It’s part of Supervisor Ed Romaine’s (R) Greening Brookhaven initiative to plant 10,000 trees by the year 2020. Mulch and compost is available in bags or in bulk, so residents must bring shovels and containers to load it into their vehicles.

All items will be distributed on a firstcome, first-served basis while supplies last.

Stony Brook nature preserve dedicated to honor longtime Suffolk planner ALEX PETROSKI

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM A public servant with more than four decades of planning experience now has a nature preserve with his name on it to honor his life’s work.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (DPort Jefferson Station) hosted a ceremony at Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Community in South Setauket April 13 to dedicate a 46-acre parcel of woodlands in Stony Brook in honor of Lee Koppelman, who served as the first Suffolk County planner, a position he held for 28 years. He also served as regional planner for Suffolk and Nassau counties for 41 years.

“When you come to talk about preserving land; when you come to talk about planning communities; when you come to talk about vision; when you come to talk about master planners and you put that with Suffolk County, only one name comes up,” Romaine said of Koppelman. “When I look at the picture of the woods that will be named for Dr. Koppelman I can think of no better tribute to this man … Suffolk is in a large part what it is today because of this man’s vision, our master planner.”

Romaine lauded Koppelman for his dedication to preserving nature, including shoreline, wooded areas, wetlands and more.

According to a press release from the town, Koppelman is regarded as the father of sustainability on Long Island,

calling him the first of the “power players” to conceptualize the idea of preserving space in the interest of health and future generations.

The Dr. Lee Koppelman Nature Preserve is a heavily wooded parcel with a variety of deciduous tree and shrub species, or foliage that sheds its leaves annually. The town has owned the Stony Brook property just east of Nicolls Road and south of Stony Brook University for about 45 years, using it as passive open space.

Cartright said she was honored to be a part of the dedication to such a prominent figure who had an impact on her district.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t have as much time to work with Dr. Koppleman as it relates to land use and planning, but it is clear to me he has left an indelible mark here within our community,” she said.

Koppelman joked that he wished the ceremony didn’t sound so much like a eulogy, though he said he was honored to be recognized by people he had considered friends for so long.

“Having that from them is a particular pleasure,” he said.

His wife Connie was also in attendance and joked she had heard her husband honored so many times it was getting old, but called it very pleasing to hear once again how much his work was appreciated by those around him.

Koppelman currently heads the Center for Regional Policy Studies at Stony Brook University.

A decision on dock bids was tabled until May. The board will vote on the final 201819 budget in an upcoming meeting.

That will allow the district to add three teaching assistants plus an additional 0.5 FTE from junior high science staffing — again, due to lower enrollment — to help prepare for the 2020 implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards, Pedisich said. Two more teaching assistants will come from existing staffing.

The Three Village free preschool program at Nassakeag Elementary School will continue into its second year. By the end of March, there were already 128 children enrolled, up from 109 this school year. The district can accommodate up to 200 students and has budgeted up to five FTEs for teachers should the program reach capacity.

Carlson said there will be an increase in the district’s contributions to the employee and teacher retirement systems. To cover the $1.5 million increase, the district will use funds from its reserves, which, he said, are set aside to cover employee retirement costs.

The vote to approve the budget will be held Tuesday, May 15, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Like last year, for security reasons, the vote will take place at the secondary schools.

Those zoned for Arrowhead, Minnesauke and Nassakeag elementary schools will vote at Ward Melville High School, while residents zoned for W.S. Mount Elementary School will vote at Murphy Junior High.

Families zoned for Setauket Elementary will vote at P.J. Gelinas Junior High.

The Three Village Central School District Board of Education has adopted a $209.8 million budget for the 2018-19 school year, a 2.62 percent increase.

Among its proposals are additional resources for student mental health and counseling services, athletic training and elementary science.

Jeff Carlson, assistant superintendent for business services, who outlined the budget at the Apr. 12 meeting, said it will stay within the 1.97 percent cap on the tax levy increase. There will also be no cuts for budgetary reasons, he said.

