Smithtown, Kings Park, Hauppauge pass school budgets

Smithtown residents voted on school budgets and board of education candidates May 21.

Smithtown Central School District

The Smithtown school district community passed the 2019-20 budget, 1,995 to 781.

Superintendent James Grossane applauded the passage of the budget.

“We worked very hard with the board of education to create a budget that supports programming for our students and makes sure we can give them the best education possible,” he said. “To have the community support for that is just a wonderful thing.”

Regarding voter turnout, Grossane stated that while he was pleased with the margin of victory,

“we always hope that more and more folks come out.” He also said that the district is looking toward better supporting students emotionally by hiring support staff such as full-time social workers in elementary schools, continuing to add guidance counselors to the middle school and expanding psychological services.

In the election for BOE trustees, Michael Catalanotto defeated Peter Tufo in the race for resigning member Daniel Lynch’s seat, 1,853 to 836. Catalanotto said his three children and the his wife being a teacher inspired him to run. His central initiative is mental health and social media. He sees increasing parental involvement as a way to combat issues concerning social media usage among students, particularly middle-schoolers. He said that this along with looking at the statistics concerning mental health and social media and ways to

limit access to it could be keys to solving its problems, and he looks forward to working on it. His three-year-term begins July 1. For a one-year term effective immediately, Jerry Martusciello defeated Ralph Michele 1,511 to 891 after the resignation of Joanne McElroy.

Kings Park School District

Kings Park residents passed the $93,880,803 budget, Proposition 1, on the ballot, 985 to 376. They also had the opportunity to vote on the creation of a new capital reserve account, Proposition 2, which was approved, 987-363.

Incumbents Pam DeFord and Dan Tew regained their seats n the board, 1,106 and 1,046, respectively. Challenger JP Andrade received 264 votes.

Tew said he looks forward to working with the board as far as bond work and moving the district forward technology-wise, including

making Chromebooks accessible to students to go paperless.

Pam DeFord thanked the community for their support and passing the budget.

“Looking at the numbers, they speak for themselves, they show that the community is happy with what we’re doing so we’ll continue doing what we’re doing, and I look forward to serving the community for the next three years,” DeFord said.

Hauppauge School District

Hauppauge residents passed the $116,054,674 budget, 754-340. Proposition 2 also passed, 833-258, to allow spending from capital reserves for roof replacement at Pines Elementary School and districtwide bathroom reconstruction. BOE incumbents David Barshay, 735 votes, Gary Fortmeyer, 771, and Rob Scarito, 757, retained their seats.

Smithtown seeks appraisals to buy topless bar

The Town of Smithtown is looking to close a deal with the owner of The Oasis club, a business that calls itself “a gentlemen’s club’ located under the railroad trestle across from the town’s iconic bronze bull.

“We’re seeking appraisals,” said Town Attorney Matthew Jakubowski. “It’s going to take some time, if it’s going to happen at all.”

The transaction is part of multifaceted plan to create a swath of parkland along the Nissequogue River where a Suffolk County park vendor currently rents canoes and kayaks.

Since at least 1994, court records show that the town has attempted, so far with limited success, to enact and legally enforce ordinances against The Oasis club that would prevent adult entertainment from being located near parks, playgrounds, schools, churches and residential districts.

The decades-old dispute may ultimately end with the sale of the property.

A privately held company, 490 West Jericho Realty Corp., owns the premises, with Thomas Murray of Pelham Manor named in public documents as owner. The Oasis club has paid its $10,943 tax bill for the first half of 2019 through TJS of New York, a corporation referenced in town and court documents as the club’s owner, with Murray as CEO. He was unable to be reached for comment.

Attorney Howard Greenberg, of Smithtown, who represents the club, said in a

phone interview that his client is working in a coordinated effort with the town, but added that talks are in the early stages and noted that his client is operating a business and not necessarily eager to sell.

“The town board is taking some preliminary measures to potentially purchase the property,” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R) said. “However, this is all contingent on whether we can secure a mutually beneficial idea that was discussed during talks with the County Executive [Steve Bellone (D)] and myself to swap some parkland with the town.”

