Obituary

Dr. Robert Shapiro, Smithtown Pediatrician and Hauppauge Resident care of a lot of neighbors’ children. He became the chief medical physician for all Hauppauge schools. He always made time for his patients and only recently retired seven years ago to spend time with Rachelle and his family.

He was an avid sport fan, specifically a diehard Yankee and Giants fan. While he was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan in his early years, he became a Yankee fan primarily because of Joe DiMaggio when the Dodgers eventually left New York in 1957. He loved spending time with his children and granddaughter Natalee, watching games together. He also enjoyed spending time with all of his nieces and nephews as well as all their children at so many different types of events. He loved doing crossword puzzles, playing sudoku on his phone, playing all different types of card games, backgammon, Rummikub and Trivial Pursuit.

Robert and Rachelle had a mutual love of animals and raised a guide dog, and he even rescued a dog from the Caribbean island of St. Maarten back in 2007. A very sociable person, he loved old movies, TV shows, big band music, doo-wop, music from the 1930s to the ’50s and opera. He loved to travel and took some extravagant trips. For example, Israel and Egypt, Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, Hawaii, and making wonderful family memories.

When Robert’s father died, Robert became the patriarch of the family not just for his own family, but for his extended family as well. A spiritual man, he enjoyed praying with his friends at the Chabad in the Caribbean as well as with his temple members in Hauppauge.

Predeceased by his parents and brother Richard, Robert is survived by Rachelle, his wife of 53 years; children Marcus, David and Joy; his granddaughter Natalee; and his sister Dr. Frances Shapiro-Skrobe. Buried at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, he was loved and will be missed by many family members, friends, colleagues and his animals.

A celebration of his life/memorial service will be held in the future, after the COVID-19 crisis is over.

Dr. Robert Shapiro, of Hauppauge, died Aug. 20. He was 82.

Robert was born Feb. 23, 1938, to Margaret and Nathan Shapiro. During his youth in Brooklyn, he attended Erasmus Hall High School while helping his father in the drycleaning business. He was involved in choir, attended Hebrew high school, and helped his parents by taking care of his siblings, Richard and Frances.

The doctor attended Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia and medical school in Amsterdam, Holland. As a youth, he wanted to become a rabbi but became a doctor instead. He loved children and thus became a pediatrician.

When his father was a patient in Maimonides hospital, Robert came to visit where his father introduced him to Rachelle. Rachelle was the nurse in charge of taking care of Robert’s father. They dated for three weeks after which, he proposed and three months later, they were married Sept. 17, 1967.

After marriage, they initially moved to Amsterdam, where he attended medical school.

Upon completion, they moved back to Brooklyn, where Robert finished his medical residency at Maimonides and Brookdale hospitals. In 1975, the family moved to their permanent home in Hauppauge, where he started his private practice in Smithtown that lasted for more than 40 years. They became active members of Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge and also sang in the Huntington Jewish Center choir for several years for the High Holidays.

Robert was a wonderful and easy-going man, who was very patient, understanding and took

Smithtown Parents Continue to Protest Board of Ed’s Reopening Plans

Two dozen parents and children gathered in front of the Smithtown administration building on Jericho Turnpike and New York Avenue for the fourth time in a month Aug. 27. The families were representing the Facebook group, Smithtown Parents Watchdog Group: Holding BOE and Administration Accountable. The group was formerly known as Open up Branch Brook & Nesconset El! which was initially started to persuade the Smithtown board of education to reopen up the closed elementary schools. The parents are in support of five days in person for K-12 and believe the opening up of the two elementary schools would allow for proper social distancing, even though the district has stated that it would not. Currently, Smithtown Central School District students will start the school year off following a hybrid model where they will spend two or three days a week in school and the other days learning remotely.

The Facebook group’s founder, Stacy Murphy, said the group members feel there are other issues to keep their eyes on and decided to change the Facebook group name. The timing of the Aug. 27 rally was to coincide with the board’s Zoom meeting at the same time. Murphy said parents have been frustrated that the board members won’t agree to an in-person meeting even though

gatherings of 50 people are allowed, and the attendees could socially distance in a room that can hold 2,000 people.

“They’re using what our country went through, and our state went through, to be their shield of defense to hide,” she said, adding she wonders how much longer they can hold solely virtual board meetings.

