Suffolk County’s own credit rating was lowered in October 2015 from A+ to A, making Brookhaven’s upgrade more noteworthy. Romaine called this “the first time in a while” the town has received a AAA rating.

The supervisor also vowed during last week’s board meeting to chip in to pay for a luncheon for members of the town’s finance department.

Setauket’s Ivan Kalina leaves behind stories of perseverance By yvette Panno Ivan Kalina, 84, of Setauket passed away peacefully the morning of May 27 following a brief illness.

Originally born in Kosice, Czechoslovakia, in 1932, to beloved parents Geza and Ilonka, Kalina’s life was defined by courage, strength and resilience. First as a European Jewish Holocaust survivor, later as an escaped refugee from Communism to America, his story shaped not only his life, but also the history of a generation.

During World War II, Kalina was a young child who managed to survive the Nazis’ early invasion of Czechoslovakia and the deportation of the Jews to concentration camps through the help of Christian friends and false papers.

In the final years of the war, he separated from his mother and father and went to Budapest, Hungary, to hide in an apartment with relatives just blocks from Gestapo headquarters that was bombed day and night by American, Russian and British forces.

Returning to Kosice, his was among the only Jewish families to survive.

Although his education was delayed for years by the war, as a testimony to his determination, in 1956 he graduated as the valedictorian of his medical school class from Charles University in Prague, as a pediatrician. That same year, he married his beautiful wife Vera Atlas, a histopathologist, in Kosice.

With the onslaught of Communist persecution of both Jews and democratic sympathizers, Ivan and Vera realized they could never be free in their oppressive Homeland.

In 1965, they left their close families and planned a daring escape through the Yugoslavia border into Austria, until they could manage a flight to New York City with their two young children, Peter and Yvette. They came to this country with two suitcases and $200. With prison sentences awaiting them if they returned to Czechoslovakia, they dedicated themselves to making new lives. Ivan and Vera worked long hours at Bellevue Hospital and New York University while he took his medical board exams in English – his fifth fluent language.

Ivan’s favorite expression – said with characteristic humor and positive spirit – was “that’s why I came to America!”

To this country, Kalina brought with him the grit, charm and fun-loving outlook to be successful. His career spanned a private practice in pediatrics in Rocky Point as well as medical director of Little Flower Orphanage in Wading River, associate professor at Stony Brook University, and attending physician at both St. Charles Hospital and John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson.

Always athletic and tanned, he was a fiercely competitive, daily tennis player and longtime member of the Harbor Hills Country Club near his original home in Port Jefferson. A perfect day was sitting

north Shore resident Ivan Kalina is remembered by many as a man with adventure. in the sun near the backyard pool reading a newspaper. A remarkable skier until the age of 70, he loved to travel and took multiple trips out to his condo in Vail, Colorado, and travelled several times a year around the world.

His love of children was no greater than that for his five grandchildren, who called

him Papi, of whom he was most proud: Olivia, Mia, Sydney, Jake and Sam. He is also survived by children Peter Kalina, MD; Yvette Kalina Panno; daughter-in-law Michelle Kalina; and long-loved partner Carolyn Van Helden.

Police Blotter Incidents & arrests through the end of May Drugs in Miller Place

On May 27 at about 6 p.m., a 37-year-old man from Miller Place seated in a 2009 Acura on Tyler Avenue possessed heroin, police said. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. At the same location and time, a 46-year-old man from Middle Island possessed heroin and two different medications without prescriptions, according to police. He was arrested as well and charged with fourth-degree possession of a narcotic drug and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

At a home on Stanley Drive in Centereach, a 24-year-old man was found to possess cannabis at about 9 p.m. on May 25, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

How did those get in there?

A 34-year-old man from Wappenger Falls was found in possession of multiple bags of heroin at the 6th Precinct while being arrested on an unrelated charge stemming from an incident on Horseblock Road in Selden at about 10:30 p.m. on May 28, police said. He was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Garden-variety criminal

A statue and decorative planters were stolen from the front yard of a home on Christian Avenue in Stony Brook at about noon on May 14, police said.

Back to work

Between November 2011 and December 2013, a 30-year-old man from Selden collected unemployment fraudulently, according to police. He was arrested at a home on Paula Boulevard at about 10:30 a.m. on May 27 and charged with fourthdegree insurance fraud.

Dirty job

On May 26 at the Walgreens on Route 112 in Medford, a 44-year-old man from Middle Island stole three bottles of Clorox bleach and a bottle of Tide laundry detergent, police said. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Someone tried to exit the Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket without paying for a television and a pair of pliers at about 2:30 p.m. on May 29, according to police.

