The Smithtown Library is asking its youth patrons to join them for The Great Give Back, a community service initiative whose aim is to provide a day of meaningful serviceoriented experiences throughout October, in partnership with the Suffolk County Public Library Directors Association and Suffolk Cooperative Library System.

Vecchio’s proposed 2018 budget cuts taxes for residents Smithtown homeowners may find themselves in an enviable position as Supervisor Pat Vecchio (R) looks to cut taxes for the second straight year.

Vecchio presented his $105 million 2018 proposed Smithtown Town budget at a brief 46-second special town board meeting Oct. 3.

There was no public discussion of the budget, as town board members were seeing the nearly 200-page document for the first time.

“Ostensibly, the proposed budget is now theirs; the [town board] can change it or do anything with it they would like,” Vecchio said. “My experience is that they’ve never changed it.”

Overall, the proposed budget contains an increase of $2 million over the 2017 budget, but will reduce the town taxes for the average homeowner by $1.05, down from $1,269.88 per year to $1,268.83 per year for a home with an as-

sessed value of $5,500. It falls well under the state tax cap of 1.84 percent.

Vecchio said he prepared a structurally balanced budget in which incoming revenues match the recurring expenditures, a measure he achieved by implementing cost cutting initiatives and long-range planning.

First and foremost, the supervisor pointed to careful control of town employees’ salaries.

“We have not replaced employees who have retired,” the supervisor said. “When we do rehire employees, we rehire them at a lower salary.”

While positions have been lost through attrition, the 2018 budget does not call for the layoff of any existing town personnel.

Smithtown town officials also gradually implemented a new policy of leasing vehicles used by vari— Pat Vecchio ous departments, such as parks and highways, instead of outright purchasing them.

“It’s saved us a lot of money,” Vecchio said. “There’s a big outlay when purchasing a vehicle for a municipality, plus then

there’s maintenance.”

Other cost-saving measures taken by the town include replacing streetlights with LED lights and sharing services for emergency dispatching, according to the supervisor.

The proposed budget has set aside $4.4 million for the 2018 road program, which in addition to $1.1 million in state funding, will allow for road improvements and repaving over the upcoming year.

Vecchio said the town is in a good fiscal position with a Triple A bond rating and a $17 million surplus in its general fund.

“What’s the benefit, residents might ask, of having a $17 million surplus?” he said. “The benefit of having that money in surplus is your bond rating. Your interest rates on bonds are always lower when you have reserves.”

The supervisor has proposed allocating $600,000 of the town’s surplus funds towards the highway budget to supplement continued roadway improvements.

A similar measure was approved in the 2017 budget which appropriated $602,000 for roadways and later approved $2 million specifically for improvements to Lake Avenue in Smithtown.

A public hearing on the 2018 proposed budget will be held at the town board meeting on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. Residents can review a line-by-line budget breakdown on the town’s website at www.smithtownny.gov.

TOWN Breast cancer ‘thriver’ opens wig salon to beautify others A Hauppauge breast cancer survivor is hoping to turn her experience into a new business to help others feel good about themselves.

Barbara Vivolo opened Barbara’s Hair Studio in September, a custom wig salon with the aim to help women diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses resulting in hair loss. The shop, opening days before October, which marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is fortuitous for Vivolo — who prefers to call herself a “thriver” rather than a survivor.

“I asked myself how can I make them go from survivors to thrivers?” Vivolo said.

“To become thrivers we have to move forward together.”

Vivolo is a trained cosmetologist with more than 30 years experience, whose life dramatically changed when her mother and aunt were both diagnosed with breast cancer within the same week.

“My aunt was a hairdresser too, and she was always my inspiration to become a hairdresser when I was young,” Vivolo said. “We worked together for years.”

Her aunt, Phyllis Borek, lost her hair while undergoing chemotherapy treatments, which led Vivolo to her first time visiting a wig salon on the hunt for the perfect do.

“My aunt was funny with her wigs and we had a good time,” she said. “She was all, ‘Oh, now I can be the perfect redhead or I can be the perfect blond.’ One week it was short, then long. She really rocked it.”

