Community celebrates new solar farm in Kings Park

BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM After the Izzo family leased their 26-acre Kings Park property to the Town of Smithtown for a landfill during the 1970s, the place was declared uninhabitable. Today, the site is revered as one of Long Island’s largest solar farms.

The 4-megawatt project was showcased on June 20 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, an event that unexpectedly coincided with New York State’s sweeping new clean energy legislation promising to become carbon neutral by 2050.

“It’s almost like we knew what we were doing,” said Tom Falcone, Long Island Power Authority CEO, who attended the event along with county and town elected officials. The achievement, he said, entailed a cooperative effort. “It took a village, a town, a state and the Izzo family.”

The state’s ambitious new energy plan renders the privately owned Kings Park solar

farm a shining new example of what the future may look like with private landowners and non-developable property transformed to serve a public utilitarian purpose.

“It takes a lot of gambling but, wow, was this a good project,” said Paul Curran, founder of Wappinger Falls-based BQ Energy, a company committed to the sustainable redevelopment of environmentally contaminated sites known as brownfields. “Once you see it, people say it makes so much sense.” He expects the site to inspire additional projects.

Curran first approached the Izzo family with the idea of using their property for a solar site in 2013. RECOM Solar leased the development rights from the family to construct the project.

NextEra Energy Resources, which claims to be the world’s largest supplier of renewable energy took over in December 2018, when the site became operational.

‘Never again’ applies to all people, including migrants at the border I am distraught by the inhumane treatment of migrants at the border. The reports of the conditions in which the migrants are being detained are a violation of human rights, of basic decency and morality. The cruelty of the Trump administration towards asylum seekers flies in the face of the principles we claim to have as a nation.

Last year, I was haunted by the images that began to surface of young children, including infants, being ripped from their parents. As a mother, I know how critically important a sense of safety and security is for the development of children. The policies at these camps, of children not being allowed to touch one another, to be hugged, is deeply damaging to them. The attempts of the Trump administration to take away education and play is intellectually and emotionally detrimental. This is a cruelty that is unfathomable to me.

State passes pivotal energy bill to address global warming

New York lawmakers aim to tackle the climate change issue head on: It passed June 20 a bill that will largely eliminate fossil-fuel emissions by 2050.

The bill, called the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, will require incremental changes to the state’s infrastructure.

By 2030, the state plans to obtain 70 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources, shifting entirely to carbon-free electricity by 2040 and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 85 percent below 1990 levels. Part of the plan includes developing and implementing measures that remove carbon dioxide, a heattrapping gas, from the atmosphere.

New York joins California, Nevada, Hawaii, Washington, New Mexico, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico in committing to clean energy power. The initiative comes in response to the current administration bailing out of the United Nation’s landmark 2015 Paris Agreement to build a low-carbon future and scaling back on many other environmental measures and regulations.

Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), the bill’s original sponsor, said the bill addresses one of the most important issues of our time. He and state senators have been trying to get clean-energy legislation passed for the last four years. Prior to the 2018 elections,

he said, the bill was stuck in the Republican-led millions of dollars to prioritize disadvantaged communities around the state, particularly those senate.

“It made a big difference in getting this [bill] devastated by pollution and climate change.

Englebright stressed it is going to take a collaborative effort to make sure this plan will work.

“It is going to take recognition from people that this is not some made up problem, It is not a fake science,” he said. “We will need to work together to solve this.”

County finds fix for certain wastewater contaminants

BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM “It’s more than a pretty garden,” said Chris Clapp, a marine scientist for The Nature Conservancy. “It’s a biological process that relies on plants, wood chips and microbes to remove nitrogen in wastewater before it flows back into the environment.”

On June 24, County Executive Steve Bellone (D) joined Clapp with a conglomerate of representatives from both government and the private sector at The Nature Conservancy’s Upland Farms Sanctuary in Cold Spring Harbor to unveil a state-of-the-art method for reducing and eliminating nitrogen from wastewater.

The county expects the new system to be a replacement for cesspools and septic systems, which are blamed for the seeping of nitrogen into Long Island waterways, causing red tides, dead zones and closed beaches.

The issue is a serious concern, Bellone said, as he introduced the county’s Deputy Executive Peter Scully, who is spearheading the county’s Reclaim Our Water Initiative and serves as the Suffolk’s water czar. “Anytime a government appoints a water czar, you know you have problems to address.”

