Three Village School Budget Stays in 1.96 Percent Cap

BY ANDREA PALDY DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM As if times are not challenging enough, districts across the state must create budgets without knowing when, or by how much, state aid will be cut.

Jeff Carlson, deputy superintendent for business services, has removed $1 million from next year’s budget in anticipation of cuts beyond the $300,000 decrease in aid already projected by the state in March.

The current 2020-21 budget falls within the cap on the tax levy increase of 1.96 percent, for a total budget of $218.84 million. This is a 1.75 percent increase over the 2019-20 budget.

The district has begun to make contingency plans with alternate budgets, being referred to as Phase 2, which would mean a further $2 million reduction and Phase 3, which would require a deeper cut of $3 million. Cuomo has said school aid could drop by as much as 20 percent and cuts could take place as late as December, Carlson said.

If cuts go deeper than Phase 3, they will definitely affect services and student programs, Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich said at the district’s May 6 school board

meeting. The board would have to decide whether to make deeper cuts to the budget or use district reserves, she said.

One thing officials do know is that they do not want to make cuts once the school year has begun and would not make cuts to instructional staff.

Pedisich said the district would have to look to reserves, because “any kind of midyear cuts in terms of services would be incredibly disruptive … and this year has been disruptive itself, so we don’t want to add to it and exacerbate the situation.”

The district held a hearing on the budget May 27. Carlson will also give a budget presentation June 1 at 6:45 p.m. at the Three Village Joint Council of PTAs virtual Meet the Candidates night on Zoom. This program will allow residents to hear from the six candidates running for three seats on the school board.

Also, the Three Village Civic Association and Three Village Chamber of Commerce will jointly host an online Meet the Candidates event Thursday, May 28, at 7 p.m. via Zoom conferencing. TBR Seeks Students’ Creative Work for Pens & Pencils

Dear Readers, Every year The Village Times Herald publishes Pens & Pencils, a pull-out section featuring selections of art, prose and poetry provided by the elementary, junior high schools and high school in the Three Village school district.

In the past, we have relied on the English and Art departments of the schools to select and forward those art and writing projects they feel are worthy of inclusion. However, with remote learning due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are asking our readers to submit their children’s creative work.

We will try to include — space permitting, as always — as many representative samples as possible from grades K through 12.

Please understand that we have always received more submissions than would fit in the available space, so we can’t make promises to any students that their work will be included in the supplement. However, we do our best to publish the remaining submissions in the Arts & Lifestyles section of the TBR newspapers throughout the summer.

Obituary

Theresa Olmer of East Setauket

On May 20, Theresa Olmer, wife, mother, daughter and sister, died at home at the age of 65 years.

Theresa, of East Setauket, will be forever remembered by her husband of 44 years and best friend, Ken, and their son Gregory as well as her brother Bob, sister Jeanne and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents Edward and Helen Reilly and her sister Mary Ellen Hassett.

Theresa — Terri to her friends — was born in Queens Aug. 14, 1954. She attended school in Queens and graduated from Nassau Community College with a degree in nursing.

She and Ken were lifelong professional nurses who first met when they were both working at Syosset Hospital on Long Island. She and Ken lived their entire married life on Long Island.

During the last several years of her medical career, Terri was an administrator at a dialysis clinic where she helped manage treatment for hundreds of patients.

Terri always had an adventurous spirit.

She loved to travel and experience new sights and sounds. She especially loved to camp out under the stars, float down rivers on tubes and boat through the nooks and crannies along Long Island Sound. She and Ken traveled throughout the country including Alaska and Hawaii. On their most recent adventure, Terri, Ken and Gregory visited Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

Terri was a superb cook who entertained her family at her home for more than 25 years over Easter weekends highlighted by fabulous Easter dinners. Another memorable event of those weekends was the sunrise service on the beach shepherded by St. James R. C. Church in East Setauket, early each Easter Sunday morning. Those services included a bonfire at West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook and were

led by Montfort Father Francis Pizzarelli.

She and Ken had both retired only a few years ago. During retirement Terri volunteered at a local hospice facility. Both Terri and Ken were active parents in the local Boy Scouts troop in which her son Gregory earned an Eagle Scout award.

