The town supervisor’s spokesperson Nicole Garguilo has said that the project is totally private and has received no government subsidies.

Over the last 12 years, the project has been entrenched in controversy. After the East Hampton-based developer bought the site in 2008, it violated a Smithtown stop work order and in 2009 illegally demolished the building. Developers have broken ground across from Smithtown Town Hall at the former site of Nassau Suffolk Lumber and Supply Corp., where a new three-story, 71-unit apartment complex with 15,000 square feet of new retail space will be constructed over the next year and a half.

The private project, called The Lofts at Maple and Main, sits one block from the Smithtown commuter train platform and is one of the first transit-oriented developments in the town. The concept expects to offer affordable places to live along the NYC commuter lines to help retain and attract young people, which will also help grow the economy. The units, also an option for empty nesters looking to downsize, are modeled after similar downtown rental projects constructed in Patchogue and Port Jefferson.

It’s expected to generate $250,000 in tax revenue and result in 50 new jobs.

“This is what we need to be doing all over Long Island,” said County Executive Steve Bellone (D).

State Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick (R-Smithtown) called the project Smithtown 2.0. He explained that first shopping malls and now online retailers have drawn people away from downtown areas. The apartments, situated on 3.6 acres, are expected to help eliminate the blight to create a more vibrant downtown area.

Revitalization projects generally await the approval and state funding for new sewers. But the apartments have interim plans for handling wastewater. The town expects public sewer construction to follow the timeline of the Kings Park project, which will likely start in April 2021 with completion in Oct. 2023.

the subject of a 2011 Suffolk County Grand Jury investigation alleging that an unnamed town official recommended demolishment to save taxes. Ultimately, no charges were filed, but board members voted in July 2014 to tear down the already demolished structure and adjacent buildings and approved the site plans for The Lofts at Maple and Main at its August 2018 meeting.

Smithtown’s planning department reports that the project has a site-workonly permit and still lacks a building permit.

Anthony and his brother Jared DiCarlo said that the one-bedroom units will rent for under $2,000 a month and the two-bedroom units will likely cost under $3,000. The 80-minute commute to Manhattan and the projects proximity to I-495, Route 347 and the Smith Haven mall, they predict, will be appealing. The retail space is expected to cost about $25 per square feet. Details, though, are still preliminary.

County Sets Timeline for Kings Park Sewers: 2023 Completion Suffolk County Deputy County Executive Peter Scully, the county’s water czar, reveals a timeline for the Kings Park Sewer Project.

The project’s design is underway and agency approval is expected to be complete by the end of November.

Public hearings are likely to be scheduled in February and March of 2020.

Legislative approvals are predicted to occur in May 2020. A special election is tentatively scheduled for September 2020. After the election, the application will be submitted to the state comptroller, likely by October 2020.

Under this time frame, construction will start in April 2021 with completion expected by the end of October 2023.

Suffolk Conducts First Public Budget Meeting for 2019-20

County residents got a glimpse of the county’s budget process as the operating budget working group held its first public meeting Oct. 17 when the 2019-20 recommended operating budget was discussed.

The county operating budget funds employee payroll costs, county departments and a variety of other expenditures. The status of the budget has been in the spotlight since the New York State comptroller, Tom DiNapoli (D), said Suffolk was under “significant fiscal stress” — with Nassau — for the second year in a row. In 2018, Suffolk had an operating deficit of about $26.5 million and a general fund balance deficit of $285 million.

The topic has been an important issue in the county executive race. The current incumbent, Steve Bellone (D), has stated that during his tenure he has worked to bring the county spending and finances back in check.

John Kennedy Jr., the county comptroller and Republican challenger for executive, has stated that the county is in a “fiscal crisis.”

Oct. 17. Williams was charged with robbery first degree and grand larceny third degree.

He was held at the 4th Precinct and was arraignment at 1st District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 19. Bail was set at $250,000 cash or $500,000 bond. He is being represented by the Legal Aid Society. The Legal Aid Society could offer no comments on the case.

A woman attempted to use credit and debit cards on Sept. 11 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union, located at 94 Harned Road in Commack, that had been reported stolen earlier in the day from a car parked at Walt Whitman High School, located at 301 W. Hills Road in Huntington Station.

