When it comes to aiding community members, the Setauket Fire Department goes beyond the call of duty. The department added drug overdose reversal kits with Naloxone nasal syringes to their vehicles recently, and trained their crews to administer it.

Naloxone, also known as Narcan, enables one to revive a person who is experiencing an opiate drug overdose. Opiates include drugs such as heroin and even prescribed medications like fentanyl and oxycodone. Each kit contains two pre-filled syringes (with no needles) that can save two people, as well as a medication atomization device that goes on the end of the syringe to make it a nasal spray.

Drug overdose, especially from heroin, is something many of the crew members have encountered during their courses of duty and everyday lives, according to Captain Tim Devine. He said he considers the addition of these kits and the preparing of the firefighters equivalent to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillator training.

“It’s just another thing in our arsenal to help the people in our community,” the captain said.

He explained Narcan interferes with the receptors of the body, and allows the person to begin breathing again normally and neutralizes the narcotic for a short time period. It also provides rescue workers enough time to get the victim to the hospital.

The number of calls received regarding opiate overdosing has risen substantially in the department in recent years. Devine estimates that they receive at least two a month.

“The incidents of overdoses are out of control in Suffolk County, and it doesn’t matter what neighborhood or area you live in, it’s just an epidemic,” he said.

While the department’s emergency medical technician workers are already trained, the addition of trained firefighters is expected to help.

“The least we can do is give people a fighting chance if they overdose,” Devine said.

He also said he hopes in the near future they can organize a program for family members, to train them in the use of the kits as well.

At an April 5 training, EMS Lieutenant Jay Gardiner led the class. Gardiner, a retired associate professor at Suffolk County Community College, provided an overview of what the kit contains as well as the signs of overdosing, which include slowed and/or shallow breath, a heavy head nod, bilateral constrictive pu-

While the kits can help reverse drug overdoses in two people, Gardiner said if there are more than two victims, half a dose may be given. The full dose can last for about 15 to 20 minutes so he stressed the importance of the patient being transported to the emergency room as soon as possible.

“It’s like CPR. It’s something that you need to save lives and that’s what we do,” Gardiner said.

Reflecting on the rise of opioid use in the community after training, Gardiner said he knows there is only so much they can do.

“It’s not going to go away but we can mitigate some of the damage,” he said.

He said he believes the investment in buying the kits and training the fire department members is a wise one, because saving lives is the payback when it comes to purchasing any equipment.

“When all is said and done, if we save one life, then all this training and preparation is worth it,” he said.

Gardiner, like Devine, hopes to extend the training to family members of the volunteers or even to the community. He said if someone close to a victim is trained, it could mean the difference of life or death.

“We would like nothing better than to transport a live patient to the hospital,” he said.

First Lieutenant Scott Teer knows the importance of training classes such as these. A few months after taking part in a community training program for administrating Narcan, organized by Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), the firefighter and his wife witnessed a man carrying a girl to a car.

When his wife went over to see what happened, they discovered the young woman had overdosed and was starting to turn blue.

The couple called 911, and Teer grabbed a Narcan kit from his car. He said after giving the girl a dose, she regained consciousness.

“It’s a great feeling to know that you were able to help someone with some training that you took part of. It paid off,” Teer said.

The firefighter highly recommends the training in the drug overdose reversal kit for everyone.

“Unfortunately this is a problem, and the more people that we can have trained the better the chance of saving someone,” Teer said.

Three Village adopts $204.4 million school budget

Three Village students in grades 7-9 will soon receive notebook computers for use in school and at home.

April 5 the Three Village Board of Education adopted a $204.4 million budget for the upcoming school year.

With a 3.4 percent cap on the tax levy increase, the 2017-18 budget includes new programs, new positions and continued upgrades and repairs to district properties. The budget update was given by Jeffrey Carlson, assistant superintendent for business services, at the last school board meeting.

