The newly formed Shoreham-Wading River Chamber of Commerce will be holding an Earth Day cleanup Sunday, April 22.

Volunteers will meet at The Shoppes at East Wing for a photo at 9 a.m. and disperse from there to clean the neighborhood streets, beaches and woods.

Volunteers should bring gloves and heavyduty garbage bags.

If possible, the bags should be brought home and left sealed on the roadside for the next garbage removal.

The chamber of commerce is hoping each attendee can donate an hour of time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to clean up litter. If raining, a rescheduled date is set for April 29.

SWR district responds to pre-K cries of concern Parents say without numbers, $270,000 better spent elsewhere

Shoreham-Wading River school district added pre-kindergarten classes in its initial 2018-19 budget, but after receiving backlash from parents, the board unanimously voted to remove it from the plans.

“I’m a firm believer in early childhood education,” said Shoreham resident Megan Rowick, who said she attended the March 20 meeting in favor of the idea, but that her feelings quickly changed. “There are great benefits for social, emotional and cognitive development, and while not mandated by New York State I feel that pre-K is a gift.”

She explained what changed her mind.

“When I saw the plans I immediately had concerns, and I know I’m not alone,” said the pre-K, kindergarten and firstgrade teacher, whose son and 3-year-old

daughter would have gone through preK programs. “Why wasn’t the community surveyed to see who has children that will be 4 years old before Dec. 1 and who would be interested in this pre-K program? It would have been helpful to gather information prior to this, then you would know how many sections you really need, or who would choose our program.”

The board of education announced at its March 20 meeting the plan was to include the addition of part-time pre-K classes into the district’s $74,776,072 budget draft. To fund the proposed program and avoid piercing the tax levy increase cap while keeping at the current 0.9 percent increase budget-to-budget, $270,000 in contingent funds was worked into the draft. Kindergarten class sizes would have increased at Miller Avenue School to clear classrooms for the program.

“They say it’s going to be scenic, but where I’m from, you’re literally 6 feet from somebody’s fence — what’s scenic about that?”

final approval is expected to be received in October. The county would receive bids for construction in the fall with ground breaking expected to begin in spring 2019, ending in fall 2020. The total cost of construction is estimated to be $8.8 million, $500,000 of which will come from Suffolk County, and the rest from federal funds, according to Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (DMount Sinai).

“The vision in my mind is an ecotourism hub,” Anker said. “They can visit the Tesla museum, they can go into downtown Rocky Point, which really needs more passive traffic, they can stop in shops all the way into Mount Sinai.”

The plan does not include building fences around properties that don’t already have them. Privacy was a major point of concern for Rocky Point resident Gary Savickas.

“I have a 7-foot fence on my property, and with how high the trail will be, I will have people looking over my fence,” he said. “I would have to build a 30-foot fence if I wanted to keep eyes off my yard. I think we can spend that $8 million differently.”

Supervisor says state of town is ‘good and getting better’ Cutting costs, growing local economy, combating climate change, modernizing transportation among Romaine’s goals for 2018

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) is nothing if not confident about the future of the town he oversees.

Brookhaven Town’s leader delivered his annual State of the Town address at Town Hall April 3 in which he touted its financial footing while also looking toward the future.

“The state of Brookhaven Town is good and getting better,” Romaine said.

“Brookhaven Town, though not perfect, is still a town full of promise and hope. It is up to all of us who live here to help realize that promise.”

Brookhaven has a structurally balanced budget for the current fiscal year that stays within the state mandated tax levy increase cap, in addition to maintaining its AAA bond rating from Standard & Poor’s financial services company. Romaine detailed a few cost-saving measures he said he’d like to accomplish going forward, including more sharing of services among other municipalities as a way to streamline government and save taxpayer money.

“Sharing resources and services to reduce the size, scope and cost of government is one of the best ways to control and reduce expenses,” he said, adding the town remains in the running for a shared services grant from New York State that, if selected, would add $20 million to Brookhaven’s effort. “We must continue to closely monitor our capital and operating expenses. Our residents cannot pay more in taxes. Too many Long Islanders are leaving.”

He said growing the local economy through additional jobs was another priority for him and the town going forward.

Romaine said he still hopes Brookhaven will be selected as the second national headquarters for Amazon, which he said could bring in about 50,000 jobs to the town.

He also praised the work of the Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency, an arm

of municipalities dedicated to funding projects that will stimulate job creation and economic growth.

“The IDA closed on 20 projects that will result in $435 million of private investment and the creation of 4,050 permanent or [temporary] construction jobs,” the supervisor said. “In addition, the IDA has 13 approved projects that have or are about to close in 2018, with the potential for another $440 million of private investment into our town, creating or retaining another 1,000 jobs.”

Romaine detailed several “green” initiatives already underway or on the horizon in 2018, noting the real threat to Brookhaven posed by climate change and sea level rise.

