A fire destroyed a vacant house in the early morning hours Jan. 28 at 32 Huyler Road in Setauket. The Setauket Fire Department was called by a neighbor after the blaze began, according to Larry Hall, the department’s public information officer.

Chief Bill Rohr received the call at 2:05 a.m. He was assisted by his three assistant chiefs. The initial response brought firefighters into the house to ensure no one was inside. Then they deployed a defensive mode, using high-

volume water until the fire was extinguished at 3:11 a.m. By 4:27 a.m. the department left the scene.

Other area departments assisted, including Stony Brook, Centereach, Port Jefferson and St. James. The Terryville Fire Department handled an EMS call that came in while Setauket F.D. was fighting the fire.

Hall, who lives in that neighborhood, said that driving by he noticed the house was being re-roofed. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. It is under investigation by both the Suffolk County Arson Squad and the Brookhaven fire marshal.

Single-car crash closes N. Country

By Donna newman Donna@tBrnewspapers.com A single-car crash in the afternoon Jan. 29 caused a road closure for several hours from The Long Island Museum west to Stony Brook Road.

The vehicle came in contact with a utility pole, according to Stony Brook Fire Chief John Meringolo, and left the pole cracked at its base and leaning precariously over North Country Road. The call came in at 1:12 p.m., Meringolo said, and one person was transported to

the hospital by ambulance.

During the first half-hour members of the Stony Brook Fire Department redirected traffic. Multiple police units arrived at the scene and traffic control was turned over to the Suffolk County Police Department. Stony Brook University Police redirected traffic heading north on Stony Brook Road.

Representatives from utility company PSEG arrived to replace the broken pole and worked until at least 7:30 p.m., Meringolo said. By 8 p.m. the road was reopened.

Addiction needs to be treated like the disease it is

By Donna newman Donna@tBrnewspapers.com Heroin addiction can still be seen as a closely guarded secret in North Shore communities, but a couple of Three Village residents are doing their part to try to change that.

About 20 people were present Jan. 22 at the Bates House in Setauket for an informational meeting geared to help the loved ones of those battling heroin addiction. The addicts themselves were not present, but parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and other loved ones were, with the hope of gaining a greater understanding for how to combat the problem.

The gathering was a joint venture of both the public and private sectors, initiated by Lise Hintze, manager of the Bates House, a community venue in Frank Melville Memorial Park.

“Pretending we don’t have a drug problem [in our community] only hurts the children and perpetuates the problem,” Hintze said.

“I have a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old and we’ve been to too many funerals. Parents say ‘not my child, not in our town’ but it’s very real and it’s happening here.”

Stony Brook resident Dori Scofield, who lost a son to heroin addiction in 2011, established Dan’s Foundation For Recovery in his memory to provide information and resources to others. Old Field resident Dana Miklos also has a son battling addiction and she wants to share what she has learned to empower parents and help them deal with addiction’s

many challenges. The two represent the “private” interests.

“One of the reasons I wanted to come out and talk about it is to give parents ways to navigate through this horrible process,” Scofield said. “From being at the hospital when your son or daughter ODs and you know you have to get them into treatment, but you don’t know [how].”

Scofield said she dialed a 1-800 number someone had given her when her son overdosed and said she lucked out when the placement turned out to be a good one. She told the event attendees they need not “reach out to a stranger” as she did. She can help.

Miklos wants to eliminate the stigma that keeps affected families in hiding.

“I want parents to know the three Cs: they didn’t cause it, they can’t cure it, and they can’t control it,” she said. “We become so isolated [dealing with an addicted child] just when we should be talking to other parents, supporting each other.”

Suffolk County Leg. Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), who has been working to alleviate the community’s drug problem since taking office, also participated in the event.

“In 2012, the first year I was in office, I couldn’t believe this would be something I could work on and change,” Hahn said. “But I wrote legislation that got Narcan — which is an antidote for opioid overdoses — for our police sector cars. Within a matter of days we were saving one, two, three a day. Within two weeks we had an officer who had two saves back to back.”