A prayer service in her memory was held outdoors because of the coronavirus pandemic May 25 on the grounds of St. James parish. The dignified service was conducted

by Father James Mannion and attended by many of Terri’s family and friends.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Lustgarten Foundation which supports pancreatic cancer research at www.lustgarten.org.

Meet the BOE Candidates

The Three Village Joint Council of PTAs will host an online Meet The Candidates event Monday, June 1.

At 6:45 p.m., Assistant Superintendent Jeffrey Carlson will give an overview of the proposed Three Village 2020-21 School Budget. At 7:00 p.m., the six candidates running for three seats on the board of education will have an opportunity to introduce themselves and their plans for the future of the district, and answer questions submitted by community members.

Stony Brook School’s DriveThrough Graduation a Success

The Stony Brook School hosted a car processional to celebrate the class of 2020 May 23. For the celebration, the school invited seniors and their families to decorate their cars, show school spirit, and parade through campus.

As cars drove up Chapman Parkway, the road that cuts down the middle of the school’s grounds, each student was announced and greeted by members of the school community, including faculty, staff and dorm parents.

Because of space and social distancing

constrictions, only seniors and their immediate families were permitted to attend.

Sterling National Bank, which is situated directly in front of the school, offered their parking lot for cars to line up before the procession to help provide extra space for students waiting for their moment to shine.

The event was also live-streamed for those who were unable to attend. All in attendance were required to respect social distancing guidelines and to remain in their cars at all times.

Stony Brook University Celebrates Virtual Graduation Ceremony

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The usual sea of red caps and gowns were missing from Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at Stony Brook University on graduation day, but the milestone did not go by without a celebration of sorts.

On May 22, the university presented its 2020 Virtual Degree Conferral Celebration in a live stream event that students and families could view. The event included 7,100 graduates, who were awarded a total of 7,190 degrees and certificate completions. The students ranged in age from 18 to 71 and represented 65 countries and 40 states, according to a press release from Stony Brook University.

Michael Bernstein, interim university president, addressed the students during the virtual ceremony.

“You are about to become graduates of one of the most prestigious public universities in the world,” he said. “Graduation is a bittersweet milestone in the best of circumstances, with a pivotal life-chapter ending and an uncertain journey beginning. The strong emotions that inevitably come with this rite of passage are of

course uniquely amplified in the midst of the historic upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Julianna Casella, who graduated with a bachelor of science in biology and psychology with a minor in writing and rhetoric, was selected as the Class of 2020 student speaker and was able to address the students during the live stream event.

“I am confident that any other class of Seawolves would have responded the same way [to the pandemic] because that is what we do here at Stony Brook,” Casella said. “Even though much has been lost during this crisis, at the end of the day, two feelings prevail — hope and gratitude. I will always be thankful for the memories and opportunities Stony Brook has given me and if our response to this pandemic has been proof enough, I think we should all be hopeful for what the future holds.”

The decision to hold a virtual ceremony was made in April with Bernstein calling the decision a difficult one that was made “in a deliberate and careful way.” Input from medical experts and the current guidelines from Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and the New York State governor’s office were taken into consideration. During the April announcement, Bernstein added that the decision was made to

ensure “the well-being of our community and loved ones.”

Back in April, student Muhammad Fithra Yoga started a petition on www.change.org

asking SBU to not cancel but postpone the spring commencement ceremony to the summer after the pandemic has passed. More than 1,600 signed the online petition.

Brookhaven Task Force Aims to Prepare Businesses for Reopening

As Long Island continues to take steps toward reopening and some sense of normalcy, municipalities are aiming to help small businesses and their financial futures.

The Town of Brookhaven has created a postCOVID-19 task force for economic recovery in an effort to revitalize the downtown areas and help small businesses affected by the pandemic, many of which are receiving no income at all during this time.

The Small Business Recovery Task Force is made up of business owners, chamber of commerce representatives, business experts and other officials.

Barbara Ransome, Director of Operations at the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, said the task force gives them the opportunity to come together and be on the same page on how to help these small businesses.

“We all have similar concerns, and it’s important that we rally together and have a unified plan,” she said.

The task force has continued to comply with feedback from local business owners. A complaint they have brought up is the state’s

process of phasing in business reopenings.

