TOB thanks residents, local businesses for food drive contributions Due to the hardship the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to many families, the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Program held an emergency food drive to help those who have been affected.

The drive took place from March 22 through April 23, with seven drop off locations in various areas throughout Brookhaven.

Overall, enough food was collected to donate to six food pantries located throughout Brookhaven Town, a homeless shelter, and individual veterans and four families who contacted the Youth Bureau.

“I want to thank all the residents and local businesses that contributed to this food drive,” said Supervisor Ed Romaine. “These are difficult

times and the response we received continues to show how Brookhaven residents rise to the occasion of helping our neighbors in need.”

Councilman Michael Loguercio, Town Board Liaison to the Youth Bureau said, “Thank you to everyone who contributed to this drive.

Working with the Youth Bureau, there are various programs that run throughout the year to help those in need and it is always very gratifying to see how many residents are helped through this program.”

INTERFACE is a partnership between individuals, generous corporate neighbors and the Town of Brookhaven united in a shared effort to give year-round assistance to Brookhaven’s less fortunate residents.

County parks stewardship program officially launched Suffolk County deputy presiding officer, Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), officially launched Tuesday the Park Stewardship Program, where community volunteers are selected to oversee local parks that do not have staff.

County nature trails are in need of assistance as illegal dumping and vandalism are often discovered on the paths where local residents take their daily walks.

“The responsibilities of the stewards would be to pick up trash and to notify the parks department

if there is vandalism or dumping,” Hahn said.

“We’ve had very high profile dumping issues, so it’s good to have eyes and ears on the ground.”

The stewards are also encouraged to help with signage to assist local residents with navigating through the trails.

Hahn said it is important to create more signage to help residents such as mothers with children to ensure they know how far the trail is to reach a particular scenic spot.

County Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) expressed his gratitude for Hahn’s program, as his involvement in preserving Long Island parks dates back to 2006 when he won support for the transfer of the 365-acre former Kings Park State Hospital property to New York State parks department.

“This is very near and dear to my heart, I walk through here regularly,” he said. “This is the kind of thing that starts off small but may develop into a group where we can raise money so we can make improvements to the park.”

The falling of trees throughout Long Island trails since Hurricane Sandy in 2012 has been continuing many years later. The president of Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, David Reisfield, has taken it upon the Greenbelt organization to remove hazardous trees on trails that caused concern for residents.

“This, to me, is the best thing,” he said. “We go out every Tuesday and cover three to four miles of trail, but the more volunteers the better. I could not be happier.”

According to Hahn, stewards are not expected to cut down trees but are welcomed to use clippers for branches that may cause blockages on the trails.

“It’s important that people get to go out and

experience this, and sometimes a candy wrapper or a water bottle can mar that experience,” she said. “So, having stewards that are there to help pick those up is a good thing.”

Rocky Point School District’s Lisa leaves lasting likability

Michael Lisa is looking forward to serving on the Rocky Point Board of Education after running unopposed.

Along with incumbent Edward Casswell, Lisa plans to claim two open seats on the trustee’s board on May 18 after what will be a landslide victory for both candidates.

Caswell did not respond to a request for a conversation from TBR. Working in the Massapequa school district for over 23 years, Lisa is a high school social studies teacher, but yearns to partake in a larger conversation about the future of education.

His unique experiences garnered over two decades of being an educator is what Lisa believes will make him a benefit to the district upon election.

“I have aspired to become a member of the board,” Lisa said. “I’m ready to represent the Rocky Point community members in any way which I can.”

While managing projects on the technology committee for the Rocky Point School District, Lisa said that he had seen

firsthand what has worked and what has not when it comes to tech in education.

Remote learning is a hurdle that Lisa said must be overcome by providing a safer,

cleaner in-person learning environment for students and staff to return to in the fall.

Within his classes, Lisa noticed a decline in classroom productivity resulting from

remote learning, a compromise that has proven safe yet challenging for many in the school district.

“If we do get back to a sense of normalcy, of course, there will be some difficulty transitioning back,” Lisa said. “This social isolation has brought a great deal of anxiety among students. Not being in person, no real interaction with your classmates, it’s a struggle to reach many of these learners remaining at home.”

Further collaboration with teachers, members of the board, teachers, and students — Lisa is advocating for continuously collecting input from the Rocky Point community to reflect on what is working in their system and what must change.

Lisa has analyzed the school district from various perspectives as a teacher, a community member and a father.

Now he is taking the initiative to give back to his community by providing an optimal in-person educational experience for the youth of Rocky Point.

