North Shore students born after 9/11 learn to feel the pain

For those who were alive and old enough to grasp the enormity of the event, what happened that day is very complicated and difficult to comprehend, even 15 years later. For those who weren’t born yet or were too young to remember the events, it’s even more challenging to comprehend. That is the task facing North Shore global and American history teachers welcoming eighth- and ninth-graders into their classrooms for the 2016 school year.

Erica Alemaghides, a social studies teacher at Rocky Point Middle School, said she tried to approach the lesson from a different perspective this year compared to years past.

“I feel it’s important to teach them about everything, all the facts having to do with it, because they really don’t know anything,” she said. “We had a child who was actually questioning if there were people in the building when it went down. So a lot of them really don’t have any clue. They’ve heard of it, but a lot of them didn’t even really know what terrorism is, or they just don’t understand it.”

She said some students didn’t realize how many planes were hijacked that day, and weren’t aware of the attack on the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pennsylvania.

Alemaghides’ new lesson plan required students to choose an artifact that might have been found in the rubble, which they then replicated and explained in a personal reflection.

She said she wanted students to understand how the nation changed after the deadly attacks, and what was done to make America safe.

“You don’t want everyone thinking every time you go into a building you have to worry about that happening,” she said.

Wendy Blair-Braxton, an eighth-grade history teacher at Elwood Middle School, planned several days worth of lessons to help her students get an in-depth understanding of the events that transpired on 9/11.

She started her lesson Sept. 9 by showing her students photos of 9/11, without telling students what the photos depicted.

“They had different reactions, some students said terrorism, some didn’t even realize we were talking about 9/11,” she said.

“I tried to teach the emotional aspects of 9/11,” she said. “It really did hit home for a lot of the students. I also explained to the kids, once you live through this type of history, all the emotions come back every time you revisit it. You get the chills, and the goosebumps down your spine.”

She said many of her students became emotional after seeing the video and photos of the Twin Towers falling, and the classroom

became “dead silent.”

The eighth-grade teacher said many students didn’t realize just how many aspects of their lives were affected by the attacks.

“They didn’t realize added security now at airports was because of this,” she said.

The Elwood students’ lessons eventually went into further detail about the Patriot Act, terrorism and the Department of Homeland Security, as Blair-Braxton said she tried to show the students how 9/11 was a turning

Remembering 9/11 15 years later Out of tragedy came unity and togetherness in 2001

It was 15 years ago this week, Sept. 11, 2001, that Americans were putting their children on school buses and going about their daily routines when our nation was attacked. Terrorists boarded and later commandeered passenger planes that were fully loaded with fuel and flew them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the fields of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The terrorists that took over Flight 93 originally planned to strike the Capital building or the White House, but cries of “Let’s roll” rang out, and the passengers fought back against the perpetrators.

While Mike Piazza of the New York Mets was an exceptional baseball player, he also served as a leader for his team and the community, and even helped with a humanitarian drive that was based out of Shea Stadium to aid the recovery workers. He spoke about that day during his Baseball Hall of Fame induction speech in July.

“Sept. 11, 2001 is a day that forever changed our lives. To witness the darkest evil of the human heart and how it tore many loved ones from their families will forever be burned in my soul,” the transplanted New Yorker, who was born in Philadelphia, said. “But from tragedy and sorrow came bravery, love, compassion, character and, eventually, healing. Many of you give me praise for the two-run home run on the first game back on Sept. 21 to push us ahead of the rival Braves. But the true praise belongs to police, firefighters, first responders, who knew they were going to die, but went forward anyway.”

The New York Yankees, who were in pursuit of another World Series title, visited firehouses, and players had tears in their eyes moments before they played in games.

Today, Americans are watching a hotly contested election.