Know your parole

A 32-year-old man from Coram was in violation of his parole at about 2 a.m. on May 29, according to police. He was on Main Street in Port Jefferson when he was arrested and charged with the parole violation.

Rock-throwing spree

The rear passenger side window of a 2012 Jeep parked near a home on Avondale Drive in Centereach was smashed by someone at about 8 p.m. on May 27. On nearby Salem Road about 30 minutes later, the rear window of a 2006 Toyota was smashed and a rock was thrown through the driver side window of a 1997 Honda, according to police.

Missing drugs from CVS

Various over-the-counter medications were stolen from the CVS Pharmacy on Middle Country Road in Selden at about 1:30 p.m. on May 28, according to police.

It’s a fixer-upper

Household items were stolen from the Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket at about 2 p.m. on May 28, police said.

Three Village native Dave Calone ready to represent Your turn

BY DonnA nEwMAn Are you looking for optimism? I recently attended a Meet and Greet and met Dave Calone, who is seeking to be the Democratic nominee for New York’s 1st District in the U.S. Congress. In a confusing and muddled political season, I’ve found a candidate I can wholeheartedly support. Calone has vast stores of knowledge and experience that he is willing to share. And the icing on the cake: He is one of our own.

Raised in Mount Sinai, he graduated from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in Port Jefferson and now lives in Setauket where he and his wife Kate — who directs the Open Door Exchange furniture program of the Setauket Presbyterian Church — are raising their three children. If elected, he will be the district’s first representative from the Three Village/North Shore area in more than 100 years.

His résumé is stellar: He has an economics degree from Princeton (where he was twice elected student body president) and is an honors graduate of Harvard Law School. Calone worked as a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice, helping to prosecute international

Patriotism on full display at Stony Brook vets home

BY Alex Petroski Elected officials, religious leaders, volunteers, family and friends came together Friday to honor United States military veterans ahead of Memorial Day. The annual ceremony at the Long Island State Veterans Home on the campus of Stony Brook University is special every year, but the 2016 version carried some extra significance. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the facility’s opening, and the home also celebrated the opening of their new wing on the north side of the building.

The home is dedicated to serving the more than 250,000 veterans who live on Long Island. Their relationship with Stony Brook University’s medical facilities has been a winning combination for the care of veterans for a quarter of a century, providing skilled nursing services that many veterans wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

“President John F. Kennedy once said that ‘a nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers,’” executive director of the veterans home Fred Sganga said as he addressed the crowd Friday. “Freedom is our cause, but freedom does not come free

and many have paid the ultimate price. The America we know would not be the same if it were not for the brave men and women we honor today on Memorial Day.” New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli (D) delivered the keynote address Friday.

He honored his father Nicholas DiNapoli, a World War II veteran who passed away earlier this week.

His funeral was Thursday.

“A part of me said, ‘I’m not quite up to getting out there yet,’” DiNapoli said. “But I thought about my dad’s service and I said ‘I have to honor my father by being with his veteran colleagues today.’”

DiNapoli thanked the veterans in attendance for their service and reiterated the importance of honoring and supporting them every day, but especially on Memorial Day. State Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) said it was the most moving speech he’d heard DiNapoli give.

“When I think about the freedoms that we have, I too want to say thank you,” Flanagan said. “I’m humbled to be able to stand here with you.”

Arrowhead Elementary School’s sixth-grade chorus organized a donation drive for the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cancer unit.

Performers set stage for donations Arrowhead Elementary School’s sixthgrade chorus lent their melodic voices to a worthy cause this spring, raising funds and donations for the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cancer unit.

The students collected 53 DVDs and $485 in iTunes gift cards to be donated to the children receiving both inpatient and

outpatient pediatric cancer treatment at the hospital.

The group was inspired to organize the fundraiser after they started preparing the song “Truly Brave” for the school’s spring concert. The song was featured on the “Today” show’s “Shine a Light” series and was performed by Cyndi Lauper and Sara Bareilles to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer. The students were so moved by the song’s intent that they came up with the idea for the fundraiser.

Lessons in wax Nassakeag Elementary School fourthgraders in Jennifer Betz’s class stepped back in time to showcase historic figures from the Revolutionary War time period in a school Living Wax Museum.

As part of the project, the students se-

lected individuals who made a significant impact during this time frame and studied their biographical information.

