What is being done about gun violence

Mass shootings and gun violence have rocked the nation, leaving people to ask the question: What can be done to stop the violence?

New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) called on Democratic presidential candidates to support strong gun safety laws. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-NY2), in a show of bipartisanship, called for a vote on the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 at a press conference Aug. 6.

Improved background checks, banning high-powered automatic and semi-automatic weapons and ammunition, and better mental health screenings have been among the top ideas suggested, some of the legislation relating to which is still pending. Some is stalled at various levels of Congress.

Here’s a recap of what measures have been recently implemented or proposed.

Bump stocks

In March 2019 President Donald Trump (R) signed into law a ban on bump stocks, devices which turn weapons into automatic guns that fire rapidly through the recoil of the gun itself.

Red flag laws

New York State passed a “red flag” law in February 2019, which takes effect on Aug. 24. A new report, entitled “Mass Violence in America: Causes, Impacts and Solutions,” which was released Aug. 6 by the National Council for Behavioral Health, suggests that red flag laws may be among the best tools so far suggested for reducing gun violence. Red flag laws enable people, concerned about the well-being of individuals who display violent tendencies or show signs that they may be at risk to engage in gun violence, to contact law enforcement to institute gun control measures through a court process. Under New York’s statute, three categories of people can submit a red flag on someone: law enforcement, school officials and family.

Long Islanders big on reviving lost ladybugs

Who doesn’t love a ladybug? Everyone seems to hold at least a certain amount of affection for the insect. So, people might find the news somewhat heartbreaking: Certain species of the polka-dotted bug are threatened and nearly extinct in the Northeastern United States.

Scientists say they don’t know precisely how or why the ladybug population has declined so rapidly in recent decades or what impact it will ultimately have on the ecosystem, but they’re asking the public to assist with their efforts to both search for the bug to document the population and to help revive the species by purchasing insects to set free.

“It’s a now or never,” said Leslie Ladd Allee, an entomologist from The Lost Ladybug Project, an affiliate of Cornell University. “If citizens act as scientists, they can help.”

If you see a ladybug, people are asked to simply upload a photo of it to The Lost Ladybug Project’s website or its app, called LLP. If you don’t see any on your own land, the project organizers consider that “zero” is still important to report. Searching can be done from May to October, with June, July and August being the best time frame.

Over the last eight years, the project has gathered more than 40,000 pictures of different species of the ladybug from every state in the U.S. and parts of Canada and Mexico. The data is providing researchers with a more complete understanding of what’s going on.

What they’re seeing is a rise in foreign species of the insect, such as the Asian ladybug, while some native species were feared to be eliminated, according to Dan Gilrein, an entomologist with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County.

“The New York state insect is the ninespotted lady beetle — some people call these ladybugs which is fine, too — that was once common in the state, but no longer,” he said.

no longer found on Long Island, or New York state or New England.

Then in 2011, during a Lost Ladybug event sponsored by the Peconic Land Trust at Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett, volunteer participant Peter Priolo found a nine-spotted ladybug living happily on a sunflower.

Kathy Kennedy, senior outreach manager for Peconic Land Trust, said that she’s been sponsoring a search as a citizen science activity every summer since then to connect people with nature and raise awareness about the decline in native species.

“The trust runs Quail Hill Farm organically, which we think helps to actively steward the home population of the nine-spotted variety of ladybugs,” Kennedy said.

Scientists with the ladybug project since 2011 have been raising offspring from the

Amagansett colony in a lab in Ithaca. For the last few years, they’ve been selling the bugs to people in the Northeast. They hope to revive the species the same way wolf populations were reestablished in Yellowstone National Park. So far, 60 people have released ladybugs on Long Island through the program. There have been 16 locations on Long Island’s North Shore.

Families and youth groups can purchase ladybug restoration kits for $50 plus shipping from The Lost Ladybug Project. Allee said that the project loses money on each transaction but wants to keep the price affordable to encourage participation.

The Lost Ladybug Project is supported by donations, sales and grants from the National Science Foundation. Allee said the project is underfunded, but the importance of the mission keeps the people involved motivated to continue.

