Dilapidated Old Northport Road building demolished A dilapidated house located at 110 Old Northport Road has been demolished by Town of Smithtown workers after a protracted back and forth between the property owners and town.

Two days after the town board’s Nov. 6 meeting, in which members voted unanimously to enter onto the property to begin demolition, payloaders and dump trucks were spotted at the site as the structure was being dismantled.

William White, Smithtown’s Building Department director, previously told TBR New Media the Kings Park building was deemed a danger to the public. Problems included the interior falling apart and vagrants entering onto the property, according to Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo (R).

Kings Park Estates II, a development company, is the owner of the building as well as the surrounding 26-acre property where it is planning to build a large development of 42 single-family homes, according to a draft environmental impact statement document submitted to the Town of Smithtown. These homes would cost between $550,000 and

The Town of Smithtown demolished a derelict, zombie house on Old Northport Road owned by KPE II after several promises by the developer it would take action.

$600,000 with lots ranging between 10,000 and 20,000 square feet. The site was formerly home to a concrete business, an industrial welding yard and concrete cesspool storage as well as the small building now being torn down, according to the environmental study.

Smithtown-based attorney Vincent Trimarco Sr. and Edward McCabe of the Uniondalebased Sahn Ward Coschignano law firm, both lawyers for KPE II did not respond to requests for comment.

During the Oct. 9 town board meeting,

assistant town attorney Martin Simon said the developer allegedly promised it would be taking down the derelict building once asbestos was removed from the property. However, town attorney Matt Jakubowski gave the company an ultimatum that if it did not start deconstruction of the building by Nov. 6, he would recommend the town demolish it.

Inzerillo said KPE II will see the cost added to the property’s tax assessments. “[KPE II’s owners are] trying to make everything work, so we are entering onto

this property, but he is paying, and it will be taken out of his taxes,” Inzerillo said. “He has the funds to sit back and deal with other things.

We can do it a lot faster than he can right now.”

In 2017, the town released a draft environmental impact statement stating it did not expect the proposed development to have many growth-induced impacts. It noted the surrounding industry sites along Old Northport Road may impact homeowners on the proposed site, including soil erosion, dust, loss of habitat, odors and truck traffic on local roadways.

Smithtown opens bids for recycling contract, hopes for a solution With bids in for the Town of Smithtown recycling contract, town officials have a big decision to make that may change how and when residents take their bins to the curb.

“Perhaps there’s a market for it — perhaps these bidders have a place where they can bring it,” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R) said prior to the opening of the bids.

The Town of Smithtown has been left without a recycling-service provider since Oct. 29 when Green Stream Recycling, the Town of Brookhaven’s recycling contractor, voided its contract with the town. Smithtown, among other local municipalities, had an agreement with Brookhaven to sell all its recyclables through Green Stream for a profit.

Now, Smithtown has been left without a recycling contract and has been dumping all its recyclables at the Municipal Services Facility located on Old Northport Road in Kings Park.

The facility has approximately two-to-three weeks before it is full to capacity.

The town unsealed four bids for its recyclable materials Nov. 8. Two bids, received from West Babylon-based Winters Bros.

Hauling of Long Island and Islandia-based Trinity Transportation, offered both singlestream recycling and dual-stream recycling.

Single-stream recycling is the process of taking all recyclables in a single can and everything would be sorted at a facility. Dual stream requires residents to sort out different types of recyclables, including different kinds of plastics, metals and papers, and putting out each kind of material on different days of the week for collection.

Smithtown officials estimate the town picks up 11,500 tons of recyclables each year.

If the town wants to stick with a single-stream recycling process, it may cost close to $1 million to send these materials off for processing. This

would be a major difference compared to the small $180,000 in profit it made in annual revenue selling its recyclables to Brookhaven.

Bids received for dual-stream recycling, including both Winter Bros. and Trinity Transportation, propose rates the companies would be willing to pay for each specific product. For example, Trinity would pay the town $68 a ton for its newspaper and cardboard.

