Endowment continues a patron’s passion

By Donna newman When Helen Stein Shack passed away three years ago, her children wanted to celebrate their mother’s life with a legacy she’d have loved. Where to do it was an easy decision because Shack was both a bibliophile and a big fan of the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in Setauket.

Library Director Ted Gutman recalled how Shack’s children approached him to establish an endowment that would support an annual event in her memory each April. They only needed to decide what the event would be.

“They wanted to do something at the library specifically dealing with children and literature created expressly for young readers,” Gutman said. “Librarian Nanette Feder had a group of teenagers working with younger children. We asked the teens

if they’d like to try writing picture books.

We created a contest, established rules, and offered a cash prize. The first year we promoted the contest through social media, the library website, department chairs and school librarians. Now it’s taken on a life of its own.”

In an interview with three of Shack’s four children, as they gathered at the library Feb. 4 to review the entries, daughter Sherry Cleary explained their thinking.

“The inspiration for this library thing was that she really loved the process of children learning to read — and she loved this library,” she said. “It was our first choice to memorialize and honor her because when people would visit her, she would say, ‘Want to see my library? Let’s go see my library.’ She would bring people here, which is a little weird. It would make me laugh.”

All four children agreed that the library was the appropriate spot for Shack’s lasting legacy.

And now, the library is pleased to announce this year’s prize winners in the 3rd Annual Helen Stein Shack Picture Book Awards — a contest showcasing writing and illustration talent in Three Village secondary schools.

Each year students in grades 7 through 12 are invited to submit an original children’s picture book created by a single person or an author/illustrator team. There are two judging categories: Grades 7 to 9 and Grades 10 to 12. There is a first and second place winner in each category.

Shack was an intelligent and courageous woman. After graduating from Brooklyn College in the early 1950s, she obtained an elementary school teaching job in California, and boarded a train heading west, alone.

Residents envision 25A’s future

By Rita J. Egan Rita@tbRnewspapeRs.com Following public forums, the future of the Route 25A corridor in the Three Village area is coming into focus.

More than a year ago, the Brookhaven Town Department of Planning, Environment and Land Management was authorized to create a land use study and plan regarding the state highway from the Smithtown town line heading east to the Poquott Village line. This was after town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D–Port Jefferson Station) co-sponsored land use resolutions at the Jan. 14 and Feb. 4, 2016, town board meetings.

After the go-ahead from the town, the Citizens Advisory Committee was formed with co-chairs George Hoffman, vice president of the Three Village Civic Association, and Jane Taylor, assistant head of The Stony Brook School. The committee organized a num-

ber of community meetings to give business owners, store tenants and residents in Stony Brook, Setauket and East Setauket the opportunity to discuss their concerns and hopes for land use along the state road.

The meetings, led by consulting firm BFJ Planning, culminated with a wrap-up session at The Stony Brook School earlier this month, and the result will be a document that will guide business and landowners when it comes to building and renovating in the future.

Hoffman said he found the process over the past year rewarding.

“We really made a lot of progress pulling together all the groups that make up our community, and I think we have a clearer vision of what we like about it, and what we’d like to enhance as we go forward,” Hoffman said.

At the March 4 meeting, residents were given a summary of the community’s visions for the hamlets based on previous visioning meetings. Frank Fish, Noah Levine and Graham Cavanagh of BFJ Planning informed those in

Romaine, Cartright and state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) were among elected officials who attended the visioning meetings. Englebright said he was impressed at how constructive the meetings were, and how Cartright and Romaine made themselves accessible during the process.

The assemblyman said he wasn’t surprised by the concerns and desires raised.

Many residents said they did not want to see the road widened, but instead would like it to include more green space. Another hope of many residents is to make the road safer by adding a continuous sidewalk and creating lanes for bicyclists.

“I look forward to doing everything possible to add a sidewalk — the walkability aspect of this and [a lane] for bicycles,” Englebright said.

Corner at the southeast corner of Route 25A and Nicolls Road was another concern brought up by many at the meetings. Hoffman said people would like to see the buildings located on the corner updated with some sort of consistent architecture “because it’s the gateway to the Setaukets.”

The architectural consistency in all the hamlets was an additional topic raised at the meetings.

