Kindergarten Registration for the 2017-2018 School Year The Three Village Central School District offers a full-day kindergarten program for district residents. In order to be admitted to Kindergarten in September, a child must be five years of age, on or before December 1st, during the school year in which they enter kindergarten. A proof of residency (a lease, deed, tax bill or signed contract) must be provided, along with the child’s original birth certificate, and a copy of their immunization records at the time of registration. Registration occurs daily at the Central Registration Office at the North Country Administration Center (100 Suffolk Avenue, Stony Brook) from 8:15 - 11:15 a.m. and 1:00 - 2:45 p.m.

Children must be registered with the Registrar’s Office at the North Country Administration Center prior to Kindergarten screening.

Alpaca and llama pets killed by dogs in Setauket

By Donna newman Donna@tBrnewspapers.com Two large German shepherd dogs attacked and killed a pet alpaca and severely injured a llama in a pen at the back of a home on Main Street in Setauket Feb. 5. It happened at about 2 a.m., according to Bob Ingram, a neighbor who witnessed the aftermath and found the dogs still at the scene.

“I heard barking coming from the pen,” the next-door neighbor Ingram said. “It was pitch black out and the barking was aggressive. Then I heard a shrill sound and knew one of the llamas was in distress.”

He drove his car onto the grass, toward the pen where he saw the two black-and-brown dogs menacing the llama. It was barely 10 minutes from the time he was awakened to the time he viewed the scene, he said. Ingram said he honked the horn, but the dogs just ignored it. Finally, he rolled down the car window and yelled and the dogs took off. Ingram called 911 and awaited police response. Upon arrival, an officer determined it necessary to euthanize the surviving animal.

by Kerri Glynn, were beloved by many in the neighborhood.

“Llamas are such lovely animals,” Glynn said. “There’s not an aggressive bone in their bodies.

We’d let them out [of the pen] in the backyard and they would never leave the property. They were the easiest animals to care for that I’ve ever owned.”

Ingram reached out on social media to alert Three Village residents of the danger posed by the dogs. The pen abuts the field at Setauket Elementary School, so he called to alert administrators there. He called his veterinarian, to spread the word.

In the wake of vicious maulings in Brookhaven Town last summer, the board unanimously approved a new policy Jan. 24, effective immediately, intended to keep a tighter leash on dangerous dogs and their owners.

“If there’s a message tonight, it’s to dog owners: Watch your dogs, protect them ... and be a responsible owner ... if you’re not, the town is putting things in place as a deterrent,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said at the meeting.

Under the new town code amendment, which reflects

stricter state law for dealing with “dangerous dogs,” the definition has been expanded to include not just dogs that attack people, as the code was previously written, but other pets or service animals as well.

Now the town, or the person attacked, can present evidence with regard to an attack before a judge or local animal control officers.

Owners of a dog deemed dangerous, who do not properly house their pets, will face large fines. A first-time offender of dog attacks will now pay $500 as opposed to a previous fine of $100; third-time offenders will pay up to $1,000 and must keep their dogs leashed, and in some cases, muzzled, when out in public.

After the Sunday attack, on social media people who travel along Mud Road, Quaker Path and Christian Avenue reported sightings of the two dogs dating back to January.

Save-a-Pet founder Dori Scofield said she had not received any calls about the dogs at either Savea-Pet or Guardians of Rescue.

“German shepherds are super smart dogs,” Scofield said.

Roy Gross, who heads the Suffolk County SPCA, said the organization had no knowledge of the Sunday morning incident.

Gross recommended a course of action should anyone see the dogs.

“Do not approach the dogs,” he said. “Dial 911 immediately, tell them you’ve sighted dogs matching the description of the ones that killed the pets on Main Street in Setauket, and give the location. If you are driving and can safely see where the dogs go, do so. A second call should be made to Brookhaven Animal Shelter (631-286-4940) to inform

them of the location.”

He also gave advice to pet owners in the area.

“All animal owners should keep tabs on them — do not leave them out alone unattended,” he said, adding that is always good policy.

Ingram said he was devastated by the loss.

“I know these llamas really well,” he said. “They’ve been to my children’s birthday parties.

A single person couldn’t handle those two dogs.”

Hahn said she recently discovered illegal dumping and pollution at West Hills County Park in Melville, and it inspired her to draft a resolution.

“We found piles of cement and bricks,” she said. “Vinyl siding sticking out of the ground … there were multiple two by fours, roofing shingles, sheets of linoleum, carpeting, tires and more. Folks have clearly been systematically dumping. Not just dumping, but digging a hole and covering it up and burying these materials.”