“There are many kinds or species of lady beetles,” Gilrein said. “Some kinds of lady beetles are black with red spots, some have other colors like orange or yellow.”

Some feed on aphids, some specialize on pests like mites, mealybugs or scale insects, he said.

Many are considered beneficial, including the invasive Asian ladybug.

“Yes, they also consume aphids and other crop and garden pests,” Allee said. “Each species fills a different niche with somewhat different life cycle timing and diets.”

While some species of the insect are no longer common, the abundance of certain species, such as the seven-spotted lady beetle and the Asian ladybug concerns Allee.

“We need to preserve the biodiversity of ladybug species,” she said. “The decline of the three lost ladybugs threatens the biodiversity of ladybugs and the stability of food webs.”

Kings Park Heritage Museum hosts officials

More than a dozen local and state officials learned about the history of the hamlet of Kings Park during a trip to the Leo P. Ostebo Kings Park Heritage Museum Aug. 2.

U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) joined Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R) and others on a tour of the museum led by Joann Galletta Hahn, president of the museum’s board of trustees.

The tour included viewing the museum’s nine exhibition rooms, which includes the Cusick military room, where historic artifacts from the Spanish-American War, Revolutionary War, World War II and Vietnam War are on display.

The items recap military history, while highlighting the stories of soldiers from Kings Park.

The museum’s exhibits also focus on the origins of Irish and Italian immigrants settling in Kings Park and how many of them came to work at the old state hospital.

“We are the only school-community museum in the United States,” Hahn said.

“Ninety percent of the items in the museum are from Kings Park residents who have lived here for generations.”

The museum was first established in 1994, when Leo Ostebo, a retired Kings Park high school teacher, along with students and residents, decided they wanted to help preserve the hamlet’s history.

“When the mental hospital closed, students at the high school came to Leo and told him, ‘No one is going to know who we are, they’re just going to drive up 25A and pass us by because there will be no reason to be here,’” Hahn said.

David Flynn, one of the curators, said during the tour that the Kings Park community members are really proud of the museum.

“Usually when people come here, they say they didn’t know this was here,” Flynn said.

“And they are just amazed at the history.”

Other rooms in the museum show old-fashioned cameras, school toys, sports memorabilia, old kitchen and household appliances as well as old farming vehicles and equipment.

“This is great, there’s so much good stuff here,” Suozzi said while getting a glimpse of the general store room. “Not a lot of people get to see this.”

Wehrheim replied saying that is why they wanted Suozzi and others to come in and see all the work everyone at the museum has done.

Hahn was pleased with how the tours went.

“I thought they had a really good time touring the museum and were really surprised at the rooms, exhibitions that Kings Park residents have put together,” she said. “It was fantastic, they got to learn about the history of this town.”

The museum today is run by Ostebo along with 15 other trustees and 10 student interns. It is supervised by the Kings Park Central School District. The museum has won multiple awards over the years, including the Distinguished Public Service award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, a Certificate of Appreciation from the American Legion and an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History.

Officials honor fallen hero Miles of Jericho Turnpike renamed A nine-mile stretch of Jericho Turnpike was renamed after Lieutenant Christopher J. Raguso Aug. 3. Raguso was one of seven members of the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard in Westhampton Beach who was killed in action in Iraq last year when their helicopter crashed while on a mission supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the war against ISIS. “We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Lieutenant Raguso for a lifetime of public service to his community and his country,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D). “The highway named in his honor is a fitting testament to his service as a soldier, firefighter and family man.”

In addition to his service with the Air National Guard, Raguso dedicated his life to service and sacrifice and keeping his community safe. He was a member of the fire department in Commack, where he lived, and a lieutenant in the FDNY with six commendations for bravery, and a combat search and rescue aviator in the United States Air Force.

Community leaders participated in a dedication ceremony alongside Raguso’s family members. His wife Carmela and two young daughters Mila and Eva attended the dedication with Raguso’s parents, John and Laura, and brother Marc.

The renaming ceremony, they said, will ensure his service and bravery live on forever.

Suozzi voted “no” on similar legislation proposed in 2017. Zeldin is a co-sponsor of the 2019 legislation.

