TOWN Gyrodyne: Residents traffic concerns are valid

Gyrodyne LLC has admitted its own traffic study proves that St. James and Stony Brook residents have good reason to be concerned about the traffic impact of their proposed project.

Gyrodyne made a formal presentation of its future plans for the nearly 75-acre property Nov. 15 to the Smithtown Planning Board and a standing-room only crowd. The developer has proposed to subdivide the Flowerfield land in order to build a 220-unit assisted living facility, a 130,000-square foot medical office building and a 150-room hotel with a restaurant, conference space and day spa/fitness center.

“We are not looking to maximize yield here,” Richard Smith, director of Gyrodyne and a St. James resident, said. “We are looking to strike the right balance between economic development, which I think we all know the St. James community desperately needs, and to preserve and enhance the environment we all love.”

Nearly 100 residents and Brookhaven elected officials packed the meeting to make clear their opposition to the project’s traffic impact on Route 25A, Mills Pond Road and Stony Brook Road.

“Town of Brookhaven is opposed to any traffic created as a result of this proposed subdivision emptying out onto town roads and, specifically, Stony Brook Road,” said Brenda

Prusinowski, deputy commissioner of planning and environment for Brookhaven Town, reading a statement for Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (R). “This road is overcrowded now, particularly because of usage from the university, and does not need additional traffic from a project outside our town.”

Jennifer Martin, aide for Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartwright (D-Port Jefferson Station), echoed the supervisor’s sentiment and made clear the town is “staunchly opposed to any additional traffic” on Route 25A as well.

Mills Pond Road homeowner Laurie Kassay said she opposed the project despite promises from Gyrodyne it will create an estimated 900 new jobs and generate

$90 million annually for the economy.

“The area cannot handle any more traffic,” Kassay said. “If there’s 900 jobs, that’s 900 more vehicles on the road on a daily basis.”

The developer hired Woodbury-based Cameron Engineering & Associates who performed a traffic study focusing on 16 intersections off Mills Pond Road, Moriches Road, Route 25A and Stony Brook Road surrounding the property. The results were submitted to the Town of Smithtown and New York State Department of Transportation in October 2017, but have yet to be reviewed.

“The concern of the traffic impact is completely understood,” said Kevin McAndrew of Cameron Engineering. “The traffic impact study has confirmed why the concern is valid.

A number of the 16 intersections studied today have poor or failing conditions.”

If Gyrodyne’s plans go forward, McAndrew said the firm has proposed traffic improvements be made at six intersections. The intersection of Route 25A and Mills Pond Road should have traffic signals installed, according to the traffic study, which also suggested NYS DOT design a roundabout at the intersection of Route 25A and Stony Brook Road in addition to traffic mitigation measures at four additional intersections on Stony Brook Road.

State Assemblyman Steve Englebright (DSetauket) was outraged at the suggestion of a roundabout being installed on the historic Route 25A corridor in front of the William Sidney Mount House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. He urged the planning board to reject Gyrodyne’s plans, stating that in his opinion as a scientist, it’s not environmentally sustainable and instead encouraged Smithtown town officials to work with Brookhaven in future development of the region.

“Our communities have a long history of cooperation,” Englebright said. “I hope we don’t have to set up canons on the border.

There are some really upset people on Stony Brook Road.”

Conrad Chayes Sr., chairman of the Smithtown Planning Board, concluded the board would hold off on a decision until an environmental impact study is completed by the town, which he said may take up to a year.

Town St. James doctor joins SBU Hospital team in Puerto Rico

By Rita J. Egan rita@tbrnewspapers.com Many in Puerto Rico still reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Maria recently received much-needed medical care from a Long Island hospital.

There were 23 staff members from Stony Brook Medicine stationed on the island from Oct. 24 to Nov. 8 as part of a 78-member relief team consisting of professionals from New York metropolitan hospitals. Three physicians, two nurse practitioners, nine nurses, four paramedics, four nursing assistants and one pharmacist from Stony Brook put their skills to use to help those with physical aliments and relieve overloaded hospitals in Puerto Rico.

The Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu “Bincito” in Manati, Puerto Rico, was the temporary workplace of 19 from Stony Brook, while four others assisted at Hospital HIMA San PabloFajardo for a week, followed by another seven days on the U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort, which is docked in Old San Juan.