The resolution, 1004-2017, was met with unanimous approval by the county Parks and Recreation Committee, and passed 5-0 in a vote on Feb. 7 at the general legislature meeting.

The program will have a designated webpage, phone number and email address. The program would be fully operational in about four months, and the committee will issue a written report on the progress of the program to County Executive Steve Bellone (D), as well as each legislator, by Dec. 1.

Kevin McDonald from the Long Island chapter of The Nature Conservancy said he was pleased to support this effort.

“The public’s best experience for the natural world in Suffolk County is its parks,” he said. “The last experience one wants to have when they’re looking to escape what is otherwise a very hectic life is a pile of somebody’s construction debris from a dump the night before.”

Anker and Hahn said they believe that a camera program would not only catch perpetrators of vandalism and dumping, but also discourage further illegal activity in active and passive county parks.

Berdolt and Sini will work with the legislators and community leaders to identify high-priority areas to place the initial surveillance cam-

eras. Similar programs have been highly successful in other municipalities across the county. The Town of Babylon implemented a camera surveillance pilot program in 2009, which has since grown to include the installation of cameras at all 38 of the town’s parks and some downtown areas.

“The Suffolk County Police Department looks forward to working with the Suffolk County Legislature and the Parks Department to ensure that our parks are protected from vandalism and illegal dumping,” Sini said. “As police commissioner, I will ensure that the police department does its part in this important endeavor.”

A 22-year-old woman from Shirley was driving a 2006 Toyota on Route 25A in Stony Brook near the intersection of Sheep Pasture Road at about 11:30 p.m.

Planning Board hears application for SB Square

By Donna newman Donna@tBrnewspapers.com The Brookhaven Planning Board held a hearing Feb. 6 at Town Hall for the proposed Stony Brook Square commercial retail center to be located on the former Gufstafson nursery property on Route 25A in Stony Brook.

Local developer and Stony Brook resident Parviz Farazhad, who owns several other large commercial properties in Brookhaven and on Long Island, is proposing the 24,000 square foot commercial shopping center.

More than a dozen residents attended the hearing and had mixed thoughts about the proposed commercial development. Several residents were concerned about increased traffic and the need for better building design in keeping with Stony Brook’s historic character. Supporters, some of whom live adjacent to the site, said it will improve the abandoned property and the stores are needed for the community and the students at the Stony Brook School and Stony Brook University, which is directly across the street from the proposed development.

No decision was made by the Planning Board and another hearing has been scheduled March 6 to provide an opportunity for the community and the devel-

oper to meet and discuss issues related to the proposed site plan.

Chairman Vincent Pascale, after hearing testimony from eight people — including representatives of the Setauket Harbor Task Force, Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), Stony Brook University, the Citizen’s Advisory Committee for the 25A corridor, the Civic Association of the Setaukets and Stony Brook, Sidewalks for Safety and Three Village Community Trust — said he would call for a vote to “hold open” the hearing, which he did.

“The application that’s in front of us is a very good application,” he said. “I think it’s well thought out. I think you’ve met the town’s threshold, but I also think that, as many supporters as you have, the community is asking for more outreach.

And I think — as a courtesy to the community as well as the elected representatives of those communities who are asking for a three-week stay, perhaps, so they have their final outreach and to … fine tune whatever needs to be fine tuned … you can show them exactly what changes you’ve made during the course of the last couple of years since you last met. I think it’s important that the community is involved and they certainly expressed themselves tonight in a way that is truly professional.”

3V BOE: Tax cap for 2017-18, and writing centers

By AndreA PAldy A recent board meeting brought news about the cap on the tax levy increase for the 2017-18 school year. Jeffrey Carlson, assistant superintendent for business services, projects a 1.46 percent tax cap, which means a little over $2 million in

additional tax revenue for the district.

Though the district is still awaiting numbers on state aid, based on current estimates for staffing and enrollment, the district will not have to cut any programs for budgetary reasons, Carlson said.

to support development of student writing. The strategy involves expanding the district’s writing center system.

Catherine Duffy, English chair at R.C. Murphy Junior High, explained that when the Ward Melville High School writing center was established three years ago, its mission was to support writing for all students, across all grades and subjects.

That goal, she said, has been extended to the writing centers at P.J. Gelinas Junior High and Murphy, currently in their inaugural years.

During 15- to 20-minute conferences with center tutors, junior high students receive guidance on all types of writing, ranging from academic essays and research papers to creative writing, said Joanna Cadolino, Gelinas’ English chair.

High school conferences range from 10 to 30 minutes and also include science competition papers, résumés and college essays, said Ward Melville’s English chair Brian McAuliffe.