On the day of the museum, they dressed up as the individual they studied and pretended to be set in wax until a visitor pushed their activation buttons. Once these buttons were pushed, the students came to life and shared their research, speaking in the first person.

Eugene W. Ebert, 80, of Stony Brook, died on May 2. He was born in Bay Shore, the son of Ernest and Louise Ebert.

Setauket salutes vets as rain cancels Memorial Day parade

By Kevin Redding Under cloudy and inclement weather, a small crowd of residents gathered at Setauket Veterans Memorial Park for a brief yet powerful ceremony held by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3054 to pay respects to fallen servicemen and women. Even though all plans for Three Village’s annual Memorial Day parade were canceled due to threats of severe rain, the strong group of veterans - of wars ranging from World War II all the up to the War in Iraq - that make up Post 3054 would’ve carried out the ceremony no matter what.

“We’d come down here if it was a rainstorm and it was just six of us out here,” said Post Commander John C.T. Still, who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. “Without the men and women who sacrificed their lives over the past 100 years, America wouldn’t be America and it’s important to remember that.”

As leader of the ceremony, Still set the events in motion with a reading of a resonating poem.

“It is the veteran, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion,” he shouted. “...it is the veteran, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.” The ceremony included a prayer, the laying of ceremonial wreaths by veterans and local representatives, and a rifle salute. Arleen Gargiulo, a longtime East Setauket resident and contributor to Post 3054, united the crowd with energetic renditions of the national anthem and “God Bless America.”

American Legion for nearly 60 years, Andrade recognizes how important it is for organizations like the VFW to exist. “We help veterans. We have fundraisers, we attend all the ceremonies and we support each other. I’ve been fortunate to go to Walter

Reed Military Medical Center and give out shirts and hats to the Marine Corps groups. The men and women are super. They have severe injuries but great attitudes. Every generation is the best generation, I tell them.

does a great job.”

After the ceremony, Still invited everyone back to the Post 3054 cabin for some hot dogs and drinks. Residents were happy to celebrate their freedoms with those who made them possible.

Patriots look to redeem early-season loss in finals

By Desirée Keegan The game may not have started off the way they wanted, but it sure did end like it.

The No. 4 Ward Melville boys’ lacrosse team turned a no-score first-quarter Wednesday into a 4-1 halftime lead, and held No. 9 Walt Whitman scoreless until the final seconds of the game, earning a trip back to the Suffolk County Class AA finals with a 9-3 win.

“We’re really excited,” junior midfielder Dominic Pryor said. “We worked so hard for this all season and we can’t wait for counties.”

After the first, senior attack and midfielder Connor Grippe said his team knew it needed to figure out a way to turn things around.

“The first quarter we didn’t play Ward Melville lacrosse,” he said. “Our coaches keep preaching to us to play a full four quarters and we really came back and put it all together.

We were hitting our shots, we were moving the ball, our defense played outstanding, our

goalie D.J. Kellerman played a hell of a game and we won the faceoffs.”

Grippe said the coaches made some adjustments to the Patriots’ pre-existing zone plays, which helped them get some open shots and inside looks.

Ward Melville head coach Jay Negus credits his assistant coaches Chris Murphy and Chris Muscarella for the turnaround.

“The defense has been outstanding, the faceoffs have been outstanding — and it’s because of them and the kids buying into what they’re talking about,” he said. “Our offense did a nice job once they started clicking to relieve some of that pressure, but I’m so appreciative of the two assistant coaches I have because they really, on the defensive end of the field, do an outstanding job.”

Junior goalkeeper Kellerman made two saves in the first, and tipped another shot upward to open the second. At the 8:18 mark, the Patriots’ opponent finally found the back

of the cage for a 1-0 lead.

The Patriots’ intensity was there in the first, but it didn’t match that of the Wildcats.

On top of that, dropped passes in the offensive zone and turnovers all over the field deflated the team. But that all changed in the second quarter.

The Patriots pride themselves on their defense, and the boys held it down on that end of the field following the first goal.

At the 4:35 mark, the offense repaid the defense for its hard work, when Grippe fired a shot from 10 yards out to tie the game. He then assisted freshman attack Dylan Pallonetti on his shot from the same position, but on the opposite side of the cage.

“Once we got one, we rallied from there,” Pallonetti said. “I feel like we did a great job riding and clearing. Our defense did great.

They stripped the ball a lot, got the ball in the offensive zone and then we did our job.”

