William Shakespeare once compared a good deed to a candle’s beam, writing it shined in a weary world.

The power of a good deed is something members of Temple Isaiah’s Social Action Committee have known for decades. For the last 20 years, they have organized a cleanup at West Meadow Beach in Setauket, according to Iris Schiff, the committee’s chairwoman.

Once calling the volunteer opportunity Mitzvah Day, the group has now dubbed it Good Deeds Day, which occurred globally April 15. But the Stony Brook temple celebrates it later in the month when days are a bit warmer. Schiff said this year the Stony Brook temple invited congregants of Setauket Presbyterian Church to join them.

On April 29, after a communal brunch at the synagogue, a handful of volunteers headed to the beach.

Barbara Curtis, a member of Setauket Presbyterian who organized church volunteers, was present with bag in hand.

“A Good Deeds Day brings our faith communities together in the very best way,” Curtis said. “We are hoping that other faiths will join with us in the future.”

The Rev. Mary Barrett Speers, pastor of Setauket Presbyterian Church, said in an email the beach was the perfect spot for the joint community project.

“I personally love the idea because all God’s children share God’s earth,” Rev. Barrett Speers said. “We all love West Meadow Beach, and right after Earth Day, what better way is there to celebrate our beach than by caring for it?”

Schiff said the beach was in excellent condition, and after a couple of hours of cleaning up, they only had about a half a dozen bags filled with bottle tops, balloons, cans and random pieces of plastic.

She said the cleanup wasn’t the only good deed of the day. In the morning, children from the temple painted and decorated wood crates and donated them to Setauket Presbyterian Church’s Open Door Exchange, an outreach program that redistributes furniture to those in need. A few families also volunteered with Great Strides Long Island Inc. at Saddle Rock Ranch in Middle Island, a nonprofit organization that helps developmentally disabled children ride horses.

After the beach cleanup, Schiff said she felt good about the day.

“Everybody was just right on the same page and feeling the same way,” she said.

“I’m really hoping that next year we’re able to expand this and bring in some of the other faith communities.”

Carolyn Brown-Benson recently recorded ‘Forever in My Heart,’ a song dedicated to military members and their loved ones.

“If they have somebody that they are missing terribly, whether they are here or passed, that it will give them a memory or a glimpse or make them feel like that person is right next to them,” the singer said. “And to remember that they’re not that far away, even distance or death, they’re always right there next to you.”

Brown-Benson said she hopes once the song premieres Memorial Day on the syndicated Armed Forces Radio, which broadcasts to service members around the world, that other radio stations across the country will pick it up. She also hopes it will inspire civilians to see what they can do to help current

and former military personnel. As the daughter of an ex-Marine, who served during the Korean War, she is familiar with the sacrifices of armed forces members. “These people protect [our] rights every day and leave families and jobs behind,” she said.

Brown-Benson said she is still searching for an organization to donate to and has found that several nonprofits need help. She has received suggestions of organizations that build homes for vets and those who provide canine companions, to those that fly military members home, but is open to more ideas.

The importance of helping former and current military members is something Joe Cognitore, Rocky Point VFW Post 6249 commander, knows well. He and his post have raised funds for many vets, including helping to build them homes. He said he is touched when he hears about endeavors like those of Brown-Benson and Devio.

“As a vet it makes me feel elated, because they don’t have to do that,” he said, adding he knows other vets feel the same.

When it comes to creating the video for the single, the singer needs others’ help in another way. Brown-Benson wants to incorporate photos of service men and women with their families in the video. The singer said she is also thinking of adding letters sent during deployment from contributors to the video.

VILLAGE Stony Brook Eagle Scout creates opportunities for blessings

Blessings have been popping up more and more at churches in the Three Village area thanks to a Stony Brook Eagle Scout.

Matthew Seyfert recently achieved the rank right before his 18th birthday. The Ward Melville senior completed a project where he and other Scouts assembled seven wood structures like the Little Free Libraries found all over Long Island. Called a blessing box, Seyfert said the cabinets will provide spots at seven local churches where congregants can add an item that may be needed by others. The member of Setauket Troop 70 said he completed his project just in time, since boys have until they turn 18 to reach the pinnacle of the program.

