Just days before the nation celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day and his famous dream, Errol Toulon (D) made history by taking the oath as Suffolk County sheriff, making him Long Island’s first AfricanAmerican elected official in a nonjudicial countywide position.

Toulon, 55, was officially sworn in by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) Jan. 12 during an inauguration ceremony held at Van Nostrand Theater on the Brentwood campus of Suffolk County Community College. Also in attendance were his wife Christina, family members, friends and town and county elected officials, including County Executive Steve Bellone (D), recently swornin District Attorney Tim Sini (D), Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) and former sheriff Vincent DeMarco (C). A former Rikers Island corrections officer and captain who emerged victorious against Republican candidate Larry Zacarese after just two months of campaigning, Toulon entered the race determined to utilize his more than 35 years in corrections and law enforcement to tackle gangs and the opioid crisis, while creating a stronger environment within the county’s jails.

“I have to say, this is a long way from

my days being a batboy with the New York Yankees,” Toulon laughed, referring to his two-year stint in the 1970s serving on the team. “For me, this race was a whirlwind, but this job is one I’ve been preparing for my entire life.”

After serving at Rikers Island from 1982 to 2004, starting in 2012, Toulon worked for two years in Bellone’s administration as assistant deputy county executive for public safety. In 2014 he was named deputy commissioner of operations for the New York City Department of Corrections. In the midst of his career, he has also beaten cancer twice — in 1996 and 2004.

“He is a man who has confronted great challenges in his life,” Bellone said. “I have personally seen him face these difficulties with incredible grace and dignity and fortitude. He has confronted all these challenges and has perseverance, which is exactly what you want to have in a leader.

I am proud to be here today to support a friend, a colleague and a leader.”

During the ceremony, Cuomo called attention to the historical significance of Toulon’s victory.

“It says something about the people of Suffolk County, says something about the progress of society, says something about acceptance and it says that we’re one step closer to Martin Luther King’s dream of one day judging people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin,” Cuomo said. “This sheriff is different in a number of ways, but the first precedent he sets is that he’s the most qualified man to ever serve in this position. I am selfishly overjoyed by Sheriff Toulon’s election because in government, job number one is public safety.”

lead,” Toulon said. “We have to ensure that we deliver as a society and assist those who need help and keep those who do harm off our streets. These gangs might think they’re tough, these gang members might think they have all the answers and can outsmart us, but they’re going to have a lot of time to think about their decisions when they’re sitting behind bars because they were no match for the men and women in the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office.”

Three Village retirees give back to the community

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM For a number of Three Village Central School District retirees, serving the community didn’t stop when they left their former place of employment.

The Three Village Schools Retiree Association provides an opportunity for the district’s past employees to stay connected with former coworkers, and a way to help those in need in the community at the same time. This past holiday season the association continued its yearly tradition of donating to the school district’s adopt-a-family program, as the group raised $3,800.

Debbi Rakowsky, R.C. Murphy Junior High School social worker, said a growing number of families are in need in the Three Village district and most buildings averaged 15 families they collected for this past holiday season. All eight schools in the area coordinate collections at the end of every year and rely on staff donations. She said there was apprehension this holiday season that the gift cards donated by building staff wouldn’t cover the families needs, and the $3,800 from the retirees was distributed amongst all the school buildings and was a major help.

According to Judy McCready, president of the retiree association and member since 2004, one of the missions of the association is to help the community. In addition to donating to the schools’ adopt-afamily program every year, it also grants scholarships to a number of Ward Melville

The association combines fundraising with socializing. The retirees hold a welcome breakfast in September, a holiday lunch at the beginning of December and a happy hour to welcome new retirees at the end of the school year. McCready said at each event the group raises money for the holiday drive and scholarships and attendees are asked to bring a food item or toiletry that is donated to St. James R.C. Church in Setauket. She said members who no longer live in the area send checks for the causes, too.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize that the need for financial assistance is as great

as it is in Three Village,” McCready said.

Betty Baran, corresponding secretary of the association and member since 2004, said the first retirees group in the Three Village area was founded in 1983 and called The Retirees Association of the Three Village Central School District.

In the ’90s another association for only teachers formed called the Three Village Retired Teachers Association. In 2010, the two groups merged. Baran said the current group includes 511 retirees, and while 80 percent are former teachers, the rest of the membership is made up of administrators, custodial, secretarial and clerical staff.

Baran said the members enjoy giving back to the community that was good to them while they were working. Another goal of the association is to provide moral support for current teachers by getting involved in political issues with an educational slant.

“We do try to keep our members abreast politically as it applies to education, and different changes in things that are happening with active teachers,” Baran said.

“We support them. We make phone calls to legislators. So, we have a political agenda to foster education in New York state.

These are issues that we feel strongly about because we were involved in education.”

In the past, members of the association have reached out to local legislators about potential tax cuts, which would have severely impacted school districts and funding for public schools. The group also reaches out to the community to show its support for candidates running for school board and actively made calls opposing the Constitutional Convention before Election Day 2017.

Rakowsky said all the social workers in the district are appreciative of the retirees’ assistance, and it has been a pleasure working with the group.

“I am so proud to be part of this district for a million reasons and this just highlights how our teachers are committed to supporting the community even after they have retired,” the school social worker said.

“I plan on retiring in June of 2019 after 31 years, and I look forward to being part of such an amazing legacy.”

Plans continue for Poquott community dock

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM While the divisiveness over a proposed community dock in the Village of Poquott may be lessening, some are keeping a watchful eye on the plans.