It was 15 years ago that many citizens put aside their political beliefs to be unified against a common enemy. Rescue crews traveled from all over the nation to head toward the remains of the World Trade Center, yellow ribbons were tied on trees across the United States and the undeniable will of our people was quickly demonstrated to the world. While it seems like yesterday that we watched these horrific events occur, there are current high school students that may have lost a parent that day. It is these boys and girls who were so young that they do not easily recollect their loved ones that were amongst the almost three thousand Americans killed tragically. This is not just another historic day to briefly remember — it is still with our citizens on a daily basis. Our children have lived under the heightened security at our airports, infrastructure centers like Pennsylvania Station and the George Washington Bridge, and during major sporting events. During every home game since 9/11, the New York Yankees invite veterans and rescue workers to be honored, as both teams line up to listen to “God Bless America.”

Our North Shore communities were a considerable distance from the destruction of the World Trade Center towers. But unflinchingly, local rescue and support workers from these towns traveled every day and spent hours away from their families to be at ground zero. May we never forget the sacrifices of members of these numerous agencies that are currently suffering from 9/11-related illnesses. It should also be remembered that while our North Shore towns are miles from the city, these communities and schools lost residents and graduates as a result of these acts of terrorism. Thank you to all our rescue workers and military branches that continue to protect the security and values of the United States, at home and abroad.

Sheriff will hold open house From Sept. 18 to Sept. 24, it’s Sheriff’s Week in New York.

The week celebrates the significant contributions made by the Office of the Sheriff in county government and in the statewide criminal justice system.

“This is a time when our residents have the opportunity to learn more about the dedicated and professional work of deputies, corrections officers and civilian employees in the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, tour our correctional facility and show support for law enforcement,” said Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco.

In recognition, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office will be holding its annual Open House and Family Day on Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds of the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverhead.

The event is geared toward people of all ages, and will feature facility tours for children ages 12 and over, exhibits, Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team demonstrations, McGruff the Crime Dog, balloon art, face painting, K-9 shows, Project Lifesaver demonstrations, Operation Safe Child ID Cards, Senior ID Cards, a drunk buggy obstacle course and an aquatic robot.

The Office of Sheriff is the highest-ranking law enforcement office in the county, and is steeped in historic significance, which encompasses more than three centuries of continuous service to Long Island. DeMarco encourages members of the public to attend the Open House to learn more about its unique role and the wide array of services it provides.

He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Bait and switch

On East Broadway in Port Jefferson at about 7 p.m. Sept. 8, a 52-year-old woman from Baiting Hollow who was driving a 2012 Hyundai collided with a 2005 BMW and fled the scene, according to police.

She was arrested Sept. 9 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

at about 11 p.m. Sept. 5, a 17-year-old male from Rocky Point was pulled over for speeding, according to police. During the stop, police said they discovered he was under the influence of drugs. He was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

At about 3:30 a.m. Sept. 6, while at the Suffolk County Police Department 6th Precinct in Selden, a 27-year-old man from Coram had marijuana and a firearm in his 2014 Ford, police said. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Bar fight

A man was punched in the face by another man at Portside Bar & Grill on Main Street in Port Jefferson at about 4 a.m. on Sept. 11, according to police. The victim was treated for injuries at St. Charles Hospital and elected not to press charges, police said.

A window on a 2006 Volkswagen was broken while it was parked outside of a home on Gary Street in Terryville at about 7 p.m. Sept. 9, according to police.

Holy theft

The front grill of a 2015 Subaru was stolen while the car was parked outside of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Port Jefferson Station at about 5 p.m. Sept. 10, police said.

Dent and run

At a home on 18th Street in East Setauket at about 3 p.m. Sept. 8, a parked 2015 Chevrolet was dented, according to police.

No prescription, no drugs

A 25-year-old man from Selden possessed the drug hydrocodone without a prescription while on Route 25A in Setauket at about 3 p.m. Sept. 6, police said. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

New year begins in Rocky Point Rocky Point school district opened its doors Sept. 7 and commenced the 201617 school year. Students arrived at their school buildings eager to begin the new year and embark upon new educational experiences.