The town calculated it would collect approximately 6,500 tons of paper and 1,900 tons of metal, plastic and glass combined from residents if households were required to sort their own recycling.

Russell Barnett, the town’s recycling coordinator, said one of the options Smithtown is considering is taking glass off the list of curbside materials and setting up a specialized

Recycled glass is a major bane for Patricia DiMatteo, owner of Trinity Transportation.

She said that recyclable products can easily become contaminated, especially with glass, when collected in a single can. In particular paper, her company’s specialty, becomes easily contaminated by fine pieces of glass crushed so small they’re barely visible to the naked eye, making the product unsellable.

Wehrheim said he doesn’t expect residents to continue recycling at the rate they have under the single-stream process if the town reverts to dual stream.

“You’re going to be hard pressed after years of single stream to go back to dual stream — Ed and tell people, ‘Now, you’re going to have go back to the two pails, sort your metal and sort your paper,’” he said. “I think what you’ll see is you’ll lose a large percentage of your recycling.”

While Barnett agreed losing single-stream recycling could result in less participation, he added that changing back to dual stream could improve the overall quality of the product collected, raising its market desirability.

Smithtown began its single-stream process in 2014 when it signed a contract with Brookhaven and the Green Stream facility.

Previously, the town had used its own dualstream recycling processing facility. Barnett said the town is internally discussing bringing that facility back online, but that site was mothballed in 2014. Since then, the facility has aged without use and would require revitalization. In addition, all the town employees who once worked at the facility — 12 in total — have been reassigned to other departments or no longer work for the town.

To make the facility operational would require hiring multiple new employees, which means weighing the costs of salaries and benefits into the price of reopening, according to Wehrheim. Barnett said the town is still calculating the total cost of restarting the plant.

Recycling has been an Wehrheim ongoing issue for Long Island municipalities since the China market, one of the world’s largest importers of recyclables, severely restricted the quality of material it would import. This policy, named National Sword, started in January and its effects have stung local townships hard as of late, but DiMatteo said there are other markets if one knows where to look.

“There is definitely an issue with the China market, no doubt, you have to make a pristine product for them now,” she said. “There are other markets, and you can achieve a China market quality product if you process it well.”

Haller’s attorney, Michael Walker of the Mineola-based Gallagher, Walker, Bianco & Plastaras, did not return calls for comment. The law office will be receiving more than $500,000 of the settlement in exchange for the legal services they provided.

Smithtown officials had no comment regarding the accident or settlement due to a nondisclosure agreement, according to the town attorney’s office.

The town employee involved in the accident is still currently employed by the town as a heavy equipment operator, according to town spokeswoman Nicole Garguilo. Matt Gorecki, the town’s sanitation supervisor at the time of the 2014 accident, has since died. Garguilo said safety training courses and refreshers are regularly held for town employees.

The Town of Smithtown has agreed to a $1.8 million settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit involving a Kings Park resident.

Smithtown Town Board voted unanimously to agree to a $1.8 million settlement with Kings Park resident Patricia Haller, over the death of her husband, Joseph, following an accident on the grounds of the town’s Municipal Services Facility in 2014.

On Nov. 15, 2014, Joseph Haller was driving his 2004 Chevrolet along a roadway heading southwest inside the Smithtown landfill, located at 85 Old Northport Road, at approximately 1:23 p.m. Haller, 70, was pulling onto a side path when his vehicle collided with the bucket of a Komatsu payloader being operated by a town employee, according to a Suffolk County police officer’s accident report. The town employee told police he believed sun glare may have played a role in causing the accident.

Haller was rushed via ambulance to a nearby hospital, according to police, where he was diagnosed with traumatic brain injury, head trauma, facial injuries, severe lacerations and fractures. He later died as a result of the injuries in January 2015.