“It has helped to raise our consciousness about how to get students to be aware of, and to use, the writing process more effectively,” McAuliffe said.

The philosophy is one that focuses on the entire writing process, from planning to revision, in order to create better, more independent writers, Duffy told the board.

Long Island Fight for Charity, a non-profit organization, is conducting its search for 2017 volunteer charity boxers. Since 2003, nearly 300 men and women have earned the title of LIFFC Alumni Boxer.

LIFFC’s 14th Main Event, to be held Nov. 20, will feature 10 or more bouts between volunteers who have demonstrated personal commitment to raising a minimum of $5,000 for LIFFC’s fundraising goals that benefit local charities. Over $1 million has been donated to Long Island charities since LIFFC’s founding.

“Fight for Charity brings out the best qualities in the men and women from the Long Island business community who want to ‘give back’ in a meaningful way,” co-founder Matt Silver said. “Last year’s main event was very successful in terms of attendance, sponsorships and the funds raised to support local charities.”

Applications are being accepted, and volunteer charity boxers will enter training to prepare for stepping in the ring at the main event.

Boxing experience is not required, but what is required is a commitment to fundraising, character and a willingness to train in order to be ready to meet a business colleague toe-totoe in the ring in front of a thousand fans. The opportunity is for individuals to make a personal commitment of time, talent and to give back. Hundreds of men, women and children here on Long Island who are dealing with life’s struggles will be the benefactors. Police shine light on the ugly truths of drug abuse

By Kevin Redding Kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini updated the community recently on the success of the department’s Ugly Truth program, a county-wide initiative designed to curb opioid use through community seminars that educate parents and teens, provide treatment options to help those in need of recovery, and shine a graphic light on what these drugs do to those who take them.

The commissioner and local officials took to West Islip Public Library Jan. 25 to champion the department’s Ugly Truth program.

“It’s very important that we recognize the problem, talk about the problem clearly and intelligently, and that we provide people with the tools necessary to get their lives back on track,” Sini said at the press conference that addressed what’s being done by the police to combat the county’s rising heroin and opiates problem.

Suffolk residents who attend the seminars also learn how to administer Narcan, the life-saving drug that reverses the effects of an overdose and helped save well over 200 lives in 2016.

Sini said the epidemic has climbed in the past year, with upwards of 346 fatal opioid-related

overdoses in 2016 as opposed to more than 270 fatal opioid-related overdoses in 2015.

“We need to be invested in solving this problem...there’s no silver bullet here, we need to fight it on all fronts: on the law enforcement front, on the prevention front, on the treatment front, and recovery front,” Sini said.

Since the Ugly Truth program launched in March 2015, with an emergency medical services unit and the medical examiner’s office, 41 forums have been held with a total 3,500 participants. Nearly 700 attendees were between the ages 14 and 17; more than 3,000 have been trained to administer Narcan and 2,400 Narcan kits have been distributed.

A segment of the forum, “Operation: Medicine Cabinet,” teaches parents to make sure prescription drugs are properly disposed of to prevent their kids from rummaging through and finding anything that might be harmful. People in recovery who’ve experienced substance abuse disorders are also brought in to talk about how their addiction has affected their lives and those around them, and resources geared toward combatting addiction, including the Suffolk County Substance Abuse Hotline number, are made available.

The Suffolk County Police Department has also partnered with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and

other organizations to help overdose victims get treatment.

After an overdose, the department gives the victim’s contact information to LICADD and other organizations, which then reach out to the victim about recovery options. In 2016, SCPD provided LICADD with information on 221 overdose victims; 59 of those victims were successfully contacted, and 26 of them were involved in treatment. According to officials these statistics are improving every year.

“If we don’t get personal, families suffer personally and that’s what the Ugly Truth is about,” SCPD Deputy Commissioner Risco Mention-Lewis said. “It’s to be thought of as a personal relationship with members of the bureau, communities, parents and families to say ‘we know you’re suffering, you may not even know what to look for, but we can help you stop this as soon as possible.’”

Officials said nothing hits attendees — especially young ones — harder than when medical examiners and medical experts from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services show slides of some of the devastating physical effects of substance abuse. “While these pictures are not for shock value, we are trying to scare them [teenagers] a little bit and show them some of the things we actually see in the medical examiner’s office,” Suffolk County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Caplan said. “I also want kids and families to know...it’s not just about the overdose; there are multiple other complications, diseases, and infections that can also be complications of addiction.”

