Nesconset Woman Found Deceased in Syosset

A few days after being reported missing, a 19-year-old was found dead.

Police said that Paige Relyea, who had been reported missing Jan. 20 after she was last seen leaving her home in a 2009 gray Toyota Corolla, was found dead in Syosset Jan. 23.

A family member called police about Relyea’s disapperance Jan. 20 at approximately 12:45 p.m. Relyea lived at 3 Premier Court and was last seen leaving her home Jan. 19 at around 12:30 p.m.

Nassau County Police Department detectives are currently investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 516-573-6200.

LI Health Officials Monitoring Coronavirus Threat

While the risk from the new deadly coronavirus that has closed cities in China remains low in New York, Long Island hospitals, including Stony Brook, are working with the New York Department of Health to prepare in case it makes its way to the New York area.

The respiratory virus, which originated at a seafood market in Wuhan Province in China during contact between humans and an animal that reportedly could have been a snake, has claimed the lives of 132 people as of Jan. 29. The virus has spread to three states, with single cases in Seattle, Washington, and Chicago, Illinois, and two cases in California.

The reported deaths from the virus are all in China, although people have also tested positive for coronavirus in countries including Australia, Canada, France, Japan and Vietnam, among others.

As of earlier this week, New York State had sent samples for nine people to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing.

“These five individuals remain in isolation as their samples are tested at CDC,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said in a statement. “While the risk for New Yorkers is currently low, we are still working to keep everyone informed, prepared and safe.”

China has been working to contain the virus by enforcing lockdowns in cities like Wuhan. Indeed, an unnamed Stony Brook scientist, who was visiting his family, has been unable to leave China to return to Long Island. Department and the university community in trying to bring him home.

When he returns to the United States, the professor will remain in quarantine until he could no longer be a carrier for the virus.

Area hospitals, meanwhile, are watching carefully for any signs of coronavirus.

“There are procedure plans in place in every hospital,” said Dr. Bettina Fries, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Stony Brook University’s Renaissance School of Medicine. “There is always a concern when these outbreaks are announced.”

At this point, however, the World Health Organization has not declared the outbreak an emergency. The CDC has classified the new coronavirus threat level as “low.”

The coronavirus, called 2019-nCoV, is in the same family as sudden acute respiratory syndrome and the Middle East respiratory syndrome. The initial mortality rate from the current coronavirus is lower than the 10 percent rate for SARS, which spread in 2002, or the 30 to 35 percent rate from MERS, which started in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Gaming for a Good Cause

Angela’s House received a $60,000 donation as a result of Fortnite gamer Tim “Bizzle” Miller’s successful participation and third-place win in the Community Charity Showdown run by Twitch Rivals late last year. The gamer visited Angela’s House children at its Stony Brook home Jan. 26 to celebrate the donation.

“I was so happy to be able to play in the Twitch Rivals Community Charity Showdown and win money for Angela’s House,” Miller said. “I know that this donation will directly help the children at Angela’s House. Being from Long Island, I wanted to play for a local charity and the work that is done to help medically fragile children at Angela’s House is amazing.”

The contribution from Miller will help benefit Angela’s House Everyday Wishes Program, which assists extraordinary children and families who have ordinary (everyday) but critical needs.

The Smithtown Central School District community came together for an annual dance/ kickline competition Jan. 25 to honor former Smithtown High School West Whisperette alumna Stephanie Belli, who lost her life in a car crash in 2015.

To keep her memory alive, a scholarship

fund has been set up in her honor. This year’s dance festival brought together more than 40 teams from the tristate area.

The winners of this year’s scholarships are Meghan Deery from Smithtown High School West and Jillian Catalano from Smithtown High School East.

Local Girl Scout Helps Injured Birds of Prey at Sweetbriar

Her mother, Deb, said she wasn’t surprised when her daughter chose to help out at Sweetbriar.

“She’s always liked to help animals,” the mother said. “She’s definitely a big animal person.

She’s also always liked to do community service.”