Patricia Haller filed a lawsuit in Suffolk County Supreme Court against the Town of Smithtown, Smithtown Sanitation Department and the town employee seeking $10 million for the wrongful death of her husband, including his pain and suffering.

Under the settlement agreement, the town will be responsible for paying out $1,377,352.13

Suffolk voters expect more political partisanship to come

Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) and state Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) keeping their seats, both the state Senate and U.S. House of Representatives flipped over to the Democratic Party after years of Republican majority control.

Despite these changes, many local residents said they expect to see more gridlock and political divisiveness for the next two years.

“I thought that it was the point of politicians to care about the people, but it’s not,” said Miller Place resident Rich Jiranek. “They have forgotten about ‘We the People,’ and now it’s all about themselves.”

Jiranek, a Republican, said he didn’t see his party accomplish much of anything in the 18 months they controlled both the U.S. Congress and the presidency. Now he said he sees the ongoing push for recounts in the Florida governor’s and senator’s races and Georgia governor’s race as just a prelude to more

Though not all is doom and gloom, according to Port Jefferson Station resident Tara Braaten. This midterm election saw some high turnout all across the country. The New York Times reported that, by current estimates, 113 million people came out to vote in these midterms, encompassing 48 percent of the eligible voter population. This is up from the 2014 midterm elections, which saw only 83 million votes cast.

“I just feel that raising awareness and people being more active and proactive participating is going to have more of a difference to whatever decision being made or outcome,” she said. “We have to have constant vigilance, and it’s still up to us, despite who’s sitting in the chair.”

Lady Kingsmen win Suffolk Class A title Kings Park varsity girls volleyball showed its dominance on the court defeating No. 2-ranked Westhampton, 3-1, Nov. 8 to bring home the Suffolk County Class A championship title.

The Lady Kingsmen finished their regular 2018 season with a 10-2 record, earning them the No. 5 seed as they entered the season playoff. Kings Park came in the underdog taking down Islip, before claiming victory over No.1-ranked East Hampton in the semifinals Nov. 5 in order to advance to the county finals.

Commack Cougars claim Suffolk’s Class AA title The Commack girls varsity volleyball team was proud to defend its title as Suffolk County’s Class AA champions Nov. 8. The Cougars tore apart Connetquot, 3-0, at county finals held at Suffolk County Community College’s Brentwood campus.

This is the second straight year that the Cougars have gone undefeated in Suffolk with an overall record of 13-0.

The Commack girls volleyball team competed against Long Beach vying for the Long Island Championship title Nov. 11 and came up short 2-3.

We as a country have experienced a tumultuous and polarizing last few weeks and months. The lead up to the first Tuesday in November and the midterm elections set the American electorate ablaze with strong opinions that saw former elected officials receive rudimentary pipe bombs via the mail.

With that as a backdrop, Veterans Day took place this past weekend, with beautiful, solemn remembrances unfolding at war memorials and firehouses, coupled with more raucous and celebratory parades happening across the North Shore and beyond. The events should have served as reminders that despite our differences, our shared values and appreciation for the sacrifices made by so many that allowed this country to flourish are what will be truly lasting in even the tensest of times.

While we were glad to see photos come through our inboxes and across our social media platforms of these events, we were saddened by an incident that occurred at Heritage Park in Mount Sinai relayed to us by Fred Drewes, a founding member of the Heritage Trust, the nonprofit which stewards the park in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven and Suffolk County.

Drewes has dedicated much of his own time to beautifying the park and perpetuating a triannual program called the Parade of Flags, which features the flying of about 100 flags representing American states and other important entities like the military branches lining an area of the park dubbed the Avenue of America. The park features other patriotic imagery including the Court of America, a sitting area with benches, plaques with quotes from presidents and other famous citizens and a rock garden in the shape of the continental United States.

The rock garden contains symbolic rocks, plants and flowers that are native to the corresponding region in which they lay.

Blocks featuring the names of all previous 44 U.S. presidents and the years they held office border the garden. President Donald Trump’s block will be added at the conclusion of his tenure, according to Drewes.

