Smithtown Passes Zone Changes on Storage Warehouses

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Town of Smithtown officials at a March 19 meeting approved zoning changes that would allow storage warehouses to be built up to a height of 35 feet in the municipality. The downtown business district is excluded from the change.

Officials have said the law is meant to keep storage facilities in the industrial districts of Smithtown instead of the downtown area,

which is usually filled with businesses.

Residents and civic leaders expressed concern that the change could lead to an abundance of storage facilities in the area.

The previous measure on these facilities set a maximum height of 24 feet.

Currently, Smithtown has close to 10 ministorage facilities.

Also, at the meeting, the town board approved a site plan application for 58 additional parking spaces at Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center in Commack.

Ongoing litigation between the Nissequogue River State Park Foundation and a number of state agencies has been postponed as the COVID-19 crisis intensifies.

In December 2019, lawyers for the foundation and its chairman, John McQuaid, filed a suit in state Supreme Court in Riverhead questioning the legality and siting of a planned 30,000-square-foot Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Fish, Wildlife, and Marine Resources building in the park. The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation was also named in the lawsuit.

In addition, the suit called for a detailed environmental impact study for the proposed project as well as argued that the state Legislature could transfer the land from the Office of Parks to the DEC. Last month construction workers cut down trees and began prepping the ground for

additional foundation and building work. The suit’s last courtroom hearing was March 12.

The next date in court has yet to be determined.

“We still hold the belief that what they are doing is illegal by taking part of the parkland,” McQuaid said.

Civic leaders, Town of Smithtown officials and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) attended a Dec. 2019 Smithtown rally in support of the project.

According to Smithtown and county officials, the state project is expected to be an economic boost that would bring in approximately 500 construction jobs, 100 permanent positions, plus the added yearround police presence in the state park.

McQuaid said if the park had a master plan they probably wouldn’t be in this predicament.

There was legislation last year sponsored by Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) and Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) that would have required state parks’ officials begin a master plan for the park, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) vetoed the bill Jan 1.

SUNY Announces SBU’s Sixth President, Second Woman to Serve

After a months-long search, a new president has been chosen for Stony Brook University.

Maurie McInnis, currently executive vice president and provost at the University of Texas at Austin and a renowned cultural historian, was named SBU’s sixth president. Merryl Tisch, State University of New York Board of Trustees chairman, and SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson made the announcement March 26.

“This is an exciting moment for Stony Brook, and I’m confident Dr. Maurie McInnis will take the university to even greater heights in its unique role in fostering innovation, creativity and research that impacts the state, country and the world,” Johnson said in a news release.

McInnis will take over the role July 1.

Michael Bernstein has been serving as interim president since last summer’s departure of Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., who took on the post of Michigan State University president.

As chief executive for SBU, McInnis will also oversee Stony Brook Medicine.

“It is now as important as ever to support all our campuses with strong and proven leaders who can quickly navigate challenges, such as the impact of the coronavirus, and keep our students on a path to the world-class higher education they expect,” Tisch said in the release. “Dr. Maurie McInnis has demonstrated experience and the characteristics of such a leader, and we are entrusting her to lead and inspire the students and faculty of Stony Brook University for years to come.”

McInnis is SBU’s second female president.

Shirley Strum Kenny headed up the university from 1994 to 2009 after serving as president of Queens College from 1985 to 1994.

As the chief academic officer for UT Austin, McInnis leads strategic planning. Her responsibilities include academic programs and initiatives across 18 colleges and schools, budgeting for the university’s academic division and managing $1.8 billion of the institution’s $3.1 billion budget. She is also involved in the university’s fundraising efforts, leading a team of development officers.

McInnis said in the press release she was honored by the opportunity to lead an institution that is “both at the forefront of groundbreaking research and committed to advancing the American Dream.”

“The critical issues we face today have made it even more clear the important role higher education plays in educating tomorrow’s leaders and tackling today’s challenges by fostering cross-disciplinary research,” she said. “At higher education institutions, our responsibility is not just to admit students but to give them the tools to succeed throughout their collegiate careers and after graduation.”

