Plot thickens in Commack, Port Jefferson FOIL case

By Elana Glowatz Both sides of a disagreement over public records have dug in their heels, insisting over the last few days that the fault lies with the other.

Port Jefferson Mayor Margot Garant originally expressed regret over a report from nonprofit group Reclaim New York — which focuses on government transparency and finances, employment and the economy — that said both her village and the Commack School District had failed to properly respond to requests for public records through the state’s Freedom of Information Law. But shortly afterward, her office sent a letter to TBR News responding to Reclaim New York’s claim that its appeals for spending information were ignored, saying, “Nothing could be further from the truth.”

The Reclaim New York office has since confirmed receiving more than 1,200 pages of documents on Tuesday morning from the village, fulfilling that public information request.

New York State’s Freedom of Information Law requires governments and school districts to respond to records requests, commonly known as FOIL requests, within five business days, whether with the information requested, a denial or an acknowledgement of the request that includes an estimated date when one of the former two will occur. Denials can be appealed, and agencies are not allowed to deny a request “on the basis that the request is volumi-

nous or that locating or reviewing the requested records or providing the requested copies is burdensome because the agency lacks sufficient staffing.”

As part of a project it dubbed the New York Transparency Project, Reclaim New York sent 253 Freedom of Information requests to school districts and municipalities on Long Island. It reported on its findings, saying that while many entities complied with state guidelines on processing such public records requests, on Suffolk County’s North Shore both Port Jefferson Village and the Commack district did not.

Entities that it said complied included Suffolk County; Brookhaven, Smithtown and Huntington towns; Belle Terre and Lake Grove villages; and the Port Jefferson, Kings Park, Huntington, Smithtown, Mount Sinai, Miller Place and Rocky Point school districts, among others.

Reclaim New York spokesperson Doug Kellogg said Commack denied part of the FOIL request, “making big chunks essentially useless,” and that Port Jefferson Village at first was “underprepared” to properly respond to its request for 2014 information on vendors, including what the village made purchase orders for and who it made checks out to.

“Port Jeff never worked with us from there, they just ignored the appeals and our phone calls,” Kellogg said.

Village Clerk Bob Juliano challenged that claim last week, noting that the same day his office received the FOIL request via email, on March 7, he acknowledged receipt. He said the treasurer was working on compiling the information, estimating it would be done by the end of May. Commack School District spokesperson Brenda Lentsch also responded on May 20, saying that the district answered a first FOIL request, then received a second that required private information be redacted and would have come at a cost of $0.25 per page, which the district communicated to Reclaim New York.

Garant’s initial email response to the TBR News story was that she was “beyond disappointed” that she did not know about the FOIL request to the village.

She followed up with a letter that called Reclaim New York’s request “a blatant transparency test” that asked for extensive information: “Several village employees have had to spend significant time away from their duties serving the village in order to gather these records. So far, approximately 4,500 pages of documents have been identified and are in electronic format, and the work goes on.”

request which would better meet their needs,” but the group “never attempted to work with the treasurer to fine-tune the request” or followed up to check its status.

Reclaim New York noted an appeal email sent to the mayor’s office on April 11 that said the group had not heard back on its FOIL request, and Executive Director Brandon Muir challenged the mayor’s contention that his group attacked the village in a statement this week.

“Reclaim New York’s Transparency Project treats every municipality the same,” he said. “It’s designed to create more open government for the people of our state.”

Kings Park parade committee selects 2017’s grand marshals

The parade may be over, but the Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has been keeping busy, working on the preparations for its 2017 Grand Marshal Ball and 2017 St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Within three weeks of the 2016 parade, one of the largest on Long Island, committee members were reviewing various phases of the 2016 parade. The first order of business was to select a grand marshal.

In an unprecedented move, the McWilliams Sisters — Cathy Donnelly, Barbara Griffin and Marge Stajk — were named to lead the 2017 St. Patrick’s Parade.

This honor is believed to be unique, as three siblings were named grand marshals, the organizers said.

The McWilliams sisters were selected based on their Irish heritage, community spirit, and personal demeanor. Their parents, Edward and Margaret McWilliams, moved from County Carlow, Ireland, settling in Kings Park, where the parents opened the Park Diner in 1944. The family consisted of three sisters, Catherine, Barbara, and Margaret, and three brothers, Edward, Joseph, and Ronald.

The sisters attended St. Joseph’s School until the 8th grade, graduated from Kings Park High School, and raised their families in Kings Park. The parade committee noted that each sister donated time and efforts toward various charitable endeavors, especially as members of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 3.