In an April 4 letter to Suffolk County Attorney Dennis Brown, Jakubowski described exchanging the town-owned Bill Richards Park with county-owned Givens Park, which is adjacent to The Oasis club along the Nissequogue River. The county-owned former Bavarian Inn site along Lake Ronkonkoma is also part of the swap. The exchange, according to the letter, complies with New York State law, but will require special legislation from the New York State Legislature as parkland is involved.

State Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick (R-St. James) said in a phone interview that he expects the parkland swap agreement between the town and county to sail through the Senate and Assembly and is happy to act as a vessel to get the agreement passed as long as the state’s Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation system gives it the thumbs up.

According to the town attorney, Smithtown would continue to contract the county’s kayak vendor once the swap is complete.

Ashley Massaro

Ashley Massaro of Smithtown died on May 16 at the age of 39. Massaro is survived by her daughter Alexa.

The former pro-wrestler, Playboy cover model and television actress, who competed on the popular CBS television show “Survivor,” most recently hosted a Saturday evening radio program called “Shark After Dark” for 94.3 The Shark station.

Suffolk County Police 4th Precinct officers responded at approximately 5:20 a.m.

May 16 to a report of a sick or injured person in Smithtown. Massaro was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Homicide detectives determined the death was noncriminal.

“We are saddened to learn of the tragic death of former WWE superstar Ashley Massaro,” World Wrestling Entertainment said in a statement. “WWE offers its condolences to Ashley’s family and friends.”

Massaro, originally from Babylon, graduated from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in the Town of Huntington and The State University of New York at Albany. At the age 25, she was chosen

by WWE after its nationwide search for a female performer. Massaro performed for WWE wrestling circuit from 2005 to 2008 and posed for Playboy in 2007.

In the same year, Massaro, then an East Northport resident, became a contestant on the television show “Survivor.”

The day before she died, Massaro announced on Twitter, “Just answered a ton of fan mail so you guys should be receiving them soon! Love ya punx.”

Massaro was preparing to return to the ring, according to her March 20 Twitter post: “Gonna be bumping around the ring starting next week at @NYWCWRESTLING super pumped n ready to see what I got left in these ole boots of mine!”

Services were held Sunday, May 19, at the Branch Funeral Home in Smithtown.

St. James designated a Cultural Arts District

Since then, the community has pulled together and this past Sunday it became official. St. James is a Cultural Arts District, a designation that is the first step in Smithtown’s revitalization plan for the hamlet.

The event coincided with St. James’ first annual Art Walk, where Lake Avenue was closed to vehicular traffic from the train station to Woodlawn Avenue and open only to pedestrians. Community artists — painters,

potters, sculptors and musicians — set up roadside canopies, where they demonstrated and displayed their work for the inauguration of things to come.

“The stars have aligned,” said Natalie Weinstein, master of ceremonies at Sunday’s ribbon cutting. “We thank Ed Wehrheim and all the people at Town Hall for making it happen.”

The project is planned mainly for 2020.

“I’m happy to see our sister community of St. James support the idea of cultural enrichment,” N.Y. State Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) said. “I’m impressed by the art theme. It’s a proven formula for revitalization.”

Finding common ground at Town Hall Girl Scout Troop 3006 got the VIP tour of Town Hall as they earned their Finding Common Ground badge.

The tour began with learning how the town clerk, tax receiver, town council and supervisor’s offices operate. The town attorneys Martin Simon and Jennifer Juengst, Youth Bureau’s Karen Aldrich and Park Ranger Joseph Auguliaro were also on hand to share day-in-thelife details about their respective departments.

Troop members asked questions about local government operations and learned the differences between town employees and elected officials. The troop also learned about the importance of volunteering in their community and how to receive community service credit as part of school requirements.

