A risky U-turn in Cutchogue has left the greater North Shore community directionless. A limousine filled with friends doing the right thing fell victim to a driver who was doing the wrong thing when Steven Romeo, 55, was driving his red pickup truck in Cutchogue allegedly under the influence of alcohol and collided with
the limousine as it attempted to make a U-turn near the intersection of Depot Lane and County Route 48, killing four and injuring six, including Romeo, Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota said. Emergency responders reported four victims dead on arrival, including Smithtown’s Brittney Schulman, 23, and Lauren Baruch, 24, as well as Stephanie Belli, 23, of Kings Park, and Amy Grabina, 23, of Commack. Crai, 23, of Scarsdale, Alicia Arundel, 24, of Setauket, and Olga Lipets, 24, of Brooklyn, all of whom were still hospitalized on Wednesday, Spota said. Romeo was arraigned on Sunday at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport due to injuries sustained in the crash and pleaded not guilty to one count of driving while intoxicated. He was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 cash bail or $1 million bond, Spota said. Spota provided more details on the accident at a press conference in Southold on Monday afternoon alongside Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley, who was on the scene soon after the collision. “This was a gathering of young women who were behaving responsibly by hiring a limo for the day, enjoying the North Fork vineyards together,” Spota said. “They knew they would be consuming some alcohol, and because they wanted to act responsibly, they did not choose to drive.” Spota said the limousine kicked off its Saturday afternoon trip at Baruch’s home in Smithtown, embarking on a vineyard tour on the eastern part of Long Island, stopping at the Long Island Vodka Distillery in Baiting Hollow and
then Vineyard 48 in Cutchogue. They were on their way back to Smithtown when the driver of the limousine, who Spota said was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, made the turn and the fatal accident occurred. The news sent shock waves through Smithtown and the entire North Shore, moving Smithtown Supervisor Pat Vecchio (R) to order all flags at town buildings to fly at half-mast. “The entire Smithtown community is affected by such a tragic loss and mourns deeply,” Vecchio said in a statement. “The shock of the loss of four young and beautiful women in the prime of life is difficult to comprehend. We pray for the families and friends who are suffering so.” Belli, Baruch and Schulman were all decorated members of the national and language honor societies by the time they graduated from Smithtown High School West and were remembered Monday as shining lights in their graduating classes. Schools Superintendent James Grossane said Belli, a 2010 graduate, had an infectious smile and was an enthusiastic student and member of the district’s championship kickline team. Smithtown FD fires up The Smithtown Fire Department is in the final stages of having its historic 1935 Mack Ladder Truck fully restored. A Department Restoration Committee has been given the task of having this piece of Long Island history returned to its former glory. The restoration is not using Fire Department funds or taxpayer dollars for the project. The entire restoration is being funded by the generosity of Smithtown Fire Department members and the general community. For the second consecutive year the Restoration Committee will host a chick-
en barbecue at 5 p.m. on Aug. 1, featuring the sounds of South Bound, a popular Long Island country band. Entry is $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the event. Last year’s event was enthusiastically received with hundreds of music lovers in attendance to enjoy a complete BBQ chicken dinner, hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, beer and wine. LI’s fight against drug abuse gets help from Washington Zeldin throws support behind two substance abuse bills By Victoria Espinoza
Rep. Lee Zeldin took to Kings Park on Sunday to join the fight against drug abuse, an issue that is plaguing communities on Long Island and across the nation. Zeldin (R-Shirley) announced his backing of two bills in Congress — the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2015, H.R. 953, and the Stop Overdose Stat Act, H.R. 2850 — which seek to help those struggling with drug abuse and prevent future abuse. Zeldin is co-sponsoring both bills. “It’s clear we must come together as a community and a nation to combat this growing issue,” Zeldin said. According to the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, the percentage of state high school students who reported use of heroin more than doubled between 2005 and 2011, from 1.8 percent to 4 percent. “We can’t treat them and street them, which is what is currently happening in our emergency rooms,” said Linda Ventura, treasurer of Families in Support of Treatment, known as F.I.S.T., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting
and educating families which are struggling with a loved one’s addiction. “There should be no more shame with someone struggling with this disease, no, stigma — that has to go.” Ventura, who is also involved with the Suffolk County Prevention Resource Center, is more than just a member of activist groups. She lost her son, Thomas, in March 2012 to drugs. Bill 953 would help people grappling with drug abuse obtain the services needed to put them on the road to recovery. It would provide up to $80 million in the form of grant funding to help treat and prevent addiction through community-based education and prevention programs, and treatment and recovery programs. The grants would further help expand prescription drug monitoring programs and provide police forces and emergency medical responders with higher supplies of Narcan, a prescription drug that slows down an opioid overdose so a person can live. The legislation has 20 co-sponsors — Democrats and Republicans — and was introduced by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI). “It’s a good bill on its merits alone, and

