicians and teachers throughout the North Shore and eastern Long Island. What is particularly important to us here at Stony Brook is how she served as a bridge and a connector between these communities.”

She was an early faculty member of the Stony Brook pre-college music program, and took generations of graduate students in the music department under

her wing as helpers in her own teaching, accompanists, musical partners and friends.

Throughout her years of teaching she remained active as a performer, giving recitals both locally and further afield, including in Mexico, Yugoslavia and the then-Soviet Union. She was a founder of the North Shore Pro Musica, performed often on the East End and played regularly with the Long Island Philharmonic.

In 2009, on her retirement from teaching, she received the Town of Brookhaven Office of Women’s Services Visual and Performing Arts Award. That year the New York State Senate passed a resolution honoring her for “her community service, constructive involvement, constant dignity, good grace and humor.”

Her retirement was short-lived. Even if her last years were overshadowed by illness, she was never without at least a few informal students or a musical project of some kind. She played the cello herself until the last weeks of her life.

She is survived by her daughter Tatiana Irvine; son Thomas Irvine; stepdaughters Jill Irvine, Phoebe Irvine and Sadi Delaney; nieces Peggy Schaeffer, Jennifer Fiess and Cathy Foster; nephews Jimmy and Ricky Cato; and three grandchildren — Hannah, Emmy and Bastian Irvine.

Eddie Munoz, Matt Grillo combine for six straight goals as Patriots power past Pittsford for state title

In a come-from-behind rally, the Ward Melville boys lacrosse team scored six straight goals — five during regulation and one in sudden death overtime — to claim the program’s first Class A state championship title since 2013 with a 10-9 win over Pittsford.

In the final minute of regulation, senior Eddie Munoz scored three straight, and Matt Grillo tied it, then scored the game-winner on a solo dodge from behind the cage with one second left in overtime, during the June 10 game at St. John Fisher College.

It was the ninth state title for Ward Melville (20-2), which finished the 2017 season on a 15-game win streak, and the first for head coach Jay Negus, who took over the program when Mike Hoppey retired following the 2013 title. Hall of Fame coach Joe Cuozzo won the first seven.

ing we’re the ‘comeback kids’ because we had a great second-half performance in each game we played, but that was a little too close for me,” Negus said, laughing.

“We do what we have to do. Eddie [Munoz] is our emotional senior leader and he took over the game, he took over the locker room. He has the ability to rally and lead people to a place you can’t get to yourself.

He got us to where we needed to be.”

For Grillo, who was also celebrating his birthday, those last minutes made for a dramatic day with extreme swings of emotion.

“This is the best birthday present I could ask for,” he said. “It went from the worst birthday of my life to the best birthday of my life within 53 seconds.”

Ward Melville was trailing 9-4 with 3:43 left to play when Grillo received a pass from senior Liam Davenport to close the gap. Junior faceoff specialist Michael Giaquinto, who won 19 of 22 faceoffs, won the ensuing battle at the ‘X’, and every one thereafter down the stretch.

“At that point, there was no margin for error,” Giaquinto said. “I knew I had to win them all.”

“My teammates made great plays, and I felt, being a captain, that I owed my teammates a service,” Munoz said. “I told them I wasn’t going to let them lose.”

He scored his first goal on a sidearm shot, tallied a man-up goal on a feed from Grillo after a Pittsford slash call with 34 seconds left, and after a Giaquinto faceoff win and pass down the alley, scored his third 7.4 seconds later, to pull the Patriots within one, 9-8.

“The goals were all reacting to the situation,” Munoz said. “It was the heat of the moment and I saw my chances and took them. It feels amazing to pull through for my team, but I give all the credit to my teammates for supporting me all year and for setting up those plays.”

He agreed with his head coach, who said his Patriots never counted themselves out, having preached all season about never giving up, and knowing Ward Melville has always been more of a second-half team.

“It was honestly scary, I was a little nervous at first, but we stayed poised, kept our composure and played hard until the final whistle,” Munoz said, “And now we’re champions, so it paid off.”

Giaquinto kept the ball rolling with another faceoff win, and after one errant shot, Grillo got open and converted a pass from senior Andrew Lockhart to tie the game with just eight seconds left.