Ransome said the state’s plan favors big box stores. While large retailers like Target and Walmart have been able to stay open, smaller merchants, who sell many of the same products, have been forced to close. “Those businesses don’t have that ability right now [to reopen],” she said.

Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and the Suffolk County Supervisors’ Association has sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) calling on him to come up with a consistent way of judging businesses.

“They could come up with a formula that could be based on square footage of a business and safety measures,” said Ransome.

The group has also called on elected officials to help with insurance coverage issues. Educating business owners, merchants and customers on social distancing and other best practices is another area the task force is focusing on.

“It’s all our responsibility to make sure we are on the same page,” said Charlie Lefkowitz, president of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce.

One idea they’ve proposed is creating a public service announcement in coordination with the town. Lefkowitz said it would inform the public on safety measures, social distancing

compliance and other information. They would also use it as an opportunity to send out a positive message of unity.

“The hardest thing we will have to figure out is how we are going to social distance,” he said.

“We are trying to help these main street and small businesses.”

In addition, the task force is looking at ways to ease the reopening process for owners. Capacity and the number of customers a business can serve could play a huge role in how they do so, given the state’s COVID-19 guidelines.

Lefkowitz said he has been working with town officials on a way to allow business owners to temporarily extend their store space either by permits, tweaking town code or drafting new legislation. “Some businesses might be able to use walkways and put merchandise outside, or they could set up a tent outside in the parking lot,” he said.

The chamber of commerce president has a draft legislation proposal that would increase the floor area ratio of a business, which would help in creating more selling space.

Lefkowitz said restaurants are just one type of business that could benefit from increase in space. “They can be more efficient with indoor and outdoor space,” he said. “Whatever the

capacity is, you may have customers that might not feel comfortable going inside.”

This week Long Island reached Phase 1 of Cuomo’s New York Forward plan for reopening its economy, meeting all seven benchmarks required by the state. The governor’s plan to reopen consists of four phases which include different categories. Restaurants are in Phase 3.

Michael Ardolino, a past president of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce, said businesses will be facing different challenges when they reopen.

“How will places like beauty salons and barbershops fare when everyone is in close proximity to each other?” he said. “These owners will want to be able to get their business going.”

Ardolino said he could envision a scenario where those types of businesses take a certain number of customers by appointment only. “We will continue to monitor all businesses and may have to plan for what might be a new business climate,” he said.

Owners hope more businesses reopen sooner rather than later, with summer close by. Ransome said it will be challenging as the weather gets warmer “to keep people at bay.”

“We don’t want to be going backward instead of going forward,” she said.

LI State Vets Home Expands Help to Veterans at Home

Kindness, devotion, hard work, and determination; these are the words to describe the loyalty that the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University has toward its patients. While the COVID-19 pandemic has made their mission immensely difficult, this facility is carrying out its responsibilities to support our local veterans at this nursing home.

This staff has adapted to the hardships of this virus, and they are finding different ways of helping many elderly veterans who have served in practically every military branch.

The vets home has created a multi-faceted program that helps people from Riverhead to Massapequa. Leading the way is Jean Brand, the Program Director of the Adult Day Health Care Program, with their efforts based in Stony Brook and in the homes of these older populations who rely on the services.

Even before the coronavirus changed operations, staff members have provided assistance in cooking, bathing and nutritional aid that allows for breakfast and lunch to be served along with taking home a meals for dinner. They also provided rehabilitation for physical and speech therapy programs. As the veterans ages range from the mid 60s to over

100 years old. The staff’s devotion also allows the older counterparts to take a brief break in handling the rigors of treating their loved ones.

From the start of the day, the state nursing home provides transportation to bring citizens that served from World War II, Korean and Vietnam to Stony Brook. Due to this current pandemic, the programs are now more home based. Although these were necessary changes, according to Brand, the organization is finding new ways to help these older citizens.

Through a home delivery program, several meals a week are organized and distributed to the elderly. Brand and her staff are currently preparing food that is non-perishable and easy to eat. Deliveries also include necessary items that have been difficult to purchase such as toilet paper, masks, wipes, paper towels and soap.

They have also sent home word puzzles and other games to help keep their minds sharp and to pass the time, as many of these veterans that are spending numerous hours in their houses.