The Grand Marshal Ball will be held at Flowerfields, on Friday, November 18.

The event will consist of the presentation of the “McWilliams Sisters,” Irish music and dance, raffles, and live band. The Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day parade will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017.

The committee thanked Kevin “The Professor” Denis for his extraordinary efforts as its chairman. As one of the Parade’s founders, he excelled at raising the necessary funding for the parade, which features more than 20 bagpipe bands, fire departments, floats, and organizations. During the past six years, the Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade has become one of the largest parades on Long Island. Denis will continue to aid the committee. Kevin Johnston was named the committee’s new chairman.

Open mic comes to Smithtown The new Vox Populi open mic night will be the first ever to pay its performers.

The weekly event’s opening night was on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at Katies of Smithtown and will be running weekly, according to host and creator Michael Perlmutter.

“As musicians we must remember that we are the product, not the client. We get paid, we don’t pay. We put time and money and love into our art. I’ve heard this sentiment echoed ad infinitum but it’s

time to do something about it,” Perlmutter wrote in his announcement address.

Changes to the regular open mic formula are being made to fit this new system, with public response very favorable over the novel prospect of being paid to play an open mic.

Too many cocktails

A 22-year-old man from Hauppauge was arrested on May 21 after police pulled him over for running a red light while driving a 2013 Mitsubishi on Route 347 in Smithtown and said he was driving drunk. He was charged with driving while ability impaired by alcohol and drugs.

Being a pain with cocaine

On May 21, a 51-year-old man from East Northport was arrested on Veterans Memorial Highway in Smithtown after police said he had cocaine on him at 9:10 p.m.

He was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell.

Cocaine in Kings Park

On May 20, police on Indian Head Road in Kings Park arrested a 36-year-old man from Port Jefferson after they said he had cocaine in his possession. He was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Police said a 30-year-old man from Miller Place was deliberately using his 2015 BMW to block a tow truck from reaching two cars that crashed into each other on Smithtown Boulevard, and then started yelling at officers on May 20. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct with violent behavior.

A 19-year-old man from Ronkonkoma was arrested on May 19 at Richard Avenue and Express Drive North in Ronkonkoma after police said he had marijuana on him while inside a 1993 Mercury. He was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

61 names added to 9/11 memorial wall in Nesconset

By Phil Corso To the wall, the names were new, but to those at 9/11 Responders Remembered Park, they brought with them years of courage and heroism.

All eyes were on Nesconset on Saturday as 61 more names were etched into the wall of heroes at the park, honoring those who paid the ultimate price for their efforts in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The event was packed with first responders, their families, lawmakers and advocates, including advocate and first responder John Feal of Nesconset’s FealGood Foundation and comedian Jon Stewart.

“This park was built for one reason — not to be the first of its kind or the best, but to serve the 9/11 community with grace, dignity and humility,” Feal said to the crowd on Saturday before the new names were read aloud. “The stories and acts of heroism cannot be told or passed down if we do not live long enough to tell them. I hope this park will help tell the stories of our nation’s greatest resources: its citizens, both uniformed and nonuniformed.”

Feal and several members of what they called the 9/11 community have descended upon the Nesconset park every year since it was established in 2009 to add names to the wall of heroes, paying tribute to those who have died on or after that horrific day. Martin Aponte, president of the park, reminded the crowd that they were not there to mourn, but to reflect, remember and recognize the stories behind the names on the wall behind him.

“To maintain this park is the least we can do for those who have served our nation with distinguished honor, courage and sacrifice,” he said. “We are here only to serve a fragile fraternity of heroes who come here to rest and join their brothers and sisters. Their story is told through this park.”

You don’t ever have to thank me for anything, because I can never in my life repay the debt that you all gave to not just me, but to the city and to the country.

Kings Park Farmers Market coming back for sixth year

BY Alex Petroski For a sixth year, Smithtown residents will be treated to something fresh, sweet, organic, savory and local.

The Kings Park Farmers Market, which was founded in 2010, is set to open for the 2016 season very soon. The Sunday market will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from June 5 to Nov. 20 in the municipal parking lot on the corner of Route 25A and Main Street in Kings Park across the street from the fire department. The market will offer certified organic vegetables and greens, Long Island corn, poultry, eggs, heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, squash, onions, cheese, milk, pasta, pickles, smoked pork, soaps, local fish, baked goods, gluten-free cookies, soy candles and more.

