The quickest growing segment of the oral cancer population is young, healthy, nonsmokers, according to Stony Brook Medicine.

Commonly associated with tobacco use, oral cancer can strike anyone.

In younger populations the incidence of this form of cancer is on the rise in part due to exposure to the human papillomavirus.

This is why oral cancer screening is important for all adults.

In support of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine will host free oral cancer screenings Monday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in

the front of Stony Brook University Hospital.

Oral cancer screening takes 10 minutes or less. At the Stony Brook event, screenings will be performed in the school’s Mobile Dental Clinic by oral health practitioners. A noninvasive technology, called the VELscope, a light technology to screen suspicious lesions, will be used during the screenings.

Oral cancer is not a rare disease, with nearly 50,000 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. There is an 80 percent survival rate when oral cancer is detected early, according to Stony Brook Medicine.

Opioid prevention scholarship More people died from an opioid overdose in Nassau and Suffolk counties in 2017 than ever before, contributing to the nationwide opioid issue. Old Field justice race to be rerun after hostile tie

The Old Field village justice election between incumbent Ron LaVita, who has run unopposed for two decades, and attorney Ted Rosenberg, ended in a 114-114 tie March 20 after all the votes, including absentee ballots, were counted. A recount confirmed the vote totals and a runoff election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 3.

Rosenberg, the village’s current associate justice and a partner with Rosenberg & Gluck LLP, said he was surprised when he learned the news. LaVita, a general practice attorney, said he was disappointed when he heard the results.

“I thought I would have a commanding lead,” he said, adding he should have notified residents who were unable to vote March 20 to submit absentee ballots while he was campaigning, feeling that would have helped him take the election.

Things became heated between the two candidates before the March 20 election for the unpaid position when Rosenberg alleged during his campaign that LaVita did not have a certificate of occupancy for his home since making renovations 15 years ago. After submitting a Freedom of Information Act request with the village, it was confirmed by The Village Times Herald

In a letter he handed out to residents, LaVita addressed the allegations saying he was ignorant in dealing with a rogue contractor who he said did not complete the renovation and failed to file the proper paperwork. In spring 2017, LaVita said he paid the requested permit fees in anticipation of obtaining a CO. In July of that year, he was granted an extension, which expires in July of this year.

In the letter to residents and an ad in The Village Times Herald, LaVita said despite

doing his best to follow the canons of judicial ethics, he felt he needed to address allegations and provide further information about his opponent. He alleged Rosenberg represented an accident client who sued the Village of Old Field and a constable, and hosted a campaign fundraiser, which violates judicial ethics; and that the village treasurer works for Rosenberg’s law office.

Rosenberg confirmed he represented a client against Old Field and said he checked with the mayor first, who said there was no conflict of interest created

for taking on the case. As for the alleged fundraiser, the attorney said it was a meet and greet his wife arranged, and there was no admission charged.

Rosenberg said he looks forward to a runoff election, and added he had hoped this time around there would be a meet the candidates night or debate so Old Field residents could learn more about the candidates. At press time, there was no debate scheduled, but Old Field residents can meet Rosenberg at The Setauket Neighborhood House at 95 Main St., April 2, at 7 p.m. to learn more about him.

LaVita has not scheduled any sort of debate or meetings.

“I think it’s an opportunity for the voters of the village to gain more knowledge about the candidates and our qualifications,” Rosenberg said in regard to a debate. “Particularly for me, because I’m not the incumbent.”

During the March 20 election, Michael Levine, who has been mayor of Old Field since 2008, ran unopposed and maintains his seat. Bruce Feller and Tom Pirro are the village’s new trustees. Feller and Pirro ran for two seats on the village board after Timothy Hopkins and Robert Whitcomb decided not to run for re-election.

The village justice runoff election will be held April 3 at the Keeper’s Cottage at 207 Old Field Road. The polls will be open from noon to 9 p.m. Absentee ballots will be reaccepted and must be at Village Hall no later than 9 p.m. April 3.

PJ chamber, restaurants host first breakfast crawl

Port Jefferson turned breakfast into a special occasion over the weekend.

Sponsored by the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and Pro-Port Jefferson Association, an organization that works on behalf of the food service industry in the village, the first-ever Walkabout Spring Breakfast Crawl was a success on a number of levels. Fifteen establishments participated in the crawl March 24, offering special breakfast items and standing-room access during the three-hour event.

Initially 200 tickets were made available for the event, but they sold out so quickly it was opened up to 100 more guests, according to chamber director of operations Barbara Ransome. She called the event super and very well attended and added if the restaurants are interested, they would bring it back again next year and would likely offer more tickets.

“There was this camaraderie and fellowship among the different groups waving to each other and using their maps,” Ransome said. “I don’t think there was anybody disappointed.”

Tickets were sold for three different tiers, a $20 ticket that allowed access

to six of the participating stops, $30 for nine stops or $40 for access to all 15. The funds raised will go to Pro-Port Jefferson Association likely to be used for marketing, according to Ransome, except for a $500 donation being given to Port Jeff-based Welcome Friends Soup Kitchen.

“The event went very well,” doughnut shop East Main & Main owners Lisa Harris and Robert Strehle said in an email.

“We would definitely be interested in participating again.”

Some of the offerings included chorizo hash at Barito Tacos & Cocktails, French toast skillets and Bloody Marys at Brewology 295, triple crème-filled croissants and mimosas at C’est Cheese and many more.

Ransome said she heard feedback from some attendees who enjoyed being able to participate on what is essentially “offhours” for the various restaurants, thus not having to compete with typical restaurant business crowds or battle for parking.