With many longterm relationships built up at Stony Brook, the staff misses these familiar faces and their stories of service of defending our nation during many trying times. Many of these men and women are considered family members to the staff. The entire staff, through expertise and professionalism, has for many years attended to the many diverse needs of these men and women.

They have implemented telehealth to boost morale and at the same time to safely utilize social distancing initiatives to keep a watchful eye on the health of their patients. Although sending home food is a primary function of this program, many of these telephone calls are keeping the lines of communication open, and range from a simple hello to necessary inquiries about serious ailments.

Brand spoke about a unique program that was created to connect the patriotic stories of national service to the students of today. The Long Island Museum has worked with the vets home through a pen pal project which has younger men and women reach out to veterans to learn about their lives.

Even as this has been tough period, this idea has developed relationships between different generations. Young people have seen and heard the examples of service by our senior population.

This writing programs has also allowed younger students to identify the various issues that impacted the mobility and health concerns that have widely plagued older populations.

Not since the days of the 1918 Spanish Flu has our nation had to handle a health crisis of this magnitude. The numbers of the people that have been impacted are still staggering, but the efforts of places like the Long Island State Veterans Home continue to adapt and

overcome many of these medical challenges that still pose a major concern to this country.

This homecare program has completely shown the determination of longtime staff members like that of Brand and her fellow workers to help their patients before, during and after this sickness is finally subdued.

Village Annual Parade in Setauket Canceled, but Memorial Day Carries On Somber day marked with wreath-laying event

BY HEIDI SUTTON In Setauket, Memorial Day is usually marked with a parade from Main Street to Route 25A followed by a remembrance ceremony, but these are not usual times.

For the first time in recent years the parade was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, Veterans Foreign War Post 3054, which hosts the Three Village Memorial Day Parade each year, decided to hold a brief wreath-laying ceremony at Setauket Veterans Memorial Park to memorialize those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

The park’s monument honors members of the community who perished in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. “As long as two comrades survive — so long will the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States render tribute to our heroic dead,” said Post Commander Jay Veronko, who led the 10-minute remembrance event.

As in years past there was the traditional rifle

salute, a prayer, the playing of taps and rousing renditions of our country’s national anthem and “God Bless America” by Arleen Gargiulo of Setauket, albeit with face masks while adhering to strict social distancing measures.

“Our presence here is in solemn commemoration of all these men — an expression of our tribute to their devotion to duty, to their courage and patriotism. By their services on land, on sea and in the air, they have made us their debtors, for the flag of our nation still flies over a land of free people,” Veronko said.

The Post also paid their respects to their departed comrades Edward Arndt and Walter Denzler Sr. and “a solemn tribute to all comrades wherever they may rest.” The group also laid wreaths at the Setauket Village Green Memorial and the Stony Brook Village Memorial.

Veronko thanked the participants for coming. “Hopefully next year we can have a parade,” he said.

Setauket Photographer Captures Stay at Home Moments

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM When the pandemic first required people to stay at home, one local photographer decided to practice her craft from a distance while helping others.

Ashleigh Malangone, of Ashleigh’s Studio, and daughter-in-law of Meg Malangone, TBR News Media’s receptionist, said she was collecting masks, donating food and supporting local businesses as much as she could but she still felt helpless.

“Perhaps I will never feel like I’ve done enough given what our heroes sacrifice each and every day on the front lines, but I was committed to doing the best that I could,” the Setauket resident said.

Her feeling of helplessness inspired her to create a PORCHrait Project. She started spreading the word on social media that she would come to people’s properties and take photos of them and their families. She then donated the fee, which families paid for through Venmo, to the Three Village Central School District’s food pantry.

Malangone dedicated a week to the project and photographed more than 75 local families.

In that one week, she raised $2,600 which she used to purchase $25 Stop & Shop gift cards to give to the pantry.

“It was such a beautiful experience and

such a wonderful success,” she said. “I met so many lovely families, and it was a win-win for all. I got to continue to do what I love, the families I worked with had a fun excuse to get dressed and now have a tangible memory of their time at home during quarantine.”

The photographer said in addition to subjects paying via Venmo and maintaining a 6-foot distance, she would spend just 10 minutes at each property and then email three or four edited images within 24 hours to the families.