McInnis earned her bachelor’s degree with highest distinction in art history from University of Virginia and received her master’s degree and doctorate in art history from Yale University.

She is married with two children.

around the politics involved in slavery. McInnis is one of the authors of “Educated in Tyranny,” which takes a look at the largely unknown story of slavery at the University of Virginia.

In a video posted to SBU’s YouTube page, McInnis applauded Bernstein’s service, especially in the last few weeks as SBU has been on the frontlines fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

“He has been an inspirational steward in this extraordinary upheaval, and we all owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude,” McInnis said in the video.

She complimented how Stony Brook Medicine has responded during the crisis and how SBU has been helping to ensure

the academic continuity of its students. The incoming president also praised how the SBU campus and local community have been working together during the pandemic.

“This is a team that I want to be part of, and I look forward to joining you this summer with my husband and two children,” she said.

McInnis added that with such an announcement she normally would be meeting members of the university community but couldn’t because of the current COVID-19 precautions.

“I so look forward to meeting you all in person,” McInnis said. “And if not shaking your hand, at least elbow bumping because at that moment we will be on the other side of this unprecedented public health crisis.”

“It would very much be my hope and expectation that Turner would be utilizing local businesses for supplies and labor to complete this project,” he said.

Separately, Stony Brook University said the manufacturer Battelle has deployed to SBU its Critical Care Decontamination System, which will allow the university to reuse N95 masks, among other personal

protective equipment. The Battelle system will start decontaminating up to 80,000 masks per day by the end of this week.

Before decontaminating the masks, people will inspect them to make sure masks with rips, tears, makeup or other fluids don’t go through the process.

SBU Hospital Extension Slated for April 18 Completion

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $50 million contract to New Yorkbased Turner construction company to begin building a hospital extension to handle the expected surge in hospital demand in the next few weeks amid the coronavirus pandemic.

With assistance from Suffolk County contractors and subcontractors, Turner will begin building the facility immediately and is expected to complete construction by April 18.

Stony Brook University Hospital and other area medical care facilities will use the hospital extension for patients who have come to the hospital for health care issues that don’t involve COVID-19, freeing up bed space in the main hospital and in other centers to treat patients with the virus. The construction of the 1,000-bed facility is part of the effort by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to double the number of hospital beds throughout the state within the next few weeks.

Construction on the hospital extension will start “right away,” said U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY1), a member of the bipartisan Congressional Coronavirus Task Force. The Army Corps of Engineers has been “getting a running start on this project,” he said.

Zeldin is pleased that Anthony Ciorra, a senior program manager for the Army Corps of Engineers, will be working closely on the project. Ciorra is someone Zeldin has “interacted with very frequently,” the congressman said, adding the program manager is “intimately familiar with the 1st Congressional District. He has been a great resource throughout the years” and is able to cut through the red tape and get the job done.

Ciorra will be working under Col. Thomas Asbery, who is the commander of the Army Corp’s New York District.

“Both of them have played an instrumental role in getting this to the point where it’s at right now,” Zeldin said. The congressman said he expected local companies to contribute to the new construction.

Suffolk BSA Troop Female Units Look to Grow

It’s been more than a year since the Boy Scouts of America became Scouts BSA, inviting girls to join separate, gender-specific units and earn the Eagle Scout rank. Since then female troop units have been popping up along the North Shore.

In the Three Village area, Setauket mom Megan Larsen recently established Troop 355.

She said the number is a nod to the famous Culper Spy Ring as “355” was the code for lady. It’s believed the spies used 355 in code to refer to Anna Strong Smith who reportedly hung clothes on a line to send signals to those in the spy ring.

“It’s just a nod to our district and to our local history,” the troop leader said.

Larsen’s 13-year-old daughter Emma belonged to BSA girl unit Troop 2019 in Sound Beach when the family lived in Mount Sinai.

When they moved to Setauket at the end of June, they continued with the unit, but Larsen said it was difficult to keep up with the drive with schoolwork and other activities.