Initially planned as a standing-room event, Ransome said many of the restaurants had space to allow sit-down meals, and that aspect might be revisited in future years.She also said she’s working on an analysis of which attendees patronized which restaurants based on their ticket choice to help improve future incarnations.

Kramer said Berlinda, who will turn 17 April 13, loves learning, and despite attending school for only one year, easily solved basic arithmetic problems when he first met her.

“She never lost that bright smile and willingness to work with whatever she had,” Kramer said, adding that sometimes those with handicaps in her village are shunned and even her siblings have bullied her.

When Kramer first approached Carrion, the doctor informed him that he would also need to get the hospital to donate some of the costs for the November surgery. It was then Kramer reached out to Department of Medicine’s Dr. L. Reuven Pasternak, who serves as vice president for health systems and chief executive officer of Stony Brook University Hospital. Pasternak said requests like Kramer’s to waive charges are not unusual

from doctors and members of the community.

“We do this from time to time, and the way it usually occurs is that a physician encounters somebody, oftentimes overseas, and in the course of doing a medical mission or in their travels,” Pasternak said. “And it’s somebody who has a correctable medical condition that will make a huge impact on their lives.”

While Pasternak was out of town during the surgery and hasn’t met Berlinda yet, he said Kramer and Carrion have kept him informed about her recovery and follow-up treatment.

“It’s a testimony to cooperation and collaboration because it required a lot of people to step up and say that this is important to do and basically volunteer to do it,” he said.

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini (D) announced the arrest of a Brooklyn man March 27 who allegedly scammed approximately 30 businesses in Suffolk County into paying for fake fire extinguisher inspections.

“This individual was preying on small business owners who were trying to do the right thing and protect the safety of their employees,” Sini said. “This is not just a matter of bringing a scam artist to justice; it is a matter of ensuring that our small businesses are safe and in compliance with fire safety laws.”

Michael Castellano, 51, of Brooklyn, was arraigned in Suffolk County Court on charges of a first-degree scheme to defraud, a class-E felony; first-degree falsifying business records, a class-E felony; and petit larceny, a class-A misdemeanor. Bail was set at $5,000 cash or $20,000 bond.

Castellano allegedly fraudulently collected money from business owners for fire extinguisher inspections and falsified certificates of inspection under the business name Liberty Fire Extinguisher Sales Co. from as early as August 2017. He allegedly

charged businesses $20 per fire extinguisher and replaced the inspection tags without servicing the equipment. He allegedly collected approximately $1,050 from businesses located across Suffolk County.

Castellano targeted small businesses owned by immigrants, according to the DA’s office, many of whom speak English as a second language. The case is being investigated by the district attorney’s office with assistance from the Suffolk County Fire Marshal’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Kevin Ward of the Enhanced Prosecution Bureau.

Incidents and arrests March 20–25 7-Eleven robberies

Suffolk County police arrested a Farmingville man for allegedly robbing a Farmingville convenience store twice during the past three months. Deshawn Martin allegedly entered 7-Eleven, located at 358 Mooney Pond Road, and robbed an employee at gunpoint at 12:08 a.m. March 20, according to police.

Sixth Precinct officers located Martin a short time later on Route 25, near South Coleman Road, in Centereach. Further investigation by Major Case Unit detectives determined Martin also allegedly robbed the location Jan. 1 at approximately 6:45 a.m. Martin, 21, was charged with two counts of firstdegree robbery and resisting arrest. He was arraigned March 20 at 1st District Court in Central Islip.

Stony Brook murder-suicide

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a murder-suicide that occurred at a Stony Brook home March 25. Sixth Precinct officers were called to Pembrook Drive after a family member of the residents called 911 to report the discovery of two deceased adults at the location.

Following an investigation, it was determined Raymond Foster, 79, shot his wife, Sandra, 78, and then shot himself, according to Suffolk County police. The two were pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

OBITUARIES Barry Joseph McManus

Barry Joseph McManus, a former Three Village Central School District assistant superintendent, died March 19.

Barry was born Sept. 3, 1930, in Astoria, Queens, to Margaret and William A. McManus Jr. He attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn, Fordham University for his undergraduate degree and Columbia University for his master’s degree in education. He was in the Coast Guard during the Korean War and was stationed in the South Pacific on Ichi Binari Island.

He was discharged Nov. 9, 1953.

He and Heather were married April 2, 1966, and remained happily married until the day he died. Soon after they married they moved to Brazil where he was a principal of the American School in São Paulo, and she was a kindergarten teacher. In addition to becoming new parents to Meegan while in Brazil, they enjoyed exploring South America and brought back several exotic animals as “souvenirs.”

They returned to the States and lived on Sunset Drive in Endwell, which could have been a theme song for their lives. They lived in Endwell for five years and added to their family with their second daughter, Marni, and although they were only there a short

They moved to Setauket in 1974 and have remained in the area ever since. Their son, Barry, was born the following year and their family was complete.

Barry’s priorities were always his family, his faith and his friends. With a keen sense of humor and an inclination for dramatic humor he kept everyone laughing around him. The McManus’ hosted many parties at their house on Strong’s Neck over the years — pig roasts, birthday parties, family reunions, post wedding and funeral parties — and a good time was always had by all.

He had a strong faith and lived a Christian life every day. Going to church on Sunday was a ritual Barry enjoyed, and no matter if the family was away skiing, driving cross country or traveling abroad, a church would be found and Mass would be a part of every weekend.

Barry was assistant superintendent of the Three Village school district for instructional services until his retirement in 1992. He was passionate about education and worked with the highest level of integrity and energy on behalf of the students for over 20 years with the district earning a Blue Ribbon School status during his tenure.