“I’m looking forward to engaging with our students and others to bring back this sense of normalcy that we all need for our wellbeing,” he said.

Meet the candidates: Miller Place School District BOE

BY JULIANNE MOSHER JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Residents are able to vote between two local residents for the upcoming board of education and budget vote on May 18.

One seat is up for election this year, and up to the plate are candidates Desiree O’Neil and Bryan Makarius.

When elected, the position will count as a three-year term, beginning July 1 of this year through June 30, 2024.

Both are first-time runners.

Bryan Makarius

Bryan Makarius brings his experience in education to the table when it comes to running for the Miller Place Board of Ed, but being a father of two in the district, he said he also wanted to give back.

“I wanted to make a difference and I know I have that skill set in order to help make those decisions,” he said. “I really understand what’s going on in the community.”

Makarius has volunteered with the Port Jefferson Fire Department since he

was a teenager — serving more than 24 years. He said the experience he gained there, and while holding elected positions in the department, provided him with “invaluable growth as a community leader.”

He and his wife, Leah, decided to pack up and move to Miller Place in 2012 to raise his family.

By day working in the Longwood School District, Makarius said he chose to run not out of anger towards the district — he wants to give back.

“I think the district has done a good job.

I think the people there have done a good job,” he said. “But I just want to be able to get back to my community more.”

He said he wants to keep continuing the quality education that Miller Place is known

for. One task he wants to tackle is making class sizes smaller.

But he said he’ll be there to listen to any and all concerns.

“If there is something that the community really wants, in which they have said over and over again, we have to find out a way to make that work within the budget,” he said.

Desiree O’Neil

Born and raised in Miller Place, and a graduate of Miller Place High School class of ’96, Desiree O’Neil decided to run for board of ed because she believes the district needs more transparency.

“The biggest concern right now in the Miller play school district is the lack of communication from administration and the board of education,” she said. “This past year was obviously very difficult for many school districts, and our district was not very willing to work with the community to offer choices for their children.”

O’Neil said the district did a poor job navigating the pandemic — elementary schools were back in school all year, while secondary students weren’t back full-time

until March 1.

“We weren’t given an option for families for a virtual platform until quite a few months into the school year,” she said.

If elected, O’Neil said she wants to address the different limitations the district has, including a better curriculum for gifted and talented students in the elementary level.

O’Neil graduated from Stony Brook University with a Bachelor’s in English and works as a senior benefits consultant profession with more than 20 years of industry experience.

The mom of two is active in the Miller Place School District athletic programs, helping put together the Section XII rally with other local school districts last year.

Meet the candidates: Mount Sinai BOE

Karen Pitka and Paul Staudt are running Tuesday, May 18, for two available seats for a three-year term on the Mount Sinai School District Board of Education.

Karen Pitka

Pitka has lived in Mount Sinai since 2011.

Celebrating her 20th year as a fourth-grade teacher this fall, she is an educator in the school district. She has experience in teaching second and fifth grade, and spends her free time being director of the school’s drama club.

Having the experience in teaching elementary school, Pitka also was the leader of her schoolwide Positive

Behavioral Interventions and Supports team and has created presentations to faculty, staff and other Long Island educators about motivating and engaging elementary classroom practices.

When Pitka isn’t working, she spends time with her three children who are 7, 6 and 2 years old.

Having been recently nominated by the district administration and selected to serve on a standards committee for New York State educators, she is prepared to run for the school board.

“Being an elementary school teacher, I feel that I am well versed in what our children need,” she said, “All of our children have suffered greatly from the closure of the school in 2020 along with the hybrid learning plan into 2021.

During these unprecedented times, I feel I will be able to offer the proper guidance as to what our students truly need due to being involved in it every day in my own classroom.”

Having young children in the community, Pitka has a vested interest in the well-being of all Mount Sinai students. She also feels having longevity in the district is important.

Paul Staudt

Staudt, a heavy equipment technician for Komatsu America Corp, was born and raised in Mount Sinai. He has two children who

are currently attending Mount Sinai schools.

Both Staudt and his wife Krista have grown up in the same town and have been married for 19 years.

After battling a very tough year with the pandemic, Staudt felt it was imperative to run for the school board. Despite the current BOE doing their best to work through the COVID-19 crisis, he believes he can offer a different perspective if elected.

“Obviously over the last year, some issues and concerns have arisen from both the parents and teaching perspective,” he said. “There’s been a lot of issues with clarity. Their communication to the community, in my opinion, is outdated.”