“It felt really good, because even though I was a little pressed for time when I started my project, I tried to pick a project that I really didn’t do as a requirement just for completion,” he said. “[It’s] something that would have a larger impact on my community. It

meant a lot to me.”

The Eagle Scout said he was watching the news when he heard about a blessing box in Texas, and thought it was a good idea to create a cabinet for his own place of worship, Stony Brook Community Church, among others. The Scout said church members typically fill the cabinet with items like school supplies at the beginning of the academic year, and socks and gloves or nonperishables in the winter.

When he approached the Rev. Chuck Van Houten, Seyfert said the pastor of Stony Brook Community Church was enthusiastic about the project, and reached out to other church leaders through the Three Village Interfaith Clergy group to see who else would be interested in one.

Van Houten said he was impressed with Seyfert’s endeavor, but added he wasn’t surprised, noting how involved the high school senior has been in the church, and the leadership qualities he possesses.

“I thought it was a great idea, especially since one of the main missions or ministries of our church right now is feeding people in the local school district,” the pastor said.

Once a month church members purchase food for a local food pantry, according to Van Houten, who said the Stony Brook Community Church box will mainly be used to house nonperishables. He said the best part is that people can drop off or pick up items every day, all day, unlike a pantry where dates and times can be limited. In the next few weeks, the Seyferts will join Van Houten in finding a place in front of the church for the blessing box, and he hopes that all community members will use it in the future.

Seyfert said while a few church councils were concerned maintaining a blessing Box may be a big responsibility, he explained it would be on a stand and easy to move, adding it’s up to the congregation what they want to fill them with and how often.

Gregory Leonard, left, of Bethel AME to see if other houses of worship would be interested in receiving one. idea, especially because financial situations can change dramatically with sickness or job loss, and said the need is greater than many would think in the Three Village area. The pair put together a prototype back in November before moving forward.

“I thought it was a well thought out project and well executed,” David Seyfert said.

Matthew Seyfert said future Eagle Scouts need to supervise the projects more than build them, so he got together some fellow Scouts and gave each boy a job based on age. While some did prep-work, others painted and others drilled. His father said local businesses Ace Hardware in Setauket, Riverhead Building Supply, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Omega Moulding Company donated supplies. Seyfert decided they would have roofs in colors that matched each church, after Setauket Presbyterian Church asked what color the boxes would be.

They’ve been placed at six locations so far, including Stony Brook Community Church, Setauket Presbyterian, Bethel AME Church, Caroline Church of Brookhaven, All Souls Episcopal Church and Setauket United Methodist Church. The Scout said he hopes to find a home for the seventh one in the near future. He said he has mixed feelings about the project being over.

“It was a relief, but it was also kind of sad because we were working on it for so long, that it was weird to not be focused on it,” Seyfert said. “But it felt really good to now finally implement them.”

The Eagle Scout project has left him with some advice for other boys looking to achieve the feat.

“Choose something you’re interested in so it’s not as much work,” Seyfert said.

“Also, start early. It’s a lot of planning. You really can’t start without planning.”

Incidents and arrests April 24–30 Stolen property

A 54-year-old man from Port Jefferson allegedly stole a laptop, a Stag Arms brand assault rifle and a bag of coins from a home on Earle Street in Central Islip between April 15 and April 20, according to police. He was arrested April 25 in Port Jefferson and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Shoplifting

At Staples on Nesconset Highway in Terryville March 7 at about 12:30 p.m., a 46-year-old man from Selden allegedly stole headphones, a modem and a router, according to police. He was arrested April 29 in Selden and charged with petit larceny.

Shots fired

On April 28 at about 4 a.m., a 43-year-old man from Selden allegedly fired multiple rounds into the air from a Beretta handgun outside of the rear of his home with other people in the home and in a “densely populated residential area,” according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and prohibited use of a weapon.

Crime spree

A 34-year-old man from Selden was driving a 2005 Ford on South Bicycle Path near the intersection of Manhasset Avenue in Selden at about 8:30 p.m. April 28 when he was allegedly involved in a crash with three parked cars, fled from police in his vehicle, then on foot, and was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and a drug, according to police. He was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, third-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Possession of assault rifle

At Budget Buy & Sell on East Main Street in Patchogue June 6, 2017, at about 2 p.m., a 22-year-old man from Mount Sinai allegedly possessed an assault rifle, according to police. He was arrested April 25 in Selden and charged with thirddegree criminal possession of an assault rifle.