A representative for Zeldin had this to say on the bill: “The congressman supports the rights of lawabiding Americans to own firearms to protect themselves, their family and other loved ones. He believes lunatics manifesting violent criminal intentions to murder with firearms have access to none.”

Community hosts blood drive

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) is collaborating with St. Joseph’s Church in Kings Park to host a blood drive on Thursday, August 29 from 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

It will be at Travis Hall – Lower Level, behind the church at 59 Church Street. The drive is to benefit the blood banks maintained by Long Island Blood Services, which provides blood to hospitals throughout Long Island.

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Stony Brook University has been awarded five grants worth more than $2 million that will go toward funding mathematics, engineering, physics and other science education.

“Whether it’s educating the next generation, helping us protect our planet or pioneering the future of mathematics, Stony Brook University is on the front lines of research and innovation,” stated U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) in a press release. “Driving this critical federal funding back to some of the brightest minds of our generation, located right here on Long Island, will go a long way in helping these scientists carry out their vital work.”

Of the five grants, the university’s engineering academy will receive the most funding with more than $1.1 million going to the program.

The engineering academy’s stated goal is to increase students’ motivation to pursue careers in fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The program will prepare middle school students for advanced science and math courses as well as potential engineering careers down the line.

“The programs we have in place targeting K-12 students, teachers and counselors, as well as undergraduate and graduate students at Stony Brook, are key building blocks in constructing a diversity pathway in STEM,” said Fotis Sotiropoulos, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “Targeted to middle school students and teachers, this unique pro-

gram will engage them in the excitement, challenge and opportunity in engineering as a field of study and potential career.”

The remaining funds will go toward research studies. More than $365,000 will be used to study physics and climate regulation. Also, researchers will look into understanding radiative balance and precipitation changes in tropical weather patterns.

Close to $300,000 will fund a study spearheaded by Anatoly Frenkel, which will look at electro-chemo-mechanical processes at the atomic level. According to Sotiropoulos, Frenkel’s research has the potential to transform a wide range of vitally important technologies, ranging from focusing devices in the cameras of cellular phones to fuel injectors in automobiles.

In addition, more than $300,000 will be used to fund two mathematics studies through the mathematics department.

“There is no greater catalyst for scientific discovery than research universities,” said Michael Bernstein, the recently appointed interim president of Stony Brook University. “The grants we have received allow us to address society’s most pressing challenges. As Long Island’s sole public research institution, we remain committed to advancing scientific knowledge throughout our region and around the world.”

The five grants were awarded by the National Science Foundation, an agency created by Congress in 1950, which promotes the progress of science; advances national health, prosperity and welfare; and works to secure national defense.

St. James General Store roadway gets a $30K makeover The Town of Smithtown Traffic Safety Department is working on a series of pedestrian and driver safety measures to improve the area surrounding the historic St. James General Store, located on the corner of Moriches Road and Harbor Hill Road.

The project was presented by the traffic safety office after damage to a drainpipe required the highway department to go into the ground to replace it. Traffic Safety Director Mitch Crowley used the road work as an opportunity to design a safer intersection.

Using capital funds left over in pedestrian safety projects, these new improvements are expected to make a historically difficult corner much safer for shoppers, joggers, bikers and drivers.

“This is the perfect little downtown revitalization project at the end of the Lake Avenue business district. I commend Mitch

Crowley and his department for bringing this idea to the table, when a drainpipe unexpectedly needed repair,” said Town of Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R). “This project increases foot traffic for the historic general store and makes the intersection much safer for our residents and visitors.”

Two solar-powered LED rectangular rapidflash beacon pedestrian signs featuring pushbutton activation are to be installed, along with a cobblestone-style pedestrian crosswalk.

Concrete curbs and sidewalks will be redone as well.

The upgraded sidewalks and crosswalks will be handicap accessible, with 5-feet-wide sidewalks and ramps, as per the guidelines set by the New York State Department of Transportation. The Traffic Safety Department has planned to build a bulb-out, or a mini half-circle island in front of the general store.

This unique design helps to prevent driver blind spots, creates a safer waiting area for pedestrians and slows down traffic as it descends along this downhill road.

