Library announces 2018 bookmark contest Kids in the Three Village Central School District can help encourage the community to read through their talents and creativity.

Emma S. Clark Memorial Library is once again calling all children in the district, from kindergarten through sixth grade, to create an original bookmark for entry into a special bookmark contest.

Winners will receive the honor of having their bookmarks printed and distributed at the library throughout the year, just like the 2017 bookmark champions Lorenzo, Dhikshika and Ashlynn. In previous years, the library has received approximately 60 entries annually, and it hopes to see more in 2018.

To pick up an official entry form and bookmark template, kids may stop by the children’s reference desk or download the form at kids.emmaclark.org. The entry deadline is March 31.

Winners will be announced May 1 and

chosen in three categories: kindergarten through second, third and fourth grades, and fifth and sixth grades.

Soup’s on for fundraising Ward Melville High School students Rebecca Holt and Lucia Buscemi are spearheading a fundraiser to raise $30,000 to build a school in Malawi this summer in conjunction with the nonprofit buildOn, and they are hoping the Three Village Community will join them in their efforts.

On March 18, they will host a soup cookoff at The Bates House in Setauket.

Attendees can enter their best soup for a chance to win a first place prize of $150.

Entry fee for the contest is $30. Participants will enjoy homemade soups and be able to vote for their favorite. The event will also include basket raffles and live music.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Tickets can also be purchased at the door but will be $5 more than tickets bought in advance. The buildOn Soup Cookoff will take place from noon to 3 p.m.

Ward Melville students plan walkout calling for gun legislation

Local students are planning to join others across the nation to ensure the voices of young people are heard when it comes to protesting gun violence in America and advocating for gun control.

A walkout has been planned by Ward Melville High School students for Wednesday, March 14, at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes to remember the 17 victims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The event will be held in conjunction with similar walkouts taking place in schools all over the United States.

One of the student organizers, Maya Peña-Lobel, said it is important to speak out about gun violence in America. She said it is outrageous nothing has been done about gun control after the shootings at Columbine High School, Sandy Hook Elementary School and the Orlando nightclub shooting.

“I believe it’s very important to be able to contribute to society because although we may not be able to vote until we’re 18, it’s still our country, and it’s still our future at stake,” Peña-Lobel said. “Students aren’t powerless, and we need to show other students that.”

Peña-Lobel along with fellow student organizers Bennett Owens, Haley Linden, Marielle Leiboff, Charlotte O’Dell and Noah Mond met with the high school’s principal Alan Baum March 2 to discuss the walkout.

“It was a good meeting overall,” Owens said. “We planned originally on walking out of the front entrance but over safety concerns, [Baum] would rather us walk out of the north side entrance, which is the gym entrance. It wasn’t like his way was ridiculous in any way.

Obviously, he had plans that we as students don’t, and he was looking out for our safety.”

Owens, a senior, said school security will also be on hand for the 17-minute event, and he was told students will not receive any disciplinary action for participating as long as they remain civil. Owens said he was working on inviting a speaker to address the crowd, and there will also be a moment of silence. Teachers who are unable to participate will be given orange ribbons to show their support.

“The district is working on a plan in concert with building administration and the board of education regarding this matter,” district spokeswoman Jessica Novins said in a statement March 5 when asked about the event. “Once finalized, the plans will be communicated to students and parents.”

Many parents in the district, such as Mike Ferrara, are concerned about the walkout.

He said he supports the students’ rights to peacefully assemble and their freedom of speech and believes it’s a teachable moment.

However, he said he also believes it should be done outside of school hours. The parent said he hopes the board of education will evaluate the decision and consider potential future ramifications.

Ward Melville students are planning a walkout on March 14 to remember the Parkland, Florida, shooting victims and to support new gun laws.

“Where our responsibility lies as parents and school officials is to provide guidance as to when and where their protests occur and that they are respectfully executed,” Ferrara said. “In my opinion, it is not appropriate that our children be allowed, even encouraged, to walk out during school hours. The impact of their statement will become divisive and disruptive if that is the case. It will also be viewed by many as an endorsement by our school district of a particular position on the issues. For example, if a group of students organized a walkout in support of restrictions

on abortions, I believe it is highly unlikely that it would be allowed. Allowing walkouts to make political statements of any kind may open doors that can never be closed.”