Sini and EMS Officer Jason Byron gave a brief demonstration of

Narcan training that Ugly Truth program attendees receive. While the commissioner was quick to point out that Narcan doesn’t cure drug addiction and won’t wipe out the epidemic, he said it’s a step in the right direction.

“Each life we save with Narcan is a potential story of recovery,” he said. “It’s to be administered to the overdosing person as quickly as possible so they’re still alive when first responders arrive. If you administer Narcan, you must call 911 once the person is revived.”

Dr. Scott Coyne, chief police surgeon in the SCPD, has been instrumental in implementing Narcan in the department. He said he’s pleased with how successful it’s been so far.

“There’s just a dramatic number of people that are walking around now that would never have been walking around [without Narcan],” Coyne said. “Unfortunately there is a need for this.

It’s a two-edged sword. It’s a great program, but it also points out the extent of the problem.”

The commissioner expressed optimism the prevention work of the program has been effective.

Even though the county saw a record amount of deaths brought on by opioids in 2016, the average age of those overdosing is higher than it’s been in the past. He said it’s suggestive that the department’s awareness is getting through to young people.

“While the numbers don’t seem to be going down, there is that one silver lining,” Sini said. “This is a long-term investment that we need to be making.

We’ve made a lot of progress on the treatment front. The next frontier has to be prevention and recovery. There has been a complete acceptance now that this is an epidemic that affects all communities, all races, and all demographics.”

PeOPle Kindness Setauket Elementary School students and staff recently blanketed their school community with kindness and compassion as they accepted “The Great Kindness Challenge.”

During the weeklong event, the school was decorated with kindness themed items and students were welcomed to school by special community helper volunteers. Each day of the week followed a different theme, including ones that featured special assemblies and called for students and staff members to wear special coordinated clothing items. Additionally, throughout the challenge, students and staff members complete “kind act” checklists and filled in a large kindness tree painted in one of the school’s hallways with paper hearts celebrating the number of kind deeds they had completed.

Aspiring journalist selected Ward Melville High School sophomore Max Friedman has been selected to represent East Setauket as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2017 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University in July.

Friedman joins a select group of students from all over the country for an intensive weeklong study of journalism and media. He was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in journalism and media studies.

The students will participate in handson, experiential learning through decisionmaking simulations that challenge them to solve problems and explore the creative, practical, and ethical tensions inherent in journalism and media. They will also be addressed by speakers who are well-known leaders in the media community.

Concetta Ferretti of South Setauket died Dec. 29, a little more than two months shy of her 100th birthday. Connie was a homemaker; enjoyed dancing, playing cards and scrabble. Her husband James preceded her in death.

She was born March 7, 1916 in New York City, a daughter of Alfonse and Maria.

Services were held at St. Kevin RC Church in Bayside Jan. 3. Interment followed in the Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery in Flushing.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Barbara and Annemarie; sons Eugene, Robert and John; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, along with many other family and friends.

William G. Hance of Setauket died Dec. 29 at the age of 63.

He was born July 28, 1953 in Brooklyn, the son of William and Gladys Hance.

Bill was a Vice President of Market Data Operations for The Bank of New York. a member of Boy Scouts Troop #117, he enjoyed golfing and fishing, big Yankees and Giants fan. Bill was a man who was very handy, kind, generous, and active in his community.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 26 years Mary; daughters, Kelly and Allison; sons William and Steven; grandchildren Emma, Zachery and Jason; sisters Patricia, Melinda, Kathryn and Susan; brother Neil and many other family members and friends.

Pearl L. Hart

Pearl L. Hart, of Setauket passed away peacefully on Jan. 2 at Stony Brook University Hospital at the age of 92. She was surrounded by family and friends and will be missed by all.

Born May 1, 1924, Pearl was a life-long resident of Setauket and the Bethel AME

Church community.

She was interviewed as part of the Chicken Hill exhibit currently on display at the Three Village Historical Society.

Mrs. Hart is survived by her four sons and daughtersin-law: Harry Jr. and Paula, Steven and Vivian, Roland and Maria, Wayne and his fiancée Kimberly; brothers Robert and Sherwood; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Shirley Ann Chauvin of Ada, Michigan, and former 25-year resident on Brewster Hill Road in Setauket, passed away peacefully Feb. 1. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin R. Chauvin, who worked for WLIG radio when the couple lived here.

Shirley is survived by her children: Dr. James Trout (Maryam), Thomas Trout (Susanne), Michelle Petz (Mark), Lynn Chauvin (Larry Stuewe), Jim Chauvin (Gail), Lisa

Cotter (Tim) and Bob Chauvin; her parents Frederick and BettyJo Nemeth; her brothers Dr. Robert Nemeth (Terri), David Nemeth (Nanci Done); her grandchildren, Sofia, Betty Jo, Ethan, Shamus, Oscar, Dawn Haase (Adam), Josh McLenithan, Ezra Chauvin, Jack Chauvin, Emma and Sara Cotter, Aiden Petz; and her great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Addison.