This year’s secondary school students will have the chance to take part in an expanded science research program, which

now encompasses grades 8-11, as well as two new courses that foster Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills.

Continuing with the district’s mission to support and encourage all learners, this year also brings the introduction of two new Advanced Placement courses and new math labs designed to support students in Algebra II and specific Algebra I classes.

Gerard Lovett, 68, of Rocky Point, died Aug. 28.

Born Sept. 9, 1947 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Eugene F. and Gloria, and is survived by his brother Eugene F. Lovett III of Rocky Point.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church in Rocky Point. Burial followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Rocky Point Funeral Home.

Barbara Rado

Barbara Rado, of Calverton, died Aug. 30.

Rado was born in New Rochelle, to Charles and Ann, lovingly known to most as Pop and Nana.

Rado is survived by her siblings, Charles, Arthur, John, Marianne and Louise. She was the proud parent of Deborah, Philip, Patricia, Arlene and Paul; and was blessed with 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild to spoil.

Rado worked in Sears in the Smith Haven Mall for over 30 years. Shortly after retiring, she joined the Rocky Point school district as an aid and was there for over 10 years. She loved to travel, cook and spend time with her family.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church. Cremation followed at Washington Memorial Park. Arrangements were entrusted to Branch Funeral Home of Miller Place.

Marion Slater, 78, of Mount Sinai, died Aug. 30.

Born Jan. 23, 1938 in New York, she was

Mount Sinai, recently completed a project to receive their Silver Award. After identifying a need in the community, the girls needed to make a change or project, and share what they’ve done with other people to make an impact on the community. Bilello’s grandfather, Salvatore Joseph Bilello, was a Marine who fought in the Battle of Tarawa during World War II. He was a resident at the Stony Brook Veterans Home for a year and died Aug. 26, 2015 at age 92. During visits,she recalls sitting outside with the other veterans and their families. This is where the inspiration for the project came from. The Girl Scouts built a handicap-accessible checker/chess table for the veterans and their families to use.

Edwin Batchelor

Edwin Batchelor, 83, of Ridge, died Sept. 1.

He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy who served in the Korean War. Batchelor was the beloved husband of Solfrid; cherished father of Jacqueline Veronica, Karen and Eric; loving grandfather of Thomas, Sean, Nathan, Arianna, Dominic, Marisa and Trevor; dear brother of Robert; and is survived by many other family members and friends.

A religious service was celebrated at Branch Funeral Home in Miller Place.

Interment with military honors followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Maria Cani

Maria Cani, 92, of Rocky Point, died Sept. 11.

Born Aug. 21, 1924 in Canicatti, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Diego and Rosario Cipollina.

Cani was employed by the Long Island Garment Workers Union as a seamstress.

She is survived by her sons, Salvatore and Anthony; five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Closing prayers were offered at Rocky Point Funeral Home. Entombment followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Rocky Point Funeral Home.

Benson De Witt

Benson De Witt, 78, of Ridge, died Sept. 1.

Born Sept. 11, 1937 in Mount Kisco, he was the son of the late Benson and Gertrude.

He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. He was employed by Porsche, as a regional sales manager.

De Witt is survived by his wife Martha; daughter Debbie; sons Adam and Daniel; brother Floyd; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at North Shore United Methodist Church in Wading River. She was a retired registered nurse; member of Mount Sinai Seniors; enjoyed shopping, cooking, garage sales, decorating, entertaining, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Wendy; sons, Robert, Jim and Thomas; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother Tom; and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert.

Services were held at St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Selden. Interment followed in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.

Thomas Cutinella Memorial Field is dedicated, and so is Shoreham

By Bill landon As senior quarterback Kevin Cutinella walked onto his home field, his heart weighed heavy.

Although his Shoreham-Wading River football team picked up where the Wildcats left off last season, extending their winning streak to 25 games with a 56-0 win over Center Moriches, things looked a bit different this time.

Down the field, between the 35-yard lines on both sides of the field, read “Thomas Cutinella Memorial Field.”