“With the largest coastline of any town in New York state, the Town of Brookhaven knows full well that global climate change and sea level rise is real and poses significant challenges in the decades ahead,” he said.

He said the town has adopted a practice of “strategic retreat” from commercial and residential development in low-lying areas to allow nature to reclaim wetlands. He called land use and zoning among the most important powers a town government possesses. He also pointed to the imminent closure of Brookhaven’s landfill as a wake-up call in need of attention in the coming years.

He said the town is ready to work with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and other towns to formulate a regional plan for solid waste disposal.

The supervisor also made an impassioned call for updates to the Long Island Rail Road, including electrification of the Port Jefferson line east beyond the Huntington station, adding he co-authored a letter to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority asking for just that with Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) and Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R).

“It is time for a better transportation system, one based on 21st century innovation, not 19th century technology,” Romaine said.

A 19-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station allegedly stole food and cash from someone delivering Chinese food on Glenmere Lane in Coram at about 8 p.m.

Feb. 10, according to police. At about 9:30 p.m. the same day, she allegedly stole cash and food from another Chinese food delivery person on Andover Drive in Port Jefferson Station, police said. She was arrested March 29 in Port Jeff Station and charged with two counts of seconddegree robbery.

Laptop stolen

A laptop was stolen from an employee of a small business on Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station at about 9 a.m.

Disorderly conduct

At about 2:45 a.m. April 1, a 24-year-old man from Port Jefferson was walking on Main Street in Port Jefferson near the intersection of Arden Place carrying a full pizza box when he allegedly took the full box and smashed it in another individual’s face, according to police. He then allegedly proceeded to punch the individual in the face on the ground, police said. Groceries stolen

A 74-year-old woman from Miller Place allegedly stole miscellaneous groceries from King Kullen on Nesconset Highway in Mount Sinai at about 2 p.m. April 2, according to police. She was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

False report

While at Stony Brook University Hospital April 2 receiving treatment for a cut allegedly from a razor blade, a 29-year-old man from Farmingville allegedly reported he was robbed at gunpoint, with items being stolen from him and sustaining a cut from a razor blade, according to police.

Police said they determined the report of the gunpoint robbery to be false. He was arrested and charged with falsely reporting an incident.

Target larceny

A 24-year-old man from Ronkonkoma allegedly stole a Polaroid camera and tax software from Target on Pond Path in South Setauket March 26, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Open container

On March 29, a 49-year-old man from Ridge was in the parking lot of Jefferson Shopping Plaza on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station allegedly with an open container of alcohol. He was arrested and charged with breaking town ordinance on open alcohol containers.

Cash stolen from cars

At about 10 p.m. March 31, someone stole money from within a 2004 Mazda parked on Kool Place in Terryville, according to police. At about midnight, cash was stolen from within an unlocked 2017 Chevrolet also parked on Kool Place in Terryville, police said.

Supermarket theft

A 33-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station allegedly stole groceries from Stop & Shop on Pond Path in South Setauket at about 2:30 p.m. March 30, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Makeup stolen

Cosmetics were stolen from Duane Reade on Stony Brook Road in Stony Brook at about 10 a.m. March 28, according to police.

Power tools stolen

Three power drills were stolen from Ace Hardware on Route 25A in Setauket at about 5 p.m. March 28, according to police.

Landscaping tools stolen

On March 29, a 41-year-old man from Mastic Beach allegedly stole various landscaping tools from a business on Middle Country Road in Selden, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Drug bust

Between June 2016 and March 2018, a 21-year-old man from Middle Island allegedly was involved with multiple sales of cocaine, according to police. Police specifically alleged he sold heroin while on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station in January 2017 and crack cocaine on Hartsdale Lane in Coram in April 2017.

He was arrested March 28 in Selden and charged with second-degree conspiracy and two counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

President Donald Trump (R) signed the Adult Day Health Care Act into law this week, a bipartisan bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) that will expand access to health care for disabled veterans who need extra assistance and special attention in their daily lives, according to a press release from Zeldin’s office.

“This is important legislation that provides a valuable and necessary service to our nation’s veterans,” Zeldin said in a statement. “By expanding access to Adult

The bill defines the program as a reimbursable treatment option through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Previously, the program was only accessible for disabled veterans at three state veterans homes in the country, leaving the expense of health care oftentimes directly shouldered by the veteran and his or her family, according to the press release. One of the three homes was Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook.

The Adult Day Health Care Act provides comprehensive medical and personal care combined with engaging social activities for the physically or cognitively impaired, as well as an array of therapies and counseling.

