Carousel operator allegedly inappropriately touches child

Father’s Day June 16th

Suffolk County Police have arrested the operator of a carousel ride for inappropriately touching a child on a ride at a mall in Lake Grove. A 7-year-old female was riding on the carousel at the Dreamland Amusements carnival at the Smith Haven Mall on June 5 at approximately 7 p.m. when she was inappropriately touched by the operator, Louis Shelton.

Detectives charged Shelton, 50, of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania with sexual abuse 1st degree and endangering the welfare of a child. He was scheduled to be arraigned at 1st District court in Central Islip June 5. Detectives are asking anyone with information or who believes they may be a victim to call the Special Victims Section at 631Mugshot of Louis Shelton. 852-6184.

Sewer projects matter

County’s Deputy Executive Peter Scully explains The New York State legislature approved an alienation bill that will enable the Town of Smithtown to proceed with its sewer projects. Many people are clueless about what a parkland bill has to do with clean water, sewer projects and economic development. Suffolk Deputy County Executive Peter Scully, the county’s environmental expert, explains: Sewer systems are designed to treat wastewater to meet stringent discharge standards put in place by the state to protect public health and the environment, pursuant to authority granted to the state by the federal government under the Clean Water Act. In the absence of sewers, projects must comply with Suffolk County Sanitary Code Article 6 density requirements for unsewered areas. These rules were established by the Board of Health to ensure that groundwater and drinking water standards are not violated, and they severely limit

the volume of sanitary design flow/untreated wastewater that can be discharged to groundwater in areas without sewers, especially in areas with relatively small lots. This means that many parcels cannot accommodate various uses, such as restaurants and accessory apartments. This is a significant problem in downtown areas like the Kings Park Business District, where those uses are otherwise supported by the community, local government planners, and property owners. In some downtown areas, restaurants are severely limited in the number of tables and seats they can have. Some actually serve their customers on paper plates with disposable utensils to avoid the need to wash dishes in order to reduce wastewater. This practice adds to the solid waste problem adding the disposable products to the waste stream. Sewering solves this problem by adequately treating wastewater, allowing businesses to expand.

Town of Smithtown plans launch of new website

By the end of the month, the Town of Smithtown is hoping residents will be able to experience a more user-friendly town website. Beginning on June 24, the town will launch the new website after a planning process that has been underway since December 2018. Led by IT department director Ken Burke with creative support from town spokesperson Nicole Garguilo, the new website, developed by Civic Plus, is planned to feature “mobile-friendly capability,” along with online permits and licenses, a community help center and a new blog feature which the town plans to use to notify the public on pressing topics such as road construction and conditions, new development and revitalization time lines. The site is part of the administration’s initiative to increase public awareness, transparency and make access to services from the touch of a screen, according to a press release. “This is an exciting moment for the town,” said Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R). “The modern website makes information much easier to access and it’s visually appealing. The work that went into updating such an important platform took six months of planning, preparing and information gathering. I want to commend the director of IT, Ken Burke and his team for a fantastic job … I am eager to use our new website and I hope the residents find it a refreshing and helpful resource.” The process for creating the new website included a public survey period where residents were encouraged to give input on the site as to

what features they would like to see. The survey helped to identify the areas of interest and the departments most populated by residents in addition to assembling suggestions for a more user-friendly website. The homepage now features a Citizen Help Center, showing the most popular search requests. These items include information on paying taxes online, youth services, town board meeting agendas as well as minutes and live streaming. A more comprehensive town calendar, news and announcements and a comprehensive social media guide is also featured on the homepage in what town officials said will be a more visually appealing structure. State D-Day vets share war stories for 75th anniversary of Normandy invasion BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Few D-Day veterans are alive today, but you can find three of them at Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University, where an award ceremony was held June 6 in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day and Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious operation in military history. One hundred World War II veterans were presented with the Governor’s Proclamation for the occasion, while Phillip DiMarco and Frank DePergola were decorated with the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross and Charles Cino was decorated with the New York State Medal for Merit. All three men participated in the Normandy invasion. Ninety-seven-year-old DiMarco was among the first wave of soldiers to storm the beach. “I’m just grateful to have survived,” he said. Two-thirds of his fellow troopers perished in the first 30 minutes of battle, according to information provided by the state. DiMarco’s group suffered from wounds, hunger, exhaustion and trench foot and survived on green apples and stagnant water doped with halazone tablets, a chlorine-based water purifier. “Our World War II heroes and heroines who came of age during the Great Depression, gave new meaning to the words, duty, service, sacrifice, courage and honor,” said Fred Sganga, executive director of the veterans home. “They answered the call to save the world from the two most powerful and ruthless military machines ever assembled, instruments of conquest in the hands of fascist maniacs.” War veterans often are understandably reluctant to talk about their horrific war experiences — it’s clearly too painful to relive. At their advanced ages, speaking also requires tremendous effort. Their stories live on through oral history and past memorials. But these men have stories to share from which history can be garnered. After 75 years, their summaries of what happened are often succinct and to the point. “There was this man who didn’t like Jews, and we got him,” 96-year-old DePergola said. DePergola was part of D-Day plus 10, meaning his troop arrived 10 days after the initial invasion. He was one of only four people to survive the war out of a platoon of 20, his daughter Jean Pulizzi said. In his campaign in Germany and Poland, DePergola encountered what they thought were abandoned buildings, only to discover upon entering about 30 captives: Jews, Catholics and Muslims. It was essentially a concentration camp. The stench inside, he said, was intense and unforgettable. The people, he said, were emaciated and wore black and white striped uniforms. “They were glad to see us,” DePergola said.

