Roads repaved for start of school

By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tbrnewspapers.com A substantial 10-road paving project near Miller Avenue Elementary School in Shoreham has been completed.

Costing $873,850, town crews came out to replace and install 8,100 square feet of aprons, 11,276 square feet of sidewalk and 6,450 feet of curbing. In addition, new handicap ramps were installed and a turning lane was created on the north end of Miller Avenue at the intersection of North Country Road, according to Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro (R).

“This project was coordinated to coincide with construction of the parking lot at Miller Avenue Elementary School,” Losquadro said.

“We successfully completed the paving and re-striping of Miller Avenue just in time for school to resume last week. In addition to Miller Avenue, several of the residential roadways in this paving project were in severe need of replacement. I am glad to provide some relief for residents, motorists, teachers and staff in the Shoreham-Wading River school district who travel these roadways on a daily basis.”

Roads paved during this project include Miller Avenue, James Annex, James Street, School Court, Jomar Road, Cross Court, Duchess Street, Knight Street, Reynolds Road and Royal Way. “Under Superintendent Losquadro’s leader-

Parent asks Mount Sinai board to move fifth-graders Mother urges a switch back to elementary school

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Students in Mount Sinai are expected to grow up a little faster than those in other districts. While a majority of neighboring towns keep their fifth-graders in the elementary school, Mount Sinai, since the early 1990s, moves its 10- and 11-year-olds up to the middle school.

A mother challenged the concept during an Aug. 23 board of education meeting when she asked administrators to consider making fifth grade part of the elementary school again in the future.

The conversation has been ongoing ever since.

Renee Massari, a mother of two elementary school students, proposed the idea last month, saying she didn’t see the academic or social benefit of having fifth-graders learn under the same roof as eighth-graders. In fact, she believed the drastically different environment negatively affected the young students — who occupy their own wing on the second floor of the building.

“I’ve seen it through many of my friends’ children here — many of them don’t excel,” Massari said during the meeting. “It’s almost like they feel deflated because it’s difficult for them to handle those responsibilities expected of our fifth-graders. Because [realistically],

they aren’t middle schoolers.”

Massari explained to the board that, from her understanding, the fifth-graders’ premature graduation to the middle school was prompted solely by a lack of classroom space in the elementary school. She asked if an administrator could evaluate current classroom space, adding the school has seen a declining enrollment rate over the last few years.

“Ideally, I would love for the fifth-graders in this district to have the same transition that 99 percent of the districts on Long Island have,” Massari said. “We can house them in the elementary school, a building they’re familiar with, and keep the same program where they transition from classroom to classroom and get them exposed to that before going to a whole different building.”

Board Trustee Robert Sweeney agreed with Massari and said the decision decades ago to move the students into the next building had nothing to do with education and everything to do with space and misjudgment. He also urged the board to reevaluate the concept.

“It’s a fallacy to have elementary students up there,” Sweeney said. “I think we have to look at it because there’s no educational benefit [to it].”

Superintendent Gordon Brosdal, an admittedly “old school guy” who said he would even like to see the sixth grade in the elementary school, told Massari her proposal would

“But in the meantime, what we have to do is make sure the nurturing environment continues in the fifth grade,” Brosdal said.

“Plus, they’re kind of isolated and not mixing with the older grades when they don’t have to,” he said. “At the same time, I understand parents feel their kids are not ready to move up because of maturity and a lot of other reasons, and want them to remain in a nurturing environment.”

Residents speak in support of Miller Place DDI house

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Residents in and around Miller Place are rushing to the defense of a group home for adults with autism and other developmental disabilities that will soon open on Henearly Drive after some neighbors said they didn’t want the facility on their block.

The neighbors, interviewed earlier this Page A22 month, said they believe the Developmental Disabilities Institute home — which will house six, low-functioning autistic adults over 21 years old and full-time staff members — will damage the family-friendly community’s quality of life by increasing traffic flow and lowering property values of homes on the street.

“It doesn’t make any sense — why you would put this in the middle of a neighborhood, how is that fair?” said Janice Simon, a Henearly Drive resident.