“Overall, safer pedestrian crosswalks and walkways would be very much welcomed. It has always been a problem when pedestrians would walk from one site to another along Taylor Lane crossing at Moriches Road,” St. James General Store Manager Karen Sheedy said. “Anything to make this intersection safer would be tremendous.”

The renovated crosswalk will connect the parking lots for the St. James General Store and Deepwells Farm Historical Society, which will help to ease foot traffic concerns for pedestrians crossing Moriches Road. Renovations are expected to begin immediately, after the drainpipe has been repaired.

Suffolk County has taken the tax deed and boarded up the Irish Viking on Lake Avenue in St. James, because the vacant pub’s owner owes $72,752.01 in back taxes plus $21,000 in current year taxes, with interest and other penalties, according to a spokesperson from the office of county Legislator Robert Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) office.

The county will auction off the site if the owners fail to pay the money owed within the next two years, but the reclamation process would require legislative approval.

The Town of Smithtown sought appraisals for the building in May 2018 to potentially purchase the property to create off-street parking for the Lake Avenue business district as part of its revitalization plan for St. James.

The estimates show that the property was valued at $310,000, according to the town’s press officer Nicole Garguilo.

Now that the county has taken ownership of the site, Garguilo said that it creates more options for the town to negotiate some kind of partnership or funding arrangement with the county.

No details are currently formalized, but Garguilo said that the St. James revitalization goals include creating a parking lot with a performance pavilion and showcase in the center of St. James that would encourage people to walk around the hamlet, rather than drive through it.

The Irish Viking property, according to county records, is owned by J.P. Walsh Realty Group located at 25 Hawthorne St. in Farmingdale, a residential site. The realty business is listed as active and opened in 2007, according to New York State records.

Its phone number is disconnected and the owner couldn’t be reached for comment.

Winthrop Taylor Hall Winthrop Taylor Hall of Lake Ronkonkoma died on Monday, May 13, at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown after suffering a heart attack at the age of 64. Several family members were by his side.

Hall attended Harbor Country Day School in St. James, East Woods School in Oyster Bay, The Rectory School in Pomfret, Connecticut, and graduated in 1974 from The Stony Brook School in Stony Brook.

He grew up in the Village of Nissequogue with three brothers and a sister and enjoyed tennis, golf and paddle tennis as well as volunteering in the Nissequogue Fire Department and monitoring emergency communications for the Suffolk County REACT Program. He was a seaman in the U.S. Navy from 1981 until 1983 and served in the active reserves upon discharge from active duty. In the late 1990s, Hall was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and became a longtime participant in programs at the Clubhouse of Suffolk County, which later merged with Suffolk County United Veterans and the Mental Health Association in Suffolk to form today’s Association for Mental Health and Wellness. One of Hall’s greatest pleasures was to participate in periodic trips to

Albany for NYAPRS (New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services) conferences, where he made presentations to state legislators to advocate for mental health awareness and program funding for those with mental disabilities. He was a valued member of the Clubhouse/ MHAW team at these conferences and made significant contributions to their activities through the sharing of his knowledge of public policy and personal experiences with public programs.

He is survived by his mother, Louise of South Setauket; two brothers, Frederick of Bellport and Stuart (Robin) of Durham, New Hampshire; a sister, Lisa H. Reed (Keith) of Three Forks, Montana; a nephew, five nieces, a great-nephew and three great-nieces. His father, Gordon, and brother, Bruce, predeceased him. He will be fondly remembered by family and friends for his exceptional memory, his love of trivia and his eagerness to converse with others.

A memorial service has been planned for Saturday, Sept. 7 at 9:30 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 490 Route 25A, St. James. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, 939 Johnson Ave., Ronkonkoma, NY 11779.

Why was the menopausal health program established at Siena Women’s Health?

Who would be a good candidate for menopausal and osteoporosis treatments in your practice?

A. Younger generations can no longer afford the rising prices of homes and taxes in our area. So, in the past 10 to 15 years, our population has skewed toward an older demographic. Approximately 385,000 women living in the Suffolk County community are in the menopausal transition or menopause. A menopausal woman’s medical needs are different from those of younger women. For the past decade, I have been working to establish a program that addresses the needs of those women.