“The historic architectural style and character of the Three Village area is something that is a constant reminder of why a lot of us live here,” Englebright said. “We love the architecture. ... People indicated how much they value it, and that for any reconstruction or new construction, that should be a benchmark of expectation to be compatible with who we are architecturally.”

Colleagues remember former SBU professor Peter Paul

By Rita J. EGan Rita@tbRnewspapeRs.com For nearly 50 years, Setauket’s Peter Paul was a prominent member of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University. With his death March 11 at the age of 84, the physicist left behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come, especially by his former colleagues.

A native of Dresden, Germany, Paul received a Ph.D. from the University of Freiburg, and immigrated to the United States when he accepted a postdoctoral position at Stanford University.

Linwood Lee, emeritus professor, recalled when he recruited Paul in the late 1960s. A former co-worker of Lee’s worked with Paul at Stanford University and told him how impressive the physicist was.

Lee knew he had to hire him during a time when he called coming to Stony Brook University “an adventure” because the school was in its infancy.

Lee said Paul was marvelous, and he’s grateful he recruited the professor.

“We established a laboratory here, and from the moment he got here, he was the driving force to make us all do better,” Lee said.

Paul was a professor at the university from 1967 to 2015 and later a distinguished service professor in the department and served as chairman twice during his tenure. One of Paul’s greatest achievements was building a first-class nuclear physics group along with his colleagues at Stony Brook.

In 1973, when the physicist spearheaded a small group to develop, design and construct Stony Brook’s superconducting linear for heavy ions, an improvement of the university’s existing Van de Graaff accelerator, it became the first such machine at a university lab.

Gene Sprouse, now a distinguished John S. Toll professor at SBU, was a graduate student at Stanford University when he met Paul.

He later came to Stony Brook and worked on the accelerator project with him.

“That machine was really unique. It was

a very powerful accelerator at a university,” Sprouse said.

Paul Grannis, another of Paul’s colleagues at SBU, said Paul was very proud of the accelerator project.

“It enabled research that had previously not been possible to be done, and it was quite a unique facility in the country,” Grannis said.

“I know Peter was very proud of that and considered it one of his major achievements.”

Paul became a member of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee in 1980, and as chair, led the development of the 1998 Nuclear Science Long Range Plan, which in turn led to the construction of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Paul was appointed deputy director for science and technology in 1998 at BNL, and when John Marburger was appointed as President George W. Bush’s scientific advisor in 2001, Paul stepped in as interim director at the laboratory until 2003. Under Paul’s direction, BNL made many advances, including starting the construction of Brookhaven’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials, and conceptualizing the electroncollider as a successor — Linwood Lee ion to RHIC. Paul returned to SBU after serving as interim director at BNL, and his ongoing success was never a surprise to those who knew him.

“Peter was very energetic and driven,” Sprouse said. “He was always pushing for excellence.”

Sprouse described Paul as a visionary who helped to create the Stony Brook University people know today, especially the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

“Throughout his career he helped to build the nuclear physics groups at Stony Brook, he helped to build the department, and then he helped to build things at Brookhaven,” Sprouse said. “He always kept an eye out for putting in place instruments and institutes that could strengthen Stony Brook in particular and Brookhaven, too.”

Grannis echoed Sprouse’s praise of Paul.

“He was very motivated to do the best that he could in all of his scientific endeavors and

to insist that all those who worked with him do so,” Grannis said.

Chang Kee Jung, a SUNY distinguished professor, said when Paul returned to Stony Brook after his time at BNL, he looked for a research program to be involved in. He said he was surprised when Paul knocked on his office door one day and told him he was interested in the projects he was working on at the time.

Jung said he was hesitant at first due to Paul’s extensive experience. However, Paul assured him he would never do anything to interfere. Jung said Paul was always curious to learn more in his field, and didn’t have an ego despite all of his successes. The professor said Paul was the perfect person to have on his team, and he became an advisor to Jung.

The two worked together until Paul became the university’s associate vice president for Brookhaven affairs — a position he held until his retirement in 2015.

He also remembers Paul fondly on a personal level and said he was grateful for the opportunity to visit the professor at home a couple of weeks before his death.