His children learned from his example of how to be a loving spouse, an engaged parent and an active positive member of the community. Volunteering was part of his DNA and he continued to be an active volunteer until his death.

He leaves behind his best friend and wife of 52 years, Heather Huested McManus; his adoring children Marni McManus (Brian

Nicole Meek

Nicole G. Meek, age 92, of Sevierville, Tennessee, and formerly of Wilton, Connecticut, died March 3. She was a frequent visitor to the Three Village area.

Nicole was born in St. Quentin, France, in 1925. She met Robert Meek, of Silvermine, Connecticut, in 1945 in Paris, France, while Robert was in the U.S. Army. Robert and Nicole married in 1947 in Paris and came to live in Silvermine.

She was an active volunteer at Norwalk Hospital and Family & Children’s Agency, where she served on the board of the Minks to Sinks Charity Sale for 50 years. She moved along with her son, Dr. Allen Meek, to Sevierville in 2012.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert and parents Georges and Madeleine Gibert.

She is survived by her son Allen; daughters Kathleen LaCour and Anne Hicks; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister Janine Gerard.

Three Village Community Trust unveils new projects New ventures by some Setauket residents will make the area look a little different in the coming years.

The Three Village Community Trust announced plans to clean up Patriots Hollow State Forest and acquire the historic Timothy Smith House.

Patriots Hollow State Forest

The woods that run along Route 25A, across from Setauket’s Stop & Shop, have been the site of many downed trees over the years. The trust announced at its annual meeting March 14 that plans are in the works to clean up the woods and add a trail so people can walk through the forest, something that cannot easily be done in the property’s current state.

Setauket resident and former teacher Leonard Carolan said he walked into the woods one day and was disappointed to see how messy it was, not just because of the trees but the infestation of invasive plants.

He approached the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Three

The home known locally as the “house on the hill” was purchased by Robert de Zafra in 2012. Up until his death last October, de Zafra, the trust’s co-founder, was restoring the home that sits on 2.6 acres.

Trustee Robert Reuter reported that de Zafra’s widow, Julie, offered the house to the trust for a nominal price and will donate funds to help with continued restoration. The trust will also create the Robert de Zafra Conservation and Preservation Fund to preserve

the house and other community landmarks.

Englebright said the house represents an important part of history in Setauket. The Smiths were among a group from Southold who settled Setauket in 1655 and created Brookhaven town. A clerk once worked out of the home, and it was considered Brookhaven’s town hall for decades. Englebright said de Zafra went to great lengths to ensure the house was protected and preserved, even using his own resources.

“It’s appropriate, I think, for the community trust — which he is a founding trustee of — to carry forward his legacy as well as the legacies of all the others who lived in the house preceding his acquisition of it,” Englebright said.

Village Community Trust President Cynthia Barnes and state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) to discuss working together to clean up the former farmland.

Those conversations led to the trust signing a stewardship agreement with the DEC. Carolan, the chair of the new stewardship, will steer a committee of 16 people, which will assess the forest’s conditions and seek the community’s input to develop a restoration plan, according to Carolan. He said after gathering wants of the community and addressing concerns, the next step would be to clear 100 feet into the woods and turn to experts to identify the plants and figure out which need to be dug up or trimmed back.

“We want to work it where we have enough clearing that we can plant native trees — the white oaks, the red maples, the black tupelos — and make that into a more native natural forest with a greater variety of trees and habitat,” Carolan said.

The trust also plans to build a split-rail fence with downed locust trees along the 25A side of the property. The committee chair said the work will take years to complete, and the community trust will spearhead fundraising campaigns in the future to fund the project.

Barnes said the trust is excited to join forces with the DEC and to work with Carolan.

“This former farmland in the heart of the Setauket community, devastated by neglect and storms over the years, is in dire need of attention,” Barnes said.

Englebright said he was happy to hear the trust and DEC are working together on cleaning up the forest, which he considers an important part of the local landscape.

He said it should be accessible to the public, especially for educational purposes.

“I would like to see the community take emotional ownership of the property,” the assemblyman said. “The way you do that is make it accessible. The way you develop good stewardship is have people who are

Child Victims Act advocates rally at Flanagan’s home

BY SARA-MEGAN WALSH SARA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Roughly a dozen protesters marched up and down Cayuga Avenue in East Northport Friday morning greeting residents as they headed to work with chants of “hey hey, ho ho, predators have got to go.”

The New Yorkers Against Hidden Predators, a coalition of child sex abuse survivors, advocates, and advocacy organizations, stood outside state Sen. John Flanagan’s (R) home to protest his opposition to the Child Victims Act March 23.

They carried signs reading “Stop protecting predators & start protecting kids” as well as blown up copies of the New York Daily News front cover “Protectors of the Predators” with Flanagan’s photo.

The rally’s aim was to push the senate majority leader to use his position among Republicans to negotiate approval of the legislation that would open up the state’s statute of limitations of child-sex abuse crimes.

“I think that the power and energy of the ‘Me Too’ movement has really opened people’s eyes,” said Kathryn Robb, a Manhasset resident and child sexual abuse survivor. “We’re saying enough is enough, time is up. The laws in New York need to change. They are archaic and protect the predators, not victims.”

The Child Victims Act, if passed, would extend the time that child-sex abuse victims have to file a lawsuit from age 23 to age 28 in criminal cases, and up to age 50 in civil cases.