Hahn said she authored another bill that would make sure there was a follow-up for each person saved. A Narcan reversal saves a life, but does nothing to end the need for the drug and the cravings. The second piece of legislation tasks the health department with reaching out to those saved to attempt to get them into treatment.

A third piece of legislation she wrote provides training for lay people — like the group assembled at the Bates House — to carry and use Narcan. She encouraged all present to be trained and prepared.

The statistics Hahn gave for Narcan saves showed a steady increase over the last five years. In 2012 after passage of the legislation in August, there were 325 saves. Numbers rose year by year to 475 in 2013, 493 in 2014, 542 in 2015 and 681 in 2016 when at least

240 people died of overdoses, according to Hahn.

David Scofield, who has been sober for three years, delivered a message of hope for those in attendance.

“I don’t have the answers,” he said. “I do know how [it is] to be a kid struggling with drug addiction. This thing is killing people.

Hundreds of people are dying from heroin addiction every day and you don’t hear about it.

That’s just the truth.”

Scofield’s message also included a plea for loved ones of addicts to get past the stigma of addiction and bring the conversation to the community. As long as people hide the cause of death, he said, he believes kids will continue to die.

Town to review SB Square center site plans Feb. 6 Public hearing at Town Hall in Farmingville at 4 p.m.

By Donna newman Donna@tBrnewspapers.com Setauket developer Parviz Farahzad applied to the Brookhaven Town Planning Board for site plan approval to construct a 24,873 square foot retail center, known as Stony Brook Square LLC. The proposed shopping center is located on Route 25A near the Stony Brook railroad station. The plan includes site improvements for parking, lighting, drainage and landscaping.

J. Timothy Shea Jr., a partner in the real estate group of Certilman, Balin, Adler & Hyman LLP, represented Farahzad and Stony Brook Square at a Zoning Board of Appeals hearing Dec. 14. The developer requested front yard setback variances for three of the proposed buildings as well as an addition to an existing building, from the required 25 feet to 11.5 feet; and a height variance for one of the buildings, from a permitted 35-foot height to a 60foot height. The extra height will be used to raise a clock tower in the middle building at the rear of the center.

“We thought it was a nice feature,” Shea said during the proceedings.

A list of 10 recommendations made by the 25A Corridor Citizens Advisory Committee were read into the hearing record.

Eight homeowners or residents spoke in the public comment portion of the hearing.

They expressed concerns regarding traffic safety on the busy road, environmental issues and the viability of adding retail space when there are so many unoccupied stores in the area.

“My first concern is safety,” Professor Erez Zadok of Stony Brook said. “On this stretch of road … people drive fast; over the limit. It’s dark. Additional traffic will make things worse.” He spoke of environmental concerns as well and questioned the need for additional retail space. The nearby Three Village Shopping Plaza currently has four available spaces according to Kristen Moore, spokesperson for Brixmor Properties, and there are three vacant units just down the street.

Several people spoke out against the granting of a variance that would nearly double the permitted height of the proposed clock tower.

Michael Vaeth viewed the tower as a marketing ploy.

“Currently, especially in the winter months, I have a view of the university and the train station,” he said. “I’m objecting to the 60-foot height. That would be the tallest building in all of the Three Villages — including Ward Melville High School.”

“I want to express my objection and opposition to the clock tower. It doesn’t seem to add anything … and it certainly will have an effect on the neighbors,” she said.

David Pauldy also asked the board to reject the height variance for the tower.

“It would have an effect on the neighborhood behind it,” he said. “It would be extremely visible and it would change the

character of the neighborhood.”

The zoning board is allowed 62 days to rule on the request for variances, which gives the board until Feb. 14 to make its decision whether or not to grant the variances.

A public hearing is scheduled Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. at Brookhaven Town Hall in the board meeting room for residents and business owners to continue to voice their opinions on this development.