Vivolo also started picking out wigs to ship to her mother in Florida, who continued working through her cancer treatments, often first painstakingly custom cutting and coloring the wigs.

Vivolo was shocked upon being diagnosed with ER-positive ductal carcinoma, breast cancer whose growth is affected by the hormone estrogen, at age 40. With three young children, she made the difficult choice to undergo a double mastectomy with reconstructive surgery.

While undergoing her procedures, the hairdresser said she found it difficult to relax and heal without planning for the future and began writing in a composition notebook

simply labeled “wig salon.”

“My husband would watch me write in this book every day, thinking about opening up a wig salon,” Vivolo said.

One composition notebook full of dreams and business ideas was quickly filled, then another, as Vivolo was more focused on raising her family.

In March 2016, Vivolo made the decision she would move forward. She wanted to offer cancer patients and women affected by hair loss a personal one-on-one experience where they could feel safe and supported during the process of selecting their first wig.

“It’s a awful lot to swallow,” she said.

Vivolo said she experienced “divine intervention” when attending a breast cancer event last October.

“I prayed to my mother and my aunt that if I was going to open this salon, a wig salon to help women with cancer, I needed to win this money,” she said. “When I found out I did, I sat there and cried.”

The hairdresser had won approximately $1,000 in a 50/50 raffle, which she then used to pay for her first shipment of wigs.

Now, she’s got a private one-chair hair studio where clients, one at a time, can come in and go through the process of being shaved, selecting their wig and have it custom colored and cut. The wigs range in price from $200 to more than $1,000, synthetic to made with human hair. While going through the process, Vivolo said she

often answers questions about her personal experience and offers support as a certified health and life coach.

“They can see my end results, while they are in the beginning phases [of treatment],” Vivolo said. “I say to them, ‘Let me hold your hand and walk through this with you.’”

Vote upcoming on $14.6M Smithtown Library budget

By Sara-Megan WalSh sara@tbrnewspapers.com In a technological era where some argue books are obsolete, The Smithtown Library is asking taxpayers for funding to expand its hours to meet patrons’ demands.

The Smithtown Library will hold a vote on its $14.6 million proposed 2018 budget Oct. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The proposed budget represents an overall $300,000 budget increase from 2017.

Robert Lusak, director of The Smithtown Library, said the proposed budget takes aim to increase the number of hours at its four branches, increase programming and maintain and improve its current facilities.

More than $10.7 million of the library’s annual budget is set aside to cover employees’ salaries and benefits with the proposed budget containing a $150,000 increase over 2017.

“We are the largest library on Long Island,” Lusak said. “With four buildings, we will have the largest staff. When you have an operating budget in a service-driven industry, the bulk of your budget is salaries.”

The library district does have a policy of replacing retiring employees, or those leaving, with entry-level workers in efforts to reduce the impact on payroll, according to library treasurer Joanne Grove.

More staffing will be required next year if a new pilot program offering extended

hours on Friday nights continues to be successful, according to Lusak. Since Labor Day, the Smithtown Branch has stayed open an additional three hours on Fridays, pushing back its closing time from 6 to 9 p.m.

“Each week we’ve stayed open beyond 6 p.m. on a Friday night, the number of visitors keeps climbing because of word-of-mouth and publicizing it on social media,” the director said.

Based on patrons’ response, Lusak and Grove said they are currently leaning toward making a recommendation to library board trustees that all the other three branches — Commack, Kings Park and Nesconset — should stay open Friday nights starting in 2018.

This year, the library pushed its opening time to 9:30 a.m., previously doors unlocked at 10 a.m, to allow visitors to come by earlier.

The proposed budget includes an additional $68,000 funding increase, for a total of $344,000, toward equipment and capital outlays. The funds will go toward ensuring updated computers and equipment is available at the library, according to Grove.

“Our [computer] terminals are always full with patrons,” Grove said. “We also have 3D printers in each of our library buildings, which has generated a lot of interest from the public.”

To better serve guests, Lusak said the 2018 budget also includes funds to upgrade lighting and improve parking at the library’s

four branches. The district also hopes to obtain a new generator as part of its emergency response plan.