The governor’s proposed increase in state aid to the district was $247,000, though it could be a little higher in the finalized budget, Carlson said. Also, he said, retirement costs are down by $1.6 million. The good news is that the district won’t be making any cuts to stay within the cap.

A signature addition to the academic offerings is the new, district-run, free pre-K for four-year-olds. It will replace the current fee-based program offered through a partnership with SCOPE Education Services at Nassakeag Elementary School. The pre-K will run morning and afternoon sessions — each two and a half hours — for children who turn four

by December 1, 2017.

Three elementary teaching positions that would have been eliminated, due to declining enrollment, will be reassigned to the pre-K. The district has room in the budget to hire two more teachers if enrollment goes much above the 105 students who have already signed up for the program, Carlson said. The estimated salary and benefits for each position are about $100,000 — a total of $300,000 for three teachers and $500,000 for five teachers. With the current enrollment, this breaks down to roughly .15 percent of the budget, or $20 per household, Carlson said. The program will be capped at 200 students.

In addition to the possible pre-K positions, the district will add another 2.2 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions at the elementary level. Two positions will be added to special education for increased individualized education programs (IEPs), as well as .1 FTEs to both health and physical education.

Though fourth grade chorus will be a new program next year, it won’t require additional staffing, Carlson said.

Program enhancements at the secondary level include ninth grade band and orchestra every day, an expansion of the high school writing center, and the addition of junior high math centers. There will also be new electives. Carlson also said that there will be a 1.15 FTE increase in staffing at the secondary level.

Positions new to the district are a drug and alcohol counselor and a supervisor of technology and information systems to help oversee the phasing-in of a one-to-one device program in grades 7-9. During her presentation on the district’s use of its Smart Schools Bond allocation, executive director of technology Kerrin Welch-Pollera said that students in those grades would get notebook computers to use in school and at home.

Two FTEs will be added to the district’s maintenance and operations teams as well. The district’s capital projects, or improvements to the school’s buildings and facilities, include the installation of generators at all of the elementary schools.

The district also plans to make exterior building repairs at P.J. Gelinas Junior High, renovate the fields at Ward Melville and Gelinas, and complete interior repairs at Ward Melville. The district will also work on plumbing, bathroom repairs and renovations throughout the district, Carlson said. Capital projects are excluded from the cap and are reimbursed by the state at a rate of 66 percent, Carlson said.

The district’s allocation of the Smart Schools Bond, to be directed toward enhancements in security, technology and in preschool classrooms, is $3.39 million. Welch-Pollera said that last year, during the first phase of upgrades, the district spent $1.1 million on network and firewall upgrades.

The second phase will include purchasing the devices for the one-to-one program and replacing ceiling projectors in junior high classrooms with interactive ones similar to smart boards. The total cost of the second phase is a little over $1 million and includes the $79,164 the district must allot to private schools in the Three Village area.

The budget vote will take place on May 16 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the three secondary schools. Residents zoned for Arrowhead, Minnesauke and Nassakeag elementary schools will vote at Ward Melville, while residents zoned for Setauket Elementary will vote at Gelinas. W.S. Mount-zoned residents will vote at R.C. Murphy Junior High.

At a NYPA conference held in Saratoga Springs, it was announced that Desirée Keegan, managing editor, sports editor, and editor of both Village Beacon Record and Times of Middle Country, won third place for sports writer of the year for her coverage of local high school and college teams. “Excellent all-around portfolio of work,” the judges wrote. “Detailed stories, smart choices for story subjects.” She finished third in 2013, and took first place in the 2015 standings.

Keegan also finished second in her division for a sports feature story on former Stony Brook University men’s basketball star Jameel Warney, who is now on the Texas Legends team as an affiliate player of the Dallas Mavericks.

“Rich quotes from a variety of sources,” the judges said of the piece.

Victoria Espinoza, editor of The Times of Huntington and Northport and the Times of Smithtown, came in second place in the best feature story category for her division.

“History and romance, a great combination for reporting,” a judge said, on her story about 16th century love letters exchanged between a couple in Huntington. A girl was forced to break up with the man, who in turn committed suicide.