With the passage of the bill, now those who are 70 percent or more disabled as a result of their service are able to access the in-home day care at no cost at any of the 153 state veterans homes in the U.S. “I am grateful to Congressman Zeldin for having the foresight to introduce this bill on behalf of all severely service-connected veterans who reside in state veterans

“This legislation helps to restore a veteran’s freedom to remain an active member of their community even after succumbing

to the perils of military service,” he said.

“Congressman Zeldin never forgets the sacrifice of brave women and men who donned the uniform to protect the freedoms we all enjoy today.”

The Senate version of the bill was sponsored by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah).

“Our nation’s veterans and their dedicated families have sacrificed enough,” Zeldin said. “This bill will give veterans the care they have earned while providing families with the support and relief they need to help their veteran loved ones to lead a fulfilling life, while keeping families together and strong.”

Uber now official ride of Stony Brook University athletics Stony Brook Athletics and Uber have partnered, and students and Seawolves fans will reap the benefits.

On Feb. 28 the university’s athletic department announced a three-year partnership with Uber, a location-based car service app featuring private drivers, under the slogan, “Official Ride of the Stony Brook Seawolves.”

Robert Emmerich, senior associate director of athletics at SBU, said the university has received positive feedback from students since the partnership was announced. He said no official data has been obtained yet to measure the number of rides being called for every day. He said one of the goals is to offer students and staff members discounts during high travel times in the near future.

“This partnership is beneficial for many reasons and all were considered while working out the details of the agreement,” Emmerich said. “Providing students and staff with a safe and reliable way to explore Long Island is certainly one of the main focuses of this partnership. The university is working on pickup and drop-off zones for Seawolves fans, and the locations will be finalized shortly. The Competition Automotive Gate 2 of LaValle Stadium is currently the designated pickup and drop-off point during the university’s lacrosse season, according to Emmerich.

“Teaming up with Stony Brook will allow us to provide an improved and convenient Uber experience for those traveling to and from games and around campus,” said Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s regional general manager for the Northeast in a statement. “Together, we will make sure students, fans, alumni and faculty have access to affordable, reliable rides.”

“I wish the conversation went differently — I absolutely support public education and I am a big proponent of a preK program in Shoreham-Wading River,” she said. “But it’s our job not to push our own agenda, and I hear what the community is saying and want to make a decision based on that. To potentially sacrifice the negative levy for a program I personally believe in, I think is a mistake. I would never want a budget, especially this one, which is an outstanding budget, to fail.”

Quentin’s elderly neighbor John Taranto said that, for the past two years, Quentin has taken it upon himself to shovel out his driveway when it snows and helps to mow his lawn in the summer.

“He’ll do anything for neighbors,” Taranto said. “He loves to do it, and he will not take anything in return. He tells me, ‘That’s what neighbors are for.’ You don’t find many kids like that. I always say that he was born in the wrong time.”

Perhaps nobody has been as impacted

by Quentin’s generosity as much as his own grandfather, Todd Freund, a Korean War veteran and former self-employed salesman.

Freund said he spent more than 35 years on the road — traveling across the country —

and believes he missed a large chunk of his children’s upbringing.

“Now I have Quentin, and it’s been a blessing to me,” Freund said. “We’re extremely close and definite kindred spirits. I consider myself so fortunate because he taught me patience — something I’ve never really had.

He and I will talk for two hours when I come over to visit, about everything. I know I sound like I’m talking about somebody who’s 60 years old, but Quentin has always lived a self-directed life and has always had integrity and honesty. I believe it’s nurtured by his mother. She’s quite some girl.”

As much as Alicia Palifka said she’d love to take the credit, her son’s altruism is all him, she said.

“The reason he wanted to be so involved with St. Baldrick’s is because our neighbor had a child before Quentin was born who passed away from cancer,” she said. “He’s been raising money in honor of this boy he never met. This is just who he is — he always wants to do the right thing by people.”

Jordan McClintock receives $30,000 scholarship Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) and Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) attended the Suffolk County VFW Council Voice of Democracy award ceremony to honor Shoreham-Wading River High School student Jordan McClintock.

The Wading River resident earned first place in the county and second in the district.

The nationwide award, a scholarship, is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

It is an audio-essay contest for high school students grades nine to 12 that provides more than $2.3 million in scholarships annually.

The first-place winner, who competes with all the first-place VFW department winners, receives a $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s college.

SWR alumnus graduates basic military training

U.S. Air Force National Guard Airman 1st Class Patrick J. Tooker graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman, a Shoreham-Wading River graduate, completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree at the Community College of the Air Force.

Tooker is a 2016 graduate of ShorehamWading River.

Sound Beach/Miller Place

Cub Scout pack tours local restaurant

Miller Place Cub Scout Pack 204 got some den requirements met as members toured George’s Kitchen in Sound Beach.

The owner showed the Cub Scouts the stoves, refrigerator, storage spaces and some of the areas for preparing foods, and the boys learned how to make dishes and clean their stations. As a treat, they received milkshakes.