Malangone said the most important part of the project was raising money for a good cause, and she found everyone’s response heartwarming.

“My slogan was: Team Work, Dream Work!” the photographer said.

Malangone said after her weeklong dedication to the fundraiser, she still receives inquiries for PORCHraits. She said she has added the photo session as a permanent option for her clients, and about once or twice a week, she still heads out for quick, social distancing photo shoots for residents who want a keepsake of this period of time.

“I’m loving it and feel really grateful for the smiles this project has brought to me and so many others,” she said.

Letters to the Editor

There were once things called cassettes. Those were discarded in favor of CDs, but now there’s nothing of music but bits of stored data on a computer. Actually, maybe not. Maybe your music is stored in a cloud, a server bank thousands of miles away from where you even live.

But still, people are buying vinyl records again. There’s a certain quality to them you won’t get with digitized music, people say. Not only that, it simply feels different, like one is feeling the rough memories of the music artist.

It goes to say that there is a certain quality to things gone past that goes beyond nostalgia. In today’s crisis, it may be best to look for the things we once thought defunct to perhaps help us and our local businesses combat the economic impacts of COVID-19 in unique ways. While Suffolk County begins the reopening process this week, businesses must think about the greater good, and look for unique ways to service customers without potentially causing an uptick in cases.

We’re not the only folks to recognize the possibilities presented by drive-in movies. We have heard leaders in multiple North Shore communities mention the possibility of setting up some kind of incar theater experience. What it takes is space, and that’s the main issue. Places like Stony Brook University may be tricky because of all the coronavirus-related activity going on there. Landlords with strip malls or other large parking lots should start considering the possibility to help out their tenants. Imagine people being able to order food that then gets delivered to cars while they’re watching a movie right there in the parking lot.

There’s one noticeable location right on the North Shore that is almost too perfect a spot. The former Rocky Point Drive-In on Route 25A may be too apt a name for what’s now an overgrown property. It’s owned by Heidenberg Properties Group, a national company that wanted to put a big box store there before local communities and governments came out against it. Maybe it’s time for the property owner to think of something else for that location, and we feel the community would embrace the return of a local landmark.

Summer on Long Island might be drier than any in living memory. Beaches might very well be restricted. Parks and sports fields and courts may be similarly closed. The annual summer concert series, hosted by Suffolk County legislators along with civic leaders in various locations across the North Shore, may very well not happen this year.

It’s going to take ingenuity to fill the summer with something other than backyard escapades and hours spent couch surfing.

Some places, such as Port Jefferson Village and the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, are opening up some space for farmers markets, though the one at the mall has found unique success by having people stay in their cars and roll up to each individual stall along a line.

We encourage more of our shopping centers to embrace outdoor dining experiences. Even as Long Island inches closer to starting the reopening process, many will find people may still be anxious of eating inside enclosed dining areas.

But with that there has to be restriction and conscientiousness.

On Memorial Day, downtown Port Jefferson was packed with a slew of people, many not wearing face coverings or practicing much social distancing.

While we begin the reopening process this week, we should remember the worst-case scenario is a second wave of the virus that could force businesses to shut down all over again. Our local business owners are smart, and we’re sure they will think of unique ways to facilitate customers while keeping the virus from spreading once again.

This year there are a total of six candidates running for the Three Village board of education, and residents of the Three Village Central School District have a rare opportunity to make a substantial change in the direction of our school district. This is our chance to bring fresh, independent minds and new ideas into the district.

Among all the candidates, there are two we know who really stand out: Shaorui Li and David McKinnon. We first knew them as parents of our children’s friends, and later became friends ourselves.

Li has a doctoral degree in electrical engineering, worked in the private sector and a national lab, and is now an entrepreneur. Her achievement is not only in the technical fields but also in leadership, with proven skills in managing

What’s Old Is New Again Vote for Shaorui Li and David McKinnon to 3V BOE budgets, operations and personnel. She recognizes that students’ success comes in many shapes and forms and emphasizes the importance of creating an environment that enables each student to maximize his or her potential.

We believe that as a board member, she will bring unique insights into effective teaching/learning programs.

