Narcan courses abound Concerned that a loved one will overdose on drugs? Suffolk County is hosting training classes over the next few months to teach residents how to identify overdoses of opioid drugs — such as heroin, Vicodin and Percocet — and use the anti-overdose medication Narcan to rescue victims. The county’s parting gift for people who show up to the program is an emergency resuscitation kit that contains Narcan as well as a certificate of completion.

Classes in February are a bit of a hike for Miller Place, Mount Sinai, Rocky Point, Shoreham, Sound Beach and Wading River residents. The first, on Feb. 4, will be held at the Mattituck firehouse on Pike Street from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (RSVP to ihateheroin631@gmail. com). Mount Sinai proposes a budget for 2016-17 ‘We try to plan as best we can for what we’re going to be faced with.’

While the town prepared for snow, Mount Sinai school district is preparing for another school year and another budget.

With the 0.12 state tax cap limiting how much a school districts can increase their budgets for the 2016-17 year, Mount Sinai residents will pay around the same in taxes. The district is maintaining its current programs and necessities, like transportation, with its $57.2 million budget. But it’s a guessing game when it comes to the school’s proposal.

“We’re basically shooting in the dark — not knowing what’s going on with the state,” Superintendent Gordon Brosdal said. “So we try to plan as best we can for what we’re going to be faced with.”

The district budgeted for around $16.5 million in aid, but Sweeney says they don’t know how much state aid they’ll receive. The school is currently following Sen. John Flanagan’s (R-East Northport) effort to nix the Gap Elimination Adjustment.

Since the 2010-11 fiscal year, the GEA has reduced every school district’s budget to combat a fiscal crisis in the state.

Mount Sinai is currently losing around $1.24 million per year to the GEA, but it may regain revenue for the 2016-17 academic year if the government repeals the law.

“They owe us eight years worth [of money],” said Robert Sweeney, president of the Mount Sinai board of education.

With a tax cap of nearly zero, the district doesn’t intend on increasing its tax

levy. The school district will maintain its $38.5 million levy from the 2015-16 academic year, despite its 0.7 percent budget increase. According to Brosdal, increases in administrative charges were one of several items that affected the budget. The school district is also devoting more money to technology and transportation.

Brosdal added that the district will have to make some cuts before finalizing its budget. He didn’t specify where they will make those cuts, but said they

will discuss the budget further during the Feb. 10 board of education meeting.

The budget workshop will cover personnel items and special education items.

Despite the low tax cap, the school district plans to stay within the cap, unlike some other districts. Brosdal said “there are many districts that will probably pierce the tax cap” for their 2016-17 budgets. But for now, it’s a waiting game to see how much state aid and wiggle room school districts will have to cater to their budget.

Mt. Sinai fourth-graders raise money for ALS research

Mount Sinai elementary students are giving Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis sufferers more hope for a cure.

On Jan. 20, several Mount Sinai elementary students and faculty members were honored with a Silver Banner for their more than $1,000 donation to ALS research during a board of education meeting. Special guest Christopher Pendergast, an ALS sufferer and the founder of ALS Ride for Life, joined the students, their families, faculty and board members to present the banner in recognition of their effort.

Of the hundreds of schools that participated in the ALS Ride Across Long Island in May 2015, Superintendent Gordon Brosdal said Mount Sinai Elementary School was “one of the select groups to raise over $1,000 ... the money raised by these students and staff and community helps provide hope and essential services.”

The students recycled water bottles to raise money last academic year when they were in fourth grade. The group was also part of the student council, which raises money for seven non-for-profits, including ALS Ride for Life. On behalf of the student council, the group also sold onedollar paper baseballs, which they hung around the elementary school’s cafeteria.

“We’ve been raising money for Mr. Pendergast for over a decade ... probably

around 15 years,” fourth-grade teacher Kevin Walsh said.

In the past two years alone, Walsh’s students and two other fourth-grade classes have contributed around $2,000 to ALS research. According to student council advisors Mindy Sullivan and Marcella Walker, the council contributes $500 to ALS research annually. About two students from each fourth-grade class are on the council.