Lockhart said they were running his play — called “22 Pop” for his jersey number and eventual position shift.

“I popped, they collapsed,” he said. “I dropped it off to Grillo, who of course finished it. It’s something we’ve done all sea-

son. But without Mike Giaquinto, we would have lost the game. Faceoffs never get credit, but that kid put the team on his back.”

Early in overtime, after a long Ward Melville possession, goalkeeper Gavin Catalano (11 saves) made a stop on Munoz and the Panthers (19-2) headed the oth-

er way. They had a clean look, but Ward Melville’s senior goalkeeper Perry Cassidy made his best and most important save to give Ward Melville the ball one more time.

Munoz shot it wide, putting the ball in Grillo’s stick on the restart.

“In the moment, I wasn’t thinking,” Gril-

lo said. “Coach called a play, and I didn’t think there was enough time for it. I saw that there was no slide, and I got to the cage and finished. It was the most amazing moment of my life. So many emotions were running through my mind at that moment.

It’s something that I will never forget.”

Big Democratic donors dwarf GOP spenders

We’re sporting success Athletic success was contagious on the North Shore this spring.

We boasted 13 boys lacrosse, 11 baseball, eight boys tennis, 13 girls lacrosse and 11 softball squads in the playoffs this season. Local teams like Comsewogue boys lacrosse, Ward Melville baseball, Ward Melville boys tennis, Smithtown East girls lacrosse and Walt Whitman softball reached the semifinals. Seven of those 56 postseason qualifiers went on to be crowned Suffolk County champions, including the Commack baseball team, which grabbed the program’s first title in 20 years, and Mount Sinai’s softball team, which won its third straight county final.

Ward Melville boys lacrosse and the girls lacrosse teams from Mount Sinai and Middle Country all nabbed Long Island championship titles, and all three won their state semifinal games. The Patriots and Mustangs won state titles. And after the Middle Country Mad Dogs won the program’s first county, Long Island and state semifinal games, the girls narrowly lost in overtime, after the nation’s No. 1 lacrosse recruit and New York’s new all-time leading scorer Jamie Ortega netted the equalizer with just 1:37 left in regulation.

Districts like Mount Sinai, Shoreham-Wading River and Ward Melville have been dominating team and individual sports, creating powerhouse programs. Besides posting playoff teams in nearly every sport, Shoreham-Wading River junior Katherine Lee won a myriad of titles across the track and field season. She became a part of history when she and three other teammates swept the top three spots in the 3,000-meter state qualifier run, and placed second in the state with a new personal best.

Port Jefferson sophomore Shane DeVincenzo placed sixth overall and fifth in the Federation at the state golf tournament. Northport track and field’s 4x800 relay team placed first in the state and Federation finals, and Huntington’s Lawrence Leake placed third in the state track and field finals in the 400 high hurdles. His teammate Kyree Johnson won a state title in the 400 dash and third in the long jump, and led the Blue Devils to win the Federation team title, toppling every public, private and parochial high school in New York.

A load of other talented track and field standouts across our schools placed in the county finals and state qualifier meets. We’ve seen more and more talent across every team and individual sport with each season, and our schools continue to sneak into national rankings, perhaps creating budding dynasties for years to come.

With the end of another successful season, we want to recognize all the hard work and dedication put in by our student-athletes, many of whom excel to a similar level inside the classroom, and their coaches who help lead the way. Every student needs some guidance, and it’s clear guidance from coaches this season helped bring these athletes great success.

To overcome any kind of competition, students spend years learning their chosen sport or sports, practicing skills and developing their physical fitness. It takes a lot of patience and positive thinking to not give up at one loss or the next, and trust that the years of sacrifice will pay off.

We’re proud to have covered those wrapping up their high school careers who have represented our six paper’s various coverage areas with class and pride, and we look forward to seeing what the returners can do next year. Congratulations, and keep up the good work.

Now might be a good time to set the record straight on the funding sources of our 2016 presidential candidates. Readers may be greatly surprised to learn, not only did Hillary Clinton ($1.2 billion) outraise Donald Trump ($600 million) by 2-1, but it was she not he that benefited exponentially more from dollar dumps from billionaires. And, there’s more equally significant info that may have escaped notice. The Federal Election Commission reported that Mr. Trump broke records for small donations of $200 and under.