As far as revenue, New York State will give the district an additional $833,579 in state aid, for a total of $34.5 million, Carlson said. The amount does not include building aid, which is tied to specific capital improvements and varies from year to year, he said.

He was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle without a required interlock device.

A 27-year-old woman from Ridge allegedly sold heroin on four separate occasions in Selden and Centereach between March 2017 and June 2017, according to police. She was arrested April 13 in Rocky Point and charged with four counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

At a 7-Eleven on Patchogue Road in Port Jefferson Station, a 32-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station allegedly stole a case of Heineken at about 9 p.m. April 13, according to police. He was arrested April 14 and charged with petit larceny.

A 24-year-old woman from Amityville allegedly possessed stolen checks exceeding $11,000 which she deposited into her account at Bethpage Federal Credit Union, according to police. She was arrested April 16 in Selden and charged with third-degree grand larceny and seconddegree possession of a forged instrument.

On Lily Drive in Centereach April 14 at about 9 p.m., a 33-year-old woman from Centereach was driving a 2013 Hyundai and was involved in a crash with another vehicle, according to police.

Police discovered she was allegedly driving while under the influence of drugs, police said. She also allegedly possessed Xanax without a valid prescription, according to police. She was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

A Cuisinart brand mixer and a computer modem were stolen from Walmart on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket April 9 at about 7 p.m., according to police. A police report was filed April 13.

Hit-and-run

While on Fountain Avenue in Selden April 11 at about 3 p.m., a 42-year-old woman from Selden was allegedly involved in a motor vehicle crash with another vehicle and fled the scene without exchanging information with the other driver, according to police. She was arrested April 16 and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

On April 10 at about 5 p.m., a 53-yearold woman from Setauket driving a 1996 Mercury on Route 25A in Setauket allegedly collided with a 1999 Chevrolet and left the scene of the accident without exchanging information, according to police. She was arrested April 16 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Between June 2016 and March 2018, a 36-year-old man from Selden allegedly sold cocaine on an ongoing basis, according to police. He was arrested April 13 in Selden and charged with fourthdegree criminal possession of a narcotic and second-degree conspiracy.

A license plate was stolen off a vehicle parked in front of a home on West Gate Drive in Mount Sinai April 16 at about midnight, according to police.

Vacant home break-in

A window was broken and copper pipes were stolen from a vacant home on Radio Avenue in Miller Place April 15 at about 11:30 p.m., according to police.

Two Kitchenaid brand mixers were stolen from Walmart on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket April 15 at about 8 a.m., according to police.

Two rotary hammers were stolen from The Home Depot on Pond Path in South Setauket Feb. 12 at about 1:30 p.m., according to police. The items were reported stolen April 13.

OBITUARY Former Nissequogue Village mayor Gordon Hall dies at 93 Civic volunteer was resident of South Setauket’s Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Community in final years Gordon Taylor Hall, 93, a longtime Nissequogue resident and civic volunteer died March 9 at his residence at Jefferson’s Ferry in South Setauket.

Hall was born in Montclair, New Jersey, son of Frederick and Marjorie Hall. He was educated at Wooster School in Danbury, Connecticut, where he spent five years, living in the “Farmhouse,” as it was called.

He graduated at the top of his senior class, receiving the Rensselaer Alumni Association Prize for Excellence in Mathematics and Science. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he majored in aeronautical and industrial engineering but found his calling in aviation. He enrolled in the Naval ROTC, and with World War II escalating, he transferred to the Navy’s V-5 program and served with Patrol Bombing Squadron VPB-32, flying surveillance missions in the South Pacific, completing his tour in Saipan.

Upon returning to civilian life, he completed his undergraduate education at Rutgers University before receiving his juris doctorate degree from Cornell University. During this period, he found the time to meet and marry Louise Powell, purchase one of those “1800s farmhouses” he found so endearing and raise a family.

