Fire Dept. stuffs bus for families in need By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Local families in need have a group of Miller Place volunteers, generous strangers and a big red bus to be thankful for this holiday season. Cold, windy weather did nothing to stop Miller Place Fire Department members from gathering outside Stop & Shop at 385 Route 25A for five hours last weekend. In fact, the dozen volunteer EMS members, engine company officers and firefighters were all smiles as they collected 800 pounds of nonperishable items from passing shoppers, whose contributions were packed into a fire department bus and dropped off to St. Louis de Montfort R.C. Church in Sound Beach the next morning. Canned food, condiments, paper towels and much more stock the shelves at the church’s food pantry for Miller Place, Sound Beach and Mount Sinai families struggling to make ends meet. The donations will help them have a proper Thanksgiving. “The outpouring is always incredible — people here are just amazing,” said Debi Rasweiler, a former captain of EMS at the fire department and organizer of the 7th annual EMS Stuff-A-Bus Nov. 17, which ran from 3 to 8 p.m. “Last year we stuffed the bus from floor to ceiling, rear to front. It just grows every year.”

During the event, shoppers on their way into the supermarket were handed a list of items needed for the pantry — including pasta, dry cereal, canned vegetables, soaps and toothpaste — and asked to donate if possible. It didn’t take long before residents wheeled their carts over to the bus to chip in. Some dropped off one or two items while
others outdid themselves, handing over full bags of groceries and cash. “I just think we all have to give back,” said Shoreham resident Peggy Debus, who donated peanut butter, jelly and cereal. “When people stop giving back, the world gets very bad.” John Barile from Mount Sinai, who handed over paper towels, said he takes any
opportunity he can to help others who need it. “If everybody gave something, we would never have any problems,” Barile said. When asked what inspired her to donate multiple items, another shopper simply said, “It’s the right thing to do.” Stephen Rasweiler, Debi’s husband and

New groups re-forming out of North Brookhaven chamber By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tbrnewspapers.com Plans for the future of businesses formerly joined under the North Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce are coming into focus in the wake of the organization’s dissolution. The North Brookhaven chamber is disbanding, leaving behind smaller chambers for area communities, an idea that already existed before the formation of the now dissolved chamber. Wading River, Shoreham, Rocky Point, Miller Place, Sound Beach, Mount Sinai, Port Jefferson Station and Terryville originally had businesses forming smaller chambers before the lack of membership forced the groups to consolidate. Many point to Port Jefferson Station business owner
Jennifer Dzvonar as the reason the nine year North Brookhaven chamber has remained afloat. Dzvonar will head up the Port Jefferson Station-Terryville Chamber of Commerce. “We were losing membership because we were too spread out and some of our members were concerned,” said Carol Genua of Coach Realtors in Mount Sinai. “What Jen did is phenomenal and for her to do it that long I can’t even comprehend how much time she had to put in, and her husband and kids were even helping out.” Barbara Ransome, president of Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce Coalition, which represents almost 20 town chambers who is also director of operations for the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce in the village, said she thinks the group made the right decision to reorganize its efforts.

