The Emma S. Clark Memorial Library is bringing back a winter staple.

During the school winter recess, Thursday, Feb. 20, Emma Clark will once again participate in the annual Take Your Child to the Library Day, first started in 2012 and now an international movement to raise awareness and to celebrate families taking their kids to the local library.

Between 2 and 4 p.m., children and caregivers are invited to drop in for carnival games, face painting, temporary tattoos, balloon sculpting, crafts and more. Each new library card sign-up Feb. 20 will be entered in a raffle.

Changes Coming to Nicolls Road in Stony Brook

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Due to consistent resident complaints, Suffolk County is planning to start work on easing traffic concerns on the northern part of Nicolls Road sometime by the end of the year. The planning has been several years in the making.

A recurrent issue for travelers on Nicolls Road has been drivers weaving quickly to the left lane when coming from eastbound Route 25A to make a left onto Lower Sheep Pasture Road.

William Hillman, Suffolk County Department of Public Works chief engineer, attended the Feb. 3 Three Village Civic Association meeting to discuss changes planned for the county road.

“It’s a relatively simple project,” he said.

“Vehicles traveling eastbound to go south on Nicolls Road — many of them weave across to make the left on Lower Sheep Pasture Road.

Simultaneously, someone who has made a left from 25A, quite often there’s conflicts there.

We’re looking to eliminate that.”

He said the slip ramp on Route 25A approaching Nicolls will be removed, bringing a right-turn lane up to the signal. The

only time the right-turn lane will stop is when the left-turn lane on the westbound side has the green arrow.

“About 80 percent of the cycle is green for this movement, so it’s only 20 percent that it would be stopped,” Hillman said. “From a capacity standpoint, it will have very little effect.”

The chief engineer said while Route 25A is a state highway, the county received a permit to remove the access ramp due to it causing

problems on the county road.

Daniel Dresch, assistant chief engineer, said the lane will be about 450 feet long. When asked if a study was done regarding traffic on Route 25A, he said it wasn’t undertaken due to it being a state road, and instead the county focused on remedying the problems on Nicolls.

“It’s well outside of the scope of what we can do,” Dresch said.

study of the area at Nicolls Road, Hillman said. During the morning peak hour, between 8 and 9 a.m., about 600 cars make the right from 25A. In the same hour, approximately 130 vehicles then make a left onto Lower Sheep Pasture Road.

Civic members asked what may happen to pedestrian crossings.

Hillman said the changes will improve pedestrian safety due to the county eliminating the slip ramp. Suffolk will also construct sidewalks from the north entrance of Stony Brook University up to 25A on the west side of Nicolls and a sidewalk on the east side as well.

Members also questioned Hillman and Dresch about bicyclists. Hillman believes the removal of the slip will help cyclists heading eastbound on 25A due to not having the conflict with drivers making a right before the light.

Those in attendance also used the opportunity to ask about possible plantings in the median, and if the civic association could help. Hillman said while community members can’t legally work on medians and islands, which are considered part of the road, members can sponsor landscaping work on the spaces.

Playing with LEGOs Makes History Fun at Village Chabad

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Local children and their family members had some fun with plastic building blocks while learning about one of the oldest cities in the world.

Using 70,000 LEGO pieces on a 20-by-20foot mat, members of Village Chabad in East Setauket created a replica of the Old City of Jerusalem Feb. 3. The LEGO model included many points of interest, such as the gate entrances to the city, the Tower of David, the Temple Mount, the Western Wall and more.

Rabbi Shalom Ber Cohen, from Village Chabad, said the goal of the program was for those involved to leave the event with an admiration for the holy city.

Village Chabad brought in architect Stephen Schwartz of New Jersey-based Building Blocks Workshops to lead the children, parents and grandparents in constructing the model. On the mat were lines to help guide the building efforts. While some sat on the mat constructing walls and towers, others on the sidelines started putting together the buildings, grabbing LEGO pieces from bins.

people a ‘visual image’ of the shape and location of all the important elements in and around Jerusalem. It is a much more dynamic way to teach than just looking in a book or on a screen.”

Smithtown resident Gail Declue said she had no idea what to expect when she arrived for the build.

“I think it’s great,” she said. “The kids are really involved, and they are going to learn a lot about what Jerusalem looks like without

even going.”

Elina Rukhlin, also of Smithtown, said her 10-year-old son was among the children building with LEGO pieces, and the family had traveled to Israel last year.

“My son is actually saying I remember we went to the Tower of David light show,” she said. “So, it’s really cool to be able to look back on our experience and then to see this, because we were actually there.”

Cohen said Village Chabad had heard about Schwartz’s work from different schools and institutions. The architect has also offered several programs that focus on the historical buildings in Stony Brook for The Ward Melville Heritage Organization.

Schwartz said he has been conducting the LEGO projects for 25 years. It began when his daughter, an elementary school teacher in the Bronx, asked him to show her second-graders how a city is designed.

“When I saw that with LEGO you could teach second-graders about zoning, and they understood it, I saw that this was an amazing teaching tool,” he said.

Schwartz said in the past he has worked with LEGO pieces for different Jewish history programs, including Jerusalem, Masada, the Warsaw Ghetto and the world’s tallest LEGO menorah.

The architect said the projects are usually completed in two hours due to working around a school’s schedule. The Village Chabad program ran from 4:30 to around 6:30.

