Three arrested at sobriety checkpoint

The Suffolk County Police Department Highway Patrol Bureau, assisted by the New York State Police, arrested three people during an overnight sobriety checkpoint in Hauppauge on May 25.

Police officers from the SCPD Highway Patrol Bureau, assisted by New York State Troopers, conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Route 347 at Mt. Pleasant Road from 11:25 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Saturday. The checkpoint was part of ongoing Memorial Day weekend enforcement operations for the prevention of

injuries and fatalities associated with driving while ability impaired by alcohol and drugs.

A total of 815 vehicles went through the checkpoint.

Catherine Smith, 34, of Ronkonkoma, David Corado, 36, of Nesconset were charged with driving while intoxicated. Additionally, Justin Balzarano, 23, of Port Jefferson Station was arrested for driving while ability impaired by drugs.

All were be arraigned at 1st District Court in Central Islip on May 25.

SBU’s Stanley named new Michigan State University president

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Less than a week after Stony Brook University’s commencement ceremony, the school’s president will also be moving on.

On May 28, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees announced that SBU President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. will take on the role of president at MSU at a special meeting. Trustees chair Dianne Byrum said the goal was “to identify the best person possible to lead Michigan Student University.”

Melanie Foster, co-chair of MSU’s 18-member search committee, commented on the announcement at the May 28 meeting.

“Today represents a pivotal moment in MSU’s 164-year history as we begin what I am confident will be an engaged and exciting future under the leadership of Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr.,” she said.

Stanley was in East Lansing for the announcement along with his wife and three of his four children.

“MSU is one of the world’s leading research universities, and I am grateful to the Board of Trustees and the Presidential Search Committee that so ably represented the entire MSU community for giving me the opportunity to serve this great institution,” Stanley said in a statement on the school’s website. “MSU’s core strength is its amazing students, superb faculty, dedicated staff and proud alumni, and I cannot wait to get to campus to meet with you and learn from you.”

Previous MSU president Lou Anna Simon resigned from the position in January 2018

after being criticized for how she handled allegations that the university’s doctor Larry Nassar molested female gymnasts and athletes. Since the resignation, the school has been led by interim presidents.

In his statement, Stanley commented on the scandal.

“I know the Spartan community has been profoundly troubled by the events of the past years that have shaken confidence in the institution,” he said. “We will meet these challenges together, and we will build on the important work that has already been done to create a campus culture of diversity, inclusion, equity, accountability and safety that supports all of our endeavors.”

State University of New York Chancellor Kristina Johnson will work with the SUNY board of trustees to appoint an interim president, according to a press release from SUNY. A campus search committee also will be assembled to conduct a national search for a permanent president.

“Under Dr. Stanley’s leadership, Stony Brook University has become a vibrant center of research and one of the most highly regarded universities in the nation,” Johnson said. “His commitment to advancing technologies and research in environmental protection and renewable energy has been among many of Dr. Stanley’s most notable accomplishments. On behalf of the entire SUNY family, we celebrate his achievements.”

Stanley will be Michigan State University’s 21st president and will begin his term at MSU Aug. 1.

American Legion’s centennial celebrated in the Town of Smithtown

The presentation of the colors was conducted by members of the three American Legion posts, followed by an a cappella performance of the national anthem by the Smithtown High School East Chamber Choir. The Recognition of the Posts was delivered by Smithtown American Legion Post 833 Service Officer Tom Mooney.

Kings Park American Legion Post 944 Commander Ken Dolan gave a brief speech about the formation of the American Legion.

“In support of their wounded comrades to honor the fallen and to care for their surviving spouses, and to protect democracy they pledged their lives to defend, these troops envisioned a different kind of Veterans Association. The American Legion would be built on strengthening the nation, not serving themselves, through four primary pillars of volunteer work: Veterans, Defense, Youth and Americanism,” he said.

A brief interlude performance of “To The Colors” was played by Kevin Eaton on the bugle. The ceremony closed with final comments from Sherwood Brothers Post 1152 Commander Ed Springer Sr. who discussed the importance of inviting the younger generations of veterans to join the membership.