With a broad background of different jobs Staudt has accomplished throughout his life, he

feels he is well rounded and will be able to aid the board in achieving transparency.

“I am a nine-year military veteran, I have 23 years as a volunteer fireman, I am also a tradesman,” he said, “All of these things, coupled with my life in Mount Sinai, bring a different perspective to the board.”

Staudt said he feels the board needs more diversity: “I think that is what a school board needs, people of varying backgrounds with different perspectives. We, as a board, need to put our personal experiences together and use that to make decisions in the best interest of all of our children.”

As the school district makes the transition from online meetings to in-person, Staudt hopes the same amount of people who have been attending the online meetings will translate into coming down for the actual board meetings.

“I’ve been around a long time, I grew up in this town, so to be able to step into this role and be able to look at things through a different lens is something you need to have on a board,” he said.

Voting

The school budget and board of education votes take place Tuesday, May 18, at the Mount Sinai Elementary School back gym at 118 North Country Road, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Meet the candidates: SWR School District Board of Education

BY HARRY TO DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The Shoreham-Wading River board of education will be conducting its budget vote and board elections on May 18. The two candidates are running unopposed.

Robert Rose

Trustee Robert Rose is running unopposed, making this his fourth reelection since 2012.

In an email interview with TBR, Rose highlighted his success in getting students back in the classroom.

“I think the biggest accomplishment has been getting our students back in school every day,” he said. “I think our teachers and staff have done a great job during this global pandemic. I also think that our facilities have drastically improved over the last several years.”

Rose has more-than 20 years of experience in education. For the past 15 years, he has served as the assistant principal at Smithtown High School East.

James Smith

Board member James Smith is also running unopposed. He was first elected in 2018 after his second run for office.

In the 2018 election Smith ran on a campaign of greater psychological and emotional resources for students, calling for more psychologists and social workers in schools.

Smith has been an active Shoreham resident for about nine years. In that time, he became vice president of the PTA. He also coached kids through Sound Beach Soccer Club and Father Joe’s Soccer.

Smith did not respond to TBR’s request for comment.

Voting

Board elections will take place with the budget vote for a 1% tax levy increase and two capital project propositions Tuesday, May 18, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Shoreham-Wading River High School gym, located at 250A Route 25A in Shoreham.

North Shore groups team up to clean up

BY JULIANNE MOSHER JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The Sound Beach Civic and North Shore Youth Council joined together to clean up a spot that will soon be home to a frontline hero dedication.

Bea Ruberto, president of the civic, said that the group was joined by local scouts and the NSYC to clean up parts along New York Avenue.

With all groups combined, more than two dozen community members helped prepare for the tribute that is set to be installed at their Adopt-aSpot this summer.

From 9 a.m. until 12 on Saturday, May 8, Ruberto said it was a successful event.

“Everything was done by noon because pretty much everybody was there by nine, and everybody just jumped in and started working,” she said. “They were really great.”

Stephanie Ruales, director of communications and public relations, and executive director Robert Woods said a handful of kids from NSYC joined in the cleanup, and stayed to make sure the spot was perfect.

“We love working on community projects with our local organizations and are always looking for ways to get our young kids involved in community service,” they both wrote in an email. “It’s also a great way to raise awareness about initiatives that our civics are working on and the great things happening in our towns.”

While there, the volunteers from the youth council helped edge out one of the garden beds and weed and prepped the area for some new plantings and transplants.

ago. The idea is to have a large stone, adorned with a plaque honoring frontline workers who worked tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. A tree will be planted behind it.

To raise funds for the project, the civic created a cookbook, “Signature Dishes of Sound Beach and Beyond,” earlier this year.

Donations were made in exchange for the book, and the civic “sold out” of the first 100 copies almost immediately.

“It was because people want to support this,” Ruberto said. “People really care about saying thank you to all the people who work to keep us safe.”

Ruales and Woods said not only was the cleanup helpful to the future tribute, but it also instills a sense of community in young people.

“It helps them feel connected to where they live, especially as we continue to navigate the pandemic,” they wrote. “There’s that feeling of accomplishment that they contributed to something greater than themselves.”

Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) stopped by to help, too.

“It is thanks to our committed community volunteers that our community’s green spaces stay beautiful and clean,” she said. “The Adopt-a-Spot will be the perfect place to honor and thank our frontline and essential workers who continue to keep us safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Mather Hospital completes new cardiac catheterization labs

Mather Hospital announced this week its new cardiac catheterization lab is completed and is ready to serve patients — as soon as it receives its final Department of Health inspection and approval in the upcoming weeks.