If approved, the proposed 2018 budget would result in a $6.40 increase, or $313.47 per year, for the homeowner with an assessed property value of $5,500. Residents looking to calculate library taxes on their home should divide their assessed value by $1,000, take the resulting number and multiply it by 56.994. On the ballot, residents can choose from four candidates running for three seats on the library’s board of trustees.

Cops: Commack man ran car scam Suffolk County police have arrested a Commack man for multiple charges relating to a scam during which he took money from victims with the false promise of delivering vehicles.

Between December 2016 and September 2017, Emmanuel Amaral advertised cars for sale on Craigslist. Numerous victims paid him anywhere between $3,000 and $24,000 for a vehicle and waited several months for delivery, which never occurred. In one case, Amaral scammed a victim he met while in line at a bagel shop, and in another instance, defrauded a victim he met at an elementary school event.

Amaral defrauded victims out of a total of approximately $73,000.

After an investigation by detectives from the Suffolk County police property/ auto crime unit, Amaral was arrested in front of his residence Sept. 27.

Amaral, 48, was charged with seven counts of third-degree grand larceny and first-degree scheming to defraud.

Detectives are asking anyone who feels they may have been victimized by Amaral, who also uses the aliases Manny Balboa and Manny Amaral, to contact the Suffolk County police property/auto crime unit at 631-853-7114.

Amaral was scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip and the investigation is ongoing.

Commack dog scares burglar Suffolk County Police 4th Squad detectives are investigating a burglary at an occupied Commack home that occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 3 Two men entered a home on Orchard Lane at 2:12 a.m. and demanded money from the residents. One of the burglars struck a 27-year-old woman in the head with a gun and then struggled with the woman’s 54-year-old father. During the

struggle between the two men, the homeowner’s Rottweiler ran into the room and the burglars fled with no proceeds.

The woman refused medical attention and the man was not injured.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the 4th Squad at 631-854-8452 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-8477(TIPS).

An out-of-control driver was killed Oct. 1 after crashing into a Spanish restaurant in Smithtown this past weekend.

Suffolk County Police said a man was driving a 2004 Nissan Quest eastbound on West Jericho Turnpike near Cornell Drive when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a 2011 Ford pickup truck, then plowed into Casa Luis. The vehicle flipped and caught fire just after midnight.

Commack Fire Department responded to both a 911 call of a motor vehicle accident and an automatic fire alarm coming from Casa Luis at 12:35 a.m., department spokesman Steve Silverman said. Upon arriving, firefighters found an overturned minivan engulfed in flames. The fire extended into the restaurant, which had an active natural gas leak, according to Silverman.

It took approximately one hour for 75 volunteer firefighters using eight trucks to bring the flames under control. Dix Hills, East Northport, Greenlawn, Kings Park and Smithtown fire departments with Commack Ambulance Corps and Suffolk Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services coordinators also assisted at the fire.

Police said the man, who was alone in his vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identification will be determined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, according to police.

The owner of Casa Luis and his wife, who live in an apartment above the restaurant, were able to escape unharmed, according to Silverman. They could not be reached for comment.

Suffolk County Police are investigating the accident. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the 4th Squad at 631-854-8452.

Although highly valued for beauty and grace, Suffolk County’s white-tailed deer population exceeds socially and ecologically desirable levels, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

As a result of hunting restrictions, suburban sprawl and the elimination of primary predators (wolves and mountain lions), overpopulation in rural areas caused outstripping of the forest’s natural food supplies. This led to reliance on abundant food supplies in suburban areas. In Suffolk County, motor vehicles are their primary predators. Recognized suburban concerns include an increased incidence of tick-borne Lyme disease, the fear of vehicular accidents and destruction of landscape and agricultural plantings. No less important, however, are the ecological effects of outstripped indigenous plants.

This results in the loss of habitat for migrating birds and other wildlife and the possibility of soil erosion on cliffs and hillsides.

The profound reduction in plant diversity may never recover, even after removing deer entirely. The high density of deer population also harms the deer by increasing competition for food and the transmission of diseases and parasites.

