East Setauket student wins state Senate contest

A student in East Setauket is improving the environment one bottle at a time.

State Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) presented sixth-grader Sam Specht with a certificate for winning the New York State Senate’s 2018 Earth Day Poster Contest during a May 21 assembly at The Laurel Hill School for his entry, “We Are Creating a Monsterous Problem!”

Sam took the challenge one step further

to go from New York to San Francisco and back,” he said.

The 12-year-old had advice on how to help with reducing the number of bottles found in trash cans and littering communities. One, Sam said, is to purchase reusable drinking containers, and to also look for recycling receptacles when in public. Sam said it’s vital to research locations to ensure plastic is recycled properly when returning bottles from home, which he found most supermarkets do.

Sam was unable to bring his bottle monster to the assembly because — Sam Specht he had already taken the pieces, which included soda and water bottles for the body and a milk jug for the head, to Costco to recycle. He said he was happy his teacher and mom took pictures to display at the school presentation.

“I was pretty surprised when I won because I knew a lot of people participated so I didn’t really expect that,” he said.

Sam’s mother, Joanne, said her son has been concerned about the environment for years.

“He is always reminding us to turn off the water when we brush our teeth,” she said. “He is also always asking everyone in our family to use refillable bottles instead of buying water bottles.”

Flanagan said Sam, 12, was chosen from 4,600 entries, representing 43 of 63 state senators.

“You, my friend, have distinguished yourself as the best of 4,600,” Flanagan said.

The senator had advice for the students in attendance. He said young people may garner more respect when it comes to advising others in disposing of litter and recycling since people don’t always listen to adults who tell someone to pick up or recycle a piece of garbage.

“I guarantee if one of you said it, they’d pay a lot more attention,” he said. “So, don’t think you can’t make a difference, because you can.”

Sam, who lives in Bellport, has attended The Laurel Hill School since pre-K. He chose the plastic bottles as the issue for his poster because he said not enough people recycle them properly. During his research for the essay that accompanied the poster, Sam said he discovered a million bottles are purchased worldwide every minute and 91 percent aren’t recycled. These are facts he included on his poster.

The mother said Sam helps his neighbors bring their recycling cans to the curb on collection days, which she said has made him more aware of how much plastic is used and discarded.

“I am glad for Sam that he won because he takes this issue very seriously,” she said.

Melville park trustees celebrate Red Barn restoration The weather was finally ideal for Frank Melville Memorial Park trustees, volunteers and friends to celebrate the completion of much-needed repairs to a historic structure.

Workers began restoring the park’s Red Barn at the beginning of September and completed the project a few months later.

The 1,056 square-foot barn needed structural restoration, which included straightening, and the building up of the existing foundation to a level where it will be protected from flooding.

On May 20 guests of the trustees enjoyed a reception complete with wine, hors

d’oeuvres, dinner and desserts from Farm to Table Catering, as well as music from a few of The Jazz Loft performers.

Robert Reuter, president of the Frank Melville Memorial Foundation, thanked those who played a part in restoring the barn including Kathryn Curran, executive director of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, who helped to secure a $44,330 matching grant for the park.

“Kathryn Curran and the trustees of the foundation saw the real community value in what we’re doing here,” Reuter said. “I think they understood when they saw the application that this really is one of the centers of our community. It’s part of a large area that is rich in history, and it’s often interpreted as that by the historical society and some of the others who celebrate that history.”

He said in addition to the foundation’s endowment, the community’s support also played a big part in the restoration.

Trustee Greg Ferguson’s family foundation and another trustee who wished to remain anonymous created a $10,000 matching challenge. Reuter said the trustees’ friends exceeded the goal and came close to matching the Gardiner grant. He said the balance needed for the barn came from park funds that were budgeted for park repairs.

Curran said the Gardiner Foundation seeks out projects through community outreach that advance regional history.

“As a restoration carpenter Scott’s empathy to our historic sites is rooted in respect for their traditional construction,” Curran said. “His work helps bring these buildings back to life for their newly designated purposes.”