According to Nursing Director for Cardiac Cath Services Nicole Hoefler, Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson is joining the few places on Long Island in hosting a cardiac catheterization lab to provide less invasive heart-related services to patients who need it.

“We’re here to basically help prevent serious heart attacks,” Hoefler said. “And prevent heart attacks that might be evolving.”

The labs specialize in using X-ray guided catheters to help open blockages in coronary arteries or repair the heart in minimally invasive procedures. These range from stenting to angioplasty and bypass surgery — that are less traumatic to the body and speed recovery.

“Sometimes, if a patient had a positive stress test, they’ll come in here so we can see what’s causing that pain they might have been having,” she noted. “Sometimes they need to have it for surgery clearance, like if they saw something on their EKG.” The two new state-of-the-art rooms were approved by Northwell Health last

year, alongside three other Northwell facilities.

Construction began on the new spaces in August 2020, completing and turning over to the clinical staff on April 19.

By adding the two labs into Mather, Hoefler said they can help save a life.

“Every minute that passes when you’re having a heart attack slows your heart muscle,” she said. “So not having to transfer the patient out, and just bring them in from upstairs will be life changing.”

Both rooms will be able to accommodate approximately 20 patients per day with the 12 hours the labs are open.

The addition of the more than 3,000 square foot space is just another space that Mather can now provide patients better.

“I think the community just loves Mather,” Hoefler said. “Having this service is just another reason to come here.”

SBUH honors nursing staff during National Nurses Week

BY JULIANNE MOSHER JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM To kick off National Nurses week, Stony Brook University Hospital rolled out the red carpet for its nursing staff, cheering them on as they made their way into work.

On Thursday, May 6, the 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. shifts were welcomed into the hospital with a red carpet and balloons to thank them for their efforts — especially throughout the last year.

Since the early 90s, May 6 through May 12 (ending on Florence Nightingale’s birthday), nurses across the country have been thanked for the work they do.

But 2020 showed a new appreciation for nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

SBUH decided last summer to put out the red carpet, as nurses ventured into work during the height of the coronavirus crisis.

And for the second year in a row, more than 3,400 RNs, LPNs, nursing assistants, nursing station clerks and more were thanked as they readied a 12-hour shift like a celebrity.

Nursing staff was welcomed with a red carpet this week to say thank you for all their hard work.

Carolyn Santora, chief nursing officer & chief of regulatory affairs, said the red carpet was just one way of saying thanks.

“Our nurses are stars, and they’re wonderful,” she said. “We wanted to show our appreciation.”

Santora said that throughout the whole week, nurses and nursing staff were recognized for their hard work. One day they were delivered ice cream, another they were given awards.

“The staff, I can’t say they’re not weary and tired — it’s been a long, long year — but they’ve been incredible,” she said. “They come to work dedicated every single day, take care of our community and support each other in the process.”

Santora said the staff were appreciative of the hospital’s efforts.

“The importance of this is understanding and recognizing them for their skills, for their dedication, for their talents and for their heart,” Santora said. “Taking care of all of these patients every single day, it’s just remarkable what they do.”

Baseball bringing two communities together

BY RICH ACRITELLI DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM This past week, baseball played a huge role in brining the two communities of Mount Sinai and Rocky Point together for a dynamic cause.

“Home Runs for Easton” was organized between these two baseball teams that played in front of almost 1,000 people at the Town of Brookhaven Diamond in the Pines Park.

The players had a home run derby and a scrimmage in front of fans that also enjoyed a massive raffle, food, refreshments, hat and shirt sales, and plenty of smiles towards a worthy endeavor.

Long-time Mount Sinai baseball coach Eric Reichenback was proud of the unyielding efforts that were presented to make this fundraiser into a successful function. He wanted to thank his school’s football coach Vinny Amarato, the girl’s basketball coach Mike Popperlotto, Joanne Rentz, and especially his wife for spending so much time to help the family of his middle school baseball coach Dave Clark.

Easton was treated for this serious spinal cord condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center and at Shriners Hospital for Children.

Reichenback is no stranger to playing and coaching big games at almost every baseball level, but perhaps this one of the finest moments of his career. He was extremely pleased to help bring some comfort to one of his coaches in one what Reichenback called a “colossal effort” to bring this game together.

Easton’s dad is a physical education teacher and coach at Mount Sinai High School, and he was a talented baseball player that was a catcher at Sachem High School. He

later played at New York Tech.