Schwartz said after every program he aims for a 15-minute educational tour.

“I am an architect, so everything is exactly to scale,” Schwartz said. “The program gives

Police Say More Than 200 Sex Trafficking Victims Known But Have ‘Only Scratched the Surface’

BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Two mothers, one from Farmingville and the other from Merrick, may live on different parts of Long Island, but both had very similar experiences, watching their daughters abused in sex trafficking schemes that saw men use drugs to keep their children captive.

Lisa Principe and Maria Francavilla spoke of their experiences Jan. 31 at a Suffolk County Police Department press conference in Yaphank to round off National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

Principe said her daughter, Jenna, went to school at Wellington C. Mepham High School in Bellmore. She said her daughter fell in love with a man who ended up taking advantage of her in the extreme. She was gang raped at only 19 years old, as her “initiation.” She was kept in motels with a number of other girls as her pimps used her addiction to drugs to keep her under control. She would spend time in and out of jail, but as soon as she got out the traffickers were there to pick her up and bring her back into the fold.

“They took her soul,” Principe said. Even after the men keeping her were arrested, Jenna would later die at 27 from an overdose at home.

Though her hardship remains, she said she hopes new initiatives from the police will help combat the slew of sex trafficking cases happening all across the Island, targeting potential victims on the internet, in public places or even around schools.

Jennifer Hernandez, the executive director of the nonprofit Empowerment Collaborative of Long Island, which provides trauma services for victims of human trafficking and other abuse, said they have worked with more than 160 victims of trafficking just this past year.

“Most of which were born and raised right here on Long Island — in Suffolk County.” she said.

Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said the biggest misconception about sex trafficking is that it’s men piling people, mostly immigrants, into the back of trucks and taking them away.

Modern sex trafficking happens to people of all walks, immigrants and native-born Long Islanders. Traffickers take vulnerable people, mostly young women, and use a combination of drugs, violence and other emotional manipulation

to control these women. There’s no single place, police said, whether rich or poor, that sex trafficking isn’t happening. The epidemic is tied to the opioid crisis that still rages in communities across the Island.

Since October of 2017, the police’s human trafficking unit has leveraged 417 charges against individuals, with 186 she said were specifically related to sex trafficking. The police

has interacted with and identified over 220 women involved with trafficking since the beginning of the initiative, with the youngest one being only 12 years old.

Still with those numbers, Detective Lt. Frank Messana, the commanding officer of the department’s human trafficking unit, said they have “only scratched the surface.”

On Jan. 25, Kings Park man and alleged Bloods gang member Abiodun “Abi” Adeleke was sentenced to 25 years in prison for multiple counts of sex trafficking.

He allegedly participated in this ring from 2014-18.

Last year, Sound Beach man Raymond Rodio III was arrested for allegedly hosting a sex trafficking ring at his parent’s house on Lower Rocky Point

Road. Police and the county district attorney said he had preyed on more than 20 women over several years, most from Suffolk, with many floating in and out from the man’s basement apartment as his parent’s home located in a relatively middle-class neighborhood.

Rodio had pleaded not guilty and was next expected to appear in court Feb. 4.

Rodio’s investigation originally began in 2018 when an officer witnessed a suspected victim of trafficking in the alleged perpetrator’s car during a traffic stop. Hart said such awareness and education, for not only police officers but the general public, is doing much of the job of finding and arresting sex traffickers.

In October 2017, police first piloted its human trafficking program, which then became permanent in 2018. The commissioner said in the year prior to the unit being formed, there hadn’t been any examples of sex trafficking arrests.

In 2019, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office started a human trafficking unit to work inside the county jails.

Undersheriff Kevin Catalina said the team of officers look to identify human trafficking victims within the jail. While women are in jail for a stint, officers can get them to “open up.” Many, he said, could not even identify they were victims of trafficking, instead thinking these people were their “boyfriends.”

Francavilla had a similar experience to Principe. Her daughter, Tori, fell in with the wrong people early out of high school. She described it got to the point that her daughter was, “handcuffed to a bed and kept captive.”

She would eventually help put the perpetrator away but, like Jenna, the opioid addiction followed her even after her traumatic experiences.

She died when she was 24.

Police said a person is at-risk or is already a victim of trafficking if they start to show behavior of chronically running away from home or having a history of unstable housing, demonstrates inability to regularly attend school or work, exhibits bruises or other physical trauma, withdrawn behavior, signs of drug or alcohol addiction, inconsistencies in their stories, inappropriate dress, a mention of a pimp, “daddy” or being “in the life,” suspected engaging in prostitution, history of pregnancies, abortions or sexually transmitted diseases, and looking as if they worked excessively long hours.

Identifying such a person, a resident should call 911 in an emergency, or contact Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS (8477).

Amid Low Coronavirus Cases, U.S. Aims to Keep It That Way

BY DANIEL DUNAIEF DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM As the number of people infected with the new coronavirus climbs in China and countries limit travel to the beleaguered country, the incidence of infection in the United States remains low, with 11 people carrying the respiratory virus as of earlier this week.

American officials stepped up their policies designed to keep the virus, which so far has about a 2 percent mortality rate, at bay in the last week. For the first time in over half a century, the government established a mandatory two-week quarantine for people entering from China’s Hubei Province, which is where the outbreak began. The United States also said it would prevent foreign nationals who are not immediate family members of American citizens from entering within two weeks of visiting China.

Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, called the viral outbreak an “unprecedented situation” and suggested that the American government has taken “aggressive measures” amid the largely expanding outbreak.

The actions, Messonnier said on a conference call earlier this week, were designed to “slow this down before it gets into the United States.

If we act now, we do have an opportunity to provide additional protection.”

The number of deaths from coronavirus, which has reached almost 500, now exceeds the number for the sudden acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, in 2003. The number of infected patients worldwide has reached above 25,000, triggering concerns about a pandemic.

More than 1,000 have recovered from the virus.

The CDC, which has been coordinating the American response to the virus, has been testing potential cases of the disease. Symptoms include fever, coughing and shortness of breath.

In New York, 17 samples have been sent to the CDC for testing, with 11 coming back negative and six pending. New York created a hotline, 888-364-3065, in which experts from the Department of Health can answer questions about the virus. The DOH also has a website as a resource for residents, at www.health.ny.gov/ diseases/communicable/coronavirus.

“While the risk to New Yorkers is still low, we urge everyone to remain vigilant,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said in a statement.

The CDC sent an Emergency Use Authorization to the Food & Drug Administration to allow more local testing during medical emergencies. Such an effort could expedite the way emergency rooms respond to patients who they might otherwise need to isolate for longer periods of time while they await a definitive diagnosis.

By speeding up the evaluation period, the

CDC would help hospitals like Stony Brook University Hospital maintain the necessary number of isolation beds, rather than prolonging the wait period in the middle of flu season to determine the cause of the illness.

As for the university, according to its website, approximately 40 students have contacted the school indicating they are restricted from returning to the U.S. With university approval, the students will not be penalized academically for being out or for taking a leave of absence.

Testing for the new coronavirus, which is still tentatively called 2019-nCoV, would miss a positive case if the virus mutated. In an RNA virus like this one, mutations can and do occur, although most of these changes result in a less virulent form.

The CDC, whose website www.cdc.gov, provides considerable information about this new virus, is “watching for that,” said Bettina Fries, the chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. At this point, there “doesn’t seem to be much mutation yet.”

In the SARS outbreak, a mutation made the virus less virulent.

Fries added that the “feeling with SARS was that you weren’t infectious until were you symptomatic. The feeling with this one is that you are potentially infectious” before demonstrating any of the typical symptoms.

Fries assessed the threat from contracting the virus in the United States as “low,” while adding that the danger from the flu, which has resulted in over 10,000 deaths during the 2019-20 flu season, is much higher.

In the hospital, Fries said the health care staff puts masks on people who are coughing to reduce the potential spread of whatever is affecting their respiratory systems.

While Fries doesn’t believe it’s necessary to wear a mask to class, she said it’s not “unreasonable” in densely populated areas like airports and airplanes to wear one.

Masks don’t offer complete protection from the flu or coronavirus, in part because people touch the outside of the masks, where viruses condense, and then touch parts of their face.

Even with the mask on, people touch their eyes.

“The most important thing is to keep your hands clean,” Fries suggested.

Fries believes the 14-day quarantine period for people coming from an area where coronavirus is prevalent is “probably on the generous side.” Scientists come up with this time period to establish guidelines for health care providers throughout the country.

Fries suggested that the only way these precautions are going to work is if they are aggressive and done early enough.

“Once the genie is out of the bottle” and an epidemic spreads to other countries, it becomes

much more difficult to contain, Fries said.

The best-case scenario is that this virus becomes a contained problem in China. If it doesn’t spread outside the country, it could follow the same pattern as SARS, which abated within about eight months.

While there is no treatment for this new coronavirus, companies and governments are working on a possible vaccine. This, Fries

estimated, could take about a year to create.

Looking out across the calendar, Fries wondered what would happen with the Olympics this year, which are scheduled for July 24 through Aug. 9 in Tokyo. Athletes who have been training for years certainly hope the virus is contained by then. A similar concern preceded the 2016 Olympics, when Zika virus threatened to derail the games in Brazil.

Port Jefferson Station Man Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash Jan. 30 Suffolk County police said a man was killed in Port Jefferson Station early Friday morning in a single-vehicle crash.

Police said Joel Almanzar, 35, of Port Jefferson Station was driving a 2014 BMW sedan on Green Avenue, off Bicycle Path, Jan. 30 when the vehicle veered off the roadway, hit a parked car and continued through a fence before striking a tree and a shed at around 1:30 a.m., Jan. 30.

Almanzar was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Valerie Cartright on Why She’s Running for Senate District 1

BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) has been a Brookhaven Town councilwoman for the past six years, but now she is looking a little higher, the New York State Senate District 1 seat.

That position is now an open battleground since 44-year Sen. Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) announced earlier this month he would not be seeking reelection.

Cartright said she had been asked numerous times by people in and out of the Democratic Party to run for higher office but had not considered it until LaValle made his announcement.

“He had a significant impact on the region,” she said. “For the past 44 years he has worked hard to take care of District 1.”

With the change two years ago of the Democrats taking control of both the Assembly and Senate, she said the person who comes into the seat should have the ability to deliver for the district. As someone who sees herself as having worked hard on community issues at a town level, taking that mentality up to Albany will allow her a greater access to resources to help people at home.

sees as very important which she’s worked on with the Brookhaven board to attack at the Town level, including water quality and protecting a sole-source aquifer and improving the quality of state roads.