Her concerns were not aimed at the six individuals who will live in the home, she said, but the overcrowding of vehicles and possible dumpsters around the property. Other neighbors agreed, adding unease toward the group home’s rotation of employees.

“I don’t want strangers up and down my block … all day and night,” one resident said. “[With] everybody smoking and on

Sound Beach resident Patti Kozlowski, who previously lived in Miller Place, said she was horribly ashamed by the comments made by residents on Henearly Drive.

“I say, if you don’t want a group home next door to you, let your neighbors vote to see if they want you to be next door to them,” Kozlowski said. “They key word is group home. It’s the home for people to live.

It needs to be a big house in a nice neighborhood. That’s where it belongs.”

Eileen Walsh said no one is better than anyone else.

“We can and should all learn a lesson in kindness and acceptance from DDI residents,” she wrote on the Facebook page. “The only people upset about this are selfish elitists.”

Rich Pistone said the residents on Henearly aren’t setting a good example.

“Teach your children diversity [and] that we occupy this planet with many other people … some a tad bit different than the norm,” he wrote. “Residents on Henearly better get over themselves.”

Suzanne Cloke said the comments made by the residents on Heanerly Drive do not speak for the entire community. “[The original] article put a bad taste in my mouth, making Miller Place look like a town full of horrible people that would steal candy from a baby’s mouth,” she said.

The Pond View Estates project, which the civic estimates won’t be completed for another two years, was chosen in the past over single-family housing because, Becker said, the town didn’t have the same level of density of senior complexes as it currently has.

“That was the last one we thought would be appropriate,” she said, adding that any time the developers discussed the project at a civic meeting, residents were excited about it.

In the late 1990s, a lawsuit was filed against the Town of Brookhaven by the civic over an abundance of proposed housing units on a stretch of 25A parcel. The civic won and, as a result, it was mandated that a portion of what is now the Ranches property be turned into a continuing care retirement community. The development has gone through various iterations and contractors over the years. Becker said Engel Burman is in the process of filing an application.

Both Becker and Arrington said there’s no opposition from the civic at all when it comes to these upcoming developments.

Mount Sinai resident and civic member Monica Stone said she is in favor of the retirement communities, as they will contribute to tax revenue, 80 percent of which goes back to the school district.

“Since it will be for profit, the taxes from it will certainly help the tax base in Mount Sinai,” she said, “since the school district is heavily reliant on residential property taxes for revenue.”

Incidents and arrests Sept. 13–18 Unlicensed and unabashed

A 41-year-old man from Shirley was driving a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle on North Bicycle Path in Port Jefferson Station at about 11:30 a.m. Sept. 18 with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Near the intersection of Boyle Road and Rush Street in Selden at about 9 p.m. Sept. 14, a 20-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station possessed more than 25 grams of marijuana while in the driver’s seat of a 2004 Chrysler according to police. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

At about 11 p.m. Sept. 14, a 23-year-old man from Sound Beach was driving near the intersection of Dillon Avenue and Superior Street in Port Jefferson Station with a driver’s license that was suspended in July for a failure to pay fines, according to police. Hit-run-and-arrest

A 58-year-old man from Port Jefferson was driving a 2013 Chevrolet on Route 25A in Setauket Aug. 25 at about 5 p.m. when he rear-ended a 2012 Lincoln and fled the scene without exchanging the required information, according to police. He was arrested Sept. 13 and charged with leaving the scene of an accident of property damage.

At about 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18, a 16-year-old male from Medford driving a 2017 Dodge on Route 25A in Miller Place intentionally struck a 2015 Ford, which was an unmarked police car, and fled the scene of the accident, according to police. Marked Suffolk County Police cars then followed him, and he ignored the lights and sirens instructing him to pull over, police said. When he eventually stopped on West Canal Road in Mount Sinai and police apprehended him, they discovered he possessed a clear baggy containing marijuana; a quantity of heroin exceeding 1/8 of an ounce; a white, plastic magnetic strip card encoded with a Visa debit or credit card account number belonging to someone else; and a plastic credit card embossing machine used to falsify credit cards, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal possession of a narcotic drug, second-degree possession of a forged instrument, unlawful possession of marijuana, third-degree fleeing of an officer in a vehicle, reckless driving and third-degree criminal mischief.

