Lee Zeldin to join Trump’s Impeachment Defense Team

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY1) was named to President Donald Trump’s (R) legal defense team regarding the Senate’s impeachment trial, which began Jan. 21.

Seven other members of the U.S. House of Representatives have been named to the team as well. Zeldin has been a big proponent of the president and has decried the impeachment trial constantly on cable news shows and on Twitter. The other members of the team have also been outspoken allies of Trump, including fellow Rep. Elise Stefanik, whose district includes a large part of upstate New York.

“The President NEVER should have been impeached in the first place!” Zeldin wrote on Twitter, also congratulating his fellow congress members on being assigned to the legal team.

The White House statement announcing Zeldin’s position said that such officials have already provided guidance to the White House team and derided the impeachment proceedings in the house, saying it was “concocted” by Democrats.

People planning to run against Zeldin were quick to condemn him for accepting the position. In a release, Nancy Goroff, a Stony Brook Democrat planning to run for the 1st congressional seat, said the congressman “has his priorities upside down and backwards, caring more about lying for President Trump than standing up for his constituents.”

Mercer Project Sends Community Scrambling

Since the Dec. 12 planning board meeting in Head of the Harbor, when Robert Mercer’s site plan application for a 8,633-square-foot tool shed was considered, a string of people have quit village government.

Richard Warren of Inter-Science Research Association, an environmental consultant hired by the village to review the plan, resigned unexpectedly. During the Dec. 12 hearing, he concluded that the Mercer application was incomplete.

Village attorney, Anthony Tohill, also resigned Jan. 15.

Meanwhile, Christopher Modelewski, Mercer’s attorney for the project, has requested that the upcoming public hearing, schedule for Jan. 28 be postponed.

“No, we haven’t heard back from village officials,” the attorney said in a phone call.

Harlan Fisher, chair of the village planning board, was traveling and could not be reached for comment. An employee from village hall confirmed that they had received a letter from Modelewski requesting a postponement. The employee disclosed that at this point they have not been told to cancel the hearing as Fisher is currently away. They

declined to speak on the two resignations.

Meanwhile, Anthony Coates, who is leading a coalition of neighbors opposed to the project, has requested from the Attorney General’s office a review of the project’s proceedings, which Coates said violates laws governing procedures.

“At a public hearing in December, it became clear that Village residents overwhelmingly

oppose this plan to commercialize and forever alter the rural Harbor Road corridor,” he said in a letter. “What was not clear at the time is that Village government had apparently known about the project for months before Village residents were informed, and has engaged in a non-transparent, secretive and potentially unlawful process, engineered by people inside Village government, to approve

the project before residents had any idea what was going on.”

Coates said the group’s concerns center around a meeting of the Village Planning Board on Sept. 10. Meeting minutes, he said, show that the board voted to accept a partial abandonment of subdivision, a required first step toward approval of the project. The coalition argues that the action, taken without notice to village residents, was an illegal segmentation of the environmental review for the project under state law.

“Neither the chairman of the planning board, nor any members of the public, attended the meeting,” Coates said.

“Members of the planning board who did attend the meeting were provided no notice that the Mercer matter would be discussed.

Planning board members who asked questions about the project were advised that the questions were not relevant. This was for all intents and purposes a ‘secret meeting’ of the planning board under New York State open meetings law and held exclusively for the benefit of the applicant.”

The coalition also sent a letter to Attorney General Letitia James (D), citing potential violations of the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), the State’s Open Meetings Law, as well as the Public Officers Law and requested a review by her office.

Gyrodyne Project Needs More Community Input

As a Smithtown native who mobilized my neighbors to study the Gyrodyne project and speak at the hearing, and having spoken myself, I am gratified at what was predominantly an open-minded reception.

Clearly many residents had not been informed of the grossly negative impact that project might have, and why they should insist the Smithtown Planning Board ask more questions before rubber-stamping the proposal.