In addition, the passage of the bill would open up a oneyear period where survivors could file claims previously not permitted under the current law.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) included the Child Victims Act in his 2018 executive budget for the first time, after the bill was passed by the state Assembly in 2017. The March 23 rally coincides with the last weekend of negotiations before the April 1 deadline to approve the state budget.

The act has been blocked by the Senate Republicans numerous times during the past 14 years, according to Marci Hamilton, a founding member of the New Yorkers Against Hidden Predators and CEO of CHILD USA, a nonprofit think tank that seeks to end child abuse and neglect through evidence-based research.

“We are out here to tell Senator Flanagan it’s time to finally put this bill to rest and pass it,” Hamilton said. “He has personally refused to meet with us.”

Flanagan and his press office did not respond to requests for comments on the March 23 protests.

In a pre-Election Day 2016 sit down with TBR News Media and his then-Democratic challenger Peter Magistrale, Flanagan addressed the Child Victims Act and statutes of limitation.

“We have statutes of limitations for very cogent reasons and no matter how emotional a subject may be, witness availability, evidence, all those things have a salutary effect in terms of what happens,” he said.

Hamilton said the protest group has plans this afternoon to meet with state Sen. Elaine Phillips (R-Flower Hill) in her office to discuss her position on the Child Victims Act and attempt to negotiate her support of the bill’s passage.

‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH’: North Shore’s Taking the lead of demonstrations started by people barely old enough to drive during the days of the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement, North Shore students marched Saturday. Their messages were clear in their rhetoric delivered over a sound system from the bed of a pickup truck and on homemade signs: lives lost to gun violence are no longer acceptable, especially in schools, and politicians who do not agree are going to have organized and audible opposition.

A local incarnation of the March for Our Lives, a movement started by survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that left 17 people dead in Parkland, Florida, Feb. 14, took place at the intersection of Routes 347 and 112 in Port Jefferson Station March 24. While thousands stomped through Washington, D.C., and countless other areas across the globe, several hundred gathered locally, thanks to the organizing efforts of students from Miller Place, Port Jefferson, Ward Melville and other area high schools, to call on politicians to take action to prevent gun violence in schools and communities.

Activist organizations such as the North Country Peace Group, Long Island Rising, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Building Bridges in Brookhaven assisted the high schoolers in setting up the demonstration.

Calls for legislative action in speeches and on signs ranged from all-encompassing bans of “assault style” weapons seen abroad, like in Australia; to the more incremental policy changes being discussed in state houses and on the federal level, such as raising the minimum age to purchase firearms from 18 to 21; to bans on modifiers that make semiautomatic weapons function like automatic weapons; stronger background checks; and longer waiting periods for purchases.

“We are infused with a passion for change — change that we hope will drain the stagnant pool of corruption in our nation,” Miller Place High School student Jake Angelo said to the crowd. “We are the hope for our country’s future — the generation of awareness, the generation of calling ‘B.S.’ and the generation of change.”

Nearly all of the student speakers directed their remarks at 1st Congressional District U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) and the National Rifle Association, the powerful lobbying arm whose political contributions are often criticized as the deterrent to advancing gun legislation by those who lean to the political left. Zeldin received nearly $10,000 in campaign contributions from the NRA during his reelection campaign in 2016, according to campaign finance watchdog OpenSecrets.org.

“Change does not happen when the leaders deem it so,” Ward Melville High School student Scott Egnor said. “Change happens when every day folks say that enough is enough. Change happens when every day folks draw the line. Change happens when we vote Lee Zeldin out. We will take this movement, by Americans, for Americans, and we will bring it to the doors of the capital. We will not stop until Congress is more afraid of our voice than the NRA checkbooks.”

A spokeswoman for Zeldin, Katie Vincentz, said in an email the congressman has and will continue to meet with those on both sides of the gun control debate, when asked if he planned to meet with any of the NY-1 students behind the Port Jeff Station march. She said Zeldin supports banning bump stocks, fixing the National Criminal Instant Background Check System and “ensuring lunatics manifesting violent criminal intentions to murder with firearms have access to none,” among other changes widely regarded as incremental gun control steps. She did not say whether or not he would support a ban on assault-style weapons when asked.

“The more people of all ages participating the better,” Vincentz said when asked how Zeldin viewed the activism of students in his district and beyond.

A speaker who identified herself as Ariana, a sophomore at Longwood High School, also invoked Zeldin during her remarks.

“Why should 15 year olds have to discuss the possibility of dying at the hands of a mass shooter?” she said. “Why should we be discussing dying in school, a place where we’re supposed to be safe and protected? And what can we expect from politicians like Lee Zeldin? Apparently only prayers and condolences. Congress is not taking the necessary steps to keep students like me and my friends safe — or the 5 year olds in kindergarten, or the 11 year olds in middle school. That’s why we are here. We cannot wait for the adults in Congress to continue to let the call the shots — Jake Angelo NRA when it comes to our safety. These politicians are not listening to us because we are supposedly too young to know what’s good for us, but apparently their silence is what’s best. Or perhaps the issue here is special interests and the money they receive is more important to them than our lives.”

To see them take that initiative and stand up, I feel like I did a good job. I’m very proud of them today.”

She called sending a student off to high school in today’s world “terrifying.”

“They had a lockdown drill last week,” she said. “We got an email from the superintendent in the morning letting us know that there will be an unannounced lockdown drill today, and they came home from school and told me they were in the choir room when it happened, in a room that doesn’t have a lock on the [glass] door, and they said, ‘We were sitting ducks if this was real.’ There were 150 kids in this room and they said, ‘There’s nowhere safe for us to hide.’”