Incidents and arrests May 15–20 Weed arrest

A 54-year-old man from Sound Beach was driving a 2002 Ford near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Eaton Drive in Port Jefferson Station May 18 when, during a traffic stop, police discovered he allegedly had more than 25 grams of marijuana in the vehicle, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

Obstructing a ticket writer

While on Main Street in Port Jefferson May 20 at about midnight, a 21-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station allegedly shoved a village code enforcement officer who was writing a ticket for another person in an effort to help the person avoid the ticket, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree obstruction of governmental administration.

Driving with suspended license

At about 1:30 a.m. May 16, a 27-year-old man from Patchogue was driving a 2018 Jeep on Nicolls Road in Centereach when during a traffic stop, police discovered he was allegedly driving with a suspended license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Scheme to defraud

Between December 2017 and January 2018, a 40-year-old undomiciled man allegedly engaged in a systemic, ongoing effort to rent apartments that did not belong to him in Terryville to three different women, according to police. He was arrested May 18 in Selden and charged with three counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and first-degree scheme to defraud.

Illegal possession of shotgun

A 51-year-old man from St. James allegedly possessed and sold a 12-gauge shotgun while at Suffolk Sportsman on East Main Street in Smithtown May 16 despite having been previously convicted of a felony, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fourthdegree criminal possession of a weapon.

Counterfeit $50s

On Nov. 28, 2017, a 44-year-old man from Mastic allegedly knowingly sold counterfeit $50 bills while on Horseblock Road in Medford, according to police. He was arrested May 16 in Selden and charged with two counts of first-degree forgery.

Disturbing a service

At St. Anthony’s Church on Route 25A in Rocky Point May 16 at about 5 p.m., a 36-year-old man allegedly entered and disrupted a service being conducted by yelling, using foul language and making threats to patrons attending while standing on the alter, according to police. He also had marijuana in his possession, police said.

He was arrested and charged with disrupting a religious service, third-degree criminal trespassing and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Broken window

The window of a 2000 Jeep parked outside of a home on Seville Lane in Stony Brook May 19 at about 11:30 p.m., according to police.

Vehicle damaged

The hood of a 2011 Ford parked on Stony Road in Stony Brook was damaged at about 6:30 p.m. May 20, according to police.

Shoplifting

Clothing and cosmetics were stolen from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in Setauket May 18 at about 12:30 p.m., according to police.

Missing purse

A customer at McDonald’s on Route 25A in Miller Place left a purse on the table when she went to use the bathroom at about 1:15 p.m. May 17, and returned to see it was missing, according to police.

Electronics stolen

Electronics were stolen from Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket May 16 at about 10:30 a.m., according to police.

Car break-ins

At about 2:15 a.m. May 15, cash, a debit card and a driver’s license were stolen from within a 2006 Nissan parked outside Tara Inn bar and restaurant on Main Street in Port Jefferson, according to police. Credit cards and cash were stolen from an unlocked car parked on Greenhaven Drive in Terryville May 19 at about noon, according to police.

Nicorette nabbed

Eleven boxes of Nicorette gum were stolen from CVS on Route 112 in Terryville May 20 at about 7:30 p.m., according to police.

With graduation approaching comes a new outreach program to keep kids safe.

Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini (D) announced an initiative aimed at educating high school students and their parents on the dangers of impaired and reckless driving May 14. The program, Choices & Consequences, is described as a dynamic, engaging presentation that is provided by assistant district attorneys and detectives assigned to the county District Attorney’s Office’s Vehicular Crime Bureau.

“Whether it’s texting and driving, drinking or doing drugs and driving, these decisions can be fatal,” Sini said. “The Choices & Consequences program drives that message home to teens and their parents by using real-life examples that unfortunately have changed lives forever, have taken lives from us prematurely, and have devastated victims’ families and friends here in Suffolk County.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the leading cause of death for people in the United States between 15 and 24 years old is motor vehicle crashes. In Suffolk County, the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes are impaired driving and reckless or distracted driving.