Other parents, including local political activist Shoshana Hershkowitz, support the students in their decision.

“As a parent and educator, I think that the walkout is an excellent lesson for students about civil disobedience and the First Amendment,” she said. “This type of action is a cornerstone of the anti-war movement, the civil rights movement and women’s suffrage.

The students are seeking change, and this is a way to express that desire. My hope for these students is that they will continue their quest for change with civic engagement.”

Peña-Lobel said the response so far from students has been positive. She said while many of her friends have similar beliefs to her, those with contrasting opinions on guns have been respectful of the participants planning to peacefully stand up for their beliefs.

While the organizers cannot hang posters at school, they have been sharing information on the Instagram account @wmhs_walkout.

The account had more than 250 followers as of March 5. Peña-Lobel said it’s important for them to spread the word about the walkout and get as many supporters as possible.

“We want to be taken seriously,” Peña-Lobel said. “This isn’t a joke. This is a real thing about real people’s lives, and it could really happen anywhere and at any time.”

Kindergarten Registration for the 2018-2019 School Year The Three Village Central School District offers a full-day kindergarten program for district residents. In order to be admitted to Kindergarten in September, a child must be five years of age, on or before December 1st, during the school year in which they enter kindergarten. A proof of residency (a lease, deed, tax bill or signed contract) must be provided, along with the child’s original birth certificate, and a copy of their immunization records at the time of registration. Registration occurs Monday -Thursday at the Central Registration Office at the North Country Administration Center (100 Suffolk Avenue, Stony Brook) from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-3:30 p.m.

Children must be registered with the Registrar’s Office at the North Country Administration Center prior to Kindergarten screening.

Stony Brook students and faculty members participate in a rally Feb. 28 to encourage the university to continue practices that support sexual assault and harassment survivors, and provide additional services.

SBU students march to keep the #MeToo conversation alive

Student Aleeza Kazmi, one of the approximately 250 marchers at Stony Brook University Feb. 28, said the mission of the event was to show support for survivors of sexual assault and harassment, and to request the university increase preventative measures and provide more assistance for survivors.

Kazmi said it’s important for the university’s administration to respond to the requests, especially with Stony Brook being a HeForShe 10×10×10 IMPACT school.

The university is one of 10 schools involved in the UN Women initiative, the United Nations gender equality entity that aims to engage men and boys to encourage the empowerment of women. The student said the university needs to do more for sexual abuse survivors.

“HeForShe is used as a shield and a title and a publicity move for President Stanley and the rest of the administration to say we are here with women, and we support feminism,” Kazmi said.

David Clark, vice president of the student organization Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, said when Kazmi came to the student organization with the idea, he agreed that it was needed on campus.

“She wanted to make sure the #MeToo movement was having a bigger conversation on campus,” Clark said. “And, she had some of her own concerns about Stony Brook, while being a HeForShe IMPACT school, not really talking much as far as official statements and events about #MeToo and sexual harassment.”

Before the march, Kazmi read a poem and statement from Arianna Rodriguez. In February, Rodriguez alleged that SBU swimming and diving coach Janelle Atkinson, who was dismissed from her position, emotionally

abused members of the team.

“I challenge you to support your friends and fellow classmates who have been victims of sexual assaults and to help guide them back to normalcy,” Kazmi read from Rodriguez’s statement. “And, I challenge all the survivors of sexual assault to continue living normal lives. I know it’s hard at times, but no one is stronger than you are, and your strength will give you the power to live life to the fullest and persevere. No matter who tells you differently.”

Clark said he was pleased to see so many students and some faculty members, both females and males, in attendance.

“We were pretty certain that there were going to be people who were survivors there, whether they said it or not,” Clark said. “We wanted to make sure that they knew that the student body supports them and that they’re in an environment where they are believed and, whether or not they choose to report, that there’s support for survivors here at Stony Brook.”

FMLA also composed a letter that will be submitted to SBU administrators. At press time nearly 100 student groups and organizations, students, alumni, faculty members and community organizations have signed it.

Clark said among their requests, the signers asked in order to maintain the protections of survivors, that the university keep certain practices in place such as letting both parties appeal the rulings of sexual misconduct hearings and prohibiting cross examination between the accused and accuser during sexual misconduct hearings.