Shirley was a graduate of Louisiana State University, Northern Illinois University and Aquinas College.

She was a world-renowned artisan, working in needlepoint and petit point, stitching many works of fine tapestry over the years.

Her creativity extended to knitting, crocheting, and endowing friends and family with treasured works of art.

The Dalys remember the snowy night they met A Valentine’s Day tribute to a lasting relationship

By Donna newman Donna@tBrnewspapers.com Angie and Bill Daly are months away from celebrating 60 years of married bliss.

Well, maybe it wasn’t all bliss, Angie said, but they must know how marriage survives, because they are still happily together.

The two met at a church dance in Brooklyn in 1956. Angie’s brother Vin knew Bill from their days together at the Vincentian seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. So when they encountered each other at the coat check, Bill noticed Vin’s armful of coats.

“Where’re you going with all those coats?” Bill asked. To which Vin explained he brought seven girls to the dance. “I said, you’re just the guy I want to talk to.”

Angie was the first girl he asked to dance.

“I was attracted to guys who were fair with blue eyes,” Angie said. “It was those blue eyes. And I thought he was suave.”

At the end of the evening, Bill asked Angie if he could drive her home.

“I thought everything about her was terrific,” Bill said. “She was so bright and cheerful and outgoing — and cute.”

She said yes, but only if some of the other girls could come along. So they piled into his yellow Olds 98 convertible and on the way home, the car broke down.

“It just died,” Angie said. They were

alongside a big cemetery. It was around midnight; no houses or stores were nearby.

It started to snow. Angie and Bill left the others in the car and went to find help.

They finally reached some stores, but only the bar and grill was open. They went in and called Vin, who had been home for some time, got dressed, picked them up, drove all the girls home and dropped Bill off at the train station.

“So the first night we met, we had problems,” Angie said.

They got engaged in 1957, married in 1958, and the babies started coming in 1959. By 1969, the couple had four sons and two daughters. Bill taught algebra and business at John Adams High School in Queens. The family lived in Brentwood.

He moved into sales with State Farm insurance company and operated his own agency for 28 years. The pair moved to Smithtown, where they resided for 25 years before moving to Jefferson’s Ferry in South Setauket a little more than four years ago.

They still enjoy spending time together.

“We have a lot in common: walking, dancing, visiting friends. We’re on the same page,” Angie said, as she turned to Bill to says “Is that a good answer?”

“Yes,” he replied, adding, “listening to a little music … we try to outdo each other in kindness.”

Asked what she thought were the main factors in a good marriage, Angie said she thought that having animals helped a lot.

“Our loving, therapeutic animals kept us together,” she said, adding that she believes they had a calming influence and can reset your feelings when emotions oc-

casionally get out of hand.

And, of course, there is their faith.

“I remember in elementary school the nuns saying ‘marriage is not just a man and a woman. It’s God, man and woman,’” she said. “And I think we both felt that. We always forgave.”

After week wins, Patriots host final decisive matchup Ward Melville will play Brentwood to decide its League I fate

Looking for redemption Feb. 3, the Ward Melville girls’ basketball team outscored Commack at home, 62-47, to remain in contention for a share of the League I title.

The first time the two topseeded teams faced off, on Jan. 10, Ward Melville led Commack heading into the fourth quarter, but lost the game by four points, 59-55. Senior Taylor Tripptree said she knew her Patriots needed to end the game strong in order to pull away with the win.

“In our last game against them our defense fell short in the fourth quarter,” she said. “So this time around we made sure to stay on them and not give up, because the fourth quarter is Commack’s game.”

And defense was the name of the game.

Four minutes in, the game was tied just 2-2 before Tripptree tripled to take a 5-2 advantage. After sophomore Lauren Hansen hit a 3-pointer of her own and senior Kiera Ramaliu also posted a trifecta, Tripptree hit a buzzer-beating field goal to put her team ahead 13-8 at the end of eight minutes.

The Patriots’ defense flexed its muscles in the second and third quarter, holding Commack to 6 and 7 points, respectively, while outscoring the Cougars 26-13 over the span.

“They got some shots, but we got the rebounds,” Hansen said.

Leading 39-21 heading into the final quarter, Ward Melville put on the full-court press to not give Commack the quarter that previously led to their demise.