Missing cash

On April 25, a 58-year-old man from West Islip allegedly withdrew cash from his account at Teachers Federal Credit Union on Motor Parkway in Hauppauge and used the cash, despite being told by the bank it was placed in his account mistakenly and being asked to rectify the situation, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny.

Stealing from Lowe’s

A 58-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station allegedly stole a Bluetooth speaker and rechargeable lithium battery from Lowe’s Home Improvement on Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook April 30 at about noon, according to police.

Phone stolen

An iPhone 7 was stolen from Marshalls on Route 25A in Miller Place April 29 at about 5:30 p.m., according to police.

Dunkin’ break-in

SBU da Vinci bridge team wins BeLocal $2,500 prize

In its inaugural year of facilitating student engineering projects to improve the quality of life in Madagascar, BeLocal Group had an enviable problem.

The organization, which was founded by husband and wife team Jeff and Mickie Nagel of Laurel Hollow and Eric Bergerson of Forest Hills, had so many high-quality projects with the potential to solve daily challenges in Madagascar that they had trouble selecting the winner of the $2,500 prize.

“We had really robust debates amongst the entire BeLocal team,” Jeff Nagle said, referring to about eight projects that met several important criteria, including an expectation of impact, innovation and quality of engineering.

Indeed, the BeLocal Group is highlighting the winner and seven finalists on its website, BeLocalGrp.com.

“We saw so many good projects,” Bergerson said. “It’s ultimately about the transfer of knowledge and empowerment.”

The nine members of the judging panel awarded the BeLocal Prize for Student Innovation May 2 to a team that worked on a bridge to cross a stream near the village of Mandrivany. Led by Johnny Donza, the team, which includes Yuxin Xia, Luke Papazian and Manuela Corcho, designed a da Vinci bridge,

so named after the famed Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, who sketched a design for a similar bridge in 1502.

Villagers had been using a log to cross the stream. A broken log was difficult to replace because the island nation is confronting significant deforestation.

Instead of using valuable trees to construct the bridge, the Stony Brook University team turned to the plentiful bamboo.

Donza came up with the idea for the design after watching a video on YouTube of the Rainbow Bridge in China. A few clicks later, he said he stumbled on the da Vinci bridge, which is a simpler concept.

Stony Brook students produced a range of designs. Many homes in Madagascar cook their food inside, where they produce smoke from briquettes. The children who stay inside during cooking time struggle with breathing problems, as the particulates from the briquettes create a hazard.

Jeff Nagel said they don’t have a lot of aeration in their homes. Inhaling the fumes from briquettes made of raw wood or poorly made charcoal causes respiratory disease.

Michael Downey led a team that presses a mash made by another Stony Brook team including Timothy Hart into briquettes using biowaste from rice husks and casaba peels.

PVC tubing and some nuts and bolts, can produce four briquettes in a minute, Downey said. The other members of Downey’s team were Robert Michael, Adam Smith and Arie Spiel.

“The charcoal burns cleaner than regular wood,” Downey added.

The ideas for specific needs came from

a trip BeLocal coordinated last summer in which graduate students Acacia Leakey and Leila Esmailzada traveled with Mickie Nagel to Madagascar with video cameras to learn about local needs.

This summer, BeLocal will send a larger contingent of students to Madagascar. Hart, Donza and Downey will travel with Sean Peters, Sunny Cheng and Robert Myrick. The team will build four prototypes of various designs. Donza and Downey were excited about their postgraduation trip to the island of lemurs.

“Most people, when [they] graduate, they start working or go into an office and sit behind a computer,” Donza said. “This is a chance to go to the opposite side of the world and help people.”

Downey added that the “whole point of becoming an engineer is to change the world.”

While the students are exploring new areas with their designs, BeLocal is also planning to broaden out its work. The organization is looking to gather information and foster innovation in other countries next year. It has also spoken with faculty at several other universities, as well as with nongovernmental organizations.