Based on research by dozens of concerned residents, including nationally known environmental advocates like Carl Safina, we testified to evident prior use of lead arsenate, methyl bromides and excessive nitrates at Flowerfield — a fact not mentioned in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). We documented how the Planning Board excluded data

concerning traffic, provided evidence of potential harm to Stony Brook Harbor and surrounding waterways, and — disturbingly — rebuffed regional officials like Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) who sought to provide information about shared infrastructure and planned regional development.

We also presented economic evidence that many jobs potentially created by the development will produce low-paying, minimum-wage positions — and that the property might actually be removed from the tax base, causing it to shrink rather than grow.

Lastly, we shared our concern that the development will trigger more high-density use along historic 25A, creating more suburban sprawl.

As a descendant of Richard “Bull” Smith, I envision a shared North Shore future that

State, County, Area Hospitals Bracing for Another Tough Flu Season

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM State, county and area hospitals are bracing for this year’s flu season following reports of a sharp increase in recent weeks in the number of flu cases in New York state.

About 11,000 confirmed cases of influenza were reported by the New York State Department of Health for the week ending Jan. 11. That’s an increase of 10 percent over the previous week, according to the New York State Flu Tracker. There were 641 new cases in Suffolk County. The statewide total this season stands at almost 44,000.

Similarly, “widespread”’ flu activity was reported by health departments in 46 states as of the last week of December, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital’s Dr. Sharon Nachman, division chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and professor of Pediatrics, said currently the hospital is in the midst of handling an influx of influenza cases.

“We are dealing with the children’s hospital being quite full,” she said. “We have a number of infants with the flu, and we are

concerned about it.”

The hospital hopes to see an improvement in the next couple of weeks.

Nachman points to a number of reasons why we have been seeing more flu cases in the state: People unwilling to get vaccinated; individuals believing that they are safe from getting sick if they haven’t in the past; a belief that cold and flu medications are better than the shot, among other things.

“I ask patients, ‘Is there a legitimate reason why you don’t want to be vaccinated?’”

Nachman said. “You have to think of who is also living in your household, like young people and the elderly. Community protection is everyone’s job.”

The division chief said if everyone got their flu vaccine there would be less people to treat.

“You are 100 percent at risk without the vaccine,” Nachman said. “The vaccine will not prevent someone from getting the flu, but it can lessen the severity of it and shorten its duration.”

She said despite some misconceptions, you can’t catch the flu from the vaccine as it does not contain a live virus. If you happen to get sick after getting a flu shot, it’s a coincidence as there are a lot of viruses and illnesses

circulating during the winter months.

In an effort to curb flu cases in Suffolk County, officials announced recently that the county would be offering free influenza immunization to residents 6 months of age

and older who are uninsured or whose health insurance does not cover flu immunization.

“The health and wellness of our residents is of utmost importance,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) in a statement.

“The flu has been on the rise, and we want residents to know it is not too late to protect yourself and your loved ones from what can turn into a debilitating disease by getting immunized as soon as possible.”

The county’s health department has been providing flu immunizations at a number of locations including Suffolk County Department of Health Services at Great River in the Town of Islip and at Riverhead Free Library.

Nachman said it is important to constantly wash your hands and if you are sick, stay home to avoid exposing others to the illness.

Flu shots are also available at local pharmacies, pediatrician and health care provider offices, as well at county-affiliated health centers.

People who are having difficulty finding flu shots or community groups serving those who are in need of flu shots are advised to contact the county Department of Health Services Bureau of Communicable Disease Control at 631-854-0333.

Bernstein No Longer in the Running for SBU President

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Stony Brook University Interim President Michael Bernstein has officially withdrawn his name for consideration in the search for the next SBU president.

Bernstein made the difficult decision “after considerable reflection,” according to an email statement from SBU. “As he considered his future career options, he felt he needed the freedom to pursue external professional opportunities, without the complication of being an internal candidate at Stony Brook,” the statement read. “Michael has stated that he has been enormously impressed with, and inspired by the excellence of the faculty, staff, and students throughout Stony Brook’s campuses. It is his and the cabinet’s expectation that we will continue to work together as a team over the course of this next semester to move forward on all of our key goals.”

The interim president took over the reins at the university after former SBU President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. exited the position Aug. 1, 2019. In May of 2019, it was announced that Stanley would take on the role of president at

Michigan State University in August that year.