Other factors contributing to overpopulation include: • Inapplicability of traditional hunting methods in suburban areas • Difficulties controlling the deer population at a realistic target level • Absence of an urgency for changes in local laws permitting deer reduction • Need for hunters to use liberalized reduction rules to help control local herds • Insufficient resident awareness of the significance and implications of overpopulation The Borrelia burgdorfori bacterium causes Lyme disease when passed to humans by a deer tick. It is transmitted to ticks from deer blood, their primary food source. Within 30 days of human bacterial inoculation, fever, headaches, tiredness and possible complications like arthritis, nerve paralysis and meningitis occur. Lyme was reported in 5,533 cases in Suffolk County from 2000 to 2015, but the true number is thought to be 55,330. Deer reduction can reduce infection by decreasing the number of infected ticks. Although rodents also carry Borrelia, they are not the tick’s primary source of blood and they do not retain the infection through the winter.

Female deer go into heat every 28 days between October and February and give birth to one to three fawns in the spring.

This produces a doubling of the population every two years.

Suffolk’s regular deer hunting season opens the first Sunday in January and closes Jan. 31. Landowners, municipalities and hunters can request permits for taking an increased number of antlerless deer in season (Deer Management Assistance Program) or hunting deer outside the regular season (Bonus Deer Damage Permit). Reduction can also be accomplished by capturing deer with drop nets, clover traps or tranquilizer darts for buck neutering or doe immunocontraceptive vaccinations.

On Staten Island, there is a DEC-approved program of buck capturing on designated public or private lands. They are brought to a park facility for a 15-minute vasectomy procedure and the application of an identifying ear tag. In Hastings on Hudson, the Humane Society and Tufts Veterinary School are participating in a reduction program using the PZP-22 (porcine zona pellucida) immunocontraceptive vaccine. High school students participate by obtaining landowners’ permission for property access around feeders and high-priority darting areas. During specified field seasons, the involved properties are marked with identifying flags, and villagers have a hotline for reporting deer sightings directly to the field team. In the first year, the team immobilizes the doe with a tranquilizer dart to insert a time-released vaccine and apply an ear tag. In March of the subsequent year, a dart is used to inject a long-lasting booster immunization without the need for tranquilization.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that communities must consider deer reduction for addressing the adverse health and ecosystem consequences of deer overpopulation.

Five seniors from Smithtown High Schools East and West were among 16,000 students across the country who were named semifinalists in the 63nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Zhang – have been recognized as National Merit Scholar semifinalists. Smithtown High School West senior Connor O’Malley was also named a semifinalist.

To be considered for a merit scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. National Merit final-

ists will be announced in February.

These high school seniors will move on through the competition to potentially earn 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $32 million, to be handed out this spring.

“I’m a wine aficionado and love visiting the vineyards, but they require travel,” Wohl said. “Long Island has some amazing wines, but not many people know it.”

Her wine list includes Bedell Cellars as well as boutique bottles made by Anthony Nappa, who also works for Raphael in Peconic. Local beers available on tap include brews from Great South Bay Brewery, Greenpoint Beer and Ale, and Sand City Brewing.

“My goal is to open up multiple stores and

Owl Hill estate hits market for first time in 60 years

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Standing for decades as the hamlet’s bestkept secret, an old, secluded manor nestled within a sprawling stretch of property in Fort Salonga has come out of hiding — with a price tag of $6.45 million.

The Owl Hill estate, located at 99 Sunken Meadow Road, spans 27.63 acres and is the largest parcel of 1-acre residential-zoned land in Suffolk County. It is up for sale for the first time in more than six decades. It’s now the most expensive property in Fort Salonga.

The 6,500-square-foot home, whose construction began in 1897 and doors opened in 1903, sits surrounded by a serene haven of wooded forest and towering oak trees. The house has been occupied, and maintained, by the same Manhattan-based family for more than half a century as a summer and weekend residence. Maya Ryan, the current owner, who was unable to be reached for comment, recently decided it was time to pass the property onto another family or developer — according to Owl Hill’s listing agent Kelley Taylor, of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Taylor said she’s lived around the corner from the property for more than 20 years and never heard of it until recently.

