On Feb. 15, the Indivisible Patriots of Long Island will host a Meet the Candidates Night with the seven challengers preparing to run in the Democratic Primary in Congressional District 1. Candidates will respond to questions and attendees will have the opportunity to meet and speak with individual candidates.

“We want to offer an opportunity for voters to see and hear all the candidates and also to interact with them in a casual setting,” said Vincent Geary, leader of Indivisible Patriots.

The seven candidates in the running to represent the district as the Democratic Party candidate for Congress are David Pechefsky, Bruce G. Miller, Brendon Henry, Perry Gershon, Vivian Viloria-Fisher, Elaine DiMasi and Kate Browning.

On March 6, the candidates will begin collecting signatures to get their names on the primary ballot. Each candidate must obtain a minimum of 1,250 signatures of registered Democrats. Each registered Democrat may sign only one petition. Signing more than one invalidates both signatures.

congressional candidate in the June 26 primary. The winning candidate will challenge incumbent Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) in the November general election to determine who will represent CD1 in Congress.

VILLAGE Three Village gears up for prekindergarten enrollment

It may only be February, but the Three Village Central School District has already announced plans for the upcoming year’s program for its youngest learners.

At a recent meeting, the school board received both an update on the inaugural year of the district’s prekindergarten and plans for the program during the 20182019 school year. The presentation, delivered by Nassakeag Elementary School assistant principal and prekindergarten coordinator Nancy Pickford, covered the curriculum and other highlights of the free prekindergarten program.

The prekindergarten, which is located at Nassakeag Elementary School, “supports students’ cognitive and social and emotional learning” and includes foundational language, math and technological skills features, Pickford said.

The curriculum, which is designed by Three Village educators, is age-appropriate, meets New York State standards and prepares students for kindergarten in the Three Village district, Pickford said. Learning is play-based, and students benefit from individual, small and large group instruction and activities.

Pickford also explained that students are placed in classes according to the elementary school they will attend for kindergarten, ensuring that they can begin to

establish friendships as they continue in the district. She also noted that the prekindergarten program provides an opportunity for educators to evaluate students and identify the need for early intervention services.

While the program has a separate entrance with a security guard and its own playground, prekindergarten students have access to the school’s library, mini-gym and school nurse. They also participate in cultural arts programs, school-wide musical performances and PTA-sponsored events at Nassakeag. Class buddies from the elementary grades also read to prekindergartners and do projects with them, Pickford said.

“The pre-K has brought an element of wonder and excitement to Nassakeag, and the entire building has embraced our youngest students,” she said Parents receive midyear and end-of-year progress reports and attend parent-teacher conferences. Responses to parent surveys have been overwhelmingly positive and indicate that families are pleased with the program, Pickford said. Administrators, though, will track the students through kindergarten to gauge the effectiveness of the program, she said. Looking ahead, the district plans to install a grant-funded, outdoor classroom.

There are currently seven half-day sections which meet from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and noon to 2:30 p.m. Start and end times are staggered to avoid congestion with the arrivals and departures of the elementary

school students, Pickford said.

Enrollment for the new year begins on Feb. 26. Pickford, who anticipates an enrollment increase, said that if the number goes above the 200-student cap, there will be a lottery for spots.

Firehouse construction to continue throughout year The headquarters of the Setauket Fire Department continues to transition into a rescue center for the 21st century with its construction project dubbed by the department as “new era.”

David Sterne, district manager, said a new apparatus bay on Old Town Road is now completed and ready to use. The structure connected to the original firehouse on Route 25A can fit modern day trucks, something the 1930s building couldn’t do. The closed cabs of current fire trucks make them much wider than emergency vehicles used in earlier decades. Trucks will also now exit and enter on the Old Town Road side instead of Route 25A. Sterne said the new entranceway has a bigger driveway apron, which provides safer entering and exiting than the old entrance.

After waiting nearly a decade for a bond approval, a $14.9 million bond was approved in April 2014, and renovations began on the Main Street firehouse June 4, 2016. Sterne said the approval of the bond in 2014 was due to a collaboration of the fire district, fire department, community members and the Three Village Civic Association discussing the needs of both the district and its residents.

“It was a community effort to get this passed,” Sterne said. “It is a good example of how things can be accomplished when we are all willing to work together.”

Robert Reuter, president of the Frank Melville Memorial Foundation, was part of a community advisory committee that included Stony Brook architect John Cunniffe and the late civic leader Bob de Zafra. Reuter said the planning for the new firehouse was “an excellent example of the value in involving the public.” He credited Sterne’s organized process and the cooperation of H2M architectural firm and the fire commissioners for making the committee members input meaningful.

Reuter said the committee advocated for reuse of the existing firehouse on Route 25A, the continuation of brick as the primary building material and landscaping the southeast corner, which will include trees and

other plantings.

“It will be good to see that work take shape now that the firehouse is operating with a new garage and work is underway on the original building,” Reuter said.

The apparatus bay also includes a bail-out window for volunteers to practice mandated drills with life rescue ropes. The structure has a break room and a gear room that is separate from the apparatus bay, making it safer for firefighters to dress for a fire. Sterne said previously volunteers would put on their gear in the bay, which posed potential hazards with trucks in the vicinity.