St. James Episcopal Church Welcomes New Rector The wardens and vestry are delighted to announce that the Rev. Ian C. Wetmore has accepted their call to be the next rector of St. James Episcopal Church, St. James. He will begin on Nov. 1, All Saints Day, with a service of Morning Prayer at 8:30 a.m.

Wetmore most recently served as vicar of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, O’Fallon, Illinois.

After his ordination in 1997, he served as rector in two parishes in New Brunswick, Canada, before moving to St. Michael’s in 2012. He and his wife Cathy have a grown daughter, Sarah, and a wheaten terrier named Millie.

The Church Search Committee with input from the parish identified the following attributes in identifying persons best suited for con-

sideration as rector: thoughtful and engaging sermons, an ability to relate well to people of all ages, a strength and interest in pastoral care and an ability to lead the church toward growth and greater community outreach. The committee found Wetmore to have these qualities. He is described as “warm, full of the Spirit, personable, solid, faithful and loving.”

St. James Episcopal Church was founded in 1853 and its cemetery established in 1855. The hamlet of St. James was named after the church, according to local lore. Sunday services include Holy Eucharist at 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. with coffee hour following in the newly renovated Mills Hall. Children are invited to attend Godly Play after Communion at the 9:30 a.m. service.

Spirits Dampened as Smithtown East Fails to Tie Game

BY BILL LANDON Defense was the story of the game when Centereach senior Matt Robbert broke the ice as he punched in on short yardage for the touchdown midway through the second quarter. Robbert then kicked an extra point to make it 7-0. Smithtown East struggled offensively until junior running-back Tyler Pohlman punched in on a short run for the Bulls with under two minutes left. Needing the extra point to tie the game, the kick was partially blocked and the Cougars held on for a 7-6 win, dampening the Bulls homecoming celebration Oct. 19.

Eric Harrington got the call time and time again grinding out 107 yards on 20 carries for the Cougars while Robbert gained 55 yards in 10 attempts. The win lifts Centereach to 3-3 who hit the road against Connetquot before returning home to face Hills East. Smithtown East slips to 2-4 and must win out, against Hills East and Northport for any hopes of postseason play.

Call for Bipartisanship Suffolk’s Fiscal Stress Mess The House representative for New York’s 1st Congressional District, a Republican, has come out against the U.S. president on foreign policy. We here at TBR News Media think it’s time for more of us to look at such national decisions in a bipartisan way.

On Oct. 13, President Donald Trump (R) stunned the world and ordered the abrupt removal of American troops out of Kurdish territory in Northern Syria along the Turkish border. The unusual policy shift has been characterized by foreign policy experts and representatives from both the Republican and Democratic parties as a gravely flawed decision that harms U.S. national security interests.

Trump’s military decision should mark a turning point. The issues of today should no longer pivot on party affiliation. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, the matter affects the whole of the U.S. national security and the whole fabric of America.

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R) represents Suffolk County residents in New York’s 1st Congressional District. He sits on the House Foreign Affairs and Financial Services committees.

We’ve asked him to tell us when he learned about Trump’s decision to remove troops from the Turkish border, a question he did not answer. However, he did provide his insights into the situation.

“The Kurds have fought, bled and died fighting alongside the U.S.,” Zeldin said. “They have been warriors and brothers in battle along the way The president is right to want to end endless war, but the Turks wiping out the Kurds will absolutely not be an acceptable outcome after all of that.”

Instead of responding to questions, Zeldin’s office wanted us to know that the congressman, who has tended to support the president, signed a joint piece of legislation that flatly denounces Trump’s decision, namely H.J. Res. 77 (116th Congress).

The resolution stated, inter alia: “An abrupt withdrawal of United States military personnel from certain parts of Northeast Syria is beneficial to adversaries of the United States government, including Syria, Iran and Russia.”

The damage is done, and both experts and federal representatives said the U.S. strategic presence in the region has been severely neutered. Russian President Vladamir Putin’s troops now occupy the region. Jihadists have broken from prisons, reversing many of the West’s original hard-fought gains against ISIS and terrorism.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman called the situation “just devastating.”

These are elected officials we are talking about. If a local official, such in the case of former Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, or former Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke, abused the power of their office, then one should want them investigated.

That should be no different for a sitting president, Republican or Democrat. No elected official is “your guy.” Even if you vote for a person, you should never blindly accept every decision they make.