With family members, friends, baseball players, teachers and parents from both districts, they watched a homerun derby that gained applause from the fans, where they saw Rocky Point Coach Eric Strovink, need only one pitch to hit the ball over the fence at the Diamond at the Pines baseball field.

Owner of the All-Pro Sports Academy and instructor Scott June tossed batting practice for over 40 players from both teams that tried to take him deep on every swing. He is a good friend and former Sachem teammate of Easton, who delivered many pitches to the young men that dug in at home plate.

This event that was run by these two teams raised over $25,000, to help this family endure

the long and costly road to recovery.

Rocky Point Assistant Baseball Coach Eric Strovink was elated at the positive response that was demonstrated by fans that traveled from near and far to watch these local boys play for Easton.

This local baseball hitting figure that once tormented high school and college pitchers, is a “gentle giant” that has helped steer the Rocky Point baseball team towards helping others through numerous visits to a local soup kitchen and homeless shelter.

One of the numerous people that Strovink identified in helping this event was Eric Fritch. He is a volunteer at Shriners Hospital, where he has donated money and support in helping families cope with severe medical hardships. This was no different, as Fritch was a dominant volunteer to help Easton on this day.

There was no shortage of help, as many members stepped up to the plate to help run this fundraiser.

Anthony and Eleni Sorice represented one of the many families that gave their time to help make this event possible and they believed that it was a “total team effort between these two towns to bring this event alive.”

There were gift cards of every kind that were donated by local restaurants, bars, and Tuscany Market from Miller Place. And those that donated money through the massive raffle were able to win sports memorabilia items that were signed by former New York Yankee Greg Nettles, New York Met Todd Zeile, current Yankee Clint Frazier and items from Nascar.

Rocky Point Senior Nash Thixton, a pitcher,

hit one home run in the derby, where he also won a signed jersey of New York Yankee Pitcher Luis Severino. Thixton was pleased to participate in this game and he believed that it was “good for both communities to supremely come together to aid a family in need.”

Over the last several years, these two teams have gained notable experience in working together towards charitable causes to support these North Shore communities.

They have scrimmaged against each other during the “Live Like Susie” event.

This baseball tradition remembers the tragic loss of Susie Facini, a graduate of Rocky Point High School, who passed away from a sudden heart attack in 2011.

The Eagles and Mustang baseball teams established their own “spring classic” to recall the efforts of this kind young lady who positively touched everyone within her school district.

Whereas both teams always want to do well against each other within the lines of this game, they have exhibited a unique sense of class to bring awareness to local causes that have brought our residents together through the spirit of baseball.

One of the most important aspects, is the experience of goodwill that these young men have learned from their coaches that have partook within this local tradition.

Most importantly, these players someday pass this baseball compassion onto teams that they will coach and to their own children in helping others through athletics.

This tradition of giving back was established by former Rocky Point High School coach Andrew Aschettino to his successor Anthony Anzalone, and the mighty presence of Strovink, and Reickenbac. They have utilized our National Pastime to foster the importance of giving back through major fundraisers like that of “Home Runs for Easton.”

Anzalone was pleased to be a part of this event and he stated, “It was an honor to be a part of such an amazing day.

We have a long standing relationship with the coaching staff at Mount Sinai and when asked to join forces, it was a no brainer.”

Although it is never easy to see a child go through a difficult health condition, the warmth of baseball helped brighten a poor situation for this family.

Again and again, baseball has proven through every type of crisis, to be a pleasant distraction from negative times, to bring our people together, as was demonstrated at the Diamond in the Pines on Thursday, May, 6.

Panthers pounce!

BY BILL LANDON DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Kings Park stayed with the Miller Place trading goal for goal to make it a one goal game at the half, but it was Robbie Cunningham’s stick that ruled the day for the Panthers where the sophomore midfielder scored five goals to lead his team to an 11-7 victory in a League II contest at home May 7.

Bartolotto notched a hat-trick and Nicholas Belvedere scored twice and teammate James Sternberg stretched the net.

Kings Park senior Paul Freyre had a pair of goals for the Kingsmen as did Dom Mastromonica and Nico Laviano as Chris Panetta found the back of the net.

The win lifts the Panthers to 2-0 in the division where Kings Park searches for their first win of this Covid compressed spring season.

Student places first in state competition

Rocky Point High School junior Kaitlyn Tereso earned first place in a SkillsUSA virtual New York State competition.