A handful of residents attended a Jan. 5 village planning board meeting at Emma S. Clark Public Library to hear a presentation given by village engineer Charles Voorhis.

The managing partner of Nelson, Pope & Voorhis was on hand to discuss the design of the proposed dock, which is planned for California Park at the end of Washington Street.

Voorhis said the proposed fixed dock would be 128-feet long and 4-feet wide, and at the end, would include a landing area measuring 6-feet wide. The engineer said the dock will include water service, solar panel-powered rail lighting for nighttime and an ADA access ramp made of concrete.

During high tide, a beachgoer could walk up the stairs on the north side and down the stairs on the south side, according to Voorhis, and during low tide villagers could walk underneath. There will be a 30-foot gangway that will serve as a transition from the dock to a 30-by-8 foot float which will make it easier to get into boats, especially smaller recreational crafts.

“I will say that this is a very straightforward installation,” he said. “It’s very similar to what you see for recreational piers for residential homes around the harbor.”

Ted Masters, interim planning board chairman, said the design meets the criteria described in Chapter 64 of the village code.

At a Oct. 26 public hearing, the village trustees made amendments to the chapter per suggestions made by the planning board.

According to the Oct. 26 meeting’s minutes, the required water depth to build a dock was changed from 4 feet to 3 ½ feet, and the width of the dock was changed from not to exceed 3 ½ feet to 4 feet and may exceed where needed to become compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Voorhis said the depth of the water is taken into consideration to ensure any floats for the dock will not rest at the bottom of the waterway and 3 ½ feet is adequate.

After the engineer’s presentation, the meeting was open for public comments and questions.

“I’m just concerned about people who have difficulty maneuvering, putting steps in their way,” Cindy Davis said, after asking if there would be railings, which Voorhis said there would be.

Another resident asked what can be done to prevent icing on the dock. Voorhis said the village is addressing whether or not the dock will need bubblers, which circulates water when there are freezing conditions, and the village is looking into options as far as powering them if needed.

After the Jan. 5 meeting, board trustee Jeff Koppelson said in a phone interview there has been less public debate about

building a community dock, a topic that disrupted prior meetings as many questioned the financial impact of installing one.

“The board of trustees are very conscious of what we have to do to keep an eye on the money angle,” he said, adding a notice was recently posted on the village’s website regarding costs.

The board is looking into a five-year bond for $150,000, according to the post, and the payments would be $32,475 per year. The first two years could be paid off if the board approves the moving of $50,000 from the fund balance plus the $16,160 from the Poquott Village Community Association.

In order to pay the remaining balance of the bond, there would be a tax increase for each household of $80 per year for three years. There would also be the maintenance cost of the dock at $2,075 a year for the village, which would include general maintenance, the floats being removed from the water in the winter and additional insurance.

A few in attendance questioned whether enough or proper notice was given regarding the Jan. 5 meeting. Masters said another public planning board meeting regarding the dock is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at Poquott Village Hall. Residents can also send comments to village hall if they are unable to attend. Dock plans and minutes from past meetings are available for viewing at Poquott’s village hall and posted on its website.

A 33-year-old man from Rocky Point was allegedly found unconscious behind the wheel of a running 2010 Ford with the vehicle in drive at about 7:30 a.m. Jan. 13 in the parking lot of a shopping center on Route 25A in Rocky Point, according to police. He also allegedly possessed oxycodone and Xanax without a valid prescription for either, police said. He was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Burglary and arson

At about 1 a.m. Jan. 12, a 20-year-old undomiciled man allegedly smashed the rear glass door to J & J Fajitas Deli on Middle Country Road in Centereach, entered the business and stole cash, according to police.

He was arrested and charged with thirddegree burglary. During his arrest, police discovered he was allegedly responsible for lighting a 2004 Jeep, 2006 Dodge and a 2002 Volvo on fire Dec. 19 at about 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Bad Boys Toys Inc, a trucking accessory store in Centereach, according to police. He was also charged with three counts of third-degree arson.

Drug use stopped

At about 3:30 p.m. Jan. 9, a 20-year-old woman from East Setauket and a 24-yearold man from Centereach were seated in a 2011 Jeep while parked in the parking lot at Centereach Mall on Middle County Road, allegedly in possession of and for the purpose of using heroin, according to police. They were arrested and each charged with loitering for the purpose of unlawfully using a controlled substance.

Hit and hit and run

On Jan. 6 at about 9:30 p.m., a 48-yearold man from Mount Sinai driving a 2012 Honda allegedly collided with an unoccupied 2004 Toyota, which then slammed into an unoccupied 2004 Ford, according to police. Police said the man allegedly left the scene of the collision without exchanging contact information with the other drivers. He was arrested Jan. 15 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

A 40-year-old man from Shirley allegedly stole a cellphone from Walmart on Middle Country Road in Middle Island Jan. 14 and returned to the store later to return the item for a store gift card, according to police. He was arrested in Selden and charged with petit larceny.

Possession of stolen property

At New York Gold Center on Middle Country Road in Coram, a 27-year-old man from Bellport allegedly pawned five pieces of jewelry belonging to someone else without their permission Sept. 3, according to police. He was arrested Jan. 13 in Selden and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Phone stolen

A cellphone was stolen from a woman’s bedroom at about midnight Jan. 14 at a home on Piedmont Drive in Port Jefferson Station, according to police.