At the 1:51 mark, Pryor snagged a rebound off a save in midair and buried the ball for a 3-1 lead.

“As soon as we figured out their defense, we started putting in goals and that’s really when we started rolling, and knew what we needed to do the rest of the game,” he said.

Junior attack Andrew Lockhart forced a turnover and, on a fast break, fed the ball to Pallonetti in front of the net for what proved to be the game-winner to end the scoring for the first half.

Grippe added two more assists on the night, Pryor scored his second goal and Lockhart, Eddie Munoz, Chris Grillo and Zach Hobbes each added a goal. With 33 seconds left, Walt Whitman managed to score back-to-back goals, but ran out of time to make a comeback.

“Last year, we unfortunately lost in the counties in double overtime, so anything for us to get back to that position is great, and hopefully we’ll come out on top,” Grippe said.

Ward Melville is back in a familiar position, but this time faces a new opponent. Smithtown East topped the Patriots last season, but since the Bulls fell to Connetquot in overtime

in the their semifinal game on Wednesday, Ward Melville will instead be facing that team, to whom they lost twice in overtime the last two seasons.

“I definitely think we will have to adjust,” Grippe said. “It’s a revenge game for us. We’re always fired up to play them; they’re a big rival and it should be a good game.”

He said their faceoff player is arguably one of the best in the county, so his team will need to game plan to stop him and limit transitions.

Negus said his team would be prepared for its June 1 matchup at Stony Brook University at 8 p.m. against an athletic, strong opponent, but results of the game were not available by press time. Check tbrnewsmedia.com for results and the full story on Wednesday’s game.

“We can’t take them lightly, and we’ll be ready,” he said after the win. “They don’t have a lot of depth, but we’re watching them on film and we’ll continue to look for their tendencies. We have some tricks up our sleeve. As a No. 4 seed, a lot of people were looking past us and when we execute on both sides of the ball, we can be a very dangerous team.”

Letters to the editor Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone should resign

Theft from unlocked cars is one of the most frequent incidents in police reports every week on the North Shore.

Summertime and the stealing’s easy For many, summer is the most exciting part of the year, bringing warmer weather and fewer worries. However, as you gear up for a weekend at the beach or a barbecue at a friend’s house, it’s more important than ever to remember the safety precautions you were taught when you were young — lock it up.

The Times Beacon Record Newspapers’ police blotter typically has a fair share of theft incidents that are completely avoidable, with perpetrators stealing wallets and other valuables from unlocked cars and sheds, and sometimes even houses.

Although this may seem like a no-brainer, week after week, month after month, residents continue to lose cash and property left in unlocked places.

Police have said summer months are among their busiest, with spikes in criminal activity and arrests. But it’s not only serious crimes that see a bump — petit crimes become more frequent as opportunity presents itself, which is where we see residents losing out on cash, jewelry and other valuables that may not be properly fortified.

As we head into summer and start planning family trips and getaways, take time to secure against what could potentially impact your summer fun. Lock your front doors, sheds, garages and cars, and close and lock your windows when you’re leaving your house empty for prolonged periods.

Make it that much easier to have a worry-free summer.

County Executive Steve Bellone made a late decision on Thursday, May 12 to move his press conference from his offices at the H. Lee Dennison Building to the steps of the district attorney’s office. After all, it’s best to be a safe distance away from a glass house before throwing stones. At that press conference Bellone demanded the resignation of District Attorney Tom Spota, levying a slew of allegations against his office and bemoaning a “culture of corruption which perverts this government ...,” while painting himself as a victim of the corruption swirling around him.

Bellone’s portrayal is laughable. He is as much a part of this culture of corruption as is Tom Spota. I appeared uninvited at Bellone’s press conference and addressed the media not in an act of political grandstanding, but to ensure the whole truth comes out regarding the corruption that is eating away at our county. For too long elected officials in Suffolk County have been allowed to go unchallenged, hiding behind half-truths, and pointing fingers in a never-ending quest to escape blame. When I believe the people of this county are being deceived, it is my responsibility as a legislator to speak out. It is not about politics, it is about putting an end to the lies.

Those who have followed the media accounts know all too well the saga of disgraced former Police Chief James Burke. As much as Steve Bellone would like to pin Burke’s hiring on Spota, it is he who ultimately bears the responsibility for Burke.

He hired him, he ignored warnings about him, and he continued to stand by him despite evidence of his wrongdoing. However, amidst Burke-Gate, some may have forgotten about Bellone’s IT Commissioner, Donald Rodgers, who was forced to resign in 2014 after being arrested and

I read those words long ago, but didn’t appreciate the stage itself until recently. As a child, I struggled to wade through school books rife with flowing descriptions.

