The Smithtown library looks at the forgotten war The Korean War is often referred to as the “forgotten war” since there is a general lack of understanding about the conflict and recognition for those who served during it.

Come and remember America’s forgotten war with Salvatore Scarlato, a decorated Korean War veteran and president of

both the central Long Island and New York State chapters of the Korean War Veterans Association. This program is scheduled for Thursday, June 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at The Smithtown Library Main Building.

Councilwoman Lynne Nowick eyes another term Smithtown Councilwoman Lynne Nowick (R) has been serving the public for more than 20 years, and she has no intention of slowing down.

The incumbent is looking for another term on the town board this fall, and said she wants to build on the successes of her two-decade long tenure.

“My heart is in it,” Nowick, a life-long St. James resident said in a phone interview. “I feel I am the best candidate because I have been working on this town for 22 years, and I will continue to work for this town.”

At the Smithtown Republican convention last month however, things did not go according to plan for the GOP town board incumbents, as chairman Bill Ellis led the way for three new challengers to get support from the party over Supervisor Pat Vecchio, Nowick and Councilman Tom McCarthy.

At the meeting Nowick said losing the nomination from the party would not deter her and she would “see them at the primary this September.” She said she preferred not to comment on the party division during the interview, saying she wanted to fo-

cus on her job.

She said her experience working in government for many years is a strong asset for her.

“I have a good rapport and relationships with county officials, as I worked with them for 17 years, and I feel that’s important to be able to work with them,” she said, referring to the years she served as a Suffolk County legislator for the 13th district.

During her tenure as a county official, Nowick said she was able to preserve properties and open space in Smithtown, including areas in Head of the Harbor, St. James and near the Nissequogue River.

She said she was also able to secure funding for a sewer study project in Smithtown, and was instrumental in creating the first family concert series in Suffolk County, which was held in Smithtown.

“That was a shot in the arm for the community,” Nowick said. “It helped the town flourish by bringing families to the downtown area. That is downtown revitalization at its finest.”

Nowick added she was proud of the work she did focusing on keeping young kids safe and healthy.

and possession of salvia, a psychoactive plant. She also worked to get a safety label put on energy drinks to warn consumers

about the health risks, and created a drug take-back program in Smithtown.

“I was always trying to take care of the young people,” she said. “I believe parents aren’t always aware of the dangers.”

In terms of the success she’s had while serving as a town board member, the councilwoman said she’s proud of the town’s financial stability.

“We can brag about the fact that we have the gold standard on bond ratings with a AAA,” she said. “We’ve managed to maintain almost the lowest amount of debt per capita in Suffolk County, and our fund balances are strong and stable.”

She also highlighted the fact that Smithtown residents experienced a tax decrease this year, and there is expected to be no tax increase in 2018.

For the future, Nowick wants to continue to build on the sewer projects for the town, as well as improve infrastructure like the sidewalk project on Lake Avenue in St. James.

Vecchio praised Nowick’s efforts serving the town.

“She has been a diligent and dedicated councilwoman who has complete knowledge of all the issues that confront the town and she is an influential voice in meeting the issues,” he said in an email.

Nesconset resident wins big at sand sculpture contest By victoria espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com In late May, more than 500 participants transformed Tybee Island, Georgia, into a temporary art gallery, created with sculptures made out of sand, and one Nesconset native dominated the scene.

Savannah College of Art and Design student Sabrina Shankar, majoring in production design, was on the team that took home the top prize, the SCAD Landmark Award, for their piece, “Pepe Hall.”

Shankar, 20, answered questions through email about her inspiration, sand sculpture and more.

How do you execute a sand art sculpture? What tools or materials are needed, and how long does it take?

When my partner Ryan Hurley and I decided to create a sand sculpture for SCAD’s Sand Arts Festival, we began planning out the whole process and prepared supplies immediately. The essential tools to creating a perfect sculpture include a bucket for water, a large shovel, a small shovel and sculpting tools.