Scully, formerly the director for the Long Island region of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, said six other septic alternatives are currently approved.

Long Island is reportedly one of the most densely populated locations in the country without adequate wastewater treatment. Currently, there are 360,000 antiquated cesspools and septic systems. The county expects to set nitrogen reduction targets for watershed areas where replacement holds the most benefit.

The technique, called a vegetated circulating gravel system, is composed of an underground network that essentially connects the drains and toilets of a home or office to plant life and microbial action. It works in two stages to denitrify the wastewater. The first phase discharges wastewater into an underground gravel bed covered with a surprisingly small garden of native plants that takes up nitrogen through its roots. The water is then circulated into an underground box of wood chips that convert the remaining nitrogen into gas, before it’s circulated back to the gravel bed.

Once the water is denitrified, it’s dispersed through a buried leaching field.

The county partnered with the Nature Conservancy to develop and implement the system for its Upland Farms Sanctuary. The sanctuary is located a half-mile from Cold Spring Harbor, where water quality has worsened

during the last 12 years to the point where the state is officially proposing to designate it an impaired water body.

“The Conservancy is proud to stand alongside the county and our partners to celebrate this exciting new system that taps into the power of nature to combat the nitrogen crisis, putting us on a path to cleaner water,” said Nancy Kelley, Long Island chapter director for The Nature Conservancy.

During the experimental phase the system reduced by half the amount of nitrogen discharged from wastewater. A similar technique has been effective at removing up to 90% in other parts of the country. The system’s designers at Stony Brook University’s Center for Clean Water Technology aim to completely remove nitrogen from discharges. The Upland Farms offices and meeting hall system, which encompasses 156 square feet, serves

the equivalent of two to three homes.

Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) said that denitrification efforts work. The Centerport Yacht Club’s beach was closed for seven years due to water quality issues and reopened in 2015 after the Northport sewer plant upgraded to a denitrification system. Improvements to the harbor storm drain discharges, and a public lawn care campaign about curbing the use of fertilizers, also reportedly helped.

The county has reached a critical juncture and beginning July 1, its new sanitary code for septic systems takes effect, which permits only denitrifying technology.

Justin Jobin, who works on environmental projects with the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said that he expects to gain approval for a pilot program to accelerate the vegetated circulating gravel system’s public introduction, which could be approved as soon as this summer. The design can be modified, its developers said, to serve single homes or large businesses. In addition to removing nitrogen, the system can also naturally filter out pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Its impacts on 1,4-dioxane are being studied.

Community plans Nissequogue River regatta Event showcases state parkland and promotes stewardship

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM For the fourth year running, Kings Park students are working to bring the Smithtown community together to raise funds for the upkeep and improvement of Nissequogue River State Park. All residents are invited to participate July 13 in the annual canoe, kayak and paddleboard regatta at the park’s South Marina at 799 Saint Johnland Road in Kings Park.

The Nissequogue River State Park Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the park for future generations, is coordinating the event with students. The event, called Regatta on the River, is sponsored by the Reichert family, owners of the East Northport and Fort Salonga IGA supermarkets, and will feature both a competitive 10-mile race that begins at 9 a.m. and a leisurely five-mile excursion that begins at 9:30 a.m. This year the event includes a barbecue and picnic.

Three co-presidents of the foundation’s student board, Emily Dinan, Caleigh Lynch and Juliana Quigley, have worked together to organize this year’s event. Last year, the regatta event raised a total of more than $2,500. Lynch, a senior at St. Anthony’s High School in Melville, said the student board makes decisions about the regatta for the organization, which instills leadership qualities among board members.

“Knowing that our involvement with the board is making a difference right here in my own community is an amazing feeling,” she said. “It will be amazing to see all of our hard work from January to July go into full effect.”

Dinan, a senior at Kings Park High School, said being on the board allows her and others to give families in the community a fun activity to do and helps them raise money to beautify and help clean up the park.

“We are excited to see how big our event grows each year,” she said. “I love seeing new faces among the familiar ones as they gear up and get ready to go out on the river.”

Dinan said many people have told them they didn’t even know how big the park was or that there was so much you could do. Last year, paddleboarders were included in the regatta for the first time, and the group hopes they can get even more participants this year.

