Sini sworn in as Suffolk’s new district attorney

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Though calendars and thermometers will provide unmistakable evidence that spring is still several months away, new hope sprung eternal in Suffolk County Jan. 2.

Tim Sini (D) was officially sworn in by U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-New York), the Senate minority leader, to begin his tenure as Suffolk County’s district attorney, a position Sini captured with a 26-point landslide Election Day victory over his Republican opponent Ray Perini.

Sini officially assumed the vacated position Tuesday, left open by his retired and federally indicted predecessor Tom Spota (D), during an inauguration ceremony at the Brentwood campus of Suffolk County Community College in front of town and county elected officials and friends and family of the new DA. Sini campaigned on restoring public faith to a position and office now synonymous with controversy and accusations.

Speakers including County Executive Steve Bellone (D), former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York David Kelley and co-chairman of Sini’s campaign and transition team and the newly inaugurated DA himself, each referred to his responsibility in restoring that faith as a primary

“The prosecutor’s mission at its core is not to seek convictions, but to seek justice,” Bellone said. “It is like many things that this person of deep faith believes to his core. Unfortunately in Suffolk County for too many years and in too many instances this truth has been overshadowed by self-dealing and chicanery. I can tell you with certainty, with as much certainty as one individual can hold, that this chain

is broken today — that a new era of integrity in the Suffolk County district attorney’s office has begun.”

Though their time in the Eastern District of New York didn’t overlap, Kelley served as the head of the U.S. Attorneys office, where Sini was an assistant U.S. attorney before returning to Suffolk, where Bellone eventually appointed him police commissioner. During his remarks, Kelley cited a quote from a 1935 Supreme Court

decision in which members of the court took a prosecutor to task for his conduct, indicating the quote was particularly relevant for Suffolk County and should remind Sini of his duties ahead.

“The prosecutor is the representative not of an ordinary party to a controversy, but of a sovereignty whose obligation to govern impartially is as compelling as its obligation to govern at all, and whose interest, therefore, in a criminal prosecution, is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done,” Kelley recited from the court’s findings. “As such, he is in a peculiar and very definite sense the servant of the law, the twofold aim of which is that guilt shall not escape or innocence suffer. He may prosecute with earnestness and vigor — indeed, he should do so. But, while he may strike hard blows, he is not at liberty to strike foul ones.”

The theme of Sini’s message during the ceremony was to look forward.

“Today marks the beginning — marks the moment that together, we usher in a new era of criminal justice in Suffolk County, one that ensures public safety, champions the law and promotes faith and trust in our law enforcement agencies,” he said.

“Each and every day the public will know that the Suffolk County district attorney’s office is doing the right thing.”

Suffolk Legislature passes campaign finance reform

BY KEVIN REDDING KEVIN@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Money for political candidates in Suffolk County could soon be coming from an unusual place.

With the passing of a new campaign finance reform bill by the Suffolk County Legislature, a bill that sets strict limits on the amount of money candidates can raise and spend on their races Page A22 while also establishing a fund of public dollars for candidates for office, its supporters hope for more competitive, diverse and publicfriendly local elections in the future. Those who oppose it, however, believe it will only add to the county’s dire financial problems.

Legislator Rob Calarco (D-Patchogue) sponsored the bill, A Charter Law Establishing a Fair Elections Matching Fund, approved in an 11-7 vote Dec. 19. It aims to set a public financing system in place for legislative candidates beginning in 2021 and county executive candidates in 2023.

Under the bill, which Calarco based on New York City’s matching funds program, legislative candidates wishing to receive public funds are limited to raising and spending $100,000 in total for an election.

To qualify to receive matching funds, he or she must raise at least $5,000 in small dollar donations of $250 or less from constituents within their district, allowing them to receive $50,000 in a 4-to-1 public match.

Editorial comment

While current law allows candidates to accept private donations between $1,600 and $3,000 from a single source, the new bill restricts that amount to $1,500.

When the bill takes effect, candidates running for county executive will not be able to raise or spend more than $2 million in total and will be limited to accepting $25,000 from a single source — roughly $20,000 less than current limitations. To qualify for matching funds, they must raise $25,000 from contributions of $250 or less for a 4-to-1 match totaling $250,000.