“We all sat around the table saying, ‘OK, what’s the next move?’” she said. “There was a strong consensus that there needed to be some level of consolidation. I’m very happy that Jen is not dropping out. She’s trying her very best, she’s the glue that’s keeping it together right now.” Ransome said smaller membership will mean less money, so the chambers will have to be frugal in their operating budgets. “People will volunteer when it is beneficial to them and their business, which, often times, will be within their direct surrounding area town,” Dzvonar said in an email. “Many are just too busy trying to keep their local business alive. Chain stores, big box stores, online shopping and outsourcing are what is killing local businesses. However, the small local businesses are the ones supporting the communities and donating to the fundraisers in the schools and other local organizations, with minimal loyalty from the consumers.” Some are concerned the same issues may arise with the new arrangement as the ones that plagued the larger chamber. “What happens is a lot of merchants join, but don’t take part in the work that needs to be done — people don’t realize it,” said Millie Thomas, of Landmark Realty in Wading River, who used to belong to the Rocky Point chamber when she owned a business there before joining the Wading River-Shoreham Chamber of Commerce prior to it combining with the North Brookhaven chamber. “What happens is a lot of people want to join the chamber, they pay their dues and they get their name out on the brochures, but when it comes time to do all the work it seems the same specific people do it every year and it gets overwhelming, because we’re all running businesses and trying to do all of these things too.” Thomas used the example of Wading River’s Duck Pond Day to make her point. The realtor said putting together the event, which started as a wetlands coastline cleanup effort at the pond and has grown into a picnic following the cleanup with vendors, a parade and a 5K walk/run, takes a lot of time. She has to go to the town and fill out paperwork and pay fees for permits when needed, contact two different police departments to close off the roads, gather vendors, organize everyone involved in the parade and get sponsors whose names go on T-shirts. “Someone needs to get involved to make all of these things happen — they don’t happen by themselves,” Thomas said. Genua, who will be working with Donna Boeckel of Awsomotive Car Care to start up the Mount Sinai chamber, which may include Miller Place businesses, agreed that part of the problem was trying to support everything from Port Jefferson Station to Wading River. She’s hoping the step back in time will help regrow a better base of home businesses in hopes of recharging that community connection. Genua is currently working on creating a list of all of the businesses in the area to make contact with, and already has reached out to local fish markets, restaurants, cleaners and the new Heritage Pharmacy drug store to generate more interest and enrollment. She said she is hoping to bring in local parent teacher organizations and even Heritage Park to create a chamber more entrenched in the community. “We want to try a new way to get businesses involved,” she said. “We all still have to support each other. My husband had his own business for a while and it’s hard to compete with the big box companies. We want to keep our money local instead of it going out of state. We’re also neighbors. The people who live here, work here, or a lot of them.” Marie Stewart of Brooklyn Bagels will be pushing forward with her already in existence Rocky Point local business owners group and is welcoming chamber members from Rocky Point and Sound Beach. Dzvonar will lead the Port Jefferson StationTerryville chamber with help from Sheila Wieber of Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Diane Jensen of Teachers Federal Credit Union. Thomas will be reforming the Shoreham-Wading River chamber once again. All of which will take place in the new year. “If you have the heart of a volunteer, it’s well worth it,” Thomas said. “Helping to adopt a family and provide relief to a single mom with four kids, or to see children and their families getting excited when Santa is coming down the street on the fire truck, it’s very rewarding. It is a lot of work, but sometimes people get caught up with their daily routine and don’t want to volunteer, and that’s the problem.” Alex Petroski contributed reporting

Long Islanders flocked to Mount Sinai’s Cedar Beach Nov. 18 to take a dip into freezing water with purpose. The 8th annual Polar Plunge raises money for Special Olympics New York athletes as plungers take a dip or slow crawl into the chilly waters of the Long Island Sound. Special Olympics New York has 71,889 athletes training and competing year-round in 22 Olympics-style sports. Athletes and their families or caregivers are never charged to participate. It costs $400 to support training and competition for one athlete for one sports season. This year’s Town of Brookhaven event has raised more than $110,000. Team Extraordinary has accumulated the most to date, with funds totaling almost $11,000.
Stuff-A-BuS Continued from page A3 a lifelong volunteer firefighter, voiced his appreciation for the community as he held up a donated bag of yams and turkey stuffing. “This is somebody’s Thanksgiving dinner just in one bag,” he said, beaming. “This time of year is very stressful, the economy’s tough for a lot of families and we know we’re helping a lot of people. It’s sad that this is needed but it’s been a great department and community effort.” It was the Rasweiler’s daughter Jessica who initially brought Stuff-A-Bus to the community seven years ago after being involved in a similar event with her sorority at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. When she came home from college, and joined the fire department as an EMT, Rasweiler was determined to adopt the donateand-transport event.