Lynch said the park often gets a bad reputation for being located on the waterfront portion of the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center, stopping people from realizing how beautiful the park is.

“I believe the park is one of Mother Nature’s greatest hits,” she said.

The solar project, which consists of 18,000 solar panels, created 50 jobs, mainly in the construction sector, according to Bryan Garner, NextEra’s director of communications.

NextEra signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with LIPA, which will ultimately result in nearly $800,000 in revenue for Smithtown. That’s $33,000 per year for the first 15 years in payments in lieu of taxes and

$296,000 in tax revenue for the final five years.

The project will offset more than 4,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of removing 800 cars off the road.

Unlike fossil fuel plants, the facility operates silently and requires very little maintenance.

“We check it about four times a year, so it’s maintenance free,” said Aaron Benedict, who monitors the project for NextEra. His cellphone includes an application that remotely monitors the operation 24/7.

“This is all about what good this site can do for years to come,” said Robert Izzo Jr, whose family has owned the property for decades.

PSEG reports that 161 MW of its energy supply is generated from renewable projects, mainly solar panels.

Police Pharmacy robbery arrest

Suffolk County police arrested a man after he allegedly robbed a pharmacy in Smithtown on June 19. John Giunta, 29, entered the Smithtown Prescription Center, located at 260 East Main St., at approximately 9:55 a.m., approached a pharmacist and demanded narcotics. The pharmacist complied and Giunta fled with the proceeds.

Police responded and arrested the Ronkonkoma resident in the rear parking lot of the United Methodist Church on East Main Street a short time later. Major Case Unit detectives charged him with robbery third degree.

Giunta was scheduled to be arraigned at 1st District Court in Central Islip on June 20. A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The Town of Smithtown recently announced the addition of an electric vehicle charging station located in the Town of Smithtown Municipal Lot at Town Hall at 99 West Main St. The level 2 charging station, the purchase of two new Chevrolet Bolts and the two years of free EV charging to the public was made possible thanks to a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Clean Energy Communities Grant with support from the NYSDEC Zero Emissions Vehicle Rebate Program.

Supply, located at 400 West Main St., during the overnight hours between May 29 and 30. The stolen vacuums have a combined value of approximately $7,000.

Police are looking to question a man who was seen canvassing the exterior of the location earlier in the day. The man was described as Hispanic, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall with an average build, dark-colored hair and a beard. When asked by staff why he was at the location, the man said he was looking for a lost bicycle.

The Town of Smithtown Senior Citizens Department has acquired a new minivan to use as a transportation service for those with disabilities who have no other means of transportation. This new minivan, plus the existing bus, is available to serve residents in the township with disabilities who are over the age of 18.

“Think about the average Long Island resident, living in a suburban home … We rely on our automobiles to take us everywhere. Thanks to this service, all adults living with disabilities will have the same means. This service will immediately enhance the quality of life for Smithtown people living with disabilities,” said Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R).

The Senior Citizens Department currently provides low-cost transportation to seniors over the age of 60 for essential services like doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping and bank visits. The addition of a disabilities minivan will

help individuals over the age of 18 to live more independently. The vehicle is intended to make travel to essential services more flexible in transporting residents within the township.

“Transportation can be one of the biggest obstacles for individuals living with disabilities.

We do not want any of our residents to feel like they are cut off from the community. This indispensable service provides accessibility and mobility to all our citizens living with disabilities,” said Councilwoman Lynne Nowick (R).

Residents who wish to utilize this resource are encouraged to contact Michelle Musso at the Office for People with Disabilities at 631360-7642 at least one week in advance of the requested transportation date. The service operates Mondays through Fridays, excluding town holidays. Regular operating hours are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., while summer operating hours are 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“Tom shows them everything,” she said.

Herzog has been doing these clinics for the past two years and hopes people can take advantage of the device at the golf course.

“It gives them an opportunity to go out and play, that’s what they want,” he said.

“Teaching is fun.”

As part of the agreement with the town, the device can only be used on the front nine holes of the course, because Fischer says the back nine can be hilly and steep.

People with mobility issues took part in a free wheelchair-adaptive golf cart clinic at Crab Meadow Golf Course June 26.

The clinic, led by PGA Professional Tom Herzog, showed mobility-challenged golfers how to use a Paramobile, a machine that enables a person to be securely strapped and lifted to a standing position, so they can swing a golf club in a natural stance.