Den leaders Kevin and Amelia Creedon, were happy to bring their Scout pack to George’s Kitchen.

“George is so generous to our community,” the leaders said. “He is a treasure.”

The boys that attended were Sean Creedon, Bernard Creedon, Marc Linderman, Colin Murray and Charlie Platt.

He said a recent project involves her co-chairing a team of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs professionals and DOE scientists involved in a big data initiative to improve health care for veterans.

Town of Brookhaven Office of Women’s Services has selected Kerstin Kleese van Dam, director of the Computational Science Initiative at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, as one of seven to receive the 32nd annual Women’s Recognition Award.

The town has annually been recognizing the contributions of women since 1986.

Awardees are selected for their service to the community as professionals or volunteers who live or work in the Town of Brookhaven.

Award categories cover a wide range of areas, from the arts and sciences to business, medicine, government, law enforcement, education, military, sports and religion.

Kleese van Dam is being recognized for her contributions to scientific computing and data management over the past three decades. Since being named director of the Computational Science Initiative in 2015, she has continued to build a comprehensive research program in data-driven discovery at BNL. The nearly 90 staff members under her leadership are tackling the challenges that come with capturing, storing, analyzing and distributing the large, complex volumes of data that scientists are generating at faster rates than ever before.

“I am honored and humbled to be recognized for work that I am deeply passionate about,” said Kleese van Dam. “My hope is that this award will inspire others to follow in my footsteps and encourage more women to choose a career in computer science.”

Prior to joining BNL, Kleese van Dam led several data management research and development projects in applied computer science at DOEs Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington state, where she served as associate division director of the computational science and mathematics division, as well as chief scientist and lead of data services. She arrived in the United States following leadership positions in computing at University College London Medical School and data management at the Science and Technology Facilities Council in Swindon, England.

Kleese van Dam is highly regarded within the computational science community. Her work in scientific data management was recognized with the 2006 British Female Inventors and Innovators Silver Award, and her research has led to the co-authorship of more than 100 publications. As an extension of classroom lessons, Rocky Point High School students in Rich Acritelli’s and Brooke Bonomi’s government and U.S. history classes met with Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. During the workshop, the newly sworn-in sheriff spoke about his life and professional career before opening up the floor to questions from the students. Toulon spoke about the moments that he felt best defined and helped to shape his life — including being a two-time cancer survivor. He urged the students to never take things for granted and to embrace their schooling.

“I really enjoyed kicking off my high school listening tour with the students in Rocky Point and fielding questions about my career in law enforcement,” Toulon said. “As county sheriff, I want to have a positive impact on the next generation. I want young people to know that their voice matters — and that elected officials really care about what they have to say.”

Following the meeting with the two classes, a small group of students participated in a proactive discussion about substance abuse and prevention as part of the sheriff’s Get to Them Before They Get to Me initiative.

Bringing the great outdoors, indoors Students at Miller Avenue School enjoyed a few weeks of climbing, zip-lining, crawling and swinging as the school gymnasium was transformed into Whittle Gym, a longstanding tradition.

Students maneuvered through a colorful forest of stuffed bears, trees, a campfire and more that represented the theme of the great outdoors. Physical education teachers Josh Bonventre and Katherine Carlson headed the assembly.

“Not only are there countless physical benefits from climbing, such as improving muscular strength and endurance,” Carlson said. “Our Whittle Gym unit also teaches and reinforces many character education skills, including working together, encouraging one another, critical thinking, goal setting and problem-solving.

As part of a social studies unit, Alice Steinbrecher’s second-graders created posterboards on America’s national parks.

Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) met with Rocky Point High School Life Skills students at Brookhaven Town Hall this past February.

During the visit, students had a chance to speak with Bonner and learn about her role and responsibilities as an elected official. The students were given a tour of Town Hall, where they met with other elected officials, commissioners and department heads. The visit was part of a

World of Work tour to help students learn about the different careers and jobs at various places within the community.

“It’s always a pleasure to meet with students and talk about their goals and aspirations,” Bonner said. “Being an elected official is such a rewarding experience and I always encourage young people to get involved in public service.”

Greater Long Island Running Club, of Plainview, will be awarding at least one $5,000 grant to a Long Island public high school track and field program this year.

Selection of the winning high school(s) will be based on: the need of the school; the purpose for which the grant would be used; the benefit to the program and the studentathletes who are part of the program; and the benefit to the community of which the high school is a part.

In 2016, the running club awarded a $5,000 grant to Brentwood High School to help reinstitute and revitalize the school’s cross country program, which had not been

offered since 2010 because of lack of funding.

In 2017, to help Central Islip High School kids afford running shoes, the club brought the entire boys and girls teams into Sayville Running Company for shoes.