Amanda DeJesus, an undergraduate student at the Stony Brook School of Social Welfare, was one of the organizers of a March for Our Lives rally at SBU. The event started at 11 a.m. March 24 and many of the approximately 300 people who attended the university rally went to Port Jefferson Station afterward to take part in that protest.

“As a social welfare student, promoting social justice is the cornerstone of our profession,” DeJesus said. “I believe that demanding common-sense gun laws is a first step in creating a safer society for everyone, so that is why I wanted Stony Brook University to become a part in this very important conversation.”

Alli Ross, from Port Jefferson Station, attended the SBU rally with her fiancé.

She said it was the first march she ever attended, and she was amazed every time she looked back and saw more people joining in. While she doesn’t have children yet, she said she has younger sisters and cousins, and ensuring children’s safety is important to her.

“This is just something that really hits hard for me ... as it does with a lot of others,” Ross said. “Just being a part of something like that, and everyone coming together and showing that this is

The trio said they were inspired by the solidarity they felt from seeing so many of their peers in attendance. The students helped establish a station in the high school that will remain open at which their peers can get assistance in writing letters to elected representatives.

Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) and state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) were also among the attendees.

“It is amazing to see the passion, the dedication, the commitment of these students — no fear,” Hahn said.

“It is wonderful. They are focused, they are determined, they are smart and they’re getting things done already. And we need to follow their lead.”

SBU community joins movement

A smaller group of counter-protesters stood across the street on Route 347 holding signs in support of the Second Amendment, with several Suffolk County Police Department officers and their cars positioned on the median to separate the two groups, though no violence and minimal interaction occurred.

A package of gun control bills passed the New York State Assembly in March and will require passage by the Republicanmajority state Senate before becoming law.

All of the students asked said they intend to vote in the next election, or the first one after their 18th birthday. Organizers from the various activist groups had a table set up during the march to help register attendees to vote.

Courtney Kidd, an adjunct professor at the university, spoke at the event and said she was honored when the studentorganizers invited her. She said she first thought of declining and suggesting a speaker who would be an expert on gun violence, but then she remembered when she was a student hearing the saying: “One voice can make a difference; I am one voice.”

“I realized that this march is about more than rehearing the statistics that you already know, and instead about making change,” Kidd said at the rally.

“It’s not about their voice — it’s about yours. So, if I can help you realize that you don’t always need the years and the title, that we need your voice, then I may be able to say I made a difference.”

DeJesus said she hopes the young people will continue voicing their concerns.

“I believe that we will be able to see change if we continue speaking about it,” DeJesus said. “We must keep the conversation going, never forget all the lives lost due to gun violence, continue walking out and don’t let anyone silence us.”

She said it’s vital to get out and vote.

“The midterm elections are so important and not enough people, especially young people, are registered,” DeJesus said. “The best way to make your voices heard is to vote. You never know if your vote will be the one that makes a difference.”

OBITUARY Colleagues remember mathematician Ronald Douglas

Mathematician Ronald Douglas, a former vice provost of Stony Brook University, and former executive vice president and provost of Texas A&M University, died Feb. 27, at the age of 79.

Douglas was an esteemed researcher and scholar in the areas of operator algebras and operator theory. Born in 1938 in Osgood, Indiana, Douglas earned his doctorate in mathematics at Louisiana State University in 1962. He was a professor of mathematics at the University of Michigan until 1969, when he moved to Stony Brook University. There he carried out groundbreaking research, and served in administrative positions, rising to vice provost for undergraduate studies from 1990 through 1995.

Robert Lazarsfeld, chairman of the Department of Mathematics at SBU, said Douglas was a mathematician of the first rank. “[He] was recruited to Stony Brook in 1969 just as the mathematics department was beginning its rise to prominence,” Lazarsfeld said. “In addition to his many scientific contributions, he served as chair of the department from 1971 to 1973 and 1981 to 1984. Ron’s leadership was instrumental in advancing the stature of the department.”

Douglas became dean of physical sciences in 1986, and vice provost in 1990 before moving to Texas A&M in 1996, where he served as executive vice president and provost until 2002. He was appointed as a distinguished professor of mathematics at Texas A&M in 1999 and remained active in research and graduate student mentorship until the time of his death. He also held visiting professor positions in Sweden, Israel, England and Australia.

Texas A&M President Emeritus Ray Bowen, a professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, hired Douglas during his eightyear tenure as president. He said Douglas came to the university as an internationally known mathematician with a history of major accomplishments in the areas of operator theory and operator algebras.

“Within a short time, Ron established himself as an academic leader for Texas A&M who always displayed integrity, respect for teaching and scholarship, and kindness toward everyone,” Bowen said. “He was fearless in his passion for the students and faculty of Texas A&M.” Bowen said Douglas’ accomplishments at Texas A&M included the university’s admission into the Association of American Universities being aided by having an academic leader of Douglas’ eminence as provost. He also credited the university’s authorization to have a Phi Beta Kappa chapter to Douglas’ ability to manage the rigorous evaluation process used by that organization, and his leadership that created the Blinn Team Program, which is an innovative and unique way to encourage transfer students. Bowen said Douglas made decisions that led to the subsequent creation of Texas A&M Qatar.

“I think it should be evident to all that Texas A&M University is stronger today because of the efforts of Ron Douglas during his years as our provost,” Bowen said.

Beyond his considerable academic and administration acumen, Douglas also was active on the national education policy and reform scene. He is considered the father of what came to be known as the calculus reform movement during the late 1980s. As chairman of the Department of Mathematics at SBU, he had begun researching methods to change the way calculus was taught, given that as many as 40 percent of undergraduates taking introductory calculus at the time were failing it. In addition to organizing the Calculus for a New Century meeting held in Washington D.C., in 1987, Douglas served on a number of committees whose aim was to make calculus more relevant — particularly for nonmathematics majors — by creating introductory calculus courses more in line with the students’ needs. He also published a series of articles on mathematical education and its relationship to science education as a whole.