Drug bust

In the woods behind BP gas station on Nesconset Highway in Centereach Jan. 10 at about 1:30 p.m., a 35-year-old man from Calverton allegedly possessed a quantity of heroin and marijuana, according to police. He was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Car break-in

At about 9 a.m. Jan. 14, someone stole the vehicle manual, registration and insurance cards from within an unlocked 2013 Honda parked in the driveway of a home on Salisbury Run in Mount Sinai, according to police.

Mailbox damaged

A mailbox at a home on Quaker Path in Stony Brook was dented Jan. 12 at about 6:30 p.m., according to police.

Heroin arrest

A 24-year-old man from Coram allegedly possessed a clear plastic bag containing heroin while at a home on South Howell Avenue in Centereach Jan. 9, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Jewelry taken

Jewelry was stolen from within a locked hotel room at Danfords Hotel & Marina in Port Jefferson Jan. 13 at about noon, according to police.

Cash taken from wallet

Someone dropped a wallet in the rest room at Buffalo Wild Wings on Route 25A in Miller Place Jan. 13 at about 10 p.m., and it was turned in to employees at the restaurant missing cash that was previously within, according to police.

Brian Walsh, a traffic engineer with the WSDOT, is very enthusiastic about the work that has been done to implement traffic calming measures, especially roundabouts throughout the state of Washington.

“In Washington 352 roundabouts have been completed, all built since 1997,” Walsh said. “At the turn of the century, there were only three in the state. We have opened at least 15 in this last construction period.”

Walsh noted that the art of creating roundabouts has gotten a lot better. Walsh is also chair of the Transportation Research Board’s Project Panel Guide for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety at Alternate Intersections and Interchanges.

“We are a group dedicated to roundabouts — the TRB is also comprised of members from many other countries,” he said. “France, Australia, Holland and Belgium have been constructing roundabouts for many years and we are tightening up the geometrics to get car speeds down — you get better safety.”

Is it possible to redesign 25A between Stony Brook Road and Gnarled Hollow Road to eliminate all or most of the traffic signals? Is it possible to redesign pedestrian crossings so they occur in the middle of a block rather than at busy intersections where vehicle traffic is coming from all directions? The answer, in many cases, is yes. We just have to be willing to accept change when and where it is proven to be beneficial. We need to encourage our state, county and village transportation departments to seriously look at these methods of

Aeronautical pioneer, former Old Field resident dies at 92

BY JANET MARKARIAN Donald James Markarian, formerly of Old Field, who played a pivotal role in America’s space race and landing the first human on the moon, died Nov. 30 at Peconic Landing in Greenport. He was 92.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering at New York University in 1944, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps until 1945. He began his career in aerospace at Chance Vought Aircraft Corp. in Stratford, Connecticut, working as a flight test engineer until 1948. He worked on the Fairchild Pilotless Plane Division in Farmingdale, in 1949, and from 1950 to 1965, held various management positions at Martin Marietta in Baltimore, Maryland.

Markarian worked for Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation in Bethpage from 1966 until 1990, when he retired as executive vice president. During that time he also served on the Advanced Manage-

ment Program at Harvard University.

His specific accomplishments include serving as project engineer for Vanguard 1 (1955-59), the world’s first solar-powered satellite and the second U.S. satellite in orbit after Explorer 1. From 1968 to 1972, he was project manager and deputy program manager for Grumman’s Apollo Lunar Module, which in July 1969, became the first crewed vehicle to land on the moon. During this time, he was honored with both a certificate of appreciation and a public service award from NASA. In 1981, Markarian became project manager for the Grumman Space Shuttle Program, contracted to produce the wing.

During the 1980s, he was appointed vice president of aircraft programs at Grumman, including production of the F-14 Tomcat fighter, an aircraft that had great success during the Iraq-Iran War. “Of all of Dad’s projects, he considered Vanguard 1 his greatest career accomplishment and he greatly regretted the

U.S. narrowly missing being first, after the Soviet Union Sputnik,” his daughter Karen Benedict said. “He would, however, be happy to know that Vanguard 1 is still the oldest human-made satellite still in orbit.”

Markarian was born March 10, 1925, in New York City to Ethel (Zerby) and Michael Markarian of Scarsdale, New York.

His father came to the U.S. after fleeing the Armenian genocide to raise a family and fully embrace the American Dream.

He is mourned by his wife of 72 years, Virginia (née DeAngelis), of Greenport; two daughters, Benedict, of New Hampshire, and Janet Markarian of Orient; four grandchildren, Erin Burke, David Benedict and Alexander and Abigail Collier; great-grandchildren Emily, Ryan and Elise Burke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in March, the date and time to be announced.

Jumping for a cause

Nassakeag Elementary School students recently showcased their jump roping skills as they took part in the school’s second annual jump rope contest.

The contest was a culmination of a jump rope unit taught in physical education class, that was also a fundraiser for the American

Heart Association. In order to qualify for the schoolwide event, fourth- through sixthgrade students had to jump rope for a minimum of three minutes continuously.

In a contest with 63 qualifiers, fifth-grader Jordan Zezelic outlasted everyone by jumping for 11 minutes, 32 seconds.

Sacco’s eighth-grade lesson on using white pencils on black paper.

Mac and cheese business

Ward Melville High School’s Virtual Enterprise class recently competed against 90 other schools from across Long Island during a leadership conference at Long Island University Post campus and earned a semifinalist spot as a result of their performance.

Prior to the contest, the students created a comprehensive business plan on their original firm concept: Mac Attack. The student’s plan was for a restaurant that puts a unique spin on the classic mac and cheese.