Larsen said the BSA community is tight knit, and she has been receiving a lot of help from other troop leaders. Her husband, Eric, who grew up in Setauket, was involved with the local Boy Scout Troop 70 for years and was even a Venturing crew leader. He would take Emma to meetings, and when she was a toddler, she even had a Troop 70 T-shirt.

“It was sort of foreshadowing,” Megan Larsen said.

What does it take to start an all-girls BSA troop? The 355 troop leader said once a prospective leader goes to the BSA council to file paperwork and it’s approved, it’s then up to the leader to invite the community to join. On Feb. 23, she held an open house to introduce

girls to the organization, and said they received a lot of help from Troop 70. Many local units, both boys and girls, also joined them in last year’s Three Village Electric Holiday Parade.

When her daughters, who include 8-yearold Audrey, showed an interest in the BSA, their mother decided to have them join. Her 10-year-old son Peter is a Cub Scout.

“I saw the positive impact that it had on my husband’s life,” she said, adding she was especially impressed with the friendships formed and public-speaking skills the boys gained.

While Emma has belonged to the Girl Scouts, Larsen said Scouts BSA was a better fit for her daughter who loves whittling, kayaking and camping.

Larsen said she can understand how teenage girls may be hesitant to join something until they see their peers are a part of it.

“It’s new, and I think a lot of times girls are a little hesitant because they don’t know it’s out there, or they want to see other girls doing it first,” she said.

Troop leader Ann Colletta from Sound Beach Troop 2019 said she was on board with the idea of girls in the Scouts since it was announced.

She currently has 11 girls in her unit, and she sits on the committee in her district.

“I thought it was a great idea,” she said. “I had my reservations at first because I wasn’t sure how it would work out.”

She said once she learned more about it she realized it was what her daughter June had been wanting.

Colletta said while it may seem like a leap of faith to start up a girl unit, she agreed with Larsen that other leaders, as well as boy units, have been helpful. She added when her troop originally started, it was the boys in BSA who taught the girls different skills and were welcoming and helpful.

when younger girls come in the girls can teach them,” Colletta said.

The mother of seven children, who has experience with both BSA and Girl Scouts of the USA, said her 12-year-old daughter, who is also a GSA member, wanted to do the same things as her 17-year-old brother Peter, who become an Eagle Scout. Colletta said she knows what BSA can do for children as her son was shy, and she has watched him blossom.

“We’re outdoor oriented,” Colletta said.

“She wanted to do the same thing as him, go to summer camps and go camping.”

Craig Rome, who heads up Troop 539G in Kings Park, said he’s always willing to help other troop leaders and has found many to be helpful in spreading the word about the female units.

His girl unit, which has 17 members, will celebrate its first anniversary April 15, even though a celebration is on hold until after the current COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Like Colletta, he has found that many of the girls enjoy the outdoor activities that BSA offers. He said in addition to outdoor events, the Scouts offer community service opportunities, first-aid skills, archery and more, as well as foster leadership. Meetings are led by the Scouts themselves, and he feels it’s great to have the girls exposed to the same leadership roles as the boys, adding that young women can be part of both the BSA and GSA like his daughter Emma who started in Girl Scouts.

Since she has joined BSA, he said he has noticed a difference in his daughter, watching her now encouraged to take on leadership roles.

“I think she enjoys leadership,” he said.

Rome said that, at first, they had four or five girls, siblings of boys already in the male unit. But after putting announcements out in the school, more girls joined, and he said he thinks there was a pent-up demand. Now after seeing the impact it’s had on these children, he said he wished the BSA had done it sooner, and

when people ask him if he thinks BSA works for girls, he said he finds it does.

“The energy level that these girls have is incredible,” he said. “It really put a smile on your face when you saw them get together and form the troop.”

Tammy Campagnola-Levinsky has also had a positive experience as a troop leader. Since last year, 218G in Melville has grown from five to 13, and her 18-year-old daughter, Summer, who had wanted to become one since she was 7 years old is one of the Scouts.

Campagnola-Levinsky said one opportunity the girls have is an extension to become an Eagle Scout, which is also offered to the boys.

Usually, a Scout must achieve the rank by 17 but an extension can be requested.