Fortunately, I have taken SCAD’s ceramics course and had the sculpting tools needed to create fine lines. On the day of the event, Ryan and I split up tasks as one began to get water from the ocean and the other started creating a large mound of sand for the building.

Because Tybee Island’s sand is a little grittier, and the sun was very strong, we needed to add a bucket full of water to every couple of shovels of sand in order to keep the sand wet and sturdy for when we began sculpting.

How did you come up with the plan for the winning sculpture?

Ryan and I spent the morning of the competition carefully looking at the details that are found in architecture of SCAD’s Pepe Hall. We used Google Maps to screen shoot images of all sides of the building from multiple angles to take with us as inspiration.

Both Ryan and I wanted to create a SCAD landmark for the competition. When deciding on a building, we wanted to feature one that’s prevalent at SCAD and also

How and why did you first get interested in sand sculpture?

Ever since high school I have loved to sculpt. However, the first time I really became interested in sand sculpture was my freshman year at SCAD when we had a famous sand sculptor come in and display his work.

I always knew how challenging, timeconsuming and rewarding this type of sculpture was, but seeing his work and hearing him talk about it intrigued me to try it. I later attended one of his workshops where he taught us all different tips and tricks on how to make the sculpture stand out in the crowd.

A few weeks later, I then competed in my first sand arts during freshman year at SCAD, and was fortunate enough to win in the SCAD landmarks category for creating Poetter Hall.

What are the hardest and most enjoyable parts of it for you?

The hardest part of creating a sand sculpture is the hard labor that goes into creating a large base. Besides the countless trips to the ocean gathering water, the shoveling process can be taxing and requires a lot of strength.

The most enjoyable part of creating a sand sculpture is the audience that comes by to check on your work and see how the progress is going. This past year, Ryan and I had an elderly man check up on us during the entire process and he would ask us questions, provide critique and most importantly display enthusiasm throughout the process.

Seeing both SCAD students and the Savannah public cheer us on was a rewarding process.

What was it like to win, how did you feel? What did it mean to you to win for your recreation of an iconic SCAD landmark?

Unfortunately, Ryan and I were unable to attend the winning ceremony due to other engagements, but I remember checking my phone that afternoon and seeing multiple missed calls from a variety of friends. I immediately called one back and she started screaming on the other line a congratulations we had just won SCAD’s Sand Arts Competition. I was so excited and called Ryan to share the good news.

We couldn’t believe it, especially after seeing all of the other talented contestants but were extremely grateful.

Do you want to continue your sand sculpting career after college, and how?

I think it would be amazing to continue sand sculpting after graduating from SCAD, but in a variety of other aspects.

Why should more people start taking an interest in sand sculpture?

I think sand sculpting is a very unique art and although it is very challenging you can always see everyone smiling and having a good time no matter what their sculp-

ture looks like. Events like the SCAD Sand Arts bring back memories of being a child and building a sand castle on the beach.

What lessons have you learned as an art student that helped you prepare?

As a production design major, I have been taught how to best display a space in order to convey the story I wish to tell.

Through sand sculpting, whether it be replicating a building such as Pepe Hall or creating an out-of-the-world creature as a free-form sculpture, we are all trying to convey some sort of story. With every cut into the sand there was a purpose and special attention to detail in order to accurately represent Pepe Hall.

I believe that whether it may be SCAD Sand Arts, SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival, the Savannah Film Festival, the SCAD FASHWKND or one of the many other signature events at SCAD, it is so important to participate and enjoy everything that SCAD is providing to us. These events always provide such a fun and engaging atmosphere and a welcomed break to the everyday studies. I always enjoy seeing all of the talent that SCAD students have that I may not see on a daily basis; not only does it provide inspiration, but it also allows me to meet new individuals for future collaborations.

What advice do you have for future art students?