For 10-year-old Gabriella Amato, raising money for ALS was personal.

“My grandfather’s friend died because of ALS,” Gabriella said. “So that charity is really important to me.”

Pendergast spoke about how raising funds for ALS research helps students learn how to overcome obstacles, persevere and make the world a better place.

Pendergast grew up in and went to school in Mount Sinai. While the list of schools he personally visits gets shorter and shorter, Pendergast never fails to visit his hometown and school.

“We like to think that we do a very nice job teaching character education in our schools,” Mount Sinai Elementary School Principal John Gentilcore said during the meeting. “But when [Pendergast] comes to visit, it’s truly a lesson in grace and per-

Walsh’s students, alongside two other fourth-grade classes in the school, are currently collecting water bottles to continue raising money for the disease. For Pendergast, their persistence and effort to financially contribute to ALS research was worth highlighting.

“In a climate of negativity and cynicism, Mount Sinai’s schools’ compassion and commitment brilliantly shines as an example of education at its best,” Pendergast said. “The world will be a better place because of this school.”

POLICE BLOTTER Out to pasture On Jan. 22, police arrested two men from Stony Brook and Setauket for assault with intent to cause physical injury. According to police, the men, ages 22 and 23, punched and kicked another man in the head and face on Sheep Pasture Road in Port Jefferson. The victim was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital while the assailants were arrested at the scene, at 3:08 a.m.

Going to the gifts Police arrested a 50-year-old woman from Bay Shore on Jan. 20 for petit larceny. Police said the woman was in a home improvement store on Middle Country Road in Selden when she took several faucets and falsely returned them for a gift card. The woman received a $475 gift card and left the store without purchasing any items. Police arrested her later the same day.

Lean on me An 18-year-old from Coram was arrested for driving while ability impaired on Jan. 21 after she failed to maintain her lane on Route 25A and was veering onto the shoulder. Police stopped her at the corner of Hallock Landing Road in Rocky Point and arrested her.

Make him sweat On Jan. 18, police arrested a 47-yearold man from East Setauket for petit larceny after he stole two sweaters from a residence on Spyglass Lane. Police didn’t say how the man entered the residence.

Criminal helps police A drunk driver helped police nab him on Jan. 21 when he mistakenly thought he was being pulled over. According to police, as officers were pulling over another vehicle for a traffic stop at the corner of Route 25A and Chestnut Street in Mount Sinai, the 48-year-old DWI suspect, who is from Ovideo, Fla., also pulled over. Police discovered the man was intoxicated and arrested him at the scene, charging him with driving while ability impaired.

Drifting into an arrest A 21-year-old woman from Smithtown was arrested for driving while ability impaired on Jan. 21. The woman was driving north on Route 25A when police pulled her over for speeding and failing to maintain her lane.

Missing moola According to police, residents on Old Homestead Road in Port Jefferson reported that money was missing from their home. Police didn’t know how much money was missing but said the incident happened on Jan. 21 at 10 a.m.

Just beet it: Juicy mix works in heavy snow BY elana Glowatz

Suffolk County got tucked into a stark white blanket over the weekend as a blizzard barreled through the Northeast.

The storm did more than sprinkle flakes over the streets like residents saw with the dusting a week earlier — it dumped inches upon inches of snow onto the area, burying roads, roofs and vehicles, along with any ideas about making it through the winter with only mild weather.

Tallies from the National Weather Service showed about 2 feet of snow in many places on Long Island following the storm, which has been commonly referred to as Winter Storm Jonas, with counts going even higher in other places around New York.

The accumulation over the course of the roughly 24-hour snowstorm brought back memories of the February 2013 storm dubbed Nemo and the January 2015 one called Juno that both walloped the area and sentenced residents to hours of shoveling in order to dig themselves and their cars out of the mess.

In preparation for the storm, the Brookhaven Town Highway Department had stocked up on beet juice — not to hydrate workers during cleanup efforts, but to enhance the effectiveness of the salt it

spread on roadways. According to a statement from the department, mixing the juice with the salt keeps the salt working at lower temperatures: “Traditional salt melts ice on roadways down to about 15 degrees; once temperatures drop lower, the salt stops working. Adding beet juice to the mix improves salt’s performance, enabling it to continue melting ice at temperatures as low as 15 to 20 degrees below zero.”

Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro (R) said that his crew used about 600 gallons of beet juice on one of their trucks.

“I was very pleased with the results,” he said. “Treating the salt with the beet juice … allowed us to use nearly one-half less salt by boosting its melting power and helping it stick to the roads.”

The department is still deciding whether to make the beet juice a permanent addition.

“Anytime we can apply less material, save taxpayers money and still have the same, if not better, results, it’s a winwin,” Losquadro said.

The beet juice cocktail came just days after news that the highway department had finished building two new salt storage spaces in southern Brookhaven Town to help crews treat roads during

poor weather. The facilities are located in Holtsville and Manorville and together hold about 2,000 tons of salt, according to the town.

Brookhaven had previously constructed a new salt storage unit in Mount Sinai, in 2014.

During last winter, when Long Island was hit with much more frequent snowstorms, salt supplies dwindled and left municipalities scrambling for more.

“These two new facilities have in-

creased the town’s available road salt material by 10 percent,” Losquadro said. “Increasing our salt capacity on the ground will make Brookhaven more self-sufficient and rely less on our supplier’s availability to deliver this critical winter resource.”

Three more salt sheds are planned for the next 18 months, according to Brookhaven Town. Those additional three sites will bring the town’s salt capacity to 25,000 tons.

Taking the right high school courses aids in applying Your turn

The new semester is in full swing now.

Spring is on the horizon, and high school students are aching for summer to arrive.

The next school year seems far away, but students should use this time as an opportunity to think about the future and especially about how they can maximize the rest of their high school career.

College admissions is more competitive than ever.

High school matters, and the earlier a student recognizes this fact the better off they’ll be. Accountability is key. Students need to take charge of their futures by planning their class schedules and polishing their activity record. College admissions counselors notice effort, and it is the great separator between merely good applicants and great ones.

The courses you take in high school matter for college admission. Always challenge yourself appropriately. And take heart: It is never too late to change your course. Senior year is as good a time as any to take a more challenging course load.

Future and current high school freshmen should think about the degree of challenge they want in their courses. It’s true that tougher college-level courses often make for a stronger college applicant. Struggling in these accelerated courses is not the answer, though. Students should play to their strengths while challenging themselves as much as possible.

Future sophomores and juniors should use the spring to reassess their academic performance. If normal-pace Regents classes are too pedestrian, students should look for opportunities to add accelerated courses to their schedules. If accelerated classes are too grueling, students should identify the subjects that might be better taken at the Regents level.

As tempting as it may be for top students to take every accelerated class, this might not be the right approach. Instead, try to be keenly aware of your academic strengths and weaknesses. Build a well-rounded class schedule that is balanced for your individual strengths.

Are you strong in the humanities? Challenge yourself with college-level history and English classes. Don’t neglect your math and science courses, though. Take Regents phys-

ics after you finish chemistry. Go for precalculus or statistics rather than finite math.

Students should never feel as though their shot at getting into a “good” college is ruined if they forgo accelerated classes. I know students who attend some of the most elite colleges in the country despite not taking a single accelerated course in high school. Challenge yourself appropriately, and no door will be closed to you.

Future seniors should be sure to continue to achieve at a level consistent with the rest of their high school career. Admissions counselors may only see first-quarter or first-semester grades when making an admission decision, but schools often request

final transcripts. Colleges want to see sustained effort. That is, don’t elect four lunch periods senior year.

Colleges look for four years of English and history, then three years of foreign language, science and math. Though many high schools don’t require four full years of all of these subjects, students would be wise to go above and beyond minimum graduation requirements.

On Long Island, most high schools only require students to take science as far as biology (living environment) and math as far as trigonometry (algebra II). But why stop there? Taking precalculus could strengthen an academic transcript. The same could be said for a year of physics or forensic science.

Students of any ability can strengthen their transcript by going beyond minimum requirements.