Like many girls, her daughter has become involved in activities such as camping, meeting elected officials and traveling since joining BSA, something she may not have done outside of the organization. Her daughter has also become involved in BSA’s National Youth Leadership Training.

“It’s her passion,” the troop leader said.

“It’s her driving force.”

Since there’s such a lack of these allfemale troops, Troop 218G has members from Nassau County and the South Shore. Rome and Campagnola-Levinsky said every Scout, whether a boy or girl, should visit different units to see how they operate since each unit can have a different style or focus. Campagnola-Levinsky pointed out that sometimes members of a Cub Scout Pack may even go on to different units.

“Scouting to me is one of the life lessons that you will take all the way through adulthood and it just doesn’t apply to scouting but your life forward — family, friends, job,” Campagnola-Levinsky said. “So, the skills you learn are lifetime skills, and you want them to be comfortable in the environment they are in and like the unit they are with.”

Mattera Selected to Run for Flanagan’s Seat

Mario Mattera, a St. James resident, local union official and Suffolk County Water Authority board member, has been tapped by Suffolk County Republicans to run for the seat being vacated by state Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport).

The announcement came five days after the longtime senator announced he won’t run for reelection after 18 years in the state Senate and 16 years in the state Assembly.

Mattera has been a member of Plumbers Local Union 200 for the past 25 years and is currently the business agent for the union. He said he is honored by the selection and is dedicated to fighting for the “working men and women of Long Island.”

“I want to thank the GOP for having the confidence in me,” he said. “It is not going to be easy to fill John Flanagan’s shoes. I want to bring a commonsense voice to the Senate and be an advocate for Long Island families.”

The St. James resident said his focus right now is making sure the coronavirus is defeated on Long Island and making sure health care workers are well protected and equipped to fight the disease.

If elected, Mattera said he would focus on a number of issues, one of them being bail reform.

Republicans across the board have called for the law’s removal. Another issue would be creating

jobs in the district and prevent young people from leaving.

The union official said he looks at construction jobs and blue-collar positions as the “backbone of the economy” and wants to make sure they can attain a livable wage and afford to live in the county.

This will not be Mattera’s first attempt at elected office. In 2013, he ran unsuccessfully in the Republican Primary against current county Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga).

Suffolk County Republican Committee chairman, Jesse Garcia, believes Mattera has the experience to follow “a great leader” like Flanagan.

“Mario shares our fierce Long Island values,” Garcia said. “He will be a great candidate for the people of Suffolk County.”

In addition, the chairman said the St. James resident is a go-getter and will be able to work across the table with Democrats in the Senate.

Garcia acknowledged that this race and the one for the vacated seat of Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) are important in the party’s quest to regain control of the Senate from the Democrats.

He said getting Mattera and Anthony Palumbo (R-New Suffolk), a state assemblyman who is running for LaValle’s seat, elected would help their chances. Ed Romaine (R), Brookhaven

Town supervisor, said he has great respect for Flanagan and is “saddened” that New York will not continue to have his leadership in Albany. But he thinks Mattera is the right choice for the seat.

“He has been in the union for many years, and he’s fought for the working people,” he said.

The Brookhaven supervisor said he is concerned about the Democratic majority in the Senate, saying he is worried that Long island will not have a strong voice. He added that up in Albany there has been a shift toward New York City interests, and it has gone away from a suburban interest.

“If anyone can change them, it would be Mario,” Romaine said. “He’s got the energy and will get along with everyone.”

The race for the 2nd Senate District will slate Mattera against Democratic candidate Mike Siderakis, a retired state trooper from Setauket.

Republicans lost control of the state Senate in 2018, dropping to a 40-23 minority. From 2015-18, Flanagan served as the majority leader of the Senate.

Mattera said he has a good relationship with Flanagan and LaValle and called them both mentors to him.

“Mario will fight back against one-party control in Albany and will be a driving force to help move our economy in the right direction,” Flanagan said in a statement. “I am proud to endorse Mario Mattera to represent the people of the 2nd Senate District.”