“One of my favorite recollections of Ron concerns his generosity, service, and

Ronald Douglas curiosity,” said Irwin Kra, distinguished service professor emeritus and former chairman of the Department of Mathematics at SBU. “During the 1980s, calculus reform was a hot topic. I was asked by the American Mathematical Society to organize and moderate a panel discussion on the subject. Just before the date of the panel discussion, I had a personal emergency that prevented me from attending the meeting during which the special session would take place. On very short notice, I asked Ron whether he could replace me as moderator.

He not only accepted, but very shortly became an expert and leading authority on calculus reform.”

Douglas was honored in 2012 as an inaugural fellow of the American Mathematical Society. His son Michael, a noted string theorist now at SBU, was also named an inaugural fellow; the two were the only father-son pair at the time. Douglas was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1989) as well as a Guggenheim Fellow (1980-1981), a Sloan Fellow (19681974) and a National Research Council Fellow at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study (1965-1966). He also was an invited speaker at the International wCongress of Mathematicians 1978 in Hel-

sinki, a coveted honor at the most prestigious venue in mathematics that is reserved for the top 5 percent of mathematicians worldwide.

Douglas’ research, which focused primarily on operator theory and both Banach and C* algebras, was revolutionary, as evidenced by the fact that it was consistently funded by the National Science Foundation and other entities for more than five decades. One of his major contributions to mathematics is the BDF theory of C* algebra extensions, named in tribute to Lawrence Brown, Douglas and Peter Fillmore, the researchers who developed it. In addition to solving the long-standing problem of classifying essentially normal operators, the BDF theory also spawned one of its own — a new K-homology theory that solved an open problem of Michael Atiyah and became a cornerstone of a new mathematical area called noncommutative geometry. Beyond BDF theory, two other influential theories bear Douglas’ name: Douglas algebra and Cowen-Douglas operators.

Douglas’ books — including “Banach Algebra Techniques in Operator Theory” in the series Graduate Texts in Mathematics, which is considered one of the classics in operator theory — also helped to define new paradigms in the field.

In December 2014, the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M honored Douglas by establishing the R.G. Douglas Lectures, which each year bring distinguished mathematicians to campus who work in areas similar to those pioneered by Douglas.

Douglas is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Bunny; their children Michael, Kevin, Kristin, Kim and Tana; his sister Marilyn; his first wife, Nancy; his nephews, Steve and Tim; and his grandchildren, Adrian, Alec, Laura, Saba and Nicolas.

Funeral services were held March 3 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bryan, Texas, and March 12 at the Setauket Presbyterian Church.

Senior Chris Buehler and junior Max Nielsen are being added to Lou Petrucci’s pitching prospect pack after strong first starts to the season.

Buehler notched six strikeouts over four hitless innings in the Patriots’ 5-0 season-opening win over William Floyd Colonials March 26. Ethan Farino went two innings and Drake Eggleston pitched one in the combined one-hit shutout.

“We’re just a bunch of guys that are all one big family — we’re all brothers,” said Buehler, a lefty who’s committed to Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus.

“We’ve been working hard in the offseason. I think we’ll be pretty good this year.”

Nielsen secured his first “W” of the year in Ward Melville’s 6-1 home victory against Patchogue-Medford Raiders the next day.

“We just have to get the bats going this season, we’ve got to hit the ball because there’s a lot of great teams in our division,” said University of Connecticut-bound Nielsen.

“Pat-Med always gives us a great series.”

Nielsen’s got the pitching and the hitting taken care of. The junior lefty had a two-run single in the top of the sixth in-

ning to give Ward Melville a 3-0 lead over William Floyd. Senior shortstop Logan Doran had an RBI-single in the seventh inning of that game. He and his brother Brady hit doubles in the Patchogue-Medford win.

“We’re ready,” said Logan Doran, who noted it was a bit challenging getting ready for the season indoors. “Our pitching is still dominant across the Island, but our hitting has stepped up. [We’re starting] the season with the mindset that anybody can beat us, taking nothing for granted.”

Senior center fielder Trevor Cronin said his team will continue to capitalize on two of its strengths.

“We have a size advantage,” the captain said. “But our pitching [is great], especially with guys that work this hard.”

Buehler said the Patriots have a target on their back, but said his team feeds off of that.

“We just have to limit the mistakes — limit the errors — limit [our] strikeouts and we have to score runs,” Buehler said.

“Our biggest challenge this year is putting some runs together, but if we play small ball, I think we can win some games.”

He said he sees Sachem East being one of Ward Melville’s biggest threats. After hosting Longwood April 2 at 10 a.m. and Brentwood April 3 at 2 p.m., the Patriots will be put to the test. They’ll face the Flaming Arrows on the road April 5 at 10 a.m.

“I think they’ve done a great job in their offseason workouts, especially this winter,” Petrucci said. “When the kids look up to Steven Matz, Anthony Kay and [most recently, Ben Brown] — they’ve all been an inspiration to all of us — the pitching staff has taken on a whole new dimension here at Ward Melville.”

Keep the wheels in motion The 1980s rock band White Lion said it best when they sang: “When the children cry let them know we tried, ’cause when the children sing then the new world begins.”

Children across the country ensured their cries were heard March 24 when millions of them took to the streets to call for implementation of stricter gun control laws as part of hundreds of March for Our Lives rallies. Now we have a challenge for them and the parents and grandparents who joined them — keep the momentum.