On the evening of Sept. 9, in front of a standing-room-only crowd, the field was dedicated to the former Wildcat who died in October 2014 from a head injury sustained during a game at John Glenn.

“A lot was going through my mind,” Cutinella said. “It’s extremely sentimental that this field, in a football game, is officially dedicated to Tom. This is a team sport and we leaned on everyone to make a contribution, and that’s what Tom would do and that’s what Tom would want.”

Three plays later, freshman cornerback Xavier Arline intercepted a pass and took the ball to the end zone for the Wildcats’ second score. Unable to move the chains, the Red Devils punted the ball away, and again mishandled the kick. Shoreham-Wading River senior fullback Chris Sheehan scooped up the live ball and zigzagged across the field until he too reached the end zone. Kyle Boden, a junior running back, answered next on a handoff, bouncing outside and racing toward the finish line. The point-after attempt by junior kicker Tyler McAuley was good in three of the four attempts, to make it a 27-0 game just eight minutes into the contest.

“I had no expectations, but we practiced hard all week and we came out flying,” Cutinella said. “Because we came out playing 150 percent, the score was a result of that.”

Gray scored again, 90 seconds into the second, when he shot through a hole up the middle and strode into the end zone untouched. He said despite big losses from last season, his new team, including the players who didn’t know Tom, have been dedicated to keeping their winning ways and “Tommy Tough” motto alive.

momentum the whole game, and that really helped us,” he said. “Yeah, we lost 18 seniors to graduation — [Chris] Rosati, [Dean] Stalzer [Jimmy] Puckey [and Jon] Constant — but we have players that’ve been waiting their turn and they work hard in practice and that shows on the field.”

The Red Devils’ running game was extinguished by the Wildcats’ swarming defense.

As a result, Center Moriches endured multiple three-and-out situations, and Shoreham-Wading River head coach Matt Millheiser leaned on his bench the rest of the way.

“With tonight’s atmosphere, the kids just came out ready to play, and this team wasn’t

going to let anyone stand in their way on this field tonight,” he said. “The breaks went our way early with the blocked kick and the good field position, and Xavier with that interception ... it was a perfect storm for us.”

After a touchdown from senior running back Christian Aliperti, the Wildcats took a 47-0 lead into the halftime break.

Unable to mount any kind of a running game, the Red Devils were forced to throw deep, and Shoreham-Wading River junior cornerback Kyle Lutz intercepted a secondhalf pass. There was buzz along the sideline that another touchdown and extra-point kick would bring the Wildcats’ lead to 54, but a bad snap by Center Moriches left the quarterback chasing the loose ball into the end zone, where he was tackled for a safety that put Shoreham-Wading River out in front 49-0.

Sheehan fielded a free kick cleanly and plowed past the goal post for six more points, McAuley’s foot made it seven, for the 56-0 win.

Shoreham-Wading River hasn’t lost a game since November 2013, when the team fell to Babylon in the second round of the playoffs.

Last season, the Wildcats claimed their second consecutive Long Island championship title.

It’s a new season with a new field, but the expectations within the team remain the same.

“We’ve talked about ‘Tommy Tough’ for years now — what it means by how we play and how we carry ourselves,” Millheiser said.

“So I think it was important, especially tonight, to play with that intensity and play with that execution and play with heart — and they did that from the opening play.”

For Kelli Cutinella, Thomas and Kevin’s mother, she felt both exhilarated and heartbroken during the first game on the newlydedicated field.

“Emotionally, I felt excitement for them, but it makes me sad that the field is named after my son,” she said. ”I wish that he was here with us, but Kevin is an amazing person — he made us feel excited for tonight — he has that kind of influence on us. I’m humbled by how the community came out, supported us and supported the football team, and for the beautiful tribute to my son.”

show “Outside the Lines” about “the man in the red bandana.” The piece tells the story of Welles Crowther, a former lacrosse player at Boston College, who carried a red bandana with him everywhere he went. Crowther died in the attacks, and his family later learned of his heroism on that day, hearing stories about a man with a red bandana helping to save people trapped in the buildings.