While on assignment from headquarters to retrieve maps, DePergola encountered two German soldiers in the woods in Metz, France. He took them captive with a German Luger pistol he had taken off another German officer earlier, since he forgot his issued rifle at headquarters, and returned to base with the captive soldiers. For this, he was awarded a Bronze Star, a military badge of heroism. For Thursday’s ceremony, DePergola insisted on wearing his favorite cap, which bears the Purple Heart badge, an emblem that recognizes war injuries. DePergola was shot in the knee during battle, but back then, he said, you remained on active duty. Cino was 18 years old when he stormed the Normandy beaches. He was responsible for transporting under the cover of darkness thousands of troops in a landing ship tank, or LST, an amphibious boat capable of landing on shore carrying tanks, cargo and troops. Cino, when he heard it was the 75th anniversary of D-Day nodded, shrugged his shoulders and shook his head. He could utter only one full sentence, “I was there.” Then he closed his eyes. Both DePergola and DiMarco, in addition to their experience at Normandy, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive of World War II during the harsh winter in 1945. The D-Day ceremony included color guards and live musicians, who sang patriotic tunes and

played the bugle. About half of the veterans in attendance were in wheelchairs, and despite their limitations, tapped their toes to the music. Many were able to salute the flag. Some veterans wiped tears from their eyes, particularly when the room

sang the lyrics to “God Bless America.” During World War II, 900,000 New Yorkers went to the battlefield; 43,000 did not come home. The nation’s largest population of World War II vets live at Long Island State Veterans Home.

Passed alienation bill could finally allow Kings Park sewers For more than a year, Town of Smithtown officials have been biting their nails in anticipation of one single bill, an alienation of a small patch of parkland in Kings Park. This could mean everything for Smithtown in its attempts to build sewers in the North Shore hamlet. “This might seem like a small piece of legislation to some, but it’s everything for our community, paving the way to clean drinking water, added protections for our environment and vital for downtown revitalization,” said Town Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R). “To all who advocated for our quaint town, lobbying in Albany, writing letters and to the many elected leaders who stood up in support of this bill, we are truly a grateful township.” The site in question is a small piece of land is a 11,000 square feet parcel in front of the town’s Department of Parks, Buildings and Grounds facility located at 110 E. Main St. in Kings Park. The site was zoned as parkland, and so it required an alienation bill from the New York State Legislature. While in most cases such a bill is a quick pass, last legislative session

ground to a halt due to partisan wrangling. The bill was passed in the Assembly but was never even brought to the floor of the Senate. The missing bill has ground the project to a halt for close to a year until time came for the current legislative session. Smithtown officials thanked the bill’s sponsor in the Senate State Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) and Sen. James Gaughran (D-Northport). They also thanked Assemblymen Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) and Assemblyman Fred Thiele (D-Sag Harbor). They also thanked the multitudes of Kings Park civic groups and residents who sent letters and lobbied in the Legislature for the passage of this bill. The bill was part of the town’s plans to use $40 million in funds allocated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to create sewers in Kings Park. “The lack of sewers has prevented growth in too many of our downtowns, but today we came one step closer to unleashing the true economic potential of the Kings Park community,” said County Executive Steve Bellone (D). — compiled by Kyle Barr