The rallies were inspired by the battle cries of students who survived the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. For centuries, protesting has been a popular way to get politicians to pay attention, but those rallying calls need to be followed by action in order to get things done. We surmise many if not most of the student marchers understand this is just beginning, like Avalon Fenster, one of the organizers of the March 24 rally in Huntington.

“In the long term, we want to get youth more civically involved, collaborating with elected officials to create legislation that makes our lives a priority,” Fenster said.

It’s something Port Jefferson High School students Ben Zaltsman, Matt Pifko and Gavin Barrett also get. These students helped establish a station in their high school where their peers can get assistance in writing letters to their representatives. Letter writing, emailing and calling the offices of elected officials is a vital process to let legislators know what their constituents want and need.

However, writing to a congressman is not the end of the line either if true change is the students’ goal. All the letters and phone calls in the world mean nothing if a person isn’t registered to vote.

The March for Our Lives website, www.marchforourlives.com, has set up a form to make it easier for voters to register. It’s a rite of passage and a civic responsibility when a teen turns 18. High school students who are heading off to college in the fall need to also familiarize themselves and their peers with the process of obtaining and submitting an absentee ballot. If you are registered to vote in Setauket but go to school at SUNY Cortland, unless you’re driving home on the morning of Nov. 6, an absentee ballot is your only option.

Simply showing up to fill out a ballot is not enough either. People of all ages need to ask themselves what matters most to them, and then see how their representatives in the U. S. Senate, House of Representatives and state positions vote on issues.

There’s one more step 18-year-old marchers need to keep on the table as well. If you feel you and your community are not being represented effectively by those in power, consider running for office, or at least help those who represent your interests get elected. That’s what 24-year-old Josh Lafazan did last November, and he became Nassau County’s youngest legislator. For a few political offices — including New York State senator and assemblyperson — the minimum age requirement is 18 years old. To serve in the federal government, you must be at least 25 years old.

Leslie Gibson, a Republican candidate for the Maine House of Representatives, is a living embodiment of what is possible. He recently dropped out of his race after receiving criticism for remarks he made on Twitter about Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students, including calling Emma Gonzalez, who has been in the forefront of the movement, a “skinhead lesbian.” He had been running unopposed, but after he made the comment, challengers sprung up from both parties, including a 28-year-old Democrat who had never considered seeking political office before.

We’ve heard the children’s cries. Now the real work begins.

Group doesn’t represent everyone in 3V Everyone is aware of the ongoing mass murders in our country. Everyone is aware that we are a semi-divided nation on how to deal with gun control, laws and safety. Each state, county, community and city, sadly, have their own ways of handling these issues. We do not have conformity on the gun issue in this country.

I would like to make our community aware that there is a local group that has formed in the wake of the latest mass shooting. They call themselves 3V Concerned Parents and Neighbors, and you can find them on Facebook. I had the experience of hearing one of the founders speak at the last board of education meeting. This group is vehement about having armed guards and teachers — if that’s what it takes they say.

I am just as vehement about not arming anyone in our schools.

What I am for is open, honest, fact-based civil discussions to hear each other’s side on how to keep our schools and nation

safe. Speakers at the BOE who presented their opposition on arming guards stated facts and, yes, their heartfelt beliefs and concerns. The speakers who want guns in our schools stated the issue “you need a good guy with a gun” theory, and they, too, had heartfelt statements, and here are a few of those statements.

One of the founding members of 3V Concerned Parents said she has instructed her children, during an active shooting to “pull a bleeding dying body on top of you and play dead.” A father said he would have brought his gun to the meeting, but he knows guns are not allowed in schools. You can go to the district website for the audio of their exact words.

You can also go to the 3VCP Facebook page and see what these parents are posting. When I spent an hour or so perusing it, I did not find any other offered solutions, no fact-based entries, lots of Fox News postings and pure vitriol and extremely poor grammar. This Facebook page

posted a Newsday article of a mother in Rocky Point who wants to sue the district for suspending her child for walking out during the day of protest. They called her a moron and an idiot. The other founding member of this group went on to say horrendous things about Rocky Point and Mastic, which I cannot and will not print.

But I will apologize to these communities for this embarrassing behavior by a small group in our community. I wish I could say that I’m making this up.

My concern is this: With them labeling themselves “Three Village parents,” other new families and the surrounding communities that they have been so slanderous about, will think they speak for our community. I feel, they absolutely do not. I encourage everyone to make their concerns about arming our schools known to the administration.

As mentioned, an open civil dialogue is needed.

Deadly multilevel mistakes in Florida In 2013, Nikolas Cruz’s home county of Broward, Florida, concluding there were too many arrests of minority high schoolers, basically decriminalized behaviors that previously would have gone on the public record and allowed minor infractions to be handled by the school system.

Arrests were soon down an utterly miraculous 66 percent.

That same year, Cruz had 26 disciplinary incidents at Westglades Middle School. In January 2013, a Broward County sheriff came to his home after Lynda Cruz reported she was assaulted for taking away Nikolas’ Xbox.

Mental health clinicians advised against him being held under the Baker Act (involuntary institutionalization and examination).

Early in 2014, Nikolas transferred to Cross Creek School for students with emotional or behavioral problems. Psychiatric and other clinical services were offered on campus.

On Feb. 5, 2016, less than one month after enrolling at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the Broward County sheriff received a report

saying Cruz posted an Instagram photo of himself with guns and planned to shoot up the school. The sheriff’s office forwarded the information to the school’s resource officer.