it doesn’t matter what names or letters are attached to it,” Zeldin said. Bill 2850 would provide an additional $25 million over a five-year period for Narcan production and distribution and provide more medical professionals and families with the lifesaving drug. The act, introduced by Rep. Donna
Edwards (D-MD), would also establish a preventative research task force that would look into ways to prevent future overdose deaths, while taking a preventative approach against drug abuse. Zeldin was joined by members of the community including Suffolk County ZELDIN continued on page A5

The congressman wanted to show the only way to win the battle was to remain united. Like Ventura, the fight was personal for some of those in attendance at Sunday’s press conference. Teri Kroll, secretary for F.I.S.T.’s board of directors and a member of the resource center, tragically lost her son to prescription pills. “I lost my son, Timothy, in August of 2009 after a 14-month struggle with prescription drugs, which eventually led to heroin,” she said. “He passed away after eight and a half months of sobriety.” Saji Francis, the doctor who prescribed Timothy the drug he eventually became addicted to, was arrested shortly after Timothy passed away. In 2010, Francis was convicted of illegally selling prescription pills and sentenced to six months in jail. Kolodny, who also serves as the director of Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing, explained how many people start abusing drugs after taking prescription medications. “To control this epidemic we need to prevent new people from getting this disease, and treat those who are suffering,” he said. “We also need to get doctors and dentists to prescribe more cautiously. If not, these overdose levels with continue to rise.”

Bicyclist killed in Lake Ronkonkoma crash Suffolk County police are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a Bohemia bicyclist in Lake Ronkonkoma on Tuesday evening. Laura Heerbrandt, 23, of Ronkonkoma, was driving a 2014 Nissan eastbound on Portion Road when her car struck Luis Benitez, 51. According to police, Benitez swerved into her lane of traffic as he was traveling westbound on Portion Road. Benitez was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Heerbrandt was not injured. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this crash to contact the Fourth Squad at 631854-8452. Armed robber hits Hauppauge 7-Eleven A masked man robbed a 7-Eleven in Hauppauge early Monday morning, injuring the clerk on duty. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, the masked suspect, who was also wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and sunglasses, entered the convenience store on Townline Road shortly before 2 a.m., displayed what appeared to be a gun and demanded cash from the clerk. After the clerk complied, giving him cash from the drawer, the assailant fled on foot, heading west on Townline. The clerk suffered a minor injury during the holdup, police said. He was treated at Stony Brook University Hospital and released. Police described the robber as being about 6 feet tall and having a

Suffolk County police and 4th Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help in identifying and locating a man who stole merchandise from a Commack store last month. The man stole assorted men’s clothing from Kohl’s at 45 Crooked Hill Road on June 2 at about 6:15 p.m. The clothing has a value of about $400. Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

PEOPLE Residents honored at The University of Scranton
Christopher P. Cacioppo of Smithtown and Rebecca L. Meyers of Lindenhurst were among the 59 members of The University of Scranton’s undergraduate class of 2015 honored for academic excellence, service or both at Class Night on May 29. Also recognized were the university’s two Fulbright scholarship recipients for the 2015-2016 academic year. Cacioppo received the Excellence in Electronic Commerce Award. He graduated cum laude with a double major in electronic commerce and marketing. As a research assistant to Yibai Li, Cacioppo has studied the correlation between businesses’ social media presence and their financial success. He was also a campus representative for Serengetee, a clothing company. Cacioppo graduated from Smithtown High School West. Meyers was the recipient, ex aequo, of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certi-
fied Public Accountants Award. An accounting major, she graduated summa cum laude. Meyers was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta, the national honor society of freshmen; Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor society of financial information; Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society; and Omega Beta Sigma, the women’s business honor society. She served as the treasurer of Wishmakers on campus. She was also a member of the Business Club, the Society of Accounting Students and Students for Suicide Prevention. After a summer internship with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Meyers will return to The University of Scranton to serve as a graduate teaching assistant and complete her master’s degree in accounting. Meyers graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville.
trotta welcomes concerts to town A summer tradition returned to Smithtown on July 9 with music filling the night air and hundreds of people sitting on the lawn of the main branch of the Smithtown Library to enjoy a series of Thursday night concerts featuring tribute bands during the months of July and August. “It is my privilege to obtain a county grant through the Suffolk County Office of Economic Development to support the Friends of the Smithtown Library in providing free family entertainment to the residents of Smithtown,” Legislator Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) said. “Last year, more than 20,000 people attended the concerts,” Trotta added.