Her mother said with Girl Scout Troop 2867,

her daughter has helped Smithtown Animal Shelter by making dog toys and conducting supply drives for them. Outside of Girl Scouts, Van Cott has made memory wire bracelets and sold them at her father’s office and donated the money to SaveA-Pet Animal Shelter in Port Jeff Station.

Isabel Fernandes, a wildlife care coordinator at Sweetbriar, said Van Cott has done an amazing job repairing the prey bin, and Sweetbriar is always

appreciative for the help they get from Scouts.

“We are a small staff so it’s important that we have people who can help us and get projects and other things done here,” Fernandes said.

The coordinator explained that the pen is enclosed in the 80-foot flight conditioning enclosure aviary, which is used for wildlife rehabilitation to help injured birds fly again and exercise their muscles before they can be released. The center prey pen ensures the birds maintain their hunting skills.

Fernandes said there is currently a great horned owl in the aviary that was removed when Van Cott was working on the enclosure, as it’s important to keep human contact as limited as possible — something she has now learned through experience.

“The more interaction with humans they have, the more adjusted they will become,” the Girl Scout said. “They need to learn how to capture the prey themselves and how to survive on their own.”

As part of her Gold Award project, in addition to working with her family on the enclosure, she will talk to younger Girl Scouts about the project, Van Cott said, as well as educate them about the importance of animal rehabilitation and how birds of prey control the rodent population.

“Every animal has its part in the ecosystem,” she said. “I’ve always loved big birds. I’ve always loved seeing them out in the wild just looking up and seeing a hawk every now and then.”

Foundation with his brother Chris, said there is a need in Suffolk County for free transportation such as bicycles. One example is around East Patchogue and Manorville where there is a sort of “food desert,” he said, with few grocery stores and many in the area without cars. With a bike, a person can get to stores, doctors and jobs easier than if they were walking. He said there are successful bike co-ops around the country, including in upstate New York, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Connecticut.

Ferguson, who jokes that he is a slow bicyclist, said he joined the cycling club Suffolk Bicycle Riders Association where he found a thriving organization and members who were helpful in teaching him and other volunteers at the new co-op.

“I was surprised at how willing people were to come out and teach us how to fix bikes — donate parts and bikes,” he said. “It’s been a very positive experience.”

The founder said the co-op has been working with Ward Melville High School’s DECA Club, which is planning a bike drive and is helping with the nonprofit’s social media. He said he has also been in touch with representatives from Stony Brook University

to collect bikes that are left behind by students after the semester ends. The nonprofit also plans to work in some way with Brookhaven in the future.

Ward Melville DECA faculty adviser Ilene Littman said the club heard about the co-op from one of its board members Jim Komosinski. After a site visit to the workshop, she reported back to the DECA members and helped form two teamsw of interested students.

“I personally feel that the students connected with this mission because they all have bikes and want to help others who are less fortunate and do not have the means or resources to buy a bike of their own,” Littman said. “By doing so, they are not only providing transportation, they are enabling a fun and healthy activity for those in need.”

Recently the co-op began offering free bicycle repair classes and a course on how to ride properly in groups. Volunteer Richard Dittmar, a bike mechanic and former bike shop owner, leads the classes.

Dittmar said he found out about the co-op through SBRA’s newsletter and started sharing his expertise to pay it forward.

“I thought it would be a great thing for me to pass on,” he said.

Dittmar said the level of difficulty when it comes to repairing bikes ranges from easily fixing a flat tire to more complex jobs like problems with the gears.

The bike mechanic said he looks forward to volunteering with the co-op and said future partnerships with junk removal companies will be a big help.

“There’s probably bicycles in every garage they walk into when they’re hauling a family’s junk away,” he said. “They don’t know what to do with the bikes, so at least there’s an outlet for that now.”

Volunteer and board member Lori Neiste said the co-op is also an example of being environmentally friendly as old bicycles will be refurbished and used again instead of being thrown in the trash.

Ferguson said while the original plan was to distribute bicycles at food pantries, they have had social workers reach out to them for clients.