The device was designed for individuals with various neurological and muscular disabilities.

The Long Island Chapter of the Stand Up and Play Foundation donated the device to the Town of Huntington back in 2017 and is available for public use.

Bridget Fischer, Northport resident, took part in the clinic and said the device allows her and others to continue to play a sport they enjoy.

“Tom shows them the grip and swing mechanics,” she said. “You have to have a good core in this machine to keep yourself up right.”

Earlier this week, the Kings Park Central School District was notified by the State Education Department that Kings Park High School has been designated as a Recognition School. The announcement came from NYSED Assistant Commissioner Ira Schwartz. Kings Park High School was recognized for high academic achievement, growth and graduation rate.

Time to RISE

While the U.S. women’s soccer team waits to enter mediations regarding the discrepancy between their pay and the men’s team’s earnings, Suffolk County women, as well as racial and ethnic minority workers, are about to enter a more even playing field when they decide to apply for a new job starting June 30 thanks to a new law.

We say it’s about time.

Historically, women along with racial and ethnic minority workers have earned lower than average wages. Before passing the law, the county Legislature used an April 2018 New York State Department of Labor report that found women in the county earn 78 percent for what their male counterparts earn. The statewide percentage is 87. The same report cited that in New York African American or black women earn 64 percent and Latino or Hispanic women earn 53 percent of what men earn.

The Legislature recently decided to do something about the injustice by creating a local law, called the RISE (Restrict Information Regarding Salary and Earnings) Act, to restrict divulging earnings history during the interview process.

County Executive Steve Bellone (D) signed the legislation into law in November.

This means when a Suffolk County resident searches for a new job, they will not be haunted by their last salary. Now, employers and employment agencies cannot ask for salary history on applications or during interviews.

In addition to women and minority workers being offered less in the past, there are also cases where people have been out of work for a long time — whether due to layoffs, taking care of children or a sick relative — who take the first job they are offered, regardless of pay just to get back on track careerwise.

This can cause problems when they apply for a job and the company asks for their salary history. The job applicant might be offered a salary below the range the employer was originally thinking. The employer may see it as an opportunity to save money, thinking if the applicant got by on their last wage, why would they need much more.

But no more. Now employers have to decide how much they believe a job is worth, then offer that salary. And while it makes sense that there may be a salary range based on experience, it also makes sense to pay people similar pay for doing the same job.

And the law benefits more than women and ethnic and racial minority workers; it even helps those who are leaving a highpaying position. In the past, if someone wanted to travel down a different career path, they may have been willing to accept a lower salary. But a company may not have called them for an interview when they saw how much they made at previous jobs, thinking they wouldn’t take a lower salary.

In the end, the new law may even help the local economy.

With more money in women’s bank accounts, they will have more buying power or the opportunity to escape from dysfunctional relationships and get a place of their own.

Confirmed with a bipartisan, unanimous vote, the Suffolk County Legislature apparently believes the RISE Act will help break the cycle of wage discrimination in the area. We agree, and we say to those who have felt stuck in their financial situation that now is the time to RISE and shine.

Congress should reauthorize 9/11 fund Almost 18 years ago, our nation experienced the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil in the history of our nation, and these many years later, it’s not over.

On Sept. 11, 2001, and in its wake, there were countless heroes who stepped up to the plate without a moment’s hesitation when our country needed them most.

In the face of unconscionable evil, they were the ones who ran in when everyone ran out, who worked 12-hour shifts on the pile for months returning victims to their families, and who refused to bow in the face of fear and helped hold our country together.

In 2011, to help these heroes, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was signed into law, and five years later the Zadroga Act was permanently reauthorized and included $4.6 billion for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

The VCF was established to provide compensation for the victims of 9/11 and their families while continuing to provide compensation for those suffering from

9/11-related illnesses and their loved ones.

However, in February, the special master of the fund issued an alarming report, which stated its funding was insufficient to compensate all claims and the fund would have to make up to 70 percent cuts across the board.

I can vividly recall in years past how so many first responders who had fallen ill were forced to come to our nation’s capital to beg for the benefits they rightfully earned. Now, here we are again, not even four years later with sick and dying 9/11 first responders being forced to travel to Washington, D.C., to beg for the benefits that they have been promised.