Brookhaven’s most valuable asset needs a champion

By Donna newman Donna@tBrnewspapers.com The history of West Meadow beach is a contentious one. Cottages leased to private citizens left a large portion of the beach unavailable to the public throughout the years.

A headline in the Port Jefferson Echo newspaper June 19, 1930, read “West Meadow Beach Cottages To Be Ousted By January 1940.” According to Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), removal of the cottages was a cyclical issue. Every decade or so there was a public outcry for a return of the beach to all Brookhaven citizens.

“This had become the norm by the 1960s,” he said.

When Englebright proposed legislation in June 1996, there was significant opposition from cottage owners who fought to keep the beach as it was. Since state legislation could only be established over the Brookhaven Town-owned property with the town’s express permission, a document called a “home rule message” had to be obtained before the legislation could move forward. Under then Town Supervisor Felix Grucci (R), the town agreed.

Even so, the opposition from cottage owners continued.

Stony Brook resident Muriel Weyl said she is distressed by the lack of bench seating along the paved walk out to Shipman’s Point.

“When my husband Peter died last year I wrote to the town offering to fund the installation of a bench in his memory,” she said. “He was an oceanographer, and a founder of what is now the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook and I thought it would be fitting.

She said she loves spending time at West Meadow Beach, and now that she uses a wheelchair she can be seated while enjoying the walk. When she was still walking, she said it was difficult because there were not enough benches to enable her to make it out to the Point. Even now, she said, “it would be nice for the person pushing my chair to have a place to sit.”

Krieger said there was a period of time several years ago where the town allowed residents to dedicate a bench with a memorial plaque if they paid all of the costs for the bench and its installation. This has since been discontinued.

He said he had no answer as to the question why there are not more benches.

Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) recently sent a letter to Englebright offering to work together to solve issues regarding funding and oversight of the West Meadow Nature Preserve.

A 30-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station entered an apartment on Waverly Avenue in Patchogue Jan. 29 and stole a cellphone from a woman’s hand, and then left, according to police. He was arrested in Port Jefferson Station and charged with second-degree burglary.

At a 7-Eleven on Old Town Road in Port Jefferson Station Jan. 26, a 19-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station possessed two different medications without prescriptions for either, according to police.

He was arrested and charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Driving on drugs

A 33-year-old woman from Farmingville was driving a 2003 Honda on Mooney Pond Road in Selden Jan. 25 at about 11 a.m. when she struck a tree, according to police. Police said she also possessed heroin. She was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

A 26-year-old woman from Holbrook stole assorted merchandise from Target on Pond Path in Setauket Jan. 24, and then again Jan. 25, according to police. She was arrested Jan. 25 and charged with two counts of petit larceny.

A 43-year-old man from Massapequa intentionally slammed a door into drywall causing damage at a home on Henearly Drive in Mount Sinai at about 9 a.m. Jan. 28, according to police. He was arrested in Selden and charged with criminal mischief.

At Exxon gas station on Route 25 in Centereach Jan. 28 at about 4 p.m., a 36-year-old man from Holbrook possessed three guns that were previously reported stolen, according to police. He was arrested and charged with three counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

On Jan. 26 at about 4 p.m., a 27-year-old man from Selden took a pair of sneakers from a store in College Plaza in Selden and exited without paying, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Drugged out

At Walmart on Route 347 in Setauket at about 7 p.m. Jan. 27, a 29-year-old man from Miller Place possessed heroin, marijuana and three different medications without valid prescriptions, according to police. He also took 62 items and exited without paying, including clothing, shoes and other supplies, police said. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny, four counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A man was assaulted by several people while at an abandoned home on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station at about 3 p.m. Jan. 29, according to police.

Stony Brook student released after immigration ban President Trump’s order halts entry from seven countries, seeks to reform policy by viCTOriA eSPiNOzA ANd Alex PeTrOSki The recent executive order by President Donald Trump (R) for immigration reform affected refugees and immigrants across the country this past week, including a Stony Brook-bound traveler.