“High school runners represent the future of our sport,” said Linda Ottaviano, the running club’s executive director. “We are thrilled to be able to help deserving high school programs, high school athletes and the communities that they are a part of.”

As rain and snow washed out most games across the North Shore April 2 and 3, TBR News Media caught up with how some the local teams have been doing so far this season.

Miller Place: The Panthers started the season with a 13-5 loss at the hands of Shoreham-Wading River. Ava Burns finished with two goals and an assist, Lauren Mancini added a goal and an assist and Madison Murphy and Ally Schreck each recorded a goal in the loss.

Hailey Duchnowski came up with 11 saves in goal.

Mount Sinai: The Mustangs have outscored their opponents 24-5 over two games to start the season. In a 14-4 win over host Ava Burns East Islip March 28, Camryn Harloff scored four goals and added two assists, and Meaghan Tyrrell recorded a hat trick and two assists. Gabby Sartori and Emma Tyrrell, Meaghan’s younger sister, each notched a hat trick and had one assist. Jenny Markey had eight ground balls and Morgan Mitchell had seven draw controls. In a 10-3 home win over West Babylon, Tyrrell had five goals and Morgan Mitchell added two goals.

Sienna Masullo had to made just five saves over the two games.

Rocky Point: The Eagles are spreading the wealth over their first two wins of the season.

Seven players got on the stat sheet in a 12-9 win at Hauppauge March 28 and five in a 10-6 win at Long Beach April 3. Brianna Lamoureux and Megan Greco each recorded a hat trick in the win over Hauppauge.

Lamoureux also added two assists.

Delaney Vu had three goals and one assist, and Madison Brianna Lamoureux Sanchez added two goals and three assists in the Long Beach victory.

Shoreham-Wading River: Isabella Meli scored six goals in Shoreham-Wading River’s season-opening 13-5 win over Miller Place March 28. Erin Triandafils added five goals and an assist and Gabby Cacciola made 12 saves in the cage. The Wildcats followed it up with a 9-7 loss at Bayport-Blue Point April 3.

Triandafils recorded two goals and an assist and Mikayla Dwyer notched one of each.

In a 12-0 home win over East Hampton March 26, Jessica Iavarone went 3-for-3 with two triples and an RBI and Mackenzie Droll went 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Iavarone was also strong on the other side of the ball in another 12-0 win at Elwood-John Glenn. She and Amelia DeRosa pitched a fiveinning combined no-hitter and both homered.

Iavarone struck out three and walked five to earn her first varsity win and DeRose struck out five of the six batters she faced in her first varsity appearance. In a 2-0 home win over Islip March 28, Emma Acevedo opened the scoring with an RBI double, driving in Carissa Militano in the bottom of the first inning to open the scoring, and Andreya Weaver had a sacrifice fly to right that drove in Acevedo in the same inning. Hannah Burton earned the win, pitching six innings and striking out six.

Mount Sinai: The Mustangs made a statement with their first two wins of the season, shutting out their opponents 31-0.

First, Mount Sinai recorded a 17-0 win over visiting Rocky Point.

Lové Drumgole hit for the cycle with Lové Drumgole four runs scored and four RBIs. Alaina Reilly added a double and a triple with four RBIs in her first varsity game.

Julia Golino threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts for the win. In a 14-0 win over visiting East Hampton March 28, Holly McNair went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs, and Emma Wimmer went 3-for-3 with a home run. She also pitched a complete game with two hits and 10 strikeouts.

Rocky Point: The Eagles started the season with two big losses. After a 14-4 defeat at the hands of Mattituck March 23, Rocky Point was shut out by Mount Sinai March 27, 17-0. Allison Kaspar threw four strikeouts over five innings pitched, in the loss to Mattituck.

Melissa Shoreham-Wading River: Marchese hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Wildcats a 5-1 lead, and Katlynn McGivney went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two doubles for Shoreham in a 5-3 win March 27 against Kings Park.

Victoria Coman tossed a Victoria Coman complete game and did not allow an earned run.

Miller Place: Three solid wins have helped the Panthers made Xavier Arline a statement to start the season. Landon Agic defeated Noah Teaney, 7-5, 6-0 at second singles to lead Miller Place to a 5-2 win over visiting Port Jefferson March 24, and Matt Molinaro defeated Luke Clark 6-0, 6-1, at third singles in a 6-1 home win over Patchogue-Medford before capping off the streak with a 6-1 win at Comsewogue March 28.

Mount Sinai: The Mustangs have started off the season 1-4. Mount Sinai took losses to Harborfields (5-2), Bayport-Blue Point (5-2), Stony Brook (4-3) and Ward Melville (7-0).

Mount Sinai’s only win of the season came in a 4-3 edging of Middle Country March 20.

Hayden Strittmatter defeated Brandon Kittle, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the deciding match at third singles for the nonleague win.