Here are some enlightening facts offered for those raising their partisan fists over “too much money” in politics and the Citizens United ruling.

In October 2016, an analysis of donors by the Washington Post found “that a hundred individuals and labor unions were responsible

for a fifth of all of Clinton’s donations ($240 million) — five donors were responsible for one out of every 17 dollars contributed ...”

They were, “S. Donald Sussman, a hedge fund manager, J.B. Pritzker a venture capitalist and brother of Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker and his wife, Univision chairman Haim Saban and his wife, George Soros, and Slimfast founder S. Daniel Abraham.”

In addition, according to Bloomberg News, Hillary Clinton outraised her rival among billionaires by a stunning ratio of 20-1.

The former secretary of state got $21.1 million from 17 U.S. donors on Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index.

The former real estate developer got $1.02 million from members of that same group.

Meanwhile, Trump smashed all records for receiving money from small donors. Those sending

checks for $200 or less contributed about $239 million. That amount eclipsed President Obama’s $219 million and surpassed both Clinton ($137 million) and Bernie Sanders ($100 million) combined. Isn’t this just the kind of “grassroots” financial participation the anti-Citizens United crew is howling for?

Perhaps this information can offer an opportunity for those chanting “too much big money in politics” mantra to demonstrate their cause is both principled and bipartisan. A crystal clear, equitable, ethical testimony to those two virtues would be if the activists raised both their placards and voices in front of the businesses or homes of the five elitist, influenceseeking, Democratic billionaires cited above. We’ll keep a sharp eye out, but won’t hold our breaths.

TrumpCare is not a health care bill I recently received an email from Congressman Lee Zeldin, informing me of the Congressional Budget Office’s scoring of the TrumpCare bill in which he states that it will save $119 billion over the next 10 years.

He avoids mentioning that these savings will come with the loss of health insurance for 23 million people. In the GOP bill that Zeldin strongly supports, Medicaid will be cut dramatically, and getting insurance if you have pre-existing conditions will no longer be guaranteed if you have a gap in your coverage due to some hardship. In addition, pre-existing conditions can force you into a

high-risk pool with concomitant large increases in premiums, something not allowed in ObamaCare.

TrumpCare is not a “health care” bill, and it was not crafted by consulting with health care professionals to solve the difficult problem of making affordable health care available to as many people as possible. The underlying goal of the GOP Congress has been to repeal the tax on wealthy people that was included in ObamaCare for a good reason.

As a society, we agree to fund the government to provide for the common defense and for the common good. Health care for each of us is part of this common good,

as none of us wants to deny care when someone is suffering. We do not share this burden equally, and those with more resources should pay more of the costs. Zeldin is painting TrumpCare in different terms, but it is clear to any objective analysis, that it will deprive more needy people of health care to get rid of the tax on more wealthy people that ObamaCare imposed.

I encourage Zeldin to not listen to the 17 percent of the American public that approves of Trumpcare but rather join the large majority of people who have more compassion for their fellow citizens.

Time to increase voter participation in NY As I begin writing this, it is Memorial Day. A day we honor the memories of those who gave their lives defending government of the people, by the people and for the people. Their sacrifices will be in vain unless we the living keep constant watch to see that democracy becomes a reality and not just a slogan.

Ideally, all citizens must have the opportunity to vote for candidates and public policies of their choice. Sadly, we are very far from achieving that ideal in New York State. New York ranks 41st among

the 50 states in voter participation.

Other states have shown that voter turnout can be increased by such measures as early voting, automatic voter registration, electronic poll books, allowing changes of party registration closer to election day (currently six months before in New York) and restoring parolee voting rights. Improvements such as these may have been difficult or impossible in previous years, but new information technologies now make them entirely realistic.

As a step toward modernization, an Early Voting Bill (S2950)

and Computer Generated Voter Rolls (S2788) have been introduced in the NY State Senate. Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan has blocked both of these bills in his role as chair of the Rules Committee. f you’re reading this on a cellphone somewhere, please stop. No, seriously. You can read it on your computer or in an actual copy of the paper but, please, stop reading this and look around you.