“It is the goal of BeLocal to provide the leverage of global innovation to challenges sourced around the globe,” Bergerson said in an email.

On April 18, The Stony Brook School hosted the Three Village Chamber in Kanas Commons. The day was proclaimed Jane Taylor Day in the Town of Brookhaven as the chamber recognized Taylor, chamber member and assistant head of The Stony Brook School, with the 2018 Chamber Member of the Year award for her active involvement and commitment to developing and promoting the Three Village community.

Taylor, as assistant head of school, was also recently acknowledged for her outstanding tenure at the school, where she served a great variety of roles in her 44year career.

The chamber welcomed town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) as the event’s keynote speaker, followed by a word from Joshua Crane, the Stony Brook head of school. Also in attendance were chamber President Andy Polan and Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station).

“Chambers are the backbone of our community,” Romaine said, as he spoke to issues regarding reformation in zoning, traffic control and community development.

Creative solutions to minimizing traffic on Route 347 and Nicolls Road outside of Stony Brook University’s entrance were mentioned, as well as discussion of the impact of gas stations and shopping centers along Route 25A on community experience.

Recently, Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station), center, met with Brownie Troop 150 at the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express where the girls worked to earn their hospitality badges. The troop, from Minnesauke Elementary School in East Setauket, enjoyed a tour of the hotel and met with staff members to discuss the hospitality industry and customer service.

The tour was followed by a rock painting project during which the Brownies decorated rocks with positive messages that will be placed on site at the hotel to

welcome visitors. Guests can choose a rock to take with them as a reminder of their visit to the hotel and Stony Brook.

The councilwoman spoke with the girls about some of her own responsibilities to the community and explained how constituent services and customer service are related.

“The messages penned by these young ladies on their individual rocks reflected a spirit of hope, encouragement and love,” Cartright said. “I can imagine what these girls will accomplish in the future because they have already started making a positive impact in our community.”

Matt Grillo brought the scoring for the Patriots Tuesday, using his speed and athleticism to put away six goals in the first half of Ward Melville’s 19-5 home win against Northport.

The senior was quick to share the credit.

“Our offense played great today,” said Grillo, as 10 different players got on the scoreboard. “Everyone was moving together, which opened up lanes for me and I was able to capitalize.”

But a performance like he had is something the attack has been working hard for. After senior Malachy McAvoy (four goals, two assists) got things going with back-to-back scores, Grillo put away three straight goals in just 1:37 of game time.

The first came off a flick from Pallonetti.

Grillo grabbed the ball for mere milliseconds before rocketing the ball into the netting from 10 yards out. His third goal came when he was caught off guard by a shifting defender, found a diagonal lane toward the right side of the cage and fired over his shoulder and behind his back while he raced past it.

“I always try to have a quick, smooth transition from when I receive the ball to when I release it,” Grillo said. “It helps to make what I’m going to do less predictable.

I always love to shoot from all different angles and areas of the field. It makes me more dangerous as an offensive player, and I’ve practiced these different shots many times over the years in order to be able to execute them during a game.”

Head coach Jay Negus said his captain’s capabilities don’t surprise him.

“I expect that from him,” Negus said.

“He practices hard and spends a lot of time with his stick.”

Pallonetti (two goals, four assists), who helped on McAvoy’s hat trick goal that put Ward Melville (10-1) up 8-0 to end the first quarter, scored what would end up being

the game-winning goal at the 3:32 mark of the first quarter.

“We have built a very strong connection,” Grillo said of working with his junior teammate. “We are always looking for each other — helping each other get good looks.

Today he did a very good job of keeping his eyes up and moving in, once he drew the slide, which really helped our offense out.”

Giaquinto was 20-for-20 on faceoffs, winning possessions early that grew crucial when the Patriots’ bench players stepped in to compete in the second half, up 15-0.

“I’ve been real impressed the last three games with how they’ve come out firing right away, been consistent, and that’s something we’ve been preaching to them constantly,” Negus said. “It took us a little

while, and it took a loss [7-6 at Half Hollow Hills East April 18] to be a good learning lesson. I was really happy with how we got to the ground balls, the unselfish play and how we were locking it down defensively.