Students can build a strong case by challenging themselves appropriately and going beyond basic requirements. Create future opportunities by taking advantage of all that your high school has to offer, and by building a rigorous class schedule around your personal strengths. Start thinking about it now. When it comes to college admissions, effort matters.

New York Blood Center is hosting the event, which will run from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the community center on East Broadway in Port Jefferson.

All donors must have a valid identification, weigh at least 110 pounds and be between ages 16 and 76. However, 16-year-olds must have parental per-

mission to donate blood.

People who have gotten tattoos in the past 12 months are not eligible to donate blood.

That’s what Mollie Adler’s father said to her before he died several decades ago.

And she hasn’t looked back since — even as she is fighting to save her family and her home with her new business “Miss Mollie’s Brownies.”

Around two years ago, this single mother of two hit hard times when her divorce left her struggling to afford for her Shoreham home. Last September, Adler also lost her part-time job and with it, the ability to pay her mortgage.

With kids to feed and a home to worry about, baking brownies became Adler’s best bet.

Adler established her business after applying to New York’s Self-Employment Assistance Program last year. She was accepted into the program in October and started recycling water bottles to help pay for brownie ingredients. She’s currently selling her brownies at the Port Jefferson Winter Farmers Market.

“She’s always wanted to pursue a career in baking,” Denise Rohde said. “Her brownies honestly are her claim to fame.

It’s almost like getting laid off was a blessing in disguise because it gave her time to actually pursue her dream.”

Rohde, of Baiting Hollow, met Adler nearly 17 years ago and has seen her through the many obstacles in her life — including the first time Adler was laid-off several years ago. After losing her second job, Adler decided to pursue her dream.

“I just had to reach and say this is what I’m going to do,” Adler said about

creating Miss Mollie’s Brownies. “I’m going to do it for me. I’m going to have hours that make sense for me and I want to empower myself.”

But a chronic health condition further complicated Adler’s life when she started losing her sense of smell and taste.

While she can taste salty or sweet foods, she can’t taste flavors, and has no sense of smell. Regardless, her fudgy brownies have friends, family members and clients coming back for more.

months old, Adler has a wide range of brownie flavors including classic, espresso and nutty. Some seasonal flavors include apple pie, s’mores, mint and lavender, which she’s perfected with the help of her children who taste-test the brownies. But their help doesn’t stop there.

Adler’s daughter Melanie was the first to tell her mother’s story. Now, with the help of Adler’s graphic designer Gary Goldstein, Adler’s clients can read her story on the tag tied to each of her brownies. Goldstein met Adler more than a year ago, and started designing the labels and tags for her business. In

that time, he’s seen her tenacity as she works to save her family and her home.

“She deserves this,” he said. “She deserves not only things going well for her, but to be successful because she’s a dedicated mom and she’s hard-working. Like everyone else in life, you have your ups and downs, but this is a woman I envision being successful.”

In 2014, according to www.singlemotherguide.com, nearly 12 million families in America were single-parent families. According to Port Jefferson resident Pat Darling, a friend of Adler, some single parents don’t always pick

themselves up when they hit hard times.

“I think when a person is down, instead of staying there they should reach, and they should dream — and she’s reaching for her dreams,’ Darling said. “I hope they all come true.”

Adler doesn’t just want her dreams to come true. She also wants to show her kids and single parents alike what dedi-

cation and perseverance can achieve. She said she hopes to create a place for single parents to help them through their hardships once her business takes off.

“Everyday I get up and do whatever it takes to get this done,” Adler said about building her business. “I’m not going to stop until “Miss Mollie’s Brownies” is a household name.”

Miller Place mixes kindness with academics The Miller Place school district recognized 10 students from the high school for random acts of kindness and educational achievement. The students received either their Outstanding Acts of Kindness award or Outstanding Academic Recognition award at a breakfast in the presence of family and friends.

Recipients of the Outstanding Acts of Kindness award have been “caught” in the act of being great. The students display selfless behavior and helped someone in need with no expectation of material return. They demonstrate the sense of spirit the district aims to achieve throughout its school community and are role models

for others. This year’s awardees include Serena Mangino, Hallie Benson, Emily Hampson, Emily Lambert, Wayne Wesemann and Nicole Volovar.