“Among all the people I met at Stony Brook, he was the strongest supporter of me, personally,” Jung said. “For whatever reason he liked me and the projects I was doing.”

Lee added that like many professors, Paul was always proud of his students. Many left SBU for prestigious careers, including Michael Thoennessen, chair, APS division of nuclear physics at Michigan University. Thoennessen wrote in an email Paul was his Ph.D. adviser when he attended SBU in the late 1980s.

“In Germany the Ph.D. adviser is called the ‘Doktor Vater’ (Ph.D. Father) and that is exactly what Peter was to his students,” Thoennessen wrote. “In addition to being a brilliant scientist and a great administrator, Peter was an amazing mentor. I would not be where I am right now without Peter’s advice and guidance.”

Grannis added that despite a demanding career, Paul led a well-rounded life.

“He had a very broad range of interests not only in science but in music, in travel, in reading,” Grannis said. “He was very well-informed on many things.”

Paul was an ardent opera-goer and hiker, and Jung remembers the professor being in his 70s and still traveling upstate to go skiing.

His career provided him the opportunity to travel extensively, too. Among his trips were

vacations to his homeland of Germany.

In his lifetime, Paul received numerous awards including the American Physical Society Fellow, Institute of Physics Fellow, Sloane Research Fellow, Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award and the Order of Merit First Class from the German government. Paul is also an inductee in the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame. However, his greatest honor may be the legacy he leaves behind at Stony Brook University.

“Peter was one of the people that made us a better university,” Lee said. “He was active in associating us with Brookhaven, and he was always a booster of the university, and we always boosted Peter. It was hard to keep him because he was recognized as a top scientist. He turned down some very good offers to stay here.”

Sprouse said Paul inspired many to come to SBU and helped them, with his encouragement and leadership, to develop their careers.

“I just think that he was somebody that was really dedicated to the university and wanted to build it,” he said. “For those of us who were at Stony Brook, 40, 50 years ago, Stony Brook was kind of a dream, and Peter really made it a reality.”

A 21-year-old man from Wyandanch took two cellphones from Five Guys restaurant on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station at about 3:30 p.m. March 15, according to police. He also punched another man in the face before exiting.

At the same time and place, a 21-yearold woman from Port Jefferson kicked another woman in the face several times and smashed the victims face into the pavement, police said. The victim was transported to St. Charles Hospital for treatment of injuries. Both the man and woman were arrested and the man was charged with petit larceny and second-degree harassment. The woman was charged with third-degree assault.

At about 6:30 p.m. March 20, a 31-yearold man from Ronkonkoma was driving a 1997 Chevrolet on Pine Street in Port Jefferson Station when he was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to police. He possessed heroin and crack cocaine, police said. He was arrested and charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

In the rear of a home on Radio Avenue in Miller Place at about 7 p.m. March 20, a 24-year-old man from Medford had marijuana sitting on the backseat of a parked vehicle, according to police. He also had medication without a valid prescription, police said. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Unlicensed driver

A 41-year-old man from Mount Sinai was driving a 2010 Ford on Griffin Drive in Mount Sinai at about 6:30 p.m. March 19 when he was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to police. Police discovered he was driving with a suspended license for a seventh time. He was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

At about 9 p.m. March 19, a 43-year-old man from Selden exited a car and walked into lanes of traffic on Route 97 in Selden, causing cars to have to come to a stop, according to police. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

A 33-year-old man from Port Jefferson stole a wallet with identification from Comsewogue Public Library at about 1 p.m. March 18, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Riding off into the sunset

Three dirt bikes were stolen from the yard of a home on Champlain Street in Terryville at about 9 a.m. March 17, according to police.

At about 6:30 p.m. March 20, a 24-yearold man from Coram was driving on Route 25A in Rocky Point when he was directed to stop by a police officer who turned on lights and sirens, according to police. The driver began to pull over, then accelerated and made a right turn onto Hunter Avenue, police said. He then failed to maintain his lane, went through a stop sign, accelerated and drove into the woods. In the woods, he and two other passengers fled the vehicle on foot and were eventually apprehended by police officers. The driver was arrested and charged with reckless driving and third-degree fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle.