During his professional career he was a member of the New Jersey and New York bar associations, a partner at the New York City law firm of Jackson & Nash and in private practice specializing in the areas of real estate, banking and municipal law. He used his expertise to serve his community and dedicated himself to civic duty in the Village of Nissequoque, where he moved in 1959.

He was drawn to the St. James area as a result of summers spent with his uncle and cousin at Deepwells Farm. He served in many roles including village attorney, police commissioner, planning board chairman, fire commissioner and two terms as mayor. For many years, he held the post of deputy police commissioner before retiring at age 91.

Hall had business interests that included the formation of a weather forecasting service for private pilots and real estate development. He also formed a partnership with artist Eric Sloane to market prints of the artist’s best paintings.

He was a lifelong member of the Wooster School Alumni/ae Council, was council president and ex-officio member of the board of trustees and class agent. At his 60th Wooster School Reunion, he was honored by the council with the 27th

Possessed of athletic ability, Hall held memberships in Montclair Golf Club, National Golf Links of America and Nissequogue Golf Club. Also fond of racquet sports, he enjoyed tennis at Nissequogue Point Beach Club and became so enamored of platform tennis that he constructed a court in 1962 and formed the Nissequogue Platform Tennis Association. He took pride in seeing the “paddle habit” established in multiple generations of family and friends.

Hall is survived by his beloved wife, Louise; three sons, Frederick, of Bellport, Stuart (Robin) of Halifax, Massachusetts, and Winthrop of Ronkonkoma; a daughter Lisa (Keith) Reed of Three Forks, Montana; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Bruce.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held May 12 at 11 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 490 North Country Road in St. James.

BY KEVIN LOCKERBIE The Rev. Canon Paul F. Wancura, 87, former rector of Caroline Church of Brookhaven, died April 16 while recovering from injuries sustained last month.

Rev. Canon Paul was the victim of a home invasion and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital March 19. Nobody thought he would survive the surgery required that day, let alone battle valiantly for 29 days in the intensive care unit.

A graduate of Queens College and with an MBA from Columbia University, Canon Paul worked for IBM before he was drafted into the service of his country. Upon his return from Europe serving in counterintelligence, he received his master of divinity from The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church and served as rector of his first parish in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

He was appointed the archdeacon of Suffolk County until he was called to Caroline Church of Brookhaven in 1974, where he served as rector for 26 years.

Always willing to serve, Canon Paul became the interim rector for 10 years at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport and then seven months at The Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Central Islip.

Canon Paul was a loving inspiration to all at Caroline Church. He served as a Christian witness to so many over the years.

He was a gifted communicator with a delightful wit and intellect and a wonderful

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon, followed by burial in the churchyard.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket.

Browning is the former 3rd District Suffolk County legislator, a position she held beginning in 2005 before being term limited out of office. She was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, before moving to Germany at 19 years old and eventually landing in Shirley with her husband Steve in 1989. The mother of three was a bus driver in the William Floyd School District prior to taking office.

“Our district deserves a representative that is going to fight for working families in Suffolk County,” Browning says in a section of her website entitled “Why I’m running,” while also touting her ability to work across the political aisle. “I’ve focused on quality of life issues, rehabilitating foreclosed zombie homes and selling them to first-time home buyers, keeping them away from speculators and absentee landlords. And I’ve secured funding for clean water infrastructure to protect our drinking water and our shorelines.”

DiMasi, a political newcomer, was a federal contractor for over 20 years in addition to more than two decades of experience as a project manager and physicist at Brookhaven National Lab. She describes herself as an environmentalist with firsthand knowledge about the potential to jump-start the local economy while safeguarding the environment through the establishment of clean energy jobs.

“I dare to believe in a government that cares for all its people equally, is responsive to them and their concerns,” she says on her campaign website. “An American future that values equality for its people that opens doors of opportunity for all. An America that leads by example through its laws and practices to ensure the dignity, well-being, and freedom of all people.”