Another is moving away from fossil fuels, for which she said electrification of the Long Island Rail Road’s Port Jefferson line is a must.

Having been a civil rights attorney

before joining the Town board in 2013, she congratulated the legislature for working on a number of items to address equity, including health care, voting rights, education and criminal justice, though there is “more work to be done.”

She cited the need for New York to crack down on prescription drug pricing, with some drugs costing a few hundred dollars in Canada but several thousand in the U.S. She said New York needs to hold drug companies to task and to set limits.

She added she is an advocate for allowing paid gestational surrogates in New York, which is one of the few states that still bans the practice. As a survivor of breast cancer, she said she was once forced to consider a surrogate as an option, before she overcame the disease and had her first child.

In terms of housing and affordability, Long Island has suffered under sky-high housing prices and rents. Cartright said there is a need for “smart growth,” along with an increased acquisition of open space at multiple levels of government, to mitigate the impact to Long Island’s sole-source aquifer. She said there is a need for a complete restructure of property taxes and called for a study on the property tax structure.

Though the state is currently controlled by

Democrats in both the Assembly and the Senate, things could always swing in the opposite direction, and like LaValle and his fellow Republicans found themselves in 2018, suddenly Democrats could become the minority. Cartright said that should the situation change, she has already proven she can work alongside Republicans being the only Democrat on the Town board.

She is not the only Democrat seeking the nomination. Other contenders for the seat include Parents for Megan’s Law founder and Port Jeff resident Laura Ahearn, Suffolk County Community College student and Mount Sinai resident Skyler Johnson and Tommy John Schiavoni, a Southampton Town board member.

The Suffolk County Republican Party has named state Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo (R-New Suffolk) as its front-runner.

Though she said she has respect for all the other Democratic contenders, she feels she is in the best position to take her message to Albany, with the most legislative experience over her contemporaries.

“I know it’s a crowded race, with some formidable candidates,” she said. “But I’m putting my best foot forward … I look forward to serving my [area] and the whole of District 1 on the state level,” she said.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2020-2021 School Year The Three Village Central School District offers a full-day kindergarten program for district residents. In order to be admitted to Kindergarten in September, a child must be five years of age, on or before December 1st, during the school year in which they enter kindergarten. Health Stony Brook Hospital Head Discusses Initiatives to Curb Infections

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM In a Q&A with TBR News Media, Carol Gomes, interim chief executive officer at Stony Brook University Hospital, discusses a variety of topics including patient safety, quality control and curbing infections. Here is what she had to say.

1. Being the interim chief executive officer at the hospital, how important is patient safety and quality control to the day-to-day operations?

Stony Brook Medicine physicians and staff are committed to providing highquality, safe patient care.

Quality and patient safety is priority number one, and we focus on safe patient care every day. The Stony Brook Medicine team convenes a safety huddle that is part of the day-to-day operations in every area, which includes critical leaders from all over the hospital.

We start the day with approximately 35 care team members from nursing leadership, physician leadership and operational leadership who report on important safety or quality opportunities. Our huddles are highly structured meetings that allow the hospital to focus on process changes with direct follow-up. This drives accountability to help ensure that adequate safety measures are in place for our patients at all times.

2. Interim SBU President Michael Bernstein mentioned to us that you were making an effort to curb infections at the hospital among other things. Could you discuss some of the initiatives you’ve been implementing to improve in that area?

Stony Brook University Hospital has three primary strategic quality priorities — clinical outcomes, patient safety and the patient experience.

Proactively, Stony Brook works to provide safe and effective care to every patient via

our patient safety work groups. These groups analyze processes, review relevant data and implement process changes to enhance patient safety and prevent patient harm.

The vast majority of projects and improvement efforts are aimed at reducing hospital associated infections. There are teams that implement best practices for CLABSI, or central line associated bloodstream infections; hand hygiene; CAUTI, or catheter-associated urinary tract infections; C. diff, or Clostridium difficile infections; SSI, or surgical site infections;

and sepsis.

Working groups incorporate real-time data to implement best practices to ensure hospital units continue to drive improvement efforts in achieving patient safety goals.

3. In general could you talk about the threat of infections to patients at hospitals?

Most people view hospitals as a place of recovery and necessarily don’t think of other germs, sick people around them.

Can you speak on that and the challenges you and others face?

As a matter of standard practice, the hospital adheres to rigorous infection control guidelines every day to ensure a clean environment for patients, staff and visitors.

These practices are especially important during the flu season.

Being within the close quarters of a hospital, there is an increased incidence of transmission for infections. Many patients have recent surgical wounds, IVs and other catheters placing them at higher risk of infection. These risks may be enhanced by the acquisition of an infection from a visitor.

Family members and other visitors who suspect they may have the flu or other viruses are advised to not visit the hospital.

To lessen the spread of the flu virus, hand hygiene and attention to reducing the effects of droplets from respiratory illnesses such as the flu can enhance patient safety.

Hand washing prevents infection. It is one of the most important actions each of us can implement before and after every encounter with a patient.

The goal is to minimize that transmission while the patient is in the hospital.

4. Other practices/guidelines at the hospital?

The flu virus most commonly spreads from an infected person to others. It’s important to stay home while you’re sick, not visit people in the hospital and to limit close contact with others.