During Sini’s tenure as the county’s police commissioner, motor vehicle crashes within the police district were reduced by more than 30 percent as a result of a multipronged enforcement effort to increase traffic safety.

“I’m proud to say that the Suffolk County Police Department and its partners have been successful reducing motor vehicle crashes that result in serious physical injuries or fatalities, but enforcement is just one piece of our approach,” Sini said. “We need to educate — we need to raise awareness of making bad decisions behind the wheel.”

The Choices & Consequences program is based on a presentation created in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn and later adopted by the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. It comprises facts and statistics on impaired and reckless driving; interactive skits that show how police officers respond to motor vehicle crash scenes and detect impairment; and demonstrations of the impacts of alcohol and drugs on motor skills.

In partnership with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence, the scope of the effort has been expanded to educate participants about the dangers of substance use in an effort to combat the opioid epidemic.

LICADD, in conjunction with The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, a family charitable foundation concentrated on alcohol-use disorder and addiction, and on educating the public that addiction is a medical illness, recently released a public service announcement, titled “Hey Charlie,” that highlights the progression of drug addiction and encourages those struggling with substance abuse to seek treatment.

“LICADD is proud to partner with the District Attorney’s Office as it takes the lead in making sure that this lifesaving education is provided to every student and every parent in Suffolk County,” said Steve Chassman, executive director of LICADD. “It’s so important when dealing with a disease that is potentially preventable to get this message out in every Long Island school. This is how we are going to turn the corner on this epidemic.”

After his experience, he had the high school staff trained in its use. Now, all elementary and secondary school staff members in the district have also been trained.

When it came to the debate over genderneutral graduation gowns in the winter of 2017, while many students and parents were against the district abandoning the tradition of males wearing green gowns and females wearing yellow ones, and switching to green gowns for all students, Baum showed support for the school district’s decision.

“In addition to creating a unified senior class, it is our hope that creating a unifying color scheme will eliminate the anxiety that is caused by forcing a young adult to wear a gown that labels them differently from how they identify,” he wrote in a March 2, 2017, letter to Three Village parents.

When it comes to navigating the issues and concerns that a high school principal may encounter, Baum had advice for Bernhard.

“Ward Melville is a great institution filled with incredible students and amazing staff,” he said. “Be sure to include them in your decision-making process and never lose sight of your objective: to help provide a well-rounded, enriched educational experience for all students. Stay open-minded, be fair and, above all, enjoy this professional opportunity to grow.”

Remembering lost soldiers in the Three Villages In a proclamation made May 24, 2017, President Donald Trump (R) shared his sentiments about Memorial Day. “Memorial Day is our Nation’s solemn reminder that freedom is never free,” the proclamation reads. “It is a moment of collective reflection on the noble sacrifices of those who gave the last measure of devotion in service of our ideals and in the defense of our Nation. On this ceremonious day, we remember the fallen, we pray for a lasting peace among nations, and we honor these guardians of our inalienable rights.”

This year Memorial Day is celebrated Monday, May 28, a day to honor the men and women who served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice. On the Setauket Village Green is a boulder with plaques honoring two Setauket men who did not return from World War I. The boulder was placed there in 1919 to honor them. On Sept. 1, 1919, a celebration, parade and memorial services were conducted at the new East Setauket memorial and then, at the conclusion of the parade, on the Setauket Village Green.

The two who did not return were memorialized at the ceremony on the Village Green at the end of the parade as reported by the Port Jefferson Times. “With the service men in uniform standing stiffly at attention and the civilians with bared heads, the entire

The massive boulder erected on the Setauket Village Green was brought from Strong’s Neck and the plaque was designed

by the well-known artist William de Leftwich Dodge who painted the murals on New York history that are in the state capitol in Albany.

Private Raymond Wishart, son of postmaster and Mrs. Andrew Wishart, was born Sept. 10, 1893, and he died in France Aug. 23, 1918. His remains were returned to this country and were buried in the Caroline Church of Brookhaven graveyard on a

Sunday in July 1921.