Bicycles in all conditions are accepted, Ferguson said, even rusty bikes as parts can be used. Those interested in donating can drop off bikes at the co-op at 8 Flowerfield, Unit 18, in St. James, or have volunteers pick them up by calling 631-371-3886.

Hailey Van Cott, a junior at Ward Melville High School and a Girl Scout since kindergarten, recently began repairing the prey pen within the flight aviary at Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown as part of her Gold Award project. A visitor to the center for years, she knew the location was the right choice.

“I really love what Sweetbriar stands for and I knew I wanted to help them out for my Gold Award,” she said.

To help with her project, PSEG Long Island awarded the Girl Scout $200. She said she plans to use the money to put down Astroturf around the sides of the prey enclosure, which helps the birds grip as it’s a softer texture than a piece of wood and in turn prevents foot problems.

PSEG representatives said the project is in line with their goal to relocate osprey and other raptor nests from electrical facilities to safe nesting locations.

“We want to help ensure these wonderful birds continue to return to the area year after year while, at the same time, protecting the reliability of the energy grid,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president

St. James Nonprofit Finds a Simple Way to Help Others

A local nonprofit has blossomed in Flowerfield with the mission to provide bicycles for those in need.

The all-volunteer Brookhaven Bike Co-Op opened at Flowerfield in St. James this past fall. The co-op provides a space for unwanted bikes to be refurbished and then given to those in need. The co-op also provides the public access to tools and spare parts to fix their own bikes and provides a community space for gatherings and meetings both bike and nonbike related, according to founder Greg Ferguson.

“It’s a place to sort of create a little bicycling community,” Ferguson said.

The original plan for the co-op was to enter into a public-private partnership with the Town of Brookhaven, hence the name, according to the Setauket resident. However, when the space the town allocated for the 501(c) didn’t work out, it was decided to open in the current location. It’s a spot Ferguson said is perfect for the co-op, with other surrounding nonprofits located nearby.

The timing of the virus is challenging because the symptoms are similar to those for the flu, which has become more prevalent in New York and around the country this winter. Coronavirus symptoms, according to the CDC, include coughing, fever and shortness of breath.

While airports like John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens are screening people who arrive from Wuhan, efforts to determine whether they may be carrying the virus could be limited, in part because the incubation period could be as long as two weeks, during which time an infected person could be contagious.

Infectious disease experts suggested practicing the kind of hygiene that would reduce the likelihood of contracting the flu. This includes: washing hands for at least 20 seconds, using hand sanitizer and maintaining a distance of about 3 feet from anyone who has the sniffles or appears to be battling a cold. they should be extra careful,” Fries said, adding that the CDC, which has been regularly updating its web page, www.cdc.gov, has been working tirelessly with national and state health officials to coordinate a response to this virus, wherever it hits.

“The New York State Department of Health and the CDC need to be praised for all the work” they are doing, she said. “They have a task force that doesn’t do anything else but prepare for patients coming from outbreak areas.”

Scientists around the world have also been working to develop a vaccine for this new virus.

According to a recent report in The Washington Post, researchers anticipate developing such a vaccine in as little as three months, which is considerably shorter than the 20 months it took to develop a vaccine for the SARS virus. The Post, however, suggested that the development of a vaccine would require testing before it received approval.

Fries said the concern about the coronavirus comes less with the current death toll than it does with the effect as it continues to spread.

“It’s important to see how far it spreads and what the real mortality is,” which is tough to track because the outbreak is still at the beginning and scientists and public health officials are still processing new information, she added.

On. Jan. 28, Suffolk County police arrested the parents of a 3-year-old boy who was reported missing after they allegedly failed to surrender him to the custody of Child Protective Services earlier this month.

Selina Elswick, 32, and Thomas Sollas, 43, both of Huntington Station, were both charged with endangering the welfare of a child and custodial interference second degree.

Elswick was additionally held on a warrant from Suffolk County Family Court and was held overnight at the 4th Precinct. Sollas was

held overnight at the 5th Precinct, and both were arraigned at 1st District Court in Central Islip Jan. 29.