Visitors should wash their hands before entering a patient room and after seeing a patient, whether or not there is patient contact.

As added protection, patients who have been identified as having infections are isolated appropriately from other patients in order to prevent accidental spread.

Therefore, if a patient has the flu or flulike symptoms, the hospital will place them in respiratory isolation. Likewise, a patient with measles or chicken pox is kept in appropriate isolation.

Visitors may be asked to wear masks on certain units.

5. How do patient safety grades affect how the hospital looks to improve its quality?

Stony Brook University Hospital supports the public availability of quality and safety information about hospitals. We are constantly looking for ways to improve and ensure the highest quality of care.

There is a wide variation of quality reports with different methodologies and results.

Clinical outcomes define our success as a hospital. Better clinical outcomes means we’re taking better care of our patients.

Stony Brook Medicine initiated a major initiative to improve clinical outcomes. We have multidisciplinary groups improving outcomes in the following areas: • Increasing our time educating patients prior to their discharge in order to prevent hospital readmissions.

• Improving the care of our patients receiving surgery to reduce postoperative complications.

• Enhancing the diagnosis and care of patients with diabetes.

• Improving the speed of diagnosis and treatment of sepsis.

In short, great effort is expended in identifying opportunities for improvement with a detailed and focused approach on enhancing patient outcomes.

History Close at Hand

The Long Road to Freedom: Enslaved People on Land and at Sea

MINUSE DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM On the eve of the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, my wife and I watched the DVD movie “Amazing Grace,” based on the story of how a few dedicated men and women in England at the beginning of the 19th century ended the British slave trade. As dramatic as the story was, I was equally impressed by the special features included in the DVD. A tour of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, was interesting and enlightening. The DVD also included “Interactive Discussion Tools and Study Guides” for use with a computer.

One of the main thrusts, or concerns, of the Freedom Center in Cincinnati is that, “Upwards of 27 million people are currently enslaved around the world, more than at any other time in human history.” The DVD and special features also reminded me of the quote, “The medium is the message,” but is it? If the only information we take in comes from one type of source, such as movies, television, videos, etc., we often miss the real story and often the most interesting story. Interestingly, the quote by media analyst Marshall McLuhan was misspelled as “The medium is the massage.”

And just maybe that is more to the point. A film and its special features are no substitute for an actual visit to the Freedom Center and to other museums and historical societies that tell the stories of our history, our culture, our diversity and the challenges we face.

Without traveling to Ohio, we can learn more about our community, its history and diversity by visiting the Long Island Museum’s Mount gallery where you will find images of black and white residents of 19th-century Setauket and Stony Brook by genre artist William Sidney Mount.

Mount shows them all as local residents working and playing music together.

In Setauket, the exhibit Chicken Hill: A Community Lost to Time at the Three Village Historical Society center tells the story of late 19th- and early 20th-century Eastern European immigrants, local African Americans and other local residents from diverse cultures. These men, women and children worked in the local rubber factory and lived, played and celebrated together.

There is also a darker side to the diversity of our community, and it has many facets, including the story of our own enslaved people and our community’s part in the slave trade. This story begins here in East Setauket, along Shore Road, overlooking Setauket Harbor.

The home and shipyard of Joseph Rowland, beginning in 1855, were at the intersection of Shore Road and Bayview Avenue. Rowland built the schooner-yacht Wanderer in 1857 for Colonel John D. Johnson, who was a member of the New York Yacht Club and a wealthy sugar planter from New Orleans. He had a home in the Islips. The

Wanderer was designed by Captain Thomas B. Hawkins and he supervised its construction.

The sails for the Wanderer were made in Port Jefferson, in the Wilson Sail Loft. Wilson also made the first suit of sails for the schooner-yacht America, which captured the cup that still bears the name of that first winner, America’s Cup. That summer of 1857, the Wanderer sailed Long Island Sound with Captain Hawkins as its sailing master. The owner, Johnson, sailed the Wanderer with the New York Yacht Club Squadron. It was said to have been the fastest schooner ever built, too big and too fast so the yacht club wouldn’t let it compete.

That fall the Wanderer voyaged to Havana, via Charleston and Savannah, and it was very widely acclaimed. However, Johnson sold the Wanderer in 1858 to William C. Corey and soon after it reappeared in Port Jefferson. It was fitted for the slave trade, probably at the yard of J. J. Harris.

Numerous large water tanks were installed. All the people looked the other way, except S. S. Norton, surveyor of the port. He became suspicious and notified federal officials in New York. The revenue cutter Harriet Lane intercepted the Wanderer off Old Field Point and took it in tow to New York over Corey’s loud protests.

Corey glibly talked himself free and the Wanderer was allowed to leave for Charleston, South Carolina, where the real owner, Charles Augustus Lafayette Lamar, surfaced. Lamar, staying in the background because of his previous connection with slavers, obtained customs clearance. They completed fitting it for the slave trade and sailed for Africa. Its captain, for at least part of this time, was John E. Farnum, a meanlooking cuss, according to William B. Minuse.