As the impeachment proceedings move forward and as more details are made public, scrutinize the behavior, comments and motives of the president with keen concern. Distinguish between propaganda and truth.

It’s time to join hands and unite with your neighbors or your relatives, whatever party they belong to.

It’s very surprising that an extremely troubling report from New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli regarding Suffolk County’s frightening fiscal state, released at the beginning of this month, has gotten scant local attention.

A headline announcing we’ve been designated the “most fiscally stressed county in the state,” two years running might have gotten residents’ attention.

They may have been tempted to ask how Suffolk is in “significant fiscal stress” when they’ve been paying so

much of their hard-earned money in taxes and fees? DiNapoli flunked us after studying our year-end-balance, cash on hand, short-term borrowing, fixed costs, patterns of operating deficits and factors such as poverty and unemployment.

We’ve also been hit with seven bond downgrades in the last seven years.

Think of that as having dramatically supplemented a big spender’s income, only to learn their FICO score went from a 750 to below 500.

What’s crucial to note, given the

current partisan political climate, Democrat DiNapoli’s straight-forward, by-the-numbers exposure of Suffolk County’s money woes was not influenced by his party affiliation. DiNapoli gave an honest accounting of a county governed by a majority of Democratic legislators, led by Democrat Steve Bellone, and let the chips fall where they may.

A word of “thanks” to Comptroller DiNapoli.

Artificial Intelligence in Schools Our educational system is deeply rooted in a model that straddled the agricultural and industrial ages. It was a time when only some kids attended school, and fewer went beyond the eighth grade. Jobs were plentiful and most didn’t require academic skills.

Teachers were primarily single women who taught morals and trained kids to memorize facts. Schools closed between the sowing and harvesting seasons. It worked just fine.

As more families left farms for factories, fathers took on city jobs and could no longer apprentice their sons in manual and agricultural skills. There was a diminishing need to. Compulsory education laws were enacted, and children started attending schools in greater numbers and for longer stints.

After World War II, blacks migrated to Northern cities, as whites fled to the suburbs and passed budgets for sprawling schools.

The faculties of college-educated women — and increasing numbers of men — unionized.

The educators were primarily those who succeeded in and liked school as they experienced it, so, they sought to maintain, not revolutionize it. Parents, too, had expectations based on the model of their

own school experience.

Modest adjustments — like new math and whole language — were ridiculed.

The school culture was static and resistant to change even as society was undergoing broad upheavals.

Mothers started working, and parenting was outsourced to day care centers. Latch-key kids rode yellow buses to empty houses. Race, poverty, immigration, dysfunction, politics and divorce all entered the schoolhouse.

Knowledge proceeded to double by the decade, as workers saw the lifelong career platform fade into a new employment world of musical chairs … chairs occupied by an increasing number of efficient robots.

The curriculum expanded slightly, but survived largely intact. A classroom would be comfortably familiar to a person who hadn’t entered one in 50 years.

Our world was going digital but our thinking clung to analog. The mixed blessing of technology, and the scourges of drugs and terror entered the schoolhouse.

Even as we employ computers, smartboards and iPads, we clutch onto much of the yellowing curriculum and methods as if they were the owner’s

manual to success.

They’re not.

Studies repeatedly encourage a change in the school day and calendar, but entrenchments and stasis won’t hear of it.

Our template is more past than future.

Global comparisons scare us into action. The committee organized by the Council on Foreign Relations concluded that 30 percent of high school graduates do not do well enough on an aptitude test to serve in the military.

We sense that something is wrong, but, rather than considering an educational revolution, we prescribe a program of evaluating teachers — a bureaucratic alchemy contest in search of educational gold. Regretfully, a reasonable definition of schooling has become the study of things that help one get through school — and not life.

We have spell-check but we need think-check.

As schools vigorously teach to the test, they should be teaching to the future.

Caring for America’s Heroes

Exempting the state veterans nursing homes from budget cuts would be a meaningful way for New Yorkers to say ‘thank you for your service.’

When the LISVH first opened, he again served his fellow veterans for many years as a volunteer. He visited the nursing home almost every day because it was his way of supporting his “band of brothers and sisters.”

When my Dad fractured his hip at age 83, many doctors at the hospital thought he would never walk again.

It took a year of rehabilitation with the skilled and compassionate staff at the veterans home, but my Dad walked out of the nursing home and

spent the last year of his life with my mother in their own home.