Elswick was scheduled to return her son to Suffolk County Family Court in Central Islip Jan. 22 and failed to appear. When representatives from CPS attempted to take custody of the child at the family’s residence in Commack Jan. 22, it was discovered that the two had moved out of the residence Jan. 16. CPS then contacted the Suffolk County Police Department to report the child missing.

It was the final meet before the County Championship Feb. 1. Senior Luke Neilson placed first at 3,200m, setting a new school record for Kings Park clocking in at 9 minutes, 56.43 seconds, 14 seconds clear of second place.

Richard Mangogna, also a Kings Park senior, ran the shorter events where he

captured the indoor pole vault record clearing 13 feet Dec. 14 at the Armory Track & Field facility in Manhattan. Mangogna is the No. 3 pole vaulter in Suffolk County and has qualified for the State Pole Vault Qualifier Championships at Mount Sinai High School Feb. 6.

Letters to the Editor Editorial Deny Fear, Think Practically An Open Letter to Smithtown’s Planning Board

“Fear is the mind killer.”

It’s a recurring phrase found in the seminal writing of Frank Herbert’s 1965 book “Dune.” Despite the complicated jumbling of sci-fi jargon and galactic themes of power, religion and politics, the one phrase sticks out, touching on a basic fact of human existence, and the ever-present element of terror in the hearts of humanity.

We experience that same overriding fear again and again, such as now when reading about the current outbreak of the coronavirus from China. There have already been five people announced to have caught the virus in the U.S. That is out of 110 people who are currently being investigated for having the virus, where over 30 have come back negative. New York City has yet to have seen a particular person come forward with the virus, but city hospitals are making preparations knowing it’s only a matter of time, according to The New York Times.

Long Island is in much the same way making such preparations, with Stony Brook University Hospital and other Long Island health centers putting plans into effect.

This isn’t some kind of new, alien virus. The coronavirus has been around for many years, and causes respiratory illnesses in animals, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This new strain of the virus is being called the 2019 novel coronavirus. Deaths, experts say, have mostly been the elderly or those with underlying health conditions.

There’s something primordially horrifying of the prospect of disease, and despite our modern sensibilities we still have not eclipsed that fear. There was swine flu during 2008 and 2009. There was Ebola in 2018.

However, the coronavirus is not something to simply tune out. The death toll has now exceeded 132 persons, all of them in China, and there have been a reported approximately 4,500 cases confirmed, with some scientists saying the number of infections could be higher.

That is not to say these diseases do not kill people, nor that they did not have to be met by concerted efforts of government and civilian medical professionals. But panicked reactions to such outbreaks rarely help.

Factcheck.org posted its own data points of misinformation spread about the virus, with some on social media inaccurately saying there are 10s or 100s of thousands dead, when that’s simply not true or at all confirmed.

The U.S. has already strongly suggested canceling any nonessential visits to China. Transport within the epicenter for the virus is already heavily restricted by Chinese officials.

The CDC has said the virus can travel from person to person, so the agency has suggested that if one must travel, then they should avoid contact with obviously sick people, as well as with animals, both alive or dead, and animal markets. A person traveling should also wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or with hand sanitizer if no soap is available.

Of course, we at TBR News Media will try to keep abreast of any new developments of the disease from the local angle and put any such updates on our website, but we also ask you don’t let the fear kill you, body and mind.

The Environmental Impact Statement submitted by Gyrodyne presents major problems regarding future traffic that I believe are insurmountable if the proposed application is approved. My office is located on Lake Avenue and I live in Head of the Harbor, just north of the Gyrodyne property. Anyone who travels regularly in that area along Route 25A knows that traffic currently is heavy and at times seriously congested. The proposed development of this property will cause what are daily frustrating traffic conditions to become intolerable.

The roads were not made to handle the current volume, let alone the projected volume, and I believe the applicant’s count of projected daily vehicle trips is significantly underestimated.