Collin [Krieg, seven saves] was great in goal as well as the poles around him. All the guys are putting in hard work and it shows on different days, which is a good thing, but we’ve got to keep pushing to get better because we’re not satisfied with where we’re at right now. We just have to keep getting better every day.”

School budget votes count

As we sit crunching numbers for 2018-19 proposed school budgets, we can’t help but wonder how many parents and taxpayers are paying attention. We already know the answer — not enough.

School taxes make up more than 60 percent of the average homeowner’s property taxes in Suffolk County, according to a 2017 analysis done by ATTOM Data Solutions, a real-estate information firm. Despite this fact, voter turnout for school budgets remains dreadfully low year after year.

In May 2017, the ballots cast by a mere 412 people determined how Port Jefferson School District would spend its more than $43 million to educate about 1,000 enrolled students. Now, its taxpayers face coming to terms with a settlement of Long Island Power Authority’s lawsuit over the tax assessment of the power plant and what it might mean for their wallets.

To cast an educated vote May 15 on your district’s proposed 201819 school budget is a test of every Long Island taxpayer. There’s a little more than a week left, so start studying.

Ever since the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting Feb. 14, this year has been marked by tense debates between students, parents and school administrators over school safety. On March 14, Rocky Point High School students participated in the National School Walkout despite knowing they would face in-school suspension. These students brought their dissention to the board of education trustees. Elections for these vital positions are held annually during the budget vote.

Unfortunately, only 909 people in Rocky Point voted in 2017 on who would be determining if the students’ punishment was fair.

The most direct way to make changes in a school district’s policy is to vote and become involved. The elected trustees on a board of education participate in the lowest form of government, smaller than the town or county government, but that shouldn’t reflect on the importance of the job. By running and winning a seat on the board, one can propose changes to a school district’s security measures or educational policies.

This civic involvement is vital to bringing about change.

Yet all too often board of education races have little to no contest.

The board of education trustee races tend to have even fewer ballots cast than the annual budget.

If Long Islanders want to be a force of change behind the factors creating high property taxes and have a say on poignant issues like school security, get out and vote. Ask questions of your board of education candidates to find out where they stand. Attend budget presentations to see exactly how your tax dollars are being spent. The polls will be open Tuesday, May 15. Take five minutes while dropping off or picking up your child from school to cast your ballot. It can make a difference in their education, and then you too can say you’ve done your homework.

Drawing attention away from guns Jim Soviero’s letter on the opioid tragedy, “Redirecting energy toward overdoses” in The Village Times Herald April 19 edition, is filled with non sequiturs and a few glaring omissions. What is his point?

Is it to suggest that Jeff Sessions’ justice department reverse its new punitive approach to drug, particularly marijuana, users, and return to Obama’s more lenient policy? No. To show mercy to those jailed during the crack cocaine epidemic, let alone those jailed for marijuana possession? Never.

To demand further prosecution of the Sackler family’s Purdue Pharma, which knowingly flooded our nation with OxyContin — the alternative to crystal meth and the real start of the opioid crisis — far in excess of legitimate medical needs? No. Purdue was fined $600 million in 2006 for criminally marketing OxyContin “with the intent to defraud or mislead,” a drop in the bucket of the $13 billion fortune it extracted from

the crime. So? Drug abuse is driven by despair: economic uncertainty, poverty and the family crises these provoke. And it costs about $500 billion a year. Does Soviero propose any government plan to ameliorate, let alone solve, these social problems? Of course not.

Democrats Elizabeth Warren and Elijah Cummings’ bill provides for treatment, support and research.

Soviero’s only goal here is to draw attention away from gun control by minimizing the effects of gun violence and incidentally, accusing the March for Our Lives protesters, whose success clearly disturbs him, of moral turpitude in not switching their campaign to opioids.

Soviero first notes that overdose fatalities exceed gun homicides.

And AR-15s account for only 400 of them. Tell that to the parents of teenagers in Parkland, or the parents of 20 six-year-olds in Newtown, Connecticut. So, what?

Lung cancer kills 150,000 annually, but we hear no criticism of tobacco companies. Soviero also does not mention gun suicides, about 22,000 annually: If there’s a gun handy, people will use it.

Soviero makes no mention of gun trafficking at all: How illegal guns from lax “red” states kill in Chicago and New York, as Attorney General Eric Schneiderman found.