Gershon wastes no time in his personal bio on his campaign website declaring he’s a businessman, and not a career politician, having spent more than 25 years

in commercial real estate finance. The firsttime runner for office says his decision to leave the private sector and seek political office is a byproduct of outrage at the state of politics in Washington, D.C. He points to his entrepreneurial spirit and ability to build consensus among diverse parties as evidence of his qualifications to represent NY1.

“I’m fed up,” he says on his campaign website as to why he’s running. “It’s time Long Island had a strong voice to fight for high-paying jobs, affordable health care, high-quality education and clean air and water. Rather than stand by as Donald Trump and Washington politicians try to divide us, we can rebuild the middle class.”

Gershon and his wife Lisa have two sons and live on the South Fork.

David Pechefsky

Pechefsky has extensive experience in government despite never holding elected office. The 1986 valedictorian at PatchogueMedford High School has held various positions in government and politics during the last 20 years, including as a longtime staffer for the New York City Council, as well as a consultant for the National Democratic Institute from 2010-13. There, he worked to establish a legislative budget office to serve the Congress of Liberia. He also managed a U.S. government-funded program to strengthen the parliament of Somalia.

He’s on leave from his current job as a senior adviser with Generation Citizen, a nonprofit with the goal of fostering civic engagement.

“I am running for Congress because we need to put in place policies that make our economy work for everyone, not just the wealthy,” he says on his website. “I’ve spent my career working in government here in America and as an adviser to governments around the world and know how government can and should work to make things better for all us.”

Vivian Viloria-Fisher

Viloria-Fisher was also a Suffolk County legislator, serving the 5th District 13 years beginning in 1999. She was born in the Dominican Republic before moving to New York with her family as a child. She also worked as a Spanish teacher in Three Village school district for 12 years.

“As your representative, I will: fight for a national living wage; support job growth in sustainable energy and medical research industries; reinstate tax deductions for workers and students,” she says on her website, among other legislative priorities.

She touts her work on expanding public transportation services, creating a Welfare-to-Work commission in the county and her support for marriage equality prior to its legalization in New York among her proudest accomplishments.

Superstorm Sandy task force looks to remedy, repair Though it’s been more than five years since Hurricane Sandy ravaged Long Island, many people, including Huntington Station resident Sheryl Cohn, are still feeling its effects like the storm only happened yesterday.

In an interview after the April 11 public hearing at Stony Brook University conducted by the Suffolk County Legislature’s Superstorm Sandy Review Task Force, Cohn said her roof was ruined in the wake of the storm, and her house is falling apart around her. The ceiling in her guest bedroom fell and crashed onto the bed, and black mold has sprouted in many rooms around her house. The masonry on the outside of her home — finished only a few months before Sandy hit — fell to pieces on her driveway. She lives in fear that a piece of ceiling will fall on her head while she sits or sleeps.

“My grandson, he turned five in March, he has never been here,” Cohn said. “I would never be able to forgive myself if, God forbid, he contracted something or a piece of sheetrock fell on his head. It makes me feel horrible. He lives a half an hour away, and he’s never been to Nana’s house.”

She first looked into a contractor to fix her roof, but the firm she hired disappeared with all of the money she had already given them. She said the NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program, the state program that was created to provide aid to people whose homes were damaged during the storm, has constantly told her wrong information and switched caseworkers with her multiple times. Now she says they have stopped returning her calls and emails.

Five and a half years later she still has no progress on acquiring any financial aid.

As some of the effects of Sandy linger on, Legislator DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville), the Legislature’s presiding officer, helped to create the Superstorm Sandy Review Task Force, a 27-member committee of government representatives, scientists, engineers and other experts to make recommendations on how to deal with the lasting effects

The task force is divided into four working groups including emergency response, resiliency, recovery and infrastructure.