Murphy said she feels that with the increased number of parents getting involved, more will vote in school board elections and run for the board themselves next year. The mother said another issue parents have is that students will be required to bring their Chromebooks back and forth from home to school.

“You’re telling me when my second- and fifth-graders are in class they’re going to have their face in a screen again, because 50% of the time isn’t enough?” she said. “I want them writing and looking at their teacher’s face and their classmates.”

Murphy and others are asking the district to have a benchmark date for considering when schools can go to a five-day plan.

Republican state Senate candidate Mario Mattera stopped by the rally. He said his family, especially his daughter, who is a senior and captain of the kickline team, is upset when they hear surrounding districts such as Three Village and Hauppauge have a five full-day in-person option. He said he believes students need interactions with teachers and friends, and with parents and school administrators working together, inperson can be accomplished safely. He added he worries that children will fall behind in their studies or suffer emotionally.

“Our educators are doing a great job, but it’s not the same unless you’re in that classroom,” he said.

As a parent, Mattera echoed Murphy’s sentiments that the hope is the board will closely evaluate the situation and offer full inperson classes sooner rather than later.

A handful of parents rallied in front of the building once again Sept. 1 to protest the school’s updated mask policy. In an Aug. 31 letter to the district community, families were notified that masks would now be required all day, even when social distancing is capable. Signed by Russell Stewart, interim superintendent, and Mark Secaur, deputy superintendent, the letter stated that mask breaks would be provided and there would be partitions to every student desk.

“We will be monitoring our processes and reviewing feedback and data daily,” Stewart and Secaur wrote. “Additionally, we are convening an advisory committee to look back at regular intervals and make recommendations for transitioning to a full return to school for all students.”

Let’s Play Two: Little League Holds Championship Games

Just ask Richard Tomitz, who is the head coach of Philly Pretzel Factory in the St. James-Smithtown Little League. When his son Derek threw the final strike in the minors’ championship game Aug. 30 at Gaynor Park in St. James, Tomitz was overcome with emotion.

“I have to admit, when the umpire yelled ‘strike three’ and the game was over, it brought a tear to my eye,” Tomitz said. “When I really think about it, this baseball season has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever been a part of in my entire life.”

Quite an extraordinary statement, but only if looked at in a vacuum. Considering Tomitz, who also serves as president of the league, his feelings of exaltation come not just from his team’s championship, but also from the fact there was a season at all. With the coronavirus sucking so much joy out of everyday life across Long Island and throughout the world, it is not lost upon Tomitz and his fellow league board members that playing baseball in 2020 helped restore at least a modicum of that joy.

“For everyone involved — players, coaches, parents — it was a good distraction and it gave everyone a chance to get out into the fresh air and compete,” said Steve Friscia, who is the league’s coaches coordinator, ran much of the league’s logistics and in 2019 was a win or two away from bringing our own SJSLL team of 12 year olds to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where they would have competed in the Little League World Series.

He and his colleagues on the board were extremely careful when they were given the green light to play in July and strictly enforced a long list of pandemic-related protocols throughout the year.

“The community was great,” Friscia said.

“Everyone distanced and wore masks, and the parents who came down were spread apart.

We switched out balls and were very careful with water bottles. It really took a village to make sure everyone stuck to the rules and it allowed us to have a successful season.”

Another coach and league board member, Steve Zummo, who coached in both the major (ages 11 and 12) and minor league (ages 9 and 10) championship games on this perfect Sunday for baseball, also recognized what playing baseball meant to the kids of this town.

“This day is incredibly uplifting and incredibly important,” Zummo said. “On a beautiful day like this to be able to culminate the season with everything we all have been

through, this baseball season has been nothing short of 100% success. I’m not saying it wasn’t without challenges, but definitely challenges that were worth taking on.”

For the record, Zummo’s 11- and 12-yearold youngsters on the Schubert’s Auto Body squad lost 13-8, despite taking an 8-0 lead.

Luke Mercardante of Universal Testing & Inspection stroked a home run to lead the comeback charge and pitched the final three innings without allowing a run.

“We’ve been making comebacks all year,” said the young Mercardante, as he was mobbed by his teammates. “We never lost hope.”

It cannot be confirmed, as the records do not go back to 1957 — the league’s first year — but it is believed to be the largest comeback in SJSLL championship game history. In the minor league championship, Philly Pretzel Factory beat Long Island Hearing, 8-1, ending an unforgettable Little League baseball season in a year, for the most part, we’d all like to forget.