Harry Golden is remembered by his nephew Sam Golden. “He was a sergeant in charge of the mules,” Sam recalled. “His unit was attacked, and he was killed. He was 28 years old when he died, and he’s buried there in France.”

On the opposite side of the rock is a plaque that was placed there after World War II. It reads, “1941–1945 — In memory of Clifford J. Darling, Henry P. Eichacker, Francis S. Hawkins, David Douglas Hunter, Orlando B. Lyons, Anthony R. Matusky, Edward A. Pfeiffer [and] William E. Weston of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in World War II.” A new plaque was later added to honor Chris Brunn who died in Vietnam in 1969.

This year the Memorial Day ceremony will take place on the Setauket Village Green at 10:30 a.m. with the amassed flags of the Three Village veterans and community organizations as well as village and town officials and dignitaries. This will be followed by the parade from the Setauket Village Green to the East Setauket Veterans Memorial on Route 25A and Shore Road, followed by the Memorial Day ceremony in East Setauket.

OBITUARIES Robert Francis Barrett died April 7.

Robert was born in Flushing Dec. 10, 1940, the son of John Sherman Barrett and Dorothy West Barrett Lehman.

He grew up in Stony Brook and graduated from Port Jefferson High School before joining the Navy in 1958, which afforded him the opportunity to see the world, including year-long deployments to the Mediterranean and South America before his honorable discharge in 1964.

Robert’s lifelong commitment to community service began in the Boy Scouts and continued after his Navy service as a

volunteer fireman in the Stony Brook Fire Department.

After moving his family to Washington state in 1978, he served as chief of the Milan Fire Department in Milan, Washington, and worked more than 25 years as a biomedical technician at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. During the past six years, he continued his community service in Cape Canaveral, Florida, as a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Barrett is survived by his three children Susan A. Barrett, John S. Barrett and Eileen M. Appleby; two grandchildren Scott K. Dale and Sydney K. Dale; sister Donna E. (Barrett) Hutton; and an extended family of cousins, nephews and nieces.

Services were held at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton May 22. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Barrett’s selected charities, St. Jude’s

Children’s Hospital, St. Vincent de Paul Society or the Wounded Warrior Project.

Lita Gottfried

Lita Gottfried died March 6 in her home in New York City among family and friends after a lengthy illness.

Lita was a 40-year resident of Stony Brook, with a long career in the Children’s Room and tech services of the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library.

Lita is survived by her husband Stuart, her sons Russell, Matthew and Peter and their families. Her beautiful smile and warmth are everlasting.

On May 17, the day before Stony Brook University held its general graduation, 126 new doctors graduated from the SBU School of Medicine at the 44th Convocation, which is the traditional hooding ceremony.

Nearly half the graduates experienced a once-in-a-lifetime moment when a parent or other family member with a doctoral degree took the honor of hooding their loved one.

The doctors begin their residency training in July.

Approximately half will practice at hospitals and academic medical centers in New York State and the other half at facilities nationwide.

“This is a day of celebration amidst your years of hard work, dedication and commitment to the field you are entering,” said Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, senior vice president for the Health Sciences and dean of the School of Medicine, as he addressed the graduates. “Medicine is a rapidly changing and dynamic landscape and is truly a field in which you will transform the lives of your patients and embrace lifelong learning.”

The convocation speaker, Dr. Wilson M. Compton, deputy director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health, urged the graduates that by following their passions in medicine new opportunities will open up that will lead them to taking part in new discoveries, new treatments and disease prevention.

He specifically addressed the opioid crisis happening in the United States right now, a crisis the new doctors can help stop in their roles as physicians and in their chosen specialties to help prevent future health crises.

Among the graduates was Dr. Nimali Weerasooriya, who studied at SBU for eight years. Weerasooriya attended R.C. Murphy Junior High School and graduated from Ward Melville High School in 2010. She was hooded by her sister, Nishana Weerasooriya, at the May 17 ceremony.