If I had to provide advice to future freshman, upperclassmen or anyone in general, I would say they shouldn’t be afraid to try something new or give something your best shot even if you are uncertain of the outcome. Sometimes, the best kind of stories come from days when we are uncertain but decide to take a leap of fate and venture into a new path. Winning SCAD’s Sand Arts Competition not once, but twice during my three years has been some of my greatest accomplishments at this university and I would have never succeeded had I not tried.

Police search for man who stole cash from cars in Smithtown

The Commack Fire Department responded to a house fire shortly before 2 a.m. Monday, June 12, on Astor Court.

Firefighters arrived to find five residents, two adults and three children, safely evacuated with flames engulfing the home.

About 50 firefighters battled the blaze and were assisted by the Kings Park, Smithtown, and Hauppauge fire departments.

The East Northport Fire Department provided standby coverage and the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps was on the

scene for EMS support.

The fire was brought under control in approximately a half-hour, under the direction of Commack Fire Chief Rich Myers and Second Assistant Chief Bobby Wilkins.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, and is under investigation by the Town of Smithtown and Commack Fire Marshals.

The home was extensively damaged, and the Red Cross was on the scene to assist the family.

history close at hand The historical significance of Village of the Branch By marianne howard For at least the past fifty years, the historic Village of the Branch has truly epitomized the importance of retaining the collection of historic buildings on Main Street. According to their code, no structure which was built before 1850 can be altered or demolished, inside or out, or be moved without their permission. The Village of the Branch Historic District is a rare surviving example of how a community recognized its own historic value and importance at a time when Long Island was rapidly growing and expanding out of a rural community into sprawling suburbia and tried to make preservation efforts paramount. The stretch of East Main Street on the north side, from the intersection of Route 25A and Route 111 to the east, includes not only buildings on the grounds of the Smithtown Historical Society, but also an assortment of office buildings once private residences.

Take for example The Hallock Inn, 263 East Main Street. Thomas Hallock, prior to 1800, purchased this land parcel and had his small house constructed. It succeeded the Society’s Epenetus Smith Tavern as a halfway and overnight stopping place between Brooklyn and Riverhead, Southold or Sag Harbor. The 15-room, three-story

building in 1828. Between 1832-1868, annual town meetings were held in the inn.

When the inn’s second floor was free of meetings, it was a frequent scene of balls, wedding receptions, plays and other entertainments. The lawns were used for public function such as country fairs. They even hosted a circus in 1820. The Hallock Inn has remarkable architecture. The kitchen contains a beehive oven, and there are five other fireplaces with carved mantels in the home. The third floor ceiling is arched You can see the Greek Revival trim from the exterior. Currently, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The society is appreciative to the historic Village of the Branch, for maintaining this portion of their code, recognizing that there is historic value in this town which illustrates the importance of similar events which took place both across Long Island, and in our country. These buildings should not be moved or moreover destroyed, in sum, they represent the history of Main Street Smithtown from over 250 years ago.

place of Suffolk Lodge No. 20 of the Order of the Masons. Smithtown’s first collection of library books was housed in this same

FEMA-funded storm hardening also continues along the distribution network, with stronger poles, more

wind-resistant wires and automatic switching equipment. Since funding was secured in 2014, this work has improved more than 80 circuits covering more than 270 circuit miles from the Rockaways to Shelter Island.

When completed, the FEMA reliability work will cover 1,025 circuit miles across the service territory.

All this is done so that Long Islanders can operate their air conditioning and pool pumps with confidence when the temperatures creep toward 100 degrees. Janson, who is on the board of the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook, said he believed the members of the Culper spy ring — Tallmadge, Roe, Robert Townsend, Abraham Woodhull, Caleb Brewster and Anna Smith Strong — were worthy of the award as well.

“The difference is the example of their bravery,” Janson said. “They performed their bravery in covert, and they took their secrets to their graves.”

Before unveiling the Washington Spy Trail sign in front of the Brewster House, Janson had the same wish as others who worked on the installation of the signage.

“We hope that many of you drive the trail and learn about these brave men and women, and what they did for our country,” Janson said.