David McKinnon, also a Ph.D., is a 30-year Three Village resident and Stony Brook University professor. He is passionate about a number of academic initiatives, especially elementary math reform. There are many teachers and parents in the district who are unhappy with the common core curriculum. What he will bring to the table is a positive pursuit of improvement instead of passive dissent. He will be a great board member.

Both Li and McKinnon believe that our school district is strong, but there are opportunities to improve academic opportunities and achievements for learners across the entire spectrum. They are also strong believers in the public education system. The current pandemic turned all our lives into anything but normal. Yet, more than ever in this uncertain time, we need passionate new leaders who are both thinkers and doers to bring our school district to the next level. This year’s election may very well shape our school district’s next decade. It is that important.

We would like to remind everyone to vote.

Vote for change. Vote for Shaorui Li and David McKinnon.

Li’s, McKinnon’s Jobs Leave Them Well Positioned I am writing in support of candidates Shaorui Li and David McKinnon for the school board of the Three Village Central School District. A thorough reading of each candidate’s website is both heartening and inspiring, offering hope and confidence for an educational landscape which is changing in the wake of the distance learning and budget constraints resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak.

Li and McKinnon’s day jobs leave them well positioned to understand how to prepare Three Village students for future work lives which are not only financially viable, but personally meaningful and fulfilling. Both are faculty at Stony Brook University, which lets them see with eyes wide open what skills are needed for a kid to make it in college.

McKinnon, for example, relates how he has seen undergraduates struggle with the math skills required for science courses. One

major running point for him is improving the elementary math curriculum. McKinnon speaks of the importance of not losing the kids “in the middle,” the ones who possess ability but lose interest due to the frustration of a curriculum like the current Go Math! program. Li emphasizes that test scores cannot serve as the ultimate measure of achievement because they cannot measure skill and aptitude in all areas. What about the student with a knack for woodworking, a future chef or someone who will work in the trades? McKinnon, too, speaks not only of the college-bound student, but of the “tinkerers and makers” among our kids.

Both Li and McKinnon possess analytical and problem-solving skills as a result of their professional training in engineering and scientific research. Both are experienced in managing budgets and working within them. With regard to distance learning,

Li speaks of helping teachers receive the support they need to continually advance their online teaching techniques. McKinnon brings great experience to this issue, having authored an online text and conducted video classes himself.

The enthusiasm and dedication of Shaorui Li and David McKinnon are clear.

Their thoughtful, well organized websites are a strong predictor of the caliber of service which they will bring to the school board. The spirit of both candidates is well summarized by this quote from Li: “The measure of success is not just test scores, but the happiness of pursuing what one’s talented on and passionate about, the excitement of achieving what one cherishes and is proud of.”

Hopefully this letter will convey a sincere thanks for this wonderful reminder that in this time of social separation we are not alone and there are still people who care more for the community good than personal inconvenience through lawn

signs thanking health care workers, increase of donations to food banks, takeout support from local restaurants and wearing masks to protect others from infection.

New Terms For the New Realities of 2020

ur world is filled with all kinds of new terms, like social distancing, face coverings and viral peaks. We could use a few new terms to describe the modern reality, which might give us greater control over the unsettling world around us.

How about: Zoom Staging: The process of setting up our best artwork and most intelligent books behind us. We might have read “War and Peace” or “Crime and Punishment” or “An American D. None Tragedy” in college. of the above It’s time to find those

incomprehensible artwork from our children that none of our coworkers would dare criticize.

Curbworld: Even though we’re opening up parts of the economy starting this week, we still can only do some retail shopping through curbside pickup. We have become a world that exists at the curb, where retail space goes untouched and where curbs have become the intersection of our outings and the stuff we bring home.

Googleversity: To some extent, we were living in this world before the virus, but search platforms have become a critical part of our children’s home learning environment.

In addition to listening to a professor with a headset or air pods on, our children are also frantically searching the web in real time to answer questions about the War of 1812 or about theorems that sound vaguely familiar.

Coviracy Theories: The world was filled with conspiracy theories before President Donald Trump (R) came along and will have plenty of conspiracy theories after he leaves. Still, the preponderance

erhaps the worst is over. With this first phase of recovery for Long Island, suddenly there is hope that the strange pandemic life we are leading will pass into history. Of course, we are far from home free.