Near the intersection of Helme Avenue and Henry Drive in Miller Place at about 4 p.m. March 19, a 24-year-old man from Miller Place possessed heroin and marijuana according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A 24-year-old woman from Rocky Point who worked at Walmart in the Centereach Mall took cash from the register March 20, according to police. She was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

On five occasions between Jan. 30 and March 10, a 29-year-old man from Coram who worked at Home Depot on Pond Path in South Setauket allowed an acquaintance to take merchandise from the store and exit without paying, according to police. Spring programs at West Meadow Beach Brookhaven Town kicked off their spring school and group education program season March 20. The program includes a tour of the historic West Meadow Beach, discussion of the unique ecology of the 1.5 mile-long peninsula and education about the invasive species threatening the area. Groups will also help to remove perennial pepperweed and other invasive species in the area as part of a cooperative

environmental program.

Zeldin calls for Long Island Sound, Estuary Program funding

Congressman wants full funding of two programs, at least $36.5 million combined

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com The quality of Long Island waters has been on the mind of elected officials from all levels of government recently, and a representative from the federal government has joined the fray, calling for more funding for two Environmental Protection Agency programs.

“There’s much we can do to improve water quality in the Long Island Sound and National Estuary, and I’ll continue working in Congress to ensure our waterways are preserved for generations to come,” U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) said during a press conference March 13.

Southold Town Council members and residents from the 1st Congressional District gathered at Veterans Memorial Park in Mattituck as Zeldin called on the federal government to fully fund at least $10 million to the Long Island Sound Study and $26.5 million to the National Estuary Program in its upcoming appropriations process at the end of April, and also to support the passage of the Long Island Sound Restoration and Stewardship Act. He said funding for the two EPA programs is essential to address urgent and challenging issues that threaten the ecological and economic well-being of Long Island’s coastal areas, such as nitrogen, harmful algae blooms and flooding or wetland loss.

“Over the years, water quality around Long Island has suffered from pollution, overdevelopment and other negative impacts ... and I’m calling on my colleagues to make sure these programs are fully supported and funded, and certainly not eliminated,” Zeldin said, highlighting the significant impacts each of the programs have had on the region.

The Long Island Sound is one of our natural treasures, the congressman said, and is a precious feature of the life, culture and economy of more than 9 million people living in the coastal communities around it. He voiced his admiration of the Long Island Sound Study for its dedication to water quality and wetlands restoration in addition to local conservation projects to restore beaches and protect wildlife.

He called the National Estuary Program “an important EPA wetlands protection program for 28 estuaries in the U.S.,” two of which being the Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay. The program was established by the Clean Water Act in 1987 to provide grants to states where nationally significant estuaries are threatened.

Zeldin said he will continue to work alongside Democrats and Republicans in the region to secure the funding as he did to stop President Barack Obama’s (D) proposed 22 percent cut to the Long Island Sound in 2016.

The Long Island Sound Restoration and Stewardship Act, he said, was introduced at the last Congress by himself and former 3rd District U.S. Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) and will propose tens-of-millions of dollars in funding per year through 2020 for a water quality and shore restoration program. Zeldin plans to reintroduce the bill during this congressional session.

Setauket Harbor Task Force Trustee George Hoffman voiced support for Zeldin and his call for funding to protect local waters.

“With Congressman Zeldin’s strong advocacy and leadership, the Long Island Sound Study, a consortium of federal, state and environmental organizations has turned the corner on cleaning up the water in LI Sound and its harbors and bays,” he said. “Federal funding is critical to survival of this important and productive estuary.”

Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell spoke briefly in response to Zeldin’s longtime presence in the area.

“The people of the East End and people of the first [district] have made it clear time and time again that the environment is a top priority and the congressman has been a zeal-

ous advocate on behalf of us, on behalf of the environment, and on behalf of our natural resources,” Russell said. “Time and time again, he’s disproved the myth that Republicans aren’t friends of the environment ... Republicans are and he is.”

Councilman Bob Ghosio took to the podium to speak about the importance of the proposed funding.

“Talking about nitrogen in the bays and creeks and knowing the Long Island Sound and estuaries [here], particularly in Southold are what drives our economy, our tourism, our jobs and our recreation, just tells me how important this is,” Ghosio said. “Getting the funds to keep this area healthy for the future — for my kids, my grandkids and generations thereafter is very important to us.”