The Smithtown American Legion Rifle Squad executed the ceremonial military gun salute followed by a solo performance of “God Bless America,” performed by Smithtown PIO Nicole Garguilo. Suffolk introduces new substance abuse awareness training for coaches

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Legislators are asking high school athletic coaches to help combat substance abuse in Suffolk County and are looking to give them the training needed to do so.

On May 21, at a press conference held at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) and Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) announced a partnership with the nonprofit Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Bellone said a new, countyfunded program will provide athletic coaches and trainers in middle and high schools with a 75-minute training course designed to combat substance abuse among student-athletes. Ward Melville coaches have already been through the awareness training that now will be offered to all county secondary schools.

“This program will help save lives,” Bellone said. “I have no doubt about that.”

Krista Bertschi, who lost her son Anthony Mazzella to drug addiction, attended the press conference, holding a photo of her son, to show support for the training.

Mazzella passed away Jan. 22, 2017, from an overdose of heroin and fentanyl. Bertschi said her son was a boxer who was clean for two years when he dislocated his shoulder before Thanksgiving of 2016. While he refused pain medication at first, as the pain lingered, he decided to take them.

The program, developed with LICADD and

Stony Brook University, will look to provide coaches with the knowledge of the warning signs of drug and alcohol abuse in studentathletes and how to engage and intervene with team members suspected of abusing addictive substances. Bellone said a coach’s knowledge of an injury may be especially critical in that they may be able to link subtle changes in a player’s behavior to the treatment they are receiving as many times opioids are prescribed for pain.

Hahn had piloted the program with several local school districts, working alongside LICADD and SBU to develop the training. The county will be providing $100,000 to LICADD to aid in developing the program.

Hahn, a graduate of Ward Melville High School, said she was pleased to launch the program at her alma mater. As a former studentathlete and the mother of a recent Ward Melville cheerleader and current Three Village athlete, Hahn said she recognizes how influential a coach’s role can be in a student’s life both on and off the field. She added that the training course was customized to address the various scenarios coaches may encounter, from an injured teenager being prescribed opioids to a marijuana bag falling out of a backpack to team members talking about a big party coming up.

“It’s a unique place in a player’s life that is provided by the coach with an unparalleled opportunity to understand the circumstances the athlete is facing,” she said.

Hahn said social workers are still needed when a problem is identified but coaches can be the first line of defense.

“They can play an important role in the fight against student drug abuse, and through this training, we have invited them to be among the traditional stakeholders working to save lives,” she said.

Steve Chassman, executive director of LICADD, said the seeds of drug disorders usually start in high school, and he thanked the legislators and coaches for their help in solving what he called a public health crisis.

“We are encouraging the coaches to create a culture where people can work together and come forward not just from a disciplinary standpoint but from a public health standpoint,” he said.

Peter Melore, executive director of health, physical education, recreation and athletics for the Three Village Central School District, said during training the district coaches had numerous

questions, including how to approach a student, and what to say if they were approached first.

“It’s been a privilege and an honor to be the first to do this,” he said. “I would be remiss if I did not thank our coaches for their engagement in the workshops.”

Bertschi said she believes the program will foster essential communication between coaches and parents if an issue is identified. She will continue to support awareness and prevention programs such as the coach training course, she said, “In memory of my beautiful son and all of the other angels gone too soon to this horrific disease so that no other parent has to walk in the ugly shoes that I walk in every day.”

SBU continues to connect students and community

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Stony Brook University is bringing back a program that has included past international students and community members, with the hope to extend its reach.

This past academic year, the former Host Family Program at the university was put on hold as school administrators and former host families discussed how to bring the program back under one of the university’s departments. For more than 40 years, under the direction of Stony Brook resident Rhona Goldman, it provided international students opportunities to learn about the U.S. and the local area by developing relationships with volunteer individuals and families. Students and community members would meet up and go shopping or sightseeing, have dinner or share in other activities.