A bite out of crime

At the OK Petroleum gas station on Middle Country Road in Centereach Sept. 16, a 24-year-old man from Mastic stole two alcoholic beverages, according to police. When police tried to arrest him, he kicked and bit the officer, attempted to grab the officer’s Taser and refused to comply with verbal commands from the officer, police said. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny and second-degree obstruction of government administration.

Cashing out

A 31-year-old woman from Wyandanch deposited several forged checks into a Bethpage Federal Credit Union Bank account Sept.

18 and withdrew the money from the bank despite knowingly not having enough funds to cover the withdrawal, according to police.

She was arrested in Selden and charged with third-degree grand larceny.

Ice cold

At Ralph’s Italian Ices on Route 25A in Miller Place, a 22-year-old man entered Sept. 15 at about 10:30 p.m., displayed what appeared to be a handgun and attempted to remove cash from the register, according to police.

He was arrested Sept. 18 in Selden and charged with first-degree robbery.

Search and seized

While executing a search warrant at a home on Ruland Road in Selden Sept. 15, police discovered a quantity of cocaine belonging to a 32-year-old man who lived in the home, according to police. The search warrant was granted in connection with several heroin sales by the man between July 31 and Sept.

8, which took place within 1,000 feet of Newfield High School, police said. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and three counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

At 8 p.m. Sept. 17, someone stole a wallet containing cash and credit cards from an unlocked 2017 Toyota parked outside of a home on Quiet Court in Miller Place, according to police.

Car break-in

A wallet was stolen from a 1993 Toyota parked outside of a home on Maryanne Avenue in Port Jefferson Station at about 10 p.m.

Plates pinched

At about midnight Sept. 17, a license plate was stolen off of a 2009 Honda while it was parked on Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai, according to police.

“From their words, you can feel their passion for this cause,” he said, adding in his speech that although it is too late to save their son, Francine and Leonard have dedicated themselves to easing the grip of addiction upon our society. “Their selflessness and bravery in face of unthinkable tragedy is truly beyond compare.”

The congressman used the example of Lafond to discuss how the opioid issue is one of the absolute greatest threats we face as a nation, and it will not subside unless we continue to act.

“Here in my home county of Suffolk, heroin and opioid abuse is an especially deadly and destructive scourge,” he said. “There is no one solution to ending the drug [crisis]; this is a complex issue involving all levels of government, our community leaders, law enforcement, schools, churches and everyday Americans.”

Nicholas Lafond’s mother agreed.

“To make headway against this awful epidemic, the approach must be multi-focal, swift and forceful,” she said. “We not only need dollars to be put toward law enforcement and treatment, both of which we know have limited effect. We also need to concentrate on addressing the underlying psychological issues that lead to opioid use. These are not drugs one uses to ‘party,’ they are extremely strong and effective pain killers one uses to escape life. The world is a harsh place for kids today, so much different than when I or even you were young.”

Zeldin cosponsored and helped pass into law the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (S. 524), or CARA, which provides a total of $8.3 billion in funding over five years to help combat the heroin and opioid abuse crisis, and funds many initiatives on the local level.

“While this is a step in the right direction, it is not enough to truly end this plague upon our nation,” he said. “The complexity of this issue is unrivaled, and we cannot turn a blind eye to any potential effort. This needs to be a highest priority to resolve. We can not rest until tragic incidents like what happened to Nick Lafond become a thing of the past.”

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) was on the House floor Sept. 13 to honor Miller Place’s 25-year-old Nicholas Lafond, who lost his battle with addiction last month.

Zeldin delivered a speech to the U.S. House of Representatives pleading for the need to prevent further loss of life from the heroin and opioid abuse epidemic.

“A bright, intelligent and talented young man, Nick was loved by all who knew him,” Zeldin said in his speech. “He was an honor student who was accepted to Stony Brook University with the intention of pursuing a career in education. However, from a young age, Nick struggled with anxiety, which sadly led him down the path to heroin addiction.”