When asked by a resident what he thinks of some of his Republican colleagues advancing toward eliminating EPA entirely, Zeldin reminded those in attendance he voted against a 17 percent cut to the EPA last year.

“There are 535 members of Congress, all with very different ideologies and backgrounds and you get a whole lot of diversity on these issues and so I have a lot of colleagues who would support completely eliminating the EPA altogether,” Zeldin said. “But again, I voted against the 17 percent cut so to ask me how I feel about a 100 percent cut, there’s some precedent in it.”

Roundabouts were suggested for both Stony Brook Road and Main Street, and the New York State Department of Transportation is considering a traffic light at the soft right turn onto Nicolls or removal of the soft right altogether.

While other transportation issues and wants were discussed, including creating pullover areas for buses and supporting a trolley bus service for Stony Brook students and residents, recreation areas were another concern. The talks included improved civic space for gatherings, picnics and similar recreational activities as well as maintenance of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation-administered Patriots Hollow State Forest.

Hoffman said some of the proposed guidelines have already been a help to Parviz Farahzad, who is constructing Stony Brook Square located across from Stony Brook train station. Development of the shopping center was approved at the March 6 town planning board meeting. Farahzad has agreed to add more trees to the final site plan, will require tenants use signage that consists of wood-base signs with gooseneck lighting among other concessions. The developer also hopes to install a low nitrogen septic system if he receives a waiver from the county for the new system. According to Hoffman, such systems help to protect the water in local harbors.

Hoffman said BFJ Planning is compiling a final document and, in a few weeks, the CAC will present a report to the town board. The ultimate goal is for the town to take into consideration the suggestions and incorporate them into future land use changes in the area through zoning changes.

TFCU has elected to underwrite six onsite and six distance learning programs for students attending schools within communities where its branches are located. Both on-site and distance learning programs will be scheduled at The Brewster House or The Thompson House in East Setauket, and an on-site program at the Stony Brook Grist Mill.

Joseph William Taub, age 90, died peacefully at his home in Stony Brook Feb. 19.

Joe was born in Brooklyn Dec. 22, 1926. He was a loving husband and devoted father of eight children. Joe was a Navy veteran who proudly served in Panama, and apprenticed with UA Plumbers Local Union 200 after his return. He worked tirelessly to support his family and began his own plumbing and heating business after more than 15 years of union work. Joe had a creative spirit and loved to work with his hands, and spent many retirement hours lovingly crafting furniture pieces at home for family and friends.

Joe was an honest, soft-spoken man with a generous heart, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Joe is predeceased by his wife Gloria of 66 years and survived by his children Terrance, Thomas, Timothy, Tracy, Victoria, Jean, Melissa and Barbara; 21 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild.

Local finds way to continue grappling Alex Goldenberg has always tried to stay in shape. A 2008 graduate of Ward Melville, he was a four-year starter on the varsity wrestling team and enjoyed the physical conditioning required to stay competitive.

Even after graduating, Goldenberg continued to work out regularly while pursuing his bachelor’s degree at Stony Brook University.

With the university having no formal wrestling program, he couldn’t find a satisfying outlet for his training and competitive nature. Staying in shape is one thing, but competing at a high level is something altogether different.

Now working long hours at Coach Realtors in Stony Brook helping buyers and sellers negotiate the local real estate market, he continued to exercise at local gyms and recently, discovered Jiu Jitsu classes at Kioto Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym in Port Jefferson Station. The sport emphasizes throws and takedowns similar to wrestling.

After signing up and practicing for just six weeks, Goldenberg joined five other members of Kioto in competing in an areawide Jiu Jitsu tournament held at Baruch College in Manhattan March 5. Despite being new to the sport and competing against more experienced opponents, he won all four of his matches to take first place in his weight class

Enjoying his first tournament, Goldenberg said he plans to continue with his newfound sport, al-

though he pointed out that there is a downside to contact sports like Jiu Jitsu.

“You do get marks and bruises,” he said jokingly. “When I’m at work and meeting with people all day long and I’m wearing a suit, I don’t want to look like I just got into a fight with someone.”