Editorial Letters to the Editor Dear North Shore Students An Open Letter to Congressman Zeldin We’re not going to lie to you. We know this school year is going to be a tough one.

If the end of the 2019-20 academic year has taught us anything, it’s that getting an education during a pandemic is difficult. Watching parents rally across the North Shore has also shown that not all parents agree with their districts’ plans for the new school year. Some want more in-person learning, while others want options for keeping you home instead.

While it’s imperative for parents and school administrators to work together to provide the best education for their children, for students the most important thing on your minds should be getting that education while staying healthy.

We know some parents feel that their children may have fallen behind during the few months schools went fully remote earlier in the year. All of a sudden switching to remote learning left many districts scurrying to figure out how to best utilize this type of e-learning. While some said they excelled at it, others very much did not.

No matter how you’re returning to school, it’s important for you to raise your hand if something doesn’t make sense whether it’s regarding a lesson or even how to follow public health guidelines.

It can be hard sometimes for a student to admit they don’t know something, but now more than ever it’s important to take control of your studies and your health. Every child has dreams for the future, and it’s the school’s responsibility to help them obtain those goals. So, to students, we say, “Speak up!” Let your parents know how you’re feeling about how things are going, or touch base with a teacher or guidance counselor.

For those who are attending in-person classes, we know you’ll have to handle new precautionary measures such as social distancing, wearing masks when it’s not possible to stand 6 feet away and having temperatures taken upon leaving the house or entering the school. We know a lot of responsibility has been put on your shoulders. What do you do if you see someone not complying? Speak up.

It’s hard, we know. Bullying is a bigger problem than ever so you may not want to call attention to yourself. But with some New York colleges open for only a week or two, we are already seeing some temporary closings, including SUNY Oneonta which at the beginning of the week reported 177 COVID-19 positive cases since the start of the fall semester with 44 students quarantining and 65 in isolation on campus. The guidelines are to help keep you and your loved ones as healthy and safe as possible. It’s imperative to realize that someone can be infectious, even if symptoms aren’t being shown.

We know this is a lot of responsibility to put on young shoulders. But as journalists that have been fortunate enough to interview many of the students in our coverage areas, we know the depth and breadth of the intelligence and empathy of our youth.

To those who will study for hours despite not having immediate access to teachers, and to the student-athletes who continue to practice alone on the field or on the lawn with their parents, we see you. We know you got this.

Our editorial staff also wants to let our young people know that we’re here for you. If you see a persisting problem going on at your school, email us at news@tbrnewsmedia.com, and we’ll look into it. You can even share with us your feelings about navigating these new waters in a letter to the editor to be published right in this very newspaper.

It’s going to be hard, but we’ll get through this together.

You keep using the adjectives like “dark, negative, extreme, dangerous, radical” when describing Democrats and Liberals. That is astonishing to me since your base — and your Republican mentor President Donald Trump’s base — have followings that include the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, extreme and radical religious leaders, racists, anti-Semites, a 17-year-old murderer of protesters and gun-toting suburbanites.

I would like to inform you of what has been happening to me, my family and my community.

On Father’s Day, a small gathering of six families, including children, held a peace and equality vigil on a corner a block from my house. A truck pulled up, and the driver starting screaming and threatening us. His verbiage included the N-word, the C-word, the B-word, rape and telling us to get out of his community (FYI, he doesn’t own a home in our community). Then he left us with these words, “I am going home to get my gun and f-ing kill you all.” Again, there were five children with us.

Now two other families and I have an order of protection against him. He also quoted Trump from his Tulsa, Oklahoma, gathering from the night before [on June 20], which you [Zeldin] were in attendance. A week after that incident, as

we stood on the corner again, this person drove his truck toward us causing us to quickly disperse. Police were called and while the police were helping us, a man walked up and assumed the police were called against us. The man walking asked the police if he could, “Stand his ground (i.e., shoot us) if we came onto his property.” This man lives in my community. Two weeks later, Lee, another stellar citizen who is a fan of your mindset, came onto my property and tore down signs. Not once, but twice. When my husband and I confronted him as he was reading a sign I put up addressing the person who was trespassing, he stated, “BLM is a terrorist organization and he is proud of his white skin.” I guess he felt his white skin allows him to destroy personal property and trespass.