In June of 2019, the State University of New York board of trustees approved Bernstein as interim president. Previously, Bernstein had served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs as well as professor of business, economics and history at SBU since 2016.

During an exclusive interview with TBR News Media in August, Bernstein said he had been originally planning to step down as provost and move to San Diego. When Stanley announced he was leaving, he was asked if he would consider the interim role. During the interview, when questioned if he would consider staying permanently, Bernstein said he had an open mind.

“Let’s see if I like the job and more importantly let’s see if the job likes me and we’ll go from there,” Bernstein said at the time.

The news came as a surprise to members of the Three Village Civic Association, who are aiming to create a stronger relationship with the university, and TVCA 1st Vice President George Hoffman said the group was disappointed.

“Michael Bernstein was an affable and outgoing person,” he said. “The first thing he did when appointed interim president was to

reach out to all of the community organizations and invite us for breakfast to discuss how we can improve the relationship between the university and the community.”

Hoffman said the civic association “had great hopes for future relationships under Bernstein.” It was something they felt they didn’t have with the previous administration.

“It is our hope that the search committee will select a candidate that has the same

understanding of the importance of community partnership as Michael Bernstein,” he said.

In September, SUNY announced a search committee that includes faculty, staff, Stony Brook Foundation members, students, administration, alumni and Stony Brook Council members. To aid the search, the committee set up the email address PresidentialSearch@ stonybrook.edu for comments and suggestions to be submitted.

Lessons in the Laws of Magnetics Third-graders in Jenelle Velez and Kelly Paplin’s class at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District conducted a hands-on experiment in the laws of magnetism during a Project Lead the Way lesson Jan. 16. After learning about the

causes and effects of magnets, the different poles and their push-and-pull properties, students had to hypothesize whether or not a number of different objects would stick to the magnets. Using clothespins, metal washers, corks and paper clips, students tested their theories of magnetic attraction and logged their results.

Escape Room Challenge Teaches Social-Emotional Skills

As part of the Smithtown Central School District’s ongoing social-emotional learning initiatives, seventh-grade students in Marissa LoSardo’s class at Nesaquake Middle School participated in an SEL-based escape room challenge Jan. 16.

The escape room challenge was run by Beth Bolger, a physical education teacher at the Sayville school district. Bolger, who was named New York State Teacher of the Year twice, developed a two-hour SEL escape room challenge that she condensed into a class period for the Nesaquake students.

The seven different stations set up around the gym were designed to teach students different coping skills, positive reinforcement and a way to deal with their emotions. In the All Tangled Up station, students were woven together and had to work cooperatively to get untangled. Shades of Emotion taught students how to knock out negative thoughts and reinforced filling their brains with positivity.

The goals were to teach the students collaboration, to help them recognize and understand the different types of emotions they experience and how they manifest in their behaviors and moods, and to give them strategies to cope and handle those emotions.

Hands-on Lessons Get Complex at Dogwood

Third-graders in Deborah Verre’s class at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District are learning about complex machines during

their recent Project Lead the Way lessons.

The students began the unit by building simple machines using their Vex kits and have progressed to scissors, axes and shovels.

During this lesson, the students went a step further in their building, designing cranes, catapults and wheelbarrows.

Giving Books a Taste at Tackan Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District transformed its library into a French bistro for its fifth-grade students Jan. 10, 13 and 14 for book-tasting events. With red-andwhite checkered tablecloths and a menu that included three courses of different books to “taste,” the students enjoyed some

different genres of books by “sampling” their descriptions. The fifth-graders got started on their appetizer, a book that had been preselected for them to taste. After reading the back cover, inside jacket or just a random page of the book, the students recorded the title, genre and author and decided if it was a book they would like to read. They moved on to the dinner and dessert choices and sampled different books during the respective courses.

• Commercial GPS requirements: This bill, S.6187C, sponsored by Gaughran, requires stretch limousines to use commercial GPS devices to assist them in using roads that are best suited for their vehicles.