Trotta congratulates Eagle Scout trio
Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) recognized three new Eagle Scouts from Troop 7 at their recent Court of Honor at Sts. Philip and James Church in St. James. James Burke and Matthew Whalen joined the Cub Scouts in first grade, and Frank Coppola started with the organization in second grade. This September, they will all begin college. Burke renovated the recreation room for students at the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown, where he built a custom entertainment center and purchased a new TV and Bose surround-sound system for the students to enjoy during their downtime in order to complete the requirements for his Eagle Scout award. For his Eagle Scout project, Coppola built a 16-foot wooden fence and planted a flower garden at Angela’s House in Stony Brook, which is home to medically frail children, to be enjoyed by the residents, their families and visitors.

Whalen wanted his Eagle Scout project to benefit the military, so he cleaned and refurbished the American Legion Sherwood Brothers Post 1152 in St. James for the veterans. In addition, he framed and organized the collection of photos of various World War II events so they could be properly displayed along with the medals of the soldiers. Trotta noted that Scout James Burke waited two years to celebrate the attainment of his Eagle Scout Award so that he could share the moment with his fellow Scouts and friends Frank Coppola and Matt Whalen. “This decision by James to wait for his friends to celebrate together is a testament to what Scouting is all about and their camaraderie and friendship. Because you all have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout this is something that will be with you for the rest of your lives and you will always be held to a higher standard because of this achievement,” he said.

Quail fly the coop at Caleb Smith park

A record number of bobwhite quails were released this year, and many of the students, teachers and parents who raised the birds helped welcome them to Caleb Smith State Park Preserve in Smithtown on Saturday. For 12 years, Eric Powers, a biologist and wildlife educator, has been at the forefront of organizing the annual quail release at Caleb Smith and other parks in the area. He described this year’s event as the largest one yet, as a record number of schools raised the quail chicks and 1,400 quails were released. “The idea of bringing back the quail is to bring balance back to our ecosystem,” Powers said at the rainy morning release.
Unlike nonnative guinea fowl, which “eat good wildlife” like salamanders and dragonflies, northern bobwhite quail are native to Long Island and play a vital role in controlling tick populations without harming other native species, according to Powers. Those in attendance included volunteers, students, teachers and Long Island comedian Joey Kola, who said that he “saw this program and jumped on right away” after personally experiencing Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a tickborne illness transmitted to humans through a tick bite. Schulman, he said, was another 2010 graduate and had a profound love for her family. “The Smithtown school district administration, board of education, staff and school community are truly saddened over the horrific tragedy involving the deaths of three former High School West graduates,” Grossane said. “Although these girls graduated from the district several years ago, their personalities and memories they left behind are still remembered by those who had the honor and pleasure of knowing them while in school.” Grabina graduated in 2010 from Commack High School and went on to pursue accounting at Florida State University, ultimately landing a job at Ernst & Young in Tallahassee, Fla. Brenda Lentsch, a spokeswoman for Commack High School, said in a statement the loss was difficult to put into words. “This terrible tragedy affects our entire community, and all who knew them,” she said. “We send our heartfelt sympathies to their parents, family and friends. The Commack community always rallies around those in need.” Grabina and her former classmate Arundel were in the limo on Saturday, but only the latter made it out alive. Both the speed of Romeo’s vehicle and his blood alcohol content were still not known, pending results as per the investi-
gation, the DA said. Spota did say, however, that the man had admitted to drinking beer that afternoon before the crash. Flatley, who responded to the crash soon after being dispatched around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, said Romeo remained at the scene for about 15 minutes following the collision, but then took off on foot and jumped a fence before police were able to retrieve him for questioning. The police chief said a witness was able to help provide details regarding the limousine accident, which has become all too common for that area. “Over the last two or three years, we’ve had issues with limousines making very difficult turns at that intersection and we have been writing summonses for failing to yield the right-of-way to vehicles that are in the westbound direction at that intersection,” he said. “I’m sure we write at least, especially during the busier months, at least 10 or 12 summonses a month.” Spota said Romeo, who will be processed at the Southold Town Police Department upon his release from the hospital, had not acquired any DWI-related charges before Saturday’s crash. No information on the possibility of additional charges was provided. The horrific tragedy occurred just six days after another accident allegedly linked to driving while intoxicated, Spota said. Last week, another fatal crash on the Southern State Parkway killed 37-year-old Ancio Ostane, his 8-year-old son, Andy, and his 4-year-old daughter, Sephora, in what police charged as another alcoholrelated hit-and-run accident.