South of the building a spillover parking lot will be available for when a large number of volunteers respond to an emergency,

attend a meeting or community members use the facilities.

When the new bay was completed, work began on the 25A side. Sterne said the facade of the western portion of the Main Street building, the original 1935 structure, will remain the same, and there will be bunkrooms for both male and female firefighters.

The eastern section of the old building will be replaced with a two-story structure that includes offices, meeting and training rooms.

With the future in mind, Sterne said the construction fits the needs of the fire district while being environmentally friendly. Solar panels will be used for hot water, a white high-efficiency roof is included in the apparatus bay, and there will a high-efficiency cooling system.

“I think everyone understands the importance of building for the future in a responsible manner,” Sterne said. “We felt that it is important to have an efficient building … efficient in the sense of being environmentally responsible, as well as a more cost-effective, fiscally efficient building to operate. Building a building that will be kinder to the environment for years to come and costs less tax dollars to operate was imperative to us … the whole community.”

Sterne said the goal is for the firehouse to be completed by November 2018, and the fire district plans to commemorate the completion of the project with a ribbon cutting ceremony and community celebration.

Narcan training vital in saving lives from overdoses The best defense is a good offense — which is why training civilians to administer naloxone has become critical in the fight against opioids.

To also aid in the battle, the dosage of Narcan, a brand name version of naloxone, has been doubled and the dilution decreased to be strong enough to reverse an overdose.

Because opioids block a brain’s receptors, while an overdose is occurring, your brain is telling your body it’s all right to stop breathing.

For every minute that oxygen is blocked from reaching the brain’s stem cells, 10 percent of the matter dies. For example, if a person is without oxygen for say, five minutes, 50 percent of the brain’s stem cells die, a near-impossible scenario to survive.

“You play a very, very critical role in saving lives,” Chief Deputy County EMS Coordinator Karl Klug told the 323rd Narcan training class at Sound Beach Fire Department Feb. 12.

“When someone is overdosing and no longer breathing, the window is closing quickly. It takes time for first responders to get to the scene, which is why citizens matter.”

Even though the 46-year volunteer firefighter and current professor said Narcan has been around since 1975, the usage has become so common that there’s a national back order. According to the Suffolk County

New naloxone kits have two doses of 4 mg of Narcan, in a new nasal spray device.

Department of Health Services Division of Emergency Medical Services, reported overdose reversals have gone from 325 in 2012 to 542 in 2015 and 736 in 2016, more than doubling in a five-year span.

“The key word here is reported,” Klug said.

“The numbers are already absolutely frightening and age is no barrier whatsoever, but we expect those numbers to be even higher.”

Despite access to Narcan, 141 opioidrelated deaths were reported in 2010 in Suffolk County, 258 in 2015 and 340 in 2016.

The number of recurrences is also alarming.

Of the 736 reversals reported in 2016, 184, or 25 percent, of those people received two

doses, in many cases, as a result of a patient returning to the hospital after a second overdose in the same day.

“It’s like a tsunami, and I feel like I’m holding an umbrella,” said Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai), who worked with the Sound Beach Civic Association to host the training session. She said the county is currently working on using asset forfeiture funds to purchase devices that screen a person for drugs, similar to a breathalyzer, that police officers will carry.

To those who are afraid to help or get involved in calling for help, Klug pointed to the good Samaritan law that provides basic legal

protection for those who assist a person who is injured or in danger. In essence, the law protects a person from liability if unintended consequences result from their assistance.

A new, deadlier variety of opioid is now plaguing communities. Carfentanil is 10,000 times stronger than morphine, and 100 times stronger than fentanyl, and can be laced in heroin at a $10 to $20 cost.

In determining whether or not a person is overdosing, Klug said to first check a person’s breathing. If it’s slowed, check responsiveness by tilting his or her head back to see if it drops forward or squeeze his or her triceps to see if they react. If still unresponsive, check for bilateral constricted pupils, or ones that are “pinpoint sized,” or blue coloring in lips and fingernails. If it’s hard to tell, check the coloring inside the mouth and eyelids. If a person’s breathing stops, or he or she is gasping for air, Narcan should be administered immediately and CPR with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation performed. Getting oxygen to the brain is most important, and turning a person on his or her side helps keep the airway passages open and prevents aspiration in the lungs, like with vomit.

Anyone worried about knowing whether or not to administer Narcan, the drug is inert to anything except opioids: heroin, codeine, morphine and oxycodone, among others.

“There’s no harm, no foul,” Klug said. “It’s better to try, because every second counts.”

Residents worry about aesthetics, effect on property values



Concerns voiced over possible health risks to villagers

The Keeper’s Cottage was filled to capacity Feb. 13 with residents and bordering neighbors expressing concerns over the proposed installation of a cellphone tower at Kaltenborn Commons, a small park located at the intersection of Old Field Road and Quaker Path and surrounded by homes. This is the second time both residents and nonresidents had the opportunity to speak and ask questions about the tower; the first opportunity being at a Jan. 9 public meeting.

A board vote to approve signing a lease with telecommunications tower site developer Elite Towers was not held during the meeting. Mayor Michael Levine said with the upcoming March 20 village elections, two new trustees would be starting in April, and the board agreed the new members should weigh in on the decision.

Former board member John Von Lintig, who lives directly across from the park, presented a petition signed by 100 residents who are against the installation of the cell tower.