The palatial estate, which the listing agent compared to Theodore Roosevelt’s Sagamore Hill home in Oyster Bay, is only 50 miles from New York City and contains more than 20 acres of completely untouched land. There hasn’t been a single renovation

to the property since the 1940s when its occupants expanded the kitchen.

The interior of the home speaks to the architectural elegance of a bygone era with original tiger oak and mahogany hardwood floors.

There are five en suite master bedrooms and three staff bedrooms, with a soaring fireplace in each, as well as an expansive music/living room, a wood-paneled dining room and

a massive basement. Outside, there’s a wraparound porch and a two-car garage, all within what Taylor calls a magical forest.

As for potential buyers, she said she’s seen a majority of interest from developers, including one evaluating the property as the site of a 55 and better community. But, she said, the owner has preserved 3.75 acres of the property under New York State’s Transfer of Development Rights.

“A big family would certainly love the generousness of the estate, as would anyone who appreciates the particular beauties of wellmade historic homes,” Dawn Watson, public relations manager at Douglas Elliman Real Estate, said. “It’s quite extraordinary and the parklike property is expansive and lush.”

In March, the Town of Smithtown and the county raised a $1 million grant to be used to preserve a portion of the Owl Hill property for open space.

Smithtown scholar Corey Victoria Geske said although the property has been around so long, there still isn’t a lot of information in regards to its historical details.

“Owl Hill is another example of beautiful architecture in Smithtown for which the architect, to my knowledge, is as yet unknown,” Geske said. “This is the kind of house that deserves that kind of research attention because it’s so special with regards to interior detail and its location, built high on the hills of Fort Salonga.”

Suffolk County police arrested a woman Oct. 3 for giving illegal massages during a raid at a massage parlor in Nesconset.

In response to numerous community complaints, Suffolk County Police 4th Precinct Crime Section officers, Suffolk County Police Criminal Intelligence detectives, agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, building inspectors and fire marshals from the Town of Smithtown conducted an investigation into illegal activities at Paradise Eden Spa, located on Smithtown Boulevard, at approximately 4 p.m.

Yingji Li, 46, of Fresh Meadows, was arrested and charged with unauthorized practice of a profession, a Class E Felony under the New York State Education law.

During the investigation conducted by the Town of Smithtown fire marshal and building inspector, 17 occupancy and town code violations were discovered. Violations were issued and the location was closed due to it being deemed an unsafe structure.

“Playing gives me such a rush — especially when you’re playing with such great players and you see all the hard work culminate in a win,” the senior setter and right side said. “We go to practice every day and work hard; we all trust each other a lot. I would never be able to play and set the people that I do if I didn’t trust them.”

That trust and confidence led Smithtown East to its seventh straight win Oct. 2 with a 3-0 sweep of Copiague, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23.

Berroyer finished with 14 assists and eight digs in the win, but she credited teammate Allie Brady for getting the team to the No. 1 spot in the League III standings.

“Allie Brady is our powerhouse,” she said of the senior outside hitter. “No one can stop her. She puts the ball down every time. She’s our best player right now.”

Brady came through for Smithtown East in crucial situations, like when her back-toback kills put the Bulls up 12-7 in the first set, or when her spike stopped Copiague’s momentum after three straight points, leading to three straight Smithtown East points in the second set.

“We believe in each other,” said Brady, who had 12 kills and 11 digs in the win. “We have great leaders on this team. All of us seniors work hard to get the team going in the right direction and the rest follow our lead.

We always have each other’s back.”

The senior gave credit to the Bulls’ juniors that contributed to the win, and Berroyer recognized one in particular: Michelle Husslein.

Husslein, an outside hitter, added a handful of service aces in a close third set, and closed out the match serving on the final two points, the second an ace to win the game.

“She’s a junior with a really strong serve, and it’s tough getting on that line, especially as an underclassman,”Berroyer said.

Husslein was filling in for the injured senior middle Steph Berdon, and Smithtown East head coach George Alamia pointed to his junior’s standout performance among others helping to fill the space.

“She was a spark plug,” he said of Husslein. “She hasn’t played a lot, and she was among several players that stepped in to play today, and she played really well.”