Alex Petroski, editor of The Port Times Record, won third place for best feature story in his division for a story judges described as “well crafted and well paced.”

The piece involved local Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner (CRocky Point), who donated a kidney to a childhood friend.

Michael Tessler, Times Beacon Record director of media productions, won first places in his division for both best online dynamic ad and innovative ad project, which was centered around Culper Spy Day. A judge lauded him for a “perfect choice of transition element and timing to music.”

Tessler also received an honorable mention in the best advertising campaign category.

Beth Heller Mason, art and production director, received an honorable mention in the best small space ad category, which judges called “fun and refreshing.”

Freelancer Bill Landon received an honorable mention in his sports feature photo of the Kings Park girls’ volleyball team celebrating the Kingsmen’s sixth straight Suffolk County championship title win.

Wendy Mercier won first place for best special section cover for TBR’s 2016 Resolutions edition of Lifestyle magazine, which judges said is “eye-catching and invites the reader to pick up the magazine.” The company also earned second place for best advertising campaign for a “farm market” series, and an honorable mention in the special sections/ niche publications category.

A 20-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station was driving on Old Town Road in Port Jefferson Station and rear-ended another car waiting at a red light at the intersection of Terryville Road at about 8:30 p.m. April 5, according to police. The man fled the scene without exchanging information and two of the passengers of the car he hit were transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. All too often substance abuse addictions can go undetected. Therefore, it is imperative that we as a community know the signs and symptoms to look for, as well as the resources available, including those like the Bates House that exist within the borders of our school district.

The district looks forward to working with them in the future, especially as we plan for the introduction of a substance abuse counselor in the fall. It is our hope that through this new position and this community partnership we will be able to provide strong and much-needed support for those families affected by this

Obituaries Stephanie Costanzo

Stephanie Costanzo, 73 years old, of Port Jefferson, died Feb. 18.

She was born Nov. 4, 1943, in Queens; daughter of Stephen and Frances Kostecki.

Stephanie was a prolific artist in many different mediums and enjoyed sharing her talent by teaching, entering art shows, and giving sifts of her beautiful work. She was also an active community member, leading public library workshops, ballroom dance classes and participating in the local garden club, yoga and a variety of other community activities. Stephanie’s family and heritage were some of her great passions.

Her enthusiastic personality, healthy lifestyle, positive outlook on everything in lif and her tireless energy will be missed by all of her friends and family.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Lucio; sister, Dorothy; sons, Sergio, Gavin and Lance; daughter, Stacia; grandchildren, Amber Skye, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Kazimierz, Maksymillian, Natalia and Gabriel, along with many other family and friends.

Services were held at House of Judah, Sayville March 12. Interment followed in the St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.

James B. Sheridan

Dr. James B. Sheridan, 86 years old, from Ridge (formerly of Miller Place) died March 3.

Born May 11, 1930, to the late Hugh and Johanna Sheridan in Queens.

He was the beloved husband of Dorothy for 42 years; devoted father of Maureen (Steven McAllister) and James (Cassie); cherished grandfather of Liam and Elliot McAllister; dear brother-inlaw of Denise DeJong (Fred dec); predeceased by granddaughter Lily Madeline Allister; and eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Brothers of Brooklyn, Jim devoted his career to education as a teacher at Bishop Ford High School, an administrator at St. Francis College and a guidance counselor at Smithtown school district and Shoreham Wading River High School. He was also a dedicated musician, serving the community as organist and music director at St. Louis de Monfort Church in Sound Beach and St. James Church in Setauket.

Services were held at St. James R.C. Church March 7. Interment followed at the St. James Churchyard Cemetery.

Joseph (Joey) B. Tesoriero of Port Jefferson died suddenly March 26 at the age of 29. He was born Jan. 11, 1988, in Port Jefferson.