He fought addiction tirelessly, with support from family and friends, and sought several forms of treatment.

On Aug. 31, Zeldin attended a press conference in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, where he met Lafond’s parents, Francine and Leonard, and discussed their son who had been laid to rest only two days prior.

“The courage of these heartbroken parents to come to this event and talk about Nick so soon after his passing is absolutely incredible,” Zeldin said. “As a father, the thought of losing a child is unbearable. Through my discussion with Mr. and Mrs. Lafond, you could feel their commitment to fighting this terrible epidemic so that no other parent would have to go through this experience.”

Shortly after the discussion, the congressman received a letter from the Lafonds detailing their son’s story and outlining so many of the steps that could be taken to make drug addiction a thing of the past.

Marking milestones Members of Shoreham-Wading River school district commenced the 2017-18 school year during a Superintendent’s Conference Day. After a welcome from new superintendent Gerard Poole; board of education vice president Michael Lewis; middle school principal Kevin Vann, who also serves as the district’s administrators association president; and SWR teacher’s association president Mary Hygom spoke, honoring staff members who are reaching milestones this school year.

In his keynote address, Poole reflected upon the history of the school district, making note of its beginning in 1973, the first yearbook publication in 1977 and a New York Times article from 1991. He referenced the district’s history of success, by highlighting the average passing rate on all Regents exams at 95 percent, and the fact that both the high school and middle school were recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education in 1987 and 1983, respectively.

The remainder of the conference included the showing of an animated film and staff reporting for professional development programs and workshops in preparation for the first day of school.

In an effort to aid those struggling after the recent hurricanes, Rocky Point Middle School students and staff hosted a tug of war fundraiser.

The event, which also helped to culminate this year’s school spirit week, was held in the school’s

gymnasium and raised $1,000 in two days.

Students and staff worked together in teams. With encouragement from the attendees, the fun erupted into loud cheers as the eighth-grade team took the championship title.

Several residents who posted in the group also vouched for the reputation of DDI, a Smithtown-based nonprofit founded in 1961 that has launched more than 30 group homes throughout townships in Suffolk and Nassau counties.

“DDI is an amazing company and the developmentally disabled population consists of wonderful individuals who deserve to live in a community just like every other person,” wrote Ryan Nelson. “What some of those people are saying is disgraceful.”

A majority of the people who commented said their own lives have been touched by the special needs population.

Kim-Marie Duckett of Miller Place Road, who travels three hours a day to a group home in Pennsylvania to visit her 18-yearold autistic son, whose behavior she said was too extreme for local homes, said in an interview the Henearly Drive facility will be a welcome addition to the town. But Henearly Drive resident Dominick Caroleo, who is among those in opposition to the group home, said he volunteers at local churches helping cook for homeless people and those with disabilities and maintains that his stance has nothing to do with the special needs individuals.

“It’s not the people we’re against,” he said. “It’s what the home is going to do to the appearance of the neighborhood.

There’s always going to be traffic moving back and forth over there and people coming in and out of the house with different shifts and all that [and] they’re not paying property taxes. It’s just going to bring our property taxes up. Time’s going to tell.”

Miller Place resident Taniya Faulk, who has been diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease, said the neighbors are basing their concerns on hypothetical situations.

“Let’s not build around the possibility of a problem,” she said. “If there is one, then address it at the point where the problem occurs. I don’t understand what the big uproar is. It upsets me to think that I grew up in a town that is this close-minded.”

principal Rob Catlin, and together they projected six classrooms would be needed in the building to accommodate the roughly 175 students in the current fifth-grade class.

One would be hard-pressed to find three available classrooms, according to Catlin, who is currently in the process of meeting with parents about the issue.

“I’ve heard the same concerns from a couple different people now and I’m reaching out to some parents for some meetings to talk about it,” Catlin said. “As the year goes on, and if the topic continues, I’m more than happy to keep talking. But it’s in an early stage right now.”

Mount Sinai resident Beth Erdmann, whose children are in seventh and 10th grades, said every parent experiences panic in the midst of the elementary and middle school transition but soon realize it’s not a big deal.