“I feel strongly that positive can come out of negative,” he said.

Rosen shared student responses following the lesson.

“Everything we have learned about Welles shares a common theme: he was a hero,” ninth-grader Katelynn Righi wrote. “For someone to risk their life to help other people shows a lot about that person. It shows their courage, bravery and that they will do anything to make sure others are alright. He decided to be a hero because that’s who he was.”

Students were asked to write reflections on index cards, as Blair-Braxton played songs like “My City of Ruins” by Bruce Springsteen, a popular ballad that took on new meaning after 9/11 and helped raised funds for first responders.

After the lesson, students wrote down their thoughts on reflection cards.

“I feel like I shouldn’t be that affected by what happened on 9/11, since I had no personal connection to anything that happened,” one student wrote. “Then why do I feel like it does affect me? It’s probably because of a mixture of shock and sadness realizing that it affected our everyone inside of the country.”

Grasping the subject wasn’t any easier for a classmate.

“I think 9/11 had the largest negative impact in the history of the U.S. New York City is known as the city that never sleeps, but for long after the incident the city slept,” another student wrote. “The whole city was silent. I feel horrible for all the people who lost their lives, and the people who lived on, carrying the crestfallen emotions of the deceased. 9/11 will never be lost in history.”

Port Jefferson high school global history teacher Jesse Rosen, who teaches ninth graders, said his goal in teaching about 9/11 hasn’t changed much over the years. He prefers to approach the subject from a humanistic angle, with minimal discussion of the global implications.

“I feel like it’s still so close and people still know someone who was affected,” he said.

Polls give Clinton the edge in 2016, but the race is not over

By HeLmUT NoRpoTH Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and, in presidential election years, the traditional beginning of the general election campaign. At this juncture Nate Silver’s popular website, FiveThirtyEight, has all but anointed Democrat Hillary Clinton as the inevitable winner over Republican Donald Trump in November. The 538 forecast based on an aggregation of polls gives Clinton a 70 percent chance, give or take a point, to defeat Trump. It is a victory not only in the popular vote but also in the Electoral College. The polling averages produced by RealClearPolitics and The Huffington Post agree. They all have shown a Clinton lead for months, punctured only briefly when Trump clinched the GOP nomination in primaries or won it at the Republican National Convention. Polls are shining a bright light on Clinton’s prospects while casting a dark shadow on Trump’s. So it seems. How serious should we take these poll-driven forecasts?

By now we have lived with scientific polls in American presidential elections for 80 years. It started in 1936, when George Gallup conducted the first poll of a representative sample of American voters. For the record, he got it right

FDR led him in every poll conducted by Gallup and won in one of the biggest landslides — a great start. Gallup would not always be so

lucky. In 1948, his polling consistently showed Republican Tom Dewey defeating Democrat Harry Truman, the incumbent president, who wound up with the victory on Election Day. Back to Labor Day. At this point during the 2008 election cycle, Republican John McCain was ahead of Democrat Barack Obama 49

Letters to the editor

On the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks on Sept. 11, we reminisce about how on that day, and for so many days that followed, we felt united as a country. A persistent theme when discussing the events is that the aftermath of the attacks brought us closer together as a nation.

Our editorial staff would argue that 15 years removed means we still reside in the aftermath, and the legacy of 9/11 is still being written.

If we continue to splinter along party and racial lines, ties that bound us together in a time of horrible tragedy will simply be forgotten.

There was evidence that immediately following the events, we grew closer as a nation. Stories proliferated about long lines of blood donors, American flags flew everywhere — on front porches and cars — people took the time to help one another and civility ruled the day. And as we observed memorial events throughout the past weekend, communities still came together in harmony and with pride.

The initial feelings of solidarity as a reaction to the horrific events were real. However, we would hope that 15 years later, this feeling of unity would continue to apply to more issues.