Lindsi Walker, senior assistant dean for the International Academic Programs and Services at SBU, said the new program is called the International Friends and Family Program and operates under the auspices of the university’s Visa and Immigration Services.

The assistant dean said the reorganization was done with the hope of giving the program a fresh overview, to bring it back in a bigger way, to reach more students and community members and establish safeguards. Over the last year, the university held focus groups with prior participants that Walker said provided essential feedback.

Harold Metcalf, an SBU faculty member and Stony Brook resident, has participated in the program since the early 1970s and engaged with the focus groups. Metcalf said he and many other former host families are pleased that the program will return. In the past, he and his wife hosted two students per academic year.

While Metcalf is looking forward to continuing to participate in the program, he credited Goldman for her work through the decades, saying it was “an amazing task that she took on.” He said while the former program had cooperation from university administrators, it relied more on word of mouth and announcements on church bulletin boards to spread the word to interested parties.

Walker said it was discovered during focus groups that many former students and hosts are still connected, something that Metcalf can attest to as he still keeps in touch with many of the former students he and his wife hosted.

“You can see how, really for a lot of them, these are deep connections that really give them a positive experience here at Stony Brook because it connects them with the area and the community in a deep way,” Walker said. “And we found that was reciprocated by the community as well. A lot of them have those same feelings.”

“It is a great exposure for international students,” Gurveen Saluja of India said. “It helps to understand the American culture and also give us an opportunity to share our culture as well.”

Walker said how much time a student and host spend together is up to them, and a host can be married, single, a parent, child-free, retired or employed.

“The ideal host family is any individual or family who really is willing and passionate about our community and our area and able to connect with an international student,” she said.

Bulls softball team tripped up in first loss of postseason play

Smithtown East’s softball team broke out to a tworun lead in the top of the first inning and West Islip answered back in the bottom of the inning in a Suffolk Class AA quarterfinal round May 22, but from there the Bulls’ bats went silent. West Islip crept ahead scoring a run in the third, fourth and sixth innings to win the game, 5-2. In double elimination play the Bulls, the No. 5 seed, went to the loser bracket where they hosted No. 11 seed Lindenhurst the following day in a must-win game to stay alive in the postseason.

The Bulls won out against Lindenhurst, and faced Bellport May 24 but lost, 3-1.

The applicant must demonstrate an understanding and experience in facilities management and the ability to manage an allocated budget of $880,000 annually; Directs a staff of 4 Kennel Attendants and 4 Animal Control Officers in the routine maintenance and wellbeing of the Shelter clients and operations; Maintains an established and aggressive Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program throughout the 55 square miles of Town of Smithtown’s jurisdiction; works with the Town’s Public Information Officer, community and volunteer groups to publicize the Adoption Center via social media, fairs and other suitable public venues; Maintains standard operating procedures and submits reports on all phases of Animal Shelter operations to the appropriate regulatory agencies and the Town Board; establishes and sustains effective working relationships with the general public, surrounding municipal shelters, and bona fide not for profit rescue groups.

Minimum requirements: Veterinarian Technician license, with four (4) years of paid experience in the care and handling of animals in an institutional setting, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or Associates Degree in Animal Care or related field, and experience as described above; or Graduation from HS with six (6) years of experience as described above; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary: $85,000/yr. with generous and comprehensive benefits package.

Open the freezer Despite the hours we work to consistently get this paper into your hands and the local news to your eyes and your ears, we cannot be everywhere at once. Our budgets are ever-more limited, and our attention is pulled to all parts of our coverage areas. News outlets having to cut staff and resources means there are gaps of information. We do our best, and we hope you agree it is well worth the buck you paid for it, but perfect coverage is impossible in this day and age.

Something will move in to fill the gap — it’s the nature of these things. Surprisingly, that hole has been filled with something that was once used for college kids to learn who was dating whom, that being Facebook.

It’s amazing how much information is parsed and spread through individual Facebook pages, along with both private and public groups. You have community pages, moms pages, VFWs, even small municipalities like fire departments and villages all using their pages to get messages out. For us journalists, Facebook has become a tool to gather stories, sources and even occasionally to conduct interviews.