“The opposition of the cellphone tower, or pole as you call it, is primarily based on aesthetic reasons, which tie very closely to the impact on real estate immediately in

the vicinity of the tower,” Von Lintig said.

He cited the National Institute for Science, Law & Public Policy’s survey of 1,000 respondents on the impact of cell towers and antennas on real estate properties. He said according to the survey, 94 percent responded that cellphone towers or antennas in a neighborhood would impact their interest in a property and the price they would pay. Von Lintig said 79 percent answering the survey said under no circumstances would they buy a home within a few blocks from a tower or antenna. He said the decline of real estate prices can be anywhere between 2 and 20 percent.

John Damianos said when the land was granted to the village by Hans V. Kaltenborn in 1950 it was meant to be used for recreational purposes. He said the addition of the pole would turn it into a commercial facility.

“When I moved here there were many naturalists and environmentalists,” Damianos said. “A lot of people talked about Flax Pond and other places. They were strongly in favor of preserving natural spaces, open spaces, including this one.”

Jeff Schnee, who recently attended a board of trustees work session to discuss the technologic alternatives to a tower, said a better solution would be using distributed antenna systems. He said there is one in front of Ward Melville High School, and it consists of a 14- to 15-foot microwave antenna and a controlling box. “[The phone companies] can put that in our neighborhood about every 20 poles in the areas that need it and that’s not intrusive,” Schnee said. “You don’t have to look at it, it doesn’t put out much power.”

Schnee asked if a cellphone tower was necessary with 5G technology, which uses millimeter waves and not microwaves, on the horizon. He said the technology uses receivers and transmitters, which would be every cellphone, Wi-Fi-enabled car and cable box. He said an area such as Old Field, where people buy the latest technology, would be perfect for 5G, and it’s possible it

might be available in 2020.

Deputy Mayor Stephen Shybunko said after further research the board found that 5G would not replace 4G entirely as 5G does not penetrate walls and windows and therefore would not work well for voice transmission. Schnee said he believes more research needs to be done and said the debate on the potential of 5G could lead to the formation of a committee of residents who could research the topic before a decision is made about the tower.

Physicist Oleg Gang said a committee would be ideal to also research potential health risks. The scientist handed out a sheet with a list of studies regarding the effects of cell towers on health. Gang showed a meter he used recently when near a comparable tower in Belle Terre. He said the measurements of radio frequency power near the tower — 100 feet to 0.3 mile — indicate RF radiation levels a few times higher than holding a cellphone to one’s ear 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Board members said they would be open to a committee comprised of Old Field residents. Levine reiterated what was covered at the last board meeting, that the

lighthouse is not an option for the Village of Old Field to install a cellphone tower as the U.S. Coast Guard has not given approval. Also, if the village decides not to install a pole, there is still a chance that Stony Brook University will do so on its Sunwood Estate property as the university has filed a request for proposals to install a cellphone tower. If this occurs, the village would not have a say as to where the university installs it on the property and would not generate any revenue from the SBU pole.

Many residents in attendance said they would rather not have better cellphone service, or any service at all, if it negatively affects them and their neighbors in Setauket.

“I would rather pay higher taxes than shaft my neighbors down the road a mile and a half,” one resident said.

After the meeting, Von Lintig said he was optimistic and believed it makes sense to involve new board members in the process.

“As a former village trustee knowing most of the current members well, I believe they will take these concerns under serious consideration and do the right thing to preserve the bucolic nature of our village,” Von Lintig said.

A 58-year-old man from Port Jefferson allegedly accepted payment from a homeowner on Cambridge Drive in Port Jefferson Station Dec. 24 under the false pretense of fixing the home’s hot water heater, according to police. The hot water heater was never fixed, police said. The man was arrested Feb. 9 and charged with petit larceny.

During the course of an investigation, a police officer conducting surveillance on Tyler Avenue in Miller Place observed a 36-yearold man from Patchogue allegedly making a transaction consistent with drug dealing with another person at about 4:30 p.m. Feb. 7, according to police. The man also possessed a gravity knife, cash and multiple cellphones, police said. He was arrested and charged with loitering for the purpose of unlawfully using a controlled substance and fourthdegree criminal possession of a weapon.

A 19-year-old man from Centereach was driving a 2013 Honda north on South Washington Avenue in Centereach at about 10 a.m.

Feb. 9 when he was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to police. Police said he was allegedly knowingly driving with a suspended license, after having it suspended previously on at least three other occasions. He also allegedly possessed heroin, MDMA and cocaine, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and three counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Tires stolen

At Steven’s Ford on Route 112 in Patchogue, a 27-year-old man from Medford allegedly stole five sets of tires and rims off of five different vehicles at about 11 p.m. Jan. 15, according to police. In an unrelated incident, he also allegedly punched another man in the face while at a home in Medford Feb. 7 at about 5:30 a.m., police said. He was arrested Feb. 10 in Selden and charged with third-degree grand larceny and third-degree assault.

At Popei’s Clam Bar on Middle Country Road in Coram Jan. 13 at about 10:30 p.m., a 47-year-old man from Yaphank allegedly punched another man in the face and stomped on his face with his foot, according to police. He was arrested Feb. 6 in Selden and charged with third-degree assault. The victim required medical treatment, police said.