“When it’s your first child, it seems too soon and scary, but they are in their own wing and it’s a nonissue,” Erdmann said.

dle school. I was worried and bothered at the time, [but] my kids were fine.”

Debra Wesolowski agreed, having gone through the transition multiple times with four children.

“Once they were there, I couldn’t imagine them in the elementary school,” Wesolowski said. “Kids are a lot more mature now than years ago … you see how mature and responsible the fourth-graders become as the year goes on [and] by the time they graduate from fourth grade they have outgrown the elementary school and need to advance to the next stage. The middle school does a great job transitioning them.”

But Jennifer Ruger Lazarou, an elementary school teacher, feels the kids are too young.

“I think keeping them in the elementary school one more year is a good idea, and will still make them just as prepared,” Lazarou said. “I teach in a K-through-six building and can’t even imagine the sixth-graders being exposed to middle school any earlier.”

Brosdal said district office and building administrators have begun the exploration of a move.

“It is too early in the process for the board to make a decision one way or another,” Brosdal said. “The expense of such a project would impact the district’s budget and bond proposal.”

Harborfields gets redemption win as Eagles fall at homecoming

By Bill landon Harborfields settled the score Saturday as the Tornadoes invaded Rocky Point and avenged last year’s homecoming loss by outscoring the Eagles 20-13 during a homecoming celebration of their own. Rocky Point senior Petey LaSalla bulled his way up the field for two touchdowns to help tie Harborfields with eight minutes left in the game, but a Tornadoes touchdown and stop sealed the Eagles’ fate Sept. 16.

“The juniors on last year’s team remember that loss,” Harborfields head coach Rocco Colucci said. “I mean, hats off to Rocky Point, they’re a great football team and with good teams it usually does go down to the

last minute, but what better way than to [come here] and return the favor at their homecoming game.”

Harborfields dominated the time of possession in the opening half, but the Eagles’ defense held the team to just one touchdown after senior quarterback P.J. Clementi found a hole into the end zone at the 10:58 mark of the second quarter. With a failed point-after attempt, the team took a 6-0 lead into the break.

“Our defense [played well] in the first half to hold them to just six points when they had possession like 90 percent of the time,” LaSalla said. “We lost a close one last week and this obviously sucks going 0-2, but we have power points [given to teams that face top-ranked opponents] and we have a big game next week at Comsewogue, which is their homecoming, and hopefully we can do to them what Harborfields did to us.”

The Eagles opened the second half by marching the ball down to a fourth-and-1, but Harborfields’ defense plugged the hole and took over on downs. The Tornadoes used the possession to strike with just two minutes left in the quarter. Clementi took another keeper across the goal line, and Harborfields senior Ethan Krauss split the uprights this time to put his team ahead 13-0.

“Our offensive and defensive lines were unreal today — they were making holes, they were clogging holes,” Clementi said.

“To have those big guys up front, it’s a blessing, but I knew [Rocky Point was] going to try to get [Petey LaSalla] the ball because he’s their playmaker.”

The Eagles’ offense opened the final quarter with a new look, putting LaSalla in shotgun formation. The running back plowed up the field until he crossed into the end zone

for Rocky Point’s first touchdown of the day.

Senior Jack Costa nailed the extra-point kick attempt to pull within six, 13-7. LaSalla scored again, but a missed kick blew Rocky Point’s chance at taking its first lead of the game.

With the score tied 13-13, Clementi hit senior wide receiver Chris Dluginsky bolting down the left sideline 56 yards to Rocky Point’s 22-yard line. Senior running back Jimmy Bifulco finished the job with the final touchdown of the game for the 20-13 win.

“I know they’re a great team, well-coached, but we came out here and we played our best,” Bifulco said. “We’re a family, we stick together the entire way and when it comes down to the last minute, we’ll finish it.”

Harborfields did just that, holding off Rocky Point on its final attempt deep in Harbrofields’ territory with 14 seconds left until the time expired.

“I was sitting on the sideline and I couldn’t watch,” Clementi said. “I walked back to the

track and turned around. I was just waiting for that [last] play to be over.”