Having completed a historic high school volleyball resume at Kings Park, graduate Amanda Gannon will look to extend that resume at the collegiate level, as she heads back to Iona College this fall.
Renee Gannon, Amanda’s mother and former volleyball coach at Bethpage High School, said her daughter’s commitment to Iona is a result of years of hard work. “I am so happy for her,” she said. “This is something she’s honestly wanted since she was in seventh grade when she started travel volleyball. … She’s just worked so hard for this and I’m so proud of her.” The four-time Long Island champion graduated high school in January in order to attend her first semester at Iona early, and practice with its Division I volleyball team. Amanda Gannon said she was happy with the decision to forego her final months of high school classes to get a jump-start on college, as well as acclimating herself to the Gaels’ program. “I can’t wait to go back,” she said. “Going there in the spring was amazing and I’m so happy I decided to leave high school early. We only trained in the spring and didn’t get to play, but the girls are really nice, I love the coach and I’m looking forward to the season starting.” Iona head coach Jon Killingbeck said the extra semester has been beneficial for all parties. “We’re super excited to have Amanda as part of our program,” he said. “With every player we try to get to know how to reach them better and I think in the last six months I have strengthened my

Tragedy hit close to home over the weekend — countless lives were shattered when an alleged drunk driver slammed into a limousine carrying a group of eight young women, killing four who hailed from our own North Shore communities. Saturday’s Cutchogue crash captivated communities near Photo by Phil Corso and far. Brittney Schulman, Lauren Baruch, Stephanie Belli and Amy Grabina were friends, daughters, girlfriends, sisters and young women just starting their adult lives. Tragic doesn’t even begin to explain what happened on that Cutchogue road. But the women weren’t alone, and the surviving four women, who remain hospitalized as of Monday, need our support. At a press conference on Monday, Suffolk County district Attorney Tom Spota told a crowd of reporters, many of whom came from affiliate stations and out-of-town papers, to be reasonable, in light of a recent incident in which a member of the press entered the hospital in an attempt to see one of the survivors. “We have four who survived, who certainly have suffered horrible, horrible trauma,” Spota said. “Not only bodily trauma, but certainly mentally. And we have people — reporters — who are trying to sneak in to talk to these young women. i just think that we really should — let’s all think about it and let’s be reasonable here.” We find these actions disrespectful to the victims and survivors and their families and do not stand behind them. As journalists, we understand the responsibility news organizations have to inform the public about events such as this, but sneaking into a hospital room is excessive, and it is not right to serve a readership at a victim’s expense. As a community newspaper, we are protective of the neighborhoods we cover because we live here. When we get word of car crashes, many of us have to wonder if a loved one was involved. What happened on Saturday could have happened to any one of us. To the women recovering, the families affected and the communities trying to come to terms with these losses, we will still be here to listen if and whenever you are ready to speak. our thoughts are with you.

To The ediTor: Smithtown real property taxpayers should ask themselves why our taxes are so high since even in 2015, we still don’t have a paid fire department, a sewer system or sidewalks on all of our streets. The answer is because Suffolk County property owners pay for some of the highest compensated police personnel, school administrators and teachers in the entire United States. They also still give defined pensions to our county and local elected officials who, essentially, have temporary positions and whose continued employment hinges on being reelected every two to four years. Yet, even with this “sword of damocles” hanging over them, they are confident enough of retaining their positions for 20,
30 or more years, to make politics their life’s work. As much as i love Smithtown, one has to admit that those who pay 100 percent of its operating costs, i.e., the real property owners, need to have a more direct say on how those monies are spent. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has taken a belated but beneficial first step on curtailing school spending by imposing an annual 2 percent tax cap increase on school budgets. This same restriction should now be applied to all salary and pension demands of civil service and elected political employees, thereby limiting our real estate tax bill increases to that same level. imagine if this provision had been imposed 30 or 40 years ago, when many seniors, like myself, bought our first homes in Suffolk? our real estate tax bills would not have even doubled,
instead of having quintupled, in that period of time. does the average homeowner with a $10,000 a year real estate tax bill realize this is the equivalent of paying cash for a brand new Toyota Camry every two years and handing it over to the Smithown receiver of taxes, just for the privilege of continuing to live here? As i and other retired senior homeowners contemplate leaving Long island due to the unrelenting cost-of-living increases, we could ask why, after raising families, paying our taxes and maintaining our properties for decades, what we have done wrong to make Long island want to discard us, in our sunset years?