Medication with no prescription

A 25-year-old man from Central Islip allegedly possessed white pills without a prescription during a traffic stop on North Ocean Avenue in Farmingville Feb. 5 at about 8 p.m., according to police. He was arrested in Selden on Feb. 6 and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Wallet stolen

Someone stole a Michael Kors wallet containing cash, a license and credit cards from Lulu’s Nail Salon on Route 25A in Mount Sinai Feb. 11 at about 5 p.m., according to police.

Shoplifting

Nine HP toner cartridges were stolen from Staples on Nesconset Highway in Terryville Feb. 10 at about 12:30 p.m., according to police.

Home break-in

The front door of a home on Dorothy Street in Port Jefferson Station was broken at about 7 p.m. Feb. 8, and jewelry, cash, three iPads and several credit cards were stolen from the home, according to police.

Package missing

A FedEx package containing computer parts was stolen from in front of a home on Harbor Beach Road in Miller Place Feb. 7 at about 5 p.m., according to police.

Money stolen from home

Between Oct. 17 and Nov. 17, a 51-year-old man from Port Jefferson allegedly stole money totaling more than $1,000 from a man living on East Woodside Avenue in East Patchogue, according to police. He was arrested Feb. 7 and charged with fourthdegree grand larceny.

OBITUARIES Alyse Green

Alyse Green, of Setauket, died Jan. 8.

Born in Yonkers, New York, July 27, 1941, to Henry (Hank) and Helen Grack, she was the sister of Helen, who predeceased her this past year, and Ken. Alyse grew up in Roosevelt and went to Freeport High School. She married Frank in 1959. They lived in Hicksville and had three kids Jimmy, Beth and Russ. Two years after Russ was born they moved to Setauket where they lived for the rest of their lives in the same house for 46 years on Thornwood Way. They ran a successful family business — Armor Pest Control, which continues to thrive today. Alyse was president of the Three Village Garden Club, taught Sunday school at Setauket United Methodist Church and worked at Swezey’s Department Store.

She and Frank were members of the Stony Brook Yacht Club, and they later belonged to the St. George’s Golf and Country Club.

Frank’s mother, Rita, affectionately known as Grandma “Chips,” who passed away recently, lived with them in her own apartment. They spent many years traveling to their vacation home in their beloved Vermont.

Alyse had a sense of humor and light approach to life that we can all learn from.

She loved the arts, jazz, Broadway, the ballet at Lincoln Center, the Rockettes and her twist of lemon on her wine glass at Michael Jordan’s The Steak House N.Y.C. in Grand Central Station. She loved New York City.

In addition to her children, Alyse is survived by her four grandchildren, Michael, Julie, Jimmy Jr. and Bobby; and one greatgrandson who was born in the same hospital the day before she passed.

Alyse’s whole hearted embrace of life, her tenacity, her laughter and smile will be echoed through the streets and harbors, shops and cafes of Three Village and Port Jeff and on the breezes meandering their way through the mountains and valleys, rivers and streams of Vermont. She will live on, vibrantly and consciously, each and every day in every cell of our being.

Mary Lou ‘Nicki’ Skillman

Longtime Setauket resident Mary Lou “Nicki” Skillman, 86, died peacefully in Boca Raton, Florida Jan. 19.

Nicki was born in Madison, New Jersey and graduated from Madison High School, having been a cheerleader and member of the girls basketball team.

Even in later stages of Alzheimer’s, she remembered the words to many of her high school cheers. Basketball was always a love, and she frequently interrupted her sons’ games on the driveway to practice her free throws.

She married Jim Skillman in 1958, and they moved to Setauket in 1976. She was a former board president and longtime active member of the Three Village Tennis Club, where she treasured her time on the doubles court with her many friends there

and was made a lifetime member in recognition for her service.

She was also a devoted member of Saint James R.C. Church and Infant Jesus Church in Port Jefferson. Well into middle age, she was known to “crash” Infant Jesus’ teen Mass on many Sunday evenings.

She just loved being with her kids and their friends.

For thousands of Three Village school children, she became widely known as the “Swish Lady” for her work with Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine and the local elementary schools.

She is survived by Jim and their five children James Jr., Steve, Susan, Sheryl and Jeffrey; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Nicki was the family party planner and loved to host a crowd — any excuse to get people around the kitchen table or out on the back deck to enjoy each other’s company.

Services were held at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home and Saint Vincent’s R.C. Church in Madison. Contributions may be made to Hope House Ministries in Port Jefferson.

Jessica Marie Cleere-Passarella

Jessica Marie Cleere-Passarella died suddenly Jan. 19.

Jessica is survived by her husband Frank Passarella; her daughter Alyssa; step-children Anton, Alexa and Dominic; father John Cleere; mother Marie and step-father Matt Hassard; brother Tom Cleere and his wife Diane;

nieces Julianna and Ava; sister Rebecca Cleere; step-sister Samantha; and stepbrother Stephen.

Jessica was both physically and spiritually beautiful. She was a loving and generous mother. Her family will always remember the gift of love she gave to all of them and anyone who knew her.

Services were held at Bryant Funeral Home, Jan. 23. Committal services were held in private.

Joseph Murray

Joseph R. Murray, 80, of Stony Brook, died Jan. 31.