Family pub celebrates 50 years BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Old Street Pub, Smithtown’s iconic restaurant and bar, opened its doors 50 years ago, and it’s been serving generations of loyal Smithtown customers ever since. So, what’s been the secret to their success? “We do have the best burgers around,” said Laura Lombardi, who owns the restaurant with her parents Nancy and Frank Pizzimenti, and her brother Frank Jr. “We use only fresh ingredients — nothing frozen — and our brioche buns, which we get from Alpine Bakery, are baked daily,” Pizzimenti Jr. added. Old Street is also famous for their cheese and crackers “Old Street” way, marinated steak sandwich, French onion soup and Caesar salad. With a large menu of burgers, steaks, chicken, appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, seafood and pasta, the restaurant offers something for everybody. The recipe for success, though, for this familyrun business also includes individual service. “We are told on a daily basis by our customers that we make everyone feel comfortable,” said Lombardi. “A lot of our customers call Old Street ‘home’ — we couldn’t ask for a better compliment.” That homey atmosphere has been a tradition that has inspired not only loyal customers, but also the employees. Joseph LaRock, chef, bartender and manager, has been a mainstay at the restaurant for 32 years. Joanne Gregory, a bartender, has been there for 13 years.

As for Pizzimenti Jr., he started working at the restaurant as a dishwasher in 1986, at age 17. He climbed the ranks and learned the business. Ten years later, he got his family involved when the restaurant’s longtime owners, the Atamanchuk family, decided to sell the restaurant. When the Old Street Pub first opened in 1968, a few things were different. Namely, the restaurant was originally called Gold Street Pub. When the “G” fell off their sign about a year later, the Atamanchuk family decided to go with it. “Fifty years ago, Old Street was busy day and night, seven days a week as there were only two other restaurants in town,” Pizzimenti said. “Now we have to work even harder to get people into our establishment as there are so many other restaurants to choose from in the area.” The restaurant once had extremely busy corporate lunches, which included porterhouse steaks, martinis and desserts. With the recession in the early 2000s, their lunch crowd shrank drastically. “That was probably the biggest obstacle we had to overcome,” Lombardi said. “Other than working with family.” Approximately 10 years ago, the restaurant started offering weekly specials. “We like to include seasonal menu items and use local products in our specials,” she said. Charlie Reichert, the owner of the grocery store chain IGA, humbly smiled in the background as his $226,642.68 check was presented June 11 to the Smithtown Historical Society for the restoration of the Obadiah Smith House, the first home in Kings Park. The donation, made on behalf of the Charles and Helen Reichert Family Foundation, is the largest in the historical society’s history, according to Priya Kapoor, the historical society’s executive director. Kapoor said that all her “hopes and wishes” for the house came true with the donation. “I am so humbled by your generosity,” she said to Reichert during the presentation. When asked why he felt compelled to donate, Reichert said that he felt it was important for children in the town to be educated about America, which he feels is lacking. “Kids learn so much about world history, Europe and the Greeks, but if you asked them who their local representative is, they probably would not be able to tell you,” he said. “But shouldn’t we save this building and allow people to see how people lived in those days? That’s the biggest part of education.” Education will indeed be at the forefront of the mission for the house, as Kings Park School

District Superintendent Timothy Eagen said that he anticipates the house will be used for annual school field trips once the renovations are completed. “It’s a wonderful teaching tool,” Eagen said. He references the house to students as “the house in Kings Park that was built before George Washington was even born.” Town of Smithtown historian Brad Harris said they need to improve access to the building, which is currently available only through a back ramp and a set of stairs that are hard to climb. He also said the shingles on the outside need replacement. According to renovation plans for the house, the society plans to “reinterpret the interior” to use it for display and interpretive purposes. “People pass this house all the time and don’t know it’s here. We want to change that,” Harris stated. First built by its namesake, Obadiah Smith, the grandson of town founder Richard Smythe, the house was owned by the Smith family for 232 years. In 1940, it was sold to Benjamin and Lillian Harrison, who were persuaded not to demolish it and ultimately sold it to the Historical Society in 1960. Renovations were made from 1962 to 1980, and maintenance is ongoing. The building is currently occupied by renters who work for the society and care for the house in exchange for lower rent.