Drewes reported to us that during recent weeks someone tore out former President Barack Obama’s block and discarded it in a nearby shrub. We’re not asking anyone to agree with all — or even any — of the former president’s political ideologies or practices, except for one.

“The forces that divide us are not as strong as those that unite us,” Obama said in 2011 while speaking in Tucson, Arizona, after a gunman shot U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona).

On Veterans Day especially, but going forward, we’d like to see Americans make a better effort to live by that axiom.

Thank you, to 2nd Senate District voters Thank you to the residents of the 2nd Senate District for once again providing me with the opportunity to represent them in the New York State Senate. It has been my distinct honor to serve the community since 2002 and I am humbled to be able to return to the State Capitol to protect our way of life.

As I stated during the past months, regardless of any election outcome, the Senate Republican Conference will continue to be a strong and important voice in Albany. That includes standing up for hardworking taxpayers, advancing policies that help businesses create new jobs and

new opportunities, and working every day to keep our families secure and safe.

With the election behind us, now is the time for all of us in government to put politics aside to work for the betterment of all who live and work in New York state.

Keep a close eye on Zeldin this term On Nov. 6, Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin was re-elected to the House of Representatives by his smallest margin of victory since running for public office [52 percent to 46]. His campaign was one marked by xenophobia, homophobia and name calling of his Democratic opponent, Perry Gershon, and his supporters.

As a resident of the 1st Congressional District, it was painful to see signs with the words “Gay Lover” stenciled into stolen Gershon signs, as well as a swastika spray-painted onto a Gershon sign on Nicolls Road. As a parent, it became increasingly difficult to explain these acts of hate to my young children

as we witnessed them.

Unfortunately, with the re-election of Zeldin, we not only have a more divided district with hateful rhetoric a part of the discourse, we have a congressman who will not be able to deliver on important issues. He is now in the minority, something that he has never experienced in his time in public office. Zeldin has legislated as an extreme partisan and has not formed relationships across the aisle, which will make it difficult for him to secure funds for our district.

He no longer has the protection of a majority that will send appropriations his way, nor does he possess the people

skills to fight on our behalf.

While I respect the results of this election and Zeldin’s victory, I urge all NY1 constituents to keep a close eye on our congressman, and pay attention to his divisive rhetoric and inability to deliver on needs for our communities, and consider this when casting their ballots in 2020. We need a leader who is principled, capable of reaching across the aisle and unites rather than divides in his rhetoric.

Zeldin has fallen short on all of these qualities necessary for a leader.

Hoping we all find our joie de vivre

K

nowing exactly what we want and then getting it brings out the thrilled child in all of us.

I recently attended a wonderful party thrown by one of my wife’s friends. I’ve seen this gentleman for years in various settings that are a blend of personal and professional.

Each time, he seemed pleased with the fish he ordered for lunch, with the interactions at holiday parties or with the chance to disD. None cuss details of his of the above children’s lives.

BY DANIEL DUNAIEF At this party at his house, however, I saw a different side of him that I hope

resides in each of us. In his elegantly decorated and comfortable home, he welcomed us into a large kitchen. People stood around a table covered with various dishes, helping themselves to sliced steak, warm pretzels and a variety of appetizers.

While the food appeared pleasing to the guests’ palates, the bigger hit was the wide assortment of wines. With a stream of ordered and shiny glasses at the ready, each arriving guest had a chance to sample from a variety of wines, all gracefully arranged with the bottles of the neck facing outward, as if each container were a person reclining comfortably in a bath after a long day.

“This one came from a trip to California,” he said. “It’s my absolute favorite.” He proceeded to describe his experience at the vineyard and the interactions with its owners.

“After a sip, I told him I wanted his entire stock of this one,” he said, taking a small swallow, smiling and basking in the familiar flavor

that splashed across his receptive taste buds.