Clark said members of FMLA are concerned after the Office of Civil Rights of the Department of Education made changes to Title IX. Among the rights of students it covers in the educational system, the federal civil rights law ensures students involved in sexual assault and harassment cases are afforded certain protections.

In the letter the protesters also asked for the university to address the issue of Atkinson and the allegations made against her.

Kazmi, a journalism student in her junior year, said she and Clark met with Jeff Barnett, assistant dean of students, a few days before the rally, and with Cathrine Duffy, associate director of student support, March 2. Kazmi and Clark said they feel university administrators have been receptive to the students and their ideas.

“I feel optimistic that the university is going to be open to working with us,” Kazmi said. “I don’t think the university is against increasing awareness for survivors and preventing future sexual assaults.”

After the rally, LeManuel Lee Bitsóí, chief diversity officer at Stony Brook, released a statement supporting the students.

“It was great to see so many SBU community members participate in the #MeToo rally today,” Bitsóí said. “It illustrates the level of engagement by our

students around social justice and equity issues and challenges that all of us face in society. Our leadership team is inspired by the activism of student leaders and we collectively support them in their efforts.”

Kazmi, an abuse survivor, said the march was the first time she said, “Me too,” in public. She said at first she questioned why she was organizing and speaking at the event instead of just participating.

“After the march, I realized this is why I did this, because of how many people came and how many people messaged me privately and hugged me afterward and said thank you, because someone needed to do it,” Kazmi said. “And if it was me, and if it caused me some frustrations a couple of days before, that’s OK, because it was completely all worth it. And I’m so proud of every single person who came out and the part of the administration who is going to be working with us moving forward. Our voices are being heard on this campus.”

Incidents and arrests Feb. 28–March 4 Cannabis oil possession

A 21-year-old man from Centereach driving a 2013 Chevrolet allegedly possessed concentrated cannabis oil, which police discovered during a traffic stop on Dawn Drive in Centereach at about 11:30 p.m. Feb. 28, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Wallet stolen at party

A complainant said he was at a party Feb. 28 at about 10:30 p.m. at a home on West Meadow Lane in Stony Brook where his wallet containing cash and a driver’s license was stolen, according to police.

On Jan. 20 at about 1 p.m., a 43-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station driving a 2103 Honda in the parking lot of Port Jeff Bowl on Cherub Lane in Port Jefferson Station allegedly collided with a parked, unoccupied 2016 Toyota and left the scene without exchanging contact or insurance information, according to police. He was arrested March 1 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Robbery at Kohl’s

A 36-year-old undomiciled man allegedly stole a drone and clothing from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in Setauket March 3 at about 8 p.m., according to police.

Police said he was confronted by an employee in the parking lot, and the man allegedly threatened the employee with a large knife. He was arrested March 3 and charged with first-degree robbery and resisting arrest.

A snow blower was stolen from outside of a home on Stewart Circle North in Centereach March 4 at about 2 a.m., according to police.

The fence around a home on Starfire Drive in Centereach was damaged at about 10 p.m. March 2, according to police.

At Irish Jay Tattoo on Route 25A in Miller Place March 3 at about 1 a.m., an unknown person removed the top portion of an exterior window and attempted to enter the building, according to police.

Police said an alarm went off and the suspect fled without gaining entry.

A television cable wire at a home on Lily Drive in Centereach was damaged at about 3 a.m. March 3, according to police.

Steven Perrone was operating a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle eastbound on Route 25A, just west of Acorn Road, when the

motorcycle left the roadway and crashed into a guardrail.

Perrone, 34, of East Setauket was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is in critical condition. The motorcycle was impounded for a safety check.

What we know about gun violence, understanding the facts Our nation is reeling from another school shooting involving a perpetrator who was psychologically disturbed. As we consider ways to prevent such tragedies from recurring, it is important to focus on what is known about gun violence. Only by understanding these facts can we develop strategies that are most likely to be effective.

First, the majority of gun violence is committed by people without mental illness. This is well documented by public health experts. A person with mental illness is much less likely than a person without a diagnosable mental illness to commit an act of gun violence. In fact, mentally ill people are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of gun violence. Inaccurate claims equating mental illness with gun violence promote stigma and misunderstanding about mentally ill people and may make it less likely that they will reach out to seek help.

Second, mass shootings are not as common as other acts of gun violence.