Dr. R. Trevor Marshall, emergency physician and director of Emergency Medical Services at Stony Brook, said he and 18 others worked with the Disaster Medical Assistance Teams — part of the National Disaster Medical System — Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Army at the coliseum in Manati.

“It was a nice way to be able to provide additional resources down there to help the

local community,” he said.

The physician said the staff members treated patients with diarrhea, conjunctivitis, abscesses, severe cuts and broken bones. Marshall said the patients were appreciative, and the staff was grateful for local students who volunteered their time to translate.

Dr. Richard Scriven, associate professor of surgery and pediatrics at Stony Brook University, was one of the doctors working alongside Marshall at the coliseum. While driving from the airport to the arena, he said he could see half of the homes were covered with the tarps that the Federal Emergency Management Agency provided to protect the houses that lost roofs during the Category 5 hurricane.

He said the staff would alternate working 12-hour shifts, slept on cots in the mezzanine section and bathed in outdoor showers.

Scriven said food was provided from the local veterans agency, nearby residents and appreciative patients who bought them pizzas.

The physicians said DMAT tents were set up outside the arena, where many patients were treated for minor ailments. Inside were 50 to 70 inpatients who were frail and on ventilators and mostly relocated from nursing homes.

Scriven, who lives in Stony Brook, said he and others would walk to the nearest Walgreens, and while Manati didn’t have as much damage as other areas, many were still without power and he didn’t witness any utility crews working on restoring it.

“Yet the people were so nice, so appreciative and really amazing,” Scriven said.

Emergency Medical Specialist Dr. Rolando Valenzuela, a St. James resident, who spent time volunteering in Fajardo and on the USNS Comfort. He said the hospital in Fajardo needed help with its emergency room, and the New York medical professionals assisted with ambulatory patients and mostly dealt with benign medical complaints. He said a number of people were in distress because they were unable to get treatment for diabetes or use medical equipment such as nebulizers and oxygen concentrators without electricity. Others were experiencing health problems as a result of a lack of water or medications.

Valenzuela said many hospitals on the is-

land are low on supplies and are operating on generators. Any kind of extensive imaging or lab work wasn’t available on site; however, the staff had basic medications, antibiotics, IV fluids and EKG machines on hand.

“The medical infrastructure is ground down to a halt,” Valenzuela said.

Patients with more serious problems in Fajardo were transported to San Juan or to the USNS Comfort. The ship was staffed by Navy personnel and DMAT tents were set up outside for ambulatory patients. Valenzuela said medical professionals from around the country working in the tents saw 500 to 600 patients a day. Patients with serious conditions were transferred to the Comfort.

“I can’t say enough about how amazing the Navy personnel was,” Valenzuela said. “These guys had been on board for over a month before they were allowed off the ship. They were getting a few hours of sleep here and there but their main focus was on treating patients.”

Valenzuela visited Puerto Rico in the past and remembered how friendly the people were, and said despite the devastation on the island, the residents were in good spirits.

“The people were extremely enthusiastic to have us there,” he said. “They were so grateful for any kind of assistance. They just wanted to make sure that they weren’t being forgotten, and we did our best to provide them with the standard of care that would be acceptable on Long Island. I think we were successful.”

Two KP gas stations charged with sale of alcohol to teens

Suffolk County Police arrested two people during a month-long investigation at businesses located within the 4th Precinct.

Officers from the 4th Precinct Crime Section conducted an investigation into the sale of alcohol to minors from Oct. 20 to Nov. 17 during which nine local businesses were checked for compliance with the law.

Two clerks were arrested and charged with unlawfully dealing with a minor in the first degree after they sold alcohol to a minor: Thomas Watson, 22, of Northport, employed at Speedway gas station, located on East Northport Road in Kings Park; and a 16-year-old male, employed at BP gas station located on Pulaski Road in Kings Park.

Both Watson and the teen were issued field appearance tickets by police and are scheduled to appear in First District Court in Central Islip Jan. 2, 2018.

The state liquor authority is conducting a follow-up investigation.