In short, Soviero is a fervent supporter of the second half of the Second Amendment and an equally fervent opponent of the first half, which reads, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State.” We know this from his earlier letters opposing New York’s Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act regulating handgun magazine size and prohibiting assault rifles. Let him continue this advocacy but spare us the crocodile tears about opioid abuse.

Leadership in LIPA dispute Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine and Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant are on the front lines of protecting the taxpayers. Their leadership has sought to create a tentative agreement with LIPA that creates a fair and equitable phase-down tax agreement that reduces energy costs for Brookhaven residents while providing a generous cushion to the affected taxpayers within the village. They both recognized that the other option, going to trial, would likely result in a draconian decision that could leave village and town residents on the hook for

hundreds of millions of dollars in back tax payments.

Unfortunately, the Port Jefferson School District would have you believe otherwise as they have very little to lose if the court would rule against them. The fact is the school district would not be responsible for the hundreds of millions in back payments. Rather, it would fall on the village and town as the assessing jurisdiction which means the school district bears none of the responsibility in throwing dice with your tax money. Yes, the district stands to lose several million dollars in

annual revenue but it’s hard to imagine that would concern a school administration that thought it was OK to propose a $30 million bond issue with an estimated 5 percent tax increase that would permit, among other things, the creation of a new office for the district superintendent.

Supervisor Romaine and Mayor Garant worked hard to protect the property owners wallets by seeking a deal that recognizes the buck ultimately stops with the taxpayer.

Personal attacks are unproductive It is useful and permissible for our fellow townspeople to write letters to this fine newspaper so that various ideas, especially those involving political issues, can be openly discussed. However, I have come to believe that we should strictly avoid personal attacks on our neighboring citizens. Such attacks are usually pointless and unproductive, and they create unnecessary tensions.

In recent years I have tried to avoid regarding our newspaper as a boxing ring, as I sometimes

regrettably did in the past. I now believe that personal attacks on our neighboring villagers should be avoided.

On the other hand, it is perfectly acceptable to discuss publicly what politicians say, do or undo. We need to praise or criticize their words or deeds, since officeholders’ utterances and actions invariably result in beneficial or disastrous consequences for the public. Politicians must never be ignored; they must be openly lauded or corrected

because what they do or say or plan affects everyone, positively or negatively. Consequently, their statements, scribblings and ideas must be openly analyzed, debated and subjected to the judgment of the American people.

Top 10 speech mistakes to avoid

T

his is the season for speeches.

We’re about to enter the graduation and wedding time of year, when principals, best men, maids of honor and valedictorians stand in front of a group of people and share their thoughts during these momentous occasions.

For those about to grab the microphone, I’d like to offer my top 10 list of things not to do in a speech — in reverse order.

10. Don’t make inside jokes that no one, outside of your best friend

By Daniel Dunaief and maybe your sibling, understands. Looking at your friend after you’ve made a joke that no one gets and pointing back and forth between this other person and you only endangers that friendship.

9. Don’t make a speech without practicing. Find someone who can be helpful and not someone who thinks you shouldn’t change anything you do, ever. That honest person might prevent you from saying, “The groom is so lucky. He gets to sleep with Karen — I always wanted to sleep with Karen. I can’t wait to hear about it.”

8. Don’t correct yourself on small details, such as, “Remember when we had that school snowball fight in second grade? No, wait it was first grade, right? No, no, it was second grade. I was right the first time.”

Most people won’t care about those details. They’d rather you got it wrong than hear you go play a one person game of memory ping-pong.

7. Don’t forget to thank everyone you should thank. You can acknowledge your friends for helping you get through those tough years, the writers of your favorite movies for giving you a chance to laugh, and the woman at the supermarket for encouraging you to submit an application that got

you into a summer program. Never forget to thank your parents, any relatives who are in attendance and the teachers who somehow managed to educate you despite your insistence that their subject was irrelevant.

6. Don’t imagine that alcohol makes you a better singer. It doesn’t.

Besides, there’s always an enormous collection of cellphones at any wedding. You can’t erase that horrible rendition of “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.” Ever. Strangers will come up to you and screech at you.