ack when my kids were much younger, they didn’t always play with their best friends at school or even on playdates. Sometimes, their friends would push trains around a room while they would bounce a ball, connect the dots or create an original drawing. The first time I heard the term “parallel play,” I remember nodding in agreement.
Fast forward to the teenage years, and on most days parents and their children live parallel lives. We occupy the same house, we walk in and out of the same bathroom, we sometimes sit at the same table, but we don’t always connect or even interact with each other on a substantive basis. Just to keep my kids on their toes, I sometimes ask them on a weekend how school was. The conversation goes something like this. Me: “Hey guys, how was school?” Kids: “Good.” Me: Smiling. Kids: Replaying the short tape of the conversation to see why dad is still looking at them. Kids: “Wait, we didn’t have school today.” Me: “Right, so tell me, how was your Saturday morning.” Kids: “Good.” Me: Sigh. Recently, though, the stars all aligned for my family, giving us a chance for more than the usual
brief interactions on our way to something else. My daughter started reading the John Green young-adult novel, “Paper Towns.” She finished it in little more than a day and left it on a counter. My wife and I took turns reading the same book. When we suggested our son try reading something during the summer, he initially resisted. Given the consistent message from my wife and me, he relented and grabbed the nearest book which, as it turned out, happened to be “Paper Towns.” What’s followed has been a bending of those parallel lines. Remarkably, our daughter who considers herself something of a morning person in the late afternoon woke up one day and entered into a discussion with me about the book. Yes, that’s right, a discussion. I consider any exchange of dialogue that involves more than two sentences, eye contact and a continuation of a conversation beyond a single
room a discussion. It’s not that she or I loved the book, or even particularly related to it. The interaction allowed us to share what we thought of the overall plot points, of the characters in the book and the story arc. We had also both read another of Green’s books, “Looking for Alaska,” and compared some themes that overlapped in both books. In the meantime, conversations with our son about what he’s read have included a detailed recall of the most recent chapter he completed. No, this isn’t a ringing endorsement of the book or of the author. In fact, none of the four of us is eagerly encouraging friends and family to get a copy as soon as possible so they can read it before they see the movie. I am, however, suggesting that a family book club is a way to create a delightful and meaningful intersection of those parallel lines, enabling us to converse and connect. We have had our moments when

Given our different schedules, however, that has happened considerably less often than I would have imagined. The benefit of a book over, say, a trip to a lake or an amusement park is that the words on the page give us common ground. That becomes the starting point from which we can share our respective perspectives. Without a specific assignment, our kids can share a relaxed view of a book. WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS Police in Oakland, Calif., spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who had barricaded himself inside his home. After firing 10 tear-gas canisters, officers discovered that the man was standing beside them in the police line, shouting, “Please come out and give yourself up.” 3. WHAT WAS PLAN B? An Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidnapped a motorist and forced him to drive to two different automated teller machines, wherein the
kidnapper proceeded to withdraw money from his own bank accounts. 4. THE GETAWAY A man walked into a Kwik Stop in Topeka, Kan., and asked for all the money in the cash drawer. Apparently the take was small, so he tied up the store clerk and worked the counter himself for three hours until police showed up and grabbed him. 5. DID I SAY THAT? Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn’t control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat the words “Give me all your money or I’ll shoot,” a man shouted, “That’s not what I said.” 6. ARE WE COMMUNICATING? A man spoke frantically into the phone, “My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart.”
“Is this her first child?” the doctor asked. “No,” the man shouted. “This is her husband.” 7. NOT THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE SHED In Modesto, Calif., a man was arrested for trying to hold up a Bank of America branch without a weapon. He used a thumb and a finger to simulate a gun. Unfortunately, he failed to keep his hand in his pocket. 8. THE GRAND FINALE Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert an hour east of Bakersfield, Calif., some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t get their brand new 22-foot boat to work properly. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power was applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they crept into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able