Although Commack held the advantage in the final stanza, Ward Melville also put up big numbers, with the away team outscoring the Patriots 26-23 in the final eight minutes. Sophomore Bre Cohn hit a pair of back-to-back

3-pointers, Hansen hit her second trey of the game and added a field goal and free-throw point, Ramaliu swished a field goal and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and Tripptree banked two from the charity stripe to put the game out of reach.

Hansen led Ward Melville with 17 points, Tripptree had 14 and Ramaliu added 11.

“We were winning in the fourth quarter in that first game, but we didn’t play great defense,” Ward Melville head coach Bruce Haller said. “Today, I heard them say, ‘this is the quarter, this is their quarter, this was the quarter where they beat us last time,’ and they all knew it. I didn’t have to emphasize it, so they stepped up their defense.”

Senior Hannah Lorenzen said her team worked harder every day in practice for the defeat over Commack.

“It feels good that all of our hard work paid off,” she said. “It was our defense and our rebounding — in practice we focused on boxing out and not allowing them to have second and third shots.”

Ward Melville followed the showing with a monster 76-26 win on the road at William Floyd Feb. 7. Because Commack also won its next matchup, both teams

are 12-1. Ward Melville will host Brentwood Feb. 10 at 6:15 p.m., and Commack travels to Longwood the same day for a 6 p.m. tip-off. The results will determine whether the teams will share, or one will take sole possession, of the League I title.

“You like to challenge yourself against the best — they’re ranked No. 1 in Suffolk County,” Haller said of Commack. “The kids just stepped up and did what they had to do. They played great defense and I think that was the difference in the game.”

An abundance of gratitude There are heroes among us.

We sing their praises so our neighbors will know how very lucky we are they’re here for us. These men and women answer our calls every day, regardless of the weather, time of day, or their own activities and needs.

They save our lives. They protect our homes. They give to our communities beyond all measure. And they do this without pay and by choice. They are the ultimate volunteers.

Firefighters and emergency medical technicians come when we call. They put their own lives on the line to serve us.

With the increase in population on Long Island throughout the decades and the changes in the types of challenges these volunteers face — the need for high-rise fire training, water rescue capabilities, or Narcan administration to revive opioid overdosers — there is much for them to learn and more to do.

Imagine the relief of an ambulance requester when a team arrives, quickly gathers information and determines the necessary course of action, then professionally administers aid while calming bystanders present.

Imagine the gratitude of a family whose lives are saved or whose home is saved by the quick response and technical savvy of a firefighting team that approaches each event with expert problem-solving skills.

Imagine the appreciative loved ones of an accident victim, cared for by first responders who know what to do on the way to the hospital to ensure the best possible outcome.

A member of our editorial staff had occasion to summon an ambulance on Super Bowl Sunday when a diabetic family member who had been ill was found in bed, unresponsive. The ambulance arrived within 10 minutes, the crew quickly sized up the situation, dealt accordingly and the patient responded instantly.

Our communities are brought together by these brave men and women who respond to calls from neighboring towns, sometimes being the first on the scene to help stranded boaters, gather victims of a plane crash or pull a pet from a burning building.

Words cannot quantify the huge debt we owe our local volunteer firefighters and first responders, especially because it is sometimes hard for their fleets to find those willing to dedicate time and risk their lives to do the job. We should support them in every way we can, and thank them every chance we get.

In marked contrast to Donald Trump, who for several years spewed his “birther” blather to try to delegitimize President Obama, I acknowledge Trump as the duly elected president, albeit with three million fewer votes than his opponent. So, too, I accept the fact that elections have policy consequences.

However, when an administration, through one of its executive orders — which the GOP condemned the past administration for using — adopts the profoundly un-American policy of shutting its borders to political refugees and establishing a religion-based test for entry into the United States, men and women of good faith must protest.

The Trump order bans all foreign nationals from seven Muslim countries; halts the entry of all refugees, including children, women and families, for 120 days and Syrian refugees indefinitely.

Reminiscent of the disgraceful

turning away, in 1939, of the MS St. Louis and its more than 900 Jews attempting to flee Nazi persecution, the disgraceful xenophobia of Trump was denounced

by U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer: “Tears are running down the cheeks of the Statute of Liberty.”

Beyond the humanitarian abyss created, the order does nothing to make us safer. According to the Cato Institute, between 1975 and 2015, foreign nationals from the seven banned countries killed a total of zero Americans on U.S. soil.

Moreover, the ban on refugees is equally misplaced. There is not a scintilla of evidence that a single terrorist was among the pitifully few Syrian refugees admitted into our country — 12,500 constituting less than 0.2 percent of Syrian refugees worldwide.