5. Don’t quote someone else extensively. Winston Churchill was a tremendous speechmaker, JFK said some memorable things, too, as did Martin Luther King Jr. Audiences can read and have no desire to hear you butcher an extensive collection of words someone else delivered.

4. Don’t try to sell something.

You’re there to support the graduate, the bride and groom and numerous families. This isn’t the time to suggest that people moved by your speech can pick up tissues at your store

because you sell the softest tissues in town.

3. Don’t talk about how difficult it is for you to give a speech. Chances are the audience supports you anyway, so there is no need to tell them, over and over again. If you aren’t particularly good at public speaking, they’ll notice.

2. Don’t look down at your poorly written notes during the entire speech. If you look up once in a while, you won’t sound like you’re muttering anecdotes and advice in your sleep.

1. Don’t give a long speech. The most important part of any speech is to keep it short. Sure, you might be funny and have some words of wisdom that people will remember.

And, yes, you might recall an anecdote that sheds light on the people in your class. People want to eat dessert, go to a party, or throw their ridiculous square hats with tassels into the air for the annual picture of stupid hats in the air. A good rule of thumb for speeches: When in doubt, leave it out.

The invisible hand of China behind the current Korean dance

or those of us who remember the savage Korean War (195053) and the various attempts at a peace treaty over the years, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un’s pirouette from warmonger to statesman is astonishing. All of us remember the test missiles that were fired from North Korea, some over Japan, into the sea as recently as last year.

We also remember the bellicose rhetoric about being able to

What happened?

First there was President Donald Trump’s equally bellicose rhetoric, some of it personally aimed at North Korea’s leader, referred to as “Little Rocket Man.” Trump was severely

criticized at the time for sounding like a schoolyard bully rather than a diplomatic leader. The world watched in horror, wondering if we were on the edge of nuclear war.

All the while North Korea’s ongoing tests were apparently successful.

Probably the most concerned was South Korea’s new leader, Moon Jae-in.

Next came the Winter Olympics serendipitously and President Moon’s invitation to the North Koreans to participate under one flag. This too was unprecedented. Kim accepted and perhaps more tellingly sent his sister as his representative. She seems to be one family member he trusts. We all witnessed the diplomatic success at the Olympics.

In retrospect, something seems to have changed after that. Was it a new perspective for the two Koreas as a result of the games? Or did it have some connection to the subsequent visit Kim made to China in the middle of one night? I believe that was Kim’s first trip out of his country, and of course it is significant that he chose to visit Premier Xi Jinping. Was Kim invited or did he

request the meeting? What advice was he given by the powerful Chinese leader, who seems to have established a rapport with Trump? What will the Chinese, with their long-term view, want to happen now?

At this point, Kim has been counseled, Moon has been galvanized and the tenor of the Korean debate begins to shift. Kim invites Trump to meet with him, and over the objections of our diplomats, Trump immediately accepts. There is no doubt that Trump is partially responsible for this shift.

The two Korean leaders then enter into a diplomatic choreography with lots of positive dialogue that plays well for the people of both Koreas, and the rest of the world for that matter, who want peace. In war, it is humankind that suffers terribly, and the people can only hope and pray for their leaders to keep the peace.

So what does North Korea want, as far as we can tell? Certainly Kim wants to stay in power as the No. 1 priority. So far his most visible achievement is his development of nuclear missiles. He also professes to want an improved economy. In fact,

he was surprisingly forthright about the woeful condition of his roads and infrastructure in talking with Moon. When North Koreans went to the Olympics, they were apparently impressed by the South’s trains — and probably everything else that attests to a good economy.

The South wants to eliminate the threat of nuclear war and confrontation. And perhaps it wishes to invest in the economic recovery of the North, where there will be money to be made. The Chinese would like to see the United States leave the Korean Peninsula. I would be keenly interested in what else China expert Henry Kissinger thinks the Chinese want. Undoubtedly the South would also like to see us go if peace is somehow assured. There are some 30,000 American troops still stationed in South Korea.

And what would we like? We would first like the removal of nuclear weapons from North Korea and finally a formal peace treaty ending the 65-year conflict.

Those goals have seemed irreconcilable until now but perhaps what we will get is a prolonged peace.