Gail Hessel wrote a book about the history of the house and calls it a rare find: an intact first period colonial home first built around 1708 and the first house to be built on the west side of the Nissequogue River. She refers to the home as “more than just an old house. It is Kings Park’s beginning.” Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) was also grateful to Reichert for his commitment to building a sense of community and preserving local history. “I have never met a man of such honor and integrity,” he said. “A person like Charlie comes along once in a lifetime.” Kenneth Donato, the vice president of the Society’s board of trustees, offered his thanks on behalf of the board, calling the renovations “much needed.” Reichert’s check covers the exact estimate of the renovations that need to be done. Work is scheduled to begin in two weeks and completed in six months, since Reichert requested to have it completed as soon as possible. While most of the houses owned by the historical society have been updated, the Obadiah Smith house is kept exactly as it was, giving visitors a direct look into the past after an architect found that the original framing of the house was still intact in the 1970s. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Once you walk through the main entrance, you can enter either the dining room to the left or the pub to the right. The same fresh food can be ordered on either side, only the atmosphere differs slightly. The dining room seats 75 people and is decorated with white tablecloths. It appeals to families, but is also known to be a good choice for people on dates or catered affairs. The wood-paneled pub includes barstool seating and a large area with upholstered booths. Old Street serves thousands of people monthly. Some patrons admit that the restaurant’s attraction is simply its close proximity to their homes. But the family’s commitment to their loyal customers is undeniable. “You have to be extremely passionate and hardworking,” Lombardi said. “You make a lot of sacrifices working nights and weekends. You are constantly away from your family, and dealing with daily deadlines, and you never know on a daily basis how many people will be walking through the door, but you always have to be ready.” The restaurant business is clearly a tough business, but things have fallen into place for Old Street, either through intentional planning or in case of the name by mere happenstance. “We’re not perfect,” said Pizzimenti Jr. “But we try.”

It was a royal affair to remember as the second-grade classes at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated their Fairy Tale Ball June 7. Dressed in their ﬁnest royal threads, the students walked into the event to “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss. Together, the classes welcomed attendees by singing “Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast.” After a dance and poem, each class took to the stage to show off their fairy tale knowledge. Mrs. Rhode’s class recited “The Princess and the Pea,” while Mrs. Joyce and Mrs. Fenster’s class performed “The Three Little Pigs.” “Little Red Riding Hood” was recited by Mrs. DiLorenzo’s class and Mrs. Franz’s class performed “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.” The ball continued back in the classrooms, where attendees were invited to share in the celebration with the royalty.

Math wiz wins ﬁrst in national competition

David Rubin, an eighth-grader at Accompsett Middle School, was recently awarded ﬁrst place in the nation and ﬁrst place in New York State in the Math Kangaroo competition, facilitated by the Roslyn Academic Programs Center. Around 30,000 students participate in the U.S., along with more than six million participants worldwide. The competition is a multiple choice test to be solved within 75 minutes. There are 12 levels of participation, corresponding to school grade levels. The objective is to encourage children and teenagers to master mathematical skills.

The Town of Smithtown is seeking an experienced, animal care professional to administer the daily operation of its Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. This is a department-head level position that reports directly to the Town Board. The applicant must demonstrate an understanding and experience in facilities management and the ability to manage an allocated budget of $880,000 annually; Directs a staff of 4 Kennel Attendants and 4 Animal Control Officers in the routine maintenance and wellbeing of the Shelter clients and operations; Maintains an established and aggressive Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program throughout the 55 square miles of Town of Smithtownâ€™s jurisdiction; works with the Townâ€™s Public Information Officer, community and volunteer groups to publicize the Adoption Center via social media, fairs and other suitable public venues; Maintains standard operating procedures and submits reports on all phases of Animal Shelter operations to the appropriate regulatory agencies and the Town Board; establishes and sustains effective working relationships with the general public, surrounding municipal shelters, and bona fide not for profit rescue groups. Minimum requirements: Veterinarian Technician license, with four (4) years of paid experience in the care and handling of animals in an institutional setting, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or Associates Degree in Animal Care or related field, and experience as described above; or Graduation from HS with six (6) years of experience as described above; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Celebrating Father’s Day Rita Egan — Editor

On occasions like Father’s Day, my thoughts turn not only to my dad, but also to his parents and my uncles. My father passed away in 2004, and I always picture him reunited with his parents. Ten years ago, his brother, my Uncle John, died and a few years later my Uncle Jimmy. I often wonder if, after death, one gets to hang out with those they knew on Earth. I’d like to think they are talking about the old days in the Bronx and Astoria, hopefully with a few cold beers on hand. Most of all, I always hope that my grandparents know that my cousins and I benefited from their sacrifices — leaving Ireland when they were young adults to seek a better life. I also hope my father and uncles know how much they have influenced me and my cousins. For this, I carry them all in my heart. Happy Father’s Day in heaven to all of them.