OK, are you back in your office or at your home?

It’s disturbing how often our cellphones become an escape from the here and now.

I get it: We’re waiting in line to order a hamburger and we want to do something, so we

In the process, we’ve lost sight of what’s around us. It’s as if we’ve covered our eyes with electronic blinders

and we can’t be bothered to pay attention to our surroundings.

I was recently driving through town and noticed a woman walking a large, chocolate Labrador along the sidewalk.

His rear legs were pointed out as he walked. As I drove by, I noticed that the woman held the leash on her wrist as she was completely absorbed in her cellphone. Seconds later, the dog relieved himself on the sidewalk while trying to keep up with his oblivious owner. The dog looked uncomfortable as he tried to multitask.

I realize dogs are an enormous responsibility and that every time someone walks a dog, that person may not feel the urge to dedicate his or her complete attention to a conversation with the family pet.

“Hey, Tigger, look at that squirrel over there. Oh, wow, there’s a bunny.

Do you see the bunny? Oh, wait, there are two bunnies.”

“What do you smell, Fifi? Was there another dog here a few hours ago and

did he leave you a little scent present?”

We don’t have to connect with our pets every moment of every day. But wouldn’t it be nice if we were able to pay them some attention while we were out walking them? After all, how often do they come over to us when we’ve had a tough day, or give us their paw—or offer us companionship?

Everywhere we go, we have the opportunity to tune out the world around us and surf our way to somewhere else.

It’s thrilling to travel halfway around the world and send pictures instantly of a magnificent sunset, or the Eiffel Tower or a three-toed sloth.

We can be connected to almost anyone almost anytime.

That shouldn’t give us license to disconnect from the people and the pets around us. It’s the economic concept of opportunity cost applied to our attention. The opportunity cost of paying attention to what’s on our phone is that we ignore our surroundings.

Remember those public service

announcements which said, “It’s 10 o’clock, do you know where your children are?” Maybe we should have messages that pop up on our phone suggesting that “It’s 6 o’clock, do you know where you are,” or maybe, “It’s 6 o’clock, pick up your head and check out the here and now (or H&N).”

Maybe we should also develop an H&N logo we can put on clothing or notebooks. It can even become a verbal reminder to our companions.

“Class,” a teacher might say as she noticed her students taking furtive glances at their phones, “H&N, right?

Let’s learn the material now, while you’re here.”

H&N may be a way of encouraging us to be where our bodies are at the moment, and not where the internet has taken us.

Dogs, meanwhile, shouldn’t have to multitask while they’re relieving themselves. If Fluffy could talk, she might say, “For goodness’ sake, H&N, I need a moment here.”

lmost everyone likes movies. But have you ever fantasized about making a movie? Now I’m not talking about a home movie of the kids swimming or starring in a play.

I mean the big stuff, with lights, camera, action, Hollywood director’s chair, firsttier actors and bullhorn. Well, our newspapers are now in the filmmaking business, and it was history that made us do it.

In fact, they are remarkably relevant, as aspects of the Constitution are regularly part of our political discussions today. For what were the Patriots fighting, putting their lives and possessions on the line, bleeding and dying? And what are we doing

History makes for great storytelling, as the producers of “TURN” on AMC discovered over the last four years. Their version of history was inspired by fact but strung together by fiction. So on the anniversary of the Setauket Spy Ring last year, we filmed a dramatic narrative of the Culper Spies wholly based on fact.

To our great delight, that short film, which is on our website and YouTube, Facebook and other places, won first prize from the New York Press Association for video made by a newspaper.

Encouraged by our success and entranced by the many triumphant and also heart-wrenching stories that happened right here on Long Island some 240 years ago, we are making a full-length film this year, and we begin shooting locally this weekend. This time we are going all the way, with a cast of professional producers, directors, actors and first-rate equipment. The set is a work of art in itself, a recreation of the fort in the Battle of Long Island in Brooklyn Heights. We have 135 re-enactors coming from distant parts — Saratoga, New York; members of our own Long Island Third New York regiment; Murrysville, Pennsylvania; and Fair-

field, Connecticut — to stage the battle that almost lost the Revolutionary War before it even truly began. They will be carrying authentic muskets, shooting gunpowder, spilling blood and gore profusely (thanks to our famous special effects person) and otherwise re-creating history. Best of all about this film, we are delving into the lives and personalities of the historic figures whose actions made victory possible. Be assured that we are characterizing them authentically, both colonists and British, fleshing out what details have come down to us from historians and corroborated by our local historical societies.