The policeman, who happened to be patrolling because of the other racist, intervened. Your racist fan was told to stay away and never have contact with us. Now, we have one of these lunatics or possibly another racist dumping garbage on our property.

Lee, because of the hate, venom and lies you continue to spew to the public, these racist and hateful men feel entitled to behave in such a deplorable manner.

I have lived in my community for 20 years. This is the first time I have security

cameras and a genuine fear each time a car, especially a pickup truck, slows down in front of my house.

My stomach turns each and every time I see a Trump banner and a sign that endorses you. (By the way, is it Zeldin or “Zelden”? A lot of your peeps spell it Zelden.) I would never destroy other people’s property, and I couldn’t imagine, even on my worst day, threatening to go home and get a get a gun to kill them and their children. This is not fake news.

These events actually happened and if you choose to investigate, I will supply you with the case numbers.

These are your people, Lee. They are dark. They are negative. They are extreme. They are radical and they are most certainly dangerous. I remember when you started your hateful and vicious political journey at the Setauket Neighborhood House when the police had to be called to rein in your constituents.

Your vile conduct has unleashed the worst in people. I believe the people of Congressional District 1 have had enough and will choose justice, peace and equity for all this November, and we will vote you out. Then mercifully, we will no longer be subjected to your dark and dangerous ways.

Democratic National Convention Held No Surprises

The recent Democratic convention was full of a lot of things, but surprise was not one of them. They excoriated President Donald Trump (R), whom they claim to believe is a racist, misogynist, xenophobe, homophobe and bigot. They ignored all of the great accomplishments of his first term, including achieving the lowest unemployment rates ever for African Americans and Hispanic Americans, the highest number of employed Americans in history, the highest median household income ever recorded and countless other benefits of real and lasting importance to the American people. They nominated former Vice President Joe Biden (D), for whom no person yet discovered has any enthusiasm whatsoever and turned out the lights and went back to their basements.

Aside from Trump’s accomplishments, there was one other relevant subject that completely escaped their attention, and that was the violence, looting, mayhem and anarchy that has paralyzed an alarming number of our greatest cities, perpetrated by members of Antifa and other Democratic sympathizers. The reason for this apparent lack of interest may be that all of the victimized cities, without exception, are governed by mayors of the Democratic persuasion, aided and abetted by equally misguided governors, and this is a subject that they would prefer not to discuss in public.

Needless to say, the bad actors who commit this despicable and felonious violence are not to be confused with peaceful protesters, who are exercising their rights of free speech and peaceful assembly. Regrettably, it appears that our

Democratic mayors and governors choose not to recognize this distinction, and have elected to pander to their supporters by declining to enforce the laws that they have sworn to uphold, and to jeopardize the property and lives of law-abiding citizens for the sake of securing the votes of their antisocial supporters. The good news is that the choice for voters could not be more clear.

If you want Stony Brook to become Portland, Setauket to become Kenosha and Smithtown to become Seattle, you should vote for Biden. If not, and you like the idea that all of us are entitled to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” as guaranteed in the Declaration of Independence, then Trump must get your vote.

Thoughts on the Eve of a Radically Altered College Drop Off

A

heaviness hovers in the air as we prepare to pack our daughter’s stuff into the car and drive her back to college, an environment fraught with new rules and anxiety. We realize this experiment in campus life, such as it is, might end in days or even a few weeks, as her school may pull the same rip chord it used in March.

While she is returning to campus, all but one of her classes is remote.

Last year, with its jumble of emotions from taking her to college for the first time,

seems so wonderfully innocent and low stress by comparison.

By taking her to college this week, she is already arriving on campus three weeks after classes began and is scheduled to return home before Thanksgiving. That means she’ll be on campus, at most, for two and a half months. That is two weeks longer than summer camp.

We want her to learn, have fun, meet new people and take advantage of college opportunities. Taking these goals one at a time, I’m not convinced that remote classes in which professors record lectures students can watch at their leisure provides the ideal academic experience.

How can they ask questions? How can they turn to the person sitting next to them, or, in the modern world, six seats away, and ask to repeat what they didn’t hear or to see if the professor might have misspoken?

College learning occurs on and off campus.

In an ideal world, students not only learn from their professors and teaching assistants, but also from each other. They form study groups where

they share notes and test each other.