• Increased penalties for illegal U-turns: This bill, S.6188, sponsored by Gaughran, expands the U-turn ban to stretch limousines capable of carrying nine or more passengers including the driver, and increases the financial and criminal penalties for drivers making illegal U-turns.

• Creation of passenger task force: This bill, S.6189C, sponsored by state Sen. Anna Kaplan (D-Great Neck), creates a passenger safety task force to study and make recommendations on additional safety measures for stretch limousines such as anti-intrusion bars, rollover protection,

emergency exits, and improved coordination between the DOT and DMV. • Seat belt requirements: This bill, S.6191C, sponsored by state Sen. Tim Kennedy (D-Buffalo), requires stretch limousines to be equipped with seat belts for every passenger for which the vehicle is rated. This includes a requirement for stretch limousines to be retrofitted with seat belts no later than Jan. 1, 2023, and for any stretch limousine modified on or after Jan. 1, 2021, to be equipped with seat belts.

• Commercial driving license requirement: This bill, S.6192A, sponsored by Kennedy, requires limousine drivers operating vehicles capable of transporting nine or more passengers to have a passenger-endorsed commercial driver’s license.

• Immobilization of defective limos: This bill, S.6193C, sponsored by Kennedy, authorizes DOT to immobilize or impound a stretch limo with an out-of-service defect.

• Website requirements: This bill, S.6604B, sponsored by state Sen. James Sanders Jr. (D-Far Rockaway), requires DMV to update its website regarding motor carrier safety information, and requires annual verifications on stretch limousine driver files with respect to disqualifying offenses, out of service defects and crashes.

• Extra seat belt requirements: This bill, S.7134, sponsored by state Sen. Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan), expands seat belt requirements in for-hire vehicles.

On Jan. 14, state political leaders reached agreement to adopt new limousine safety laws following deadly crashes in 2015 and 2018, officials said. The bills were created together and based on testimony from families of victims involved in the tragic crashes. This package of limo regulations better protects passengers, ensures higher standards for professional drivers, improves passenger communication options and increases penalties for bad actors who put public lives at risk. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said he will sign the bills into law.

“These bills, including mandatory seat belts and cracking down on illegal U-turns, are critical safety measures that will prevent tragic crashes like the one just a few years ago in Cutchogue, from happening again,” said state Sen. Jim Gaughran (D-Northport) who sponsored bills.

“I thank the brave and tireless advocacy of the families of the Cutchogue and Schoharie crashes for being the driving force behind today’s bills and fighting for safety.”

The additional limo regulation reforms passed by the New York State Senate include: • Customer service resources: This bill, S.6185B, sponsored by state Sen. Rachel May (D-Syracuse), requires maintenance of a hotline and website for New Yorkers to report safety issues with stretch limos, and requires the information to be conspicuously posted in vehicles for passengers.

• Drug and alcohol testing: This bill, S.6186B, sponsored by state Sen. Jen Metzger (D-Rosendale), requires preemployment and random drug and alcohol testing in large forhire vehicles.

Senior guard Katie Biglianni led Smithtown East in scoring with 8 points, her younger sister Carly, a sophomore, netted 6, as did freshman Ava Mueller. Paige Doherty, Briana Durland

and Becky Hannwacker all scored.

East Islip remains undefeated in league play at 7-0 while the loss drops the Bulls to 1-6 with five games remaining. Smithtown East retook the court with a road game against Bellport Jan. 22 (results unavailable at press time).

Fill Empty Retail Spaces Conflicts of Interest in Campaign Contributions As journalists, we share the frustrations of many residents in our communities who see the large number of empty storefronts — many left vacant for several years — while new developments seem to erupt out of the ground just a few feet away from derelict properties.

Imagine the grief felt by Huntington residents two years ago when Great Neck-based developer Villadom Corp. proposed construction of a 486,380-square-foot mall with retail and office space on the 50-acre property known as Elwood Orchard. Many residents feared overwhelming congestion on Route 25 and water quality issues. Meanwhile, empty buildings stood just to the east and west of the site.

Imagine the relief when the developer withdrew the application.

Then think of the relief that Hauppauge residents felt last year when they saw a sign reading Relish restaurant, of Kings Park, was opening an additional location in the old Pizza Hut on Route 111. The blighted building had been vacant for decades.