The Trump plan has caused chaos and suffering in America and abroad with green card holders, permanent residents traveling

abroad, university students and critical employees of many companies detained, denied entry and expelled from the country.

Trump will not listen to protests from foreign leaders, including our main allies, thousands of scholars including Nobel laureates, federal judges who have halted aspects of the order, Republican and Democratic senators, thousands of Americans, or his acting attorney general who refused to defend the order and was promptly fired in a classic Nixonian move. Perhaps Trump should heed his vice president and secretary of defense who earlier condemned the overbroad targeting of Muslim immigration.

To those Americans who succumbed to Donald Trump’s xenophobic exploitation of fear, you might consider Galatians 6:7, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Nothing fishy at West Meadow nature preserve This is in response to the letter “Something fishy at West Meadow Beach?” (Jan. 26) in which George Locker presents an uninformed and misleading picture of the Town of Brookhaven’s management of West Meadow Beach, the flagship park/preserve in the town’s park system.

Mr. Locker contends that the interest generated from the town’s endowment fund has provided more than ample funds to repair the cottages at West Meadow Beach. What he obviously doesn’t know, but undoubtedly should if he’s going to make highly critical comments of the town’s management efforts here, is that the town has, since day one, committed virtually all the interest generated from the fund to pay the salary of the environmental educator working there — first Eileen Gerle and now Molly Hastings. Funding this position has been the town’s highest priority as it has allowed the town to offer numerous walks, activities and programs to town residents, thereby enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the natural beauty and wonders of West Meadow Beach.

In addition to the initial removal of the cottages and

the unsightly telephone poles, and the implementation of the aforementioned environmental education programs, the town in fulfillment of the town-sponsored West Meadow Beach Restoration Master Plan has to date: 1) Renovated the northernmost cottage to provide residence for the environmental educator; 2) Elevated the Gamecock Cottage and entered into a license agreement for the structure with the Three Village Community Trust; 3) Controlled invasive plant species throughout the property; 4) Applied for and received a grant to fund the installation of attractive and highly informative signs highlighting the wildlife species found at the park; 5) Installed requested kiosks, benches and picnic tables; 6) Supervised a number of Eagle Scout projects such as the erection of the osprey nesting platform situated along Trustees Road; and 7) Worked with other groups to study and better protect some of the notable wildlife species found here, including piping plovers, horseshoe crabs and diamondback terrapins.

The town wishes to do more to enact the vision detailed in the West Meadow Beach master

plan but for this to happen the governing state legislation needs to be amended so that the town can access principal funds in the endowment. That is why Supervisor Ed Romaine recently wrote to Assemblyman Steve Englebright, sponsor of the state-enabling legislation that guides West Meadow Beach, to initiate discussions on how to best provide desired levels of funding. Town Councilwoman Valerie Cartright is participating in these discussions as well.

Lastly, Mr. Locker raises the issue of the town’s disciplinary action against Molly Hastings, who according to Mr. Locker is being “scapegoated” for the town’s problems at West Meadow Beach.

While it would be totally inappropriate to comment on the details of the case, town residents can be assured the disciplinary action against Ms. Hastings is in no way related to the condition of the existing cottages nor the town’s financial management decisions relating to the park.

OpiniOn Education vote proves we are a house divided

H

ow is it possible that every single Democrat thinks Betsy DeVos, the newly minted secretary of education is woefully unqualified for the position and every single Republican — except for Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine — thinks she’s worthy of the job?

President Trump came to Washington to drain the swamp and to reinvent politics but, at least as far as DeVos goes, this seems like politics as usual.

Does this vote presage an era when Republicans and DemoBy Daniel Dunaief crats will, for the most part, stick with the party line, whatever that is?

tary the Republicans see as worthy? For the Republicans, did they not see any risk to the education system, or was it more important to stand with Trump?

This country is far from unified, as we demonstrated in November. It’s only gotten worse since then. Both sides are digging in their heels even deeper, preparing for a tug-of-war over the future of the nation.

We are living in a world of facts, alternative facts, fake news and fake tweets. The reality, however, is that we are a house divided. A 51-50 vote makes that resoundingly clear. Wasn’t it Abraham Lincoln who said that a house divided unto itself cannot stand?

Is there a middle ground? Are there ways to walk a mile in each other’s shoes, to see the world through a different perspective or, at least, to respect the process and make independent decisions?

Do we elect our officials so they’ll vote along party lines? If that’s the case, who are we electing? Shouldn’t these senators represent our interests

and not demonstrate some loyalty to a party whose entire platform might not be consistent with what We the People believe?