Slavers were rigged to outrun the slave squadrons of Great Britain and America, both of which were trying to stop the now-illegal slave trade. On the west coast of Africa, the Wanderer took aboard some 600 “negroes” and sailed for America. The slaves were laid down, side by side, alternating head and feet, and chained wrist to ankle. They were kept lying there for days and there was no sanitation. Even worse, if a ship was overtaken by one of the slave squadrons, it was not uncommon to fasten an anchor to the last man on the chain and let it go overboard, taking the whole cargo of slaves and destroying the evidence.

On the evening of Nov. 28, 1858, it landed 465 Africans on Jekyll Island, Georgia. The rest died during the voyage and were unceremoniously tossed over the side. The ship was seized by federal authorities, but the Africans, now on Georgia soil, a slave state, were sold at auction.

There was outrage in the U.S. Congress but little, if anything, was done, less than two years before the start of the Civil War. The Wanderer was sold at auction, and Lamar bought it. In the spring of 1861, it was seized by the federal government and used as a gunboat in the Civil War. It was credited with capturing four prizes. After the

war, the U.S. Navy sold it to private owners who ran it aground on Cape Maisi, east of Cuba, Jan. 21, 1871, and it was a total loss. The mess kettle that was used to feed the slaves on Jekyll Island, Georgia, still existed in the 1970s but has since disappeared. There was even a sign beside it that explained the history of the kettle and told that the Wanderer was built at East Setauket. In 2008, the Jekyll Island History Museum opened the exhibit The Last Slaver.

“The Logbooks: Connecticut’s Slave Ships and Human Memory” by Anne Farrow tells of a logbook of three voyages over a period of 20 months in the first half of the 18th century.

Recorded by a young Connecticut man who went on to captain slave ships and privateers, it tells a much wider and disturbing story. Farrow, a former Connecticut newspaper reporter, feels that the story of African American people must be told over and over, from the beginning. She believes that it has not yet been absorbed into the family of stories told and retold about America, that the story of injustice and suffering still has not made its way into the national narrative.

Unknown to most Americans is the fact that Colonial Connecticut had been a major provisioner of British West Indies plantations where slaves were growing and processing sugar in a monoculture that yielded huge profits to England. In addition, as detailed in the book “Sound Rising” by Richard Radune, Rhode Island men were at the helm of 90 percent of the ships that brought the captives to the American South, an estimated 900 ships.

The story of the Connecticut and Long Island Sound men who took part in the slave trade is disturbingly real. It brings into focus the way many

of our own prosperous and influential Long Island families made their fortunes. It doesn’t change who they were or who we are, but it provides us with a clearer understanding of the pain and suffering caused by their actions. Farrow emphasizes that we should acknowledge what was done and keep it as a reminder of man’s inhumanity to man and how we are continually striving, often unsuccessfully, to make our lives better for all.

Returning All-County and All-Long Island foilist Christopher Ancona, a senior, led the way for the Patriots, winning all three of his bouts as did sophomore épéeist William Lehr.

The win lifts the Patriots to a perfect 8-0 in league, 12-1 overall. The team now has its sights set on another county title.

Championship match play is at Commack High School Feb. 5. Results were unavailable at press time.

Recognizing the Signs Punitive PJ Fine Is Example of Double Standard of Sex Trafficking

While many may equate the stereotype of human trafficking to immigrant communities being shuttled around the United States, sex slavery — of women being coerced and then forced into prostitution — happens right in our North Shore communities.

As difficult as it is to accept this fact, residents need to come to terms in order to help combat the problem.

Last week, Suffolk County police held a press conference to discuss the threat, especially to young women, and the role drug addiction plays in the exploitation. It’s important to take note that some of these victims didn’t start as drug addicts. Many are fed drugs by their pimps to keep them helpless and dependent on them.

We all know the general rules of safety in public to be wary of strangers trying to convince us to go to a secluded place. Other things to keep in mind are also the basics like to travel in groups at night or crowded events, don’t overindulge in alcohol while in public, be aware of your surroundings at all times, keep track of others in your group and never leave a drink unattended.

If you feel you’re being followed in a store, try to find an employee, who will ensure someone walks out to your car with you. If you are not the person being followed by someone, approach the individual you feel may be in danger. It’s better to look like a fool if you’re wrong than to hear that a person was abducted. Act like you know the person being followed. Greet them loudly as you approach and then get as close as possible and whisper that you think they are being followed.

But regarding sex trafficking, much of it is happening behind closed doors. Often young women around high school age — those going through an emotionally turbulent time — are targeted by men who manipulate them.

While police officers described efforts to become familiar with the signs of sex trafficking, Long Islanders need to become more aware of just what sex trafficking looks like, and they need to become more willing to step up and call police if they have suspicions.

Police describe women who are approached by men at public places, such as malls, parties or even schools. They endear themselves to the women, taking them out on dates and treating them like they are loved, before getting them addicted to drugs and using that addiction to control them.

In public, or even amongst your family, if you notice young women with unexplained bruises or signs of drug or alcohol addiction, look for them disappearing at odd hours and speech mentioning a pimp, “daddy” or being in the “life.”

Most victims of trafficking do not even understand they are being used in the way they are.

Trafficking activities can also be spotted at hotels, where more and more employees are being trained to spot victims, but you should never hesitate to notify a manager if you notice signs such as various men coming and going from one room. (This is something to take note of, even in your neighborhood when it comes to a house.) Other signs are of a person allowing someone else to do the talking for them or a young woman with a much older man as her “romantic” partner.