Forum offers ideas on how to reduce stress in children

Community spirits thrives

Always looking to make a connection with those outside of their school, the fourth-grade members of the Cares Club at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District spent the afternoon of May 15 gardening with the senior residents at St. James Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Walking from their school across to the center, students were ready with their shovels and smiles as they worked in the outdoor patio garden of the center alongside the seniors. The students have been carrying on this planting tradition for the past 18 years.

Anxiety is unfortunately an increasingly common mental condition among children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and local experts offered their advice on the topic recently at a Harbor Country Day School public forum.

Nearly 150 parents and caregivers from Smithtown, Setauket, Port Jefferson and surrounding communities attended the May 7 event entitled Stress and Anxiety in Children and Teens: How to Help Your Child Thrive in the World Today.

The panel of mental health experts spoke candidly about the prevalence of stress and anxiety in children and adolescents, expectations and demands children and adolescents are facing today, warning signs for parents and caregivers and steps that parents can take to help their children navigate the pressures of the world in which we live.

“Like all schools, our focus at Harbor Country Day School is on the children and giving them the best educational experience we possibly can,” said Harbor Country Day Head of School John Cissel. “But what’s unique about Harbor is that we spend a tremendous

amount of time, energy, and resources on our students’ social-emotional health, both through a formal Social-Emotional Learning Program and, perhaps even more important, in the ways we teach and interact with our students on a daily basis.”

Cissel continued, “As an extension of that mission, we want to be a resource for Harbor parents, and for people in the community, when it comes to topics related to children’s and adults’ social-emotional wellness, parenting concerns, and educational trends and developments. We hope our Speaker Series events provide parents and caregivers with the information they need in those areas and more.”

This event marked the fourth in a series of annual events hosted by Harbor Country Day School, called the HCDS Speaker Series, in which the school brings in experts to discuss topics related to parenting, education and child and adolescent health and wellness.

Time for solutions to immigration divisions Why do we have to relearn lessons over and over, despite history telling us what works? Take immigration, the fiery topic du jour. Everyone holds a strong, increasingly entrenched, unmovable opinion about how to stem illegal immigration, protect America’s moral and historic immigrant commitment, preserve moral fiber and do right by those brought to the United States illegally as children. But what is the right answer?

The right answer is a default to common sense. Go back just over 30 years. Former Republican President Ronald Reagan and former Democratic U.S. Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill found room for agreement, in their time, on this contentious topic. The former “Gang of Eight,” including late Sen. John McCain (R), got close with a bill that passed the Senate but lost in a Republican House. So why can’t we?

America is — by definition and moral conviction — a country founded on immigration, with legal limits for various countries, practices, protocols and a complex fabric of legal obligations tied to those seeking asylum, refugee status or wishing otherwise to enter and live in the United States, make a better life for themselves and aspire to citizenship.

Perhaps, oddly in a time of constant recrimination, instant outrage and emotional appeals for walls and sanctuary cities, my view is that there are still compromises available.

They should be patiently sought, brought to the public for buy in, feedback and persuasion, then turned into law, just the way Reagan and O’Neill got to the “80 percent solution” more than three decades ago.

The real question is not whether we should build cement or electronic barriers along parts of our southern border, whether we should return criminals to host countries, whether to protect young lives at our border and act humanely, whether to protect our sovereignty, territorial integrity, national security and the sanctity of citizenship. These are false choices.

Remember our freedom

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution specifically protects the practice of religion in this country. While there have been few exceptions to this rule, mostly in cases where a religion may lead to harm, it has constantly and clearly protected the rights of people to practice in the way they see fit.

When a recent story by TBR News Media broke on social media, based on several readers’ comments, it looked like many people were confused when it came to freedom of religion.

The article reported on a Stony Brook University graduate wearing a turban, who was refused admission into a Port Jefferson restaurant because the establishment has a noheadgear policy on Friday and Saturday nights. The manager was allegedly sticking to the restaurant’s policy, while either being unaware or ignoring the unconstitutionality of refusing a person service based on religious attire. The customer in question practices Sikhism, where males wear turbans as articles of faith in public.