Mass shootings in schools or elsewhere — churches, movie theaters, congressional softball games, music concerts — understandably receive a lot of attention because these tragedies are exceptionally horrifying, especially when children are victims. improving mental health outreach and treatment, while important in and of itself, will not solve the much larger problem of gun violence in American society. Stationing armed guards in our schools is not a solution — this endangers our children, teachers and those who work in schools because of the weapons effect described above. And even well-trained professionals are known to make errors in high-pressure situations. As to the idea of arming teachers, there are many more serious flaws with that idea than can be listed here. Furthermore, addressing mass shootings in our schools does nothing to eliminate the 93 gun deaths that occur day in and day out in this country.

Can we enact sensible gun policies? The Supreme Court has ruled that some gun restrictions are constitutional, and evidence indicates that gun control reduces gun deaths, even though it doesn’t completely eliminate them. The vast majority of Americans, including gun owners, support sensible gun policies. So what are we waiting for? We’re waiting for our political leaders to act. Demand action from your elected officials.

Make phone calls, send letters, march, protest and vote. Get involved with organizations such as Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action. Demand action before another 93 people die tomorrow.

SBU faculty protests lack of union contract amid hiring freeze

BY KYLE BARR Faculty members at a local college say 20 months is too long to go without a contract.

More than 50 Stony Brook University staff, faculty members and students met in a rally March 1 to support the faculty union in contract negotiations with The State University of New York that have been prolonged for close to two years.

“This is a rally to try and show solidarity toward negotiating a fair and reasonable contract,” United University Professions union Chapter President Kevin Moriarty said. “We have been 20 months without a contract, and we don’t feel like we’re being dealt with fairly to negotiate a fair contract with us.”

The group marched from Stony Brook University Hospital onto the main campus, up and down the academic mall and finished at the fountain outside the administration building. The main demands from UUP to SUNY is for paid family leave, a stepped increase in salary, better job security, keeping health care copays from increasing, and more security for adjuncts and other contingent faculty.

The UUP union hosted rallies in SUNY colleges across New York state. Moriarty said that while other faculty unions already had their contracts, UUP only had one meeting in February.

“One meeting in an entire month is not negotiating,” he said.

worked for the university since 1985. She said she has a bone to pick when it comes to paid family leave.

“This was years ago, but I wasn’t going to get leave when I gave birth to my daughter,” Gurevitch said. “The only reason I got leave was because I had a cesarean and got medical leave. I adopted a son and didn’t get any family leave. The university needs to become proactive with family leave.”

UUP President Fred Kowal joined the march at Stony Brook. He said that part of the reason why the contract has taken so long was because of a new SUNY chancellor, Kristina Johnson, being brought in last year, and the administrative changeover has resulted in some delays.

“The last contract among the unions, there was a lot of givebacks,” Kowal said.

“We know it was tough times in the state, but this time around we want the increases that reflect the work we’re doing, and they’re in line with what other unions have got already. We don’t want to bankrupt the state or the university, but it’s fair addressing longstanding concerns.”

The prolonged contract negotiations have come parallel to a host of other problems faculty have faced the past two years. Because of a $35 million shortage in the school’s budget, last year several arts and sciences departments were either consolidated or were cut, and several full-time professors lost tenure while many nontenured track teaching

Writing adjunct Steven Dube has been protesting Stony Brook’s cuts to adjuncts since 2017. He has seen several of his coworkers lose their jobs because of cuts to the writing department.

“Faculty are demoralized, and one of the excuses they gave last year for a bunch of the cuts was that they were going to be hiring more full-time people, so this really shows their hypocrisy, and that we’ve been misled by the administration,” Dube said. “I think we would like to hear more specific things from the administration as to what’s actually happening on campus.”

The same day as the planned rally, SBU President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. announced that Stony Brook would initiate a hiring freeze to try and stem the financial woes the university is currently experiencing. Stanley said in a video posted to the SBU website that the reason for the hiring freeze is an $18 million shortfall in the budget due to contractual salary increases made before the current contract negotiations. He said New York State is no longer required to pay for salary increases, and that tuition increases do not cover the shortfall.

“This is going to be a difficult thing for us, because if you’re doing 100 percent of a job, and then they ask you to do 150 percent of the job, it’s either going to be physically impossible … or it’s going to warrant additional compensation,” Moriarty said.