After visiting classrooms and speaking with teachers, some of whom are now educating children who were born after that day in 2001 or are too young to remember it, the theme of unity struck a chord with them as well.

Our editorial staff wonders how America right now must look to those same students. They can turn on the news and witness divisiveness in an unfathomably ugly election season or see an NFL player being both heavily criticized and highly praised for kneeling during the national anthem. Do we still seem united?

While we feel a sense of togetherness on the anniversary of that day, as we recall the tremendous loss of innocents, or remember those who risked their lives to save others and think of those out there fighting to protect this country, there is still an overwhelming sense that we are growing further and further apart.

There can be no question — Lee Zeldin has stood on the side of our first responders from day one, and has fought to make sure those who responded to the call on Sept. 11, 2001 receive the proper care they deserve.

As a former NYPD sergeant who had been in New York on that day securing a lower Manhattan bridge and then spending hundreds of hours at Ground Zero and Fresh Kills Landfill, I know fully well the amount of pain and suffering the first responders had gone through as a result of the terror attacks. So many good people lost their lives that day.

On that day and the months following, thousands of responders and recovery workers did what they could in a toxic environment unheard of in history.

Due to the exposure of untold amounts of toxins, many oncehealthy responders and recovery workers have sadly departed, and many thousands more are suffering from diseases attributed to their exposure in response to the terrorist attacks, including myself.

The Zadroga Act, originally passed in 2010, worked to provide

As the candidate of the White House party, on whose watch this calamity occurred, McCain saw his fortunes tank in the polls. It also did not help that Palin, his vice-presidential candidate, came across as clueless and tonguetied on television in interviews with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric. So, real-life events unfavorable to the White House party and missteps in the election campaign combined to reverse a lead in the polls that one side, McCain in this case, enjoyed at the beginning of the general election campaign. Lesson: Beware of pollsters bearing election forecasts eight weeks before Election Day. Helmut Norpoth is a political science professor at Stony Brook University and has designed models to forecast elections in the U.S. and abroad. He will be contributing ongoing election analysis ahead of the 2016 election.

How united are we? Zeldin stands for first responders health care services for our 9/11 first responders, and had been recently reauthorized. And yet, some of our elected officials in the House and Senate have opposed its reauthorization, saying it’s too expensive or unnecessary. Being conservative has nothing to do with it; without a doubt, 9/11 first responders need and deserve this care.

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (RShirley) had been promoting Zadroga since first taking office.

I personally witnessed Lee Zeldin on the frontlines fighting for its reauthorization. He directly assisted and spoke on behalf of the many responders who went to Washington D.C. to fight for the reauthorization of the Zadroga Act. As Americans, we have a duty to serve those who have given up so much to serve us.

We must never forget the sacrifices of these brave men and women, but many have.

Cheeky distant relatives not keeping their distance E xtended family has that wonderful yet terrible ring to it. When we gather with family we may not have seen in years, we get the chance to reminisce, to share details about our lives, and to face the horror of seeing someone who insists on reminding us of something we said or did that we’ve spent years working to forget.

Recently, we gathered with a large group of family and got to watch our children, who are now in middle and high schools,

“He has your dimples,” another offered, which would be flattering except that I don’t have dimples. That lady insisted, however, that the laugh lines on the sides of my face were like dimples, to which my son and I blinked our long eyelashes, which he did get from me, and moved on.

“The last time I saw you,” one friend started, “you must have been no more than this high,” she suggested, holding her hand around mid-knee level. “Do you remember?”

No, how could he remember?

When you’re that small, you barely remember your own name.

Back when I was a kid, older relatives used to approach my cheeks as if they were fruit they had to squeeze to make themselves prune juice.

Between thumb and index finger, they’d grip tightly while spitting into my face something about how cute I’d become. I’d focus on not letting the tears spill down my sore cheeks as

these distant relatives couldn’t keep their distance.