“We are excited to be back in Kings Park after a long off-season and we just enjoy reconnecting with our friends and customers who are all so loyal to the market,” Bernadette Martin, who organizes farmers markets across Long Island through her company Friends and Farmers Inc., said in an email Tuesday. Martin’s markets get the name LI Green Market.

One of the new vendors participating in the Sunday market this year that Martin is excited about is Crimson & Cove, a Nesconset-based line of organic herbs and spices. They join returning vendors Blue Duck Bakery, St. James Brewery, Salce Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegars, The Fink Family Farm and many more.

The market began years ago when Kings Park residents Ann Marie Nedell and civic association member Alyson Elish-Swartz each separately wanted a farmers market for Kings Park. Kings Park Civic Association President Sean Lehmann got Nedell and Elish-Swartz in contact with each other, and after some community crowd-sourcing they came up with logistical ideas for the market. When they met Martin, the idea turned into reality.

Martin’s Friends and Farmers Inc. paired up with the Kings Park Civic Association to sponsor the market. Martin manages the market every Sunday.

“The Kings Park Civic Association is such a great partner on this project and bring wonderfully entertaining live music to the market weekly,” Martin said. “We will also be having more cooking demonstrations scheduled for this year as we launch our Know Real Food Campaign for 2016.”

The market is a popular spot for shoppers every year.

“Everyone in the community is really looking forward to another exciting year at the market,” a statement on the Kings Park Civic Association website said. “It has become the cornerstone of our town and really enhances the sense of community in our hamlet while vitalizing our downtown business area.”

West girls take down Half Hollow Hills Watch out for the Smithtown West girls’ lacrosse team.

Over the last four years, the Bulls have worked their way up from being a .500 team to a near-perfect team, with a 14-1 overall record this season.

The girls rode a six-game winning streak into the playoffs, and, earning a first-round bye as the top seed, outscored No. 8-seeded Half Hollow Hills, 16-4, in the first round on May 20.

Junior Chelsea Witteck had a game, tallying a hat trick and assisting on five of the team’s remaining 13 goals.

Senior Natalie Lynch tacked on three goals of her own while contributing one assist; and freshmen Janine Suris, Taylor Mennella and Lauren Coletti, and junior Kayla Kosubinsky all added two goals each.

Senior Marisa D’Amico made 10 saves to help her team to victory.

Smithtown West hosted No. 4 Northport in the semifinals on Wednesday, but results were not available by press time. If the Bulls win, the team will face the winner of the No. 2 Middle Country/No. 3 West Islip match on Tuesday at the Dowling Sports Complex at 8 p.m.

West Islip is the only team to beat Smithtown West this season, 14-5, on April 21. The team edged out Middle Country, 12-11, on April 14.

Junior attack Sean Barry scored four goals and added two assists, junior midfielder Bobby Burns tallied a hat trick and assisted twice, and senior attack Dan Rooney found the back of the net three times.

Also on the leaderboard for the Bulls was junior attach Michael Latini, with two goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Connor DeSimone scored once and assisted twice.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Harkin came up with 16 saves to earn the win.

Thanks to a grant from the Smithtown Children’s Foundation, students in Ali Cheselka’s family and consumer sciences classes have set up a greenhouse and garden tower and are watching their plants flourish and fresh food grow over the last few weeks.

Robotics team visits homeless shelter In an effort to continually strengthen the community-school connection, the robotics team from Smithtown school district visited the Family Service League homeless shelter in Brentwood in April.

The members of the Mechanical Bulls spent the afternoon introducing the field of robotics to homeless children. The children learned some basics about robotics and were shown three different types of

robots created by the team. Team members discussed the various competitions and preparations needed to compete in the rigorous FIRST competitions.

Team members then drove the robot around the room and used it to roll a ball to multiple children from the shelter.

The children asked great questions and enjoyed watching and learning about robots.

After receiving an Award of Excellence at the elementary school level, Sydney earned an award in the Suffolk County level of the competition. Moving on to the state competition, her dance choreography submission was one of the top four chosen in New York State in her age group among 455 entries.

This year’s PTA Reflections program theme was “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Sydney choreographed a lyrical dance titled “Go Free,” using the song “Stitches” by Shawn Mendez.

Her winning entry will be on display in the Reflections Art Gallery at the PTA National Convention in November.