He was born June 10, 1937, in Queens to Mary and Peter Murray and was a retired math professor at Farmingdale State College – State University of New York.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons James and Robert; daughter Mary Ellen; nine grandchildren; sister Virginia; along with many other family and friends.

Services were held at St. James R.C. Church Feb. 3. Interment followed at the St. James Churchyard Cemetery.

Former Se-Port Delicatessen owner dies at 85

deli received a “4 Pickle Rating” award (out of a possible four) from the paper, which was the only “4” rating amongst all of the local North Shore delis that were reviewed. He still had the award with him in Texas when he passed away.

Günther and Ingrid are examples of how hard work pays off. Günther truly lived the America Dream, and his family is extremely proud of his accomplishments.

Günther was a man of integrity, a gentleman, and a kind, loving, and devoted father and grandfather. Opa will be missed.

A post-cremation visitation and memorial service is scheduled for Feb. 17 at O.B. Davis Funeral Home, 4839 Nesconset Hwy., Port Jefferson Station. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., and the ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m. followed by additional visitation ending at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Children’s Cancer & Blood Foundation. The family would like to thank The Legacy at Willow Bend in Plano and their caregivers, the Vitas hospice caregivers and the caregivers at The Bristal at East Northport assisted living for their efforts and dedication.

Günther Lützen, former Long Island delicatessen owner and entrepreneur, of Plano, Texas, formerly of East Northport and Coram, died peacefully Jan. 27 at the age of 85.

Günther is survived by his wife Ingrid Lützen of Cape Canaveral, Florida, and their five children and ten grandchildren: Harold Lützen of Taylor, Michigan and his wife Jennifer and their children Sabrina and Thomas; Fred Lützen of Manlius, New York and his wife Nicole and their children Frederick and Riley; Lisa Viscovich of Glen Cove and her husband Gregory and their children Calvin and Emery; Linda Francis of Cutchogue and her children Julia and Samuel and her husband Donald; Stefanie Summers of Celina, Texas and her husband Daniel and their children Günther and Tanner; and by his brother Volkert Lützen of the City of Wyk, Island of Föhr, Germany; and his sister, Christa Storm, of Kayhude, Germany. He is preceded in death by his father Friedrich Christian Lützen, his mother Christina Dorothena [Freiberg], his brother

Friedrich [“Freddy” or “Fiete”] Lützen and his brother Werner Lützen.

Günther was born May 21, 1932, in Wyk on the Island of Föhr, Germany. He has always loved flowers, plants and vegetation, so as a teenager in Germany he studied botany and received a certification in botany at the age of 19.

He moved to the United States in 1951.

He then began his German delicatessen career and his American Dream. After working relentlessly toward his goals, he became a delicatessen and business owner within a few years, and then married Ingrid by the late 1960s, and they started a family together. Günther and Ingrid worked hard in the delicatessen business for years and raised five very proud children.

One of his longer tenures was owning the Se-Port Delicatessen in East Setauket, which he owned for two separate stints through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The Village Times published an article in the 1980s about Günther and his hard work ethic that focused on his success with the Se-Port deli, and the devotion and discipline required of him to operate such a business so successfully. Ryan Himmelsbach, an eighth-grader at Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School, held onto his championship title at the seventh annual Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee. The spelling bee was held Feb. 11 at The Helene Fortunoff Theater at Hofstra University. Ryan, who also won in 2017, will represent Long Island at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland, May 27 through June 1.

Ryan’s winning word was “teleost.” Other words he spelled correctly in the final rounds were “chevalet” and “apoptosis.” The bee went 10 rounds and a little over two hours before Ryan was left as the sole speller on stage and announced as the winner.

First runner-up in the competition was Zekey Huang from Mount Sinai Middle School. Second place runner-up was Sara Ashraf from Hicksville Middle School. Some of the words leading up to the final rounds were “Fomorian,” “pyroclastic,” and “elutriation.”

The regional spelling bee started Feb. 4 with 129 students from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. These students, winners of their local school bees, took the written exam portion of the competition. The 41 students who qualified for the Feb. 11 spelldown scored in the approximate top third of the test takers. The spelldown is the competition where a panel of judges give students words to spell aloud.

Contestants are eliminated when they misspell a word, and the competition continues until one speller remains.

Ryan wasn’t the only spelling pro from the Three Village Central School District. Among the contestants was R.C Murphy Junior High School eighth-grader Alana John and Ryan’s sister Ava Himmelsbach, a fifth-grader in Setauket Elementary School. W.S. Mount Elementary School fourth-grader Ryan Karp qualified for the Feb. 4 written exam portion of the competition but didn’t advance to the spelldown.

Hughes first, 4x800 relay second at state quals Just when Kiera Hughes thought she couldn’t get any better, she did.

The Ward Melville senior hurdler raced 55 meters in a blazing 8.5 seconds, finishing in the top spot at the state qualifier Feb. 12. Her time on the Suffolk County Community College Brentwood track marked

her third personal best of the season and the second time she’s beaten her own school record.

“That’s a huge improvement,” she said, unable to control her excitement and glee.

“I’m over the moon. I just wanted to go to states, that’s my main goal. I wanted to be the best I can be, and I was.”

She had knocked down the 2003 record (8.74) with a time of 8.63 and shaved that down to 8.6 at the league championship last month.