Events in Washington are unprecedented. DeVos is in, thanks to the tiebreaker courtesy of Vice President Mike Pence who voted with his party and with his president.

If I were a political leader from my state, I might take this unprecedented period of discord and find a way to reach across the aisle to my adversaries. It’s not just for the good of the country, it would be a career maker.

Imagine if a bill, a person or a policy had bipartisan support?

Suddenly, we’re not the Shepherdsons and Grangerfords, the Hatfields and McCoys, or the Montagues and the Capulets. Someone, somewhere needs to find a friend in Washington and, no, I don’t mean a dog who can co-sponsor legislation and demonstrate true leadership.

Pick an issue, any issue. Job growth? Sure, it’s one of the main items on Trump’s agenda. Education? Well, sure, that’d be nice, but

we seem to have come to reached a chasm wider than the Grand Canyon with the approval of DeVos. Maybe a Democrat and Republican can co-sponsor a way to support the military? Both sides appreciate, support and respect the men and women who protect our nation. It was also the military that beat back the guiltby-association tactics of Republican Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the early 1950s during the Red Scare.

Let’s raise that flag together and salute the men and women we all cheer during Veterans Day parades, and who we stand and salute at sporting events for their service to our country.

These challenging times present unique opportunities. The future leaders of this nation will be the ones who can show a readiness to get along and think for themselves. A Trump presidency should free other politicians to believe in themselves and their ideas and find other leaders, even someone from the other side, to work for our common good.

‘Hamilton’ is worth much more than a ten-dollar bill

t’s a great history lesson. It’s a gymnastic dance performance. It’s a riveting narrative. It’s a clever rap session. It’s an authentic hip-hop musical, almost like an opera. It’s a whirlwind of energy. And it’s a remarkably true story. What is it? It’s “Hamilton,” the hottest Broadway show in many years.

We know that just about everything that is endlessly hyped usually disappoints. Just two things immediately come to my mind where for me there was no let down: the Grand Canyon and “Hamilton.” Now the anticipation ratcheted up was enormous. I bought the tickets when my friend turned 90 years old. It seemed like an appropriate birthday present, this story from the deep past. After all, for many dinners and evenings she had kept me fascinated with

We LOVED it, all of us, from the opening number to the last sad moments of Hamilton’s life. It was witty, it was impassioned, it was fun, it was sexy, it was literate, it was tragic and it was wonderfully written, sung, acted, costumed and staged.

In truth, Lin-Manuel Miranda, inspired by Ron Chernow’s biography, “Alexander Hamilton” (2004), had great material to work with. Hamilton’s life had everything a playwright could have asked for, with perfect timing now for such a story. Hamilton, born out of wedlock in the mid-1750s (exact year uncertain) and orphaned when his mother died in 1768, comes as penniless immigrant from the Caribbean to make his way.

He had distinguished himself through his writing at an early age, and men of means sent him to New York. He arrived in the midst of the pre-Revolutionary tumult, was accepted at King’s College (now Columbia University), met some of the key figures of the day and became George Washington’s aide-de-camp, in good part because he spoke French and could translate between Washington and his French ally.

He fought against the British at Yorktown in 1781, married the second daughter of a rich New Yorker, authored the majority of The Federalist Papers, became a successful lawyer, went on to be the first secretary of the treasury, from which position he established the banking system of the

nascent United States, was blackmailed in what was one of the nation’s first sex scandals, and ultimately died from a bullet fired by his longtime rival, Vice President Aaron Burr, during a duel on a strip of land above the Hudson in Weehawken.

If it sounds like a peripatetic life, that certainly describes the fierce energy of the play about him.

I had the same feeling about this play as I did so many years ago when “My Fair Lady” with Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews ended, that I had just witnessed some sort of breakthrough Broadway event. And as the characters of “Hamilton,” the Founding Fathers, come alive the way they did in that other excellent historic play, “1776,” we recognized them for their magnificent talents and their all-too-human faults.

The erudite New York Times drama critic, Ben Brantley, had this to say about the play when it opened on Broadway in August 2015. “I am loath to tell people to mortgage their houses and lease their children to acquire tickets to a hit Broadway show.

But ‘Hamilton’ … might just about be worth it.”

So it’s expensive (unless you win tickets through the lottery that has been set up), it requires patience to wait for the actual performance date on the ticket, and most of the original cast is long gone. But none of that matters. There was never a marquee name connected with the show, unless it was that of Miranda.

But his acting wasn’t the reason to go, it was his writing: music, words and creativity. And all that is still there, a wonderful respite from the politics of today.