When told there were 12 bottles of that particular wine, he asked the owner to pack them all up and ship them to him. He was delighted to share what he described as an extraordinary taste of life with guests who became increasingly animated and comfortable with each other as the night wore on.

Once outside his house, he took us on a tour of some of the amenities he had taken considerable time to add to his house. For starters, he had two firepits on a 50-something degree evening, both of which offered welcome warmth against the breezes that seemed no match for the flames.

Around the side, he said he used to have a lawn. Once his children were old enough, he had no need for grass he would need to water and mow, and that young children didn’t occupy during evenings or weekends. He had recently installed a putting green for his wife’s birthday. That, however, was just the beginning of the story, as he had the green designed and

installed to match the contours, speed and play of the nearest golf course.

First, he said, the installers put down a base.

Once they did that, they added sand that they carefully contoured. That process took a solid two days, as a worker walked back and forth across the relatively small space, making sure of exactly the right concentration and height to match the specification.

Once the sand was down, other workers meticulously shaped it. Then they put the carpet down. A professional golfer designed the holes.

He assured us that the entire process has paid off, as he and his wife have loved the chance to hone their putting in the backyard, especially shaving several strokes off the weakest part of his wife’s game.

As we prepared to leave the home after a pleasant evening, it was clear that our host has learned to drink deeply of the pleasures life affords him. Hopefully, we can all bring something that provides such satisfaction into our lives.

The dead do have good tales to tell

C

all me ghoulish, but I like to read obituaries. Of course they have to be well-written obits, like the ones in The New York Times. I almost never know the people who have died. If I’ve heard of them, their stories are usually on the front page. These obits that I refer to are usually found in the back pages.

The dead are famous enough to warrant a significant write-up, and I always like to hear tales of people’s lives. That’s one reason I find them interesting.

Between Another, perhaps you and me more important atBY LEAH S. DUNAIEF traction for me, is the random information to be gleaned on diverse subjects.

Let me give you some recent examples.

On an entirely random day, Thursday, Oct. 25, I read about Wanda Ferragamo, clever wife

of the famous shoemaker, Salvatore Ferragamo, who had built a shoe shop in Florence, Italy, into a shoe design and manufacturing concern. Upon his death in 1960 — he was 24 years older than his wife — Wanda, who had never worked in her life until then, built the company into an international powerhouse with annual revenues most recently of more than $1 billion. Now I happen to like Ferragamo shoes, although I mostly don’t buy them. But the obit was something of a business case study for me, as well as the story of a remarkable woman who had just died at her hilltop villa in Fiesole, a beautiful village above Florence, at age 96.

Then there was Osamu Shimomura, who died in Nagasaki, Japan, at age 90. He shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 for finding a glowing jellyfish protein that is now a major element of biological research. Shimomura, working in Washington state for a Princeton marine biologist in 1961, scooped up thousands of jellyfish from Puget Sound in an attempt to discover how they glowed green when agitated.

They were able to extract a luminescent material, a protein, which they named aequorin. He also found trace amounts of another protein, green

Ultimately the GFP gene was stitched into the DNA of other organisms, enabling researchers to track those organisms the way naturalists can track tagged cougars in the wild. This revolutionized contemporary biological discovery. Of great further interest, he lived with grandparents near Nagasaki and saw the American B-29 airplane that dropped its devastating atomic bomb on the city. He described what he saw in graphic detail in his Nobel autobiography.

Dorcas Reilly, who died in Camden, New Jersey, at age 92, might particularly be remembered at the Thanksgiving table. It was she who invented the classic American dish of green bean casserole when she worked in the Campbell Soup Company test kitchen. Containing a mere six ingredients, the recipe was printed on the label of Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup and called for cooked green beans, a little milk, soy sauce, pepper and some crunchy fried onions on top.

Reilly helped create simple recipes to promote the sale of company products. Originally called the Green Bean Bake in 1955, Campbell’s estimates some 20 million American homes will