Her Patriots teammates finished second in 4×800 relay with a time of 9:33.38.

Ward Melville seniors Allyson Gaedje, Sam Rutt and Sam Sturgess, and sophomore Elizabeth Radke joined Hughes in qualifying to compete in the state championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island March 3.

Although the quartet competed in the 4×400 at the Millrose Games on Feb. 3 and Suffolk County championship Feb. 4, Ward Melville stretched the distance because head coach Tom Youngs said the group is strong at running longer distances, being that all four runners take part in the cross country season.

“We feel that we have a better chance of going after a state title in the 4×800 as opposed the 4×400,” Youngs said. “Last year we did the double at Millrose Games, but that spread our kids a little too thin, so we

want to focus more on just a single event, which is what we did.”

Gaedje who runs the final leg in both relays, said there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

“I felt a little heavy throughout,” she said. “It wasn’t my best, but I’m happy that we made states and hopefully we can do better there.”

Suffolk gives free shots as flu season rages on locally and nationally

Flu season is hitting harder than usual across the United States this year, and New York has been no exception.

The New York State Department of Health Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report for the week ending Feb. 3, the most recent week available, said it was the ninth consecutive week that “widespread” influenza activity was reported, indicating that a significant number of cases were reported in greater than 31 of the 62 counties. Nearly 16,000 lab-confirmed cases were reported for that week in New York, compared to about 5,300 for the same week in 2017.

More than 1,100 new cases were reported for the same week in Suffolk County, bringing the season-to-date total to 3,301. The total new cases for the week ending Feb. 3 nearly equals the combined numbers for the preceding two weeks. Three influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported in New York so far this season, and 63 nationwide.

A Feb. 9 update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated influenza-like illness reached 7.7 percent, the highest rate since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, or Swine Flu, which peaked at 7.7 percent.

The overall hospitalization rate was higher for the past week than the rate reported for the same week in 2015, a high severity season, according to the CDC. Of the last six flu seasons, the 2017-18 hospitalization rate —

Hospitalization rates have only exceeded 60 per 100,000 people since 2011-12 for nine weeks cumulatively: six weeks in 2014-15 and three weeks in 2016-17. Influenza-like illness has been at or above the national baseline for 11 weeks. During the previous five flu seasons, influenza-like illness remained at or above baseline for 16 weeks on average, meaning the current flu season should be expected to continue for at least the next several weeks.

“I think something that the public tends to forget from year to year is that influenza is a significant health issue,” said Dr. Michael Grosso, the chief medical officer at Hunting-

ton Hospital. “Were this any other kind of infection, we would be rather alarmed as a country. We’re sort of accustomed to the flu.”

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) and Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken announced last week the county is offering free influenza immunization to residents following Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) declaration of a statewide public health emergency.

“The health and wellness of our residents is of utmost importance,” Bellone said in a statement, also thanking Cuomo for the emergency declaration, which resulted in the release of funding to allow for the free flu shots.

Tomarken and Grosso each stressed it is not too late in the season to obtain a flu shot.

“I think it’s important that leaders not ever send mixed signals about this,” Grosso said.

Cuomo also directed the Suffolk DHS to provide educational information to schools, colleges and other service providers about obtaining flu shots and other preventative measures, according to a letter from Tomarken dated Feb. 9 on the DHS website.

Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (DSetauket) is sponsoring legislation that would, for the first time, collect data on all deaths resulting from influenza virus, not just deaths of those 18 years and younger. If approved, the statistics would be reported monthly during flu season and would become the basis of an annual report on that year’s flu season due to the Legislature each May.

“Our understanding of annual influenza outbreaks is limited by the limited data being collected by national, state and local health officials,” Hahn said in a statement. “When the statistics used to monitor this epidemic excludes nearly 79 percent of Suffolk County’s population it is difficult to get a clear picture of its impact on public health.”

County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) is also supporting the bill.

Northwell Health, a health system that oversees several area hospitals including Huntington Hospital, has instituted a new biosurveillance system to track and respond to the volume of influenza cases it’s handling this season. Among other benefits, the system enables Northwell Health to proactively manage the distribution of resources, including supplies needed to treat patients and protect staff, such as antiviral medications, rapid flu tests, masks and gloves.

Grosso said the implementation of the statistics yielded from the new system is still coming along, and he said he anticipates it will be a useful tool during subsequent flu seasons.

Free flu shots are available for Suffolk residents age 2 and older at local pharmacies and for those at least 6 months old at pediatrician and health care provider offices. Additionally, the county is offering free immunizations for residents 6 months old and up today, Thursday, Feb. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. Residents are asked to call 631-787-2200 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to schedule an appointment.

Cronin leads Patriots to first league title since 1990

With a 64-51 win over Sachem East Feb. 9, the boys basketball team nabbed a share of the bragging rights for the first time since 1990.

With only five players scoring, Ward Melville was efficient enough to hold down Sachem East in its final regular season game. Brentwood played Longwood the same night and lost, 53-49, leaving the Indians, Lions and Patriots all tied at 11-3 in League I play. Ward Melville had the best overall record at 16-4.

“It’s all we’ve talked about in the offseason,” Ward Melville head coach Alex Piccirillo said about winning the league title.