She got local businesses to sponsor it and went door-to-door from Setauket to Wading River to spread the word. As a full-time nurse at St. Catherine of Siena in Smithtown, she was unable to be at this year’s event, but said over the phone that the event’s continued success makes her heart smile. “I wanted to do more for the community,” she said. “I knew we could do something greater than just wait for the whistle to blow for any kind of call that we get at the fire department. I just can’t believe it and it’s amazing the community has just latched onto it. It’s a very special event.” For Bobby Chmiel, 2nd Lieutenant of EMS, the Stuff-A-Bus is a highlight every year. “It’s not just residents helping people, it’s helping people they might know,” he said. “They could be your friends or neighbors. The community in Miller Place and Sound Beach will unite around a common cause. When it’s one of our own that needs help, especially during the holiday season, we’re there.” On Nov. 18, the big red bus delivered its boxes upon boxes of items to the church. The various foods were stacked into the church’s pantries and will be given out to families, many of whom the church takes care of year-round. “It’s a blessing and I can’t thank them enough,” said Jane Guido, St. Louis de Montfort’s outreach coordinator. “The families are very appreciative because a lot of them wouldn’t’ be able to put that kind of spread on their table for a holiday. It’s just too costly. People are so generous — we get plenty of stuff that holds us through the year — without their help, our pantry would be bare.” After all the boxes were brought inside, Debi Rasweiler announced that on top of the food, one resident who asked to be anonymous donated $1,400 worth of Visa gift cards. “It was a single parent who had been needy for a long time,” Rasweiler said. An emotional Guido hugged her. “Thank you, thank you, thank you everybody,” Guido said.

Driving on drugs
A 24-year-old man from Middle Island was driving a 2014 Toyota on Main Street in Port Jefferson Station near the intersection of Oakland Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. Nov. 16 when he was involved in a crash, according to police. After the accident police discovered he was driving under the influence of a drug, police said. He was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.
Trying to fight it
At about 10 p.m. Nov. 16, a 47-year-old woman from Miller Place was driving a 2016 Chevrolet on Parkside Avenue in Miller Place when she was involved in a crash with a parked car, according to police. Officers on the scene following the crash determined she was driving while intoxicated, police said. She was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, and during her arrest she refused to adhere to verbal commands and physically resisted officers from putting her hands behind her back and in handcuffs, police said. She was also charged with resisting arrest.
Gas up and go
At BP gas station on Route 25A in Rocky Point Nov. 14 at about 11:30 a.m., a 20-yearold woman from Patchogue filled a 2002 Saturn with gas and fled the station without paying, according to police. She was arrested and charged with petit larceny.
Move over
At about 1 a.m. Nov. 17, a 22-year-old man from Stony Brook driving a 2006 BMW south on Nicolls Road in Stony Brook failed to move over for two stopped emergency vehicles with their lights and sirens engaged, according to police. The driver was pulled over and police determined he was driving while under the influence of a drug, police said. He was arrested and charged with firstdegree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

A 41-year-old undomiciled man entered Speedway gas station on Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook Nov. 18 at about 9 a.m., displayed a handgun and forcibly stole money, according to police. He was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery.

At Ruvo East restaurant on Wynn Lane in Port Jefferson, someone entered and stole two empty beer kegs at about 11 p.m. Nov. 17, according to police.

Northport man dies installing cesspool in Shoreham Village Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating an incident in which a Northport man was killed after he became trapped underground during the installation of a cesspool. A crew was installing a cesspool at a Shoreham home, located on Josephine Boulevard, when the ground gave way trapping Kurt Peiscopgrau, 60, at approximately 11:25 a.m. Nov. 18. Peiscopgrau’s body was recovered by Emergency Service
Section police officers at 3:15 p.m., according to police. The officers were assisted in the recovery by members of the Rocky Point, Hagerman and Brookhaven National Lab fire departments, as well as several additional fire departments and employees of the Suffolk County Department of Public Works. Flashy Filippetti leads Miller Place to win By Bill landon Miller Place’s Panthers made a stand. The football team’s defense rose to the occasion when the Suffolk County championship title was on the line in a 25-25 game with just under two minutes left to play. As No. 1-seeded Babylon barreled toward the end zone at Stony Brook University Nov. 16, No. 2 Miller Place’s defense forced a turnover on fourth-and-8 at their 34-yard line, and Anthony Seymour scored a touchdown on the ensuing possession to put the Division IV game away, 33-25. The win clinched Miller Place’s first football title since the championships began in 1992.