One of those heroes was Lou Alvarez, a 9/11 first responder, Long Islander and American patriot. In 2016, just like so many other 9/11 first responders, Lou was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, one of the thousands of cancers now attributed to the inhalation of the toxic air and debris at Ground Zero.

Just two weeks ago, Lou gave the most inspiring speech before the House Judiciary Committee and, immediately afterward, he rushed home for his 69th round of chemo. Unfortunately, when he got home, things didn’t go as expected.

Lou went into hospice vowing to continue fighting until the very end so that other 9/11 first responders don’t have to. He said, “Still here. Still breathing.

Still fighting.”

Lou is an American hero, but his spirit and grit is representative of the thousands of 9/11 first responders who have fallen ill. For them and for our nation, Congress needs to do its job and pass H.R.1327, the Never Forget the Heroes Act, which would fully fund the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

In the aftermath of 9/11, we vowed we’d never forget. Now we must make sure of it.

Imagine your child there The moral imperative does not understand politics. The moral imperative does not know about political parties, religions or even the rule of law. The moral imperative demands that a person or a society do the right thing even when the right thing is hard. And when doing the right thing is not hard — taking care of children is not a hard thing for a government to do, or at least it shouldn’t be — it is unfathomable what the President Donald Trump (R) administration is waiting for.

I do not understand an administration that is moving slowly or not at all as children are sleeping on the floor in unsanitary and unhealthy conditions. If the detention center were an animal shelter, it would be closed down.

Trump has said that the Democrats are responsible for not appropriating the money needed to take care of these children. There is a bill in Congress right now that would provide funds to help take care of these children. Let’s see if

Trump will sign it. However, this situation can’t wait for a bill to be passed.

Why doesn’t Trump sign an executive order, of which he is so fond, and find the money needed? Perhaps one or two less trips to play golf would more than provide the funds needed. He keeps saying the Democrats created this problem, but I guess he has forgotten about his zero-tolerance program from last year. Well, why can’t he fix it? He doesn’t do it because he wants to use these children as political pawns to further his amoral agenda. It has been reported June 25 that most of the children have been moved to tents. I guess that means the problem has been solved?

Anyone of good faith — whether Christians or Muslims or Jews or no religion — who supports Trump and his lack of a moral center should be outraged and realize that they will have to answer for a silence that accepts the mistreatment of these children.

Yes, America needs a reasonable

immigration policy, but this situation is not an immigration problem. It is a moral issue for which we are all responsible if we do not cry out against it. It should not matter if you are a Democrat or a Republican or even apolitical. To know this is wrong is just to be human.

It is time for us — all of us — to take a stand against children sleeping on cement floors, in unsanitary conditions while being constantly hungry. Americans have taken to the streets to protest wars, safeguard civil rights, protect the free media and call out amoral behavior by other countries. Can’t we do the same to help children? It is not an issue that needs political discussion. It is a given, if we are to consider ourselves a moral country.

Of course, if you are looking for a political solution: November 2020 is coming!

Celebrating opportunities for people appreciation

W

e cry and laugh with movie characters, feeling their pain when their fictional lover runs away with the neighbor or laughing with them when they share a joke, slip and fall, or embarrass themselves during a public speech.

Long after we’ve put a book down, the characters join us as we commute back and forth to work. We feel the pain they D. None experienced during of the above World War II when

BY DANIEL DUNAIEF they lost family members or neighbors. We are grateful that the main character who is battling his personal demons somehow survives unimaginable ordeals.

We stare into the faces of the huddled masses from pictures at Ellis Island, many of whom left the only home they’d ever known to start a new life in a place that has become, fortunately for so many of us, the only home we’ve ever known.

We see the bags at the immigrants’ sides, the children in their arms who are our parents and grandparents, and the resolve in the arrivals’ eyes as they wait for their turn to pass through the gates to the New World.

We read about people whose lives touch us so profoundly that we send money through GoFundMe pages. We don’t have any need to ask them whether they drink Coke or Pepsi, whether they’re a Democrat or a Republican, or if they support France or the United States in the Women’s World Cup. We want something better for them.

What about all the people who surround us, who drive next to us on the same roads on the way to and from work, who stand in line with us at the movie theater, the deli or the Department of Motor Vehicles?

The people who share time and place with us are just as deserving of our sympathy, empathy and care, and yet we honk when the light turns green and they don’t go, we become irritated when they don’t understand our lunch order, and we snarl when our co-workers misunderstand an assignment.