Alamia was quick to point to the stellar serving throughout the evening from not only Husslein but the rest of the squad as well. In total, nine players added to the Bulls’ 41 service aces, accounting for a little less than 55 percent of Smithtown East’s total points.

“Our service team was excellent,” Alamia said. “Game three we had a lot of our bench in with starters sprinkled in. Michelle [Husslein] on the line changed the game — she ran off five or six points and gave us confidence. Logan Kozlowski is a nice young setter coming up and she also got some great opportunities today in the third game.”

The Bulls remain undefeated at 7-0 on their quest to take their 11th straight League III title this season. Senior libero Alex Colón, who had 14 digs and 16 service receptions, said she’s moved by what her team has already done this year.

“It’s inspiring,” she said of the run. “At the beginning of the season it was a little rough — we all had to learn to work together [after losing seven senior starters to graduation].

We work harder than any team in the gym, we’re communicating and controlling the ball, and that’s key to getting our momentum going. When we come together and play as a team nothing can stop us.”

Smithtown East faces off against crosstown rival Smithtown West for the second time this season Oct. 4 at 5:45 p.m. Smithtown East edged its opponent 3-1 in close sets to open the season Sept. 9. Smithtown West is currently 7-2 overall and 7-1 in league play.

“This team has pressure on them — they want a league championship, they expect it and they’re looking to get it,” Alamia said.

“Every year West is a challenge, and I think we’re ready for it — we’re all in. These girls are hungry for the league title, they’re focused, we’re going to have a great practice and we’re going to give them everything we have. I think we’re ready to take what’s ours.”

At the end of August, the Smithtown Central School District’s girls varsity swim team participated in an annual fundraiser to help raise money and awareness for cancer research through the Swim Across America organization — this year joined by Harborfields Central School District’s varsity girls team.

Together, more than 40 swimmers raised $4,000 for the cause, and both teams made a commitment to do the event again next year.

Political harmony in dark times This just in: Republicans and Democrats are having a hard time getting along. Having a thorough understanding of that fact, a story that emerged from a Suffolk County Legislature meeting Oct. 3 caught our attention.

According to a spokeswoman from her office, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), the 5th district representative who we have covered since she took office in 2011, became ill during the meeting and was taken to the hospital. As of Oct. 4, the spokeswoman said she was feeling much better, and the trip to the hospital was taken “out of an abundance of caution.” Two days before, Hahn ran in the Soles for All Souls 5K Race and completed the run in 26 minutes, 17 seconds.

In any event, we wish her a speedy recovery and hope all is well going forward, and we are not alone in that sentiment.

Each year prior to local elections, TBR News Media hosts political candidates for debates to allow them ample time to lay out their platforms and constructively discuss important local issues. Democrats and Republicans sit down and discuss the most important aspects of everyday life for our neighbors. At the end of the discussion, our editorial board reaches a consensus on which candidate we would like to endorse. The issue comes out the Thursday before Election Day each year. This year will be no different.

Hahn and her opponent, Republican Edward Flood, are currently scheduled to make an appearance this Friday, Oct. 6. On the morning of Oct. 4, Flood called our main office, having also heard of what took place at the Legislature meeting, and offered to reschedule the debate should Hahn need more time to recover.

We have not decided whom we will endorse in this race — Hahn is an exemplary advocate for our community who has served as the majority leader in the Legislature and has headed up several committees — but we would like to take this opportunity to commend Flood for reaching across party lines to put a fellow human’s wellbeing above politics.

To our local politicians, keep up the good, bipartisan work, and continue to remain above the divisive political fray.

Publicly excoriating on television certain NFL players who visually expressed strong dissatisfaction with the discriminatory nature of our society, Donald Trump shockingly called them “sons of b…..s.” I do not recall any other president who used such language publicly. What sort of example is Trump making for the younger people of our nation?

What effect can the use of such vulgarity have on them, who are instructed by their parents, other family members, teachers, clergy, neighbors, etc., not to express themselves with vulgar language?

Does Trump not understand that since he is president (alas!), many people — especially schoolchildren — will automatically regard him as a role model and may repeat the words and actions that he rashly employs? If a schoolteacher were to use words like “sons of b…..s” publicly, demands would surely and understandably be made for his or her removal from the classroom.