All dishes start with a macaroni and cheese base, including gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options and they offer a host of

customizations to create the perfect mac and cheese for all.

With the support of their teacher, Ilene Littman, the students spoke about their restaurant during the event. The “elevator pitch,” which lasted 60 seconds, covered topics such as company goals, the target market, niche and appeal to investors. Mac Attack’s pitch was presented by Niki Friedwald, a senior and the company’s CEO, to a crowd of more than 1,500 attendees.

Virtual Enterprise is a virtual world company filled with various businesses run by high school students in a virtual world.

R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s National Junior Art Honor Society members lent their artistic skills to a worthy cause this winter as they designed shopping bags for a food pantry for the holidays.

After discussing the importance of food pantries and the need to donate to them

throughout the year, the students worked under the direction of adviser Lisa Cappiello to transform recycled paper bags into unique designs.

The completed bags were delivered to an East Northport food pantry just before the December holidays.

Cuomo delivers State of the State address

Although chatter is starting to pick up that he might be a candidate for president on the Democratic ticket in 2020, for now Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is still in a New York state of mind.

On Jan. 3 Cuomo gave his State of the State address, in which he explained his agenda for the coming year.

He began by touting some quality of life issues in New York state that are improving.

“Crime is down statewide, we have a cleaner environment, we have a fairer criminal justice system, we have more high school graduates who are attending colleges,” Cuomo said. “We have preserved more land than ever before, enacted a more progressive tax code, and launched the most ambitious building program in the country.”

Cuomo split the problems he believes the state is facing and his speech into three sections: the challenges of old discrimination and sexism within society, safety threats and the new federal and economic challenges “we have never experienced before.”

He referred to the challenges he plans to address in the coming year as “a three front war.”

First, Cuomo pitched a reform on how the state deals with sexual assault and harassment claims in the workplace for employees paid by tax dollars.

His suggested reforms would include a uniform code of sexual harassment policies, a contraceptive care act, and a governmentwide anonymous whistleblower process so victims feel safer stepping forward.

“No taxpayers funds should be used to pay for any public official’s sexual harassment or misconduct,” Cuomo said.

He also said the New York State pension

fund should only be invested in companies the comptroller determines have adequate female and minority representation in management and on the board of directors while showing effective corporate leadership.

“Our lady justice is still not color blind and her scales are still not balanced,” he said.

The governor spoke of a redevelopment plan for the major transportation hubs throughout the state, an initiative spearheaded in the hopes of improving safety and mobility. These places will be equipped with more and better trained police personnel and more state-of-the-art surveillance systems, according to Cuomo.

A large transportation hub Cuomo said he is focusing on is Penn Station. He said he has created a plan to restructure and rebuild Penn Station to improve operations, aesthetics and security. He is also proposing a plan to rebuild the major train stations that connect the Long Island Rail Road to Penn Station.

He also said he has plans to remove traditional toll booths, and replace them with electric toll structures as a way of reducing congestion along main highways and bridges, a movement that is already underway.

Lastly, Cuomo said he will continue to invest in and improve public education. He plans to expand 3- and 4-year-old prekindergarten, also after-school and computer science programs.

He vowed to make sure more state school

aid is being dedicated to poorer districts, and to make sure the local education districts are distributing more money from received grants to poorer schools.

“Trickle-down economics doesn’t work, and neither does trickle-down education funding,” Cuomo said.

On Jan. 5, Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) provided a response to Cuomo’s State of the State address, expressing similar hopes for the coming year.

He said the urgency of creating a more affordable New York, as well as protecting those who live here should be a priority of lawmakers for 2018.

“Our self-imposed 2 percent spending cap has already saved our state $41 billion,” Flanagan said. “It’s time for the governor and Assembly Democrats to join with us in making that spending cap permanent. Doing so will help to ensure a balanced, fiscally responsible budget that protects taxpayers this year, and every year.”

He echoed the governor’s message on public safety.

“Senate Republicans know that if you, your family and community aren’t safe and secure, nothing else matters,” Flanagan said.

Many of the policies Cuomo spoke of in his address are already starting to be put into effect.

“This is the year we make New York great again,” Cuomo said.

New York launches drug take-back program for pharmacies

BY KEVIN REDDING KEVIN@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM With the recent launch of the first statewide pharmaceutical take-back initiative, New York residents are encouraged to be more careful, and environmentally friendly, when it comes to getting rid of their old and unwanted medications.

On Dec. 28, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that 80 retail pharmacies, hospitals and long-term care facilities across the state will be the first to participate in its $2 million pilot pharmaceutical take-back program, and encouraged more to get on board.

This program allows residents to safely dispose any unused and potentially harmful pills into a drop box at these locations beginning in April, when the boxes are slated for installation.

Once collected, the drugs will be weighed, tracked and incinerated.

The free, volunteer public service, funded by the state Environmental Protection Fund, is modeled after a successful safe disposal program started at King Kullen in 2014 — which, in the past three years, has safely disposed more than 7,600 pounds of pharmaceutical drugs — and aims to improve the region’s drinking water, which has become increasingly contaminated by people flushing medications down the toilet and pouring them down the sink.

Flushed pharmaceutical drugs have been found in state lakes, rivers and streams, negatively affecting the waterways and the wildlife that inhabit them.

Roughly 40 percent of groundwater samples have trace amounts of pharmaceutical drugs, with the most common being antibiotics and anticonvulsants, according to Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment.