Val Buzzetta, a long-time resident of Head of the Harbor, NY and Marathon, Fl, passed away December 4, 2015. A resilient, sprited, and extremely intelligent lady whose wit and ability to converse were loved by all, Val had for many years fought her way through a variety of illnesses that would have sidelined most of us. Her resolve and courage were admired by all, but most especially by her close family who truly appreciated the challenges she faced on a daily basis.

A long time member of the community, Val believed in partronizing the local businesses and restaurants that make our area special, and her familiar face and friendly smile was a fixture around town. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh and joke with friends and everyone she came into contact with on a daily basis. In recent years, as she became less able to participate in her favorite athletic activities, she developed a love for puzzles, word games, and literature but most especially enjoyed her daily crosswords, most of which would confound the rest of us but that is the kind of lady she was - the more the challenge, the better she enjoyed it!

She was able to enjoy some travel especially around the beautiful Eastern seaboard ports in CT, MA, and ME on her boat the Impetuous, which she enjoyed doing, especially with friends or family aboard. She also enjoyed her frequent dinner dates with both family and friends, and kept a busy social

calendar year round.

She and her husband of nearly 60 years, Joe Buzzetta, met by chance through friends back in the 50’s and married in 1957 just prior to Joe’s deployment in Europe. The pair were just 18 and 20 years old when they moved from New York to Frankfurt, Germany and settled on the Army base where Joe was stationed. Theirs was a very interesting and amazing marriage in the early years as they travelled around Europe on Joe’s military leave times to various countries while he pursued his auto racing career. They learned to speak German fluently and made many friends across the world in those years, after which they moved back to Long Island and settled in St. James. While Joe got his Automotive business off the ground, Val quickly got their household organized and they started their family with son Joe in 1963. Son James was born in 1966 and daughter Nancy in 1968, and the couple decided to move to Nissequogue where the kids could grow up and attend the Smithtown schools throughout the 70’s and 80’s. In the early 80’s the family built a home in the neighboring village of Head of the Harbor which the extended family still considers home. A fabulous cook and gracious hostess, Val entertained many friends and family members at large and small gatherings over the years. Avid travellers at heart, Val and Joe maintained many of their friendships abroad and often travelled

across the Atlantic with Joe’s racing activities or just for recreation. Val also enjoyed many years of skiing up in Vermont, and warm weather activities in her Florida Keys hometown of Marathon, including boating, snorkelling, and the like.

In addition to being an avid skier and boater, Val’s favorite activity was Tennis, which she enjoyed tremendously and she treasured her many leagues and tournaments at the Nissequogue Golf Club where the couple also attended countless social events over the years. Val made many, many friends around Nissequogue and Head of the Harbor during those years, as well as in the Florida Keys community of Marathon in the 90‘s and later, and the family truly appreciated the many well wishes we have received from those friends in the time following her passing.

In addition to her beloved immediate family including husband Joe, sons Joseph and James, and daughter Nancy; Val had her 7 Grandchildren James Buzzetta, Dan Buzzetta, Chris Buzzetta, Valerie Staniloff, Jennifer Staniloff, Isabella Buzzetta, and Joey Buzzetta; her 2 brothers, Robert T. DeMarco of Virginia, and Richard DeMarco of California, and her many cousins, nephews, and of course, dear Friends.

Anyone wishing to honor Val’s memory with a donation to the Long Island 2 Day Breast Cancer Walk, St. Charles Hospital, or the Little Shelter, would be most appreciated. These were just a few of her favorite causes.

Smithtown BOE considers changing high school start time

By Alex Petroski Smithtown high school students may soon be collectively rejoicing everywhere.

A committee assembled in 2015 to examine the pros and cons of moving back the start of the school day for ninththrough 12th-grade students provided an update to the board of education, district administration and the community on their findings at a meeting Tuesday.

The School Start Times Steering Committee is comprised of district administrators, parents, students and teachers. District Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Jennifer Bradshaw led the discussion Tuesday. Bradshaw said the committee watched a New York State School Boards Association webinar about the Glen Falls City School District’s shift to a later start time a few years ago and the drastically positive impacts it has had on student behavior. They also consulted with the district’s athletic director, guidance counselors, parents and principals from other schools who have made the change for their input on the impact of a later start time.

“We have an obligation to look at this for our students,” Bradshaw said. Currently Smithtown’s high schools start first period at 7:20 a.m. “Physiologically, biologically they’re not ready to learn.”

Bradshaw quoted a recent press release from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that indicated two out of three high school students in the United States

don’t get enough sleep.