Trump signed an order Jan. 27 to ban travelers from seven nations — Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — from entering the United States for the next 90 days.

The immigration reform effort has been met with criticism from federal legislators and activists, and protests against the ban broke out in airports and cities across the country, some starting just hours after the order was signed.

Other federal politicians and commentators support the action, citing the country’s need to strengthen immigration laws and secure the U.S. from terrorist attacks.

The travel ban and its hasty roll out impacted Stony Brook University president of Graduate Student Organization, Vahideh Rasekhi, who is pursuing a doctorate in linguistics.

According to a statement from university President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., Rasekhi was detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport when she arrived back in the U.S. from a trip to Iran to visit her family, though she arrived on a layover flight from Ukraine.

She was detained and later released Jan. 29.

Stanley addressed Trump’s executive order,

urging caution from international students, and recommending students from the seven countries listed in the order not travel outside of the U.S. unless absolutely necessary during the 90-day period.

“In November, I shared a message with the campus community expressing the university’s unwavering commitment to diversity — anchored in our strong values of access and inclusiveness — and to creating a campus environment that welcomes all,” Stanley said. “I want to reaffirm the university is resolute on this stance.”

Stanley also offered international students contact information for the university’s Visa and Immigration Services Office, and planned to host an information session with legal experts at the Wang Center yesterday, Feb. 1.

Rasekhi, who arrived at Stony Brook in 2010 after attending the University of California and California State University, declined an interview request, but addressed her experience in an emailed statement through a university media relations representative.

“I am now grateful to be back on the Stony Brook University campus, where I plan to complete my Ph.D. dissertation and continue my work as president of our Graduate Student Organization,” she said. “I would like to extend my sincerest thanks and appreciation to all who intervened on my behalf, including elected representatives, attorneys from the International Refugee Assistance Project and Legal Aid Society who volunteered their help,

The U.S. representative for New York’s 1st Congressional District, Lee Zeldin (RShirley), one of Trump’s local supporters, said in an email through a press representative he played a role in Rasekhi’s release from JFK, though he said he supports the order.

“I sympathize with every innocent person looking to come to America for a better life but we must prioritize America’s national security first,” Zeldin said.

He added he would support a ban on all Syrian refugees entering the U.S. until vulnerabilities in vetting systems can be improved.

“America is a nation of immigrants and people should have the opportunity to pursue the American Dream,” Zeldin said. ... “The ultimate humanitarian victory is to assist with efforts to stabilize these nations and eliminate the threats there to peace.”

He also said he plans to monitor the application of the order and intervene in cases where he believes it is being used incorrectly.

In 1823, it cost 50 cents to resole a pair of shoes. You left them at Micah Hawkins General Store and Ordinary and picked them up after the travelling shoemaker had been through the area.

During the first three months of 1826, Henry Tyler of East Setauket purchased eight pints of brandy, forty-nine pints of rum, three half-gallons of rum and one pint of gin. We hope he shared.

In 1890 five percent of Three Village residents were Jewish immigrants from Russia and Poland. Many of these new residents worked in the Setauket Rubber factory.

On August 22, 1893 a motion was made that one of the trustees to be elected in the West Setauket School District be a woman. The motion was not approved. Ah, the good old days.

In 1896, there was one school in East Setauket. The original

building is still standing at the intersection of Route 25A and Coach Road. The school employed three teachers and the total annual cost of maintaining the school was less than $4,000.

The West Setauket School with two teachers and the South Setauket School with one teacher had lower expenses. The three districts together cost taxpayers about $8,000. By 1931, 35 years later the cost of educating Setauket’s youth — now housed in a single building on the hill above East Setauket — was more than $40,000.

Under “Setauket News” in the Port Jefferson Echo newspaper, this was the second item: “April 20, 1907— Henry Smith, of South Setauket, received two carloads of stable manure from Brooklyn last week.”