“We’ve gone all spring, all summer, all fall; we’ve played 100 games. All we talk about is putting a dot up on the wall. At times this year, we didn’t know if it was going to happen. We came together and it all kinda fell into place.”

Senior Trevor Cronin, who averaged four to six points per game this year, finished Feb. 9 with a game-high 18 points, 16 of them coming in the second half.

“If you’re going to leave him open, that’s what he’ll do to you,” Piccirillo said of Cronin. “He’s worked his tail off and got tremendously better. He just works hard and does whatever we ask him to do.”

For Cronin, who barely touched the ball two years ago as a sophomore on the junior varsity team, he wasn’t the only one reviving the game’s vitality.

“My teammates have been there for me all year,” Cronin said. “When they needed me to pick them up, I was there to pick them up today. It’s all about my teammates.”

Economic growth is tip of the iceberg METRO

Capital bond propositions are asking taxpayers to reach deeper into their pockets.

It’s not what you’re asking for, but how you’re asking

Asking for money is uncomfortable. In our daily lives, needing to borrow some cash here or there isn’t a request that rolls off the tongue easily for most.

Since New York State implemented a 2 percent property tax levy cap in June 2011, school districts have been asking taxpayers to consider a referendum for additional spending cash more and more frequently. Boards of education have been required to get creative in trying to get done essential facility improvements to keep buildings and programs vibrant, and to engender high level academics, athletics and artistic performances for as many students as possible.

It’s admittedly not an easy job keeping a school district flourishing while being required to raise tax revenue by no more than 2 percent from year to year, especially in cases where contractual raises or benefit cost increases blow past the cap to begin with. If asking to borrow a couple of dollars here and there from friends or family is an awkward task requiring tact and humility, school districts should be approaching it the same way.

A common thread for bonds voted down by taxpayers in our coverage area in recent years has been a cry for more transparency and community involvement in every step of the process, from compiling lists of projects to be addressed to trimming that list down to the actual appearance of a bond on a ballot.

We found it refreshing to sit in Feb. 12 on the public bond presentation of Comsewogue School District, based in Port Jefferson Station. Although it hadn’t been decided if a proposition will ultimately end up on the ballot in May, making it impossible to know if its strategy will be effective in getting a bond referendum passed at this time, what we do know is that a lack of community involvement or input will never be a charge hurled at Comsewogue.

Since early January, the district’s facilities committee, a group made up of professionals from a wide cross section of the community, has been meeting and deliberating about what projects it would ultimately recommend the board of education considers, including in a bond proposal. If the board goes forward with holding a referendum, members of the board have asked the committee, which includes engineers, architects and civic association leaders, remain involved in every step of the process going forward. John Swenning, board president, said it wouldn’t make sense for the board to ignore the expertise, passion and smarts that could be offered by each of the committee members throughout the process. This is how asking for money should be handled.

It seems like in many cases capital bond propositions are assembled and presented to the community in that order, and public hearings and discussions that follow are just a formality — being held only to meet state-mandated requirements.

District’s seeking permission from communities to borrow large sums of money over long periods of time should approach the ask by doing just that, informing residents on ways their moneys need to be expended, and asking them how in other ways they’d like to see their dollars spent.

In my opinion, part of the problem with the president’s detractors may be the issue of his personality characteristics, as perceived by them, as opposed to his actual accomplishments, which are considerable. For example, in another recent letter [“Agreeing with Arrigon on Trump,” The Village Times Herald Jan. 4 edition], Professor Elio Zappula unkindly described President Trump as “disgraceful,” “unendurable,” “a menace to our people,” “completely unfit,” “disgustingly and childishly narcissistic,” “rude,” “prejudiced,” “money mad,” “ignorant,” “a degrader of women” and “an insulter of people of various ethnic origins,” ... among other things.

His supporters, of course, take a more charitable view, seeing him as honest, forthright, confident,

successful, supportive of worthwhile causes and a person who eschews being manipulated by advocates of political correctness.

Let us therefore consider the words of Al Smith, a liberal who evolved into a conservative, who said, “Let’s look at the record.”

Quoting polls is often a fool’s errand, because they are often biased, one way or the other, and also because they frequently change. However, it does appear that President Trump polls consistently higher with respect to his accomplishments than his personality. Interestingly, in the case of President Obama, the inverse was true; people liked his charming personality more than his actions, which many viewed as socialist and unconstitutional. In any case, a very recent Rasmussen poll, reported by The Washington Times, tells us that President Trump’s overall approval rate now exceeds that of President Obama, at the comparable point in their respective tenures.

How can this be? As James Carville told us, “It’s the economy, stupid.” President Trump, an avowed capitalist, has ended odious and stifling regulations at a rate of 66 cuts for each new one.

He has given us sweeping tax cuts,

60 percent of the value of which goes to families, directly resulting in millions of workers receiving large bonuses and increased wages from thousands of companies, insultingly described as “crumbs”

by Nancy Pelosi, whose personal worth is several hundred million dollars. Unemployment is down to 4.1 percent, its lowest level in 17 years. Black unemployment in December was 6.8 percent, the lowest it has been since it was first recorded in 1972. And, 1.7 million jobs were created in 2017. The gross domestic product growth rate is over 3 percent and is likely to go higher. The president has extricated the United States from the useless Paris Climate Agreement, which was predicted to cost us as much as $3 trillion and 6.5 million jobs by 2040. And these are only the tip of the economic iceberg.