To receive the Outstanding Academic Recognition award, students must distinguish themselves as academic inspirations and have efficiently risen to

the educational challenges presented to them. The students either met long-term goals or are students who have exhibited commendable improvement. Recipients include Jake MacMonigle, Ricky Abreu, Emily Bruno, Wayne Wesemann and Anthony Santangelo. Wayne Wesemann received both awards.

Miller Place Scout pack visits Town Hall On Jan. 14, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) hosted Cub Scout Pack 204 of Miller Place at Brookhaven Town Hall. They spoke to the Scouts about the history of the town and the functions of town government.

Romaine stressed the importance of how decisions made by their local elected representatives impact their daily lives.

“I truly enjoyed speaking with the

Cub Scouts who asked very good questions,” Romaine said. “They are the leaders of tomorrow who will contribute toward the betterment of our community.”

Councilwoman Bonner said the Cub Scouts is a great organization and it’s always a pleasure to have them at Town Hall.

“It was refreshing to see how knowledgeable about history they were,” she said, “and their curiosity about town government.”

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) announced her appointment as chairwoman of the Seniors & Consumer Protection Committee for 2016.

The committee has jurisdiction over matters pertaining to the Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs and the Office for the Aging. The committee will also deal with matters concerning senior citizens at any level of government, including the development and implementation of prescription drug programs.

“It is an honor to be appointed Chairwoman of the Seniors and Consumer Protection Committee,” Anker said. “My district has one of Suffolk County’s largest senior populations, and I look forward to continuing to advocate on their behalf.”

Since entering office in 2011, Anker has made senior and consumer protection issues one of her top priorities.

OBITUARIES William Bornstein

William Bornstein, 90, of Mount Sinai, died peacefully at home on Nov. 30. Born on June 8, 1925, in Milton, Mass., he was the son of Julius and Minnie.

He served on the Navy cruiser, USS Canberra, during World War II. Bornstein graduated from Michigan State College. While there he met and married Joan Fielstra. They had three children.

His career at Brookhaven National Laboratory began in the early days of computers and spanned 30 years. He was active in the Mount Sinai Volunteer Fire Department.

Bornstein sailed and was the longtime treasurer of the Mount Sinai Yacht Club.

The Hartlin Inn in Sound Beach was his lunchtime home away from home. He enjoyed woodworking, classical music, bird identification and weather observation, and he was passionate about social justice. All these activities were marked by his sharp intelligence and ready sense of humor.

He was divorced from Joan, who died in 2013. He is survived by his companion Daisy Menkes-Klein; daughter Awtar Kaur Khalsa; sons Jay and Edward; grandchildren Gurusurya and Max; sister Selma; brother Sam; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial was celebrated at Bryant Funeral Home after a private cremation.

Donations in Bornstein’s memory may be made to The Fortune Society or to a charity of choice.

Joan Driscoll

Joan Driscoll, 87, of Wading River, died Jan. 15. Joan was born July 2, 1928, in Brooklyn.

She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary McShane. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Charles and is survived by two loving daughters, Eileen Lipinsky of Wading River and Patricia Haight of Bluffton, S.C., and one son John of Rocky Point. She is also survived by 10 cherished grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on Jan. 19 at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church in Rocky Point. Burial followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram. All funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Rocky Point Funeral Home.

Dolores Marie Jaskiewicz, 75, of Ridge, died Jan. 19.

She is survived by her loving sisters Dianne Scamardella of Ridge, Arline Murphy of Florida, several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins.

Steven Woods

Steven Michael Woods, 56, of Fleming Island, Fla., passed away on Jan. 18.

Woods was a native of Port Jefferson who moved to Florida in 1987 from Syracuse.

Woods was the owner of Woody’s Wheels in Middleburg, Fla., and made it known how much pleasure he gained in working with people to complete a deal.

In his free time, he enjoyed shooting guns, fishing, theater or simply having a glass of wine and watching a good movie. Woods loved the Lord, was a member of Christ Church and attended New Life Fellowship.