Registation is open for the 2017 Under Armour Underclass Lacrosse Tournament June 29 to July 2 at Towson University in Maryland.

The 2017 tournament will again feature two divisions in each region — the Command Division for the 2020 and 2021 classes and the Highlight Division for the class of 2018 and 2019. Each division will compete within itself at the tryouts and main event.

The regional teams will be selected via tryouts during May and June. Once selected, the underclass teams will travel to Baltimore and compete in the Under Armour Underclass Tournament. Each team will battle it out in a pool play tour-

nament at the Under Armour AllAmerica Lacrosse Weekend to be crowned the Nation’s Elite.

Players will be judged by a panel of knowledgeable sources including coaching experts from the region. Each team will consist of a maximum of 22 players and will be chosen based on position and performance at that day’s tryout. Teams will be announced 48 hours after the tryout.

Guidelines and procedures have been created to help foster inclusionary fairness for all players.

The Setauket Elementary School fourth-grader recently won the CYO Knights of Columbus free-throw shooting contest, scoring on 22 of 25 attempts to win the Suffolk County title.

The 9-year-old will compete for the Long Island championship title March 25 at Chaminade High School.

Students racing to remain healthy Setauket Elementary School’s Mighty Milers running club is working to stay active and healthy this winter by running more than 500 miles so far. An initiative organized by the New York Road Runners association, the club is currently open to students in grades K-2 and will expand this spring

to include the upper grades.

Students are able to earn rewards from the New York Road Runners based on the number of miles they run. Upperclassmen from Setauket are currently volunteering during the club’s meeting to help keep track of the progress each runner makes.

Grabbing gold:

Nassakeag Elementary School third-grader Michaela Cassara competed in figure skating at the Empire State Winter Games in Lake Placid, and won the gold medal in her group for the second consecutive year. With this accomplishment, Michaela earned a spot to compete in the State Games of America in Grand Rapids, Michigan this summer.

Perspective on Presidents Day Rally

Don’t sit out of the health care discussion President Donald Trump (R) is making the rounds in an effort to sell the American Health Care Act to fellow Republican leaders to ensure the bill eventually gets signed into law.

Millions of Americans have been waiting with bated breath for a new health care plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare. Once Majority House Speaker Paul Ryan (R) finally unveiled the AHCA last month, analysis and reports on the effects of the plan have been coming from every direction, some positive and some negative.

This week our editorial staff focused on comparing tax credits residents would receive in the near future under both Obamacare and AHCA. Tax credits are an amount a taxpayer can reduce in federal income tax they owe.

It’s clear when comparing this information that many citizens stand to lose a substantial amount in tax credits compared to what they had with Obamacare, if the proposed bill becomes a law, though other residents would stand to gain more money back.

We encourage our readers to check out informational websites like the Kaiser Family Foundation, which has created a map to help show residents how much in tax credits they would lose or gain depending on their age and income if AHCA is passed in Congress, as well as read a deep analysis of the proposed bill, and how it would affect people across the U.S. With something as important as health care, it’s vital to understand what might change with your coverage before Congress votes. The House is scheduled to vote on the AHCA today, March 23. One of the few powers you have as a citizen is to voice your support or concern with policy changes to local representatives, but that power becomes useless if you wait too long.

It’s hard to believe Presidents Day protesters or passersby could have missed what folks on the North Country Patriots’ side of 25A considered important at the Feb. 20 Not My President’s Day rally. The many passing motorists honking, waving and giving thumbs up were proof the signage was clearly readable, even at 40 miles per hour. Meanwhile the music proved loud enough to have attendees on both sides of the road toe-tapping.

Samples of signs included “God Bless America,” “Trump 2020,” “God Bless the Troops,” “Never Forget 9/11,” “Honk to Support the Troops” and “Build the Wall.” Some audio selections were “American Soldier,” “God Bless the USA,” “God Bless America,” “Made in the USA” and the “Pledge of Allegiance.”

That pro-American theme reflects the thinking of the many veterans who’ve stood on this corner for years.

Unfortunately, it appears some would mischaracterize people in favor of building a wall as having “minds full of hatred.”