At the heart of it all was 5-foot, 3-inch senior Anthony Filippetti, who made the stop to force the turnover and followed it up by getting behind the secondary for a 27-yard reception to the Babylon 6 to set up the final score. The catch came after Seymour was sacked for a 7-yard loss. To cap the championship-winning drive, Seymour faked a handoff to Tyler Ammirato heading over right tackle, and bolted off left tackle for a 3-yard rush into the end zone that snapped a 25-all tie with 21 seconds left. “After we stopped them on downs I looked at [Seymour] and said, ‘If we don’t get in the end zone I’m never talking to you again,’” Ammirato said jokingly. “But he did, and we got the win. It’s the best feeling in the world.” The county title-winning drive started with 1:45 left. Ammirato, a Seymour-to-Tom Nealis connection and Filippetti helped the Panthers drive 66 yards in seven plays. “With our playmaker — Nealis — it’s comforting to know that you have a kid like that,” Miller Place head coach Greg Murphy said. “It makes you feel that you’re never really out of it. He’s been doing that all year long.” Filippetti scored the first Miller Place touchdown of the evening on a 54-yard run on the second play from scrimmage and Cameron Hammer’s kick tied it at 7 with 7:43 left in the first quarter. Babylon capped the first with another touchdown, but the point-after attempt failed, making the lead 13-7 heading into the second. Seymour and Nealis were at it again to open the second, with Nealis catching a 34yard pass from his field general. The teams were tied again when the Panthers’ pointafter attempt also went wayward. Nealis hauled in a 54-yard pass and run soon after, being forced out at the 2-yard line

The kicks failed on both and the scores were separated by a Babylon touchdown. “In the beginning of the game we ran the ball trying to establish the ground game to eat up the clock,” Murphy said. “We needed that a little bit trying to get Tyler [Ammirato] going.” Matt McNulty charged the Babylon holder after its final score and pulled off the block, which shifted momentum Miller Place’s way. “It was just a big moment — I had to pick up my teammates, I just had to do what I could,” the defensive end said. “I was hyped — I wanted that ball back and a chance to make a play and that’s what happened. We knew that the toughest defense was going to win today and making a stop like that in a championship game is what it’s all about.” Miller Place (10-1) will meet Seaford (9-2) Nov. 24 at noon at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium in its first appearance in the Long Island Class IV championship game.

This holiday season I’m thankful for the water I drink, the air I breathe and the love in my heart. I’m grateful for the nine wonderful years I got to spend with my beautiful brown-eyed corgi Lucy, which warms me more than any fireplace ever could; my best friend and partner-in-crime Joey who has helped me learn and grow; and for my strong, independent mother who is my model, my teacher and guiding light.