They could share their screens and form virtual study groups. In these small groups, however, they can and do send private chats to other people and feel freer to respond to the beep or flash of light on another electronic device, distracting them from the group exercise.

The personal connection through the computer is also limited, as people can’t slap each other on the back or chase each other around a library during a much-needed break.

We also want her to have fun, which isn’t the top priority for schools desperate to stay alive financially while keeping the campus community healthy. Even with the most active measures to protect everyone, the virus finds ways to evade detection and to spread.

The virus has become the boogeyman of our childhood nightmares, but instead of lurking under the bed or in dark corners of the closet, it waits on door knobs, in airborne particles and on banisters.

To protect everyone, the school isn’t allowing students to visit other dorms. They are limited in

social gatherings outside, where they have to be six feet apart and also need to wear masks.

In a recent email, my daughter’s school told her, “If you see something, say something.”

Those words, which became the cultural norm after 9/11, suggest that careless students are the equivalent of viral terrorists. Perhaps a better approach would be to encourage students to model safe behavior and to protect themselves and others on campus.

To facilitate safer social interactions, schools might consider putting up tents, in which they place small circles on the floor that are six feet apart. Students could visit each other in these settings, where they can talk and laugh and see each other in person and wear that great blouse or cool shirt that doesn’t look as good on zoom.

Ultimately, the opportunities they have will depend on the ability of the school, working with students, to figure out what they can do and not what they can’t or shouldn’t. We hope the challenges and adversity of the current reality somehow bring our daughter figuratively closer to her new friends, at a safe social distance.

Autumn Is Here and to Be Enjoyed

A

n old friend visited, one who had lived here many years, and we used the occasion to have a mini reunion of sorts. The half dozen or so of us wives and mothers, who had come to Long Island in our 20s and raised our children here as our husbands built their careers, are now widows together.

We gathered at the beach, then again over breakfast, then on to another beach over two days to catch Between each other up on our lives and you and me the progress of

BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF our children and grandchildren. It was a moveable feast of personal histories and philosophies.

The good news is that our children and grandchildren seem to be doing pretty well.

Some of the children went into the same careers as their fathers or mothers, others went in different directions. Almost all moved off the Island, although they return for regular visits or Zoom during this unprecedented time. Watching the grandchildren grow and develop their own lives and ideas with little responsibility needed from us is a delight.

Of course, we talked about our various health issues and traded advice, but not too much since there were more interesting subjects. One theme that came up was our appreciation for what life has given us. We all treasure our families and the love among the members. We also deeply rejoice in our friendships, especially those of a lifetime. Old friends cannot be replaced. They remember our parents, they laugh with us over what seemed in the past like serious problems and they bear witness to our lives. They know us for who we are, and best of all, they don’t see us as aged, but rather essentially as we looked when we first met.

Over the years, we swam together at the apartments’ pool, we cooked for each other with late dinners — “gourmet groups,” we

called them — after the kids were put to bed in our new homes. We skied together in Vermont, played tennis at the school courts and then in the tennis clubs, we sailed together on the Sound, we cheered as our offspring moved through elementary, junior and senior high schools, we applauded as they went off to colleges of their choice, and we began to dine out regularly with each other. We comforted each other as, one by one, we began to lose our parents. We were becoming the older generation.

Most fun of all, we began to travel with each other. Places we visited, in no particular order and with various combinations of friends, included Canada, Alaska, France, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Monaco, England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Montenegro, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Bali, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Grand Cayman, St. Thomas, Costa Rica, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Italy, Italy, Italy.

For each and every one of those destinations, we have indelible memories, and always of some combination of us together. And we have the endless number of photographs to remind us of the details.

What are we left with now? We are enormously grateful for our lives, our health, our children and grandchildren, our memories and our future, we hope, to some degree together. We are more mellow now and able to distinguish the minor irritations from the major challenges. We think of ourselves as in the autumn of our lives, grateful for all we can do and aspire to do. And interestingly, none of us has moved to live with any of our children, although some of us have moved to smaller quarters or warmer locations. If we could just get past this pandemic and go back to kicking up our heels, we would look forward to that.

The underlying theme from our gatherings is our profound gratitude and appreciation for life. One friend said she notices birds more, listens to their songs, admires their colors, enjoys nature in a deeper way now. I think she spoke for us all.