All matching dollars will be paid for by profits from a new source of revenue: the Suffolk Off-Track Betting Corp.’s video lottery terminals in Jake’s 58 Hotel & Casino in Islandia, projected to total $20 million per year, according to Calarco. He said he wants to have $1 million per year go toward financing the system. Those who opposed the bill, including Legislator Al Krupski (DCutchogue), argued against the funds coming directly from taxpayers and not being reinvested in the county’s economy.

Calarco said with the bill he aimed to dismantle the perception that elected officials are beholden to corporations and powerful people who are able to make large contributions to their campaigns and empower all residents to play a part in elections with small dollar donations. He said he also hopes it will encourage more grassroots candidates to rise up and challenge incumbents.

“At the end of the day, money alone doesn’t win a race,” Calarco said. “We are spending more and more money on these

Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) voted against the bill.

“It’s a sham,” Trotta said. “It will only make campaigns more expensive rather than less expensive and it’s using taxpayer money, which should be going toward our $2 billion debt. It’s a 2-second sound bite that sounds good to some people but the reality of it is that it limits nothing. It doesn’t limit how much Democrats or Republicans can pump into a campaign.”

Calarco said he expects the bill will soon be signed into law by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D).

Early in December, a post on the Facebook page Three Village Parents generated a lot of buzz. Many residents near Setauket Harbor reported seeing hunters and hearing shotguns in the area. One resident commented that she had seen pellet holes in her window, while another said she changes her jogging route during hunting season, which runs until Jan. 28 for ducks and Feb. 26 for geese.

Detained SBU professor released in Cameroon

Cameroon police detained Patrice Nganang, professor of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature at Stony Brook University, as he was leaving the country for Zimbabwe at Douala International Airport early in December. The detainment came after the Cameroonian-native and United States citizen published an article on the website Jeune Afrique. In the piece in question, the professor was critical of Cameroon President Paul Biya’s administration’s approach to the ongoing instability in Anglophone regions of Cameroon. Many have criticized the government’s response to citizen’s protests regarding marginalization in the regions Robert Harvey, a distinguished professor at SBU, said Nganang’s wife Nyasha notified him Dec. 27 of her husband’s hearing suddenly being changed from Jan. 19 to the morning of the 27th and that he was released and all charges dropped.

“No doubt all the pressure mobilized from various sectors helped,” Harvey said.

Dibussi Tande, a friend of Nganang’s for 10 years and one of the administrators of the Facebook page, Free Patrice Nganang, which has gained more than 2,200 followers, echoed Harvey’s sentiments.

“It is a feeling of relief and pride in the

amazing work done by a global team of human rights activists, journalists, civil society organizations, friends, family, etc., to bring pressure to bear on the government of Cameroon to set him free,” Tande said.

In a phone interview after his release, Nganang agreed that the pressure from outside of Cameroon, especially from the United States, played a part in his being set free earlier and being treated well while in prison.

He even was given meals from outside of the jail and didn’t have to eat prison food.

“The pressure not only led to my early release, it was also such that it gave me a better condition in jail so it made it possible for me to have a more humane condition,” Nganang said.

Among the charges Nganang faced were making a death threat against the president; forgery and use of forgery, due to the professor having a Cameroonian passport despite being a U.S. citizen, as the country does not recognize dual citizenship; and illegal immigration due to not having the proper papers as a U.S. citizen.

Dedicated to writing about the conditions in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon, Nganang said he was in the country for two weeks interviewing people. He said those in the western and English-speaking region of Cameroon must adhere to a 6 p.m. curfew, and the border to Nigeria is locked. He feels as a writer it’s his job to travel to the country and let people know what is going on there.

Stony Brook University professor Patrice Nganang was released Dec. 27 after being detained in Cameroon for three weeks.

He said he always understood he might be arrested one day, “because of the kind of work I do. I’m very critical, I’m outspoken, I write editorials, etc. I’ve expressed my opinions freely for 20, 30 years. So I have always been prepared to face justice at a certain point because Cameroon is obviously a tyranny.”

According to a statement from a spokesperson for U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), the congressman’s office had been in contact with the U.S. Department of State, Nganang’s family and Stony Brook University adminis-

trators during the professor’s detainment.

“In the face of an increasingly oppressive government, Professor Nganang has worked tirelessly for a better future for his country and family,” Zeldin said. “As Professor Nganang fights for the freedom of all Cameroonians, we fought for his. I look forward to his safe return home to his loved ones and the Stony Brook University community.”