Left to cherish Joey’s memory are his parents Joe and Grace; sister Kristen; brother-inlaw Connor; and their children Gracie, Jacob and Nathyn; loving grandparents Frances, Joan and Hans; his uncle Paul and many other family and friends. He will be missed by all who shared his life and love.

He was the recipient of many sports awards including first place in New York State shot put competition. He holds the Earl L. Vandermeulen shot put school record at 55’-9.75 (see Port Times Record article 3/9/06) as well as all league, all division and all county. He placed two years in a row in the Junior Olympics. He played offense and defense each game for his high school football team and at junior varsity age he played varsity.

Interment was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Port Jefferson.

She was also the adored sister of Virginia Scali (Louis) and the late Constance Mullen.

R.C. Murphy Junior High science bowl teams compete regionally R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s two science bowl teams recently competed at the regional competition at Brookhaven National Lab and showcased their science knowledge during the challenging contest.

Throughout the event, the teams earned high praise for their sportsmanship and talent. The school’s first team won four out of six matches before succumbing to a challenging team from William Floyd. The

second team won one match but suffered tough losses during the other matches.

The annual competition provides students with the opportunity to challenge themselves and to learn to work as a team.

Each team member has to dedicate him or herself to learning as much as possible about one specific area such as biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, general science and math.

Patriots pull through with bounce-back victory

By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tBrnewspapers.com Ward Melville’s boys’ lacrosse team suffered a stinging defeat to end their seasonopening four-game winning streak against rival Chaminade April 8, dropping the tough nonleague battle 7-5.

“We didn’t play as best as we could against Chaminade,” senior attack Jack Purdy said, adding that despite the Patriots’ 9-5 bounceback win over West Islip April 10, to increase the team’s League I win streak to five, more work still needs to be done. “We’re still trying to look for the best game possible. We’re still looking to fire on all cylinders on defense, offense and faceoffs.”

In the first half of the win over West Islip, junior attack Matt Grillo had his fingerprints all over the game. He scored the first goal of the game, assisted senior midfielder Eddie Munoz on the next, and found the back of the cage off a feed from sophomore attack Dylan Pallonetti later.

“We prepared by watching film on West Islip and looking for their plays and certain techniques they use on the field, and how to counter those techniques,” Munoz said of his team’s readiness. “But it was so close in the first half.”

West Islip came back to tie it, 3-3, but Grillo scored an unassisted goal for a hat trick with three seconds left in the first half.

“I think both of our faceoff guys did very well and so did our goalie,” Munoz said. “I think as a whole we played for each other and gave great effort.”

Ward Melville came out firing from the opening minutes of the second half, and at the 10:51 mark, a Perry Cassidy save, one of the senior’s 10 for the game, sparked junior midfielder Zach Hobbes’ unassisted goal. He bulled his way up the middle between two defenders to the front of the cage to extend the lead. Minutes later, Pallonetti scooped up a Grillo rebound and gave his team a 6-3 advantage. Cassidy ended the quarter with a save to preserve the third-quarter shutout.

“It felt good to dominate a little bit,” Munoz said of the second half.

Senior midfielder Dominic Pryor was next to get on the scoreboard. Catching West Islip off guard, he saw the open lane, and instead of passing, made his way toward the cage and fired away.

“It was great to seal the win in the second half against a team that’s more than capable of coming back when they are down,” Pryor said. “My team was able to focus on possessions in the second half,

and overall playing team offense and defense, not relying on any individual. The chemistry this team has is very special and I think that will continue and grow throughout the year.”

Purdy had a hand on the next two goals, assisting Pallonetti, who had an open look after Purdy skipped passing to the middleman.

“I knew he was open,” Purdy said of Pallonetti. “He did a good job of reading the defense and getting in the right position. I gave it to him, and he took a good shot to the top left.”

Despite West Islip finally breaking through in the second half, with back-toback goals with four minutes remaining, Purdy helped stabilize the game. He passed from behind the cage to Munoz at the front

of the net for the final goal of the game.