But for residents, Facebook is a razor-barbed rose.

Disturbingly, to professional journalists who do their absolute best to get to the heart of the truth, the opposite is regularly proliferated through these same Facebook pages.

Rumors fly across social media faster than any one person could hope to actually investigate each post.

At meetings, we often hear officials complain about the rumors spread online, though we journalists condemn any elected official who should ever truly complain about a community becoming engaged, looking at the overall low polling numbers across the spectrum. However, this activism on the community’s side is not helped with false facts.

Taking journalism classes in college, students are often first made to take a media literacy course, which helps students identify false information when it’s presented to them. One phrase, which became a tagline at the media literacy course at Stony Brook University, was “open the freezer,” relating to a media report back to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans back in 2005. One broadcast claimed the bodies of those who died during that traumatic storm and its aftermath had been stacked in a walk-in freezer as they were waiting for transport. However, the news report was false, there were no bodies in the freezer. The problem?

The reporter never bothered to open the freezer and see for themself.

Don’t take what is on Facebook for truth automatically, as each one of us can be a little journalistic even without a degree. Try researching online, try calling the people referenced in these stories. Don’t take any information presented for you at its face value. Skepticism is healthy for the eager news junkie.

Never let what you read on Facebook be the end to a story. Be sure to take a peek inside that proverbial freezer.

Last year, I helped to secure House passage of the largest fishing reform legislation in a decade, the Strengthening Fishing Communities and Increasing Flexibility in Fisheries Management Act, which improved federal fisheries law so regulations and quotas can be more transparent, equitable and fair, and improves data collection and science and ends the current arbitrary 10-year rebuilding timeline by replacing it with a more flexible approach that helps fishermen while preserving important fisheries.

This Congress, the House must once again pass this important legislation, and the Senate must finally take action to send it to the president’s desk.

It is imperative that New York State step up to the plate for our fishermen as well and pursue alternative data collection methods so that flawed decisions made by the ASMFC can be challenged. The State of Florida is instituting it’s own data collection program on red snapper, utilizing state resources from local universities to do the science and statistics.

With world class marine science institutions like Stony Brook, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) and Cornell that can do the research, this is the model New York should be following.

Since my time in the New York State Senate when I led the successful effort to repeal the Saltwater Fishing License Fee, I’ve never stopped fighting for hardworking Long Islanders and to protect and preserve the waterways that so many of them rely on, and we cannot stop now.

As we head into this year’s fishing season, we are reminded of just how urgent it is to turn the tide for our local fishermen.

Managing the uneasy marriage between determination and doubt

W

e generally don’t have to look too far to find difficult marriages. But what about the unions that reside

inside us?

Determination and doubt travel together when we’re making a decision, when we’re confronting the naysayers and when we’re preparing for the next steps in our lives.

Determination is often considered the more admirable member of this marriage. Such fortitude pushes us to set new expectations and to venture into arenas where the risks we take could cause physical or emotional bruises.

We see determination when we look at the faces of people running up a hill, returning home late from work, or practicing their musical instruments until they develop rings on their lips or red welts on their necks.

When we’re seeking inspiration, we read about or consider the determination of others, who overcome financial, emotional or logistical limitations and exceed everyone’s expectations but their own. Determination is akin to an offroad vehicle that we maneuver into untrodden or difficult terrain, hoping our suspension and alignment can handle the sudden and unexpected contours of a landscape better suited for pictures or studies of nature than for travel.

While it has a bad reputation, doubt, like the blue girl Sadness from the movie “Inside Out,” also has its place. Doubt can, of course, make the determined part of ourselves even more steadfast,

as we seek to prove to ourselves and everyone else that we can and will accomplish anything.

Doubt is the rain that can make the sunshine that much sweeter.

Doubt also can spring from reason and understanding, as in, “I doubt climbing to the top of that tree, when I haven’t maneuvered to the top of a tree in years, is a good idea.”