The Stony Brook School Comes Up with a Solution for Face Shield Shortage In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and shortage of materials hospitals are facing, a small group of high school students and faculty from The Stony Brook School have come up with a solution that can be produced in their STEM lab and, soon, across the country — protective face shields at a fraction of the originally expected time and cost, according to a press release from the private school.

Stony Brook University Hospital recently reached out to the surrounding community to secure usage of 3-D printers to produce face shields. The hospital, whose design would take approximately 3½ hours per shield, sought to commission 5,000 shields per usable printer.

When The Stony Brook School was alerted of this, Stan Winston, director of STEM Education, and Jeremy Donovan, STEM teacher, thought they could come up

with a much more efficient solution with the help of their highly skilled students. In a little over 24 hours, Winston had presented the idea to his classes — in virtual classrooms since the outbreak of the pandemic — and a prototype was made.

After three major roadblocks were overcome by the students, a final solution was found. In lieu of a time-intensive 3-D print, a face shield constructed with the STEM lab’s laser cutter could be made in just 35 seconds.

With the new design and process, about 100 can be made each hour at a cost of under 50 cents each, and the school will be producing at least 5,000 of them for SBU Hospital.

Students instrumental in coming up with this solution were Stony Brook School sophomores Cole Spier and Tiger Winston and junior Ethan Magnuson.

In his March 27 daily COVID-19 address, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said the current pandemic will test the mettle of all residents, potentially shaping their person in the long road ahead.

“This is a moment that forges character, forges people, changes people, makes them stronger, makes them weaker, but this is a moment that will change character,” he said.

As we look around our coverage area, especially at the business owners, we can’t help but hope this crisis will make our communities stronger.

It would have been easy for many owners to just shut their doors when multiple executive orders paused nonessential businesses from offering their services, while requiring restaurants to stop sit-down service for the time being. With many still recovering a few years after the last recession, some are still dealing with low reserve funds, and while federal relief is being made available for small businesses, some owners wonder if the help will be enough.

However, most are being resilient — doing everything in their power to keep offering services to their communities.

They aren’t looking at their bank accounts and saying, “We can’t do this in this environment,” they are saying they will do their best.

Restaurants are adapting to the new climate providing curbside pickup and amping up their deliveries, including those who didn’t offer these options in the past. With their finger on the pulse of residents’ needs, they are also offering specials giving patrons a choice of a certain number of trays of food at a value price, so a customer can pick up a meal one night and feed their family for a couple of days.

But even more than that, there are several examples of restaurants giving back to the community by offering free or discounted meals to the elderly, homebound and health care workers. Multiple businesses in Port Jeff have started delivering meals to local hospitals, aided by the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and Port Jeff Business Improvement District.

Dancing schools, martial arts and yoga studios, as well as other fitness centers, are posting instructional videos to their websites and offering classes via Zoom, Facebook Live or other platforms. Even on-site tutoring businesses have embraced online tools to stay in touch with students and help parents with the current homeschooling situation.

These innovative ideas will help increase the owners’ chances of keeping their doors open once America comes out on the other side of this pandemic. It’s allowed them to keep on some of their staff members and will hopefully allow them to hire back those they had to lay off. It will keep their business names on residents’ minds.

The current challenges facing the business community can be an opportunity for them to grow, and many owners are realizing this. Small businesses are the heart and soul of our towns on Long Island. Thank you to the owners and their staffs for doing everything in their power to keep our communities’ hearts beating and souls hopeful.

In the editorial “Leaders in Time of Crisis” in the March 26 edition of The Village Times Herald, we were told, very reasonably in my opinion, that we have a need for clear leadership, which must be precise, meaningful and factual. Thankfully, we were told, we are fortunate to have some officials who are doing just that.

Imagine my amazement when I found that the ensuing paragraphs contained not a single reference to our president, Donald J. Trump (R), but were instead devoted to the accomplishments of our governor, Andrew Cuomo (D), and our county executive, Steve Bellone (D).

Fortunately, no space was devoted to the contributions of the mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio (D), or his commissioner of health, Dr. Oxiris Barbot (D), both of whom were among the last people on the planet to recognize the severity of the COVID-19 problem.

of the presentations given by Cuomo, although I find being lectured by the entitled son of a former governor more than a little tedious, to say the least. One hopes that he is sincere in his stated desire to help the people of New York during this period of great tribulation.