Alex Bonacci went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Trey Miller was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win. The Eagles dropped a close 4-3 decision in Game 2, March 27, to miss out on the sweep.

Shoreham-Wading River: The Wildcats have started the season with a 3-0 sweep of Miller Place. Ryan Mullahey went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jesse Keshner went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI to lead ShorehamWading River over Miller Place in Game 1, March 26. T.J. Wachter struck out one over four innings to earn the win.

The Wildcats won Game 2, 1410, the next day.

In a 10-2 win in SWR baseball Game 3, March 28, Mason Kelly went 2-for-2 with a grand slam and three walks. Kelly also struck out five and scattered six hits in five innings.

Russel Maher, Brandan Ventorola and Tyler Gatz were also contributors in both games, with Maher grabbing five goals in the first game. Anthony Romano made six saves against Sachem East and Matt Sageder stopped 15 WHB shots.

Rocky Point: The Eagles split their schedule to start the season. First, Peter LaSalla had four goals and three assists, and Zach Gill added four goals and one assist to lead Rocky Point to a 14-7 season-opening win over Middle Country March 26. Teddy Accardi finished with two goals and an assist and four others scored in the victory. Tyler Kotarski made 14 saves and Nick Chiuchiolo had eight stops. In a close 13-12 loss to visiting Half Hollow Hills West March 27, LaSalla, Gill and Accardi each finished with a hat trick and LaSalla and Accardi added an assist each.

Shoreham-Wading River: Tim Cairo had five goals and one assist and Xavier Arline had two goals and four assists to lead ShorehamWading River to a 13-4 season-opening win over Sayville March 27. Zach Colucci added two goals and two assists and Kyle Boden tallied one of each.

The quickest growing segment of the oral cancer population is young, healthy, nonsmokers, according to Stony Brook Medicine.

Commonly associated with tobacco use, oral cancer can strike anyone.

In younger populations the incidence of this form of cancer is on the rise in part due to exposure to the human papillomavirus, which is why oral cancer screening is important.

In support of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine will host free oral cancer screenings April 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in

the front of Stony Brook University Hospital.

Oral cancer screening takes 10 minutes or less. At the Stony Brook event, screenings will be performed in the school’s Mobile Dental Clinic by health practitioners. A noninvasive technology, called the VELscope, a light technology to screen suspicious lesions, will be used during the screenings.

Oral cancer is not a rare disease, with nearly 50,000 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. There is an 80 percent survival rate when oral cancer is detected early, according to Stony Brook Medicine.

Rails to Trails needs upkeep after completion We were among those excited to hear the long-discussed 10-mile bike trail from Mount Sinai to Wading River Rails to Trails project finally seems to be getting off the ground.

With work expected to begin in spring 2019, the LIPA-owned property will be put to great community use with countless benefits for both locals and visitors to the area. We have heard complaints from residents whose properties abut the trail, and we’ve also heard of issues at other comparable trails on Long Island. It is incumbent on the organizers of this project — Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai), engineering firm NV5 and the county’s Department of Public Works — to not only hear but also act on resident concerns all along the way.

While we understand having a trail suddenly run through your backyard can be a disruptive new addition to a home with the potential to attract strangers, we would argue unused woods can also attract undesirable behaviors. This is not to say that steps shouldn’t be taken to buffer the trail from property lines. We are confident that an amicable compromise can be reached as long as residents’ concerns are truly taken into account.

The popular Long Island Greenbelt Trail, which is overseen by the nonprofit Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, is regularly in need of volunteers to help maintain and clean up the massive trail.

To its credit, the group has a tab on its website where hikers can submit reports about issues or problems along the trail. Something like this would be great when the Mount Sinai-to-Wading River project is complete. Building a bike trail for residents and tourists alike to enjoy and utilize is great in theory, but maintaining it and keeping it vibrant is another project entirely. We would even propose the newly created chambers of commerce in each of the hamlets through which the trail runs divide the 10 miles and host quarterly cleanups.

We were also glad to hear mile markers will be included on the trail to make it easier for people in need of emergency assistance to let authorities know where on the trail they are located. We’d like to see something similar to what Cold Spring Harbor State Park implemented a few years ago to ensure safety for users of the trail.

Suffolk County police officer James Garside helped develop and implement innovative GPS-enabled trail markers there, and since installation in 2017, a man who suffered a heart attack on the trail was saved thanks to the availability of his precise location.

We also hope this new trail is like the Setauket-Port Jefferson Greenway Trail in one specific way.

“From the 6th Precinct’s standpoint there haven’t been any spikes in burglaries or home invasions on the [Setauket-Port Jefferson Greenway Trail],” Community Oriented Police Enforcement unit Sgt. Walter Langdon said during a discussion about safety on the new trail. “With the right-of-ways, people can already access the rear of these houses.