“As we go and narrow down the issues they want to focus on, we want to look at what went wrong, what are the recommendations, what are the solutions,” said Joshua Slaughter, Gregory’s aide. “We don’t want to reinvent the wheel, but we want to come out with things to make it better.”

The task force plans to have more meetings and come up with a document by December that will provide recommendations for the county.

While much of the focus of the task force is focused on the South Shore, where the damage was much more severe, problems from the North Shore not only deal with damaged property but the severe risk of beach erosion and property loss for people living close to the shore.

Professor of oceanography at Stony Brook University and task force member Malcolm Bowman said there is not enough solid data to say that “storm of the century” Sandy won’t be repeated in the near future and that rising sea levels will make each new storm do more damage.

“Five, 10, 25 years from now it will take less of a storm to do the same amount of damage,” Bowman said. “That is the challenge that we have to think about and be prepared for.”

There are both natural solutions and engineered solutions up in the air for trying to fix Long Island’s receding beachline, according to Bowman. Natural solutions

include planting seagrass and reestablishing oyster beds to hold the land in place, while engineering solutions include barriers and other human-made structures. Bowman said that both will come into play when preparing for upcoming storms.

Regarding aiding those who are still affected by Sandy navigate their recovery, Slaughter said the task force was thinking about recovery advocates, somebody who can be hired by the state to work with people on a consistent basis.

“I know it will be difficult, there are a lot of cases, but if you leave it to that one on one, people will be running forever, and

not every consumer can get out as well as others,” Slaughter said.

“The vast, vast majority of our contractors did the best to their ability, but of course the ones we hear about are those who put people in a bad position or were unscrupulous,” chair of the task force Dave Calone said. “Our job as a governmental entity is to make recommendations to limit that as much as possible.”

Another task force meeting took place April 18 at the Southampton Town Hall.

Two more meetings are scheduled for April 26 at Patchogue-Medford High School and May 2 at Babylon Town Hall.

Redirecting energy toward overdoses Anger, while a strong motivating force, can too often cloud thoughtful deliberation. When that emotion is consistently fueled by an energized, supportive media, crucial facts become ignored. The result is one’s ability to prioritize critical information and make good decisions based on solid evidence is compromised.

Sadly, that has become the case with the roiling debate over the Second Amendment. Lost in the noble call to stop killers with guns is data showing accidental drug overdoses are deadlier than gun homicides, especially in Suffolk County.

Analysis of FBI stats shows there were about 11,000 gunrelated homicides in 2016. The semiautomatic AR-15 rifle was considered responsible for under 400 of those. Meanwhile, in the

same year, drug overdoses took the lives of well over 64,000 Americans, many of them school age. The probability of dying from an overdose is nearly six times greater than being shot to death.

For every one person murdered by someone using an AR-15 almost 185 die from drugs.

The percentages are far more dramatic here in Suffolk County.

According to then Police Commissioner Tim Sini, there were 34 homicides in 2016. State records show 13 of them were “firearm related.” During the same year 360 residents were lost to the drug epidemic. That ratio is almost 28 to 1.

It’s almost unimaginable that anyone reading this hasn’t been in some way touched by a friend, family member or neighbor whose been affected by this curse. How many of us have

been brokenhearted attending wakes and funerals of those suddenly, shockingly, inexplicably taken? Yet even as this deadly scourge has swallowed our area like no other in New York State, it’s disappointing local activists “marching for our lives” haven’t loudly proclaimed reducing accidental OD fatalities to be part of their life-saving mission. While it would be sensational to prevent the one person a month from being shot to death in Suffolk, it would save a whole lot more lives if we could reduce by half the one person a day killed by a drug overdose. Redirecting some of the aforementioned emotion and properly recalibrating priorities accordingly might be a worthy place to start.

Don’t dilute the party Zeldin votes against working families When it comes to having options to choose from, sometimes less is more.