BY RITA J. EGAN As soon-to-be Stony Brook University graduates filled Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium May 18, the college celebrated a milestone of its own with a record-breaking 7,350 students donning caps and gowns. This year marked the largest graduating class in the university’s history.

Among the degrees awarded were 4,530 bachelors, 2,035 masters, 620 doctoral and professional and 265 certificates, according to the university. The Class of 2018 included graduates from 43 states and 73 countries ranging in age from 18 to 77.

SBU President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. acknowledged a few of the members of the Class of 2018 for extraordinary accomplishments. Among them was Ann Lin for being the first in her family to attend college and

for her studies on genes associated with survival from cancer being published.

Stanley said 10 graduating members of the women’s lacrosse team could not be present due to practicing on the road for their NCAA tournament game. The team was ranked first in the country and undefeated during the regular season but lost in the quarterfinals of the tournament to Boston College the next day.

Tracy Smith, poet laureate of the United States, accepted an honorary degree at the ceremony. She shared some advice with the graduates advising them to use words with care, integrity and discipline.

“Every mindful action has the potential to be troubling,” she said after accepting her award. “Be poets pushing your words, your thoughts, your wishes and your dreams to a place where ‘troubling’ is possible.”

Ward Melville had a handful of members place in the Top 5 of multiple events during the Suffolk County girls track and field division championships May 21 at Connetquot.

Senior Sam Rutt was the Patriot that powered her way to the highest finish. She crossed the finish line a second behind the topplace finisher in the 800-meter run, clocking in at 2 minutes, 16.82 seconds. Her teammate Allyson Gaedje was milliseconds behind her.

The senior finished the stretch in 2:16.91.

Freshman Brianna Grant also placed in the event, coming in eighth (2:23.33). All together the athletes collected five of the team’s total 16 points, which were collected through just five events scored. The Patriots team finished second in scoring behind Longwood.

Senior Sam Sturgess came in third in the 400 hurdles (1:06.61) and junior Kate Cochran finished fifth in the 3,000-meter run (11:26.11).

The 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay teams also competed, coming in fifth and fourth, respectively.

Freshman Lauren Moore placed in the high jump (seventh), shot put (10th) and 100 hurdles (10th).

The brothers, a senior and junior, each scored three times in the Suffolk County Class A quarterfinal win. Dylan Pallonetti added an assist.

Ten different players scored during the win, with seniors Zach Hobbes and Matt Grillo each netting two. Hobbes also contributed two assists.

Ward Melville, which led 7-1 at halftime, held the Tigers scoreless during the second and third quarters. Goalkeeper Collin Krieg made five saves between the pipes.

Ward Melville ends the season 15-8 overall, and finished second to Longwood in League I with a 14-6 record.

Einstein’s academic accomplishments pioneering modern physics are unparalleled, but Einstein is far from the only Jewish-American who has had a profound effect on even the most commonplace aspects of American life. In 1829, Levi Strauss was born to an Ashkenazi Jewish family in Germany. At the age of 18, Strauss traveled to the United States where he would invent and patent the quintessential American garment — the blue jean — and found the worldrenowned denim company Levi’s.

In his success, Levi Strauss went on to become one of San Francisco’s biggest philanthropists, giving to the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and Home, Eureka Benevolent Society and Hebrew Board of Relief.

Levi Strauss’ success, generosity and passion for giving back to his community is representative

of the Jewish people as a whole.

Throughout hundreds of years, Jewish-Americans have worked to make our nation a better place for their fellow Americans, advocating for women’s rights, marching alongside the leaders of the civil rights movement, serving in every branch of the military and working at every level of government.

The passion, spirit and character of the Jewish people is something I have aspired to foster in our community and our nation’s capital. In the same way Jewish-American History Month was founded, the importance of passing on the traditions of the Jewish people to the next generation should be agreed upon unanimously.

Founded in its rich culture and history, the Jewish-American community has shaped the soul of our country, their ideals sewn into the very fabric of American life. Through their actions and willingness to stand shoulder to shoulder with their fellow Americans, they have truly made our nation and our entire world a better place for mankind.