Joanne Romanelli, a parent in the district who is on the start time committee and also works as a certified holistic health and wellness coach addressed the board during Tuesday’s meeting. She said that forcing teens to wake up as early as 6 a.m. creates a vicious cycle of stress, outof-whack hormones and distorted sleeping patterns because their bodies cannot physically fall asleep before about 11:30 p.m.

“If you’re getting up earlier you’re feeling stress, you’re feeling tired, you’re not doing so well in school, you might be depressed or you have low serotonin,” Romanelli said. “There is more depression so now you’re feeling more stress. You’re having raised cortisol throughout the day.

Raised cortisol makes you feel energized, it doesn’t make you feel sleepy. So now, you can’t go to sleep. So it causes more stress.

It just cycles ... A later start time is what’s best and it’s healthier for the students.”

School board members Louis Liguori and Joanne McEnroy said they’d like to see these updates fast-tracked from suggestions to a proposal and eventually a change because they’ve seen firsthand how difficult getting their teenagers out of bed really is.

“We pretty much have covered the gamut on all levels of educating children right down to nutritional changes that we have going on and [on a county and state level they’re] just not talking about, on a higher level, sleep deprivation or sleep patterns of our students,” Liguori said. “Who are we catering to? We’re not catering to the stu-

Donating saves lives

Councilwoman Jane Bonner recently went above and beyond the call of duty as a public servant, donating her kidney to a friend she has known for almost 40 years.

Her friend had already undergone two organ transplant surgeries and was in desperate need of a new kidney when Bonner stepped up.

He is not the only American who has been in desperate need of an organ. Many are not as lucky.

The National Kidney Foundation said that more than 3,000 new patients are added to the kidney waiting list every month, and 13 people die every day waiting for a kidney transplant.

Bonner is helping to raise awareness for a topic that many people may not be thinking about. With all the advancements medicine makes every year, and with the U.S. having literally double the number of kidneys needed to keep the population alive, it should seem shocking that people still die from kidney failure in this day and age.

Of course, donating a kidney is certainly no small feat.

Anytime one undergoes surgery there is a risk. But the conversation is important to have, even with yourself. If you have two healthy kidneys, you may be able to help save another person’s life.

The Living Kidney Donors Network said that more than 80,000 people are currently on the waiting list, where most people remain for more than five years waiting for a lifesaving donation while on dialysis.

The waiting list would become exponentially longer if we were to also consider all the other organs people are waiting on, such as hearts, livers and bone marrow.

Just bringing this topic more into the spotlight may spare a life. We commend Jane Bonner for having the guts to do something so huge to save another person’s life, and for sharing her story.

County Executive Steve Bellone made a late decision on Thursday, May 12 to move his press conference from his offices at the H. Lee Dennison Building to the steps of the district attorney’s office. After all, it’s best to be a safe distance away from a glass house before throwing stones. At that press conference Bellone demanded the resignation of District Attorney Tom Spota, levying a slew of allegations against his office and bemoaning a “culture of corruption which perverts this government ...,” while painting himself as a victim of the corruption swirling around him.

Bellone’s portrayal is laughable. He is as much a part of this culture of corruption as is Tom Spota. I appeared uninvited at Bellone’s press conference and addressed the media not in an act of political grandstanding, but to ensure the whole truth comes out regarding the corruption that is eating away at our county. For too long elected officials in Suffolk County have been allowed to go unchallenged, hiding behind half-truths, and pointing fingers in a never-ending quest to escape blame. When I believe the people of this county are being deceived, it is my responsibility as a legislator to speak out. It is not about politics, it is about putting an end to the lies.

Those who have followed the media accounts know all too well the saga of disgraced former Police Chief James Burke. As much as Steve Bellone would like to pin Burke’s hiring on Spota, it is he who ultimately bears the responsibility for Burke.

He hired him, he ignored warnings about him, and he continued to stand by him despite evidence of his wrongdoing. However, amidst Burke-Gate, some may have forgotten about Bellone’s IT Commissioner, Donald Rodgers, who was forced to resign in 2014 after being arrested and

And, perhaps, one of history’s deepest friend cuts, “Et tu, Brute?” Then again, I’m not sure how much Julius Caesar considered Brutus his friend on that fateful day.

And while we’re certainly aware of the dangers of unrequited love from literature and history, are there unrequited friendships?