A. We provide treatment options for women who experience hot flashes and night sweats, which can cause insomnia, irritability and mood swings that affect quality of life. Additionally, we address the genitourinary syndrome of menopause, which consists of anatomical changes of the external genitalia, lower urinary tract and vagina. Symptoms associated with genitourinary syndrome include vaginal dryness, discharge, burning and painful intercourse. These symptoms can cause sexual dysfunction, urinary urgency and frequency, urinary stress incontinence, overactive bladder, and frequent urinary tract infections. We also offer screenings, workup and treatment for women who have osteoporosis.

What role does your team play?

A. We have specialists in various fields of medicine and surgery in our program who address the medical and surgical complications of menopause. Their areas of expertise include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal problems, breast cancer, neurological disease, osteoporosis and weight management.

What types of services do you offer?

A. In my practice, I offer menopausal and osteoporosis consultation, which includes DXA for osteoporosis screening, gynecological care, ultrasound, urodynamics and pelvic floor muscle exercises with biofeedback therapy.

Remember in 2019

Americans feel sorrow and fear whenever we learn that a gunmen carrying a high-powered firearm has committed a mass shooting. In one week, three shootings occurred in three separate states. While none of them took place on Long Island or even New York, the tragedy still hits home. The situation is for too long unbearable and action is overdue.

We are too often reminded that we aren’t safe whether we are at work, school, a movie theater, a store, nightclub, a concert or a festival.

After the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, in 2018 many school districts on Long Island began contemplating whether or not to have armed guards, while systematically upgrading security in their buildings. Children coming back to school in the Comsewogue School District, for example, will walk through vestibules lined with bullet resistant glass.

One editor was talking about an upcoming garlic festival with a group of friends the other day when one shuddered and said, “Please, don’t go to any garlic festivals,” all in relation to a shooting at a garlic festival in Gilroy, California, July 28.

After the recent tragedies, with one shooter robbing the lives of 22 in El Paso, Texas, and another killer murdering nine in Dayton, Ohio, with dozens injured in both cities, many have said that we need to remember these events and how we feel when we vote in 2020. Why wait?

Our local legislators, even members of our boards of education, make decisions that affect our everyday lives.

They can write stricter laws when it comes to purchasing and owning guns, allocate funding to patients seeking mental health care or help schools with grants for security. Make sure they are making the decisions you want them to. Even though the 2019 elections involve local municipalities and not federal offices, every legislator can affect laws that protect our lives and well-being.

This week’s headlines made many Americans feel helpless.

Police responded to the Dayton shooting in 30 seconds since the first round left the gunman’s chamber. In that time, nine people were dead. The suspect used a 100-round magazine and a semi-automatic rifle. It took five times as long to write this paragraph as it took a murderer to kill nine people.

But there’s something all of us can do. We can vote for those who represent our values. This year and next, the time is now to look deep inside our hearts and ask what we feel is the best route to stop the violence. Then research the candidates who are running for office to see where they stand.

And even before election day, call your local representatives and tell them something must be done now, not after election day.

Every time you vote for a candidate, your ballot is a show of confidence to continue in the political realm. Today’s member of town council can be tomorrow’s county or state legislator or next year’s congressional leader.

Nov. 5, Election Day, will be here before you know it. The time is now to start doing the footwork and for everybody to vote. Our editorial staff will soon be hosting political debates to prepare for our election issue. We’re not waiting until 2020 to ask the candidates tough questions and neither should our readers.

Trump nonwhite racist rebuttal In a recent letter to the editor [“Are nonwhite Trump backers racist,” Aug. 1], Jim Soviero claims that support for Trump couldn’t possibly stem from racism since millions of nonwhites voted for him. This reminds me of the classic line: “I’m not racist — some of my best friends are black.”

The support of Trump by a small minority of nonwhites does not inoculate him or his supporters from being racist.

In 1933 a group called the Association of German National Jews welcomed Hitler’s accession to chancellor. That doesn’t mean Hitler or millions of his supporters weren’t anti-Semitic.