Wherever you are or whatever you do over the upcoming

weekend, it is my hope that we all take a moment to say thank you to the men and women of our armed forces and to remember those who perished fighting for our freedoms.

That could be as simple as saying thank you to a veteran in your life or in your community, or attending a community commemoration.

Our military veterans and active duty personnel are the reason we enjoy the life we do as Americans and it is imperative that our nation never forget these true heroes. Every day, they protect and preserve our rights and freedoms and they should know how grateful we are for their service. Thank you very much and please have a safe Memorial Day weekend.

While we wait for the federal government to do something about gun control, kids are dying in America’s schools.

For children and school staff members to be filled with fear and anxiety every day thinking they may get killed is unacceptable.

Fortunately, there are things that can be done on the local level, even in our homes, to make schools — places that should foster learning, not fear — safer in the short term.

Fox News recently reported nearly 40 deaths and various injuries resulted from school shootings since the beginning of 2017 in 15 elementary and secondary schools. CNN, which includes universities in its reports, said 22 learning institutions have been the site of shootings in 2018 alone, accounting for more than 30 deaths. Hitting closer to home, Suffolk County Police Department Capt. Kevin Williams spoke at a May 8 Smithtown Town Board meeting and said since the Parkland, Florida, shooting Feb. 14, the 4th Precinct has received a threat against Smithtown-area schools approximately once a day. He said that trend holds true across Suffolk County.

What do we do on the local level? We have covered a number of school board meetings where parents have been allowed to debate about what they feel are the best solutions to keep their children and staff members safe. While some of these board meetings have gone on for hours, due to resistance to ideas like armed guards and metal detectors, keeping our children safe is worth every hour spent at these meetings and every penny the district pays for new measures that will help keep kids out of harm’s way. We encourage parents to keep speaking up. As a result of responding to concerns, many school districts have added additional psychologists to their staffs, too, to allow for easier accessibility. New York State Legislature passed a package of bills in the wake of Parkland allotting more dollars to security and mental health services to districts that want them.

Another example of parents and school administration working together to find solutions occurred at the Shoreham-Wading River’s March 6 board of education meeting. Superintendent Gerard Poole outlined measures the school was taking after the shooting in Parkland. Among the plans was installing a Raptor Visitor Management System in all buildings, a web-based monitoring software designed to track visitors and electronically check them against public databases.

The same meeting also included a forum for students to express their concerns and give suggestions on how to better protect their schools.

A web-based app called “report it,” which many Long Island school districts are using, was also introduced earlier this month to help encourage students to speak up when they see or hear things that trouble them or make them uncomfortable.

School is not the only place where something can be done while we wait. If you own a gun, and keep it in your home, keep it locked up and keep the bullets secured in a separate location. Most of all, explain to your children and teens that a gun is not a toy. Too many news reports begin with a child getting a hold of a parent’s gun. If you are resistant to stricter gun control laws, we beg you to at least ensure you’ve taken all of the possible steps necessary to lock up your weapons.

There’s the issue of bullying, too. Antonios Pagourtzis, the father of Santa Fe shooter Dimitrios Pagourtzis, claimed his son was bullied at the school. The best conversations about how to treat people can occur at home. Talk to your children about being kind to others and to speak up when they see someone being harassed. Most of all, set a good example.

As journalists, we plan to do our part by continuing to report on the conversations going on at local schools, whether they are happening at a board meeting or during a student-organized walkout.

When it comes to legislation, we have no choice but to wait — but we won’t idly sit by and neither should you.

In December 2005, a resolution recognizing May as Jewish-American Heritage Month passed the House and then the Senate three months later. In a unified front, President George W. Bush reaffirmed this month-long celebration with a presidential proclamation in April 2006. There are few things in our nation’s capital that are agreed upon unanimously, but there is no question when it comes to the contributions of the Jewish people to the fabric of American life.

The history of the Jewish people spans thousands of years, marked by adversity, triumph and a unique Jewish identity that has outlived the Roman Empire, transcended the Middle Ages and prevailed in the face of genocide.