Nganang is on leave from the university this academic year to attend to family business in Zimbabwe and to pursue a fellowship at Princeton University in the spring. During Nganang’s detainment, through a U.S. embassy representative, he sent a message to Harvey asking him to let his former students know that he hadn’t forgotten about their letters of recommendation.

Nganang said when he arrived at the airport in Washington D.C., he was greeted by a crowd of people, and he was given a ride home to Hopewell, New Jersey. The professor said he was grateful for the help he received from elected officials and representatives of the U. S. Embassy, and the support of his family, friends and neighbors. When he arrived home, he found friends at his house shoveling the driveway and filling his refrigerator.

“Coming out of jail after four weeks of a harsh ordeal and facing such an outpouring of love — my phone hasn’t stopped ringing since then because all my neighbors are concerned — guess what, it made a difference,” Nganang said.

Incidents and arrests Dec. 20–Jan. 1 Crime spree

A 45-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station stole a 2012 Honda from a home on Jefferson Boulevard in Port Jefferson Station Dec. 21 at about 12:30 p.m., fled from a police officer in the vehicle, swerving in and out of traffic and forcing others to make evasive maneuvers, according to police. When he eventually pulled over, he did not comply with officers instructions while being placed under arrest, police said. He was arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny, reckless driving, third-degree fleeing a police officer and resisting arrest.

Crystal clear

At about 3 p.m. Dec. 21, a 32-year-old man from Coram driving a 2005 Infiniti near the intersection of Route 347 and Crystal Brook Hollow Road in Port Jefferson Station was pulled over by police and discovered to be operating the car without a valid driver’s license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Nothing’s on

A 35-year-old man from Riverhead attempted to enter the maternity wing at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson Dec. 22. When he was denied entry, he broke a television in the waiting area, according to police. He was arrested and charged with criminal mischief.

Park and ride

At about 4 p.m. Dec. 26, a 26-year-old man from Centereach was driving a 2003 Volvo on Eastwood Boulevard in Centereach when he struck a parked car, according to police. Police discovered he was driving under the influence of a drug.

He was arrested and charged with firstdegree operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

Drug arrest

On Dec. 20 at about 9:30 p.m., a 32-year-old man from Coram and a 27-year-old woman from Ridge were seated in a 2003 Jeep on Middle Country Road in Centereach with heroin in the vehicle with the intention of selling it, according to police. They each were arrested and the man was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a narcotic drug and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. The woman was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Late-night shopper

At about 1 a.m. Nov. 17, a 33-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station broke the air conditioner unit and attempted to enter Hamlet Wines & Liquors in East Setauket to steal property from within, according to police. At about 2 a.m., he broke the window of Bottle Blow Out Wine & Liquor in Setauket and stole merchandise, police said. He was arrested Jan. 1 in Selden and charged with two counts of third-degree burglary.

Seven years bad luck

At about 11 p.m. Dec. 31, someone broke the window of a 2015 Nissan parked in the driveway of a home on Erik Drive in Setauket, according to police.

Two minutes for slashing

Two tires were slashed on a 2005 Chevrolet while it was parked on Joline Road in Terryville Dec. 30 at about 6 p.m., according to police.

These boots were made for walkin’

A pair of boots was stolen from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in Setauket Dec. 24 at about 4:30 p.m., according to police.

This is not a drill

Two drills were stolen from Brinkmann Hardware on Route 25A in Miller Place Dec. 30 at about 5:45 p.m., according to police.

In hot water

A resident of a home on Cambridge Drive in Port Jefferson Station hired someone to replace the hot water heater in the home, gave the contractor a portion of the money for the job upfront, and the work was never completed, according to police. A police report was filed Dec. 24 at about 2 p.m.

Warming up

A 2011 BMW left running in the driveway of a home on Sylvan Lane in Port Jefferson Station was stolen at about 11 p.m.

On Dec. 21, a 22-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station exited Walmart on Route 347 in East Setauket without paying for cosmetics she had in her possession, according to police. She was arrested in Port Jefferson Station and charged with petit larceny.

These selected students received letters of commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic performance, and

although they will not continue in the running for National Merit scholarships, they do have the chance to earn special scholarships sponsored by corporate businesses.