I was at the last public hearing. Those in the audience who spoke in favor of the application focused solely on one issue — that approval will mean use by the future St. James business district of the proposed sewage treatment plant. Such a narrow view is irresponsible, even if such a benefit is realized. Those few speakers

said nothing about the other major concerns of traffic and environmental issues, not to mention aesthetic and historical concerns.

As an attorney and business owner on Lake Avenue for over 30 years, and past president of the St. James Chamber of Commerce and [member of] other area organizations, I recognize and appreciate the need for sewers in downtown St. James. In fact, at a public hearing with town board members two years ago, after the coming Lake Avenue revitalization project was announced, I stated that it would be “a darned shame” if a few years after Lake Avenue was completely renovated, the road bed was torn up again to install a dry sewer main. Although I was told there was no money to install the main, six months later it was announced that it would be part of the project.

Make no mistake: I am an advocate for the business owners in St. James. One way or another, there will be a working sewer line on Lake Avenue. But I am also a resident who cares deeply about this community and its citizens, history

and environment. To approve this project because the sewer line is needed is narrowminded and unfairly ignores the looming gigantic traffic problem that will impose an unreasonable burden on the residents of the northeastern part of this town and those traveling through it. The magnitude of the proposed project will have regional consequences that, with all due respect, have not yet been appreciated.

No one should begrudge the right of a property owner to legally develop its property. However, that right must be reconciled with the greater public good.

When an imbalance might occur, as is likely in this matter, it is the job of government to be sure that an injustice does not result.

Approval of the proposed project would be a major mistake that I predict we would all come to regret. I urge you and the Town Board to work with Brookhaven and the county and state governments, and even private interested parties, to find a way to resolve this matter so that we can all live with it.

Zeldin’s Take on Anti-Semitism Is False I am writing in response to U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin’s [R-NY1] letter [“Condemn anti-Semitism,” Jan. 9]. As a Jewish woman, I am no stranger to this type of bigotry. I, too, am fearful of the rise in anti-Semitic hate crimes. However, I have reached different conclusions and ideas as to what the appropriate responses and best practices are for combating antiSemitism than Zeldin has.

While the congressman and I agree on the need for education to combat antiSemitism, his conclusion that greater security is needed is an area I disagree with. Most houses of worship already have excellent security systems in place.

What we do not need is our synagogues having armed security. This cannot and must not be an excuse to introduce more weapons into our community. We have already established working relationships with law enforcement in light of these threats, particularly after the Tree of Life shooting of 2018 in Pittsburgh.

Zeldin has accused elected leaders of not stepping up and speaking out against anti-Semitism. I find this statement incredibly disingenuous on his part. On Jan. 12, there was a Long Island march against

anti-Semitism. Elected officials from the local, county, state and federal levels were in attendance and spoke at the march.

Thousands of Long Islanders of all faiths attended. It was a moment of solidarity in our community — and Zeldin was missing.

In fact, he was the only member of the Long Island congressional delegation to be absent from this event. That absence did not go unnoticed by the Jewish community. So, his call for greater outspokenness from his colleagues rings hollow when he chooses to miss an event of this magnitude.

It is also disgraceful that Zeldin is using anti-Semitism as an excuse to attack the bail reform law. The truth is that bail reform is about income inequality. Wealth or lack thereof should not be determining factors in release from prison. It should be risk and public safety which determine that decision. Conflating the two as Zeldin does is misleading fearmongering, and not befitting of an elected official.

What Zeldin continues to not comprehend is that anti-Semitism is but one spoke in the wheel of bigotry.

It stands alongside Islamophobia, xenophobia, homophobia and racism.

Zeldin talks about eradicating anti-

Semitism, but he continuously abides and engages in other forms of hate speech in his rhetoric on social media and cable news. He has chosen to fundraise with white supremacists, including Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka. He has chosen to defend white nationalist Stephen Miller. And Zeldin was one of the 23 House Republicans who voted against H.Res.183, which not only strongly condemned anti-Semitism but condemned hate in all forms. In light of these actions, Zeldin’s letter does not match his rhetoric and voting record.