Three Village Central School District’s Ward Melville High School Science Olympiad team recently captured first place at the Long Island Regional Science Olympiad Tournament and has now qualified to compete in the New York State Science

Olympiad Tournament in March.

During the regional contest, which was held at Ward Melville High School, more than 700 students from throughout the area showcased their scientific knowledge in a series of events. These included such

student council met with bank representatives to learn about the program and the importance of establishing a pattern of saving. Each student was presented with a blue plastic piggy bank and a shinny new penny.

The bank made a donation to the school’s PTA as part of the challenge, and the student who finds the oldest penny over the next month will earn a separate prize.

During their class time, the students previewed five different books and completed a tasting menu with their initial reactions of the piece. The stories they previewed included John Steinbeck’s “The Red Pony,” Paul Zindel’s “The Pigman,” Cameron Stracher’s “The Water Wars,” Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom

Sawyer” and Celia Rees’ “Witch Child.”

In the menus, the students shared what they thought of the books and how the authors worked to hook readers from the start before giving the piece a ranking of one through five.

In the coming weeks, Hanczor will be creating literature circles based on the students’ expressed interest in the previewed books, and those groups will work on an interdisciplinary project to create a book trailer for their chosen story.

Skewering federal government’s offshore drilling plan

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM If it wasn’t clear following six hours of Valentine’s Day testimony, the usual suspects were at it once again delivering a unified message against the possibility of offshore drilling in the Atlantic Ocean.

Representatives from the U.S. Department of the Interior were at Brookhaven Town Hall March 2 to hear public comments from lawmakers across the political spectrum demand the proposed federal plan to expand natural gas and oil drilling along coastal waters be scrapped. The Feb. 14 hearing, which did not feature participation by the Interior, was held in the Suffolk County Legislature building in Hauppauge, an alternative to the federal bureau’s original plan for a single public hearing in Albany that took place the next day.

Long Island lawmakers vehemently pushed back on the single upstate hearing, demanding at least one downstate hearing due to the impact such a plan might have locally.

Though the Interior Department didn’t hear the first batch of testimony on Long Island in February, Assemblyman and Committee on Environmental Conservation Chairman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) said a transcript of the entire meeting would be submitted as written public comment on the proposal. Neither of the two local

First District U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (RShirley) played a vital role in securing the March 2 hearing in his home district, calling the initial one-Albany-hearing plan “unacceptable.”

Zeldin and others reiterated the fact that there currently is no evidence to suggest the resources that would be drilled for exist off the coast of Long Island, in addition to the hazardous impact the plan would have on marine life. The congressman stopped short of joining lawmakers to his political left in calling for investment in renewable sources of energy as opposed to more drilling for oil and gas, though he has voted for such legislation in the past.

“Drilling in the ocean for gas or oil is foolhardy,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said during his remarks.

“We should be looking at alternative energy.

This is not a Republican or Democrat issue — it’s a common sense issue.”

In a Jan. 4 announcement, Ryan Zinke, Secretary of the Interior, said developing resources on the Outer Continental Shelf would provide billions of dollars to fund conservation of coastlines, public land and parks.

“The important thing is we strike the right balance to protect our coasts and peo-

The senior made up for lost time in the Patriots swim team’s 200-yard medley relay’s first place finish in the state championships at Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow March 3. Ward Melville clocked in at 1 minute, 33.79 seconds to finish just ahead of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (1:34.03).

“I had to catch up from third, and I didn’t take a single breath because I was so excited,” Kubik said. “I was a little off my split [time] from yesterday, but I still felt great.”

The quartet, also made up of seniors David He, Ryan Kaplan and Luka Zuric just missed the state record by 37 hundredths of a second, set last year by St. Anthony’s.

“It wasn’t a great split,” said He, who raced the second leg, or breaststroke. “I wasn’t really thinking, because there was

Louser has his sights set a little higher for his senior season, especially in individual medley, being he was so close to breaking the state record.

“I have another year to go for that,” he said, laughing.

The junior is one of three Top 5 returnees in his two events combined. His head coach is looking forward to seeing what her swimmer can do next.

“He’s so dedicated to the sport, and so are his parents — he comes here to East Meadow every day for practice,” Canard said. “I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people.”

Zuric, who swam the third leg, got a little off pace after forgetting to breathe on his first lap, so Kubik made up for it by holding his. Ward Melville head coach Chris Gordon said he was confident in his relay team, knowing its second-half abilities.