As of April 12, the Democratic nominees to run against 1st Congressional District U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) have dwindled down to five from seven. While it’s nice to see new and old faces throwing their hats into the political ring — for which we wholeheartedly commend them — a five-way race in the Democratic primary could create a situation in which voters are overloaded with information and less prepared to cast the vote that makes the most sense for them and the district as a whole come November.

With some signs of internal fighting going on between the candidates already, it’s not a leap to think the longer five people are alive in the race the muddier the ideologies of the party locally will get, similarly to the way the 2016 presidential primary featuring Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont) and Hillary Clinton played out, but moreso.

Condensing the nominees would show unification within the party and a clearer focus come Election Day, which regardless of party should be a priority for voters on both sides seeking relevant personal representation in the federal government.

While we understand following the November 2016 election of President Donald Trump (R) and locally with Zeldin that those on the other side are vocal and motivated, it would be a mistake to allow infighting to harm the eventual primary winner’s chances in the general. If those running can engage in substantive policy discussions about how they differ and how they are the same, an admittedly near-impossible task with five candidates, ultimate party unification and digestible information for those heading to the polls would likely be the byproduct, and that is a good thing for everyone in New York’s 1st Congressional District, party be damned. If Democrats cannot find a way to do this, it will be to their ultimate detriment, as they can rest assured the Republican party will undoubtedly rally behind its candidate well before November.

On April 12, Congressman Lee Zeldin voted for the so-called balanced budget amendment, a bill that sought to make massive cuts to Medicare, federal student loans and agriculture subsidies.

The bill failed to pass the House, largely on party lines. But the cruelty of trying to balance a budget by gutting the social safety net cannot be ignored, particularly after a Republican tax cut for the wealthiest Americans, that added over $1 trillion to our nation’s debt, was passed just months ago.

This vote against working families is part of a larger pattern

in Lee Zeldin’s voting record. In 2017, he voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, even though the Ryan/Trump plan would cause 67,000 of his constituents to lose their health insurance.

Zeldin also voted for the so-called Financial Choice Act, which rolled back many of the Dodd-Frank protections, a slap in the face to the hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders hurt by the fiscal irresponsibility that led to the Great Recession. Additionally, Zeldin voted for the budget resolution that paved the way for the Republican tax cut that will cause Long Islanders to lose their state

and local tax deductions.

In reviewing Congressman Zeldin’s record, it is unclear who he is working for. Perhaps he’s doing the bidding of his wealthy donors, Robert and Rebekah Mercer. Perhaps he is angling for a job in the revolving door of the chaotic Trump administration.

Whatever his intent, it’s clear that Lee Zeldin is not working for the constituents of this district. I look forward to getting out to vote for his opponent and repealing and replacing Congressman Lee Zeldin Nov. 6.

He also congratulates him on his nondemocratic election.

Putin must have something on the Donald, sexual or economic, due to Trump’s desire to have a Trump Tower placed next to the Kremlin. The Donald denies any collusion with the Russians or having any help in his upset victory in the 2016 election. He asks [Jeff] Sessions, our attorney general, to protect him, and when he asked FBI head [Jim] Comey to give a break to his future national security adviser,

Comey refused and then he was fired. Our president doesn’t listen to his lawyers and advisers but seems to follow the views of Fox News. I wonder who will protect Americans, our present democracy and great nation against Donald Trump.

P.S. We do not have to make America great again or send troops to the Mexican border.

She sounded thrilled and anxious. She is, as I’ve known for years, incredibly organized and efficient. She has been a standout in her job for several years.

“What’s the concern?” I asked.

As my children take one standardized test after another, I thought perhaps I would share a test-format version of what to expect when you’re expecting.

Trading a ball for a bat, the lefty led off the bottom of the fourth with a double, knocking the ball into the outfield on a bad bounce, and two more hits eventually scored what would be the game-winning run in a 2-1 Patriots victory over Patchogue-Medford April 17.

Nielsen, who added 11 strikeouts from the mound during a complete game while allowing just three hits and one walk, said he knew he’d won the game once he crossed home plate.