Rocky Point head coach Anthony DiLorenzo said he wishes he’d have taken a timeout when a first down was signaled following Rocky Point’s first possession of the second half.

“Unfortunately, at the end of the game, that came back to bite us,” he said. “We came up short on the 2-yard line.”

Colucci said he couldn’t be more proud of his players, despite the team not being at full strength.

“This was the ultimate team win,” he said.

“Even at halftime people were looking at each other and saying, ‘We still got this.’ I have a couple of guys who weren’t feeling well and I told them ‘Don’t play for yourself, play for the guy next to you because next time they’re going to do it for you,’ and that’s going to win us some close games.”

Love thy neighbor North Shore residents have been given the opportunity to welcome people with unique challenges or auxiliary needs to their neighborhoods. Unfortunately, many have not greeted their potential neighbors with open arms.

Complaints in three neighborhoods have popped up despite past successes of nonprofits that strive to create a better life for those with disabilities. While many cite traffic and safety issues, arguments seem to lead back to the same thing — fear that property values will go down.

When Smithtown-based Developmental Disabilities Institute purchased a home on Henearly Drive in Miller Place to house six low-functioning autistic adults more than 21 years old, as well as three full-time staff members, many street neighbors objected. Among the issues cited were homeowners’ concerns that staff members entering and exiting the property would cause an increase in traffic and safety hazards in the area.

The opposition is in spite of the fact that the nonprofit DDI successfully runs more than 30 homes throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties, many of which are located in residential areas. The organization also works with the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities in Albany to gauge the number of group homes in an area to ensure that it is not oversaturated.

One resident said she was hesitant about strangers driving up and down her block multiple times and hanging out and smoking, and expressed that concern over her property value.

On Sept. 5 a similar scenario played out in Smithtown as Long Hill Road residents petitioned the town regarding a future adult home for six developmentally disabled women. The residence was purchased by Catholic Guardian Services, a religious nonprofit that provides a wide array of services and support for the needy in New York.

Like the Henearly Drive residents, Long Hill neighbors chose to argue the potential increase in traffic would create safety hazards. One homeowner Screenshot from Facebook claimed, “The nature and Comments in a closed group in response to the character of the surrounding area would be our Sept. 7 story on the Miller Place house. substantially altered due to these predicted problems.”

In Port Jefferson last month, a lengthy debate broke out on an unofficial villagers Facebook group after a member posted a photo with an angry blurb about the eyesore that is homeless people sleeping at the Port Jefferson Long Island Rail Road station when they cannot be admitted to Pax Christi Hospitality Center.

While we understand the concern over a decrease in property value in each of these three cases, these groups benefit neighborhoods and its residents. There is a track record of success and of upkeep, and we were happy to see others cry out in support of these homes. According to a thread on the Mount Sinai-Miller Place Community Facebook page, the support for the DDI home in Miller Place is overwhelming. It’s nice to see neighbors supporting neighbors, and to see those same people wanting to show that a small group of individuals and their opinions may not always speak for the thoughts and feelings of an entire hamlet or village.

We’d like to preach a reminder that a little bit of compassion toward fellow citizens can go a long way in creating a healthier environment for all.

Sanders’ Medicare bill a positive step I am delighted to see a nice amount of Democratic senators co-sponsoring Sen. Bernie Sanders’ bill calling for a Medicare plan for all Americans.

It is a policy that is long overdue in the United States, as most developed countries in the world provide some version of universal health care, and report better overall outcomes in care and spending than our country does. While I recognize that this is a politically heavy lift in a Republican-held Congress and White House, I believe that it is a statement of progressive values and morals. This bill stands in stark contrast to the numerous Republican plans that have been proposed, all of which take health care away

from millions of Americans.

The latest version of Trumpcare, the Graham-Cassidy-Heller bill, is yet another Republican proposal that the majority is trying to push through, without the procedures of committee hearings and a CBO score. They are attempting to do this before Sept. 30, so they can push this through the reconciliation process, which does not require 60 votes.