Kaitlyn, who attends the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, where she is a student in the animal science program, was honored at a virtual award ceremony for her first-place win in the Medical Math contest, where she was challenged to demonstrate her knowledge of general math concepts used in the healthcare fields. She completed a written test that included the use of ratio/proportion, dosage calculation, metric equivalents, Roman numerals, abbreviations, and general math including percentages, among other medical math-related problems.

She was also congratulated by Rocky Point High School Principal Jonathan Hart for this exceptional honor.

Pocket Theater student performance Rocky Point High School’s Pocket Theater Production premiered on April 23 and featured seven Drama Club students — Jillian Carley, Jordan Chirivas, Brenna Kiernan, Samantha Leversen, Adam Olszewksi, Renee Ortiz and Jennifer Sandusky — in “Selfie,” a dramedy by playwright Bradley Hayward.

The short play is based on the characters as they prepare for the future with the obstacles that senior high school students can often relate to, including bullies, parents, peer pressure and their own self-judgment while they search for ways to stand out from the crowd.

As the characters document their year, they come to the realization that life is not about what other people see, but about the pictures they have of themselves.

Under the direction of Mary Donovan-Cerasuola and production assistants Emma Maher, Brianna Metz and Jennifer Sandusky, the show took place in the high school auditorium with each student permitted to have two guests in attendance to adhere to social distancing guidelines. The show was also posted to the district’s YouTube channel for at-home audiences.

Prodell Middle School Air Force Veteran meets virtually with students Awesome. Amazing. Inspiring. These words were directed to Michael Wern after he visited students virtually in Albert G. Prodell Middle School’s MOIP/research class.

The MOIP (Methods of Inquiry and Presentation) students, taught by Danielle Senneca, were in the middle of a project about Operation Desert Storm when their research came to life upon meeting Senior Master Sgt. Michael Wern, veteran of the Persian Gulf War, who spoke to the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District students about his career in the Air Force.

With more than 3,500 flight hours, Master Sgt. Wern shared the highs and lows of his military service and actual flight missions.

Students learned that he often flew in a

Hercules HC-130 as low as 150 feet above water and 300 feet above mountains to and from rescue missions.

“Even through a Google Meet, there was so much emotion in the presentation,” Senneca said. “I am humbled and grateful that [Master Sgt.] Wern shared his experience in the Air Force with my students.”

Master Sgt. Wern, who currently protects the students and staff at Miller Avenue School as a security guard, amazed the students further when they found out that he was part of the unit that helped Navy Seals and that he helped patrol no-fly-zones in Iraq.

They also admired that he continues to help veterans even after his service in the military ended.

North Country Road Middle School School Gets Virtual Visit from Top Author The Miller Place School District is busy embracing the digital age, hosting well-known Young Adult novel authors via Google Classrooms.

Kate Alice Marshall, author of the YA novels “I am Still Alive” and “Rules for Vanishing,” opened a new chapter for North Country Road Middle School’s book club to tell the story of her passion for reading and writing, as well as her personal life.

The group of book enthusiasts were eager to hear how Kate’s passion for writing began at a very young age and that her inspiration stemmed from her father, an avid storyteller.

Shoreham-Wading River High School Unique musical lesson for students

Shoreham-Wading River High School orchestra students had a unique learning experience when they attended a virtual instrument maintenance workshop.

Arranged by orchestra teacher Ashley O’Connor, the workshop was presented by Marissa Faltings, luthier and branch manager of the Long Island Violin Shop in Smithtown.

Faltings showed students a day in the life of a luthier as she presented directly from her workshop on how to perform basic repairs and how to properly care for and maintain string instruments.

She demonstrated various repair techniques and students were able to ask questions and engage in conversation over Google Meet.

Addressing health disparities amid the pandemic

Budgeting time to get involved Next week, residents across Long Island will vote on what their next board of education and budgets should look like.

Some districts have no unopposed runners, some have a handful of candidates vying for the same seat.

We are happy to see that, although some districts within our area are having hostile debates, people have been interested in this upcoming year’s budget and the candidates running for the BOE seats.

Oftentimes, parents and people in the community don’t know what’s going on until something happens — and that’s OK. Life is busy with working, raising a family and maintaining a social life — it can be hard to tune into a board meeting or flip through the pages of a proposed budget.

But we’ve noticed this year that it seems a little bit different. Maybe it’s because of the COVID-19 pandemic, maybe people are more concerned than before.

Whatever the reason is, we’re happy that residents are getting involved.

Whether it’s voicing your opinions or concerns over a school board election, or preparing for the 2024 presidential election down the road, it’s important to exercise those rights.