“Prescription drugs should come from our pharmacists — not from our faucets,” said Esposito, whose Farmingdale-based organization founded the King Kullen program and lobbied the state to provide funding in its budget in 2016 for the DEC to create the pilot program. “Pharmaceutical drugs are considered an ‘emerging contaminant’ in our drinking water and the flushing of unwanted drugs is one contributor to this growing problem. Safe disposal programs [like this] are critical in combating this health risk. The goal really is to pro-

vide people with an easy, safe and convenient option to dispose of their drugs. We can get ahead of this problem now rather than wait until it becomes a bigger problem later.”

The pilot program is currently open and is accepting applications, according to the DEC website, which also outlines that the $2 million will be used to cover the full cost of purchasing U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration-compliant medication drop boxes, as well as the cost of pickup, transport and destruction of collected waste pharmaceuticals for a two-year period.

Esposito said the program also serves to prevent accidental exposure or intentional misuse of prescription drugs.

“This is a service that all pharmacies should be providing their customers,” she said. “Not

only does it protect the environment, it will keep drugs out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.”

While there aren’t many participants so far in Suffolk — among six volunteers are Huntington’s Country Village Chemists, St. James Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center and Stony Brook Student Health Services — many local pharmacy owners said they were interested in enrolling, while others have already been offering something similar.

At Heritage Chemists Pharmacy & Boutique in Mount Sinai, owner Frank Bosio said he offered a take-back box for more than two years, but funding ended.

“It was a great program and the community loved it,” said Bosio with interest in enrolling in the new pilot program. “I definitely want to get on board with this.”

Manager of Echo Pharmacy in Miller Place, Beth Mango, said her store has a disposal box system in place that complies with Drug Enforcement Administration requirements.

“We had a lot of customers asking us what they could do with their old medications,” Mango said. “We wanted to do something for the community. We’re trying to save our Earth for our children and for future generations — this is one way we know is safe.”

Esposito made clear that most disposal systems outside of the launched program aren’t authorized by the DEC or other agencies, and hopes the list for this particular effort will grow.

Retail pharmacies, hospitals and long-term care facilities can enroll to participate in the pilot pharmaceutical take-back program on the DEC’s website at www.dec.ny.gov/.

Mount Sinai police captain wins big on ‘Jeopardy!’

BY KEVIN REDDING KEVIN@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Since he was 10 years old, Kevin Foley dreamed of going on his favorite television show, standing behind a podium and giving answers in the form of a question.

Last month, the 58-year-old Suffolk County police captain from Mount Sinai finally got his wish as a contestant on “Jeopardy!” where he won a total of $18,000.

“It was the culmination of a lifelong effort,” Foley said of his appearances on two “Jeopardy!” episodes, which aired Dec. 27 and 28. He won his first appearance, raking in $16,000, and fell short of victory in the second, taking home a $2,000 consolation prize for second place. Although he “kicks himself” for the minute error that cost him a win in the second game, failing to risk enough in the final Jeopardy round, Foley said it was an experience he’ll always cherish.

“It was definitely something to check off my bucket list,” he said. “It took me 30-something years to get on there, but I never stopped trying. It’s very satisfying.”

In the late 1960s, Foley, a student in the Plainedge school district at the time, came home for lunch every day and watched “Jeopardy!” with his mother, transfixed by the high-stakes quiz competition then hosted by Art Fleming. The two would bounce the show’s clues off one another, trying to decode them before the contestants did — a routine that continued into the next decade. He said early days with his mother, Dolores Foley, fed right into his already voracious appetite for trivia and knowledge.

“I was the kid that the librarian had to keep telling, ‘No, you can’t take that book out, it’s too advanced for you,’” he said, laughing. “I’ve always read a heck of a lot and retained what I read. My mom was the same way.”

In between the show’s initial cancellation in 1975 and reemergence in 1984 with its new host Alex Trebek, Foley applied to the Suffolk County Police Department, trained in the academy and became an officer within the 3rd Precinct, officially starting in 1983 when he was 23.

Throughout his career, Foley has served in multiple precincts and was involved in the rescue of a 2-year-old girl who had fallen to the bottom of an in-ground pool.

For the past year, Foley has been a precinct delegate for a group called Brotherhood for the Fallen, which sends members of the police department across the country to funerals for law enforcement officers who have been killed. It also provides funds to family members to help with immediate financial needs.

But his desire to be on “Jeopardy!” never went away.

After the show returned to airwaves in 1984, he and his mother would drive to Resorts International in Atlantic City where contestant tryouts were held throughout the year.

“But we never made it past the initial stages,” Foley said of passing the preliminary 50-question written test.

Since the ’80s, he said he swam in the contestant pool for “Jeopardy!” roughly 10 different times — always close but

This past May, Foley, like clockwork, took the show’s annual timed, 50-question qualifying exam online, covering the wide range of categories found on the show, with 35 being a passing score. In July, he was called in for an appointment in the show’s Manhattan offices for further tests; mock rounds of the game for evaluation of on-air stage presence and interviews with producers and members of the production staff. In August, he was asked if he was available for tapings in Los Angeles in September.

Foley, who said he reads two or three books a week and “knows a little bit about a lot,” had amassed a collection of “Jeopardy!” books, filled with facts, and studied them every night leading to September.

“He also watched the show every day, he bought a physical at-home version of the game and I constantly quizzed him,” said his wife Joan Foley, who was in the audience during the taping. “It was nervewracking to sit there among all these other people and everybody else on the show was so smart. I was so proud of him.”

She said that her husband’s mother, who passed away three summers ago, would have been too.