Other people’s kids grow up incredibly quickly because we don’t have to take care of them when they get sick at night, drive them to sports or music practices, or push them to do their homework. We don’t have to battle with them when they decide that everything anyone who is more than 20 years old says is absolute nonsense and that they don’t want to live by anyone else’s rules.

We can look at other people’s children as if they are a part of some longitudinal study or as if we are flipping through the pages of a picture book that spans several years.

When I see some of these children who drift in and out of my life every few years, I’m tempted to tell them stories that wouldn’t interest them, about how incredibly shy they were 10 years earlier, or how their laugh used to be like a bubble machine, filling the room with happy suds.

For the giggling girl who became the taciturn teenager, those stories are as welcome as persistent questions about the boys in her grade or events that occurred during the day in school.

I can’t stop myself from commenting on how much taller the kids are getting, in large part because many of these teenagers, who I used to get on one knee to see eye to eye, are now towering over me. I even made one of them smile when I asked if he wouldn’t mind bending down to hug me.

At this recent gathering, I asked my son to go around the table and name as many of the relatives as he could.

The relatives were aghast at my putting him on the spot but, thoroughly enjoying the day, he recognized the request was a playful prank.

No matter what I say to other people’s kids, I make sure I don’t pinch anyone’s cheeks. Even all these years later, I can still see those feral fingers and thumbs coming at me like talons.

What might have happened, who might we have become, are all fascinating questions for which we will never know the answers. By Leah S. Dunaief lives had a do-over, that they had few regrets. But suppose the circumstances had changed, that when we were presented with a choice, we had taken the other road. It can be fun to speculate.

Between you and me

So, to paraphrase Yogi Berra’s famous quote, what are some of those other forks in the road?

The first such choice that comes to mind for me is the decision my husband and I made to return to the East Coast. He was ending his stint in the Air Force in Texas, and he had gotten a job offer from the medical center at The University of Oklahoma. We went to look, my husband and I and our then two children. The people were gracious, welcoming and encouraging. The medical school had a position open in the ophthalmology department, and he was thought to be the right fit after his considerable experience taking care of airmen and their families. The school made him what sounded to us, after the military, like a terrific offer. He toured the hospital, we were shown nice areas of Oklahoma City in which we might live, we were taken to dinner at a country club and we met several other young families who were happily settled there.

At the end of a lovely weekend, we turned to each other and said “no.”

settle in San Diego, California. We had been out to the West Coast during my husband’s vacation weeks, and we loved the area — La Jolla in particular. The city was set in the hills, curved around the harbor, offered a fine academic and cultural existence and had the best climate in the United States. My husband hated the cold weather and thought he had found Shangri-la. I wasn’t so sure about the occasional earthquake tremors that rattled the dishes in the cabinet where we stayed, but I lusted for the ocean after two years in northern Texas. A decision was made: We would move there as soon as he was discharged.

He even found a possible associate in a growing practice and we checked out a couple of places to live.

You might ask, how did we wind up on the North Shore of Long Island?

The answer: family. Our children were my parents’ only grandchildren, my parents were our children’s only grandparents, and in those days — the late 1960s — flying between coasts was a big deal involving many hours and changes of planes. And,

anyway, my father hated to fly. Additionally my parents were tied to their business in New York City with no plans to retire. On the other side, my husband’s three siblings and their families, along with aunts and cousins, were all in the New York area.

We reluctantly yielded to the pull of family and, in a manner of speaking, we left our hearts in San Diego and came east. We then had to decide where in the vicinity of New York we would stay. The choice was between two medical centers that were on the drawing board: Valhalla, in Westchester, and Stony Brook. So how did we wind up here? That is a story for another column.

Would we be different had we settled in La Jolla? Would our children be different? Ironically one of my sons felt the siren song of that beautiful coastal city of San Diego and almost moved there. But the proximity to family, among other considerations, prevailed. Had we taken the other road, we would be the same people with the same values, I trust, but the details of our lives? We will never know.