When it comes to voting, pay more attention to the judges elections. To save these victims, judges need compassion and to be able to spot when a person isn’t choosing to sell their bodies for money. They need to know what organizations to reach out to in order to help these victims.

An African proverb says it takes a village to raise a child. Keep all young people under your watchful eye to protect them from these predators.

On Sunday, Feb. 2, a large group of concerned citizens gathered in front of Roger’s Frigate in Port Jefferson to express their outrage over the town’s highhanded threat to impose a fine of $2,000 per day on the building’s owner, George Wallis, for having the audacity to display a sign proclaiming “In Trump We Trust” on the front of the Frigate building. The happy crowd seemed to be in a festive mood and was blessed by fine weather, good fellowship and a salute from the P. T. Barnum as it left from the pier across the street, in the form of a loud blast from the ship’s horn and a wave from members of the crew standing on the bridge.

We were also treated to a few wellchosen words from Roger Rutherford, the manager of Frigate, who thanked us for our support and explained that the purpose of the sign was to express his displeasure with the unnecessary and desperate Democrat attempt to impeach the president, for which he received numerous rounds of applause and cheers from the enthusiastic crowd. Following Rutherford’s remarks, we were pleasantly surprised by an unexpected visit from our great representative in Congress, Lee Zeldin [R-NY1]. Zeldin spoke eloquently about our

First Amendment rights, which guarantee free speech, particularly relating to political matters, and how it is entirely inappropriate for the Village of Port Jefferson to attempt to restrict them in this unconstitutional and unwelcome manner. He also enumerated many of the remarkable accomplishments thus far of President Donald Trump [R] and thoroughly denounced the ongoing Democrat impeachment fiasco, all of which was very well received by the cheering crowd.

I found the prospect of a punitive fine for the exercise of free speech to be yet another example of the double standard so often employed by liberal politicians and their friends. A mere 200 yards or so from Roger’s Frigate lies Rocketship Park. This is now the home of a Peace Pole, which was recently erected with great fanfare by a happy group of our community leaders.

At first, I thought this might have been inspired by the famous Pesky’s Pole, which is located at the end of the right-field foul line in Fenway Park in Boston and was so named because Johnny Pesky used to hit home runs that curved around it. But I soon learned that one of the sponsors of the Peace Pole is our own North Country Peace Group, and the significance of this

pole thus became clear. “Peace,” in this context, refers to peace by pacifism or peace by appeasement. This is the peace touted by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, who promised “peace in our time,” contributing immensely to the imminent onset of World War II. It is decidedly not the “peace through strength” recommended by George Washington and employed by Ronald Reagan to hasten the welcome downfall of the oppressive Soviet Union. Thus, we are told that a Peace Pole in a public park is a wonderful addition to our beloved community, whereas a sign on private property favoring the achievement of peace by realistic means is not permissible and must be forcibly removed.

In November of this year, voters will go to the polls to reelect Trump and Zeldin. Perhaps, at the same time, they will remember that we seem to have politicians who favor one type of speech while imposing large fines on speech of the opposite polarity with which they may happen to disagree.

LIRR Has a Different Definition of On Time Long Island Rail Road President Phil Eng announcing that his on-time performance for train arrivals is the best in three years was far from credible when you look at the criteria used for his assumptions. Here is what he neglected to mention. What about all the canceled and combined trains due to periodic power

outages, signals, broken rails and other problems? These result in overcrowding and standing in the aisles.

Claiming that on-time performance is improving was misleading. Any train arriving within 600 feet of a Penn Station platform or other final destinations within 5 minutes and 59 seconds is considered

“on time.” For many LIRR commuters who have to arrive at work on time, their bosses would not be happy. The LIRR definition of on time is like a teacher giving students a passing grade by rigging the results.

Zeldin’s Comments Are Demeaning I have been watching the impeachment of Donald J. Trump with great interest. I have also noted some disturbing behavior exhibited by my representative, Lee Zeldin (R-NY-1). Zeldin is an ardent Trump supporter, eager to defend his most obvious and flagrant abuses. Like Trump, Zeldin has been using Twitter and Facebook to demean and insult opponents and disseminate false information.

He repeats lies, calling impeachment “a sham, rigged, based solely on hearsay.” He pretends that calling Trump to account for his lawlessness is “ripping the country apart.” When a journalist

asked him to name corruption pursued by the Trump administration other than Biden and CrowdStrike, he could not.

Instead, he called the journalist “a Schiff shill” who insulted her audience for asking the question.

Zeldin has plenty of time to appear on Fox News both day and night, tweet, carry two Facebook pages where he shadow bans, show up in Port Jeff to call its mayor a “far left anti-Trumper” while cheering a building owner who brazenly broke the Village’s sign ordinance but never has time to hold a town hall at night, when working people can attend.

He flits from firehouse to restaurant during the day where his audience sports gray and white hair.

It has been over three years since Zeldin engaged people of all political persuasions within his district. I want to know why he supports dismantling federal regulations that protect our air, water and land and cuts to Social Security and Medicaid and votes against our SALT deductions, to name a few. I consider all this cowardly and unbecoming of a representative of all the people. We deserve better.

Misdirected Fear of New Virus Is Not Acceptable

F

ear can be a great motivator. Fear of failing a test can lead someone to study harder, to pay attention in class and to do whatever is necessary to learn the material.