“His mom is definitely smiling down on him now,” she said.

On Foley’s first night, despite trailing behind in third place with $4,400 to the other contestants’ $5,000 and $7,600 after the first round, he quickly bounced back as champion by the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round, finishing with $16,000 to the others’ $8,799 and $0. He said he most surprised himself during the game by correctly answering with “Drake” to a question in the category of Hip Hop and R&B 2017. “Everyone was like, what is this 58-year-old doing answering this one?” he said laughing. He said it was difficult to process what Trebek said to him during the commercial break as he was too concentrated on the game.

“You kind of get engrossed in it all,” Foley said, adding that the show’s host is not as intense and standoffish as he assumed. “He’s very and good-natured — Kevin Foley polite — much more personable than I expected him to be.”

While in the lead in his second game against a new batch of contestants, Foley got caught in the show’s strict “to the letter” rules. The category was “Only The Lonely” with the clue reading: “This 12-letter word often followed ‘Miss’ in romantic advice column titles.” Foley answered, “What is Lonelyheart?” to which Trebek responded “yes,” which he retracted seconds later.

“No, sorry,” Trebek said on the heels of the judges’ reevaluation. “We have to rule against you. It’s Miss Lonelyhearts, not Miss Lonelyheart.”

While that one-letter difference cost him $1,600 and a potential second win, his take-home money is making possible a trip in the spring to Yellowstone National Park, a longtime dream destination for he and his wife.

Not to mention Foley’s “Jeopardy!” success has made him a celebrity among friends and co-workers, many of whom were unaware of his appearances until they were about to air. Nearly 100 people attended a viewing party for the episodes, held at Tommy’s Place in Port Jefferson.

“It was so exciting,” said Foley’s longtime friend Roger Rutherford, general manager of Roger’s Frigate, of seeing his 10-year friend’s face up on the big screen.

“The place was packed and the second ‘Jeopardy!’ announced who was on the show, the crowd went wild. And every time Kevin’s name was mentioned, the crowd roared with cheers and claps and booing the other competitors. Because of the environment, you would think there was a football game on.”

Jack Catalina, Foley’s best friend and former partner on the force, said he wasn’t surprised by how well he did.

“He’s always looking to show everybody how smart he is,” Catalina said, jokingly. “I was so happy for him, and I think he did very well. He’s always been very good at these types of trivia games.”

So much so, Joan Foley said, that he serves as designated host during family game nights, as it would be too unfair to have him compete.

Foley himself laughed at this, before quoting Herman Edwards, the former head coach of the New York Jets.

“You play to win the game,” he said.

Away at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, All-County senior Rafael Lievano notched his 100th career victory at 132 pounds. Lievano, junior Tom Fitzsimmons and senior Richie Munoz were also away.

“We’re already looking forward,” Schnettler said following the loss. “We take it one match at a time, and now we’re getting ready for the next meet. The guys are focused. We could’ve made tonight’s match closer, but we thought long term — gave some guys the rest who needed it — because round one of the dual meet championship is way more important

than us going undefeated in the league.”

Ward Melville competed in the opening round of the newly created Suffolk County dual championship Jan. 17. The No. 7

Patriots were due to meet No. 10 Central Islip, with the winner taking on No. 15 Kings Park or No. 2 Rocky Point. Results were not available by press time.

Ward Melville’s wrestling team looked to cap off its undefeated regular season with another win Jan. 12, but with key competitors away at Eastern States Classic, it was a tall order for the Patriots to fill, which fell to Sachem East 51-27 on their home mat.

“We knew it was going to be a little tight,” said Ward Melville head coach Garrett Schnettler, noting his five starters away at the tournament. “Once we got [beyond] 138 pounds we knew it was going to be tight.”

Ward Melville senior 160-pounder Nabeel Ahmed struck first for his team, winning the opening match 10-6. The Patriots gathered additional points with a pair of Sachem East forfeits at 170 and 182 pounds, and senior Kevin Vera won his match 8-2 at 195 pounds to put his team out front 14-0.

From there, the Patriot lead slowly slipped away, with losses in the 220 and 285-pound weights classes before eighth-grader Christian Lievano started off the lighter weights with a pin at 2:39 over Sachem East’s John Tietjan at 99 pounds.

Sachem East got back in the win column at 106, 113 and 120 pounds to give the Flaming Arrows their first lead of the match, 2624, and never looked back.

Ward Melville senior Ryan Mc Namara said the loss will have no effect on him or his teammates in preparation for the postseason, even if the win would have set a regular season record.

On funding and freedom

While Democrats and Republicans squabble over reaching an agreement to raise the debt ceiling in the hopes of funding the government beyond Jan. 19, peoples’ lives are hanging in the balance.

Debt ceiling battles that come down to the 11th hour are nothing new in Washington. As is wont to happen in our nation’s capital, a highstakes game of chicken is currently underway. Democrats are seeking a resolution to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals initiative while the Republicans want additional border security, which will also serve as much-needed political points for President Donald Trump (R), who promised his supporters a secure border during the 2016 campaign.

While political games often have real-life consequences, this time feels different. DACA was meant to be a temporary fix during the Obama administration to answer the complicated question regarding what to do about children brought to the United States by adults coming here illegally. It provided temporary status for approximately 800,000 people — commonly referred to as Dreamers — who fit this description, though a permanent answer to the question is still being sought. The Trump administration rescinded the action in September and, ever since, Dreamers have lived in fear of deportation from a country that has become home. Now, their status is a pawn in a political game of chess.