Rows of vacant buildings spoil Port Jeff’s uptown vibe. The abandoned businesses along Lake Avenue in St. James and Main Street in Smithtown also point to serious problems. In Setauket, a former King Kullen still sits empty years after the chain closed those doors, and a decrepit building sits on the corner of Gnarled Hollow Road. Suffolk County was willing to buy the latter property with the Town of Brookhaven looking to maintain it as passive parkland. Some of these situations are examples of property owners holding out for more money. In which case, the only real victim is the community as a whole.

Elected officials need to ensure that these empty storefronts are filled to create vibrant shopping areas. It’s an important, even essential step to take to create stronger, cleaner and healthier communities. It also protects groundwater and can minimize roadway congestion.

Preserve that open space and fill the locations that are already set up for commerce first.

Local officials may be limited in how much they can dictate to developers but there are options. Take for example Decatur, Illinois, where the city recently hired a retail consultant to fill the vacant storefronts. Consultants or even town employees can be tasked in recruiting companies interested in entering the market.

Businesses can be sold on the benefits of reconfiguration and renovation, rather than new construction.

Business owners can take responsibility, too, to maintain the quality of life in their neighborhoods where they do business.

Recently, former Yankees star baseball player Mariano Rivera received an OK on a zoning change from the Town of Brookhaven to create a car dealership in Port Jefferson Station in an already developed space. While he plans to create one new additional building on site, he will expand on an existing one. The local civic and town board complimented him on his willingness to work with the local community.

Many big businesses may come into an area focused on their branding, concerned with how their building needs to look, and insist on building from scratch in what they feel is an ideal location. We encourage elected officials to welcome businesses into structures that already exist. Quality of life should be considered first and foremost in our communities.

A new cleaning company in Town Hall?

It gave Ed a grand. Big project proposed

by Gyrodyne awaiting approval? It gave Ed a grand. You’re a developer looking for IDA tax breaks that will save you big bucks? Give Ed a grand. Consultants, contractors, lawyers and so on. You got business before the Town Board? Need an approval? Give Ed a grand.

Wehrheim may be a nice guy, but you know what? When you take oodles of campaign cash from people looking for business and seeking approvals from Town

Hall, you make Town Hall look for sale.

Holy Moly! Check the supervisor’s campaign disclosure forms [on the New York State Board of Elections website].

They read like a who’s who of who’s looking for an approval from Smithtown.

I don’t know about you, but I’m frugal — my kids say cheap. I’m getting nervous watching Town Hall spend like Zsa Zsa Gabor snowed in at Tiffany’s.

Are we hiring so many consultants and lawyers and contractors because they gave Ed a grand?

IDA tax breaks? If all these developers get all these tax breaks to build projects they were going to build anyway, guess who makes up the difference in taxes?

We do, of course. So, why are we granting so many tax breaks to so many

people who, remarkably enough, happen to be campaign contributors? Is it because they gave Ed a grand? I hope not, but I’ve got to say it does seem a bit fishy to me.

I don’t want to feel that way, and I shouldn’t have to, because our elected officials should avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. Public office is a public trust. A town supervisor shouldn’t be financially beholden to the very people he supervises. A public official shouldn’t take money from people with business before the town.

Cheap ole me? The sweater was from my daughter, so no conflict there. I’m going to keep it. But, Mr. Supervisor, you should do the right thing — give that money back. You’ll feel better.

Demand All the Impeachment Facts My name is Peter Cartwright. I live on Eaton’s Neck, and I help edit our community newsletter, Changing Tides.

I am raising three children, two of whom attend Northport public schools. I have been a registered voter for all my adult life and never in all that time have I ever seen a more divisive president who has rallied

his masses with lies and deceit. Now that he has been impeached it is vitally important to hear all the evidence that has since been mounting during just the past week. We demand to hear from everybody who has any additional information relevant to this impeachment, otherwise these proceedings will reflect only the Republican majority’s

foregone partisan conclusion.

If the American people are given all the facts it would be hard for our congressional leaders to refute what should obvious to any unbiased, intelligent voter.