With more people on the trail, there’s more people to call 911. In a way, it’s safer.”

Projects for public good are always great by us, but keeping a neighbor-friendly status will require attention and work.

Zeldin: Get your priorities straight On March 24, my husband and I went to Stony Brook University’s March For Our Lives where SBU students and parents walked with placards joining their brethren in hearts and minds who were marching in Washington, D.C. They, as many other people in cities across the country, were stating their views regarding the anti-gun movement.

As I watched, I thought how nice it would be if our local Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) joined and assisted the enthusiastic youngsters in their quest. After all, he is supposed to be caring for his people, not their guns or their right to massacre others with them.

There was also a march near Zeldin’s office in Patchogue, a thousand strong. Knowing Zeldin’s history on this issue, I

knew that he would not be marching, not wanting to explain why he is a pawn of the National Rifle Association and has been since 2015. He wasn’t there. For all we know, he might have been in the company of Trump in Mar-a-Lago.

The congressman of ours, who is supposed to support and protect his constituents, was supporting the NRA with his silence. Not surprising, after all he accepted more money from the NRA than any other New York congressperson in the 2016 election cycle with Rep. John Katko (R-Camillus).

Obviously, money and power are foremost in Zeldin’s mind and heart. He once told the Long Island Advance that he is his “own man and I make decisions based on my own beliefs.” As such, 2018 is the time for Zeldin to be

uprooted from his seat in Congress and from his plans of one day being president which, by his kowtowing to Trump, is probably his strategy. After all, he follows everything his leader decides. Additionally, he goes along with every NRA blueprint.

Your time is up Congressman Zeldin, leave your constituents something better than what you foresee as power. Give them what you promised. Not a false sense of power but a true sense of goodness and helpfulness, not a shrewd schemer with a Machiavellian script but a man of political distinction. There is still time to be a true man who saves us from bullets and a false sense of priorities.

Wisdom, election don’t go together In response to the letter titled, “Trump is no fan of appeasement,” in the March 22 edition of The Village Times Herald, I must congratulate George Altemose on his jaw-dropping, unconditional loyalty to “chump” in the alternate universe that has been created through this administration. Honestly this letter read like political satire, dripping with head-smacking allegiance to a man who is single-handedly dismantling every aspect of our democratic government, as well as our foreign alliances across the globe. Apparently, though, “we are fortunate indeed that the American people had the wisdom to elect a president” ... I must cease my paraphrasing there in order to retain my dignity.

Under no circumstances may

wisdom and “the election” of “chump” be relegated to the same occurrence. Without Russian collusion and an inept, outdated, unnecessary electoral system, the true winner would be in the White House today. Unfortunately, though, this election was trifled with and now we have a lunatic who is trying to deflect from the Mueller investigation by claiming that he and “little rocket man” are going to have a little meeting.

And “chumpets” like Mr. Altemose believe that this “president” is protecting us from the big, bad world.

Should we also commend “chump” for calling his buddy Putin to congratulate him on an election win based on murder and intimidation? Is the fact that our “president” made this call despite

warnings from his legal team and his Republican cronies not cause for concern?

The actions of this White House inhabitant are unprecedented — and not in the good way his supporters believe — and are putting us in a very precarious situation that will simmer until it blows.

Our only saving grace is that Mr. Mueller is in the final stretch toward liberation from this horrific administration and hopefully the damage will eventually be undone.

With November in sight, those who continue to assuage “chump’s” maniacal behavior will be voted out, allowing for a path to resurrection of our democracy and a sense of sanity in Washington, D.C.

Encouraging praising, not judging Praising a brave Parkland student is the right thing to do, and I almost thought Elio Zappulla was coming around to reason in his letter, “Praising a brave Parkland student,” in the March 22 edition of The Village Times Herald. Until, that is, he wrote that he wanted us to attentively note that this brave student is of a minority group.

What on earth does that have to do with his brave actions? “Sadly, Latinos, along with other groups, are often victims in our country of senseless prejudice,” he wrote.

Which, of course, Elio just had to mention. So clearly, only certain people have the ability to judge — yeah, I like that too, “judge” — from criteria derived “almost exclusively from what the individual has done, or said or written.” And judging by “race, religion, ethnic origin, etc.,” is “alas how un-American.”

Sarcasm follows: I’m glad Elio pointed this out to us dumb, ignorant, stupid, un-American idiots. Who do you suppose he is referring to? Can you say basket of deplorables?

I am saddened to see that Elio feels he is better than those of us whom he’s so astutely categorized as the group with senseless prejudice — how ironic. He should stop acting like a 10-year-old kid.

His comments are sometimes entertaining, but I’ve stopped being amused by them because I realize that he actually believes them. Just give it a rest.

Standing tall on the volleyball court

I

looked around the packed Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia this past weekend.

Let’s face it, I and — more importantly — my genes, fell short.