If you believe a recent study out of Tel Aviv University in Israel, the answer is a resounding “yes,” and it happens more often than we might hope. This research found that only half of those other people called their friends returned the favor. That means if you like John and Joe, chances are John might like you, but Joe could be somewhere between indifferent to you or annoyed at the way you tap his arm each time you say something too insignificant to break physical boundaries to share.

So, that left me in a quandary.

How do I know who I want to be my friends and who wants me to be his or her friend?

Maybe, I thought, as my wife and I went out to dinner for the first time with another couple, we would become friends with two people at once.

Could this, like that famous line in “Casablanca,” be “the beginning of a

beautiful friendship?”

I had no such dramatic hopes, focusing instead on the little stuff: What should I wear, what would we discuss, did we have anything in common — and should I try to order quietly with the waiter while my wife distracted the couple so they didn’t know I was lactose intolerant?

A few moments after we sat down, I realized I didn’t have to speed read through the menu looking for items that my children would tolerate.

The woman from the other couple did the equivalent of shooting layups, as the rest of us listened. She shared stories about the academic and extracurricular interests of her children.

That, I thought as I nodded politely at everything she said, was friendly enough.

Gradually we worked into a comfortable rhythm, even venturing into the potentially treacherous area of national politics. When I brought it up, I knew I ran the risk of talking with someone with incredibly strong opinions that conflicted with my own.

Within seconds, however, it was clear

that all four of us held similar political views.

When the evening ended, the men shook hands and gave social air kisses to the wives. The evening went well; I don’t think I embarrassed myself, my children or my wife. Now, are these people our friends? Not yet, I suppose, but the four of us are, perhaps, friendlier.

As we drove to pick up our son, who was at a late-night party with around 100 of his closest friends that would undoubtedly make him irrational and irascible the next day, I recalled the warnings about the dangers of becoming friends with our kids. They don’t need friends. Rather, what they need are authority figures who can tell them what they don’t want to hear, or so the advice goes.

But, wait, like a good movie where the solution is right in front of my face, I recalled a friendly tip from long ago: It’s important to be friends with the person you are dating. That, I realized, was excellent advice. It’s much easier to share a life with the one out of two people who reciprocates a friendship.

Included were a small tray of appetizers, a fun salad, a larger box with the main course and sides, and a little bag of scrumptious mouthfuls of desserts. Bars at either end of the boat provided white or red wine — or water — to accompany the meal.

All of this played out against a backdrop of quiet dinner music from our talented DJ, who was able to stop and get a bite to eat himself when he was temporarily replaced by the High C’s, a delightful a cappella act.

Drawn from Stony Brook University students, the group harmonized beautifully and was widely praised throughout the evening.

We also viewed a short video of different staff members at work and a slightly longer film clip previewing seven dramatic episodes we will be releasing in two months about the Setauket-based Culper Spy Ring. The video action came to life, as actors in Revolutionary War costumes seemed to leap from the film and began dueling across the ferry’s main cabin. Unlike the AMC popular cable drama, “Turn,” ours will be authentic and will be ac-

cessible through a QR code — that is, a matrix barcode — on our Three Village map. Wait for it until July.

As soon as the formal, albeit brief program was over, we turned the floor loose for dancing. The DJ encouraged guests to rise and “cut the rug,” with his lively music. Some guests drifted outside to the stern or up to the top deck to watch Nature’s spectacular show. While we gladly take credit for the many other logistics of the party that worked, we can only give thanks for the turn the weather did that afternoon. What dawned as a gray and uninspiring day, with a damp chill and the distinct possibility of rain, became sunny and warm. The skies cleared to allow a Hollywoodesque sunset.

As the ferry slowly turned around from its “cruise to nowhere” and reentered the harbor, we were honored to have state Assemblyman Steve Englebright and Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy Jr. offer some deeply appreciated kind words about our newspapers. Comptroller Kennedy brought a proclamation marking the occasion and Assemblyman Englebright, who has been in public office about as long as we have been publishing and hence knows us well, talked about our track record over the years.

It was a lovely finale to what was for us a memorable evening.

Other officials have sent proclamations as well, including Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia on behalf of Huntington, and members of the government of Brookhaven Town, led by Supervisor Ed Romaine. We will be proud to publish them over the next couple of weeks as space allows. As always, news comes first.

I want to offer heartfelt thanks to others who generously contributed to making our party a reality, including our law firm Glynn Mercep and Purcell; John Tsunis, the spark plug behind both the Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook and Gold Coast Bank; and our accountants, Covati &d Jahnsen.