They have made some of the greatest contributions to science, medicine and literature, forever changing our entire way of life while maintaining a community that is uniquely their own.

Notes from a 2017 interview with the late Tom Wolfe

H

ow often do you get to talk to someone whose legend loomed large over your childhood?

Last year, I had the privilege of interviewing author Tom Wolfe, who died last week at the age of 88. Wolfe wrote “The Right Stuff,” “The Bonfire of the Vanities,” and “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test,” among others. I spoke with Wolfe about astronaut Scott Kelly, who was so inspired by “The Right Stuff” that he directed a life he considered somewhat aimless toward

My conversation was rewarding and memorable, so I thought I’d share my interview with the legendary author.

DD: Kelly credits you with putting him on a path that led him to spend almost a year aboard the International Space Station. Is there a satisfaction that comes from that?

TW: Nothing else I’ve written has

had such a beautiful result. He told me he’d been floundering around trying to figure out what to do with his life. He hadn’t been doing well in school. Then he just got the idea of going into space and became an astronaut.

DD: Did you know he took “The Right Stuff” with him?

TW: He sent me from the space station a picture of the cover on his iPad. That was one of the greatest messages I ever got.

DD: Do you think Kelly’s mission increased the excitement about space?

TW: There’s been a general lack of a sense of heroism in much of the post-World War II era and there were people who responded to the space program in general in that fashion.

DD: How does the excitement now compare to the early days of the space program?

TW: John Glenn’s return created a lot of excitement. At that time, we seemed to be at war in space with the Russians. That was what kept the space program going. There was always this threat. It’s very hard to hit the Earth from space. You’ve got three speeds: the speed of what you fired the rocket with, then you’ve got the speed at the end of that opening shot and you’ve got the speed of hitting the

Earth, which is moving.

DD: How do you think people will react to Kelly’s mission?

TW: It remains to be seen whether it inspires young people the way the Mercury program did.

DD: What drove the space program until that point?

TW: Wernher van Braun [a German engineer who played a seminal role in advancing American rocket science] spoke in his last year.

The point of the space program was not to beat the Russians. It was to prepare for the day when the sun burns out and we have to leave Earth and go somewhere else. It’s hard to imagine everybody shipping off to another heavenly body.

DD: Getting back to Kelly, how difficult do you think Kelly’s mission was?

TW: Scott Kelly’s adventures were a test of the human body and the psyche. Being that removed from anybody you could talk to and see must be a terrible stress. That’s what he and others in the space station are chosen for.

DD: Do people like Kelly still need “the right stuff” to be astronauts?

TW: It’s the same except anyone coming into the program is more confident that these things can be done. For Mercury astronauts, these

things were totally new. The odds against you, the odds of death, were very high.

DD: What advice did you give to Kelly when he started writing his book?

TW: Begin at the beginning.

So many of the astronauts and other people who have memorable experiences will start with the adventure to get you interested.

Then, the second chapter, suddenly you’re saying, “Harold Bumberry was born in 1973,” and it makes you take a deep breath [and say], ‘OK, here it comes.” Whereas starting at the beginning always works.

DD: What do you think of the movies made about your books?

TW: I think they’re terrible. Three of my books were made into movies and I disliked them all. The reason being they didn’t do it like I did.

You can’t do a lot of things in a movie that you can in print. You’re better at presenting themes, better at dialogue. You can hear it, you can’t get inside a mind of a character the way you can in print. Movies don’t have time.

DD: What impact did Scott Kelly’s being inspired by your book have on you?

TW: It’s the best compliment I’ve ever gotten.

17. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel, and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office, and asked them to disperse. “But why?” they asked, as

they moved off. “Because I can’t stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer,” he explained to them.

18. A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt, and is named Ahmal. The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him Juan.

Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They’re twins. If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Ahmal.”

19. A dwarf, who was a mystic, escaped from jail. The call went out that there was a small medium at large.

20. And finally, there was the person who sent 20 different puns to his friends with the hope that at least 10 of the puns would make them laugh.