It’s not necessarily a character flaw, but it’s not exactly the kind of advantage I’d want to give my children.

There I was, cheering on my vertically challenged daughter in a game where height matters. Despite her stature, she has developed a royal passion for volleyball. The perpetual smile

when she’s throwing her small body around the floor, trying to get to some giant’s smash that seemed only a moment earlier out of her reach.

When you have children, you want them to find their way, to develop outlets that they find rewarding and to contribute to something bigger than they are.

Sports, I know, don’t cure disease.

And yet, somehow, it’s become part of the American way, with people flying, driving and caravanning from all over the country to play in competitive tournaments where, if they succeed, they can get enough points to make it to nationals.

So, there we were, listening to whistle after whistle at this volleyball attention-deficit-disorder factory when it occurred to me how my genes did my daughter no great favors. Many of the fathers towered over me. If I lived in a land where food were placed near the ceiling, I and my offspring would starve.

My mother played volleyball when she was younger. She was tallish for her generation. I played volleyball

as well, although not nearly at the competitive level that has taken my daughter to places around the area, including Penn State.

While my daughter is involved in numerous activities inside and outside school, it is volleyball that tops the list. When we go on vacation anywhere, the first thing she looks for is a place to play volleyball.

As I watched her warm up for the third match of the day, I chatted with some of the parents from Virginia, Texas and Arizona that we met this past weekend. After some pleasantries about the event, the conversation inevitably turned toward the identity of our daughters.

I could see the satisfaction they felt at pointing out their children from across the convention center floor. “My daughter is the one ducking her head down to walk under the exit sign over there.” “My daughter? She’s just a hair over 6 feet tall, but she’s still growing. How about you?”

I’d smile sheepishly. “My daughter is in the middle of her teammates

over there.”

“Where?” they’d ask politely.

“She’s No. 9.”

They’d squint into the group. Just then, my daughter would laugh her way to the outside of a circle of girls that looked like a group of gnats, diving in and out of the center of a circle of joy.

Then again, as I watched her throw herself across the floor, I thought about the match between her personality and the role she plays in this sport. Sure, it’d be easier for her to stand out if she were taller. But, given her need to defy expectations, she’d probably want to be a jockey if she were 6 feet tall.

As the weekend came to a close, I asked her if she wished she could play volleyball every day. “Of course,” she said.

“Can you imagine having a job one day that made you feel that way?” I asked.

“Yeah,” she smiled, trying to imagine a job that fits her interests as well as volleyball.

about 30-45 minutes, but between the prep at the office and the recovery, it’s a two-to-four hour event.

The first time I had this test, I wanted to be awake to see the inside of the intestine, which is actually quite beautiful. It looks like a braid, as much more surface area can effectively fit into a small area. Tiny red and blue blood vessels crisscross the sides.

Of course in order to see all this clearly, the intestine must first be totally cleaned out, which is probably the less pleasant part of the whole deal. Some fasting is involved, anything red, like a tomato, or a seed or nut that might block the view, is to be avoided, and in the last 12 hours before the test, a liquid laxative that spikes 64 ounces of Gatorade is ingested.

I was advised to wear loose and comfortable clothing and to leave cash and jewelry at home. Upon arrival, I was given two of those infamous hospital gowns, one to face front and the other the rear. My clothes were secured in a locker, and after a thorough history was unhurriedly taken, the nurse placed an intravenous (IV) line into my arm.

After my first experience, I chose to be fully sedated this time. I was given the good news, that all was well, when I awoke. As a result of the sedation, however, I could not just get up and drive but needed to be accompanied by a companion. In my case it was my son, who could steer me through the hallway and into the car, then drive me home. Shortly after I arrived back in the kitchen, I realized I was ravenous and began refilling my intestine.

There is a mild bit of bloating after the test as a result of the air that is added, but that is not particularly uncomfortable and disappears within hours. I was advised not to drive a car, operate any machinery or power tools (unlikely), drink any alcoholic beverages or make any important decisions until the following day.

There are other forms of the colonoscopy that are somewhat less invasive, but my understanding is that this variant is the most thorough and therefore the most desirable. As for the silver lining? I did appear to lose a couple of pounds, at least for now.

So what is a colonoscopy? I write to explain the test in the hopes of encouraging any readers who might be postponing and avoiding that appointment to take care of that little task once they turn 50. It is my understanding that in most cases, health insurance will cover the costs, which in itself is evidence of the importance of the test. And the experience is not so awful. In fact there is, so to speak, a silver lining, but more about that later.

Here are the details. A flexible tube, called a colonoscope, with a video camera on the end that is connected to a large screen in the room, is inserted through the rectum and allows the gastroenterologist to examine the inside of the large intestine. The physician then searches for any abnormalities such as polyps, which can turn into cancer, and usually removes them.