“Eddie Munoz made a good shot right in front of the crease that saved me,” Purdy said.

“It wasn’t the best pass, but a good goal.”

The senior attack said he hopes his team can continue to work on coming out strong, to be able to keep a new streak running through the remainder of the season.

“We need to step it up a little bit in the first half,” Purdy said. “We let up a few goals that we shouldn’t have, and we need to hold onto the ball better on offense, move it around and get better shots. We try to get out and score, put a bunch of goals in, dodge hard and look for the open seams in the defense. Coach said when we play to our best abilities we can win any given game on the schedule.”

The two-day event was full of lectures from leaders and innovators in our field, and we left feeling reinvigorated as we headed back to our Setauket newsroom.

One of the lectures, called “Community 360,” focused on throwing out the playbook for covering community news and figuring out how to best cover the changing and diverse areas we live in with new technology.

The lecture was quite an eye-opener for us and made the editorial staff self-evaluate the level of coverage we’re providing to our readers.

So this is where you come in. If you think there is an area, an issue, an event or a group we’re not covering sufficiently enough — or even at all — we want you to reach out to us. In the March 23 edition of The Village Times Herald, in a classic example of the liberal penchant for selective outrage, Arnold Wishnia professes to be horrified

by Kellyanne Conway’s reference to a massacre at Bowling Green, Kentucky, and to President Trump’s claim that millions of Hillary Clinton’s supporters were likely to have been ineligible to vote.

Although a less zealous observer might have characterized these statements as a simple mistake and an undocumented estimate regarding the election, Professor Wishnia uncharitably chose to classify them as “lying” and “threatening to our democratic process.”

It is true that a terrorist massacre did not take place in Bowling Green. However, it is also true that two active terrorists were arrested there, and Ms. Conway later stated that she misspoke and meant to refer to “Bowling Green terrorists,” rather than a “Bowling Green Massacre.” To me, this seems about as serious a gaffe as President Obama’s statement during his 2008 campaign that he had visited 57 states so far, and had only one left to go.

With regard to the precise enumeration of the illegal Democrat voters, including dead people and those registered in more than one state, we can probably agree that the exact number will

Whether this number is in the millions, or thousands, or hundreds (and we acknowledge Professor Wishnia as a recognized authority in the field of orders of magnitude), questioning the accuracy of President Trump’s estimate seems to be basically a smoke screen designed to mask the real problem.

It is generally accepted as a real fact (and not an alternative fact) that President Kennedy’s victory over Richard Nixon in 1960 would not have happened without the participation of multitudinous undocumented (a

current synonym for illegal) voters from Chicago and Texas, thereby demonstrating for all to see the prowess of the Democrat party in the field of voter fraud.

If Professor Wishnia, or anyone else, would like to see a truly egregious example of a president willfully lying to the American people, he need look no further than President Trump’s immediate predecessor, who told us numerous times, with a straight face, that his Affordable Care Act would cut the annual cost of an average family’s premiums by $2,500. This was a bald-faced lie, and President Obama knew it when he said it.

With regard to statements made by his surrogates, there can be no finer example of planned mendacity than the statements made by former United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice, who told the American people that the terrorist attack on our diplomatic mission in Benghazi, in which four Americans were killed, was prompted by a “heinous and offensive video,” when they both knew that this was not true.

These outrageous lies elicited not so much as a peep from our liberal friends, and the statements made by President Trump and Kellyanne Conway were not even in the same ballpark.

Setting the record straight?

In the March 16 edition of The Village Times Herald, a writer felt the need to pick apart my “leftist” ideas with such inconceivable disrespect I chuckled to myself as I read his retort. It was the same chuckling I do when I watch his apparent choice for president during his diatribes, only less scary, because it had no effect on the world as a whole.

This writer felt it was appropriate to use my last name to start every one of his monotonous statements, much like the president uses the same verbiage to speak of world leaders (the names he can pronounce) who want nothing to do with him. That is, of course, unless it’s his best pal Vlad Putin.