Similarly, reauthorization of CHIP — the Children’s Health Insurance Program — is awaiting a government funding agreement. The service provides lowcost health coverage to children in families that earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid.

In 2016, nearly 9 million children were enrolled in the program, according to www.medicaid. gov. The program covers routine checkups and immunizations, doctor visits, prescriptions, dental and vision care and emergency services for enrollees. In November 2017, the House passed a five-year reauthorization bill to keep the program running, but it never reached the Senate floor. The health of 9 million children hangs in limbo while politicians try to score points for their home team.

Obviously, for far more reasons than the fate of DACA or CHIP, a compromise needs to be reached in order to keep the government running.

Taking a funding battle to the wire is nothing new, but it is shameful that leadership from both parties are allowing these vulnerable members of our society to twist in the wind for months on end along the way.

For Democrats, erecting a border wall, or fence, to appease the president and score him a political win in exchange for a sensible resolution to DACA — and an end to the torturous waiting — would not be the end of the world. For Republicans, do 800,000 people who have contributed to our society need to be uprooted and sent home?

While we wait for both sides to grow up and compromise, families with sick kids and those looking to live the American Dream are likely going through incomprehensibly difficult times. A little compromise and compassion would go a long way.

Offshore oil, gas drilling destructive The Trump administration’s decision to open offshore oil and gas drilling in nearly all United States coastal waters endangers our natural resources. In response to this gutting of environmental protections, Congressman Lee Zeldin put out the following statement Jan. 5: “I support an energy strategy that secures American energy independence and drives down costs. On Long Island, however, our waterways are our way of life, and drilling off of Long Island is unacceptable and counterproductive to the well-being of our communities.”

This anti-science, anti-environment, “not in my backyard” thinking is dangerous and wrong.

Offshore oil and gas drilling, no matter where it occurs, is destructive to our natural resources.

Rather than continuing practices that endanger our planet, the focus should be on expanding renewable energy resources.

With this statement, Congressman Zeldin ignores the 97 percent of scientists who warn that climate change is man made, and must be corrected by changing our actions. The congressman recently sent out a mailer to his constituents touting his environmental credentials, using taxpayer dollars to do so. It is disingenuous on the congressman’s part to present himself as an advocate for environmental protection, when he supports the outdated policies and thinking that the Trump administration is proposing. The congressman’s cognitive dissonance is reflected in his score of 11 percent on his environmental voting record from the League of

Conservation Voters.

As a representative to a district that has science and research at its core, I believe it is Congressman Zeldin’s duty to support the evidence-based and science-based research that advocates for developing renewable energy, and reducing oil and gas drilling. I hope that he will become a true supporter of preserving the environment, rather than [offering] selfpromoting token gestures, and supporting regressive measures.

All of us, regardless of political affiliation, must live on this planet together, and science is not a partisan issue. New York District 1 deserves a representative who believes in and fights for protecting the environment.

In green v. green fight, we can have both Kevin Redding’s article [Green v. Green] in The Village Times Herald Jan. 11 edition on Gov. Cuomo’s veto of a bill that would have preserved some 1,200 acres of woodlands in Shoreham and Mastic hits the nail on the head. It’s bad environmental policy to destroy precious forest for the construction of solar factories, which belong on rooftops, in parking lots and on previously cleared land. We don’t have to choose between precious woodlands and the pure water that lies beneath them on the one hand and solar energy on the other.

We can have both.

Alas, Citizens Campaign for

the Environment and the New York League of Conservation Voters lobbied Cuomo to veto the bill, which was introduced

by New York State Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee Chairman Steve Englebright and state Sen. Ken LaValle. And the bill was vetoed.

To Cuomo’s credit, he has vowed to keep working for a solution, and Englebright and LaValle have already reintroduced the bill. True environmentalists are working to identify a more appropriate location for needed solar — one that doesn’t destroy precious forest.

This isn’t the first time that CCE has targeted Pine Barrens

for destruction. The group supported a 195-acre solar project in the Pine Barrens at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 2011. CCE keeps saying that the first priority for land is preservation. Yet, in both cases, the group lobbied for destruction of land instead of directing solar to where it belongs.

We call on Cuomo, the state assembly and state senate, as well as town and county governments to direct needed solar energy to more appropriate sites.

CCE and NYLCV should join that effort and not campaign for forest destruction.

Time for Trump’s impeachment Well, here we go again. Now President Trump has disgustingly, shockingly, disgracefully insulted countries like Nigeria and Haiti by calling them “s - - -holes.”

What kind of man is this? How can he be so insulting, so offensive toward people and nations that are not enemies of the U.S.? And he accused Nigerians of being greatly undereducated — as if that were a crime — when in fact a higher percentage of Nigerians

in the U.S. are college grads than are Americans.

Trump clearly has a miserable character. He has defended the KKK, neo-Nazis — remember Charlottesville — and other misfits and has offended people of color, of various religions and ethnic origins, handicapped people, women and on and on.

He also lied, on Jan. 11, about President Obama, accusing him of altering the location of the U.S.

Embassy in London, when it was George Bush who initiated that change, the year before Obama took office. Trump is a constant twister of the truth. A liar.

It is time for Trump’s impeachment. He has got to go or the United States will be in immense trouble and danger because he is causing us, day after day, to be hated all across Planet Earth.

On becoming older than my father

H

ow old were you when you kissed your first partner, had your first alcoholic drink, met the person of your dreams, had your first child, dealt with your first serious loss, got your first big job or made your first million?