The interesting question is not whether Trump is a racist — spoiler alert: he is — it’s how he is changing our country by openly appealing to the racist attitudes and racial resentments of millions of white Americans.

What is racism? The short answer is that it’s the belief, whether open or implicit, that one race — “coincidentally” one’s own — is superior to another socially, morally, intellectually or biologically. How many Trump supporters confuse Trump’s racism with “honesty”?

No, not every last Trump supporter is racist, but he sure plays to the racism of millions of whites, implicit or otherwise.

Many Trump supporters bridle at being called racist by Democrats or liberals. But they don’t seem to mind that Trump himself clearly assumes they’re racist. Why else would he base his whole political strategy on vilifying and insulting nonwhites?

Trump’s re-election strategy for 2020 is all too obvious. It’s to identify nonwhite “rapists and criminals,” living where “no human being would want to live,” coming here from “[expletive

deleted] countries” as the central problem confronting America. It’s no accident that a MAGA hat has become the same kind of poisonous symbol as the Confederate flag, with the added advantage of plausible deniability.

Why have we seen a surge in hate crimes since Trump’s election? Why are self-identified white supremacists celebrating Trump, praising him as one of their own? Why is the door to my synagogue now locked every Saturday once we’re all inside? And most important of all, why are Trump’s supporters OK with all of this, as if it’s of no significance, as if it has no meaning for what our country is becoming?

We’ve seen this movie before and it doesn’t end well.

What other country spends more than $1 trillion a year total on wars and conflicts globally and pays for them by cutting spending on health care, education, housing, job development, infrastructure, clean energy, senior and veterans care?

What other country has 1,000-plus military bases globally when the rest of the world combined has about 40?

What other country has a dozen $15 billion aircraft carriers with more coming?

Russia has two and China one.

What other country is spending $1 trillion over 10 years to “modernize” its 12,000-plus nuclear weapons?

What other country has 22 returning veterans killing themselves a day?

What other country has been in continuous wars around the globe since World War II with millions dead, countries and regions destroyed and countless new

What other country glorifies and applauds war, weapons and violence in media, movies, press, culture and entertainment to the extent we do?

What other country has both major political parties and leadership enabling this?

What other country has weapons as its major export and product, and whose industry spends millions a year on lobbying for that?

What other country has some 40,000 a year dying from guns?

One who lives by the sword dies by the sword.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. declared in his 1967 speech at Riverside Church, New York, “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

Gun deaths Being born and living in New York state for more than 60 years, I have never seen so many and frequent gun deaths seemingly and randomly spread throughout the country. And it’s escalating. Colleges, public events, malls, schools, military bases, streets, places of business and worship, concerts, transportation, homes are the settings.

Why is this happening? What’s causing this sickness where rage and hate take over and poison that person’s mind where the only solution is killing others and probably oneself?

To live is the foremost imperative hardwired into all living things. For a person to kill others and probably oneself repeatedly, goes against the deepest, most powerful instinct. It shows that whatever turns these people into suicidal murderers is supremely powerful, can’t be resisted and is contagious.

NRA should fund gun control research

I

have an obvious question for the National Rifle Association: Why fight gun control?

Yeah, yeah, I get it. You and many others don’t want a repeal of the Second Amendment, which was written well before the creation of assault weapons that enabled deranged Americans to kill their fellow citizens at an unfathomable rate.

But don’t gun manufacturers D. None want gun conof the above trol? After all, wouldn’t it be

Let’s take a look at the difference between gun manufacturers and car manufacturers. On the one hand, you have companies producing

vehicles where safety is a top priority. In addition to meeting the stringent requirements of the law, some car manufacturers add features like a way to block text or phone signals from getting into a car while someone is driving.

Wow, what a concept. The car manufacturers don’t make the phones. People have died doing all kinds of activities with their phones, taking selfies in dangerous locations and not paying attention to their environment in general because they are so focused on their phones.

And yet, some of these car manufacturers are protecting drivers from their own unsafe impulses that could harm them and others — sounds familiar? — by preventing the dangerous combination of phone use and driving. If we buy into the notion that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” shouldn’t gun manufacturers make an effort to find out which people are more likely to kill other people, and not sell these destructive weapons to them?