It is unfortunate to note that these and a myriad of other accomplishments are being made without the cooperation of our progressive friends and the Democratic Party, who have no apparent agenda other than “resisting,” i.e. undermining, President Trump and the Congress and providing amnesty for illegal aliens.

Trump making America his footstool President Donald Trump continues to behave in a way that endangers our democracy.

Much of what he says, does or threatens to do — as often suggested by his odd advisers and lawyers — is undemocratic and highly objectionable. He far too often speaks and acts in a way that is wholly unacceptable to our nation’s ideas, laws and people.

One example of his objectionable behavior is his ceaseless attacks on our free press.

Oppressive talk of that sort is wholly opposed to America’s constitutionally protected idea of the freedom of expression.

Also, recent statements made by his defense lawyers, urging him not to appear before a subcommittee, are wholly unacceptable and threaten our democracy. No American, including Mr. Trump, should be allowed to ignore a summons to appear before a government committee, jury, etc. Such refusals disobey a fundamental law of our nation and can (and should) lead to intervention by the judicial branch

of the government.

This president often sounds like a dictator. For example, his frequent criticism of our free press is highly objectionable and quite repulsive. Only dictators speak unendingly in a critical way about their nation’s news sources. Granted, not all aspects of the media are constantly truthful; some report news that is fabricated, exaggerated or inaccurate — but most do not.

Politicians have no right whatsoever to try to limit or destroy the free expression that is characteristic of newspapers, radio or TV programs. The president can object to the content of the media’s news releases, but he cannot limit their freedom to say what they wish.

If the president refuses to testify before legitimately established government committees, etc., he will be acting like an all-powerful ruler. When he says or does certain things that most Americans find highly undemocratic, he reveals objectionable ideas and attitudes that increase

the fear that he is anxious to make America his footstool.

If he refuses to testify, he will merely increase the justifiable insistence on the part of so many Americans that he be constitutionally removed from office. His behavior is unlike that of most leaders of our past.

The fundamental laws of our nation should not be trampled upon by this man. The Supreme Court can judge the legality and appropriateness of any given law.

No single individual, including the president, can be permitted to disobey the law, unless the Supreme Court rules that a specific law is illegitimate.

Donald Trump is acting more and more like a potential dictator, and therefore he arouses the fear that he may one day crush the democratic foundation of our country. Thus, he must either immediately alter his highly objectionable ways of speaking an acting or be legally removed from the White House.

Parade proposals for the president

H

i, Mr. President. Sir? If I could have a word with you? Please don’t walk away. I don’t plan on insulting you and I promise not to talk about your hair. Full disclosure: I disagree with some of the things you’ve said and done, but I like to believe that you’re trying to help the country the best way you know how.

I’m here to talk to you about this parade idea. I know you want the military branches to march in front of you, with their shiny weapons, impressive tanks and their beautiBy Daniel Dunaief ful uniforms.

They have an extremely difficult job. They protect freedom and democracy, risk their lives, go where they are told, and live by a set of rules that are more challenging than the ones most of the rest of us follow.

D. None of the above

They deserve an enormous parade.

But, wait, why stop at a single parade? Once we’ve celebrated the military, couldn’t we have a new parade every day the way that incredibly successful American company, Disney, does? Or if that’s too much, a parade of the month?

How about a parade for valedictorians and salutatorians? You could invite the top high school students to Washington to celebrate the top achievers in high school. Let’s give a few of them a chance to make speeches, to share their stories of success and to encourage others to work hard.

Let’s also celebrate scientists.

Mr. President, I write about scientists every week for this newspaper and, I have to tell you, these people are inspirational. They are not just men and women from all over the world in white lab coats.

They are passionate about pushing the frontier of knowledge. They are committed to curing diseases, to improving technology and to answering questions that previous generations could only address

through philosophy.

Have you been to the National Synchrotron Light Source II at Brookhaven National Laboratory?

That facility, which cost close to a billion dollars, is awesome. It can see inside batteries as they operate, it can help understand catalysts as they are functioning, and it can help understand ways to pull dangerous particles out of the air.

Why should Sweden get all the fun when it comes to top science awards, like the Nobel Prize? How about if the United States develops its own set of science awards? You could name them the Trump Triumph as a way to celebrate science.

What about teachers? Surely a nation as incredible as ours should have a parade for its finest teachers, right? These people ignite the passion for discovery, encourage focus and discipline, and serve as valuable role models.

You could find some of the best teachers in each state, fly them to Washington, have them march in a parade and then get together to exchange ideas. Imagine how much

better the best teachers would be if they met other accomplished educators from around the country in D.C.? They could create e ducational exchanges for their students, giving them a chance to connect with other students from out of their state.

How about corporate America?

Let’s celebrate the companies that not only make the most money — which helps their stockholders and communities — but also that hire the most people. Let’s thank the CEOs who put Americans to work each year.

What about all the talented young musicians, singers and performers in the country? At the end of the parade, they could sing a song or hold a performance that would raise money for enrichment programs.

After the military, let’s work our way through Main Street, celebrating American effort and achievement.

Mr. President, you are definitely on to something great with the idea for a parade. Let’s celebrate America and encourage future effort and achievement with a plethora of parades.