Wall of wonder

Seeking inspiration from the novelturned-movie, “Wonder,” fourth-grade students at Nassakeag Elementary School recently completed a multidimensional project focused on character development and the importance of kindness.

After reading the book, the students discussed how the characters changed throughout the course of the story and how their interactions with others helped to sway the students’ opinions of the characters.

Connecting to their grade-level English language arts curriculum, the students then

identified a precept from the “365 Days of Wonder” book that they identified with and created a “wall of wonder” in the fourthgrade hall using the precepts.

Additionally, they reflected on one of the themes of the book — the choice individuals often have of being right or being kind. The students noted what it means to choose kindness, when the choice between kindness and right may occur and why it is important to choose kindness.

In addition, the students in Miss Donato’s classroom created a class book of original precepts and how they are working to make a difference in the world.

Hats for a cause

Minnesauke Elementary School students in Patricia Wood’s sixth-grade class teamed up with the first-grade students in Jen Frole’s class to complete a purple-themed project to raise awareness and prevent shaken baby syndrome.

The students decorated 50 purple infant hats and created informative tags for new parents at St. Charles Hospital to help them remember that purple crying — the time in a baby’s life when it cries more than any other time — is just a phase, that it will pass and to ask for help.

S. Cromwell and her husband Richard H. Cromwell of Wayland, Massachusetts; and the late Fredrick E. Schmidt who died in 1982. He is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Schmidt spent his formative years in Michigan and lived many years in Setauket before moving to Wayland, Massachusetts in 1999. He received his master’s degree in physics in 1951 from the University of Michigan where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He began a long and distinguished career as a nuclear physicist with the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from 1950 to 1955. He was then associated with Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, from 1955 through 1979, and he completed his career with Brookhaven National Laboratory from 1979 until his retirement.

Schmidt served his country during World War II with the United States Army Air Corps in the 380th Med Coll Co. A

quiet man, Schmidt had many interests.

He was a Civil War history buff, was well versed in Shakespeare and was fascinated

by Egyptian history. In his early years, he excelled at chess and pool and he loved playing golf throughout his life. He loved a puzzle and could fix anything his family asked him to repair. He was devoted to Janet and to his family.

Private family interment will be held at a later date in the Setauket Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial gifts in Schmidt’s memory be sent to the Buddy Dog Humane Society, 151 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776, or to the Mary Ann Morse Healthcare Center, Patient Fund Account, 45 Union St., Natick, MA 01760.

OBITUARIES Fernanda Muller De Vargas

Fernanda Muller De Vargas died Dec. 9 at her home in Setauket. She had been diagnosed 18 months earlier with ovarian cancer.

De Vargas was born Dec. 27, 1962, in Taquara in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, but was a citizen of the world who spoke six languages and lived in nine different countries on four continents during her lifetime.

An artist by trade, and an artist by nature, she worked in various mediums, but specialized in batik. She exhibited her artwork around the world, and especially enjoyed giving classes and workshops for students, and exposing them to the myriad techniques of batik.

De Vargas saw the beauty in all things, and touched the lives of so many.

She is, was and always will be loved by her friends; her parents Dornelles and Marilene; her brothers Mauricio and Rodrigo; her husband Rob; and her children Francisco and Maya.

Eldon Schmidt

Eldon Schmidt, 91, formerly of Setauket, died peacefully and comfortably Dec. 15.

to her. Brazier says that’s always how her teammate plays. But the junior’s main focus is to face Commack again in Ward Melville territory.

“The loss brings us motivation to come back and go harder and beat them next time,” Hansen said. “We’ll bring a crowd next time, too.”

With Prahalis as the opposition to Commack, she enjoyed battling in her old stomping grounds.

“It felt good,” Prahalis said. “Ward Melville is my home now. I love Commack, I grew up there, but I’m where I’m supposed to be.”

Ward Melville’s next game is at Brentwood Jan. 5 at 4 p.m. The Patriots fall to 2-4 on the season with the loss while Commack improves to 7-1. The Cougars travel to William Floyd Jan. 5. Tipoff is currently scheduled for 4 p.m.

Former WNBA player, Commack graduate and current Ward Melville girls basketball coach Samantha Prahalis was frustrated and emotional on some calls the referee made while facing her alma mater Jan. 2. She received two technical fouls and was ejected in the middle of the fourth quarter in a 75-59 loss.