In 1996, three years before the Columbine, Colorado, shooting became one of the first in what has now become a painful and familiar collection of mass murders in locations

ranging from schools to houses of worship to malls during back-to-school sales, Congress passed a budget that included the Dickey Amendment, named after U.S. Rep. Jay Dickey (R-Arkansas). That amendment prevented the government from funding research that might lead to the conclusion that gun control was necessary.

Say what? Yeah, but, in light of recent tragedies, a law was passed last year clarifying that the Centers for Disease Control can actually fund research about guns. And, yet, the CDC still can’t lead to any advocacy for gun control.

If guns make most people safer, why don’t gun manufacturers want to know which people, specifically, shouldn’t have a gun? The idea of background checks and red flags are all fine, but they may not be sufficient.

If a virus broke out anywhere in the country that threatened to kill a room full of people in minutes, we would want the CDC not only to understand how to treat those who might have that virus immediately, but also to provide warning signs to others about any symptoms that might lead to an outbreak of that virus.

The CDC is way behind in its research in part because that 1996 amendment effectively dampened any effort to conduct the kind of studies that would lead to a greater understanding of gun violence.

Sure, the Federal Bureau of Investigation could and should find people who might be a threat to society. With the help of the CDC, the FBI might have a better idea of where to look.

The well-funded NRA, however, would do itself — and society — a huge favor if it put its considerable financial muscle behind an independent effort to understand how to recognize those people who shouldn’t have any kind of gun, let alone an assault rifle capable of mass murder in a minute. The NRA doesn’t even need to call it gun control, just firearms research.

We the people may have a right to own guns, but we also have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Wouldn’t gun control research, supported by the NRA, ensure that we could live our lives without fear of the wrong people owning the wrong guns?

Today that simple business plan seems like a fairy tale. According to data in a special section of The New York Times on Sunday, “Over the last 15 years, about 2100 local newspapers — or roughly a quarter of all local newsrooms — have either merged with a competitor or ceased printing …

About 6800 local newspapers continue to operate across the country, but many are shells of their former selves, with pared down staffs and coverage areas. About half of the remaining local papers are in small and rural communities, and the vast majority distribute fewer than 15,000 copies of each edition.”

I could go on with the statistics, but here’s the point: If we don’t embrace change, we get left behind.

So it is that we at Times Beacon Record Newspapers have become TBR News Media, with the addition of a website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube platforms to accommodate the various demands for news and advertising. After

all, we work for our customers and we must offer them what they want and need. By the same token, while maintaining those platforms has increased our costs, the revenue they generate is minimal.

Further worsening the newspaper situation is the demise of the traditional mom-and-pop retail stores, the previous backbone of so many communities and community newspapers.

So we have changed, as the surviving retailers have changed. We, and they, are now building events into our offerings, much as we used to publish supplements to target specific subjects and advertising niches for our papers. Retailing now includes some aspect of entertainment with their event planning, and publishing companies, whether in print or digital, must also provide entertaining events.

Fortunately for us at TBR, we can make this fit with our mission statement to give back to the community, and indeed to endeavor to strengthen the sense of community where we publish. Since our first year in existence, over 43 years ago, we have held the Man and Woman of the Year event at the Three Village Inn, with the financial help of Stony Brook University and the Lessings, at which we have saluted those who go the extra mile

offering their products, services or time to their neighbors in their hometowns.

For the last two years, we have produced and directed films with authentic Revolutionary War narrative at Stony Brook’s Staller Center to share pride in our Long Island history, explaining who we were at the dawn of our country and how we got here.

Coming next on the events list is Cooks, Books and Corks, a community-enriching program that features scrumptious food from some of our local restaurants at stations around the perimeter of a room at the Bates House filled with local authors and their books. We started this last year, and it was such a success that both restaurateurs and authors offered themselves on the spot for the next such gathering. They said they liked “the high tone.”

Therefore, the Second Annual Cooks, Books and Corks will take place in the same bucolic location, in Setauket, on Tuesday evening, Sept. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. The charge is $50 per person, and the money raised will go toward subsidizing the pay of a journalism intern next summer.