However, I cannot help but reflect on his misguided efforts to reduce carbon emissions while quixotically banning fracking and closing the Indian Point nuclear power plant station, choosing instead to put all of the eggs of the people of New York into the basket of windmills and solar cells, which may give cause for concern regarding his clarity when dealing with large problems.

Another development resulting from the current crisis seems to be the virtual disappearance of the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden (D), who has apparently retreated into the basement of his home

to practice social distancing. It has been speculated that many of the Democratic Party intelligentsia are beginning to wonder if Joe might be better off finding other things to do. For example, he told us that, after leaving his vice president’s job, he became a professor, and he might find taking up that position to be a bit less challenging than being our next president. And who might be a better choice to take Joe’s place than the current governor of New York, namely Cuomo?

Of course, there may be a few small skeletons in the Cuomo closet that need to be cleaned out, such as the Buffalo Billion, the cancellation of the Moreland Commission’s corruption investigation and his questionable acceptance of donations from political appointees, to name a few pesky situations. It should be entertaining, to say the least, to see what happens in that regard.

The Content of a Person’s Character The content of a person’s character can be measured by how they act or react during times of crisis. In the wake of the latest and worst biomedical/economic debacle, courtesy of Communist China, it is abundantly clear that too many of us around here can talk the talk but, when the chips are down, humanity and civility are the first to go.

Our local supermarket in Setauket, home to so many of the “affluent, enlightened and educated” served as a perfect living laboratory in recent days.

Driving through the parking lot, one can glean quite a bit from the bumper stickers on the parked cars: “I vote to end hunger,” “Coexist” as well as many iterations of the

“Peace” theme are just a few examples.

What I witnessed, once inside the store, abruptly put an end to such idealistic aphorisms. What I encountered was a scene straight out of a Soviet food store circa 1975. The unbridled orgy of panic-buying left the shelves denuded, except for a few potatoes or a lonely sausage. Chicken?

Sorry, comrade, come back next week, maybe we get more, OK? Disgusting. I managed to escape with one onion, a jar of pickles and a pound of potato salad. No problem, helps to build character.

Literally every other person I know who is not in the health care or education industries is out of work now, as in “no income.” There is good news, however.

Our carbon footprint (LOL) has greatly diminished as auto traffic is down over 50 per cent, as there are less jobs, and no restaurants open to drive to. “‘Income inequality” (LOL) has also been addressed, as many in the middle and working classes are getting poor, fast. Last but not least, those low-information CNN/ NBC believers willing to risk worldwide depression, disease and despair, in a last-ditch effort to destroy our fantastic President Donald Trump (R) are advised to begin stockpiling the tranquilizers and digitalis. Represent President’s Work During Crisis It’s too bad your editorial lauding the response of Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to the coronavirus pandemic didn’t mention the generous bipartisan help New York State has received from President Donald Trump (R). There’s been little Trump’s denied to the man who, for over three years, has been one of the president’s harshest and most outspoken critics.

Please remember that because of the

president’s help our federal government’s Army Corps of Engineers, along with the New York National Guard converted the Javits Center into a makeshift hospital that can accommodate 2,500 patients. The USNS Comfort, a Navy hospital ship, will be in New York harbor “loaded up to the top with medical supplies” has come in well ahead of schedule, and about 4,400 ventilators have been delivered. And there

are now, with Trump’s quick approval, another four temporary hospitals in the works, making a total of eight.

Given all that, plus the multiple times Cuomo has recently and rightfully publicly praised Trump, it would have been nice to read just some of those kind words in your editorial.

A Lighthearted Look at Life BC and AC

isclaimer: The following column is intended to provide a lighthearted response to the ongoing pandemic. In no way does it diminish or ignore the suffering or the unimaginable horror for people who have lost loved ones or who are on the front lines of the crisis. I continue to be grateful for all the help, support, and work everyone is doing to keep us safe, fed, and cared for (see last week’s D. None column). This latest column, however, of the above is designed to offer

I was thinking about how life has changed in small, and largely insignificant ways. Please find below some “before coronavirus” and “after coronavirus” trivial differences for those of

us fortunate enough to be inconvenienced and not irreparably harmed by the virus and when we’re not focused on the anxiety of shuttered businesses and lost income.