“I thought [the referees] missed a lot of calls,” Prahalis said. “If you let a few travels go, let a few backcourts go in a crucial time — we’re trying to come back, [and] there were a few big calls that I didn’t think were made.”

This is Prahalis’ first year as Ward Melville’s head coach. She was embarrassed that she was tossed, and said she has to do a better job of maintaining her composure.

“I can’t put myself in a situation and get a technical, and then [to] get another one,” she said. “Lesson learned. I learned from it and we’ll learn from it as a group and we’ll move on.”

Ward Melville junior guard Lauren Hansen felt that Prahalis was in hostile territory facing her old team.

“I felt that the refs were just gunning for her,” she said. “It’s Commack environment.”

Commack assistant head coach Russ Tietjen was with Prahalias at Commack last year when she was an assistant. He is aware of her emotions on the court that translated to her emotions as a player at Commack.

“Sammy was a great player here and you can see her intensity as a coach is very similar to when she played,” Tietjen said of Prahalis. “She had a Ward Melville team who was

ready to play; they played hard. That’s what good coaches do — they get their teams to play hard.”

Commack had several offensive weapons with four players scoring 16 points or more.

Meanwhile, for Ward Melville, Hansen recorded 39 points and was the only player in double figures for the Patriots.

Junior guards Amanda McMahon and Katie Kelly lead the Cougars with 18 points each. Senior Casey Hearns recorded 17 and classmate Kim Shalhoub added 16. They combined for 69 of Commack’s 75 points.

“We have a group of great shooters and we like to push the tempo,” Tietjen said. “When you’re making your baskets, it looks good. It looked good today. The level of competitiveness in these girls is second to none.”

Kelly enjoyed going up against her former assistant head coach. She says it ramps up the competition.

“Sammy is a very good competitor and loves to win as much as we do,” Kelly said. “It just makes the atmosphere that much better to play in. It make us want to win even more.”

Kelly’s learned her game from former player and point guard Jillian Spagnuola who graduated in 2016, when the team went 22-1.

Kelly is doing her best fill Spagnuola’s shoes.

“I learned everything from Jill,” Kelly said about her play style. “I learned how to run the point and organize the offense.”

After being down by at most 30, the Patriots went on a big run in the four quarter and cut the deficit to 12 after Prahalis was ejected. Senior forward Shannon Brazier said her coach ignited the spark.

“We just weren’t going to go down without a fight,” Brazier said. “We wanted to do it for coach and wanted to come back for her.”

Hansen’s scoring prowess is nothing new

Financial inspiration Suffolk County’s Legislature passed a law that will create a public financing system for candidates seeking elected offices in the county.

The bill will also create stricter limits on the amount of funds they can raise and spend. The overall goal of the legislation is to open doors for more candidates. If signed by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) in the next few weeks, the new law, modeled after election funds implemented in many parts of the country, will take effect beginning in 2021 for the majority of county candidates and 2023 for those running for county executive.

This past election year we met many newcomers to the political scene, some of whom said they were inspired by the 2016 presidential election. Creating a fund for those who may not have access to big donors is a great idea, which may provide more options when it comes to voting on Election Day. In an age where candidates seeking office have been criticized for accepting donations from wealthy, influential corporate heads and special interest groups, we feel the bill is a step in the right direction toward more allegiance to those that elected officials represent — the voters. Having the option to receive money from a public fund will hopefully inspire people to run for office who might not have otherwise.

If Bellone signs the bill, for those who wish to receive public funds, raising and spending of money on campaigns for county positions will be limited to $100,000 in total for an election, or in the case of county executive, $2 million. The bill restricts the maximum amount from one source to $1,500 for a legislative campaign, or $25,000 for county executive. Currently, candidates can receive anywhere from $1,600 to $3,000 from one source depending on their district; the new executive limit is approximately $20,000 less than in previous years.

A fund will also be set up for candidates who raise at least $5,000 in small dollar donations of $250 or less from residents in their district, essentially allowing for the public financing of Suffolk elections. The fund will allow those running for office to receive up to $50,000 in a 4-to-1 matching money. For county executive candidates, he or she must raise at least $25,000 from contributions of $250 or less for a 4-to-1 match up to $250,000.