Benjamin Franklin Thompson, later to be known as Long Island’s first historian, was put in jail in New York City in 1907. He was 23 years of age. His father, Doctor Samuel Thompson, paid a debt of $1,500.00 to secure his release.

On Tuesday September 28,

1909, at about 6 p.m., two trains met head-on just west of the Setauket Railroad Station injuring a large number of people on both trains. Both engines derailed. The eastbound train was the daily mail train and on it there were 10 persons seriously injured, including the Rev. Daniel Marvin, rector of Caroline Episcopal Church.

In 1935, Agnes O’Boyle Pfeiffer was elected to the Setauket School Board of Education. She was the first woman to be so honored in the Three Villages, according to her son John L. Pfeiffer.

Perhaps under the heading of folklore rather than history, George Will Hawkins, West Setauket school teacher, told a story of Captain Kidd that he said was passed down from his grandparents, Captain and Mrs. George Hawkins. “When Captain Kidd needed provisions or a hiding place after some particularly daring raid along the Sound,” he said, “he would slip into the creek, haul down his topmast, and was secure from prying or troublesome government boats that were looking for him, as his

vessel could not be seen from the Sound.”

And, school teacher Hawkins added, “At a point not far distant from the Harry Vingut property (now a housing development opposite the Setauket School field) was an old store along the waterfront. It was at that store that Captain Kidd purchased his provisions. He would always pay for them with a hat full of gold and

silver, a part of his plunder, and whenever he needed wood for the repair of his vessel he would send some of his crew in the woods for the necessary timber.”

Good stories die hard, the truth notwithstanding.

Ward Melville DECA team scores high In their first year competing, Ward Melville High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) team captured top honors at the regional DECA competition that took place recently at Suffolk County Community College.

Of 41 Ward Melville team members, 38 were awarded top prizes in their respective categories. As a result of their excellent performance, these students will compete at the state level in Rochester in March.

Minnesauke Elementary School students learned important safety rules as they navigated a Safety Town on scooters.

The entire gym was transformed into a mini-town, complete with road signs and activity stations, such as a fitness center and car wash. In addition to learning the rules of the road, students were also able to practice the proper way to exit a bus through a large cutout wooden bus.

While on the scooters, they were required to follow proper driving rules, including stopping at stop signs and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Three Village clergy speak out As clergy and faith leaders in the public realm, we walk a fine balance. We minister to those whose thoughts and feelings fall on all sides of the political and social spectrums. At times, we must keep our personal feelings and ideas to ourselves in order to respond pastorally to our entire congregations.

Yet, at times, we have a moral imperative to speak out, to share the prophetic voices from our religious teachings, to heed the call of our faith traditions.

Now is the time to speak out. Now is the time to act. Now is the time for our community to come together and unite across every political, religious or social divide.

We must remember that in our American Pledge of Allegiance, we make an oath that our democratic republic promises to be a place of “liberty and justice for all.”

We are alarmed at the events taking place in our country, our beloved United States of America, the home of the free and the brave, in recent days.

We are especially ashamed and horrified by the executive order enacted this past Friday, Jan. 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which barred citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. The order is far-reaching. Among its actions, it stops the admission of all refugees into the United States for at least four months — even those who have already gone through a rigorous two-year vetting process. It bans Syrian refugees altogether as “detrimental to the interests of the United States,” indicates a priority for Christian refugees over Muslim refugees, and more.

Those detained, deported or rejected by this executive order have included permanent residents of the United States with valid green cards, who have been living here, working here and raising their families here; students and faculty studying and teaching at our universities; family members of citizens and permanent residents; neighbors adding to our economy in the workforce; and refugees fleeing the atrocities and harshness of war, discrimination and poverty.