While the restaurant owner said he would change the rule, the event and comments on social media showcase a particular ignorance of the most foundational law in the U.S. Unfortunately, many readers have said they thought the manager had the right to make the call and refuse the graduate service.

They are wrong. Our Constitution protects our expression of religion, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaws discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin — or religion. Whether a Sikh is wearing a turban, or a Jewish man is wearing a yarmulke, they cannot be asked to remove their head covering in order to get a drink or something to eat, just like service can’t be denied to a nun in her habit or a Muslim woman wearing a hijab.

Freedom of religion in this country even protects employees of that restaurant and other businesses when it comes to practicing their religions. State and federal laws, unless causing undue hardship on the operation of business, require employers to make accommodations, within reason, for workers whether they need a break to pray or take a day off to observe their Sabbath or celebrate a religious holiday. The employer may ask them to make up the hours, but they can’t deny an employee time off for religious reasons unless it will be detrimental to a business, for example, due to a small staff. So, whether a Christian can’t work Sundays, or a Muslim needs to take a break to pray, an employer cannot dissuade them from doing so.

Employers must also allow dress and grooming practices that employees follow for religious reasons, including not only head coverings but certain hairstyles or facial hair such as the Sikh beard. So, as Americans, whether it’s as a customer or an employee, we are free to practice our religions.

Sikhs have been active in the U.S. Armed Forces, where they have been given special exception to wear turbans, while remaining as dedicated as any other service member. As we celebrate Memorial Day, May 27, remembering those who died to protect our rights, let us also not forget the principles that are being protected.

Commercial GPS mandate will save lives In April 2018, a charter bus carrying 38 students and five chaperones crashed into a low overpass on the Southern State Parkway, seriously injuring several teens and sending others to the hospital. Unfortunately, this was not the first crash nor was it the last.

Over the years, buses striking overpasses have become commonplace on Long Island’s parkways. The issue?

Outdated infrastructure not suitable to the taller trucks and buses of today, errors on the part of bus companies, the drivers who fail to abide by rules meant to keep them off parkways, and out-of-state drivers oft general unfamiliarity with Long Island.

There are legislative changes that New York State can make to prevent these tragedies from taking place again. One, is

my bill to require a commercial GPS device in charter buses. As I write this, the State Senate is set to vote on this bill, which would provide an important safety tool for charter bus drivers.

Many of the horrific crashes that we’ve seen were the result of drivers using GPS devices intended for passenger vehicles.

Passenger GPS devices fail to detect low overpasses on the parkways, a unique and ever-present characteristic across Long Island’s parkways.

My bill will fix this by requiring charter buses to use commercial GPS, which alerts drivers to low overpasses, and properly divert the buses to a safe route. It will prevent tragic accidents like the ones that have become too common on the Northern State

and Southern State parkways in recent years and ensure the safety of bus passengers.

Other measures like warning signs and the installation of an electronic warning system along parkway entrances are smart and should be expanded. But drivers need to bear responsibility, particularly when they are carrying buses full of passengers, sometimes students. An inexpensive commercial GPS system will warn drivers about safer routes and low overpasses.

The bottom line is overpass hits need to stop. And this critical step by the State Senate will go a long way toward making Long Island’s roads safer.

Questions for the posse of presidential candidates

s I write, we are 530 days away from the 2020 election. It’s nice that so many people want to lead this nation. Notwithstanding William Weld, the former Massachusetts governor who is a GOP challenger, it seems clear that the Republican nominee will be President Donald Trump, while the Democratic nominee could come from any of at least 23 candidates — D. None and counting. of the above I’d like to ask these candidates a

1. How will you try to unify the nation?

Clearly, we are a divided country. We can’t agree

on anything from abortion to gay marriage to the job Trump is currently doing. We have become the Divided States of America. That doesn’t sit well with those of us who have enjoyed the benefits of a country pulling together through so many crises and conflicts, and who have appreciated the opportunity to travel from state to state, feeling like a part of something that spreads from sea to shining sea — and to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. What will you do in the interest of unity?