Additional Washington Spy Trail signs include ones located on the westbound side of Route 25A at West Broadway in Port Jefferson, by the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, before the Smithtown Bull in Smithtown and at Lawrence Hill Road in Huntington Station.

Smithtown, Commack standouts represent Suffolk in grand slam challenge

The University of Notre Dame-bound senior, who started at first base for Suffolk County, had an RBI-single that scored Commack’s Peter Theodorellis to get his team on the board first, and later scored on a wild pitch to put Suffolk ahead 2-0 at the end of the first inning en route to a 10-4 win over Nassau in the Blue Chip Prospects Grand Slam Challenge.

The best baseball players from across Long Island all squared off at St. Joseph’s College June 9, where seniors from Shoreham-Wading River, Commack, Smithtown, Northport and Ward Melville, among others, helped take home the all-star game title in front of a packed house.

Morrell said it was a great experience playing under the bright lights with and against the best players on Long Island, even despite it being an exhibition game.

“There’s definitely a competitive edge between the two counties going into the game,” he said. “We had a lot of fun and the energy was awesome throughout the game.”

Rocky Point baseball team’s head coach, Andrew Aschettino, served in the same role for the Suffolk County team. He said part of his message before the game was for the players to embrace the opportunity to represent their families, their schools and the county.

“If you heard them throughout the game, it was pretty cool — there was definitely a pride thing going on,” he said. “I told them before the game, ‘You’re here for a reason and just go do what you guys do.

Enjoy it though. Don’t get caught up in the pressures of it, just enjoy it because you’re one of a select few kids that get to play in this thing every year.’ It was really cool to watch them do their thing.”

The Suffolk squad tacked on another run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Babylon’s Ken Gordon, and two more on a tworun single by Greg Tsouprakos of West Islip in the fifth. Morrell’s Shoreham-Wading River battery-mate Thomas Brady doubled and scored in a two-run sixth inning to extend the lead to 7-0.

“It’s an honor playing with all of these guys,” Brady said. “I played with all of them when we were young. Just to get back on the field with them — catch some of them — it’s an honor. It’s great. I love all of these guys.”

Smithtown East’s Michael Ruggiero and Rocky Point’s James Weisman each pitched a clean inning.

“It was a great experience being able to play for my high school coach one last time,” Weisman said of his unique position.

“My whole life I’ve dreamed of being the player that I am today, and I still want to succeed and do better.”

Aschettino said he was also excited for

the opportunity to take the field with a familiar face one more time.

“It was a pleasure that I got to spend one more game with him, because he played for me for so long,” the coach said of his four-year varsity starter. “[Weisman] was just the greatest kid in the world to coach. He works his butt off everyday, so I was very, very excited that I got to coach him for one more day.”

Shoreham-Wading River outfielder Nick Manesis joined Morrell in the starting lineup in right field for Suffolk, though he struck out in his only two at-bats. Nick Trabacchi of Smithtown West reached on two walks, stole a base and scored a run. He also pitched the seventh inning and allowed the first two hits of the game for Nassau. Outfielders Joe Rosselli, of Ward Melville, and Frank Stola, of Northport, also saw some action. Tsouprakos took home the most valuable player award, and Hauppauge’s Matt Overton was named the offensive player of the game for Suffolk.

Preeclampsia is a disorder which can develop during pregnancy that can be lifethreatening to both the mother and the unborn baby. Promoting economic stimulus plan as pollution solution

We’re sporting success Athletic success was contagious on the North Shore this spring.

We boasted 13 boys lacrosse, 11 baseball, eight boys tennis, 13 girls lacrosse and 11 softball squads in the playoffs this season. Local teams like Comsewogue boys lacrosse, Ward Melville baseball, Ward Melville boys tennis, Smithtown East girls lacrosse and Walt Whitman softball reached the semifinals. Seven of those 56 postseason qualifiers went on to be crowned Suffolk County champions, including the Commack baseball team, which grabbed the program’s first title in 20 years, and Mount Sinai’s softball team, which won its third straight county final.