“I knew that was going to be the run that’d win it for us,” the southpaw said. “Because I knew I wasn’t going to give up another run.”

The junior allowed hits in the first and second and hit a batter in the second before a Patchogue-Medford bunt loaded the bases.

He struck out the following hitter but allowed the only run later in the same inning. He surrendered his only walk in the top of the fourth, but struck out two to get back on track.

“I always try to give my team the best opportunity to win,” Nielsen said. “I wanted to get ahead with the fastball, because once I get ahead I can start going through my other pitches and making it harder on the hitters. I had a rough second inning, but my defense got me out of it.”

Logan Doran and Kyle Rafferty each went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Doran scored the Patriots’ only other run, and his brother Brady Doran also went 2-for-3. While the brothers said Ward Melville was slow to start, the

Patriots are now firing on all cylinders, feeling in their element.

“I wanted to attack the fastball, and he had a pretty good curveball,” junior second baseman Brady Doran said of PatchogueMedford’s pitcher. “I’m comfortable, stay confident and try to attack the fastball and hit it hard. We gel — we’re a close team that really plays well together.”

Nielsen shared a similar sentiment, but said the funny feelings from the team’s uneven start are gone now.

“I can’t think of a weakness,” he said. “Our defense is great, I know all of the pitchers on staff are going to give us a great game and we hit.”

Head coach Lou Petrucci said he thought his southpaw controlled the game, and said he liked that he stayed under 100 pitches.

Petrucci said the Raiders’ record didn’t fool him (2-7), because he knew he’d be facing a challenging opponent.

“Randall [Alejo] pitched a great game and we got away with a win today,” he said. “It’s a big rivalry game. We tried to have good at bats, put good swings on the ball, we didn’t strike out much and the kids are showing great improvement. Our pitching staff is keeping the scores down, and now we’re working on getting he clutch hits, but we’re playing hard.”

The Patriots have won five straight as of press time to tie with Sachem East (7-2) at the No. 2 spot in League I behind Longwood (8-1). Ward Melville traveled to Pat-Med for Game 2 of the series but results were not available by press time. Ward Melville will stay on the road for Game 3 with a 4:15 p.m. start time on Apr. 19.

State anglers rally against sea bass quota cuts

After learning the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission decided it would cut New York’s sea bass allocation quota by 12 percent while increasing that of neighboring states, small business owners and local fisherman joined forces with politicians to make a plea in Patchogue.

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) was with state Assemblyman Dean Murray (REast Patchogue) April 9 at Mascot Dock to take what they called an aggressive stand against an unfair decision, saying the cut is coming even though black sea bass stock has rebounded — currently 240 percent

greater than target biomass, or the volume of organisms in a given area. By issuing its own set of regulations for black sea bass fishing this season and entering into noncompliance, the state can take a stand against what many are saying is an inequitable decision that could further harm New York’s already struggling anglers. “Going into noncompliance is never the first option, but it may be the only one in taking a stand for New York anglers who year after year continue to get screwed,” Zeldin said. “With the vast majority of Long Island fishing taking place in waters shared with New Jersey and Connecticut — the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound — it is unfair that New York anglers are, once again, being penalized with smaller fishing quotas.”

He pointed to the fact that two boats fishing could be sitting next to each other with one allowed to catch up to double the amount of the other.

“The hardworking recreational fishing community is rallied together in an attempt to keep New York anglers on par with its neighboring states,” said Huntington captain James Schneider.

“The sea bass stocks are extremely healthy. This is a valuable resource for all the citizens to utilize, just like the corn in Iowa and oil in Alaska.”

Long Island’s largest one-day fishing event also took place at St. Joseph’s College the same day in Patchogue, bringing together fishermen and stakeholders of Long Island’s maritime economy from across the Island.

New York State plans to sue the federal government if it loses an appeal against the restrictions on recreational fishery for black sea bass, state officials have said.