2. Is there any way to bring the world closer together? If an extraterrestrial force landed today and threatened society, we would set aside our geographic and historic squabbles, and work together to understand this new species and protect ourselves. Why would it take such a threat to unify humans?

Is there any way to spread peace, while allowing for differences? If you believe peace is possible, in what turbulent area would you start and how would you bring any two sides together?

3. Can we establish any political rules? It seems that the old days of agreeing to disagree or civil discourse are gone. Were those measured words and polite disagreements a matter of political correctness and do some candidates benefit from attacking each other?

Would all of the candidates agree to a level of respect for each other, for the process and for the American populace?

4. What kind of role model will you be as president? Can you lay out any rules you would follow as president, in terms of what you would do and what you wouldn’t, as our leader? What should the penalty be for you if you don’t follow your own rules?

5. How will you measure your own success?

It’s so easy to declare yourself a winner and to tell the country and the world what a great success you are. So many of you will run under the banner of bringing change or steering the nation toward a better or, some might say, great future. Don’t just tell us you’re wonderful, give us an idea of how to recognize it. What metrics

will you use to know that you’re successful? Are the polls more important, or is the economy, the stock market or anything else a good barometer of your success?

6. What will you offer children that they don’t get now? Parents often care more about their children than they do about themselves.

What will you do to make schools, food choices, activities or other options better for children than they are today?

7. How will you protect our elections? It’s clear that other nations feel like they can influence our elections. What can you do to ensure that the process proceeds as it should?

8. What’s wonderful or great about your spouse or partner? What do you admire about this person and what is one of your favorite memories with him or her?

9. Do the ends justify the means? Is it as important to ensure that the journey obeys certain rules and that the country follows a specific compass, or is it acceptable to get to the final destination by any means necessary?

oday, May 23, is the birthday of Margaret Fuller. She would be 209 years old. I don’t know if you have ever heard of her. I hadn’t really, maybe vaguely.

She was actually born Sarah Margaret Fuller, named after both her grandmothers, until she dropped the first name at age 9. She was in other ways a precocious child, too, the oldest of Massachusetts lawyer and Congressman Timothy Fuller’s children, and he taught her to read and write before age 4. Fuller, a Harvard grad, was such a stern teacher that he forbade Between her reading sentiyou and me mental novels and

classical education — indeed a rarity for a woman at that time.

Margaret Fuller grew up expecting to be exceptional, and she was: as a journalist, editor, literary critic and women’s rights advocate. She strenuously protested slavery, homelessness and other injustices. She advocated for education for women. She also was reputed to be the best read person in all of New England. She was the only woman allowed to use the Harvard library for her research. Her breakthrough book was “Woman in the Nineteenth Century,” considered the first major feminist work in the United States, and she was friends and the intellectual equal of such luminaries as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne — said to have modeled Hester Prynne after her, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and admired by Edgar Allan Poe. She died in 1850 at age 40 in a shipwreck off Fire Island, with her Italian count husband — if they ever married — and 2-year-old son, within sight of the shoreline. Her ship, the Elizabeth, ran aground on a sandbar as it was being captained by the first mate. The event

wrote a book called “Shipwreck of Hopes,” about the ship Elizabeth, and although this is fiction, the author spent a great deal of time getting the historic context right. She traveled to Harvard, poured over original letters and manuscripts, and otherwise discovered that there were thousands of shipwrecks off the Fire Island coast. Yes, thousands! This just happened to be one of them, and this one carried a famous passenger.

It is a wonderful thing that we can listen to a writer discuss his or, in this instance, her book and all that went into the writing, dressed in our daytime suburban-casual clothes, enjoying other community members similarly gathered and even a little homemade carrot cake on a given Monday night. In the process we learned some local history and met two worthy women: Margaret Fuller and Angela Reich.

We live in a terrific place where such delights — theater, music, documentaries, political debates and book discussions — frequently happen. All we have to do is get off the sofa after dinner and go to them. It’s often hard but so worth the effort.