Given that’s a perilously narrow criterion for such a weighty, sweeping charge, now’s a good time to put the construction of that border wall in proper his-

President George W. Bush signed The Secure Fence Act into law on Oct. 26, 2006. It had passed both the House (283–138) and the Senate (80–19) with huge bipartisan support. One young senator who had nice things to say about the legislation was none other than Barack Obama. He stated, “The bill before us will certainly do some good,” saying further it offered “better fences and better security along our borders” and would “help stem some of the tide of illegal immigration in this country.”

the Democrat Party, we’d assume to be non-hating heavyweights, including but not limited to Senators Chuck Schumer, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton.

On Presidents Day, the North County Patriots’ beliefs were clearly demonstrated, through both their signs and music. And if advocating for a wall to “help stem some of the tide of illegal immigration” is going to be applied by someone as a benchmark for hatred, that ridiculously wide net should include the famous senators listed above.

Real lies not innocuous ‘factoids’ Mr. George Altemose (The Village Times Herald, March 2) uses folksiness — grandkids “math facts” — and two apolitical and irrelevant examples to obfuscate the fact that the torrent of “alternative facts” spewing from the Trump team are real lies and not innocuous “factoids” we can agree to disagree on. He states that 2+2=4 and 3+3=6 are “alternative math facts.” Maybe for kids who don’t appreciate the meaning of “alternative.” For adults, each is a unique statement, which has no alternative, two of the infinite set of such statements describing addition of integers.

He then states that the celestial object Pluto was called a planet from 1930 to 2006, after which it was called something else. That is not an issue of truth but a problem you get when you try to force the real world into arbitrary categories. Pluto was and remains the same real

object, which orbits the sun, is large enough to be spherical and even has moons. What changed controversially in 2006 was the definition of an arbitrary technical term, “planet,” to include that it should be large enough to have (largely) swept up the debris in its orbit during its lifetime. No one denies that Pluto exists.

Now let’s examine two out of many recent “alternative facts.”

Kellyanne Conway repeated on several venues that the nonexistent Bowling Green Massacre of U.S. soldiers by Iraqi terrorists actually happened. It was a falsehood, but Conway had an agenda: that we should be terrified of Muslim terror more than of any other threat, so Trump’s Muslim ban must not be questioned. And so, it was a deliberate lie.

President Trump repeated on many occasions that two to five million illegal aliens voted for Clinton, depriving him of a popu-

lar vote victory. (Clinton received 2.8 million more votes.) He offered zero evidence, all state secretaries of state denied serious cases of voter fraud. (Individual voter impersonation fraud is estimated to run to at most hundreds in any year, and a mere handful of cases have been prosecuted in the last century.) The statement was false, but Trump also has an agenda: to justify the new voter ID laws in many Republican-controlled states that are designed to obstruct minorities, poor people and students from voting (a North Carolina judge ruled “with surgical precision”). Again, a bald-faced lie.

Claiming that “events” that did not occur actually did occur (or the contrary) is lying. When the Trump administration does it systematically, threatening our democratic process, no issue is more important.

ong ago, I wrote a column about vomit and education. No, I didn’t suggest that teachers should encourage vomiting or that education gets better amid the smell of vomit.

Sorry to those of you who are gagging even at these words.

No, for those without an encyclopedic knowledge of my columns — OK, all of you — I wrote that my son, who was only 5 at the time, often came home with exactly the same answer to the question about what happened in school: “Nothing.” Then, one day, a classmate was in the middle of saying

everything that poured out of his classmate’s mouth. It didn’t stop there.

He recounted each of the steps the teacher took to clean it up and resettle the room and then, to my shock, he shared a few things about the next lessons she tried to teach.

While I’m not suggesting the value of vomit in the classroom, I did recognize something unusual that occurs during these high-energy moments: People pay more attention.

What triggered — bad word choice here, I know — my thinking about this observation is March Madness. The NCAA basketball tournament has 64 teams entering this bracket, all of whom have fans, family and friends hoping their journey can go just one more game all the way to the championship.

Now, these games can be — and often are — ridiculously exciting, with young players pushing themselves to the limits of their speed, endurance and coordination to make impossible game-winning shots that carry their fans to the next level of ecstasy.

and recount what we’ve just witnessed, taking us through the moment when they got the ball at the top of the key, faked left, passed it to a teammate, and then crashed the boards just in time to grab the rebound and slam home the game-winner.