For centuries people have come to the United States seeking a life of freedom, opportunity and peace. Each of our faith traditions shares a conviction in the full humanity of every person. We believe that to be human is to be created in the image of the divine we call by many names, among them God, Allah, Spirit. When we fail to see the divine in one another, we diminish our own humanity. The scriptural imperative to “love your neighbor” knows no religious or national boundaries, and our common interest in security is only undermined when we allow fear to dismantle the very principles of our democracy.

Over many years, we have been meeting and talking and learning together, across

our diverse faith traditions, as members of the Three Village Interfaith Clergy Association. We celebrate both our commonalities and our differences, because together we demonstrate the beautiful fabric that is our community and our nation. We worship together and support one another, and today we stand together as siblings whose scriptures call us to welcome both the neighbor and the stranger, just as we have been welcomed.

The great humanitarian, social activist and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel said, “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”

People of faith have a particular responsibility to speak out. In the words of the Mishkan T’filah, “There is no way to get from here to there except by joining hands and marching together.” In the Koranic verse, “We have made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come to know one another.” As faith leaders in this community, our hands are joined together to know and be kind to each other.

Be bold. Be brassy. Butt in. Society’s future needs you.

As that great philosopher Pogo put it, “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”

Mr. Feinberg is correct “Your Turn: Behaviors which have become the norm must be challenged” (Jan. 26) when he writes “The concept of abuse is out of control ... because we, together, allow it: because we choose to be disconnected. We all play a part in

allowing it to continue.”

How marvelous it would be if we, the people, would awaken to the need to train ourselves to be aware of others and the desperate need for kindness which, if practiced, might as Feinberg says, spread as an epidemic through society.

We can, we must, collectively learn to empower ourselves, to demand needed changes, and make

them happen.

Eli Wiesel, who lived through the horrors of the worst of man’s inhumanity towards man, exhorts us to “always take sides; ... We must interfere.”

Pay attention. Be bold. Be brassy. Butt in. The future of our society is at stake.

Saying something is safer doesn’t mean that it is Discriminating based on religion is un-American. This statement does not suggest the editorial board is not in favor of a safer country. We just don’t see how turning away people seeking refuge from civil war, oppressive governments, or who are hoping to find a better life for their families poses a threat to America’s national security. It opposes the beliefs on which America was founded. And the current executive order for immigration reform targets people from the Islamic faith overwhelmingly, with more than 65 percent of the population in all seven countries being Muslim — and some countries reaching as high as 95 percent.

Vigorous screening processes are already in place to vet prospective entrants, and according to two think tanks — the Cato Institute and New America, founded to conduct research on public policy — exactly zero Americans have been killed by immigrants from any of the seven countries named in President Donald Trump’s (R) executive order.

Further, the order allows exemptions for people emigrating from countries where they are in the religious minority, again targeting religion. Islam is the predominant religion in all seven countries.

As we have said in the past, immigration policy in the U.S. needs to be reformed. During President Barack Obama’s (D) administration, he failed to deliver on a campaign promise to make it easier for people to come to the U.S. legally and more difficult for people to come illegally.

However, as we’ve previously stated, “build a wall” is not an immigration policy, and neither is “halt immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries.”

The claim America is safer as a result is also difficult to justify. The threat of ISIS is in its ability to reach Muslims already in the U.S., and convince those in the group that they are not welcome, a task we would speculate Trump’s rhetoric and policies have made easier. As Obama frequently stated when bogged down in the wholly unproductive discussion over whether our leaders should publicly use the phrase “radical Islamic terrorism,” the goal of an organization like ISIS is to manufacture a war on Islam. Policies like Trump’s immigration executive order serves as nothing more than an ISIS recruiting tool. While we applaud the effort by government to make our country safer, the execution of this latest attempt has caused chaos.

The time for leaders of both major political parties to disavow President Trump is now.

This is not a partisan issue, as the basic freedoms of our democracy are being threatened.