I didn’t know what to say to you the night you came home after learning your mother had passed away. To be perfectly honest, she was never close to me, and it was hard for me to place my emotions, but I knew you were doing your best to deal with the shock and the grief. I saw you hop on a plane the very next morning after working nine hours the day before. I didn’t know how to say I’m sorry you went through that, and I know when I spoke to you on the phone, I must have sounded close to a narwhal trying to approximate human emotion. But I saw how you were when you came back. You caught up with your sister. You had a new plan, and though you were leaving me to move into her old house, you could now say you were moving on. You need to know how proud I am that you’re my dad.

On Father’s Day, I would like to highlight two father figures in my life growing up. One was my grandfather and the other my uncle. Both men were instrumental in my upbringing, and as a young man, they were individuals to whom I definitely looked up. I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve been able to have with them as a kid, whether it’s going to my first Yankee game or hours of playing catch in the backyard. My grandfather unfortunately passed away in 2012, but the lessons he taught me remain. His guidance over the years has molded me into the man I am today. The same could be said for my uncle, as he has always been there for me and continues to be. I’ve been lucky to have these two great men in my life. I want to thank them for everything — it has meant so much to me.

Every time I turn on the car or reflect on the education I received, I have my dad to thank. The son of a mechanic and restaurant waitress, he fought to pull himself through college, working 80-hour weeks at Howard Johnson’s and attending classes at community college after working the graveyard shift, funded by his own pocket. A successful public servant, he has fueled my passion for politics, philosophy and sports my entire life. This Father’s Day, I will probably be debating one of these topics with Dad, who taught me to have an opinion on and to question everything.

A son’s thank you to his dad on Father’s Day BY JIM SOVIERO DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM My father, Salvatore (Sam) Soviero, was a loving, devoted husband, father and son. A robust, upbeat man, born in 1914 to Italian immigrants Vincenzo and Louise Soviero, Dad’s life by today’s standards was a tough one. Beginning at a very young age, he caddied, worked construction, ground the grapes for wine and wound up boxing to “put money on the table.” Given his extraordinary success as an adult, Dad rightly figured it would be smart to raise his son in pretty much the same way he was raised. Dramatic global changes notwithstanding, Salvatore would follow two basic principles: he’d set a good example and enforce firm limits. Sam lived an exemplary life. He was a man of great integrity who worked tirelessly to support his family. One of his most poignant lessons on “doing the right thing” came while he and I were going through some of his old fight posters. Sammy was a very good light heavyweight who had trained at Stillman’s Gym with top fighters of the day. Pointing to one opponent, Dad said, “That guy cost me a shot at a big fight.” When I mentioned not recalling him losing to “that guy,” my father looked down, before quietly saying, “I didn’t.” At his beloved bride Dorothy’s insistence, and during the height of the Depression, Sal became a welder. After my older sister was born, he’d make extra money by working nights and clamming during the day. When we grew out of our tiny two-bedroom bungalow in Huntington Station, he and his brother Joe began dismantling one of Grandpa’s old houses. Over the course of several years, that brick and timber was used to build our family a beautiful, spacious Cape Cod in Halesite. Given that kind of legacy, when Dad interrupted what looked to be this 14-year-old’s summer fun at the beach

with the news I’d begin caddying at the Crescent Club — and putting my earnings on the table — it seemed natural, even flattering. But while trying to follow Dad’s best life lessons was important, following his rules proved to be equally important. One of the most difficult but critical decisions for parents is to judge when it’s necessary to cause their children short-term pain, in exchange for what Mom and Dad hope will be long-term benefits. My father had uncanny commonsense instincts that led him to set perfectly timed restraints on yours truly. I, like virtually every 16-year-old boy, couldn’t wait to get my driver’s license. Dad, like most parents of a 16-year-old, knew the inherent risks. He responded proactively. My first moving

violation meant Salvatore took my license for six months. An accident that was my fault cost me the car for a year. Some disciplined teenage driving meant I’d lose neither the car nor my life. Around the same time, over roughly a two-year period, four classmates died in horrific auto accidents, devastating the lives of their families and friends. Whether leading by example or setting firm limits, having Salvatore Soviero for my father was one of the greatest blessings any son could ever have asked for. Thanks for everything, Dad. Jim Soviero resides in East Setauket and is a former teacher in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District who renovated and built houses parttime just like his father.