I would like to suggest that we spend one day every year, maybe this publication day, June 27, appreciating people. Let’s call it People Appreciation Day. This doesn’t and shouldn’t be a day when we trudge out to get a mass produced card that says, “Hey, I appreciate you.” This could be any level of appreciation we’d like to share.

We could take an extra second to thank the cashier at the supermarket, who asks us for our store card and wants to know if we found everything OK. We can thank her and ask how she’s doing. When she answers, we might react accordingly: “Oh, happy birthday” or “Sorry to hear about your cat” or “I sometimes miss the place where I grew up, too.”

Maybe instead of honking when the light turns green, we can imagine — the way we would if we were looking at the title of a movie or the cover of a book — what the driver inside is feeling, thinking or experiencing. How is that any different from caring about a two-dimensional stranger in a book we’re holding?

The people in our lives aren’t here to entertain or amuse us, but they can elicit our empathy, understanding and appreciation. We can, however, offer them the gift of care and concern.

We can appreciate their efforts to meet their basic needs and their desire to strive for something better for themselves and their children. These other people are dedicated teachers, determined athletes, a third-generation member of the military or a new neighbor from far away whose loneliness we can extinguish. Let’s take the time and put out the effort to appreciate them. When we do, we can benefit from the opportunity for people appreciation to forge a human connection.

Summertime and something to think about

chools are out, or almost out, trees are lush with leaves, people are beginning to wear shorts and sandals, and the temperatures are finally approaching the high 80s.

It seems to have stopped raining.

The lines after dinner at ice cream parlors stretch out the door and down the street. Dogs have their tongues hanging out when being walked.

And it’s light until almost 9 p.m.

Summer, glorious Between summer, has truly you and me arrived.

in still floods my being. This is the time to make a barbecue and invite friends, enjoy the summer sky over some nice port in the long evening, lounge in the backyard, splash at the beach, watch a baseball game, sleep in a bit and read, read, read those books and magazines that have piled up on the bedside table all year long. It’s also the time to sail, swim, play, get lost on long walks and, in so many other ways, rejoice in the outdoors. There is even time to think.

Here is something tantalizing to think about.

A letter published on the website Medium.com Monday, written and signed by a group of 18 billionaires, from 11 families, including financier George Soros, co-founder of Facebook Chris Hughes, Abigail Disney and heirs to the Pritzker fortune, Liesel and Ian Simmons, urged government to tax them at a higher rate.

They called for “a moderate wealth tax on the fortunes of the richest one-tenth of the richest 1 percent of Americans — on us.”

Over the last three decades, the wealth of the top 1 percent grew by $21 trillion. Who can

even visualize such sums? But the wealth of the bottom 50 percent fell by $900 billion — not hard to visualize by comparison because we can see the effects on American lives.

The letter follows a similar declaration by investment guru Warren Buffett in 2011 encouraging greater tax on the richest. He revealed that his effective tax rate was actually lower than that of any other 20 people in his office.

The richest pay 3.2 percent of their wealth in taxes versus 7.2 percent from the bottom 99 percent. President Barack Obama (D) picked up the suggestion at the time and called for a 30 percent tax for that population, dubbing it the “Buffett rule.” Not only was that never enacted, the latest round of tax cuts under President Donald Trump (R) have particularly helped those same richest Americans.

The Monday letter was addressed to all presidential contenders. Elizabeth Warren, U.S. senator from Massachusetts and Democratic hopeful, has proposed a comparable strategy, recommending that those who have $50 million or more in assets, like stocks, bonds, yachts, cars

and art, be subject to a wealth tax. That would include some 75,000 families and raise, in her estimation, $2.75 trillion over the next 10 years.

That money could be put toward better child care, helping with education debt and the opioid and climate crises. Such a tax would strengthen American freedom and democracy and would be patriotic, it is claimed. Surveys show that about seven out of 10 people support this concept.

In 2014 Nick Hanauer, a successful Seattle entrepreneur, wrote a memo to “my fellow zillionaires” in which he advised the following: “[We are] thriving beyond dreams of any plutocrats in history, [while] the rest of the country — the 99.99 percent — is lagging far behind. If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us.”

How is that for some heady stuff to occupy the mind and lessen any lazy guilt as our bodies are stretched out on the lounge?