The matched funds will come from the county’s share of the profits from Suffolk Off-Track-Betting. According to the county’s 2016 annual financial report, OTB’s capital asset net was $26,714,106. Due to the county’s current deficit, many criticizing the bill feel the money could be better utilized elsewhere. While we agree there are many areas the OTB funds can be used, this is one way to raise the money for the matching election-funding program. Considering that the new process may open the doors to a broader range of candidates, our hope is that this incentive will bring new and better solutions to the county in regard to the financial crisis and other issues in the near future.

Remembering Bob de Zafra We recently heard of the passing of Bob de Zafra. He was not only an outstanding scientist, but a real asset to our community.

In the 50 years we have lived here, Bob was involved in a host of activities to save open land,

keep our air and water clean and free from pollutants and preserve open space. He gave tirelessly of his time, energy and expertise for the benefit of the Three Village area. It will be difficult to find someone of Bob’s skill and deter-

mination to carry on the fight to save what makes our community such a fine place to live.

Hopefully, his example will inspire others.

Agreeing with Arrigon on Trump I want to congratulate and thank Bob Arrigon for his fine letter, “Fact-check Trump’s statements,” in the Nov. 30 issue of The Village Times Herald, in which he correctly criticized and showed completely justifiable contempt for Donald Trump.

Clearly, Mr. Arrigon was quite correct to view this president as disgraceful and unendurable.

I myself view Mr. Trump as a menace to our people, completely unfit for the office he holds, disgustingly and childishly narcissistic, rude, prejudiced, ignorant, money mad, a degrader of women, an insulter of people of various ethnic origins, religions

and races — even of people with handicaps. Furthermore, he has shown himself to be tolerant of, and even enthusiastic about, disgusting anti-Semitic neo-Nazis (remember Charlottesville?) and racist Ku Klux Klan thugs, who seem to admire him.(How easy it is to prove these accusations.)

For the sake of our nation and our allies, I fervently pray that this embarrassing president will soon be impeached, tried and found guilty of conduct that will legally require him to quit the White House. He has zero qualifications to be a good leader. He is a liar and an egomaniac; he is also supportive of

corrupt, greedy industries that are polluting our air, water and land so as to stuff their greedy pockets with dirty big bucks while seriously degrading the health of 300 million Americans.

I am absolutely certain that Donald Trump will be regarded by future generations as the worst president we have ever had to endure. The only good thing he has done (without realizing it) has been to demonstrate how much finer, wiser, more intelligent and far more caring about our land and our people Barack Obama was.

Thank you to Three Village school retirees Dear Three Village Community, I want to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank the Retirees Association of the Three Village Central School District for their extremely generous donation of over $3,000 to help our needy families.

Each year the number of families in need grows in this community. Social workers in

each of the eight schools coordinate collections throughout the buildings each season and rely on staff donations. Even though people give generously, it is simply not enough to meet the demands. Most buildings average approximately 15 families that they collect for.

Many people don’t realize that even a thriving commu-

nity like Three Village has many needy families. I speak for all of the school social workers and staff in saying thank you to the retirees from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support and service for our community.

On Colbert, Oppenheimer and fame

M

y family and I waited in the airport immigration line, eager to get back to our house, unload our suitcases and throw in the first of numerous loads of laundry.

We hoped our poor washing machine, which got a much-needed break, was up to the task.

When we reached the front of the line, a young man with a broad smile and a far-off look in his eyes greeted us.

“Hi,” we both said, trying to follow his gaze.

“Happy New Year.”

“You know who Stephen Colbert is?” he asked, realizing that we were star-

My wife and I responded quickly in the affirmative, worried that this was a new kind of national identity test.

“He’s up there,” the young man said, pointing to the escalator. “If you hurry, you can catch him.”

We took back our passports and immediately kicked into a higher gear.

We got to the bottom of the escalator and scanned the room. Wait! Could it be? Yes! The man, who is beamed into our bedroom on an occasional evening when we’re not watching sports, was standing in front of us under a baseball cap, waiting, as we were, for his luggage so he could move on with his famous life.

What is it about celebrities that makes us stop in our tracks, that raises our pulse, that makes us want to take out our cameras, pens and paper, and rush over to them? Do we want to share the spotlight? Do celebrities define an era, the way winning sports teams do?

Most unscripted celebrities seem considerably less interesting or com-

pelling than they do when they’re battling against evil empires, winning our hearts with their humble charm or learning to overcome their limitations.