Woods is survived by his wife Annette; two daughters, Nicole Marie Ingram and Brianna Lee; stepson Alec Bjorn Anderson; parents, Patricia and Burton Woods; and his brother Jeff.

The Mount Sinai wrestling team is locked in a three-way tie at the top of League VI after taking down Sayville 6215 on the road on Jan. 22. As the curtain drew to a close in the final meet of the regular season, Miller Place and ElwoodJohn Glenn won their final games, knotting all three teams at 6-1 going into Wednesday’s opening round of playoffs.

Mount Sinai came out fast, winning four of the first five matches with standout pinning performances from five grapplers, including senior Matthew Eisenblaetter, who laid out his opponent at the 3:39 mark at 170 pounds, and sophomore Jake Croston, who put an end to his match in the first period at 220. There were also two major decisions, highlighted by eighth-grader Mike O’Brien winning his matchup 11-2 at 106 pounds.

Mount Sinai head coach Matt Armstrong said his team has been able to hold its own despite having three eighth-graders and 11 ninth-graders on the roster.

“The younger kids wrestle in a lot of tournaments and I have an eighth-grader, Matt Campo, who’s an absolute hammer,” he said.

At 99 pounds, Campo dropped that hammer on his opponent with a pin early in the second period. Campo was an All-League wrestler last year as a seventh-grader, and with his win, the underclassman, whom his coach said is the future of Mount Sinai wrestling, improved his record to 24-1.

Team captain Shane Walker, a senior at 195 pounds, also ended his match by pinning his rival a minute into the second period for his 14th pin of the season, improving his record to 19-1. Classmate Keith Williams pinned his opponent at the 1:37 mark in the 120-pound weight class.

Two-time All-League player and senior co-captain Daniel Henry defeated his foe in a major decision, 11-3, and at 160 pounds, fellow senior Leon Paul took victory with a 7-0 decision in the 145-pound weight class. Mike Zarif, a sophomore, edged his challenger 5-2 at 126 pounds.

Paul, a two-time All-League wrestler who is now 24-2, said he was somewhat surprised in his matchup, because he expected more from his opponent.

“I was successful in my takedown,” said Paul, adding that he was happy with his overall performance.

Winning by forfeit was Lionel Paul, Leon’s twin brother, at 138 pounds, as did sophomore Robert Christ at 285.

“Sayville did well — they did better than I expected,” Lionel Paul said. “Our team did well, and our heads were in it tonight.”

Lionel Paul added that he’ll go running every day leading up to the start of the playoffs.

Also winning by forfeit was Luke Marino, a senior at 182 pounds, who talked about what his team will do to prepare for Wednesday’s postseason opener.

“Were just going to be practicing like we’ve done all year” Marino said.

Not all must be governed

In an attempt to promote transparency, the New York State Joint Commission on Public Ethics recently proposed requiring public relations consultants to register as lobbyists if they are trying to influence editorial writers.

That would mean any public relations professionals who contacts a reporter or editorial board in an attempt to get the media to advance their client’s message would be considered to be delivering a lobbying message.

Several New York public relations firms and New York Press Association members immediately spoke out against this proposal, and we side with them and share their concerns.

To force anyone to report to the government before they speak to a reporter seems dangerous, and almost medieval. It treads on freedom of speech if the government is effectively regulating newspaper content, and interfering with a newsroom staff’s ability to independently and objectively judge its sources on its own. On top of that, it is an example of government butting its nose into what are largely privately owned companies — a place it has no business giving orders.

On the surface, it seems as though JCOPE is paying the press a compliment, saying the news media are so valuable that it wants to help preserve the public watchdog’s objectivity. But, in an ironic twist, within the same stroke it would be compromising the independence of the Fourth Estate by controlling its sources.

Freedom of the press is one of the rights America was built upon and relies upon to this day, and this move would tramp on the media’s liberty to print the issues and concerns of the public without needing permission from the government. One of the main jobs of a reporter is to evaluate whether a source is credible and whether a story is newsworthy. Let’s keep this task out of the hands of the government and in the hands of the people who make these decisions every day.