Our principles are violated when the dissemination of information is shut down, as has been done at the EPA. Our principles are violated when we discriminate against people because of their origin, as the executive orders to

build a wall with our neighbors, and ban refugees from predominantly Muslim countries. Our principles are violated when the means for our citizens to speak out, such as the White House Comments Line, are cut off.

These principles transcend political party; they define the legal and moral bedrock of our democracy.

I am alarmed and disheartened to see legislators of both parties

acquiescing and appeasing, rather than opposing and resisting the incursions on our most deeply-held ideals.

I hope our elected leaders in both parties will put country before party, and instruct the new president how to be a president for all Americans — even those of us who voted against him.

Titled ‘2017’ Orwell’s opus would’ve been on the money The Jan. 27 issue of The New York Times featured a thoughtprovoking and very relevant article by Michiko Kakutani entitled “Why ‘1984’ is a 2017 Must-Read.”

Kakutani noted that George Orwell’s classic novel “eerily tracks early actions by the Trump administration.”

When I was a young man, I read “1984” and found it to be both enlightening and disturbing. It was disturbing because it portrayed a future society where freedom of speech and thought are suppressed under a totalitarian regime and truth is whatever the government holds it to be.

When the actual year 1984 came and went, I breathed a sigh of relief because I figured that somehow we had managed to escape Orwell’s bleak prophecy.

Unfortunately, Orwell only got

the date wrong. He would have been an even greater prophet had he entitled his novel “2017.”

Because we are now living in the age of Donald J. Trump, a demagogue who has gained power in the same way that all demagogues do, by appealing to people’s fears and prejudices.

Throughout his campaign for the presidency and now in his first days in the White House, Trump has proven himself to be an inveterate liar with total disdain for the truth and has created a world of fake news, or as his favorite stand-in, Kellyanne Conway recently put it, “alternative facts.” It is a world where up is down, black is white, and 2 + 2 = 5. It is no wonder that Trump admires and so often praises Vladimir Putin. Clearly, he wants to be “our” Putin.

These are perilous times and it is incumbent upon those who recognize that fact to join the resistance movement. As the distinguished journalist Dan Rather recently said, “Now is a time when none of us can afford to remain seated or silent.”

By the way, if you decide to read “1984” again (or for the first time) you might also want to check out Sinclair Lewis’ 1935 novel, “It Can’t Happen Here.”

Since it is a work of fiction, the novel does not explicitly name the people Lewis is warning against but it is quite clear that they are the 1930s American demagogue Huey Long and another 1930s guy who was then in the process of “making Germany ‘great’ again.”

OpiniOn An inspirational tale of recovery from the volleyball court

e are all proud of our children.

It’s part of the perks of becoming a parent. We beam when they can walk, we celebrate what they say. We applaud their gold stars on their homework sheets, positive comments from their teachers, and their contributions to transformative musical performances that echo long in our minds.

Recently, I attended one of my daughter’s volleyball matches.

She is on a new team and I didn’t know most of the other players.

ball, setting the ball from impossible distances to the net, and flying high in the air to spike a ball onto an open spot on the floor.

These two girls were inspiring their teammates with their play, even as they seemed to demand more from themselves with each set.

During the downtime between sets, parents came over to share congratulations, to offer apple slices, and to step away from the loud gym where other girls and their parents were screaming at and applauding each point.

Recognizing this will be a long season and that we’re in this together, I started chatting with several of the other parents, especially when all the children dove headlong into their cellphones during their downtime.

“My daughter is No. 7,” said a beaming woman whose daughter was about 4 inches taller than she was.

“Great,” I nodded appreciatively. “How long did it take you to drive here?”

The conversations were fairly

mundane until one of the fathers of the two stronger players shared a plug to charge his iPhone.

“Your daughter is a great player,” I acknowledged.

“Thanks,” he said with a smile.

“She’s a survivor.”

“Excuse me?” I asked.

“Yes, she had cancer when she was 1 year old. The pediatrician was doing a routine exam and found something. We sent her for tests and, sure enough, she had cancer.”