We have the luxury and the privilege to be a part of a democracy. People might not realize that the school board — that is “small” on the scale of things — has a huge impact on not just our children, but the community as a whole, especially regarding taxes Pay attention to these things, whether you have children in the district or not.

Read the local news and pay attention to what’s going on.

If you don’t agree with something, prevention is key — complaining after the fact on a social media post won’t do much when everything is already set in stone. Your vote can make a difference.

School districts across our coverage areas will be holding budget votes and board of education elections Tuesday, May 18. Check your district’s website for details on times and locations, and continue visiting tbrnewsmedia.com for updates.

Over the past year, our country has had to face some difficult realizations, including the hard truth that systemic racism is still pervasive today. We have seen it at play in housing, in hiring, and in policing. We have also seen it at play somewhere many may not think about: in healthcare.

COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact on Black and minority communities in many aspects, from unemployment and education to health and wellbeing.

Locally, there have been efforts to ensure that vaccines reach communities with minority populations.

Awareness efforts around the theme of being “vaccine ready” have intensified in April as part of National Minority Health Month, which has historically served as a time to raise awareness about health disparities that affect racial and ethnic minority populations.

Sadly, health equity is a very real issue that has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. The shortcomings in our country’s health system that have existed for too long are now front and center amid this public health emergency, and one issue that advocates are deeply worried about is maternal health.

About 700 to 900 new and expectant mothers in the U.S. die each year from pregnancy-related causes, and experts say that many of these deaths are preventable, according to published reports. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Black women – along with American Indian and Alaska Native women – are approximately two or three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes as white women are, and advocates are worried that these disparate rates of maternal morbidity and mortality of mothers of color are only being worsened by the pandemic.

It is a crisis that is being looked at by governments at all levels, from our nation’s capital to the legislature in Suffolk County. President Biden this month took several actions to advance health equity in the United States, including by issuing a presidential proclamation recognizing the importance of addressing the crisis of Black maternal mortality and morbidity. His

administration’s plans to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity include investing $200 million for implicit bias training for healthcare providers and to bolster Maternal Mortality Review Committees; providing $6 billion for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); and increasing funding for the HHS Office for Civil Rights by 24 percent to ensure that civil rights in healthcare are protected.

Here in Suffolk County, I was proud to support two recent initiatives put forth by my colleague Legislator Jason Richberg to study these important issues.

A Coronavirus Review Task Force is studying the economic, health, social, housing, and labor impacts of COVID-19 in Suffolk County, and part of its mission is to specifically determine which communities in the county were the most deeply affected. Additionally, a Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Task Force will study the rates of and trends in maternal morbidity and mortality in Suffolk County with a particular focus on women of color and aftercare. Members of this task force will include a wide array of experts including medical school and hospital representatives, community members, and healthcare workers including a doctor, a nurse, a midwife and a doula who provide services in a majority minority community in Suffolk County. The insight these professionals will bring to the table will be invaluable as we look to address these issues head on.

Implicit bias, systemic barriers and racial inequity — the same factors that are at play in our housing and job markets — are at play in healthcare and the consequences are literally a matter of life and death.

These issues are multi-faceted, and our approach to solving them must be as well. We in the Suffolk County Legislature remain committed to fighting for fairness in all aspects, healthcare included.

Opinion Anticipating the joy of seeing family in person

fter setting the American record for the longest consecutive streak of 340 days away from Earth aboard the International Space Station, astronaut Scott Kelly returned and flopped into a pool.

While we all haven’t been away from Earth for any length of time, we have been living in a modified version of the normal we knew.

Like Kelly, we have spoken with our close friends and family through electronic devices that beam them D. None onto a screen in front of us. of the above We have watched

BY DANIEL DUNAIEF some of their drained faces, as they isolated themselves for a month or more, battling through the cough, fever and discomfort of COVID-19.

We have also seen our relatives at much greater than arm’s length as we celebrated landmark birthdays, the birth of new family members, and socially-distanced graduations and limited-attendance weddings.

In two weeks, I am anticipating the familiar feeling of diving into a familial swimming pool.

That’s when I will see family members I haven’t seen in over a year.

We worked around our busy schedules not only to get vaccinated before we saw each other in real life, but also to do so long enough in advance of that meeting that our immune systems would have time to arm themselves against viral spike proteins.

This is the longest period my wife and I have ever been separated from our parents. We know how fortunate we are that our parents didn’t get sick.