In a letter to this newspaper [“Condemn anti-Semitism,” Jan. 16], our congressman, Lee Zeldin [R-NY1], forcefully condemned the anti-Semitic attacks that occurred recently in the New York metropolitan area. I share this condemnation. Until last year, for over 50 years the doors of my synagogue were unlocked during Shabbos services. Not anymore.

Unfortunately, instead of sticking to a categorical condemnation of all antiSemitism, whether from the left, from the right or from no particular political origin, Zeldin uses part of his letter to score political points.

He cites the attack by a mentally ill woman, who punched an Orthodox woman in the street the day following her release after being charged with another antiSemitic attack, to trash the bail reform law recently passed by New York State. This issue has nothing to do with combating anti-Semitism. It does have to do with changing the practice of making people arrested but not convicted rot in jail for months or even years, or plead guilty to a crime they did not commit, solely because

they are poor. Exploiting the fight against anti-Semitism to sow fear and division about an unrelated law he opposes in any case is not only immoral but discredits the very cause Zeldin is advocating.

I agree with Zeldin that the BDS movement, founded on the principle of eliminating the Jewish state of Israel, is often a locus of anti-Semitism. The congressional resolution he cites, H.Res.246 — condemning BDS — passed 398-17.

But his condemnation of BDS would be far more compelling if he acknowledged the dramatic increase of open anti-Semitism during the Trump administration, sparked in part by Trump’s refusal to categorically and emphatically condemn white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups and rallies, most notoriously the Unite the Right rally of August 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia. As in so much, the president sets the tone.

Instead of making political points, it would have been far better if Zeldin had stuck to the recommendation of Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, to back passage of the Online Safety Modernization Act, which would

aid the effort to combat online anti-Semitic vitriol, and also the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act, which would strengthen measures to prevent violent anti-Semitic attacks in the U.S. As a member of Congress, these are active steps Zeldin could take.

I agree with Zeldin that education is absolutely central to combating antiSemitism. A 2018 survey revealed that 41 percent of Americans and 66 percent of millennials do not know what Auschwitz was. Such education needs to include study of the underlying causes of the Holocaust, such as the centuries-long demonization of Jews in Europe as pernicious outsiders. Elie Wiesel famously said, “The Holocaust did not begin in the gas chambers — it began with words.”

The worst possible way to combat antiSemitism is to politicize the fight against it. Doing so weakens the effort. It’s not a political issue, it’s not a Democratic issue, it’s not a Republican issue. It’s a common decency issue.

Celebrating MLB’s First Woman Coach

T

here may be no crying in baseball, as Tom Hanks famously said in the movie “A League of Their Own,” but there is, thanks to San Francisco Giants and Alyssa Nakken, now a woman in baseball.

Last week, for the first time in the 150-year history of the game, a woman joined the ranks of the coaches at Major League level.

While it may seem past time that America’s pastime caught up with the times, members of the Long Island athletic and softball communities welcomed the news.

“I hope that it becomes more of the norm rather than the exception,” said Shawn Heilbron, athletic director at Stony Brook University.

For Megan Bryant, who has been the head softball coach at Stony Brook since 2001 and has collected more than 870 career wins, Nakken’s new job creates a path that others can follow.

“For the Giants and Major League Baseball and women in sports careers, that’s a big deal and is a step forward,” Bryant said. “It will open other doors for other women.”

Bryant said teams can and should recognize the wealth of coaching talent among men and women.

“If you’re a great coach, it shouldn’t matter the gender of the athletes you’re coaching,” Bryant said.

Lori Perez, who was an assistant softball coach at Sacramento State University when Nakken played and is now head coach, said the news gave her “goose bumps.”

The hardworking Nakken, a two-time captain at Sacramento State, once asked her coaches to stop a low-energy practice so the team could refocus and flush their negative

energy, Perez said.

Nakken’s parents had “high expectations for her but, even better, she had high expectations for herself,” which included doing well academically and helping out in summer camps, Perez said.

Patrick Smith, athletic director at Smithtown school district, believes these first few female hires in men’s sports are a part of a leading edge of a new trend.