He was happy to see his seniors pull out a win in their final meet.

“I knew a couple of the other schools had a stronger backstroker and breaststroker combination, Hauppauge in particular, but I knew our second half was really, really strong,” Gordon said. “Luka and Cameron swam unbelievable. I was happy because we were ahead of our pace yesterday. I had so much faith in these guys.”

Zuric finished third in the 100 butterfly (50.26) and Comsewogue sophomore Jake Vecchio ended the race in fifth (51.15).

Hauppauge’s Trenton Burr made it to third in the 100 backstroke (50.49) and Zuric placed sixth (51.55). The Northport 200 freestyle relay team of Zachary Papsco, Nicholas Millkey, Ethan Greenfield and Dylan Karpf claimed sixth place in 1:27.33.

Shoreham-Wading River junior Jason Louser, on the other hand, has a reason to love his home pool a little more these days.

He was one of three two-time individual state champions, earning co-most outstanding swimmer award honors and All-American nods in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

“He has so much potential, and what we’ve seen today is just the tip of the iceberg,” Louser’s coach Kate Canard said.

“He’s very humble and he’s very kind, so that speaks volumes. When he wins, he’s a nice person.”

The Women’s March Youth EMPOWER is encouraging students and more to participate in a March 14 walkout.

Students deserve to be heard

There is no denying the Florida school shooting has reignited a national discussion on appropriate firearm regulations and mental health issues. Amid the uproar, students are organizing in attempt to make their voices heard — and we firmly believe they deserve to be at the forefront of this conversation.

The Women’s March Youth EMPOWER has put out the call for students, teachers, school administrators and parents to participate in a national school walkout Wednesday, March 14, at 10 a.m. The event calls for students to walk outside of their school building for 17 minutes, one minute for each of victims killed in Parkland, in a unified effort to show students demand action from Congress in passing federal gun regulations.

Commack resident Paul Guttenberg, whose niece Jaime was killed in the Parkland shooting, voiced support for the student walkout.

“It keeps the issue of how high school students feel about gun violence in the news, and will also send the message that our children’s voices do count,” he said. “And the tone-deaf GOP politicians in Congress will be forced to listen to how they feel.”

The reaction of Long Island’s school districts to the walkout wildly varies and, in some cases, is disappointing. We applaud Ward Melville High School Principal Alan Baum for sitting down with student organizers in his district to discuss plans and ensure safety.

If the point of education is to prepare our children for life, and to become civic-minded adults, Baum’s action should serve as an example for other districts.

Brenden Cusack, principal at Huntington High School, has used the walkout as an opportunity to arrange a March 13 forum where students, teachers and the community can engage in respectful dialogue on mass shootings.

It is disappointing that other districts like Rocky Point have issued warnings that administrative action will be taken in response to any student participating in the walkout. The event is an effort to cry out for attention, where the district’s planned moment of silence is just that, silence, and a letter-writing campaign is too easily ignored. This decision by school administrators strangles students’ voices, making someone think twice before expressing an opinion.

Worse are those school officials who have decided to bury their heads in the sand and not publicly address the walkout. Elwood and Harborfields have not yet issued public statements regarding how their districts will handle the event. This leaves both students and parents with numerous unanswered questions. With a little less than a week until walkout day, we strongly encourage school officials to reconsider an open and honest dialogue.

The first step to solving a problem starts with discussion of the issues.

Students have every right to be heard, for it’s their safety at risk.

OLLI members hit by SBU parking fees Stony Brook University’s President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr.’s good news letter in an ad in the March 1 The Village Times Herald contained much that was positive.

However, beneath the surface management challenges face SBU, including a major budget shortfall and skepticism of many in faculty and elsewhere regarding management’s fitness for purpose.

The issue of fired adjunct professors raises legitimate questions on what guides cost-cutting decisions and a huge number of distinguished professors have recently written with their concerns to The State University of New York chancellor. A parochial matter of much less import but nevertheless significant to our local community is the one affecting 1,000 members of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the popular continuing education organization.

On Jan. 9 the university announced it was withdrawing free parking for OLLI effective July 31. The additional fee burden

this represents brings viability of membership into question as we are thrown into the greedy hands of the parking concession company that controls the only paid parking on site.