We can use age to motivate us, give us a sense of time and place, and allow us to hear the alarm bells, or to hit the snooze button for the next phase of our lives.

We compare ourselves to those around us to see if we’re approaching the landmarks at the

The comparisons often start with our parents, even though we come from a different generation. I wasn’t anywhere close to getting married at the same age as my parents were when they wed. I thought about that when I passed that landmark age.

Was I moving too slowly? Was I missing something or someone? Was I falling behind?

I took comfort in knowing that I lived at a different time. Then again, I also passed the age at which my brother got married. Did I need to do a hard target search of every outhouse, henhouse and farmhouse to find my fugitive wife?

Fortunately, the answer had nothing to do with age. I could have married other women, but I hadn’t met the right person.

Before my wife and I got married, we were in sync about when we wanted to try to make that wonderfully challenging transition toward parenthood.

Now, as the years have passed and our children have learned to drive

the car — and us crazy — we have reached other milestone ages.

They have celebrated academic landmarks, graduating from elementary and middle schools while working their way through high school.

Our milestone birthday numbers don’t come as frequently as 16, 18, 21, and 25 do for our kids.

But, every so often, we hit a number that has significance either on its own, ending in a zero or a five, or because of some family connection.

I am approaching just such a challenging milestone. My father was this old when he died. I know there are people like Mickey Mantle, who expected to live a relatively short life.

Mantle’s grandfather died at 60 and his father passed away at 40, both from Hodgkin disease. In the event, the baseball legend lived until he was nearly 64.

At every annual physical, my doctor and I review my family history.

We are aware of the diseases that may be lurking somewhere in my genes. It

makes sense to monitor my health and to catch anything early, particularly something that may run in the family.

Still, I don’t share Mantle’s sense of predestination, just as I didn’t feel an overwhelming urge to grab the nearest woman I found relatively unobjectionable because I had to get married at the same age as my parents or my brother.

My life doesn’t come with a playbook or a chapter outline. Maybe I would have made more money by now, reached more personal milestones, or run a few more marathons — OK, one — if I’d recognized all the age-related alarm bells.

Then again, if I had, I would have missed out on knowing my wife and our children, three people whose lives enrich and define my own.

So, yes, while I keep an eye on the genetic footprints in the sand ahead of me, I also hope to follow my own compass as I imagine the days ahead when I become older than my father.

More perilous than skiing was the fog

he recent frigid weather was good training to harden us for our trip north this past weekend. We went high up in the Green Mountains of Vermont to ski. Now before you wonder at my sanity, I hasten to repeat what my clever neighbor told me when he heard we were going.

“Skiing? Just hang out at the bar for a couple of days, then come back and tell us you went skiing. We’ll never know.”

So with proper full disclosure, I confess that I did not ski. I

By Leah S. Dunaief stretched out before a roaring fire in the lodge with a good book that was interrupted only occasionally for some good food and a good nap here and there. But my children and grandchildren skied and dutifully reported back at the end of each day in such vivid detail

that I felt like I had swooshed down from the summit but without the cold and the half-hour wait on the lift lines to get there. Now don’t get me wrong. I always loved to ski.

Why else would I have put up with the long drives, the absurd boots, the itchy hats and the running nose except for those few exhilarating moments when the view of the valley below from above the snow line is spectacular, the air is sharp and clear, the snow sparkles with sunlight in an unbroken trail before me and the deep silence assures me that the splendor is mine alone.

That said, age has its advantages, and I stayed warm and dry, letting subsequent generations enjoy the marvel of skiing.

We were there to celebrate my middle son’s 50th birthday. It became a tradition in our family, when my oldest son turned 50, that we would gather at the location of his choosing to properly mark the occasion together. This trip was not without its dangers but not from skiing. It was the drive up to the slopes on Friday that kept us on the edge of our seats in the car, peering into the

darkness. If you remember, the day began uncharacteristically warm, but as the hours went by, a deep freeze descended from the north and pushed into the warmer air, creating dense fog.

We crossed the Sound on the ferry, unable to see the shores, and actually missed the turnoff to the Merritt Parkway and thence Interstate 91 from Route 8 on the Connecticut side because the fog shrouded the signs above our heads on the roadway. That wasn’t of any great consequence as we continued on Route 8 to Interstate 84 East, a slightly longer stretch, but it did serve to warn us of what lay ahead.

We drove for the next couple of hours and the fog only seemed to intensify, but we were in good spirits anticipating the coming weekend’s festivities. We even stopped for a nice German dinner in Springfield, Massachusetts. What difference would a couple of extra hours make, we rationalized, since it was going to be dark anyway by the time we left the highway?

Initially driving wasn’t so difficult on Route 103, the first of the

back-country roads, because there were other cars snaking along, marking the contours of the road with the glow of red taillights. At one point a bus joined the parade in front of us, and that was dandy.

The real problems started when we turned onto Route 100 and left the bus behind. So dense was the fog that we missed the turn and had to circle back for a second try.

We were all alone from that point on, sometimes inching our way forward, straining to follow the yellow midline. Snowbanks lined the road, with only an occasional reflective marker to indicate a precipice off to the side. In that fashion, our hazard lights blinking noisily in the car to avoid anyone colliding with us, we traveled the next 24 miles. We knew we were climbing because our ears popped periodically, but we could see nothing of the mountains. We finally arrived at our lodging, a couple of hours later, in a glazed-eye stupor.

After that, simply skiing was a piece of cake. Birthday cake, that is.