According to police, several gas stations within the 4th Precinct were investigated and found to be in compliance with state laws. They include a BP gas station and a Shell gas station, both located on Commack Road in Commack; a Citgo gas station, located on Crooked Hill Road in Commack; a Speedway gas station, located on Jericho Turnpike in Commack; a Speedway gas station, located on Indian Head Road in Kings Park; and BP and Mobil gas stations, located on West Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown.

Tackan Elementary School’s fifth-graders put Goldilocks on trial Nov. 9. The mock trial was based on the events that happen in “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.”

Goldilocks was accused of trespassing at the three bears’ home, eating Papa Bear’s porridge and leftover chicken, stealing money (petty larceny), trying on Mama Bear’s dresses and breaking Baby Bear’s rocking chair (criminal mischief).

Students acted as prosecutors against Goldilocks, while others portrayed lawyers attempting to defend her actions. Other fairy tale characters were called to testify as witnesses including the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, the Three Blind Mice and more.

After hearing all the facts, the jury of fourth-graders handed down a verdict and sentenced Goldilocks.

Kings Park finishes third in state tournament

The 20-0 Kingsmen were confident as they headed upstate, blasting Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” to get excited to compete in the state championship at Glens Falls Civic Center Nov. 18 and 19.

“We knew that we had all the tools to be successful, and we were anxious to get on the court and execute,” senior Lexi Petraitis said. “We’re such a tight-knit team, but what hurt us a little bit was that our nerves didn’t kick in until the first serve of our first set.”

After splitting pool play sets 3-3, Kings Park was eliminated from contention for Sunday’s state championship, but outscored Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake to

tournament, every team there is elite.”

The Kingsmen amped up the intensity in the semifinals, battling for every point in a 25-19, 25-22 win.

“I feel like we had moments where we weren’t so sharp, but as the day went on we straightened it out,” senior Haase said.

“Being a Kingsman has been the greatest honor and I look forward to seeing the program grow.”

Benson agreed, adding how much she wishes others could share in the seasoned legacy her team has experienced.

“Being a Kingsman is something most people will never experience and I wish they could,” she said. “It’s really an amazing thing, especially with this team, knowing I have 17 best friends and sisters that I can depend on. It’s really special to me and I don’t take it for granted. I just wish I had more time with them.”

salvage a third-place finish. Last year, the Kingsmen made it to the final match where they fell to Walter Panas in straight sets.

“There were sets where everything just clicked,” Petraitis said. “We had Meagan Murphy getting sick digs, which made it easy for Haley [Holmes] to set perfect sets, which our big hitters, me, seniors Kara Haase, Erika Benson, Sam Schultz and freshman Liv Benard, slammed into the ground. I think we played to our absolute fullest potential. Out on the court our energy was electric. There were just a few sets that didn’t really go our way.”

Kings Park faced Williamsville East first, dropping set one 26-24 before coming back to win the second 25-12.

“We gelled more during that second set and then throughout the day we just had to realize what worked and what didn’t and change things up,” senior Benson said.

“Our ultimate goal is to place first, but third is still something very special, something that we’re proud of. It’s been a great season with my team and I really loved every minute of it.”

Benson said she appreciated how supportive everyone in the district community was. The team was sent off to states escorted by the Kings Park Fire Department and led by the high school’s marching band, with members of the high school and elementary school marching, too. The positive mindset carried through the weekend even as the team stumbled in trying to capture a state championship.

“We practiced hard all year with states in the back of our minds — entering the tournament, our mindset was to take it one set at a time and to not look too far ahead,” senior setter Holmes said. “We ended up not executing the way we had hoped, but we stayed positive and worked as a team.

Politicians must fight to keep SALT deductions

As the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate work on their respective versions of the tax bill, news sources indicate that House Republicans from high tax states have gained a key concession from GOP tax writers to retain the local property tax deduction on the federal income tax.

However, it’s not such a key concession, since the deduction for state and local taxes (SALT) would end. This would still result in an increased federal tax burden for residents of New York

and other high tax states.

Republican legislators and Trump administration officials justify the elimination of SALT deductions by claiming that it forces the rest of the country to subsidize homeowners in high tax, big-spending states.

Not so! High tax states such as New York, New Jersey, and California pay more dollars into the federal tax system than they get back in federal spending.

The low tax states get more federal tax dollars than they

pay. So, who is subsidizing whom? Eliminating the SALT deduction will make this disparity much worse.