“Wow,” I said, stunned that the conversation wasn’t about the weather, if a ball was in or out in the last set, or what we should all do for dinner if we had to stay much longer.

“We went to a bunch of doctors and, finally, we decided to have surgery. Good thing we did, because it was malignant,” he offered.

She probably doesn’t remember it, I thought, because she was too young.

“She actually got cancer again when she was 6, and had to have surgery and chemo when they found

out it was malignant again,” he said.

“She’s recovered well,” I admired.

She isn’t particularly tall, but she flies around the court, setting the ball from almost any angle without ever seeming to tire.

“Oh, yeah, well, she goes for testing regularly now, just to be sure,” he said.

She volunteers at a hospital where other children have cancer.

She encourages other children and tells them that she knows how they feel. When they seem to doubt it, she shows them a copy of a picture in his wallet of his two daughters when they were 8 and 6. The older girl towers over the younger one, who is impossibly thin and bald.

Looking into this father’s face, I could see that he wasn’t only proud of the difficult journey his daughter had taken but he was inspired. So, too, as it turns out is someone else in the family.

“Yeah,” he said with a nod. “It’s why her older sister is now going to school to become a nurse.”

Paraprosdokians anyone?

Patriots keep the ball rolling in the right direction

Ward Melville’s 6-foot 7-inch senior center Alex Sobel posted a double-double with a team-high 22 points and 24 rebounds in the Patriots’ third straight win — an 80-58 home decision over Sachem North Jan. 31.

Although offense comes naturally for the towering center, he also showed off his defensive skills against Sachem. Besides grabbing rebounds, he contributed six big blocks to keep the Patriots ahead, despite a slow start to the game.

After a layup by senior Dom Pryor to open the scoring, Sobel banked the next five points for his team.

He scored nine and Pryor scored six of his 12 points in the game in the first eight minutes.

At the end of the first quarter, Ward Melville had a 17-12 advantage but watched that lead diminish when the Flaming Arrows outscored the Patriots 15-12 in the second, limiting Sobel to just one point.

Junior Brendan Martin led Ward Melville that quarter with six points on two threepointers.

But by the end of the third quarter, Ward Melville found its rhythm, and with help from five players, edged ahead 56-39.

Sophomore Ray Grabowski led the team with 10 points, opening the quarter with a field goal and a three-pointer, and added another of each with back-to-back shots with four minutes left.

“We all played our hearts out and came out with the win we wanted,” said senior Matt Hudzik, who finished with 14 points.

“Some shots weren’t falling my way. Ray Grabowski stepped up big and made a couple of really good shots.”

Martin added two more three-pointers in the quarter.

“We didn’t want the other team to slow us down,” Ward Melville head coach Alex Piccirillo said he told his team at halftime.

“We dictate the pace and tempo, and once we got it going back in our direction, we

made a few layups, got out fast and we were good to go.”

The Patriots spread the wealth in the final quarter, with seven players chipping in points.

“We shoot the ball pretty well,” Piccirillo said. “If our big guys are good, they go, if not, we kick it out and get good looks at threes.”

Hudzik said despite the offense, he’d like to see more from the Patriots on the defensive side.

“We were a little quiet on defense, and we need to get pumped up, get each other going,” he said. “We need to come out with more intensity, but we fought back when we needed to. We know our potential, we just need to play to it.”

Ward Melville’s basketball team has improved substantially over the last several years, and Piccirillo said he’s happy to see more kids buying into the program.

“I think five years ago we decided that we’re going to go all year round, we were going to get the younger guys involved and build the program,” he said. “We don’t take a month off, and they’ve bought into it. We have a nice group of kids, we put the athletes around them and they’re growing.”

Sobel said it’s nice to be a part of the program.

“It’s been great seeing our program grow,” he said. “We fought through adversity and this is the best team I’ve ever been a part of and we’re at our peak. We’re going to take this as far as we can.”