I do not recall hearing any president in my lifetime, from Franklin Delano Roosevelt onward, publicly employing such vulgar terminology. At another level, Trump’s verbal missiles aimed at Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s appalling leader, again demonstrates Trump’s lack of understanding of the possible consequences of the use of undiplomatic speech. While almost all of us are justifiably angered and deeply concerned by the repel-

lent behavior of Kim Jong-un, surely we recognize that Donald Trump should not antagonize him publicly or privately with crude or mocking remarks. Doing so can only increase Kim Jong-un’s maniacal belligerence.

People occupying various official positions everywhere in our country and elsewhere must watch their words, a necessary requirement for those whose positions automatically make them models for imitation, especially the young. President Obama, incidentally, struck me as an outstanding example of controlled speech, despite his having been

frequently and publicly goaded by public figures with vile words.

I would like to emphatically say to Donald Trump, our rather thoughtless and frighteningly impetuous president, that when addressing the leaders of antagonistic nations, he must remind himself to heed the famed and sound advice of President Theodore Roosevelt: “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” And when he speaks about our fellow American citizens, he must learn to do so with respect and with courtesy.

Don’t vote for a constitutional convention I am writing to encourage every New Yorker to vote “no” this November to stop New York state from wasting millions of tax dollars on a constitutional convention that would, at best, reaffirm the status quo and could, at worst, take away our rights and protections.

The state Constitution guarantees the right to a free public education, to join a union, to protect our health, to care for the needy, to safe jobs, and to protect state lands and forests.

These rights — and many more — are at risk if a constitutional convention is convened.

Don’t trust everything you read. It is not going to be a “People’s Convention,” as some well-financed people would like you to believe. History has shown that the vast majority

of delegates would come from the same political apparatus we deal with in Albany right now.

Past constitutional conventions have been costly extensions of state legislative sessions, filled with political posturing, with the same politicians and special interest groups running the show.

Of the 186 delegates to the 1967 convention, 154 held public office. That means lawmakers elected as delegates could double their salaries and significantly fatten their pensions. And the overall cost is absurd. Estimates are that a convention could cost taxpayers between $50 million and $100 million.

If we believe changes are necessary, there is a less costly and more effective way to accomplish them than a convention.

Specifically, the New York State

Constitution can be amended through the state Legislature, as it has been more than 200 times, most recently in 2015 to create an independent commission on redistricting, and to allow the Legislature to save money by going paperless for proposed bills.

With all of the issues we’re facing — the possible loss of health care coverage for millions of New Yorkers, and keeping public education accessible and affordable — there are better ways to spend our hard-earned tax dollars than on an unnecessary convention.

I urge you to vote “no” on the Nov. 7 ballot referendum to hold a constitutional convention.

hank you, mental health workers.

If it weren’t for you, we might be living with even more unimaginable tragedies.

For reasons most of us, fortunately, can only imagine at a distance, people are tormented by destructive urges.

When these moments arise, hopefully, a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor or someone in a position to recognize the signs can step in and offer support, while redirecting that person toward a

to school, we clap at the end of their concerts and we feed them their meals before sending them to bed for the night.

When I was in junior high school, I read books such as “Lord of the Flies” and “The Crucible,” which my teacher Mrs. Wickle suggested were an important way to look at the “dark side” of the heart.

At the time, I found the subjects depressing and unnecessary. Why, I thought, did I have to read about such violence or mass hysteria.

In the modern world, we are in the crosshairs of everything from overseas terrorists to storms and earthquakes and, yes, to people without an apparent ideology whose final act before they take their own lives is to commit mass murder.

We look at the faces of the victims and feel the loss of those we never met.

They look like our friends and neighbors, and we know their smiles, once filled with potential, will never again light up a room.

At the same time, hundreds of people lined up for hours to do what they could — give blood — to help save those in immediate need.

Clearly, a few people in our midst have headed toward the dark side of their hearts and minds, allowing the demons that plague their lives to release the unthinkable and unimaginable.

Maybe, in addition to the discussion about gun control, we ought to appreciate the legion of mental health professionals who dedicate themselves to helping those battling against destructive urges, whose thoughts wander into the wilderness of despair.