It’s what makes those award shows so fascinating, compelling and terrifying. What if one of these actors who has impressed us with his gravitas suddenly freezes in the camera or, worse, says something we find objectionable?

What if they aren’t as wonderful as the characters they play?

We watched Colbert as he dove deep into his electronic device, head down, hat pulled low. He rarely looked up because he probably didn’t want anyone to “make” him, the way police officers make a suspect.

As Colbert exited, my phone rang.

I spoke to the person who was picking us up, hung up and snapped a picture of the talk show host, who looked displeased that my phone was tracking him.

I suppose being a celebrity has its advantages and disadvantages. People might otherwise extend themselves for you, hoping to share in the spotlight or

become friends. The downside? People want to capture their live moment with you, when you are eager to glide past the unwashed masses.

Long ago, I remember reading an anecdote about Robert Oppenheimer.

After people learned of his role as the creator of the atomic bomb and leader of the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer was asked his opinion on a range of subjects. People attached greater weight to his opinions, even in areas for which he had limited information. The man who helped split the atom limited his responses to future questions, preferring to remain anonymous in areas outside his expertise.

Today, with cameras everywhere and people eager to learn about the view of the world from on high, being quiet or ducking under a hat must be increasingly challenging. Yes, I know people like Colbert make incredible amounts of money, but I also appreciate how difficult it must be to stay incognito while rushing home with several loads of laundry.

research and repeated urgings in the media, data reveals that most Americans are sleep deprived. With so much to do each day, it is too easy to cut down sleep time. That might work for a day or two, but research shows that it is not possible to make up for lost hours in the long term. So don’t use your computer just before you go to bed, don’t even watch TV. Something about the light from those home essentials interferes with the urge to sleep.

Try to go to bed more or less the same time each night and wake up the same time each morning. Habit is a great helper. And if you tend to wake up in the middle of the night with the many chores you have for the next day ping-ponging around inside your head, put the bedside light on, make a to-do list with a pencil on a pad you have ready next to your bed, then turn off the light, and having discharged your memory, you can fall back to sleep until morning.

Another good thing to do is to eat foods with lots of fiber. “A diet of fiberrich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, reduces the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.

Indeed, the evidence for fiber’s benefits extends beyond any particular ailment,” according to a recent science article by Carl Zimmer in The New York Times.

People who eat more fiber simply have lower odds of dying. Somehow fiber is able to reduce inflammation in the body. Long-term inflammation can cause harm, although short-term inflammation does fight infection. How fiber works is a bit of a mystery because it is not directly digestible. There is a connection between fiber and the billions of bacteria that live in our guts. In essence, we feed our microbes fiber to enable them to strengthen our immune systems. Take it on faith and don’t ask me more.

One issue that is, of course, most distressing to me is that of fake news.

Be assured, please, that whatever you might read in our hometown papers and on our well-read website, is fact and as true as we know it to be. If we err, we will correct.

Let’s keep in mind the old Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times. It may be a negative for some, but for journalists, it provides jobs.

Sleep, eat and be well in 2018

No more Christmas celebrations, no more vacation days, no more New Year’s parties, we’re back to the real world. And what a real world it is. The North Koreans have a button.

We have a bigger button that works.

Meanwhile both leaders have strange haircuts.

Primarily young people are rioting throughout Iran as the rulers threaten a violent crackdown.

The war in Afghanistan, our longest war, slogs on, with no end in sight. Brutality, death, starvation and proxy wars rage throughout the Middle East and northern Africa.

By contrast, here in America, more people line up to sue Harvey Weinstein for sexual harassment or worse each day. Icons fall, Democrats and Republicans squabble, Republicans and Republicans squabble, governors and accountants strategize how to navigate the new tax laws, and we in Suffolk County are warned to hunker down in the face of a fierce and imminent nor’easter bringing tons of snow.

Enough already! Here’s what I say to all of that. Let’s focus on the things we have some hope of controlling and stand by to help with the rest. What do we actually control? We can start with ourselves.

On the threshold of this new year, we can pay more attention to our health. Everyone quite rightly wishes friends and family “a healthy and happy New Year.” Good things start with good health. Wishing won’t make it happen. Action will.

Most important, to me, along with lots of health professionals, is enough sleep of good quality. This strengthens the immune system, cognitive function and minimizes wrinkles — well, the first two anyway. Yet despite the