In the 74 years since the end of World War II, military men and women have been on the front line of battles in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and many other locations around the world. Sadly, the physical, emotional and psychological wounds never heal for many of the warriors who fulfill their oath to protect America. I learned that firsthand more than 20 years ago when my father had emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix.

I visited him the morning after his operation.

He was laying his bed shivering and shaking uncontrollably. He whispered he had the worst nightmare ever. He was back in a foxhole in the Philippines, guns were blasting and bombs were dropping all around him. Then he looked at his fellow combat veteran in the bed next to him and said, “Sal got me through it. Thank God he was here for me.”

Today we might say that my father had post-traumatic stress disorder or a flashback.

But whatever you call it, his fellow veteran pulled him through just like the veterans do for

ew York State government should not cut funding for America’s heroes residing at the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University. The veterans home has, and does, provide first-class health services for veterans and their spouses who receive rehabilitation and long-term care in their time of need.

Providing topnotch nursing home care for our veterans, many of whom put their own lives on the line to keep us safe, is a patriotic action that truly expresses “thank you for your service.”

At the age of 17 my father, Hugh “Joe” Cassidy, enlisted in the United States Coast Guard to serve his country during World War II. Before he reached his 19th birthday he participated in five shore invasions with the Marines and Army as frogman.

He was frequently shot at while he stood on coral reefs in the Philippine Islands acting as a human buoy to help keep the landing boats from crashing into reefs and sinking. He was almost thrown overboard when his ship, the

USS Cavalier, was torpedoed in the still of a Pacific Ocean night. But my Dad always said he was not a hero. His heroes were all the soldiers and sailors who put their lives in harm’s way, were wounded or died in battle.

New York State is facing a budget crunch, that much is true. But exempting the state veterans’ nursing homes from the budget cuts would be a meaningful way for New Yorkers to say “thank you for your service.”

A Review of the Yankee Lessons from the ALCS

ooking back at the six-game American League Championship Series, it’s clear that the Houston Astros were the better team. Tough as it is to write that when my fan allegiance is with the Yankees, the Astros had more clutch hitting, better defense, and better starting and relief pitching.

While hindsight is always perfect, because we know who failed and who succeeded, I want to ask an obvious question. Why was our designated hitter doing little more than striking out? It’s clear that our enigmatic catcher Gary Sánchez, who has a talent for crushing balls deep into the night, seems to disappear at big moments.

And, while we’re playing the hindsight game, it seems obvious that closer Aroldis Chapman, who has lost a few miles per hour on his fastball and now relies on an effective slider, should have avoided pitching to José Altuve with two outs, a runner on first and a defensive replacement on deck for Houston.

So, one at a time. Edwin Encarnación was a compelling pickup from Seattle Mariners during the season, offering a few moments of ball-bashing power. Perhaps because of injury, or maybe because he was trying to hit a defining titanic home run, he couldn’t do much of anything in the postseason. The same seems true for the multimillion dollar Giancarlo Stanton.

If manager Aaron Boone had inserted him into the lineup, would he have taken away the possibility of using Maybin as a late-inning defensive replacement? That’s possible. OK, then, how about using Austin Romine as the designated hitter? Yes, I understand that Boone might also have been saving him to give Sánchez a break in a game where defense takes precedence.

If either of them had become an unconventional designated hitter, would fans be screaming about the panic move if they had failed? Yes, of course, they would. But at least Boone would have been trying something — anything — when he seemed wedded to a script that wasn’t working in a short series.

The same thing holds true for Adam Ottavino.

The guy was a great pitcher during the season, but he ran into the postseason twilight zone. It happens. Sit him down and don’t let him affect the outcome of games.

As for Sánchez, he may have hit batting practice pitches into the next county, but that’s irrelevant. He wasn’t getting it done at or behind the plate. Maybe even a single day off would have changed his approach and would have helped. In a short series, managers can’t wait to see if something that’s not working turns around. The team — and its desperate fans — don’t have the luxury of that kind of time.

The question for next year isn’t whether the Yankees will get a starting pitcher who can throw more innings than the present incumbents, or whether Stanton will make a meaningful postseason contribution. The question is: Will Boone buy into the idea of a team game and give other players a chance? After all, the last time the Yankees won the World Series was a decade ago, in 2009.