Who cares what kinds of trees are outside the house, if there is a swing set near someone’s first kiss or if a fog sits heavy on a town?

I now appreciate the stage more than ever. In fact, I’d like to go back to Ward Melville High School and thank the stage crew for building sets that turned the stage into the Upper West Side in the 1950s or a yellow brick road.

My appreciation for a setting, however, extends beyond the actual stage. It’s in the seats of an auditorium, where a shared armrest becomes the location for the first tentative effort to hold hands.

The setting continues through the wooden doors that, like eyes focusing from a distance, have opened simultaneously, allowing an appreciative audience its first glimpse of the land that awaits. It’s a part of the marble hallway, where the chatter of birds on nearby trees supplants the chitchat of children, who seem to race out through a revolving glass door that allows the nearby rays of the sun to pour inside.

t has been more than a quarter of a century since I was married, but nonetheless I read, “Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person,” a front-page piece in the Sunday Review section of The New York Times this week, with great interest. Before my husband died, I had been married just shy of 25 years, so I figured I had a dual perspective on the issue.

same token, that was not always the primary criterion for marriage: financial security, international alliances, duty — these are but some of the other motivators. My grandfather, for example, was widowed at a young age when my grandmother died in a wagon accident at the turn of the last century, leaving him with three young children. The family expected him to marry his wife’s younger unmarried sister, which he obediently did, to keep the clan intact and provide loving care for the children, who were after all her nieces and nephew. There are countless instances of royals who were married off to other royals in order to cement strategic alliances — between countries, between tribes, between sects.

Marrying for love is a fairly recent and novel idea that is even today not always practiced around the globe. Marriages can be and still are “arranged.”

But this article last Sunday dealt only with a marriage that is made by mutual choice of the couple involved. So what are the problems the couple will face? Alain de Botton, the author, attempted to list them. “We seem normal only to

That same blade of grass can provide cover for an earthworm as it looks to go back underground after a heavy rainstorm, lest the birds circling overhead stop to bring the worm back to a nest of hungry birds waiting at the top of an awning on a boarded-up house the children believe is haunted.

A setting can become altered the way a police siren appears to change from the Doppler effect.

Even though the alarm wails at the same frequency, its pitch seems different as the sound approaches. The basketball net that appeared to be impossibly high when we were in first grade is remarkably close to our hands as we age, making us feel as if we’ve become Gulliver in our own lives.

Nostalgia can imbue a setting with emotion. I recently drove down my old block. I saw a version of me that was younger than my children

are now. I could see myself staring out the side window of my room across a row of evergreens, letting my eyes become blurry to soften the colors of the red, green, purple, yellow and white Christmas lights down the block. If we were lucky some evenings, the snow would cause the lights to flicker.

Down below those tall evergreens and just outside my front window were several bushes. During the fall, with a full moon and a violent wind, the needles on those bushes transformed into a man with a mohawk hairstyle swaying back and forth.

One morning, those bushes disappeared. I tentatively pulled back the shade, where a dump truck of snow buried my menacing friend. The bushes bent over double, as if the man with the mohawk had taken a hard punch to the gut.

As I squinted at the scene, I knew that I had aged but the man with the mohawk hadn’t.

“Marriage ends up as a hopeful, generous, infinitely kind gamble taken by two people who don’t know yet who they are or who the other might be, binding themselves to a future they cannot conceive of and have carefully avoided investigating,” de Botton asserted. He certainly hit the nail on the head for at least my gen-

eration. We all became engaged as casually as picking a partner with whom to go to the prom. We dated for two months, two years, whatever the case, but always on our best behavior and in settings like concerts and parks that surrounded us with beauty. Perhaps today’s greater intimacy lessens the surprises.

The author makes a key point: That what we seek in marriage is supposedly happiness but in fact is familiarity. We seek to recreate relationships we experienced or yearned for that were out of reach in our childhoods. Those are not the relationships most conducive to happiness.

Also people who feel terribly lonely, who find the thought of being alone throughout their lives terrifying, “risk loving no longer being single rather more than we love the partner who spared us that fate.”

And then there is custom. Everyone married when they finished their schooling, or shortly thereafter, it seemed to us of a certain age.

Indeed, my mother told me on my wedding day that I had barely managed to avoid being “an old maid.” I had just turned 22.