Our elected representatives, especially those from the Republican party, must fight to keep the SALT deduction.

Latinos have a long history in the states Efforts of the Trump administration to deport many hardworking, fine Latinos are highly offensive. It is important to note that certain ethnic groups, such as the people we call Latinos, came to this hemisphere long before other Europeans, except for some brave Scandinavian explorers who explored the Northeast coast. Just look at the names of towns and villages and states, etc., especially in the West. So many names are Spanish: California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, San Antonio, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Sacramento, San Diego and on and on.

The huge Spanish or Latino influence in this country came into existence many decades before other Europeans began to arrive. The Spanish were the first Europeans to inhabit the Western Hemisphere— led by an Italian, Columbus. America was named after another Italian, Amerigo Vespucci, I proudly say, since I am of Italian descent.

With a few exceptions, people

from Spain inhabited almost all the countries south of us, from Mexico to Chile. Spanish is the leading language there.

The Spanish even founded the first permanent city in North America: St. Augustine, in Florida (and “Florida” is a Spanish word) and inhabited areas of our far west and southwest long before other Europeans arrived and decades before the United States was established. Thus, the Spanish are in no sense strangers or newcomers to this land.

It is outrageous for the Trump administration to mistreat Spanish immigrants so shabbily — by tightening or introducing unfriendly and quasi-prejudicial rules or by building hateful walls.

The Spanish have made a huge mark on our country and an even greater one on the countries south of us. Of course, let’s not forget that our Native Americans, whom we should greatly respect but who have been terribly treated, had already been in North and South America for

millennia before Europeans. That is another story.

The Trump administration’s attitude towards Latinos is a sickening, moral crime. I suggest that Mr. Trump go revisit the Statue of Liberty, an immense and outstandingly thoughtful gift from France, and read Emma Lazarus’ words: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” That is America’s primary reason for existence. Let people come here to establish better lives for themselves.

Every American is either from another country or is the descendant of people from another country. Let’s remember what our Declaration of Independence correctly says — that we are all equals. No ethnic or racial or religious group is superior to any other.

Study America’s history, Mr. Trump, and stop your disgraceful, embarrassing, thoughtless, anti-American actions.

ere we are, Thanksgiving Day, and I’d like to share some things I’m not thankful for. I recognize, of course, all that I do have to be thankful for, but in this moment and in this year it seems fitting to make a not-so-thankful list.

Nicknames: They’ve become ubiquitous. I never liked the nicknames Joe Girardi had for all the Yankees, usually adding a “y” at the end of their last names.

Pundits: Everyone on TV, in the comment section of news articles and on the internet seem to know better than everyone else. Some of these pundits seem to be playing a game of mad libs where they change the names, dates and details about their punditry, but their perspectives and their “shame, shame, shame, he’s a bad Democrat/ Republican” outrage get old incredibly quickly. If you have no new thoughts, then don’t pretend to offer something new.

Fake news: It’s a convenient label for those who don’t like what they hear. It’s a way to undermine the messenger. I know there are news organizations who play fast and loose with the facts. There are also members of the media who have made a point of blending editorial and news, decrying the lack of moral — or even logical — leadership in Washington. Still, many reporters are eager to find facts and to give people a chance to make decisions for themselves. Ultimately, many journalists are serving society by shining lights in dark corners and by sharing information that informs the public. Without the news, people would need to rely on official sources to tell them their version of the truth.

That doesn’t sound very democratic.

taste so good and why can’t I stop at just one or six pieces? Can’t they add string beans or cauliflower to the pie to make it slightly less palatable?

Misspellings and myselfisms: I know that seems incredibly elitist and English-language snobby of me, but I bristle at emails urging me to do something before it’s too late. I would like to reply that it’s “to” late to correct their emails. As for the “myself” problem, I have heard someone say several times in the last few weeks, “If you have a problem, you should talk to Ted or myself.” Really? My problem is that if you took Ted out of that sentence, you’d be suggesting people talk to myself.

Teenage odors: Yes, I know the teenagers are growing, their hormones are surging and they are some of the most active people on Earth.

Still, get a group of them in a room, in a car or in any confined space and you might long for the innocent days of diapers and spit-up.