In many movies, the lead character has to face his or her fears to accomplish something. Luke Skywalker from the “Star Wars” films had to face his father, Darth Vader, to become D. None a Jedi.

Fear, however, of the above can also bring

Last week, the University of California’s Tang Center, in Berkeley, listed a set of normal reactions to the new coronavirus

on its Instagram account. Among other reactions, like feeling anxiety, worry or panic, the school suggested that xenophobia, or “fears about interacting with those who might be from Asia” was also normal. The Instagram post went on to add that having “guilt about these feelings” was normal, too.

Chances are, if you’re feeling guilty about a feeling, it’s probably misdirected and uninformed.

Amid an enormous backlash from alumni at the school, whose current freshman class is about 43 percent Asian, the university has since apologized and taken down the post.

The school hopefully learned, and also offered a valuable lesson.

People in the United States are no more likely to contract a virus that currently has a 2 percent mortality rate from an Asian person than they are from anyone else who is sniffling and coughing.

In fact, at this point in the year, someone near you who is sneezing, coughing or looks sick is exponentially more likely to have the flu.

Yes, the vast majority of the almost

25,000 cases of the coronavirus — with about 3,200 critical — are located in China and, yes, many countries, including the United States, have taken strong steps to limit the possibility of turning this epidemic into a pandemic, causing the virus to spread to two or more continents.

Where someone’s ancestors come from, or where they themselves were born, is much less relevant than where they themselves have traveled in the last two weeks.

And, on top of that, even if someone — Asian, Caucasian, African American, Native American or otherwise — has been to Asia in the last month, if that person has been back in the United States for more than two weeks without showing any signs of illness, then he or she falls into the same category as anyone and everyone else with whom we ride the Long Island Rail Road, sit in a movie theater or stroll through a mall. The mandatory quarantine period for people returning from Wuhan, the Chinese center of the outbreak, is two weeks.

Fear of this virus shouldn’t encourage any

of us to avoid people with a specific heritage because the virus doesn’t care about the small genetic differences that create races. It only seeks the receptor in our cells that allow it to get inside and cause respiratory infections.

So, how do we manage our fear of the virus? We tackle it the same way we do our fear of getting a flu. We wash our hands regularly, we try not to touch our face, and we don’t shake hands with anyone who has a stuffy nose or is coughing.

We can also boost our own immune system by getting enough sleep and eating the right foods.

The coronavirus, for which there are currently no treatments or vaccines, has generated a steady drumbeat of horrible news, from the number of people infected to those who have died, which has climbed to almost 500 but with more than 1,000 recoveries.

Fear of the virus can be and is healthy, motivating countries to protect their citizens and limiting the spread of the virus. The fear, however, of any group will never be “normal” and certainly isn’t acceptable.

As residents listened for the results of the Iowa caucuses, the first indication of voter sentiment in a presidential election year, the new app relaying the results that the Iowa Democratic Party planned to use broke down, and those trying to log in or download it had no training for the task.

Fortunately, there seems to be paper backup for the votes, but it takes time for the voting cards to be counted by hand. According to partial returns so far, still only 71 percent, former Vice President Joe Biden is trailing the other three leaders: Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and the youngest candidate at age 38, has a slim and unpredicted lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders followed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Even as people await the final results, the scene is now shifting to the second voting site and the first primary in the nation, that of New Hampshire.

Back in Washington, the vote in the Senate to impeach the president was another historic and unprecedented news item. The partisan wrangling in the House and Senate between the two major parties has been constantly on display throughout the impeachment hearings the past months. The drama was put forth with an eye to the coming

elections and promises a hard and bitter fight from now until November.

A little bit of relief was provided by the annual football contest, the Super Bowl, this past Sunday evening. For those who watched, the fourth quarter provided much excitement and an intensity that blocked out even the loudest grim news. Three cheers for the 24-year-old quarterback, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who brought his team back from defeat and became the youngest winner of both a Super Bowl and a regular season NFL (2018) MVP award.

Then there is Harvey Weinstein and the trial that, for me, is too much in the news. The constant stream of rape details that are being eagerly reported is a nauseating backdrop for the aforementioned news. There will undoubtedly be a movie.

Speaking of movies, the Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, are coming this Sunday, and they should provide distraction from the heavier events. And isn’t it interesting to learn from a recent news article, that there are probably more than 10 million American nudists? See, you can find happy news if you just try.

A Most Dramatic Week

his was the week that was. And what a week of atypical news it was. Let’s start with the coronavirus and its progression toward a pandemic. The global death toll stood at 492 as of Wednesday morning, according to NBC News, and confirmed cases top 24,000 in mainland China.

More than 185,000 people are currently under medical observation, Chinese health officials said.

There are even 10 passengers with the virus from a cruise ship quarantined off the coast of Japan. Another cruise ship, with 3,600 aboard, has been quarantined in Hong Kong.

While there is talk of work on a coronavirus vaccine, health professionals agree it will take up to a year before such a vaccine would be available to the general public.

A traditional news event with an unusual twist was the president’s State of the Union address Tuesday night in the House of Representatives that had voted to impeach him. Extreme partisanship was on display at the start when President Donald Trump (R) did not shake hands with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) — second in the line of succession to the highest office next to Vice President Mike Pence (R). Then the speaker tore up a text of the speech as the cameras were rolling immediately at the end of the president’s talk.