“We will see more and more [women joining professional sports teams] as time goes on,” Smith said. In Smithtown, women constitute greater than half of all the athletes at the high school level.

Among the six senior women on Stony Brook’s softball team, three members are considering a career in sports after they graduate, Bryant said.

While the Women’s College World Series softball games have drawn considerable fan attention, attendance at women’s college and professional sporting events typically lags that of men.

The Long Island community can provide

their daughters with a chance to observe and learn from role models at the college and professional levels by attending and supporting local teams.

“It’s frustrating that the women’s games aren’t drawing close to what the men’s teams are,” said Heilbron. The Stony Brook women’s basketball team, which includes standout junior India Pagan among other talented players, is currently 18-1.

This is the best start in program history.

“I hope people will come” support the team, Heilbron said. “If you come, we believe you’ll come back.”

As for women in high profile roles, Bryant, who is looking forward to the addition of six new players to her softball squad this year, believes each step is important on a longer journey toward equal opportunity.

“Whether it’s in sports, science or politics, we’re making strides,” Bryant said. “But we still have a long way to go.”

Perez, who has two children, is thrilled that “women can dream of things they couldn’t dream of before,” thanks to Nakken and other female trailblazers inside and outside of the sports world.

he impeachment trial of President Donald Trump in the Senate was not the cause of Blue Monday this week. An idea first introduced to the world in a press release in 2005, Blue Monday was named the most depressing day of the year.

Typically, the third Monday of January, but it can be the second or the fourth, Blue Monday is the confluence of several downers. We Between can certainly guess you and me what they are.

For starters,

the traditionally coldest month, makes for a lot of storms, gloom and shut-ins. Even if we are fortunate, as we have been so far this year — there haven’t been so many storms — we know they are coming.

Then there are the holiday bills. This is when credit charges begin arriving, along with their urgency to be paid. We had a wonderful time, for the most part, during the celebratory days of December. Time to pay the piper.

Right around now is also when our New Year’s resolutions begin to fade. Reality sets in with an awareness of how truly hard it is to break bad habits. Easier to slip back into the old ways, especially as a treat during the awful weather.

As we look ahead into the new year, there are no big holidays to anticipate — nothing larger than St. Valentine’s Day, a Hallmark holiday after all. And then there are the coming taxes.

Property tax deadline has just passed, emptying our bank accounts but April 15 will be coming up faster than our savings might grow. Not all of us get refunds — quite the contrary.

So here are five things we can do to offset the alleged challenges of the season. They are proposed by a Buddhist monk in his book, “Love for Imperfect Things: How to Accept Yourself in a World Striving for Perfection,” and they speak to self-care. Haemin Sunim, who has taught Buddhism at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, according to a recent article in The New York Times, goes beyond the obvious advice of exercising, eating well and getting enough sleep.

First, start by taking a deep breath. As we think about our breathing, it becomes deeper, giving us a sense of calm no matter what is happening around us.

Next comes acceptance “of ourselves, our feelings and of life’s imperfections.” When we struggle to overcome difficult emotions, the struggle intensifies. But if we start by accepting those emotions, allowing them to be there, the mind quiets.

Writing is a third suggestion from the monk.

This one, of course, speaks to me. Write down what is troubling or what we need to do, then

leave the load on paper and get a good sleep. The list will be there and help to direct our actions in the morning. I have found this therapeutic when I wake up in the middle of the night herding a multitude of thoughts. I keep a pen and pad on the bedside table and I offload the burdens. In the morning, if I can read my writing, I can usually figure out how to proceed.

Talking is also important. How do I know what I think until I have heard what I’ve said?

Somehow talking out a situation makes it clearer.

There has to be a totally nonjudgmental and trustworthy friend who will listen, of course.

Last on the top 5 is walking: “When you sit around thinking about upsetting things, it will not help you. If you start walking, our physical energy changes and rather than dwelling on that story, you can pay attention to nature — a tree trunk, a rock. You begin to see things more objectively, and oftentimes that stress within your body will be released,” the monk said.

Even if we have no issues at the moment, we certainly feel better after taking a walk.