We took nothing for granted, staying away from our parents and extended family. We might as well have been on the International Space Station, which was probably among the safest

places people have ever lived, given the limited social contact in a controlled environment 254 miles from the nearest pool, family member or pizza restaurant.

We feel so much closer to a more familiar life than we have in over a year, as we anticipate seeing our parents and family members who can attend our son’s graduation. The planned visit has become a dominant and daily topic of conversation in our house. We are wondering what food and drink to serve, how to move everyone from nearby hotels to socially-distanced seating at graduation and what games to prepare in our backyard for our grown children to play with their cousins.

These questions and decisions might have seemed like a responsibility prior to the pandemic, as hosting anyone requires attention to detail and consideration for our guests. That responsibility has transformed into the kind of privilege we might have taken for granted in other years, before the pandemic disrupted family gatherings and turned the calendar into a reminder of delayed gratification of family gatherings.

While we will likely engage in the Texas two-step, trying to gauge how close we can get physically to each other, it’s easy to imagine that hugs, kisses and appreciative smiles will bubble up from the excitement of a backyard that has hosted more routine gatherings of birds, squirrels and chipmunks than of the people who stare at flickering screens in our home.

As we prepare to dive into our own family pools of support, affection and love, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who made such a return to normal possible, from those who explored the basic science that led to the vaccine, to those who developed and tested the vaccine, to those who treated family and friends, to those who stocked the shelves with the food and drinks we needed to take us from the uncertainty of the pandemic to the anticipation of a celebration.

Absence made our hearts grow fonder for family and increased our appreciation for everyone who allowed us to reunite with the most important pieces of ourselves. In just a few weeks, we look forward to diving into a more familiar world.

The waves at the beaches are calm now, climbing the sand with rhythmic whispers, and the seagulls fly low, looking for a fish dinner in the clear blue water. Too soon, there will be motor boats and jet skis on the harbors and lawn mowers and leaf blowers keeping the landscape orderly — but not yet. The magic and peace of early spring are still, however briefly, with us to be treasured.

The smells at the beach of salt in the air and blossom-scent on the breezes are intoxicating harbingers of the season. Lilacs, that always know when it is Mother’s Day, perfume the neighborhood. And among us humans, there are always those early-bird few who fire up the grill and begin to barbeque on a sunny weekend afternoon. If we play our cards right, we might be invited to share in this primitive treat. The taste is so much better than anything cooked indoors.

Taste is tantalized by early fresh fruit, like locally grown strawberries, and by vegetables like baby asparagus and snow peas. Several

different kinds of dark green lettuces are also ready for dining early in the spring.

As for touch, there is the sweetness of a gentle breeze, reduced on a rare spring day from a stern wind to a caress against the cheek.

It carries with it the promise of a summer day and the seduction of a summer night.

Add to all of that, the temperature in spring can reach a universally perfect range. Now I know some people like it hot, really hot, even up in the 90s when they can happily sweat.

And some people like it cold, even freezing, during which time they can feel energized and stimulated to ski and ice skate. But all humans feel comfortable moving about in a temperature of 75 degrees. Knowing that could be found most months in San Diego almost prompted my husband and me to move there some 50 years ago. Of course, there were other things to consider, and we ultimately moved to Long Island.

Not for a moment do I have any regrets. My five senses are glad we live here.

Spring: a season for all five senses

T

his is the time of year when our five senses go into overdrive. Let me enumerate.

In no particular order of delight, I’ll start with sound. The birdsong is sometimes loud enough to provide dance music at a wedding. There are all kinds of musical bars put forth: crooning, warbling, shrieking, hooting, gurgling.

There is an incredible range of notes, from high soprano and countertenor to tenor and baritone, even bass.

Sometimes the birds seem to be singing in Between a chorus, other times you and me at counterpoint. If your

pretending to be an entire flock.

The sight of the birds is as much a treat as the sounds, if you can spot them among the leaves. They can range from a nondescript small brown chick, who nonetheless utters the most melodious songs, to crimson or orangebreasted or blue-tailed or grandly multicolored varieties of different sizes and shapes that perch briefly on the porch railing or snack on the front lawn. They can seem the model of purpose as they deliver food to the open beaks of their newly hatched offspring or of patience as they sit quietly atop the eggs and wait for the next generation to appear.

Speaking of sight, we go from the early purple of crocuses and joyful yellow of forsythia and daffodils to the lush pink of dogwood and cherry blossoms to the deep red of tulips and azaleas. All of that artwork is provided against a bright green backdrop of new leaves on the bushes and luxuriant attire for the tree limbs.