Ward Melville boys lacrosse and the girls lacrosse teams from Mount Sinai and Middle Country all nabbed Long Island championship titles, and all three won their state semifinal games. The Patriots and Mustangs won state titles. And after the Middle Country Mad Dogs won the program’s first county, Long Island and state semifinal games, the girls narrowly lost in overtime, after the nation’s No. 1 lacrosse recruit and New York’s new all-time leading scorer Jamie Ortega netted the equalizer with just 1:37 left in regulation.

Districts like Mount Sinai, Shoreham-Wading River and Ward Melville have been dominating team and individual sports, creating powerhouse programs. Besides posting playoff teams in nearly every sport, Shoreham-Wading River junior Katherine Lee won a myriad of titles across the track and field season. She became a part of history when she and three other teammates swept the top three spots in the 3,000-meter state qualifier run, and placed second in the state with a new personal best.

Port Jefferson sophomore Shane DeVincenzo placed sixth overall and fifth in the Federation at the state golf tournament. Northport track and field’s 4x800 relay team placed first in the state and Federation finals, and Huntington’s Lawrence Leake placed third in the state track and field finals in the 400 high hurdles. His teammate Kyree Johnson won a state title in the 400 dash and third in the long jump, and led the Blue Devils to win the Federation team title, toppling every public, private and parochial high school in New York.

A load of other talented track and field standouts across our schools placed in the county finals and state qualifier meets. We’ve seen more and more talent across every team and individual sport with each season, and our schools continue to sneak into national rankings, perhaps creating budding dynasties for years to come.

With the end of another successful season, we want to recognize all the hard work and dedication put in by our student-athletes, many of whom excel to a similar level inside the classroom, and their coaches who help lead the way. Every student needs some guidance, and it’s clear guidance from coaches this season helped bring these athletes great success.

To overcome any kind of competition, students spend years learning their chosen sport or sports, practicing skills and developing their physical fitness. It takes a lot of patience and positive thinking to not give up at one loss or the next, and trust that the years of sacrifice will pay off.

We’re proud to have covered those wrapping up their high school careers who have represented our six paper’s various coverage areas with class and pride, and we look forward to seeing what the returners can do next year. Congratulations, and keep up the good work.

Your editorial policy repeats the county’s misinformation that we must protect our waters from nitrogen pollution by replacing our septic systems with these new advanced treatment systems. There is no doubt that nitrogen is a problem in some locations, but these complicated treatment systems in our front yards are not the answer.

Studies have shown that nitrogen from acid rain falling directly on the bays and runoff from the land together with fertilizers are a major component of nitrogen pollution. These expensive septic systems (up to $20,000 installation and $600/yr operation and maintenance) will do nothing to reduce nitrogen from these sources.

The county’s own website touts that these new systems are suitable for construction on small lots near wetland areas “with significant site constraints such as high ground-

water … in coastal areas” (www.

ReclaimOurWater.info). Any additional construction in the watershed will increase nitrogen from runoff regardless of the type of septic system installed. The long-term solution is to limit population density and development in environmentally sensitive areas, not increase it.

The fact that the environmental and editorial community has jumped on board shows what a great PR job the county has done in promoting an economic stimulus package as a pollution solution. Plans are already in the works to require these systems to be installed, not just in sensitive areas, but whenever a septic system has to be pumped or whenever a property is sold. The industry projects that thousands of jobs will be created with millions of dollars coming out of our pockets. This is the underlying reason for the

program — to help plug the $100 million plus hole in the county budget — at taxpayers’ expense.

The grant program only pays about half of the installation cost with the owner having to shell out or take a loan for the additional cost estimated at up to $10,000, not including landscape and legal fees. The new Article 19 of the Sanitary Code also requires that the owners of the new system file deed restrictions against their property that require maintenance contracts be paid in perpetuity and subjects the owner to investigation and penalties for noncompliance.