Little or no rational justification for this move has been given by university management. Stanley seems to imply an ongoing welcome for community members attending classes but OLLI members neither need, want nor are able to live on campus so we are left to wonder about the meaning of that welcome in an area where public transport is not an option.

The SUNY system has a majority 54 percent of its 1.3 million students enrolled in continuing education or community outreach programs like OLLI. Not free riders or an afterthought, rather it seems Stanley that we grunters are part of your mission — at least according to the SUNY website.

In conclusion: • Have present and predecessor administrations bitten off more

than they can chew?

• If there really is insufficient faculty parking, why? Did all those experts pursuing dreams of research greatness imagine we would all ride bikes?

• Only 58.4 percent of students, “a record high” according to Stanley’s letter, in four years obtaining an undergraduate degree still seems pretty poor to me by world standards so do we need better focus on narrowed objectives?

• What are your priorities Dr. Stanley and is your vision at odds with needs of the local and New York state community? There are plenty of other fine research institutions here whose sole mission is research. Perhaps, building research empires, along with endless capital improvements, hinder the main task of graduating students in less time for less money — and looking after your local community along the way?

A plea to Lee Zeldin from a supporter Over several years, I have been an occasional contributor to this forum and have been a weekly subscriber for more years than I can remember.

Mostly, I have been a responder to many left-wing writers for which I have opposing views. I have often been described as a right-wing zealot by my political opponents and a pathfinder by those who support my views.

Why do I preface my remarks by the above comments? You see, I have in the past been an ardent supporter of Congressman Lee Zeldin. I truly believe he is an honest man, a good representative for the ideals of this district and has not been

deserving of the harsh criticism from some of the writers within this venue, especially regarding his support of Israel.

While being an ardent supporter of the First and Second Amendments, I find it increasingly difficult to support the positions of Mr. Zeldin in light of Sandy Hook, Orlando and most recently Parkland, Florida.

I have never owned a gun and only fired one when I served in the U.S. Army. I have no desire to own a gun but I respect the rights of an American citizen who legally wishes to own one.

However, there is no place within our society for ownership of an assault rifle. To what end, I

ask? Hunting and home ownership protection have no need for these weapons. Their only place is within the military.

Therefore, I can only deduce that Congressman Zeldin is beholden to the National Rifle Association because of the financial support they afford to him. To that end I must state emphatically that unless he changes his position in the very near future, I can never again support his re-election. Please, Congressman Zeldin, do the right thing and publicly denounce your support of NRA positions regarding assault-type weapons.

Heartfelt condolences for Florida victims Not being directly connected to the Stoneman Douglas school shooting, one can only imagine the grief, hurt and anger felt by those who lost loved ones, and the emotional distress sensed by those who were witness to this horrific tragedy, but lucky enough to get out safely. At times like this, one might think about what they

would do if, God forbid, they were in a similar situation. I believe the first reaction, for most, knowing that seconds count and sensing their own mortality, would be to look for cover or a way to get out, dial 911, and if possible help anyone nearby. I cannot speak for others, but the next thing I would do is pray to God that my family

knew how much I loved them and that someone else in the building, braver than I, would have a gun and be a damn good shot.

My heartfelt condolences go out to all suffering through this heinous event. May they find the help that is needed to start healing.

f parts of the body could talk, I wonder what they’d say. To that end, I imagined the following dialogue among mostly facial features.

Teeth: Hey, look at me. Something’s changed. You’re going to like it.

Ears: What? You’re talking again?

Seriously. Can’t you give it a rest, just for a few moments? Here’s a news flash: You don’t have to eat crunchy food all the time. How about eating something soft once in a while?

Teeth: Crunchy food tastes good.

Teeth: Wait, guys. Come on, I want to tell you something. You’re going to like it.

Ears: Oh, please. Are you going to tell us that you have a few more thoughts you’d like to share about a way to smile so we look better in selfies? Forget it. Haven’t you heard?

Your daughter said you’re incapable of taking a good selfie. She’s probably right. Selfie’s were made for people much younger than we are. They’re a tool to even out the generational power struggle.

Cheeks: We’re as young as we feel, right?

Eyes: Have you looked in the mirror lately? Cheeks, you’re showing our age.

Cheeks: Wait, what’s wrong with me?

Eyes: Nothing’s wrong. It’s just that gravity seems to have caught up with you.

Chin: Gravity, that’s funny.