Yes, doubt can and does save us, not just from embarrassment but from injuries, discomfort or dead ends.

Reflexively ignoring doubt as an unwelcome voice whispering in our ear carries risks that may be unnecessary, such as ignoring a “Beware of the Dog” sign before jogging through a stranger’s yard.

So, how do we deal with this married couple?

Do we let determination rule the day most of the time, while we periodically give doubt the chance to share concerns about obstacles and consequences?

The answer depends on the circumstance.

What is the downside to acknowledging, understanding and appreciating the origin and

potential benefit of a doubt?

This doubt shouldn’t need to hide behind the punch bowl, sit in the dark with the coats in a back bedroom, or wait in the car while determination gets to run wild, pushing our limits.

We should consider doubt — whether we or someone else expresses it — in the open, allowing ourselves to ponder and plan for the difficulties ahead, giving ourselves a chance to make informed decisions and to see a few steps into the maze of our future.

Our doubt may help us find a better course of action, redirecting and refocusing a determination that enables us to persevere over the course of a future filled with potential but riddled with uncertainty.

If our determination makes a better case than our doubt, at least we’ve benefited from the marriage that lives in us. Indeed, at its finest, determination should not only understand and appreciate doubt, but this tenacity should also use concerns and objections as motivation, giving determination the opportunity to win over the concerns doubt expresses.

From sudden choices, deep roots grow

ncredible as it seems to me, it was exactly 50 years ago that we started packing for our move to the North Shore of Long Island. We were on an Air Force base in Texas at the time and had originally not planned to come here. It was 1969, the Vietnam War (a part of our everyday life in the military) was raging, both Kennedys and Martin Luther King had been assassinated, the country was being ripped apart by riots, and until that moment we had intended to settle permanently in San Diego. tour of duty ended, we should live on the southern California coast.

So we were taking our two sons, the third still in utero, to settle on the other side of the country from the city in which we were both born. But our families were still in New York. And when the time came for us to declare our intentions to the movers, we couldn’t go through with the decision. In those chaotic times, family seemed the most important element of our lives. My parents were our children’s only grandparents, my husband’s parents having both passed away some years earlier. Our children were my parents’ only grandchildren, and they all adored each other.

To everyone’s surprise we changed our plans at the last minute and wound up in Stony Brook, attracted by the coming medical center, which my husband felt would enrich his ophthalmology practice. The rest is history, our history interacting with our hometown, and after half a century I will say that the community never disappointed.

for like royalty. After a nomadic year of renting, we found a beautiful piece of property in the middle of the woods and borrowed to the hilt so that we could build a modest ranch house there.

My husband started his solo practice—that’s what physicians did in those days—in a small medical building in Port Jefferson, and after six months we could afford linoleum to cover the subflooring in the kitchen. A year later we were able to pave the driveway. We regarded those as personal high water marks.

Meanwhile we loved, loved, loved the beaches, the creeks and the rivers within easy drive. We swam, collected all manner of shells and identified them for our children, we rode tire tubes into the harbor as the tide swept us out of the creek and we rented kayaks to paddle on the Nissequogue River. Our big expenditure was a Sailfish that we kept on the rack at the beach, and we sailed across Stony Brook Harbor to the Smithtown beach.

welcomed us, we found friends—or rather our children found friends and we then became friends with the parents—and we enjoyed the social and cultural scenes thoroughly.

Our children were educated in the local school district well enough to continue in life and thrive. We thank the many teachers, administrators, counselors and other personnel who every day delivered that fine effort.

My husband’s practice grew, and so did our children, so that shortly after the youngest started first grade I was able to realize my dream: starting a hometown newspaper to serve these villages. Again, our work was welcomed and our lives blossomed. I am thrilled every time I meet new residents and visitors to our area. Those contacts are invariably enriching, and we take our mission to provide impartial information and protect the community to be a noble pursuit. Over the years, I have been lucky enough to be joined by highly committed colleagues.

After 50 years, we can look back and know that we made the right choice.