Anyone thinking of installing these systems should seriously consider the financial and legal ramifications and carefully read all the information on the website www.ReclaimOurWater.info.

Warmed by the words of love for a dog In response Leah Dunaief’s May 25 column “A farewell letter to a beautiful Golden Retriever”: Your wonderful tribute to Teddy brought tears to my eyes. I want you to know how sorry I am for your loss. His paw prints will always be in a special corner of your heart.

We lost our beloved Golden, named Christian, in late 2006. He also was 12 years old. Like Teddy,

he was so special. He had to greet everyone and people would come up to him just to touch him and feel that special love that only a Golden Retriever can give. Like Teddy, Christian also loved the water.

In Harborfront Park in Port Jefferson, there are five small trees along the road across from the Port Jefferson Village Center. It is the children’s park. Under the middle tree is a bronze plaque with

a Golden Retriever etched into it.

Engraved are the words: “Christian Trigony, A Much Loved Golden Retriever.”

We bought him the tree and plaque because we also knew his memory would never die.

Thank you for sharing your love and your memories of Teddy, “a Much Loved Golden Retriever.”

Ironic cruelty on International Children’s Day The 2017 world prize for ironic cruelty may well have occurred on June 1, International Children’s Day. The day’s announcement went largely unrecognized due to news of President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accord.

The report from Save The Children said that for at least 700 million children worldwide, childhood is stolen by “childhood enders” to violence, extreme poverty and “forced displacement,” which is largely due to climate factors and food shortages in developing countries.

Part of Trump’s reasoning for leaving the accord, he said, was that America is “being taken advantage of.” In particular, we had pledged to give $11 billion over several years to improve living conditions in environmentally fragile parts of the developing world. America can no longer afford to do things like this, he said.

Irony Part 1: Such “savings” will result in predictable increases of forced migration, political unrest and death to vulnerable children, which are far more costly and cruel in the

long term.

Irony Part 2: This withdrawal follows the president’s recently proposed health care plan that will provide the wealthiest Americans with hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks. We evidently can afford that.

Irony Part 3: Both of these “deals” are supposed to help “Make America Great Again.”

Can a nation that does not make the needs of children its first priority really ever become great?

f you’re reading this on a cellphone somewhere, please stop. No, seriously. You can read it on your computer or in an actual copy of the paper but, please, stop reading this and look around you.

OK, are you back in your office or at your home?

It’s disturbing how often our cellphones become an escape from the here and now.

I get it: We’re waiting in line to order a hamburger and we want to do something, so we

and we can’t be bothered to pay attention to our surroundings.

I was recently driving through town and noticed a woman walking a large, chocolate Labrador along the sidewalk.

His rear legs were pointed out as he walked. As I drove by, I noticed that the woman held the leash on her wrist as she was completely absorbed in her cellphone. Seconds later, the dog relieved himself on the sidewalk while trying to keep up with his oblivious owner. The dog looked uncomfortable as he tried to multitask.

I realize dogs are an enormous responsibility and that every time someone walks a dog, that person may not feel the urge to dedicate his or her complete attention to a conversation with the family pet.

“Hey, Tigger, look at that squirrel over there. Oh, wow, there’s a bunny.

Do you see the bunny? Oh, wait, there are two bunnies.”

“What do you smell, Fifi? Was there another dog here a few hours ago and

did he leave you a little scent present?”

We don’t have to connect with our pets every moment of every day. But wouldn’t it be nice if we were able to pay them some attention while we were out walking them? After all, how often do they come over to us when we’ve had a tough day, or give us their paw—or offer us companionship?

Everywhere we go, we have the opportunity to tune out the world around us and surf our way to somewhere else.

It’s thrilling to travel halfway around the world and send pictures instantly of a magnificent sunset, or the Eiffel Tower or a three-toed sloth.

We can be connected to almost anyone almost anytime.

That shouldn’t give us license to disconnect from the people and the pets around us. It’s the economic concept of opportunity cost applied to our attention. The opportunity cost of paying attention to what’s on our phone is that we ignore our surroundings.