As a newspaper that takes pride in serving the community before anyone else, we stand against this proposal to restrict our communication and we hope you will too.

TO ThE EDITOR: I am not a commuter on the Port Jeff ferry, but I do have to use it from time to time, especially in the winter. It’s shocking to me that, with oil currently under $30 a barrel, the fare remains the same as when oil cost more than $100 a barrel.

The seed money led to the founding in 2009 of the Center for Communicating Science, offering students an opportunity to learn how to connect with a range of audiences through various types of training, including improvisational acting, which is the only training Alda received.

Improv requires people to listen to what other people are saying and build off of that, forging connections through shared common ground, Schneider said.

“One rule of improv is that you say, ‘Yes and,’” said Elizabeth Bass, a founding director at the center.

“You have to take what [the other person] gives you and add to it.”

Valeri Lantz-Gefroh, the improvisation director at the center, came from the world of theater to the center. She said Alda helped her learn more about a “skill I’ve been working on for 30 years by teaching it in a different way.

That gift has come from Alda.”

Indeed, scientists who have taken these courses suggested that they have been invaluable in helping them deliver their message and connect with their audience.

Colin West, a research assistant at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook, took six courses at the center. Before he attended the classes, he said he was introverted.

“It’s not enough to eschew the jargon from my own vocabulary,” West said. “I should be trying to understand the jargon and phraseology that’s typical in their patterns of thought and incorporate them into my language.”

Alda has also helped a wide range of scientists. He has “made many of us look from the outside at what we do and ask how we can do better in telling our stories and be more engaging about our fields,” said Louise Leakey, a research professor in the department of anthropology at Stony Brook who works on human evolution in Africa.

Alda asked Leakey to sit on the advisory board at the center because she was working to make the fossil collection accessible online and set up a citizen science project in paleontology.

The notion of sharing science with non-scientists has only recently become more acceptable and more popular, in part

because scientists are struggling to get funding for projects ranging from basic science exploring physical properties at an incredibly small scale to discoveries that might help treat diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s disease or schizophrenia, researchers said.

Alda has continued to be a driving force at the center, which, in 2013, was renamed the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. In what friends suggest was typical self-deprecating fashion, Alda said he was flattered that the school was named after him and suggested that, to that point, only a horse had shared his name.

Committed to the center and passionate about science, Alda continues to keep a schedule that would exhaust someone half his age. Years ago, he shot his final episode of The Blacklist, in which his character, Alan Fitch, dies.

That night, Alda flew to Chicago to give a talk as the keynote speaker of the American Association of Medical Colleges to an audience of more than 1,200.

Alda didn’t get his wake up call and got up 20 minutes before his 8 a.m. speech, when he inspired leaders about the need to share science with the public.

That night, Alda flew back to New York, where he opened on Broadway in a matinee of “Love Letters.”

Bass said Alda’s work ethic has inspired others at the center.

“We want to help” these efforts become “an important part of his legacy,” Bass said.

When a local surgeon made a diagnosis and told him the procedure, Alda said he’d need an end-to-end anastomosis. The surprised surgeon asked him how he knew that, and Alda said he used to pretend to perform that in the show “M*A*S*H.” Friends, colleagues, and scientists appreciate the active intellectual life Alda and Arlene Alda, who have been married close to 59 years, share.

Arlene Alda, a photographer and children’s book author, and her husband have numerous books in their house, Strogatz said. They use these books to continue to feed their curiosity. Alda has also asked Strogatz to give him geometry problems to solve.

“He works on them with great effort for weeks or months at a time,” Strogatz said.

For Alda, the final product, however, is less important than the process. And that process continues as Alda heads into another decade.

These days, the people who imagine his distinctive voice aren’t picturing Hawkeye Pierce in a red robe running to a helicopter so much as they are looking for inspiration in their efforts to share the wonder and beauty of science.

“Sometimes when I have to explain a complicated topic to a nonscientist, I imagine Alan sitting next to me and asking me questions like I’m a guest on Scientific American Frontiers,” West said. “Trying to envision what questions he would ask often helps me figure out what answers to give.”