It is a fiscally and morally irresponsible move, as health care is about one-sixth of our nation’s GDP, and this bill would affect the health care of 32 million Americans. It would also redistribute money to states, who could then choose to waive health benefits,

or deny coverage because of preexisting conditions.

It is only when we as a society accept that health care is a basic human right, that every family deserves to see a doctor when they are sick, regardless of income, that we will at last join the rest of the civilized world in providing for our citizens. I am proud to stand with Sen. Sanders of Vermont and the co-sponsors of this bill, including New York’s Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, calling on a Medicare for all plan in the United States. I believe that these senators stand on the right side of history, and on the side of our citizens.

12, Primary Day. I am honored to be the Women’s Equality Party nominee for the position of Brookhaven Town Clerk. I am also humbled to realize I am the candidate selected by the Women’s Equality Party for the 2017 election, which happens to be the centennial anniversary of the women’s right to vote in New York State.

In recent times there has been a great call to civic action, especially for women and young adults — I, however, am not a newly fired up advocate. I’ve been a staunch advocate for women’s rights for more than 30 years, and currently sit as the president of the National Women’s Political Caucus, a nonprofit, bipartisan group that seeks to elect progressive women. It is

inspiring to see all the fresh faces getting involved and reinvigorating for those of us who have been leading the charge. The results of this primary are evidence of how important each individual vote is, with 18 total votes cast. I look forward to continuing to advocate for

women’s equality and I am hopeful that I will continue to be given the honor to efficiently and effectively serve the residents of the Town of Brookhaven as town clerk.

Gary Pollakusky intimidated by Leg. Anker I attended a rally for incumbent Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker last Saturday at her campaign headquarters in Rocky Point.

It was a real eye-opener.

What made the rally stand out was that her opponent, Gary Pollakusky, had to stage his own rally at the property right next door and at the exact same time. He could have held a rally anywhere in the district, but this is what he chose to do.

Why? Only one word comes to mind. Intimidation! He then marched his group right past Ms. Anker’s rally to the opposite corner where he proceeded to rant into a bullhorn. By taking this action, Pollakusky reveals to all exactly who and what he is.

He is just another angry, loudmouthed bully. Do we really need another person of this ilk in government? I think not. I’m with Sarah.

I

f we stepped outside tomorrow to a 52 degree day, we’d race back inside and put on a coat.

If we opened the door in January to the same temperature, we might race back into the house to shed that same coat.

It’s all about expectations.

Our daughter figured that out several years ago. Gone are the days when she tells us she thinks she did well on a test.

She doesn’t want us to ask, “What happened?” or

Instead, she often tamps down our expectations, indicating that we’d better brace for the equivalent of the academic cold. If she does better than expected, she won’t have to contend

with questions. If she met the lowered expectations, she can say that, even if she didn’t do well, she can take consolation in knowing how she performed.

Yes, relationships are all about managing those expectations.

Let’s take a quick look at President Trump. He’s a shoot-from-the-tweet president. He frequently misspells words, gets facts wrong here and there, and attacks his opponents, his allies and anyone in between according to his mood.

Has he done the same thing as our daughter? Is he resetting our expectations? Is he pleased to redefine the notion of a modern-day president?

If, and when, he seems levelheaded, deliberate and considerate, is he climbing over a bar he reset for himself, giving us a chance to applaud the manner in which he interacted with a public prepared for a stream of anger and disdain?

Relationships, as Harry from the movie “When Harry Met Sally” knew all too well, are also about setting expectations. When Harry (played

by Billy Crystal) is sharing one of his many philosophies of life with Sally (Meg Ryan), he suggests that he never takes a girlfriend to the airport early in a relationship because he doesn’t want her to ask why, later in the relationship, he doesn’t take her to the airport anymore.

Some people’s jobs, like stock market analysts, meteorologists and oddsmakers, involve setting expectations.

Built into their forecasts, meteorologists often leave the back door open, in case they’re wrong. As in, “It probably won’t rain, but there’s a 15 percent chance of precipitation today.”