Where should we eat?

BC: Do you want to go to the Italian restaurant with the cool music and the frescoes on the wall, or the Chinese restaurant, with the incredible dumplings and the endless supply of hot tea?

AC: Should we go back to the kitchen, the dining room or the bedroom, where there are so many leftover crumbs that we could eat those for dinner without going to the refrigerator?

What should we wear?

BC: We could take the newly pressed suit that’s back from the dry cleaner, the slightly wrinkled suit that we wore a few days earlier, or the jeans and casual shirt that works on a casual Friday.

AC: We could take yesterday’s sweatpants, the ripped jeans that don’t smell too bad, or stay in the pajamas we wore to bed.

What should we do when we see people we know on the sidewalk?

BC: We slow our walk, smile, shake hands or

hug and ask how they are doing.

AC: We run across the street, yell in their general direction and wave as we make the same joke we made the day before about the need for social distancing.

How do we start emails?

BC: We might dive right in, ask an important question or ease into it, hoping all is well.

AC: We often start emails by hoping the person we’re writing to and their family are safe.

How should we check on our college-age children?

BC: We can call them or FaceTime to see how they are doing and listen attentively as they share the excitement about school.

AC: We can call or FaceTime them from behind their locked door in our house and ask them how they are doing.

What do we do about the polarizing president?

BC: If we love him, we can find others who admire him. If we hate him, we can blame him for climate change, relaxing regulations, and changing the tone of discourse in Washington.

AC: If we love him, we can thank our lucky stars that he’s leading us and the economy out

of this pandemic. If we hate him, we can blame him for our slow reaction and hold him to account for everything he and his administration haves said or didn’t say in connection with the COVIDcovid-19 response.

What do we do if someone sneezes?

BC: We offer a polite “God bless you” or, if we’re fans of “Seinfeld,” we say, “You are so good looking.”

AC: We drop anything we’re carrying and race across the room. When we’re a safe distance, we turn around scornfully, particularly if the person didn’t sneeze into anhis or her elbow.

What do we think is funny?

BC: We follow our own sense of humor, reserving the right to laugh only when we feel compelled.

AC: We look at a picture of Winnie-the- Pooh and Piglet. We see Winnie telling Piglet to “Back the f$#@$ off,” and we laugh and send it to everyone who won’t get in trouble for receiving an email in which someone curses, after we ask if they and their family are safe.

This is Coronavirus Reality this time as extended snow days? After all, remarkably we had no snow days this winter.

I confess that’s something of a disappointment for me. I enjoy snow days — if they happen to occur on days when no one is inconvenienced.

I accept them as a gift of time, like maybe one or two days to be homebound. That’s a chance to answer emails and cook a new recipe. But this coronavirus distancing is too much of a good thing; rather it’s a wicked thing. It’s scary because people are sickening and dying, and the governmental projections of casualties for the next two weeks are pouring oil on the fire.

There are two parts to our fear.

Health, of course, is the first. We should all do what we are urged to do: Stay indoors to the fullest extent possible, wash our hands, use hand sanitizer when we can’t, don’t assemble in groups of any sort, even neighbors or relatives beyond our nuclear families and stay occupied — with work or entertainment.

The second part is economic. We read or

worry about how they will make their mortgage, taxes, maintenance and insurance payments.

And on and on, it’s a game of economic dominoes.

There are federal loans available, ranging from a maximum of $25,000 as bridge loans for disaster-related purposes to $210 million for disaster loans. These are made possible through the U.S. Small Business Administration. The trouble with loans, of course, is that they have to be repaid and with interest. That is more than most small businesses would be able to do, especially those already hit by the retail downturn.

While this is all incredibly worrisome, it might help to project into the future. How will we live differently? How will we work differently?

Even, how will we shop for food differently? The world will change. Can we make it for the better?