Remember those public service

announcements which said, “It’s 10 o’clock, do you know where your children are?” Maybe we should have messages that pop up on our phone suggesting that “It’s 6 o’clock, do you know where you are,” or maybe, “It’s 6 o’clock, pick up your head and check out the here and now (or H&N).”

Maybe we should also develop an H&N logo we can put on clothing or notebooks. It can even become a verbal reminder to our companions.

“Class,” a teacher might say as she noticed her students taking furtive glances at their phones, “H&N, right?

Let’s learn the material now, while you’re here.”

H&N may be a way of encouraging us to be where our bodies are at the moment, and not where the internet has taken us.

Dogs, meanwhile, shouldn’t have to multitask while they’re relieving themselves. If Fluffy could talk, she might say, “For goodness’ sake, H&N, I need a moment here.”

lmost everyone likes movies. But have you ever fantasized about making a movie? Now I’m not talking about a home movie of the kids swimming or starring in a play.

I mean the big stuff, with lights, camera, action, Hollywood director’s chair, firsttier actors and bullhorn. Well, our newspapers are now in the filmmaking business, and it was history that made us do it.

History, particularly our loBy Leah S. Dunaief cal history about the Revolutionary War - the battle of Long Island, the Battle of Setauket, Nathan Hale and the Setauket Spies are as exciting to read as any stories today. In fact, they are remarkably relevant, as aspects of the Constitution are regularly part of our political discussions today. For what were the Patriots fighting, putting their lives and possessions on the line, bleeding and dying? And what are we doing

with that heritage?

History makes for great storytelling, as the producers of “TURN” on AMC discovered over the last four years. Their version of history was inspired by fact but strung together by fiction. So on the anniversary of the Setauket Spy Ring last year, we filmed a dramatic narrative of the Culper Spies wholly based on fact.

To our great delight, that short film, which is on our website and YouTube, Facebook and other places, won first prize from the New York Press Association for video made by a newspaper.

Encouraged by our success and entranced by the many triumphant and also heart-wrenching stories that happened right here on Long Island some 240 years ago, we are making a full-length film this year, and we begin shooting locally this weekend. This time we are going all the way, with a cast of professional producers, directors, actors and first-rate equipment. The set is a work of art in itself, a recreation of the fort in the Battle of Long Island in Brooklyn Heights. We have 135 re-enactors coming from distant parts — Saratoga, New York; members of our own Long Island Third New York regiment; Murrysville, Pennsylvania; and Fair-

field, Connecticut — to stage the battle that almost lost the Revolutionary War before it even truly began. They will be carrying authentic muskets, shooting gunpowder, spilling blood and gore profusely (thanks to our famous special effects person) and otherwise re-creating history. Best of all about this film, we are delving into the lives and personalities of the historic figures whose actions made victory possible. Be assured that we are characterizing them authentically, both colonists and British, fleshing out what details have come down to us from historians and corroborated by our local historical societies.

Several local organizations, institutions and residents are helping to support and underwrite this ambitious production: The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, the Three Village Historical Society, The State University at Stony Brook, the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA), Theatre Three and the law firm of Glynn Mercep & Purcell.

Some support is not so local, perhaps including the Fraunces Tavern Museum in New York City and the Nathan Hale Homestead Museum in Coventry, Connecticut. Many places have indicated their interest in showing the

For example, the SherwoodJayne Farm, where some of the action takes place, has original planking from Founding Spy Benjamin Tallmadge’s home, the Brewster House was a tavern and home of a cousin of fellow Culper Spy, Caleb Brewster, historic Benner’s Farm where we are doing some of the filming, comes down to us over the centuries, and the 1709 Thompson House, home of a local doctor, is one the beautiful preservations of the WMHO. And by the way, the Caroline Church on the Green in Setauket has a musket ball lodged in its steeple.

History is the glue that holds a community together, and our particular history is the platform on which our nation was built.