The virus is still just as contagious and the threat is still real. We continue to ache for those whose lives have been cut short by this virulent disease, and our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones without even a farewell or Between proper service.

But we have, you and me to a great extent,

our interactions with family, friends and colleagues to regular Zoom sessions.

Working remotely, for those who can, has proven not to be so bad and will probably carry over well beyond sheltering-in-place. And for those on the front lines of response, the intensity, if not the fear, may have somewhat diminished.

We are thrilled to see the stores open up, if only for curbside or doorway pick up of items.

Some of the establishments have constructed barriers to keep customers safely apart or added ultraviolet lighting to kill the microbes.

And perhaps those on unemployment can now be called back to work.

Some may not return even though they are required to respond to their employer’s call. Ironically, they may be doing better financially by being on unemployment, at least for the short term. The federal government has put itself in competition with small businesses, who can’t pay workers as much, and sometimes the Feds win. Those small businesses that have received the Payroll Protection Plan money are able to call back workers and to pay them until their eightweek period runs out.

of conspiracy theories related to the virus should have its own lexicon, as people have blamed everyone from foreign governments to incredibly rich and successful technology geniuses for the virus.

Insertcollege.edu: Up until now, people have graduated from colleges where they had unique, on site experiences. This year, that’s not the case, as distance learning seems to have become something of a commodity, with professors of all talent levels struggling to engage a group of people remotely. None of the books we have that are supposed to help with the college hunt — and we have plenty of them now with a high school junior and a college freshman in our midst — help us differentiate among the online platforms of the institutions of higher learning. It’s unclear how, if at all, any of these institutions stands out.

SWSD: Second Wave Stress Disorder.

Over the last several weeks, we have heard plenty about a coming second wave. In fact, some colleges that are reopening their doors this fall, such as North Carolina State

University, plan to start their semester early, go through fall break and then send students home for an extended break that they hope allows them to avoid a second wave at school.

91 Divoc Dreams: Given the dream world, it seems fitting that we reverse the order of COVID-19 to suggest the upside down world that haunts our dreams, which is a mixture of the realities of our daily fears, anxieties and discomforts blended with the imaginative world of science fiction drama that we beam into our bedrooms that distract and unnerve us.

Masksession: Some of us have become obsessed with the right not to wear a mask, even as others feel an urgency to ensure everyone wears masks. The mask discussion has become an obsession.

2020 No More: To finish the vernacular, we should no longer consider perfect vision to be 20-20 because, after all, 2020 sucks.

We could change it to 21-21 or anything else, where we don’t need to link the perfect vision of hindsight to this imperfect year.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who has built up quite a following for his daily briefings and won positive ratings for his down home manner, offered this as he rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange Tuesday: “Wearing a mask has got to be something you do every day. When you get up, when you walk out of the house, you put the mask on.

This is cool.”

He also admonished people not to be rude to those who might not be wearing masks, that we should encourage them to do so nicely and politely. He did go on to add, recognizing that he was, after all, governor of New York State, “But it’s New York. We have to be careful that nice and polite stays nice and polite.”

Cuomo met with President Donald Trump (R), a longtime fellow New Yorker, Wednesday, and urged spending for infrastructure as a way to provide many jobs.

That goal was mentioned by Trump shortly after he took office in 2017 and is considered one of the few subjects on which there could be bipartisan support. In particular, Cuomo advocated for an AirTrain to La Guardia Airport, a rail tunnel under the Hudson

River and a northern extension of the Second Avenue subway.

It is most unfortunate that, along with the deadly consequences of the novel coronavirus, there is an underpinning of highly partisan sentiment in the country. Traditionally, when there is a crisis, Americans pull together.

Certainly that was true during Pearl Harbor, 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, for example. But the nature of this pandemic is asymmetrical in that areas of greater density tend to be more stricken, while those more rural or away from the big cities and the coasts are more lightly touched.

It is hard for those not in the throes of the ghastly metrics of death and affliction to feel the extreme stress of those who are. It just so happens that the divide between red and blue states overlays our map, not perfectly, but remarkably. Suffolk County, considered a red county, yet in a dense area, is an exception with its high casualties.

So we have those demanding an “opening” of the economy vs. those who are concerned about contagion. We must unfailingly continue to practice what has worked to win us entry thus far into Phase One.