This Thanksgiving I’m grateful for the basic necessities of life such as a roof over my head, clothes on my back, food and clean water to nourish me and, most important of all, the good health enjoyed by me and my loved ones. Latinos have a long history in the states Efforts of the Trump administration to deport many hardworking, fine Latinos are highly offensive. It is important to note that certain ethnic groups, such as the people we call Latinos, came to this hemisphere long before other Europeans, except for some brave Scandinavian explorers who explored the Northeast coast. Just look at the names of towns and villages and states, etc., especially in the West. So many names are Spanish: California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, San Antonio, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Sacramento, San Diego and on and on. The huge Spanish or Latino influence in this country came into existence many decades before other Europeans began to arrive. The Spanish were the first Europeans to inhabit the Western Hemisphere— led by an Italian, Columbus. America was named after another Italian, Amerigo Vespucci, I proudly say, since I am of Italian descent. With a few exceptions, people from Spain
inhabited almost all the countries south of us, from Mexico to Chile. Spanish is the leading language there. The Spanish even founded the first permanent city in North America: St. Augustine, in Florida (and “Florida” is a Spanish word) and inhabited areas of our far west and southwest long before other Europeans arrived and decades before the United States was established. Thus, the Spanish are in no sense strangers or newcomers to this land. It is outrageous for the Trump administration to mistreat Spanish immigrants so shabbily — by tightening or introducing unfriendly and quasi-prejudicial rules or by building hateful walls. The Spanish have made a huge mark on our country and an even greater one on the countries south of us. Of course, let’s not forget that our Native Americans, whom we should greatly respect but who have been terribly treated, had already been in North and South America for millennia before Europeans. That
is another story. The Trump administration’s attitude towards Latinos is a sickening, moral crime. I suggest that Mr. Trump go revisit the Statue of Liberty, an immense and outstandingly thoughtful gift from France, and read Emma Lazarus’ words: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” That is America’s primary reason for existence. Let people come here to establish better lives for themselves. Every American is either from another country or is the descendant of people from another country. Let’s remember what our Declaration of Independence correctly says — that we are all equals. No ethnic or racial or religious group is superior to any other. Study America’s history, Mr. Trump, and stop your disgraceful, embarrassing, thoughtless, antiAmerican actions.

opinion From nicknames to myselfisms, a not-so-thankful list

ere we are, Thanksgiving Day, and I’d like to share some things I’m not thankful for. I recognize, of course, all that I do have to be thankful for, but in this moment and in this year it seems fitting to make a not-so-thankful list. Nicknames: They’ve become ubiquitous. I never liked the nicknames Joe Girardi had for all the Yankees, usually adding a “y” at the end of their last names. Why? Is Gardner too hard to say? I’m also not a huge fan of the By Daniel Dunaief nicknames the president of the only country not in the Paris climate accord has given to all his adversaries and nemeses. I ask, in all sincerity, does the man

occupying the White House who gets to fly on Air Force One have a positive nickname for anyone? Does he, for example, call anyone “Superstar” or “Force of Nature,” or simply “Champ”? Does he think anyone is a “dynamo,” “real winner” or “miracle”? No, I suspect he doesn’t because that might mean that their superpowers would be comparable or, gasp, stronger than his. Pundits: Everyone on TV, in the comment section of news articles and on the internet seem to know better than everyone else. Some of these pundits seem to be playing a game of mad libs where they change the names, dates and details about their punditry, but their perspectives and their “shame, shame, shame, he’s a bad Democrat/ Republican” outrage get old incredibly quickly. If you have no new thoughts, then don’t pretend to offer something new. I’d enjoy it if a newscaster said, “And now we’re going to turn to someone that hates Republicans who, no

doubt, will offer an oversized portion of outrage.” Fake news: It’s a convenient label for those who don’t like what they hear. It’s a way to undermine the messenger. I know there are news organizations who play fast and loose with the facts. There are also members of the media who have made a point of blending editorial and news, decrying the lack of moral — or even logical — leadership in Washington. Still, many reporters are eager to find facts and to give people a chance to make decisions for themselves. Ultimately, many journalists are serving society by shining lights in dark corners and by sharing information that informs the public. Without the news, people would need to rely on official sources to tell them their version of the truth. That doesn’t sound very democratic. taste so good and why can’t I stop at just one or six pieces? Can’t they add string beans or cauliflower to the pie to make it slightly less palatable? Misspellings and myselfisms: I know that seems incredibly elitist and English-language snobby of me, but I bristle at emails urging me to do something before it’s too late. I would like to reply that it’s “to” late to correct their emails. As for the “myself” problem, I have heard someone say several times in the last few weeks, “If you have a problem, you should talk to Ted or myself.” Really? My problem is that if you took Ted out of that sentence, you’d be suggesting people talk to myself. Teenage odors: Yes, I know the teenagers are growing, their hormones are surging and they are some of the most active people on Earth. Still, get a group of them in a room, in a car or in any confined space and you might long for the innocent days of diapers and spit-up.