The writer also spewed such strong vitriol over my left-leaning defense of the First Amendment it was almost as though he was speaking through Trump himself.

Let’s be clear, though, I am certainly set straight now, as I am sure most non-supporters are.

I must be crazy for not believing in 24 million people losing health care or taking funding from programs pertaining to arts and sciences or secret alliances with Russia. What was I thinking not being of the same mind as someone whose lies are so obvious that Paul Ryan took a moment away from working out to support the fact that there is no evidence behind the “wiretapping” claims?

And immigration, well I certainly thank the writer on that lesson.

Who knew during all of those years that I taught history that it was only a small group of Europeans that made this country what it is? The incredible advances made by immigrants of Asian descent that have brought this country to the upper echelon in medicine,

technology, science, literature, etc. must not count for much. Of course in a Trump world, these subjects are moot points since they are only supported by “leftists” who believe in progress and humanity, not just money and narcissistic world dominance.

Thank you writer, for putting my mind at ease and showing me the light. The mockery of our Constitution on a daily basis is nothing to be concerned with. The “wall” on the southern border, I can’t wait to pay for that. Education and class equality be darned; we’re making America great again.

The future is incredibly bright in a Trump future and he’s already campaigning for a second term before his first 100 days have even been served. It is truly something to look forward to.

hen I was in college, I wrote an essay in a seminar. In such a small class, we read everyone else’s writings each week and needed to be prepared to share our observations or else face the ignominy of our teacher either excusing us from the room or glaring at us until we cracked.

One of the other writers had written this spectacular story about four people at a dinner party. She had moved the reader through the thoughts of each of the characters, until she got to the fourth person, whose social anxiety receded when he started choking. him until he read her vexed expression and retreated to the kitchen. Separated from the group, he choked to death.

The ending was so powerful that I was sure my prose was inferior.

When my turn came, I waited through the usual polite beginning, as my classmates shared what they thought worked. Great, I thought, it won’t take long before we transition to the unnerving category of “what could he have done better.”

It took some time before people starting quibbling with my choice of words. Certainly, I could maneuver through the minor discomfort of a new word here or a different turn of phrase there.

Professor Brilliance sat in his green corduroy pants, with his oversized left foot rising and falling diagonally above his right knee to his rhythm, tilting his head to the side, awaiting a worthy insight.

“Well,” he said, scanning the room slowly, “has anyone spotted clichés?”

Oh no! Clichés? Clichés! I thought I had scrubbed out the clichés. I

quickly scanned words that floated unevenly above the page, hoping to find any and expose them before anyone else did.

His foot stopped, and so did my breathing.

“No,” he nodded slowly, “I didn’t see any, either.”

This had to be only a temporary respite before the scissors started slicing.

“Now, let’s go over the introduction to this fine piece,” he said.

Was that sarcasm? Did he mean that it was fine, or was he acknowledging its shortcomings?

As we went line by line through the piece, my writing held up to the scrutiny. Some of my classmates even defended a few phrases, suggesting that they found them perfectly fine just as they were.

The professor saved his lone arrow for his final remark.

“This is a solid piece of writing,” he said, before adding, “for someone your age.”

And there it was, ladies and gentlemen. The backhanded compliment

that sent me back to the children’s table, wondering what the adults might be discussing.

Now that I’m older than Professor Brilliance was when he shared that line, I have considered whether he had a point and the answer is, yes and no.

My experiences have changed my perspective. I recognize the value of history, even if I despised memorizing dates and names for a test. I also understand the Chinese devotion to their elders, not because I’m older, but because I have an increasing appreciation for all the decisions my parents and their generation made.

At the same time, when I hear the ideas my children share, I don’t minimize them in the context of their shorter lives. Instead, I recognize the wisdom that comes from their experiences in a handheld techno world they maneuver through more deftly than I. All these years later, I guess I’d have a comeback to my professor’s observation. “Maybe you’re right,” I’d say, “or, maybe, I’m young enough to know better.”