Several local organizations, institutions and residents are helping to support and underwrite this ambitious production: The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, the Three Village Historical Society, The State University at Stony Brook, the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA), Theatre Three and the law firm of Glynn Mercep & Purcell.

Some support is not so local, perhaps including the Fraunces Tavern Museum in New York City and the Nathan Hale Homestead Museum in Coventry, Connecticut. Many places have indicated their interest in showing the

film, including some local teachers and administrators. What a painless way to teach local history.

As we have been reaching out to the many people involved in this venture, we have come across many enriching details. For example, the SherwoodJayne Farm, where some of the action takes place, has original planking from Founding Spy Benjamin Tallmadge’s home, the Brewster House was a tavern and home of a cousin of fellow Culper Spy, Caleb Brewster, historic Benner’s Farm where we are doing some of the filming, comes down to us over the centuries, and the 1709 Thompson House, home of a local doctor, is one the beautiful preservations of the WMHO. And by the way, the Caroline Church on the Green in Setauket has a musket ball lodged in its steeple.

History is the glue that holds a community together, and our particular history is the platform on which our nation was built. We are proud to bring these stories to you on film, as well as in print, and we invite any organizations, businesses and residents who might like to be credited with making this production a reality to contact us directly. Be Aware of Challenges to Managing Retirement Income

When you retire, will your cost of living decline? Some of your expenses may indeed drop, but others won’t. Plus, you may have some new ones to consider. So, all in all, it’s a good idea to think about ways to boost your retirement savings now, before you’re retired.

And once you do retire, you’ll need to be adept at managing your income. But whether saving today or planning for tomorrow, you should familiarize yourself with the key financial challenges you will face during your retirement years.

Specifically, consider these areas: • Longevity – Obviously, the longer your retirement lasts, the more money you’ll need. And you could be retired for quite some time. A 65-year-old man, on average, is expected to live another 17.9 years, while a 65-year-old woman can anticipate another 20.5 years, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. With this type of potential longevity in mind, you’ll want to contribute as much as you can afford to your retirement plans, such as your IRA and 401(k), while you’re working. Then, when you are retired and start tapping into your investment portfolio, you will need to create a sustainable withdrawal rate – one that doesn’t push you into the “danger zone” of possibly outliving your resources.

• Health care – Once you enter your retirement years, your health care costs are all but certain to rise, even with Medicare. In fact, the average annual out-of-pocket health care cost for a household between 65 and 74 years old is $4,383 – about 11% of total household spending, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. And these costs rise substantially for those over 74. To help cope with these costs, you’ll need a reasonable amount of liquidity in your portfolio.

• Long-term care – You may never need to stay in a nursing home or receive services from a home health care worker. But you are taking somewhat of a gamble if you don’t prepare for these long-term care costs – because they are high. In fact, the annual average cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $92,000, according to the 2016 Cost of Care Survey produced by Genworth, a financial services company. Medicare typically pays very little of these expenses, but a financial professional can help you find an appropriate way of coping with these types of costs.

• Inflation – We’ve had low inflation the past several years, but it hasn’t gone away entirely, and it won’t disappear when you’re retired, either. Even a mild rate of inflation can, over time, seriously erode your purchasing power. To combat the effects of inflation, you’ll need to own at least some growth-oriented investments.

• Market volatility – The financial markets will bounce up and down during your retirement years, just as they did when you were working. The big difference? You have less time to recover – and you don’t want to withdraw from your investments when their price is down. However, you can help avoid this necessity by maintaining enough income-producing vehicles in your portfolio; these types of investments usually fluctuate much less in value than stocks and stock-based vehicles.

By being aware of these issues, both before and during your retirement, you can prepare for them – and preparation is key to managing your income, as it is in all walks of life.