We know what we saw and rarely, if ever, do these interviews produce much more than, “Yeah, it was great,” or “I’m so excited, I just don’t have words for this.”

So, this is where the vomit analogy comes in. Some of these players likely contribute to causes, believe in community service, have something to say about what they’ve overcome, can share the best advice they’ve ever gotten or remember a moment that still matters.

I realize it’s asking a lot of the reporters and the athletic superstar whose primary concern may be going to the bathroom, getting his uniform clean for the next game or getting to the bus on time to go to the airport.

Still, these moments, with the players, coaches and even fans could include some kind of life lesson. Players

don’t need to preach, nor do they have to demand that we participate in their favorite charity. However, they can use the spotlight to inspire and encourage us with their incredible achievements off the field, their commitments to family or their contributions to a church group.

Now, I realize Olympic coverage often includes features about people who are dedicating their efforts to a relative or who volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters. And, I appreciate how sports purists may find the effort an intrusion in the cliché-riddled wide world of sports, where the players are just happy to help the team and they take everything one game at a time and they try not to do too much.

But some day, that athlete will no longer have the microphone and some day, the world will no longer be watching. While we’re inspired and moved by their magnificence on the court, how about if, to the extent possible, they also encourage us to follow their lead in other arenas. An energized audience may see this as a chance to turn a good game into a great achievement.

Getting passionate with politics

hether you voted for Donald Trump or not, you have to agree that he is responsible for a positive outcome from his campaign and his election. He has animated the population he serves. It is no secret that Americans have, as a country, been largely apolitical. When I have traveled to other countries, especially when I first began, I have consistently been impressed by and even envied how much politics and current events were a part of the

were regarded as a little odd for their political passions. I have not found many people who were deeply interested in our government, its processes, its politics and its politicians. Indeed, spot person-in-the-street interviews regularly revealed that most respondents did not know who held which office beyond that of the president and perhaps the governor.

Not any longer.

Imagine my surprise when the 4-year-old son of a friend came home from nursery school and announced his opinion of President Trump, complete with reasons. A 13-year-old I met knows the name of the Environmental Protection Agency chief (Scott Pruitt), and a 15-year-old announced that she wants to register as a Republican as soon as her age allows so she can help decide who the party’s next candidate might be. These are not just youngsters parroting what their parents are saying. In some cases the youngsters disagree with their parents. How do they know to do that? They are now surrounded by news, whether on television, with blasts on their iPhones,

from talking to each other in class or hearing many adults offering different opinions. Wherever all of us go, to a doctor’s appointment, to a casual restaurant, in and out of stores (with the exception so far of supermarkets), there is a television turned on and we hear the latest comments from both parties, outrageous or not. The media are having a field day reporting quotables. And the public is deluged.

Kids, remember, are part of the public.

How long can you be at a dinner party before the talk turns to politics?

When you wake up in the morning and switch on the radio or the TV, don’t you expect to hear the latest quote from Donald Trump? The president has managed to dominate world news so provocatively that his is the most well-known name on the planet.

I think what has happened is a good thing. An informed and engaged public is necessary for a democracy to exist. Our Founding Fathers said as much. The United States has had a dismal voting record at the polls during election season for scores of years. Less than half of those eligible

actually vote here compared with other, newer democracies where voters may risk their lives in order to cast their votes. We, living in a nation that is the symbol of democracy, are too complacent to be bothered voting or too cynical to think that our vote might matter.

So I am delighted to see young people talking about politics and asking how government works. And we in the news business are validated by the sight of grown-ups arguing government policies on street corners. Let’s get everybody involved, even if it takes incredible, unprecedented comments and actions to stir us up. I came of age in the Vietnam era when marches and, yes, riots in opposition to government policy toppled a sitting president and eventually stopped the war.

The good news is we don’t have to riot. We don’t even have to march. All we have to do is go to the polls and vote. And if we don’t get what We the People want, we do it again the next time until we get the public servants we wish to represent us. An informed and engaged populace is a beautiful thing.