In September of 2016, a school resource officer reported a peer counselor told him Cruz tried to commit suicide by cutting himself and ingesting gasoline, while saying he wanted to buy a gun. Once again, a mental health clinician saw no need to hold Nikolas under the Baker Act. Eight hours later, a sheriff’s deputy responded to Cruz’s home on reports Cruz was hurting himself and talking about buying a gun. Soon after, the Florida Department of Children and Families opened a case on Nikolas, calling him “a vulnerable adult due to mental illness.” They reported Cruz said he plans to buy a gun, but “it is unknown what he is buying the gun for.” On Nov. 12, 2016, the Florida Department of Children and Families says his “final level of risk is low.”

On Jan. 19, 2017, Cruz got reported for an assault, carrying bullets in his backpack and was

expelled from school. On Feb. 8, 2017, Cruz enrolled in an alternative, off-campus learning program, buying an AR-15 three days later.

In September of 2017 he boasts: “I’m going to be a professional school shooter.” and is interviewed by two FBI agents. Two months later a caller tells the sheriff’s office Cruz could become a school shooter. A deputy refers the call to the Palm Beach sheriff’s office.

They claim they’d never received that threat.

On Jan. 5, the FBI received a tip from “a person close to Nikolas Cruz.” According to an FBI statement, the caller reported concerns about Cruz’s “gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting.” The agency ignores the warning.

Feb. 14, Cruz tucked an AR-15 his duffle bag, walked right into the school from which he’d been expelled and murdered 17 defenseless innocents — while a sheriff’s deputy remained outside.

Voting with our wallets against toxic messages

e’ve reached a period of outrageous outrageousness.

Or maybe extremes of extremism.

I read recently about an advertisement by a beer company that seems overtly racist.

Now, I’m not going to name the company because that might accomplish what it could have been attempting in the first place, which is to get its brand name in front of people.

We live in a world of such polarization, so many shrill messages and

such a rapid news cycle that you almost have to be outrageous and ridiculous to get attention and to remain in the public’s eye for more than just a moment.

It’s not an unprecedented phenomenon. Borrowing from the fictional world, poor Roxie Hart from the show “Chicago” is “the name on everyone’s lips,” as the song goes. But then, once the gripping trial ends, the newest crime of passion captivates the city’s attention, relegating Roxie to a less prominent place in the dramas of the Windy City.

In our real world, which sometimes seems to require a reality check, people doubt everything. Why, just the other year, the current president questioned the national origin of the previous one.

Doubt and cynicism are all by-products of a shrill time where people shout alternative facts from the rooftops.

And to bring matters up to speed, current politicians are questioning the motives of the Parkland shooting survivors. Some suggest

that left-leaning people who want to take away everyone’s guns are manipulating America’s youth. These students are not too young to die, but are somehow considered too young to have formed such an energized national movement.

Are people becoming more extreme with their time, with their emotions and with their donations?

Yes, without a doubt. As the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates suggested, “desperate times call for desperate measures.” He was describing the response to life-threatening diseases and not to people who feel their lives are threatened leaving their homes.

As Long Island native Billy Joel sang in 1989, “we didn’t start the fire.” While that’s true, and people have lived through periods of considerable instability and uncertainty, we are living in a time defined by extremes.

At some point, We the People have to decide what we can accept and what we can’t. That beer advertisement seems to be a cheap ploy put together by a cynical advertising

executive, who has now pulled the ad after it may have served its purpose.

Maybe this executive got his or her wish and more. Not only are people talking about it, but the company may also not have to pay as much for the ad, because now they’re not running it anymore.

How do we combat such unacceptable messages and decide when a company has crossed the red line?

One possible solution is to follow the example of the United States government. When other countries create intolerable situations for their citizens or our citizens or the world, we start by hitting these nations in their wallets and refuse to buy their products.

Maybe a decline in sales at a company would send the kind of message that defeats the notion that all press is good press. Other cynical executives might get the message if the stock price or sales fell after such an advertisement polluted the company’s image. With our consumer decisions, we can send messages that it’s not OK to be offensive and outrageous just to sell another product or a toxic idea.

We will have balloons and signage marking the way.

So what is Cooks, Books & Corks? It is to be a grand marriage of mind and body on a joyful June Tuesday evening, from 6 to 9 p.m., that will combine good food from local restaurants with good books by local authors, all of which will go down easily with some good wine. We are encouraging the restauranteurs to bring tastings of their favorite dishes and the authors to offer their books for sale throughout the event. Besides being just plain fun and a forum for our local restaurants, local wineries and celebrated authors, Cooks, Books & Corks is a fundraiser intended to pay for an intern from the Stony Brook University School of Journalism this summer. We have held such fundraisers for that purpose in the past, and the internships have helped launch several young journalists into their careers. Tickets will be $50 per person for the food and wine, and although not tax deductible, all funds will go toward paying the intern. The cost of any books you might choose to buy will be up to you. We hope there will be irresistible books for children offered for sale as well as for us adults.

Further, a ticket to Cooks, Books & Corks will enable the purchaser to have a reserved seat at the Stony Brook premiere of our film, “One Life to Give,” to be held on June 24, a

Sunday evening. The film is a prequel of sorts to the story of the Culper Spy Ring that played a vital role in the Revolutionary War. Headquartered in Setauket, Washington’s spies fed critical intelligence to the Patriots of such high value that, in one instance, information enabled French soldiers to disembark safely from their ships and join the fight in the colonies. The cable channel, AMC, ran popular stories of the spies, “Turn: Washington’s Spies,” for four seasons, which ended last year. Our full-length film, by contrast, endeavors to be historically authentic.