As Jews, we are all too familiar with the pain and fear associated with antiSemitism. It is why, as a Jewish woman, I stand for and with all other victims of hate. It is why I will continue to stand up and hold my elected leaders accountable for their words and deeds, especially those like Zeldin who weaponize antiSemitism for political purposes. Because as a student of history, I know that an attack on one of us is in fact an attack on all of us.

Top 10 Republican Solutions to the Bolton Problem

W

hat should the Republicans do about former National Security Adviser John Bolton? In this topsy-turvy battle in Washington, Bolton has become a lightning bolt with his claims about his recent boss, President Donald Trump (R).

So, the Republicans, particularly under Trump, have a playbook for dealing with disaffected former D. None staffers. That’s not terribly surprisof the above ing, given that the

BY DANIEL DUNAIEF president’s previous job involved letting people know that, “You’re fired!” Here are my top 10 options for dealing with Bolton.

10. Pretend no one knew him and that he

wasn’t significant. The president has used that approach with other people with varying levels of success. The problem is that there were far too many pictures and meetings. For crying out loud, the guy was the national security adviser.

Disavowing any knowledge or contact with him strains the willing suspension of disbelief required for so many other excuses. Let’s pass on that one.

9. Claim he’s trying to make money on a book. That’s what some have suggested, ignoring that he might be trying to make money and be telling the truth.

8. Insist that the book is a national security threat. That’s a technique the president has said he’d use to keep everyone else from testifying during his hotly contested impeachment trial.

7. Suggest that Trump would “love” to have him testify, but that someone else — a lawyer, a member of the FBI or CIA, or someone in the shadows who the president and his staff feel has a valid argument — has suggested that his testifying would destroy the Constitution, ruin the presidency or alter the course of history in

a negative way for everyone.

6. Create a new, outlandish and riveting conspiracy theory. Maybe he’s still John Bolton, but the Democrats, and in particular House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, got a hold of him and somehow figured out how to reprogram him. This is doubly delicious, like a cheeseburger with extra bacon, deep fried in lard, because it unites Bolton with Pelosi and suggests that he’s lying and has sold his soul to a lower form of political being.

5. Develop a diversion. (Don’t you love alliteration?) Come up with a Mideast peace plan, a Chinese trade policy, a cure for coronavirus or a way to provide energy that removes the hippy-dippy greenhouse gases and cools the Earth. The short attention spans will seize on this as the one and only part of the news that’s worth covering. Surely, with all the events of the world, the drama, the excitement and the immediate need to feed the news beast, there must be some way to send eyeballs elsewhere, turning Bolton into an afterthought.

4. Ban anyone with a bushy, white mustache from entering the Senate chamber. The Democrats and all their supporters picked on Bolton mercilessly when he became national security adviser, focusing on his facial hair.

Surely it’s fair to suggest that this defining characteristic makes him untrustworthy?

3. Give him the wrong time and day to show up. When he doesn’t arrive, suggest that he must have had a change of heart and it’s time to move on with a process that has a predetermined ending anyway.

2. Someone to whom Bolton lied could claim that the former national security adviser didn’t always tell the truth, which would undermine anything Bolton claimed the president said.

1. Let him testify. Bolton was always part of a Republican plan anyway. Once Republicans allow him to come before the Senate, he can deny the “leaks,” undermining the credibility of the media and the Democrats. In return, he can get another position, like maybe an ambassadorship?

Most of the entries were mailed in via the U.S. Postal Service, what we have come to call “snail mail.”

We didn’t know what to expect.

To our delight, we received 2,525 nominations over the course of the weeks the contest ran. After we tabulated the responses from Huntington, Greenlawn and Northport, Smithtown, Kings Park, St. James and Lake Grove, Port Jefferson and Port Jefferson Station, Sound Beach, Rocky Point and Miller Place, Yaphank and Centereach, Stony Brook and Setauket and more, we were delighted to publish the winners in a special supplement at the close of the year.

Now we are celebrating those “No. 1’s” at the aforementioned reception next Wednesday evening. In addition to the individual businesses and services, we are celebrating much more.