Eyes: You haven’t looked in the mirror either, have you chin?

Chin: Why? Eyes: Are you trying to clone yourself?

Nose: Ignore them, cheeks and chin. They’re just jealous.

Eyes: Jealous? What? Let’s just say that the new hairs coming out of you, my little nose friend, aren’t winning admirers.

Nose: Hairs? Where?

Ears: Can we keep it down? I’m trying to enjoy the few moments of silence before the phone rings or someone else has to share thoughts about a better way to do something.

Eyes: We noticed the extra hairs growing on you, too, ears.

Ears: You’re in a bad mood today,

Eyes: Nothing.

Teeth: No, you can tell us.

Eyes: I need to wear close glasses for the computer and distance glasses for driving. I hate having two pairs and it takes me a minute to adjust.

Nose: Tell me about it. The computer glasses are pinching me.

Ears: Yeah, and they’re irritating me, too.

Teeth: Come on. I have something to say.

Ears; Of course you do. That’s all you do. Blah, blah, blah. Would it hurt you to listen?

Teeth: I am part of the mouth, you know. That’s what I do.

Ears: Yes, but silence can be good for all of us, you know?

Eyes: OK, tell us this important news that you’re so eager to share.

Teeth: After all these years, my teeth are straight. See? My smile isn’t crooked anymore.

Eyes: Let me see.

Teeth: Aah. Eyes: Hmm, they are straighter.

What do you know? Now, what can you do about your breath?

also occurred to us that no one has had to get up early to walk the dog on the weekends. We haven’t had to go out in the wind and rain, or the cold and dark for that last walk of the night. There were no elaborate plans that needed to be made for dog care when we left for vacation or a weekend away from home. We didn’t need to dash to the vet for an emerging “hot spot” or note the time on the calendar for a rabies shot. There has not been any sudden despoiling on the most treasured rug in the house.

And we have not had to deal with the frantic teething that puts clothing and window sills at risk as a new puppy settles in.

We have thought briefly of different possibilities. We have a friend who has a golden retriever puppy named Chewy with almost identical coloring and inquisitiveness as Teddy, and we have offered our services as sometime babysitters. So far we have done so once. After loving up the pup, the rest was just work and it wasn’t the same.

Substitute dogs are like substitute

teachers: Happy to have them come and happy to see them go.

It has been 45 years since I have been without a dog in the house, and there is a void that won’t go away. One of my sons and daughters-in-law are thinking of getting a dog. If so, they would come often to visit and bring the dog. Would that replace what is missing? I have my doubts. That would just mean more work without the primary connection.

So profound is that connection that the latest trend in employee benefits for large corporations is “pawternity leave.” That means a couple of days paid time off for an employee to bond with a new four-legged family member or to mourn the death of a beloved pet. Some companies are even encouraging their staffers to bring their pets with them to the office when at work.

So, will we get another dog? There have been four dogs sequentially in my life already, and there is certainly room for more. I just don’t know if l can bear the loss of yet another. As my mother used to say, “We’ll see.”

eople sometimes ask me if I am going to get another dog. Even people I don’t really know have stopped me in the supermarket or the post office to ask. They know about my dog, Teddy, since I have written about him, described his antics and, at the end, the pain of losing him.

Those who ask probably have pets of their own, and they understand the deep relationship we humans have with our

By Leah S. Dunaief animals. They also know what is coming for them because beloved pets die. We are lucky if they keep us company on our journey through life for a decade and a half. And we mourn them as we would mourn the death of any beloved family member.

Between you and me

Initially we wouldn’t consider replacing him. Every night, when we arrived home and opened the front door there was no four-legged furry bundle fishtailing with joy to welcome us.

The house was just dark and empty.

We needed time to grieve. “Just get another dog,” said those who didn’t understand that dogs are not like widgets, one replaceable with another.

So we went through the spring and didn’t see him sniffing at the crocuses and daffodils as if in wonder at how they had gotten there. After all, they hadn’t been there yesterday. In summer, he wasn’t here to dash across the sand and fling himself into the water for an instant cool-down. As the fall came and the beach grass turned russet and gold, he did not run happily along the beach with us, perfectly camouflaged by nature’s backdrop.

And this winter, with the first snow, he was not here to roll ecstatically on his back and make snow angels on the front lawn.

It’s coming up on a year now since we have been without a dog. It has