am in the news business. I also write columns. Today, I’d like to conﬂate the two, tackling the ubiquitous topic of “fake news.” Don’t run away, ﬁguratively speaking! I’m not going to write about politics or politicians. I’m going to share fake news from my world. 10. I am a Yankees fan. What makes that fake? It’s accurate, but it’s also fake because I’ve always been a Yankees fan. While D. It’s not fake per se, but also not news and that’s what makes it fake news. 9. I enjoy the time my kids are away.

What makes that fake? The fake element to this is that I enjoy the time they’re home, so I don’t exclusively enjoy the time they’re away. I may have smiled at and with my wife and, yes, I’ve found myself laughing out loud now and then for no particular reason in public, knowing that no one will glare at me, but it’s fake news to suggest I only enjoy this time. 8. I reveled in the movie “Rocketman.” What makes that fake? While the movie was compelling and it offered details about superstar singer Sir Elton John’s childhood, it was a look behind the curtain at his early pain. I sympathized with him as he dealt with family challenges and personal demons, but I can’t say that I reveled in the biopic. I felt moved by his struggles and I appreciate how much he had to overcome to live the balanced life that he seems to have now. The gift of his musical genius may have been enough for the world to appreciate him, but not to give him what he wanted or needed when he was younger. 7. I have a wonderful dog. What makes that fake? My dog has wonderful moments, but I wouldn’t characterize him as

wonderful. He needs training, chews on furniture, jumps on people and barks at things I can’t see, which isn’t so wonderful when I’m conducting interviews with people in other states or when I’m in the middle of a delicate peace negotiation between children who don’t seem to have missed each other all that much when they were apart. 6. I detest logic. What makes that fake? I enjoy logic. It follows rules and patterns. It only appears that I detest logic in this column because I’m trying to make a point about fake news. 5. I’m worried about the Earth. What makes that fake? I’m not just worried about the land: I’m also concerned about the air, the water, biodiversity and a host of other limited resources. 4. I use real words. What makes that fake? People who rely on a computer spellchecker will ﬁnd numerous words that appear to be incorrect or that are underlined in red in my science columns. Words like nanomaterials, which are super small structures that hold out hope for future technologies such as medical

devices or sensors, don’t register at all. If you asked a spellchecker, my columns are rife with fake words. 3. I use fake words. What makes that fake? I love the double negative element to this. It’s fake to say I use fake words, because I also use real words. 2. I only use small words. What makes that fake? I categorically refute the notion that I only use minuscule words. Check out the word “ubiquitous” at the top of this column. 1. I always lie. What makes that fake? If I always lied, that would make the confession true, which would mean I don’t always lie, which would make the statement fake. The ﬂexible and logic-challenged fake news has become a tool to dismiss information, opinions and realities that people ﬁnd disagreeable. It provides a convenient way to ignore news that may have more than a kernel of truth to it.

The best advice I have ever been given

hat’s the best advice you’ve ever received? I recently asked that question of staffers at the news media ofﬁce, and this is what they answered. I’ve grouped the responses by department, wondering if there was a common thread that ran through their common work. Answer: There wasn’t, at least not one that I could see. You judge. The Sales Department “Go to college.” I also asked this person if that advice had changed her life. “Yes, it was a positive thing for my future. whatever seems bad now.” Right around then, I started to ask the source of the advice. “My mother,” she explained. “One day, when I was about 12, my mother and I were disagreeing. ‘You need to remember the world does not revolve around you.’ That thought helped me be a much less self-centered person. I became more aware that what was going on around me was often more important.” “Never look back or to the future. Yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not yet come. Live for today. That came from my Aunt Doris.” “If at ﬁrst you don’t succeed, don’t give up. That came from my mother and was especially true for my dancing. Another is: Always trust your gut. Go with it if something doesn’t feel right.” The Business Department “See the humor in things. It’s only just recently that I have begun to see that and be on the positive side of things. That has made me a happier person since I turned 50.” I forgot to ask who told her that. “Expect the unexpected. That may sound pessimistic but it has made me ready to cope. That advice comes from life’s experiences.” “Treat others as you want to be treated. That