While that forecast is innocuous enough, it leaves a small measure of flexibility in case the weather people missed a heavy band of rain clouds from their Doppler models, which happened recently, leaving my wife disappointed and dripping wet at her office after trudging through an unexpected shower.

Of course, a meteorologist who predicted rain every day in anywhere but Ketchikan, Alaska, where the locals

say it rains 400 days a year, wouldn’t last long, as people would bristle at carrying unnecessary umbrellas through the brilliant sunshine Many years ago, my wife and I went to see a movie. When we got to the theater, the film was sold out.

Instead of turning around, we bought tickets to a film on which we hadn’t read any reviews and knew nothing. We wound up watching “Shakespeare in Love.” We thoroughly enjoyed it, in part because we had no expectations.

Perhaps the most difficult expectations to meet, or exceed, are our own.

Raising the bar for anything — the taste of the food we cook, our performance during a presentation or our ability to stay calm in a crisis — involves risk. Then again, once we clear our new expectations often enough, we know what we can expect of ourselves and can move on to bigger challenges. The rewards, even if we never tell anyone how much more we accomplished than we expected, seem well worth the risk.

A toast to the beauty of upper New York state

his past week, we went “shufflin’ off to Buffalo.” Bet you don’t know where that expression came from. I certainly didn’t know that “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” is a song from Act II of the 1933 movie, “42nd Street,” and that it was a railroad saying even earlier. All I had to say was that I was going to Buffalo, and the response was immediate: “Shufflin’ off?” I was asked.

The second reaction was also the same. “Better bring your long underwear,” I was urged. “And a shovel. Is it

underwear. I did bring a pair of shorts, but I did not wear them because I didn’t see anyone wearing shorts in the city. When I am traveling, I’m a big believer in the “When in Rome” adage.

Actually the city looked quite pleasant to me, larger than I had imagined, clean and with a fair share of tall buildings. The population of more than 250,000 residents makes it the second largest city in the state. I understand that Buffalo, like a number of rust-belt cities, has undergone quite a face-lift.

Admittedly I did not see much of it since I was there for the fall meeting of the New York Press Association, and that meant I was locked into the hotel site where the workshops were held. But we did have a chance to look around a bit when we went out to the Anchor Bar, where Buffalo chicken wings were allegedly invented. It’s a pleasant and good-sized sports bar, and most people at the tables were, sure enough, having chicken wings with blue-cheese dip and cut-up celery sticks on the side, although one lady was eating a good-looking dish of shrimp scampi. She must have been a native.

In the way of cultural attractions, the city has an art museum, a science museum, a theater district, multiple art galleries, and the historic Martin House that was recommended for viewing.

Buffalo was once the scene of considerable wealth from the auto industry, where Pierce-Arrow automobiles were manufactured, also the railroads and the Erie Canal. As a result there are a number of urban mansions. It also has a river walk on Lake Erie that houses several eateries. Food, in fact, is big.

And people we met, in restaurants, the hotel and on the streets were friendly and unhurried — such a change of pace for a native New Yorker like me or even someone born and bred on Long Island. It always helps when the weather is beautiful, which it was for our entire stay.

The Buffalo Transportation PierceArrow Museum was enough to make lovers of antique automobiles cry for joy. The museum, which is large and planning to get larger, also has antique bikes and motorcycles, all in seemingly shiny new condition. And it even houses a filling station designed by

It was an eight-hour drive from Bridgeport, where the ferry docked, to Buffalo, and that does not count the stops. The roads are excellent, the roadside trees just beginning to suggest autumnal colors, and we spent one night on the way up in Canandaigua, about an hour and a half from Buffalo.

In the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes region, the area is deservedly famous for its Riesling wines, which I confess to having tasted. The village, its name derived from the Seneca tribe, was the scene of the Susan B. Anthony trial in which she was accused of voting illegally in 1873, since women were not then allowed to vote. She was found guilty and fined $100 with costs, which she did not pay.

Colleagues were surprised that we drove to Buffalo rather than just flying there, but I remembered from a previous trip many years ago, when I was a high school student, that the Mohawk Valley and upper New York state are truly lovely destinations. This trip confirmed that memory.