The toll their work often takes on some of these mental health helpers is enormous, as other people’s nightmares leap from the minds of their patients into their own subconscious. The flow of information travels both ways, putting psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers at risk.

These mental health workers often talk to others in their field to help them get through the difficulties of their jobs.

They listen, they encourage, they become involved and, ultimately, they can and so often do set people on better courses in their lives, helping them feel better and live better.

By the time you read this, perhaps we’ll have an idea of what triggered the madness from this latest gunman, and maybe it will have less to do with offthe-rails thinking than with an ideology that encourages mass violence.

If it wasn’t lone-wolf insanity, but, rather, someone following instructions, we ought to find the ones who encouraged these senseless and brutal murders.

Either way, we ought to dedicate more resources to battling with the burden of a broken brain. If, somehow, a mental health professional can redirect someone who might otherwise commit incomprehensible violence, that person not only has saved a life but may have turned a would-be murderer into another conscientious citizen lining up for hours to give blood instead of planning to spill it.

Music can soothe the soul in troubled times

n the last few weeks we have been subjected to a constant bombardment of tragic news. The horrific mass killings in Las Vegas is just the latest. We have lived through reports of the sequential hurricanes that have killed, maimed and destroyed lives and property in Texas, Florida, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. We have agonized for the men, women and children caught in the Mexican earthquakes.

We ran away from news of the carnage the other night and took refuge in art. The glorious embrace of Giacomo Puccini and his soaring arias of “La Bohème,” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, welcomed us.

Puccini, you may well know, is considered one of the two most famous Italian opera composers of the 19th century, the other being Giuseppe Verdi. What I didn’t know is that he was the offspring of a musical dynasty in Lucca that included his father and the fathers preceding them as far back as his great-great-grandfather. All of these ancestors studied music at Bologna, wrote music for the church and, aided by their genes and family connections, were distinguished in their time.

Puccini’s first opera, “Le Villi,” premiering in 1884, when he was 26, was well enough received, and his subsequent “Manon Lescaut” was a triumph.

His personal life, however, was as riveting as his librettos. He eloped with his married, former piano student at the risk of being shunned. They did eventually marry, after another husband killed her womanizing husband. By

coincidence, Puccini’s opera premiered the same week as Verdi’s last opera, “Falstaff,” and talk began of Puccini being the natural heir to Verdi. At least that was what George Bernard Shaw is reported to have said.

Puccini’s next three operas are among the most popular and most often produced: “La Bohème,” “Tosca” and “Madama Butterfly.”

When “La Bohème” premiered in Turin in 1896, Arturo Toscanini conducted it, and it was immediately popular. The story is of four young artists, all starving and freezing as they work in a garret in Paris and experience the pleasures and pains of young love. The opera is at turns joyful with the energy of youth and tragic with the premature death from tuberculosis of Mimi, the seamstress, and Rodolfo’s love. As a young man in Milan, Puccini lived the life he wrote about, once sharing a single herring with three others, as portrayed in the opera.

Puccini almost died in a car accident before finishing “Madama Butterfly” but then went on to complete what is now one of the most loved operas in the world. “Tosca” followed; then

“La Fanciulla del West,” a plot set in America; “La Rondine;” and a threeact opera, including “Gianni Schicchi,” which contains my favorite aria, “O mio babbino caro.” “Turandot” was his final opera, finished after his death by his associates from his sketches, and offering the memorable, “Nessun dorma.”

Publicity about his personal life continued when his wife accused their maid of having an affair with Puccini, who was known to wander off the reservation. The maid then committed suicide, and an autopsy revealed that she had died a virgin. Puccini’s wife was accused of slander, found guilty and sentenced to five months in jail; but a payment by Puccini spared her that experience.

Ultimately 11 of Puccini’s operas are among the 200 most performed operas in the world, and the abovementioned three are in the top 10. Only Verdi and Mozart have had more operas performed. By his death in 1924, Puccini had earned $4 million from his works.

I hope this excursion in art has helped you, as it did me, to escape at least briefly from the omnipresent bad news.
